00:00The Venezuelan Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace informed that at least 100 people
00:14were killed in the military attack perpetuated by the United States on January 3rd.
00:21In Colombia, citizens mobilized in defense of sovereignty following the recent threats
00:25made by the United States President Petro.
00:31In the United States, an agent of the immigration and customs enforcement's eyes shot and killed
00:36a woman during an immigration-related operation in the city of Minneapolis.
00:41Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:47I'm Sophie Fernandez from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:50We begin with the news.
00:51Stay with us.
00:55The Venezuelan Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace, Justado Cabello, informed on Wednesday
01:09that at least 100 people were killed in the United States military attack on January 3rd.
01:13In this regard, Justado Cabello strongly condemned the military attack by the U.S. government
01:18on the South American country and emphasized that these actions had repercussions on the
01:22civilian population.
01:24We also denounced that the United States violated all the rules of international coexistence and
01:29pointed out that the whole world knows that Nicolás Maduro is a prisoner of war.
01:39Meanwhile, Venezuelans in the state of La Guayra were left homeless and horrified after the
01:44U.S. bombing of residential areas in the early hours of Saturday.
01:48U.S. air strikes on a building in La Guayra state caused several deaths and left 17 families
01:53homeless.
01:54While citizens were asleep, the impact of a missile caused by the building's infrastructure
01:59to collapse, exposing the interiors of homes.
02:02Venezuelan authorities are currently assessing the damage, while medical teams are treating
02:06victims and providing psychological support.
02:09In this context, Venezuela's acting president, El Cigre Liguez, has declared seven days of national
02:13mourning in tribute to the military personnel and civilians who lost their lives defending
02:18the country's sovereignty and President Nicolás Maduro.
02:20Venezuela's acting president, El Cigre Liguez, received Wednesday the formal notification by
02:30the country's National Assembly of the beginning of the new six-year legislative term, 2026-2031.
02:37The ceremony was held at the Simón Bolívar Hall of the Miraflores Palace in Caracas, following
02:41the provisions of the Venezuelan Constitution after the establishment of the new National Assembly
02:46last January 5th.
02:48The event was also attended by the Sectoral Vice President of the Executive Cabinet and
02:53a large parliamentary delegation.
02:55The new board of directors elected for the first legislative year of the 2026-2027 term
03:01is headed by Jorge Rodriguez, as president of the National Assembly, Pedro Infante, first
03:06vice president, and Grecia Colmenares, second vice president.
03:10The parliamentary team is completed by María Alejandra Hernández Aldana, as secretary, and
03:15José Omar Molina as undersecretary.
03:22Branches of the Venezuelan public powers gathered Wednesday to express their unweavering support
03:26for the acting president, El Cigre Liguez, and to demand the immediate and unconditional release
03:31of the constitutional president, Nicolás Maduro Moros, and the first lady, Celia Flores.
03:36The high state officials agreed that the illegal detention of President Maduro and his wife,
03:40Celia Flores, is an imperial aggression and an unfounded political persecution by the imperialist
03:46regime of the United States, seeking to destabilize Venezuela and undermine its democracy.
03:52The authorities expressed their total loyalty to the acting president, El Cigre Liguez, and
03:56affirmed that she has the full support of the state to guarantee governance, national peace,
04:01and the continuity of social programs.
04:08Meanwhile, Venezuela's social groups continued to mobilize, demanding the release of President
04:13Nicolás Maduro and first combatant Celia Flores.
04:16During the demonstrations, commune members retaliated their commitment to peace and the
04:20nation's institutions.
04:22In this sense, the Ministry of People's Power for the Communes and social leaders affirmed that
04:26the mobilization retributed the condemnation of the US illegal attacks and its attempts at domination.
04:32After several days of mobilization to defend national sovereignty, the Venezuelan people
04:36assured that they will continue their active struggle for the release of the presidential couple.
04:40President Maduro prepared us for this, and what can we ask today to the communes, what can we ask
04:54to the communes, men and women, first, confidence and trust in the high political command of the
05:03Bolivar revolution, do not let yourselves be carried by intrigues and by rumors.
