00:52Hello, welcome to From the South, I'm Sophie Fernandes from the Telesur Studios in Havana,
01:01Cuba.
01:02We begin with the news.
01:03Stay with us.
01:04From the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
01:06We begin with the news.
01:07Stay with us.
01:08Stay with us.
01:20In Venezuela, President Nicolás Maduro assured that the country is advancing in the construction
01:25of a foreign model and its path of its own, without interventions or external hegemony.
01:30The head of state affirmed that the country is consolidating an independent path that is
01:34not a copy of any other model.
01:36Likewise, the President emphasized that the South American nation is not a colony of anyone,
01:41and is committing to the struggle for a multipolar world, following its historical tradition of
01:47resistance.
01:48In the sense, he highlighted the scientific cooperation with allies such as China, Russia and Iran,
01:54to train professionals without needed permission from northern powers.
01:58On the other hand, the President encouraged Venezuelans to be proud of their history.
02:16We are witnessing the emergence of a multipolar world, without colonialism, where there is an
02:22intense struggle between models that seek independence, freedom, world harmony, and
02:28cooperation, and cooperation, and those who claim to be the owners, rulers, and emperors
02:33of the world.
02:34We, Venezuela, following the historical and mighty tradition begun by the indigenous resistance,
02:42we are in the world of those who want to be independent, free, and oppose, all forms
02:47of colonialism and slavery, free forever.
03:02Venezuelan President Nicolas Melo also highlighted scientific cooperation with allied nations,
03:07leaders of the United States.
03:08Venezuelans to be proud of their history.
03:12Our brothers and sisters from China, Russia, India, Iran, Mexico, Cuba, and Vietnam, who collaborate
03:26well with all of Venezuela's scientific projects.
03:29Each one lives their own process.
03:32That's how life is.
03:33Each one has to live their life.
03:34You can't live the life I lived.
03:36It's impossible.
03:37I cannot live the life you live.
03:40Speaking in individual terms, also in terms of people, every people has a history, with
03:46its cool things, with its good things, with its average things.
03:51And we can say with great humility, with great respect for human diversity, that the history
03:57of the people of Venezuela is an admirable history.
04:01We should be proud to be Venezuelans, and you girls should be proud to be Venezuelan.
04:07Admirable.
04:08Debemos sentirnos orgullosos de ser venezolano, y ustedes muchachas de ser venezolana.
04:16In other news, Trinidad and Tobago faces public backlash at US-backed radar installation in
04:22the Caribbean country, steer fears among growing tensions with Venezuela.
04:27Our correspondent, Cristian Hoyt, brings us more details.
04:30The Tobago government has confirmed that the United States is assisting with the installation
04:36of a new radar system in Tobago, a development drawing heightened public interest as US and
04:43Venezuela tensions continue to grow.
04:46Prime Minister Kamala Prasad-Bassassar acknowledged that US technical teams are on island to support
04:52the installation, but did not confirm the presence of US troops beyond those directly involved
04:59in the project.
05:00The red comes after reports of US personnel being seen in Tobago sparking debate about the
05:06scale and purpose of the collaboration.
05:09has maintained the project is limited to strengthening maritime and aviation surveillance, a standing
05:15priority for the country.
05:16But the timing has amplified public scrutiny.
05:20Well, I didn't feel good about it because you know it's a region of peace.
05:23And when you say military to income, you had a question because America does that.
05:27They have a doctrine.
05:29You know, American doctrine, if you know them and you study history, you see what goes on
05:33in the island and you can't get a good feeling about it, especially with the government.
05:37You don't know what they're saying, what is true, what is like.
05:40But that is how the world is.
05:42People come with ideology and ideas and they take over and the small people have to suffer.
05:47That is how it is.
05:48But it's not controlled by us, so we've been controlled by the Americans.
05:52The new radar will expand monitoring of vessel movement between Trinidad, Tobago and even
06:09border areas closer to Venezuela, which has seen increased activity with a number of airstrikes.
06:17For now, installation continues and authorities insist the upgraded radar will improve Trinidad
06:23and Tobago's ability to protect its borders at a time when the geopolitical landscape in
06:28the southern Caribbean is rapidly evolving.
06:32And now we have a short break coming up.
