00:57Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:59I'm Sophie Fernández from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:02We begin with the news.
01:03Stay with us.
01:05From the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:07We begin with the news.
01:08Stay with us.
01:20In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro assured that the country is advancing in the construction
01:25of a foreign model and its past of its own, without interventions or external hegemony.
01:31The Herald State affirmed that the country is consolidating an independent past that is
01:34not a copy of any other model.
01:36Likewise, the President emphasized that the South American nation is not a colony of anyone,
01:42and is committing to the struggle for a multipolar world, following its historical tradition of
01:47resistance.
01:48In the sense, he highlighted the scientific cooperation with allies such as China, Russia,
01:53and Iran to train professionals without needed permission from northern powers.
01:58On the other hand, the President encouraged Venezuelans to be proud of their history.
02:02We are witnessing the emergence of a multipolar world, without colonialism, where there is
02:22an intense struggle between models that seek independence, freedom, world harmony, and
02:28cooperation, and those who claim to be the owners, rulers, and emperors of the world.
02:35We, Venezuela, following the historical and mighty tradition begun by the indigenous resistance.
02:42We are in the world of those who want to be independent, free, and oppose, all forms of colonialism
02:48and slavery, free forever.
03:02Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro also highlighted scientific cooperation with allied nations,
03:07and urged Venezuelans to be proud of their history.
03:11Our brothers and sisters from China, Russia, India, Iran, Mexico, Cuba, and Vietnam, who collaborate
03:26well with all of Venezuela's scientific projects, each one lives their own process, that's how
03:32life is, each one has to live their life, you can't live the life I lived, it's impossible,
03:38I cannot live the life you live, speaking in individual terms, also in terms of people.
03:44Every people has a history, with its cool things, with its good things, with its average things,
03:51and we can say with great humility, with great respect for human diversity, that the history
03:57of the people of Venezuela, is an admirable history.
04:01We should be proud to be Venezuelans, and you girls should be proud to be Venezuelan.
04:08In other news, Trinidad and Tobago faces public backlash at US-backed radar installation in
04:22the Caribbean country, stir fears among growing tensions with Venezuela.
04:27Correspondent, Cristian Hoyt, brings us more details.
04:30Tobago's government has confirmed that the United States is assisting with the installation
04:36of a new radar system in Tobago, a development drawing heightened public interest as US and
04:43Venezuela tensions continue to grow.
04:46Prime Minister Kamala Prasad-Bassassar acknowledged that US technical teams are on island to support
04:52the installation, but did not confirm the presence of US troops beyond those directly involved
04:59in the project.
05:00The red comes after reports of US personnel being seen in Tobago, sparking debate about
05:06the skill and purpose of the collaboration.
05:09Officials maintain the project is limited to strengthening maritime and aviation surveillance,
05:14a standing priority for the country, but the timing has amplified public scrutiny.
05:20Well, I didn't feel good about it because you know it's a region of peace.
05:24And when you see military to income, you had a question because America does that, they
05:28have a doctrine.
05:30You know, America's doctrine, if you know them and you study history, you see what goes on
05:34in the island and you can get a good feeling about it, especially with the government.
05:38You don't know what they're saying, what is true, what is lie.
05:41But that is how the world is.
05:43People come with ideology and idea and they take over and the small people have to suffer.
05:48That is how it is.
05:49But it's not controlled by we, so we've been controlled by the Americans.
05:53Because if them, if the thing feeding back to America, we are not saying somebody is
05:57getting paid, somebody getting something to hold something.
06:01And that is how, when you put government, that is how the politics play.
06:04The new radar will expand monitoring of vessel movement between Trinidad, Tobago and even
06:10border areas closer to Venezuela, which has seen increased activity with a number of airstrikes.
06:18For now, installation continues and authorities insist the upgraded radar will improve Trinidad
06:24and Tobago's ability to protect its borders at a time when the geopolitical landscape in
06:29the southern Caribbean is rapidly evolving.
06:32And now we have a short break coming up.
06:35But first remember you can join us on TikTok at Telo Sur English, where you will find news