05:08Trust in Delci Rodriguez Gomez, confidence in Diosdado Cabello, confidence in Jorge Rodriguez,
05:16and trust as well in our party, trust in the Minister Ángel Prado, and in each communal council,
05:29unity of the command.
05:32And may you know that even if they say there that these people do not know things, may you
05:41know that there where the march passed by, by the golden door of the palace of Miraflores,
05:48we will see entry sooner than later the President Nicolás Maduro holding hands with his wife,
05:56Celia Flores de Maduro, and they will return and we will hug them, and you will hug them on the streets.
06:03In this regard, Jorge Arreaza assured that external threats and imperial attacks against the country
06:11will only serve to deepen the revolutionary process and communal democracy.
06:15That is why in this hard process that our President in charge by the circumstances that she would have never wanted to live,
06:28we have to trust in her because it is a process that is difficult of dialogue.
06:36It is a process that is difficult of construction of steps to follow when they have our President
06:47and his wife kidnapped when they threaten with more military attacks.
06:54But the companion from Barlovento already said it clearly.
07:02The commander Chavez and President Maduro have always talked on a thesis of Antonio Gramsci,
07:08the importance of the whip of the counter-revolution. Do you remember?
07:14The whip of the counter-revolution does not do anything but move and push the revolution.
07:21But here in Venezuela, the imperial bombs of the counter-revolution will not do anything but deepen
07:27the Bolivarian revolution, the communal democracy, the communal state, and for that we must prepare ourselves.
07:36For his part, Venezuelan Ambassador Samuel Moncada denounced Wednesday the unjustified aggression
07:41of the United States government against Venezuela before the United Nations Organization.
07:46In a statement, the Venezuelan government announced,
07:48In the morning hours of today, January 7, 2026, the permanent representative of the Bolivarian
07:54Republic of Venezuela to the United Nations, Ambassador Samuel Moncada, held a bilateral meeting
07:59with the Under-Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres.
08:04Moncada gave a detailed account of the events related to the armed attack that took place in Venezuela.
08:10He explained that the aggression included the massive deployment of aircraft, combat helicopters,
08:15and special forces, in a progressive operation dating back to at least August of this year,
08:20when the build-off of U.S. military forces in the Caribbean began.
08:24On the other hand, the statement informed that,
08:27The United Nations Secretary General said that the recent U.S. military incursion in the Venezuelan
08:32territory was a fraudulent violation of the U.N. Charter and the rules of international law.
08:37And the Venezuelan state-owned oil company, PDVSA, informed Wednesday that it was currently in talks
08:48for the sale of crude oil volumes to the United States. The Venezuelan oil giant informed in a
08:54report that the negotiations are taking place within the framework of the commercial relations
08:59that exist between both countries. This process is being carried out under schemes similar to those
09:04in place with international companies such as Chevron, based on strictly commercial transactions with
09:10criteria of legality, transparency and benefits for both parties. PDVSA also reaffirms its commitment
09:17to continue building alliances that promote national development in favor of the Venezuelan people
09:22and contribute to global energy stability.
09:24And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok and Tell us
09:32with English, where you will find new significant formats, news updates and more. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
09:38Welcome back. Social movements in Spain call on the European Union to any support for the United
09:55States and demand the release of the President of Venezuela. The social movements have called for
10:00the liberation of oppressed peoples and have demanded that the European Union countries abandon their policy
10:06of collaboration with the Trump administration. The protesters warned that the attack against
10:10Venezuela sets a dangerous precedent that violates international law. Finally, they demand the immediate
10:16recomposition of the international order, emphasizing that the threat against the Venezuelan people also
10:22represents a threat against all peoples. Well, there are many citizens of Málaga here and we are not
10:31willing to tolerate imperialist aggression such as the perpetrated by the Trump administration against
10:37Venezuela. What has happened in Venezuela is so blatant, a gross violation of international law.
10:42They say they defend democracy. They use drug trafficking as an excuse. But the truth is that they are after
10:48natural resources. And the truth is that they are starting in Venezuela. But this could get much worse.
10:54That is why we call on democratic governments to immediately distance themselves from Trump's imperial policy.
