A video showing a young man holding the feet of his mother-in-law on a busy road in Aligarh district of Uttar Pradesh has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention. The man is seen lying at her feet and pleading, while the woman ignores him and refuses to engage. The incident has now been linked to an ongoing family dispute.
The man has been identified as Sanjay, a resident of Mathura, who is married to Lakshmi from the Gonda area of Aligarh. The couple has three children. According to Sanjay, he suspects his wife of having an extramarital affair and claims to possess a video in which she is seen with another man. He alleged that despite informing his in-laws, they supported their daughter and even threatened to kill him.
Sanjay said he later lodged a complaint against Lakshmi at the women’s police station, after which police initiated efforts to mediate between the two sides.
On Monday, both Sanjay and Lakshmi reached the women’s police station as part of the counselling process. During this time, Sanjay reportedly fell at the feet of his mother-in-law, Omvati, within the police station premises, requesting that his wife be sent back with him. His plea was rejected by the mother-in-law. A video of this episode later surfaced and went viral.
Speaking to the media, Sanjay said he had gone to plead for his wife’s return. He claimed that Lakshmi had undergone surgery and that he was falsely accused of beating her. “I have never raised my hand on her. I still send her money for expenses, yet she is having an affair with another man,” he alleged.
He further said that the couple’s eldest son, aged eight, is disabled and has not received proper treatment. Sanjay claimed that his wife took away the money meant for the children and that his in-laws were threatening his life.
Sanjay also appealed to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help, seeking action against the man he accused and against his wife, and alleging bias against him in the dispute.
Police said the matter is under mediation and that appropriate action will be taken after examining the allegations of both parties.
