18 November - National weather forecast presented by Clare Nasir.
Transcript
00:00A cold wintry snap is now upon us and will continue cold with the risk of snow and ice
00:06through the rest of this working week. There are numerous weather warnings for snow and ice
00:12covering a lot of the country. For more details check out our website but certainly over the
00:17higher ground we could see up to 20 centimetres of snow above around 300 metres but we will see
00:23some deposits, slushy deposits at lower levels as well as this area of low pressure just
00:29slides down towards the south east. A cold northerly wind then kicks in through Wednesday,
00:35a bitter wind chill and further snow showers. So let's pick up on some detail. This weather
00:40front here is bringing rain, sleet and snow across the central belt, southern parts of Scotland
00:46down towards northern England. Snow showers are streaming in across the north as well as
00:50the west of Scotland down towards Northern Ireland, a few clipping the north east. At the same
00:55time we are seeing also showers just filing across Irish seacoast down towards the west
01:00country, a strong wind here. Some drier skies through this evening across eastern counties
01:05but eventually you will see this mix of rain and wet snow as it slides down towards these parts.
01:11So that's a picture if you're travelling through this evening. Remember there are warnings out
01:16there for snow and also ice so slippery conditions, poor visibility associated with this bank of cloud
01:23and rain and snow and those snow showers will just be relentless towards the north as we head through
01:28tonight and into the next few days. So let's just pick up on this occlusion here which gradually pushes
01:35down towards northern England. Wales seeing some snow over Snowdonia and perhaps even at lower levels for a
01:41time certainly for Pennines, the Peak Districts, Derbyshire Dales and eventually as we head into the early
01:47hours of the morning reaching the Midlands, the west Midlands. Showery bursts towards the far south there
01:53and notice this wind which is picking up some strength and certainly delivering these snow showers across
01:58Northern Ireland, northern and central parts of Scotland and also this eastern strip of England
02:04where we will see snow accumulations particularly across the North York Moors. So if you're stepping out
02:10first thing tomorrow morning you can see where the wet weather is and again mixed in with that will be
02:15some winteriness certainly some some wet snow especially over the high ground but even at lower
02:20levels the air is digging in from the north and it is cold. So here are your temperatures through the
02:27night these are towns and cities certainly sub-zero with a widespread frost across the countryside and
02:33generally across Scotland as well so a bitterly cold start to the day again the risk of ice as this
02:39feature here that's rain and some wet snow gradually clears down towards the south east of England
02:45through the morning but rush hour will be unpleasant for many. Now through the morning a few features we
02:50need to point out first of all these snow showers across Scotland further accumulations here and also
02:56some drifting with that wind being strong they're running in across the north of Northern Ireland and then
03:02along this eastern western side should I say where we are seeing accumulations particularly across Pembrokeshire
03:10through the morning into the afternoon and also the moors and this area of showers but they will be a mix
03:16of rain and snow will continue through the day with that driving wind further snow showers likely
03:23particularly over the high ground across eastern counties of England through the morning into the afternoon
03:30a mix of rain and snow along the coastline so this cold snap continues through Wednesday but notice
03:36some brighter skies coming through certainly in land you'll see some sunshine as we lose the cloud
03:42across the midlands west country away from the far south west and for the central belt of Scotland
03:48down towards northern England that again will be where you'll see the brightest skies temperatures will
03:53struggle add on the strength of the wind it's going to feel even colder really icy outside certainly in terms
03:59of how it's going to feel and the risk of snow and ice where you're seeing those snow showers through
04:04tomorrow and into evening time and they'll continue overnight a widespread frost wherever you are
04:10temperatures will be even lower than the coming night and what that means yes it's going to be a
04:15bitter start to the day come Thursday so Thursday morning yet again it's these prone spots where you'll see
04:22a mix of rain and snow showers and they'll penetrate inland across Pennines through the day with a strong wind
04:30certainly for the Highlands and the Cairngorn as temperatures struggle now Thursday night will be
04:35the coldest night spot temperature across Scotland we could see a minus 11 with clearing skies and then
04:42very slowly this feature attempts to move in from the west later on on Friday bringing with it rain
04:49preceded by perhaps and so obviously we'll keep you posted here elsewhere it's a cold and frosty day
04:54with some brighter skies and we lose a lot of the showers as well with a a different wind direction
05:00wherever you are take care stay tuned to the forecast we'll keep you updated on those weather warnings
05:05and I'll see you again soon
05:13you