11:01We are here to denounce the fascism that prevailed throughout the world, which has done one of the most
11:06serious things that can be done, which is invading a sovereign country, taking the president away,
11:11kidnapping him, and treating armed intervention if their demands are not met. Without any kind of
11:16request to the UN or even NATO, they have not even asked NATO for permission to intervene. And if we don't
11:23stop them now, they will continue to treat in the rest of the world with increasing force.
11:27For its part, the Mexican government supports the sovereignty of countries to decide on their
11:33natural resources. Amidst the United States aggression against Venezuela, Mexican President
11:38Clyde Sheinbaum reaffirmed her strong stance in defense of the self-determination of the peoples.
11:44Mexican leader rejected any foreign nation that seeks to take control of the side on the natural
11:50resources of another country. Sheinbaum noted that beyond the internal political crisis that any state may
11:56experience, the management of its strategic assets, such as oil, should fall on its own institutions and people.
12:02I believe that every country has the sovereignty to decide what to do with its natural resources.
12:21I don't think one country or nation should decide for another, no matter how small the issue may be.
12:27That is part of Mexico's foreign policy and we believe it to be so. It is our conviction that every
12:33sovereign country has to do with their deciding on its natural resources beyond the vision of another
12:41country. Which is what we think, that if we want to make the continent an economic power with integration,
12:52the way forward must not be by force, but rather the opposite cooperation for development, which would
13:01be beneficial for Latin America and the entire American continent. Yes, it has helped Mexico. They
13:08have tried commercial and the United States to Canada as well to have the possibility of making the
13:15continent an economic power, but based on cooperation for development, not the use of force.
13:26Meanwhile in Colombia, citizens mobilized in defense of sovereignty following the recent threats made by
13:31the United States President against Petro. The mobilization also had the intent of showing the
13:36people's rejection of the military aggression against Venezuela. Colombian social movements joined the
13:42president's call to mobilize as a response to the announcement of a possible military invasion of
13:47the United States to their country. President Gustavo Petro emphasized the call is for Colombia to awaken
13:53and take a stand against colonialism, which is once again seeking to impose itself in the region. The call comes
13:59after recent U.S. attacks in Venezuela, which various organizations and political leaders concur represents a real
14:06threat to all the countries in the region. In other news in the United States, an agent of the Immigration and
14:16Customs Enforcement, ICE, shot and killed a woman during an immigration-related operation in the
14:21Minnesota city of Minneapolis. An initial statement issued by the Department of Homeland Security claimed the victim,
14:28identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Goode, was shot after she attempted to run over law enforcement officers.
14:36However, local authorities have raised concerns about the circumstances behind the shooting and rejected
14:41the self-defense justification. In the aftermath, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey accused the agents of
14:47recursively using his power, resulting in somebody getting killed. He colonized agents to leave the city,
14:54asserting that federal immigration authorities were ripping families apart and sewing tails in Minneapolis
14:59streets. In other news, the United States announced the seizure of the Russian oil tanker Marinera,
15:10which it accuses of an alleged violation of U.S. sanctions. On January 6, the Russian company
15:17Burevenstarmanin denounced the U.S. attempt to intercept the tanker in the middle of a storm. However,
15:23despite the captain's attempts to prove that he was not carrying any cargo, as well as the fact that
15:28he was a civilian, the ship was pursued by P-8A Poseidon aircraft belonging to the U.S. Navy. At the time
15:36of the seizure, the tanker was in the international waters of the North Atlantic under the Russian
15:40flock, in full compliance with the International Maritime Law, when it was intercepted by the European
15:46command of the United States.
15:55For its part, the Russian Ministry of Transport condemned the detention by the U.S. Navy of a
15:59Marinera tanker flying the Russian flag in the North Atlantic. In response to the seizure, the AGC stated,
16:05On December 24, 2025, the Marinera vessel was granted a temporary permit to sail under the state
16:11flag of the Russian Federation, issued in accordance with Russian law and the rules of international law.
16:18The Ministry also stated, today at approximately 3 pm Moscow time, on the open sea, outside the
16:24territorial waters of any state, the U.S. naval forces boarded the vessel. The communication with the
16:30vessel was then lost. The Transport Ministry also expressed, in accordance with the Provincials of 1982
16:37United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, the high seas are governed by the principle of freedom
16:42and navigation, and no state has the right to use force against vessels duly registered under the
16:48jurisdiction of other states.