06:34But first, remember you can join us on TikTok at Tell us what English, where you will find
06:38news in different formats, news updates and more.
06:41Stay with us.
06:47Welcome back to From the South.
06:56The Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of Chile, Gloria De La Fuente, announced start of citizens'
07:02participation abroad for the second round of the presidential elections this Saturday.
07:06Due to the different time zones, the event will begin in New Zealand when it is 3.30 pm on
07:13December 13 in Santiago.
07:15At the time, De La Fuente will declare the polling stations in the cities of Wellington
07:20and Auckland Open in a ceremony broadcast digitally from the ministry headquarters in the capital.
07:27According to the electoral service, a total of 160,935 citizens are eligible to vote abroad.
07:35Unlike the rules in the country, voting abroad is voluntary, although the required documents
07:40are the same, identity card or passport.
07:50In other news on Friday, Peru and Ecuador pledged to work together to combat organized crime and
07:55illegal mining, particularly along their shared border.
07:59These agreements are the result of the 16th meeting of the Binational Cabinet, and the presidential
08:04meeting held this Friday in Quito, between Ecuadorian President Daniel Novoa and Peruvian
08:09President Jose Heri.
08:10After meeting with the authorities, leaders signed the Quito 2025 presidential declaration,
08:16which outlines 57 commitments for joint action.
08:19Among the most relevant aspects of the document is the recognition of the Andean Amazonian Transboundary
08:25Conservation Corridor as a binational integration initiative for the protection of ecosystems.
08:31Meanwhile in Bolivia, a judge ordered the preemptive detention of former President Luis Arce for
08:44five months in the San Pedro prison, downtown La Paz.
08:47The detention is for alleged misuse of funds from the indigenous fund.
08:51Former President Luis Arce argued that before the court that he is innocent of the accusations,
08:56and asserted that the charges against him are politically motivated.
09:01In this regard, the defense requested his unconditional release, citing Article 68 of the Law 369,
09:08and the constitutional provisions that guarantee priority medical care for people over 60 years of age.
09:14The defense also mentioned his advanced age and his delegated state of health, which requires constant medical attention.
09:21Moving on to Honduras, the President of the National Congress, Luis Redondo, warned that the general elections of November 30th
09:36lack legal and democratic validity.
09:43What we announced yesterday is no longer valid, and that is a process that is underway.
09:48We in Honduras are currently facing a blatant case of multiple crimes.
09:53I'm not the only one saying this, colleagues.
09:57The Permanent Commission isn't saying it either.
10:00What we denounced and made public is the article of the electoral law that states that biometrics must be used.
10:07Furthermore, as you all know, the same council members have come forward to denounce the ineffectiveness and incompetence of one of the suppliers,
10:16repeatedly washing their hands of the matter.
10:19You must remember that when Councillor Ana Paula Hall was assaulted, insulted, and attacked by her own party,
10:27we did not process that resignation, and she was quite happy that we didn't.
10:32What we are seeing is that we are not going to lend ourselves to friendship, nor do we see sex here.
10:38What we see here is the law.
10:40I hope that they do not play the victim now with this process because who are the victims?
10:45The victims are you who are interviewing me. The victims are all the Honduran people.
10:55During statements to the media, Redondo also indicated that the Permanent Commission received a report
11:00detailing how two consulars of the Honduran National Electoral Council approved a resolution that modified the mandatory nature of biometric validation.
11:09We attended meetings with the Standing Committee of the National Council, where we discussed various topics, including agenda items.
11:22We received a report regarding the resolution issued hours before the November 30th general election by two council members, Ana Paula and Cosette Lopez.
11:35The law stipulates that any changes to the rules of the game and we all know this here must be made, even before the call for primary and general elections.
11:46The rules of the game cannot be changed mid-election. When they made this change, they made the biometric validation comparison non-mandatory, which is what allows for those who are listening to us, and seeing us to verify with their finger in when a person goes to vote, whether it is the person voting, or someone else, or simply no validation is done.

12:29Final short break, but we'll be right back with more from the South. Don't go away.
12:43Welcome back. On Friday, Israel's Security Cabinet signed off plans to formalize 19 illegal settlements across the occupied West Bank, in a new move aimed for annexating the Palestinian territories and in violation of international law.
