00:29following the end of more than 18 years of strike.

00:41on the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the ceasefire.
00:45Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:51I'm Sophie Fernandez from the Teler Sur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:54We begin with the news.
00:55Stay with us.
00:59Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said on Monday, during the assessment of Venezuela's
01:12productive engine in 2025, that the country is a reliable partner that strictly complies
01:18with signed agreements and contracts.
01:20The host of Nicolás Maduro emphasized that the agreement with the U.S. oil company Chevron
01:25is being fully respected.
01:27He also reaffirmed that his commitment remains firm beyond any conflicts that may exist with
01:33the U.S. government.
01:33government.
01:34In addition, the President reiterated that Venezuela acts as a serious and dignified nation.
01:40In the sense, the executive indicated that the creation for productive participation contracts
01:44has worked very well, an action that has attracted investors from all over the world, therefore
01:50fulfilling the commercial agreements that are made.
02:05We are serious people.
02:06When we sign a contract, in accordance with the Constitution and the law, it is fulfilled.
02:15No matter what, regardless of conflicts, circumstantial, momentary conflicts, we may have with the administration.
02:24With Chevron, we fulfill the contract to the letter.
02:27We are serious people.
02:28We are dignified people.
02:29We are the heirs of Simón Bolívar.
02:34In this regard, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro asserted that the job of a leader is
02:41to address the problems of his country and not to interfere in the affairs of other nations.
02:48The President cannot be thinking about how he is going to rule other countries.
02:55Imagine if I wasted my time, instead of being President of Venezuela, thinking about middling
03:01in other countries, looking for problems and trouble in other countries, wanting to rule
03:05the world.
03:06I would be doing a very poor job.
03:08It would be wrong.
03:10One has to focus on govern one country, on addressing the problems of one country, uncovering
03:15all the economic and social force, all the living force of a country to produce, which
03:20is what we have done.
03:21With a plan, and we can save twenty consecutive quarters of sustaining five percent growth.
03:26And this year, we are making a jump of eight percent, which is a source of tremendous joy
03:31in the agri-food sector.
03:34Also in Venezuela, the National Assembly approved, in the first discussion, the bill that will
03:43guarantee freedom of navigation and trade in the face of piracy and international blockades.
03:48The regulation arises as a direct response to the unilateral coercive measures and the detention
03:54of Venezuelan oil tankers in the Caribbean Sea, actions that the Venezuelan government has
03:59described as acts of modern piracy carried out by the United States.
04:03The new legal framework empowers the Venezuelan state to take all necessary measures to protect
04:08its ships and cargoes.
04:10This includes the ability to protect vessels flying the national flag or those transporting
04:16goods to and from Venezuela.
04:18In the sense, the unanimously approved bill aims to secure supply chains and the country's
04:23right to a free international trade.
04:33At the north of our territory is the Anostrum Sea, the Caribbean.
04:40Through there are done all of the commercial activities that connect us to the world and
04:47the world connects itself to us through that sea.
04:52This law looks to protect that commercial relationship and protect us from the acts of predatory acts
05:06that the government of the US is doing in our sea.
05:13In this sense, the President of Venezuela's National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, stated that
05:18the people remain firm in the face of threats from the US government.
05:22Of the same practices, that is why it was said that the US is an empire that moved from a place, the same empire, the same practices, the same barbarism, the same crime.
05:40These people of Venezuela, with decency and with dignity, are going to respond to all of the aggressions
05:46and it's going to win, do not have a doubt on it.
05:50For his part, US President Donald Trump confirmed that he seized Venezuela's oil and the ships that transported it.
06:02While admitting that his military offensive in the Caribbean, under the pretext of combating drug trafficking,
06:08is targeting all the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean.
06:13Program on land soon. Are you just referring to Venezuela or are you referring to other countries of Latin America?
06:18Anywhere drugs are pouring in. Anywhere. Not just Venezuela.
06:22Yes.
06:23Speaking of Venezuela, oil. What are we going to do with the oil that we have?
06:27Going to do with what?
06:28The oil that has been seized. The United States seized 1.9 million barrels of oil on December 10th.
06:34We're going to keep it. We're keeping it.
06:37Are we going to sell it or put in the strategic oil reserve?
06:39Maybe we'll sell it. Maybe we'll keep it. Maybe we'll use it in the strategic reserves.
06:44We're keeping it. We're keeping the ships also. Yeah, please.
06:48About Venezuela, sir, have you spoken to American oil companies that have had their assets seized
06:56about what a post-Maduro Venezuela would mean for them?
06:58Yes.
06:59Coming back and restarting operations?
07:00Oh, the big ones. Yeah. I have. Yeah, please.
07:03Why do you feel like this initiative was neglected for so many years?
07:06And does this come amidst the rising tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela?
07:09We're talking about with Venezuela?
07:11Yes.
07:12Well, you had a different kind of a president before me.
07:15They didn't mind being ripped off. They didn't mind being robbed.
07:18They didn't mind drugs pouring into our country.
07:20They didn't mind the jails of Venezuela and Trendy, Aragua being emptied into the U.S.
07:25where they take over Colorado and other places. I do mind.
07:29So you had a different kind of a president.
07:31I hope people are enjoying it because we've never been respected more than we are now.
07:36Yeah, please.
07:38You're going to start that scene.
07:40U.S. President Donald Trump persisted in threatening Venezuelan people amid his interest in seizing their wealth
07:46and condemned the entry of a Venezuelan migrant community into his country during Joe Biden's administration.
07:52There's no answer. He could do whatever he wants. I mean, we have a massive armada formed, the biggest we've ever had,
08:03and by far the biggest we've ever had in South America. He could do whatever he wants. It's all right.
08:10Whatever he wants to do. If he wants to do something, if he plays tough, it'll be the last time he's ever able to play tough.