06:44Stay with us.
06:47Welcome back to From the South.
06:48The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Gloria De La Fuente, announced a start of
07:04citizens' participation abroad for the second round of the presidential elections this Saturday.
07:10Due to the different time zones, the event will begin in New Zealand when it is 3.30
07:15pm on December 13 in Santiago.
07:18At the time, De La Fuente will declare the polling stations in the cities of Wellington
07:23and Auckland Open in a ceremony broadcast digitally from the Ministry headquarters in
07:29the capital.
07:30According to Electoral Service, a total of 160,935 citizens are eligible to vote abroad.
07:38Unlike the rules in the country, voting abroad is voluntary, although the required documents
07:43are the same, identity card or passport.
07:53In other news on Friday, Peru and Ecuador pledged to work together to combat organized crime
07:57and illegal mining, particularly along their shared border.
08:02These agreements are the result of the 16th meeting of the Binational Cabinet and the presidential
08:07meeting held this Friday in Quito between Ecuadorian president Daniel Novoa and Peruvian
08:12president Jose Heri.
08:14After meeting with the authorities, leaders signed the Quito 2025 presidential declaration,
08:19which outlines 57 commitments for joint action.
08:23Among the most relevant aspects of the document is the recognition of the Andean-Amazonian Transboundary
08:28Conservation Corridor as a binational integration initiative for the protection of ecosystems.
08:42Meanwhile in Bolivia, a judge ordered the preemptive detention of former President Luis Arce for
08:47five months in the San Pedro prison, downtown La Paz.
08:51The detention is for alleged misuse of funds from the indigenous fund.
08:55Former President Luis Arce argued that before the court that he is innocent of the accusations,
09:00and asserted that the charges against him are politically motivated.
09:04In this regard, the defense requested his unconditional release, citing Article 68 of the Law 369, and
09:12the constitutional provisions that guarantee priority medical care for people over 60 years
09:16of age.
09:17The defense also mentioned his advanced age and his delegated state of health, which
09:21requires constant medical attention.
09:33Moving on to Honduras, the president of the National Congress, Luis Redondo, warned that the
09:37general elections of November 30th lack legal and democratic validity.
09:46What we announced yesterday is no longer valid, and that is a process that is underway.
09:52We in Honduras are currently facing a blatant case of multiple crimes.
09:56I'm not the only one saying this, colleagues, the Permanent Commission isn't saying it either.
10:03What we denounced and made public is the article of the electoral law that states that biometrics
10:08must be used.
10:10Furthermore, as you all know, the same council members have come forward to denounce the
10:16ineffectiveness and incompetence of one of the suppliers, repeatedly washing their hands of the matter.
10:22You must remember that when councillor Ana Paula Hall was assaulted, insulted, and attacked by her own party, we did not process that resignation, and she was quite happy that we didn't.
10:35What we are seeing is that we are not going to lend ourselves to friendship, nor do we see sex here.
10:41What we see here is the law.
10:44I hope that they do not play the victim now with this process, because who are the victims?
10:49The victims are you who are interviewing me.
10:51The victims are all the Honduran people.
10:54During statements to the media, Redondo also indicated that the Permanent Commission received
11:03a report detailing how two councillors of the Honduran National Electoral Council, CNE, approved
11:09a resolution that modified the mandatory nature of biometric validation.
11:15We attended meetings with the Standing Committee of the National Council, where we discussed various
11:22topics, including agenda items.
11:26We received a report regarding the resolution issued ours before the November 30th general
11:32election by two council members, Ana Paula and Cosette Lopez.
11:38The law stipulates that any changes to the rules of the game and we all know this here must
11:44be made, even before the call for primary and general elections.
11:49The rules of the game cannot be changed mid-election.
11:54When they made this change, they made the biometric validation comparison non-mandatory, which is
12:00what allows for those who are listening to us, and seeing us to verify with their finger
12:06in when a person goes to vote, whether it is the person voting, or someone else, or simply
12:13no validation is done.
12:19We have a second short break coming up.

12:35Don't go away.
12:51Welcome back.
12:52On Friday, Israel's security cabinet signed off plans to formalize 19 illegal settlements

13:00In a new move aimed for an annexation in the Palestinian territories and in violation of
13:04international law.
13:06The plan was announced by far-right Israeli finance minister Bessel El-Smuthlish.
13:11In a move, Palestinian officials said that deepens a decades-long project of land thefts.
13:17For its part, the Palestinian resistance movement, Hamas, condemned the continued policy of imposition
13:22of colonial facts in the West Bank, stating that these actions constitute a clear violation
13:27of international law and the United Nations Security Council resolutions prohibiting settlement
13:32activity.
13:33Hamas called on the international community, the United Nations, and human rights organizations
13:38to take on the responsibility of defending Palestine in the face of Israel's colonial behavior.
13:57Storm Byron has swept away most across the Gaza Strip, killing at least 14 people and injuring
14:06others as harsh winds and relentless rains affect buildings weakened by Israel's bombardment
14:11and thousands of displaced families.
14:14According to Gaza's Ministry of Interior and National Security, at least 13 buildings previously
14:19hit by Israel's strikes collapsed, while emergency teams have received over 4,300 distress calls
14:26since the storm began.
14:28Medical staff in Gaza reports an alarming rise in deaths linked to exposure, while Palestinians
14:33remain inside collapsing buildings and makeshift shelters, as Israel's authorities continue
14:39to block the entry of essential supplies.
14:42The Ministry also said the police and civil defense teams continue to rescue operations, despite
14:47having almost no equipment or fuel, and urge international actors to pressure Israel to allow critical
14:54aid and shelter materials into the Strip.
15:05In other news, conservationists have warned of worsening threat to wildlife from pushing,

15:26low.
15:27In March 2025, Copernicus shared details showing that the sea ice volume hit a minimum of 1,030
15:34cubic kilometers on March 5th, a 56% drop from the long-term average of 2,390 cubic kilometers.
15:43This is a bleak prospect for the emperor penguins.
15:47The British Antarctic Survey model's projections indicate that they could face extinction by
15:51the close of the century if warming trends continue.
16:03Meanwhile in the United States, record floodwaters began slowly receding in Washington State on
16:08Friday, which triggered evacuations and inundated communities.
16:12However, authorities warned that the water level could remain high for several days and that
16:17the risk of levee failure is still existing.
16:21An unusually strong atmospheric river dumped more than 12 inches of rain in parts of western
16:26Washington over several days, swelling rivers.
16:30No deaths have been reported.
16:33Authorities have yet to estimate the cost, but photos and videos showed widespread flooding
16:37in communities and neighborhoods across western and central Washington.
16:42Officials have conducted dozens of water rescues, debris and mold lies have closed highways,
16:48and raging torrents have washed out roads and breaches.
17:00In other news on Saturday, China observed the 12th National Memorial Day to honor the 300,000
17:05victims killed by Japanese troops during the Naijin Massacre, as this year marks the 80th
17:11anniversary of the end of World War II.
17:14China's national flag flew at a half-staff in front of the crowd that included
17:19survivals of the massacre, local students and international guests.
17:23The Naijin Massacre that occurred when Japanese troops captured the Chinese capital on December
17:2813, 1937.
17:30In the next six weeks, Japanese soldiers killed about 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed

17:41In 2014, China's legislature designated December 13 as the National Memorial Day.
17:53On Friday, the International Forum of High Level was held in Asha Yabad, the largest city in