13:01The plan was announced by far-right Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smutlish, in a move Palestinian officials said that deepens a decades-long project of land thefts.
13:12For its part, the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas condemned the continued policy of imposition of colonial facts in the West Bank, stating that these actions constitute a clear violation of international law and the United Nations Security Council resolutions prohibiting settlement activity.
13:28Hamas called on the international community, the United Nations and human rights organizations to take on the responsibility of defending Palestine in the face of Israel's colonial behavior.
13:39The United Nations and human rights members are in the innocent.
13:52Streaming the plain is the main спасet-on.
13:53The U.S.-P.O.S.
13:57Storm Byron has swept away most across the Gaza Strip, killing at least 14 people and injuring others,
14:02as harsh winds and relentless rains affect buildings weakened by Israel bombardment
14:08and thousands of displaced families. According to Gaza's Ministry of Interior and National Security,
14:14at least 13 buildings previously hit by Israel strikes collapsed,
14:18while emergency teams have received over 4,300 distress calls since the storm began.
14:24Medical staff in Gaza reports an alarming rise in deaths linked to exposure,
14:29while Palestinians remain inside collapsing buildings and makeshift shelters,
14:34as Israel's authorities continue to block the entry of essential supplies.
14:38The Ministry also said the police and civil defence teams continue to rescue operations,
14:43despite having almost no equipment or fuel, and urge international actors to pressure
14:48Israel to allow critical aid and sheltered materials into the Strip.
15:02In other news, conservationists have warned of worsening threat to wildlife from pushing
15:07habitat loss, pollution and climate change. While there have been conservation successes in 2025,
15:14some species are threats of extinction. The European Union's Earth Observation Programme says Antarctica
15:20sea ice is at a near-record low. In March 2025, Copernicus shared details showing that the sea ice
15:27volume hit a minimum of 1,030 cubic kilometers on March 5th, a 56% drop from the long-term average of
15:362,390 cubic kilometers. This is a bleak prospect for the Emperor Penguins, but British Antarctic Survey
15:44model's projections indicate that they could face extinction by the close of the century if warming trends continue.
15:59Meanwhile, in the United States, record floodwaters began slowly receding in Washington State on Friday,
16:05which triggered evacuations and inundated communities. However, authorities warned that the water level
16:11could remain high for several days and that the risk of levee failure is still existing.
16:18An unusually strong atmospheric river dumped more than 12 inches of rain in parts of western Washington
16:24over several days, swelling rivers. No deaths have been reported. Authorities have yet to estimate the cost,
16:31but photos and videos showed widespread flooding in communities and neighborhoods across western
16:36and central Washington. Officials have conducted dozens of water rescues. Debris and mudlides have
16:43closed highways, and raging torrents have washed out roads and bridges.
16:47In other news on Saturday, China observed the 12th National Memorial Day to honor the 300,000 victims
17:02killed by Japanese troops during the Naijin massacre, as this year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of
17:08World War II. China's national flag flew at a half-staff in front of the crowd that included
17:15survivors of the massacre, local students and international guests. The Naijin massacre that
17:20occurred when Japanese troops captured the Chinese capital on December 13, 1937. In the next six weeks,
17:28Japanese soldiers killed about 300,000 Chinese civilians and unarmed soldiers,
17:33making it one of the most barbaric episodes of World War II. In 2014, China's legislature designated
17:40December 13 as the National Memorial Day.
17:51On Friday, the International Forum of High Level was held in Asha Yabad, the largest city in Turkmenistan,
17:57dedicated to the International Year of Peace and Trust and the celebration of the 30th anniversary
18:02of the nation's neutrality. More than 30 countries were represented, including heads of state and
18:09governments such as the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan,
18:15and Iran, Massoud Peshezkyan. Among the topics discussed at the meeting were the search for
18:20consensual solutions to international problems and the implementation of bilateral and multilateral
18:26agreements. In addition to the aforementioned heads of state, the presidents of Kazakhstan,
18:31Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan, accompanied by the heads of other countries in Central Asia and the region,
18:38also attended. The Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized his support for peaceful international
18:44relations, as set out in the UN Charter.
18:53And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief. You can find this and many other stories