16:50In the same context, the United States sees another oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea.
17:00This is a tanker M.T. Sofia, which had departed from Venezuela, bound for Russia.
17:06The seizure adds to the interventionist military actions carried out by the United States in the
17:10Caribbean Sea in the framework of aggressions against Latin America since September 2025.
17:15Since that date, more than 34 boats have been destroyed in 28 attacks, where at least 100 people were killed.

17:45Welcome back. Heavy snowfall and torrential rains are causing widespread chaos in some European countries,
18:04with flooding and transport disruption being the main issues. Low temperatures are hitting countries
18:10such as Scotland, France, Italy, Spain, and Germany, among others. However, the Netherlands is one of the
18:16most critical points so far, forcing the authorities to declare a state of emergency. Amsterdam's Kieffel airport
18:23remains completely close. While in Germany, the authorities have declared a yellow alert in 12
18:28provinces and coastal flights due to heavy snowfall. In Spain, 271 families were evacuated after rivers
18:35flooded in the south and center of the country, while Italy and the United Kingdom warned of extreme
18:40conditions. Moving to Argentina, 16 provinces are on high alert due to the risk of forest fires caused
18:51by weather conditions affecting the South American country. The National Weather Service reported that
18:57the fire destroyed 11,782 hectares in Neuquen, 10,218 in Rio Negro, and 9,722 in Chubut. In this scenario,
19:08extreme danger warnings include Patagonia, Buenos Aires, the central region and part of the coast.
19:13Meteorological authorities affirm that the funds allocated to the National Fire Management Service
19:19have been insufficient, and that since 2024, there has been an 80 percent reduction that has affected early
19:25warnings under the equipment of firefighting brigades. In Japan, according to meteorological authorities,
19:38more than 30 earthquakes shook Japanese territory in 24 hours. Reports detail that the western region
19:44was shaken by a series of 6.2 magnitude earthquakes. Also, nearly 33 telluric movements were reported,
19:52with a magnitude ranging from 2.8 to 6.2. The climatic phenomenon caused at least five people to be
19:59injured and several buildings to suffer infrastructural damage.
20:12In the occupied West Bank, at least seven citizens were injured by tear gas attacks during an Israeli raid carried out on Tuesday night in the Aqaba region near
20:33Tubas. Zionist forces raided residential areas in the city of Aqaba, with several military vehicles firing
20:40stun grenades and tear gas canisters. In this scenario, emergency services confirmed that ambulance crews
20:46treated at least six cases of tear gas inhalation and one case of physical assault after Israeli soldiers
20:53beat a resident during the operation. Israeli military forces also attacked other areas in the North and West Bank,
21:00including the cities of Nablus and Jenin.
21:08In addition, the United Nations warned of the need for assistance and shelter in the Gaza Strip.
21:12According to reports, nearly 65,000 families were affected by the winter storms in December.
21:18The international organization emphasized the importance of moving forward more lasting solutions,
21:24including the repair of houses and the provision of land for the relocation of Palestinian families.
21:38And in Palestine, the occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem became the epicenter of Eastern Christianity
21:44with the solemn Christmas Eve Liturgy in Nativity Basiliska. This celebration brings the festive spirit
21:50back to the Holy Land, just when most of the Western world and Catholic traditions have left their December
21:56celebrations behind. This chronological system runs 13 days behind the international standard,
22:02which places the Holy Day of Christmas on this Wednesday. The ceremony not only represents an act of deep
22:08religious devotion, but also functions as a bridge to the earliest roots of the Church.
22:14This religious fervor spread with force to Egypt, where the Coptic Christian minority flocked to
22:27churches to celebrate Christmas Eve mass. In Cairo, the faithful gathered at the shores of Archangel Michael,
22:34with their shared feelings of hope, lifting prayers for world peace and economic stability. Local residents
22:40express their collective desire for the conflicts affecting the Arab region and the rest of the
22:45world to be resolved peacefully, emphasizing the role of these holidays as a refuge of spiritual
22:51lethality in our central times.