08:16But they sent their prisoners into us. They sent people from jails, prisons.
08:24They sent people from mental institutions and insane asylums into the United States.
08:29Just walked right in because Biden had an open border policy.
08:39Maduro?
08:40U.S. President Donald Trump sent a threatening message to his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro,
08:45accusing his country of sending cocaine to the United States, ignoring the fact that 70% of the narcotics that enter the U.S. territory come from Ecuador.
08:54United States. He's a very bad, very bad guy. And he's got to watch his ass because he makes cocaine
09:02and they send it into the United States of America from Colombia. We love the Colombian people.
09:08I love the Colombian people. They're great people. Energetic, smart, great. But their new leader is a troublemaker.
09:17And he better watch it. He better close up those cocaine factories. They have at least three major cocaine factories. We know where they are.
09:24He better close them up fast. Yeah.
09:27By the way, it's made and sold into the United States. It comes through Mexico.
09:33And now we have a short break coming up. But first, remember, you can join us on TikTok at Tell us what English,
09:38where you will find news in different formats, news updates and more. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
09:43Welcome back. The government of Mexico announces a justice plan for the miners of the city of Canania,
10:11following the end of more than 18 years of strike. The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum,
10:17added that the Grupo Mexico agreed to carry that a remediation works in response to the contamination of the Sonora River.
10:24The head of state indicated that a support plan, accepted by the workers, will be announced in order to lift the strike
10:31that has been in place since 2007. The Mexican president emphasized that this justice plan benefits all workers in Canania,
10:39noting that this Tuesday, all the projects to address the damage caused to the Sonora River will be presented.
10:46A very important agreement has been reached for the Canania justice plan. After years of strikes,
10:59the workers of the Canania have decided to end the strike through compensation support for all workers.
11:05This is a historic moment for Sonora. At the same time, tomorrow in Sonora, I can tell you in advance,
11:16there will be an announcement about all the compensation work for the contamination of the Sonora River.
11:27After the Mexican group did not want to finish all the work that was necessary. And the Secretary Rosicel has been very important in her work,
11:37and that of the governor and Secretary Alicia Bárcenas, because tomorrow it will be announced that practically all demands made by the community will be met.
11:52Mexican President Clay DeChambon explained that they worked with the governors of Northern Mexico to fulfill the 1994 Water Payment Agreement with the United States.
12:05We worked with all the governors and sought a plan to minimize the impact on farmers throughout the country,
12:11particularly in the states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nueva León, and Tamaulipas.
12:24We then sought to obtain water from other basins to address the water debt. Everyone agreed, and this will allow us to minimize the impact.
12:32There is practically no impact on farmers in Northern Mexico. I believe it was a good agreement.
12:51On the other hand, the Mexican President affirmed that regardless of the political party, the federal government has always provided support to Cuba in the oil sector.
13:00It's important to be known that agreements have been made on the subject of oil by all governments, regardless of their political party, because otherwise it could be seen as if we were the only one.
13:17First, we are doing it within a legal framework as a sovereign country, and second, we are just continuing a series of support that our country has historically given to Cuba.
13:34In 1994, during the special period in Cuba, a $350 million investment was formalized for the modernization of the Cienfuegos refinery, a strategic swap operation exchanging debt for investment.
13:55In other news, cases of dengue and chikungunya continued to decrease in Cuba for eight consecutive weeks.
14:05The information was provided by Cuba's Ministry of Public Health, which detailed that the rate of suspected cases of dengue fell by 31.2%, representing 10.49 per 100,000 inhabitants.
14:18Health authorities also continued to call for strength and prevention measures and medical consultation in the event of symptoms such as high fever, muscle pain or skin rashes, especially in vulnerable groups.
14:31One year after the disappearance of a murder of four Ecuadorian minors from Guayaquil in the Malvinas case, the country's public persecutor's office delivered justice and sentenced the police officers responsible for the crime.
14:56On Monday, the 4th Criminal Court of Guayaquil issued its ruling and convicted existing military personnel for the forced disappearance of Josué and Ismael Arroyo, Steven Medina and Nehmias Arboleda, four Afro-descendant teenagers who disappeared in December 2024 in Guayaquil.
15:15Eleven of those convicted will serve 34 years and eight months in prison, while the five cooperating witnesses will serve 30 months.
15:24Lieutenant Colonel Juan Francisco Iglesias, the 17th defendant, has been found not guilty.

16:53In a statement, the Honduran Attorney General's Office specifies,
16:57The purpose of the action brought is for the competent judicial body to immediately and directly verify the personal situation of the consulars mentioned, in order to guarantee the effective protection of their fundamental rights to freedom, integrity and life, which the Constitution recognizes as the supreme goals of society and the state.

17:43In this context of a crisis in Honduras, opposition protests in front of the National Electoral Council are demanding electoral transparency and denouncing irregularities.
18:02Leaders and supporters of the Liberal Party gather in front of the National Electoral Council in Tegucigalpa to demand a vote-by-vote recount and denounce electoral fraud in the recent Honduran elections.
18:15The protest highlights the profound crisis and credibility that electoral institutions in Honduras are facing and the lack of transparency in democratic processes.
18:24This mobilization joins the popular struggles across Latin America seeking to democratize political systems and defense the sorority of the popular vote.
18:54In Palestine, more than 1,500 Palestinians have been killed or injured by Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip since the beginning of the ceasefire.
19:10Four Palestinians were killed and several were injured in new Israeli attacks against Gaza, bringing the total death toll of the Israeli genocide to over 70,000 mortars and 171,000 injured.
19:22For its part, the Palestinian Ministry of Health indicated that several victims are still under the rubble.
