00:00For our lunch stop in South Virginia.
00:02Okay, cool.
00:03So I'm glad these two know what's going on
00:05because like I said, my job is to just drive that Nissan.
00:07That's what I do.
00:08My job is to make Lug look good.
00:09And my job is to make Brannan look good.
00:12That's exactly right.
00:14Welcome to Sam's Garage, presented by NH Oil Undercoding.
00:30This week on Sam's Garage,
00:54the great race rolls to the Midwest,
00:56including hidden checkpoints,
00:58rookie nerves, and plenty of friendly trash talk.
01:02We'll meet the crews who wrench, navigate,
01:05and improvise their way across America.
01:08Then head to Southfield Classics,
01:10where EV hot riding gets high voltage and high tech.
01:16And later, Sam gets hands-on with Rogo Fastener's
01:20American-made gear,
01:21because when your bolts don't back out,
01:23neither do you.
01:28We have 135-plus cars in the great race.
01:35Checkpoints along the way that they don't know in advance,
01:38and so the goal is you're going to stay on target.
01:40From start to finish, it's like family to me.
01:42Keeping it maintained, keeping it running hard.
01:45It's a complete family member.
01:47It's an experience.
01:48All the workers, all the towns that have been welcoming us.
01:51Winning an ace in the great race is just,
01:53it's one of the things that just lifts you up.
01:55Were we on time and everybody else was wrong?
01:57Were they on time and we were wrong?
01:59I guess we'll find out tonight.
02:01New drivers, old iron, and one goal.
02:04Don't get lost.
02:06From rookies earning their first ace
02:08to veterans keeping the wheels turning,
02:11it's all part of the great race chaos we love.
02:21So Sam Madavi, Sam's Garage TV show,
02:25came along on the great race last year,
02:28did a segment of the great race,
02:29videoed them doing the race,
02:31and kind of had that as like a 10-minute little segment
02:34of their show.
02:35Every show showed that.
02:37They decided that it was so much fun
02:39or so much challenging
02:40that they wanted to come back and try it again.
02:42And that's what they're doing.
02:44They'll come by here in just a little bit.
02:46We'll shout them out when they get here,
02:47but they're doing a larger segment of the show this year
02:50featuring the race
02:51and showing what it takes to do the race
02:53before, during, and after.
02:56So you'll get a good video
02:57of what's happening inside that car
02:59between the drivers and navigators.
03:01Really cool things that they're doing,
03:03but that's what this is about
03:04is the Sam's Garage,
03:07the TV show, Sam Madavi.
03:12First time doing it,
03:13you're only a rookie for one time,
03:15your first year.
03:16We did go to the Spring Rally
03:18a couple months ago
03:19to kind of learn the process
03:21of putting it all together.
03:23We did good there.
03:24We were the rookie winners
03:25for the Spring Rally,
03:26and we also were the rookie winners
03:29yesterday for the Trophy Run.
03:31An ace is you get a score of a zero
03:35on one of the checkpoints.
03:36There's five or six hidden checkpoints a day,
03:39and if you do everything right,
03:41the race master knows
03:42at what time we're supposed to be
03:43at that checkpoint.
03:45And if you get there at second zero,
03:47and you get a zero on that leg,
03:49they give you an ace.
03:50You get to put it on your car
03:51to tell everybody how good you did
03:54that day.
03:54It's everybody here
04:01has been really great.
04:02They're all trying to be helpful
04:04and really encouraging,
04:07which makes the experience even better.
04:09Hopefully, us being able
04:10to share our content
04:11as we go throughout the race
04:13will help encourage more people
04:15of different demographics,
04:17different ages,
04:18that they might be open
04:19to maybe coming to one of the stops
04:22to see the show
04:23or actually participating.
04:28Really, all the guys
04:29on the support group
04:30can pretty much do almost any job,
04:33either drive or navigate.
04:34Now, this being a first-year guy,
04:36he's not into navigation yet.
04:38We chose guys to be on the team
04:39who could really do multiple jobs.
04:45I'm a navigator,
04:47so I would love to do this.
04:49I won't ever,
04:50but this is right up my alley,
04:52so I'm so fun.
04:53And he took his driver's test
04:59and had his first date
05:00in this car.
05:01That's more information than they want.
05:07We're the oldest car club
05:09in the Cedar Valley
05:11here in Waterloo.
05:12We were originally in 1955,
05:15and we're still in existence
05:19and still gaining members
05:21every once in a while.
05:23And the car club does different things
05:25throughout the whole city,
05:27goes to car shows,
05:29puts on demonstrations.
05:31We like to put on a car display,
05:34not so much a car show,
05:36but a display just so people can come in
05:39and see all the different cars.
05:45Sam's Garage is presented by NHOU.
05:50Brought to you by the following companies.
06:09Welcome back to Sam's Garage,
06:24presented by NH Oil Undercoating.
06:26New drivers,
06:28old cars,
06:29and more caffeine than since.
06:31From student-built power wagons
06:34to ace-chasing rookies,
06:35the great race proves classic cars
06:38and their crews
06:39still have plenty of miles
06:41left in the tank.
06:43You know,
06:43our corporate sponsor
06:44is Team Hagerty,
06:45but we also have Rogo
06:47that stepped up.
06:47So Rogo Fastener Company,
06:49Dan and his crew,
06:50the Rogo Fastener team,
06:51we've been having a great time.
06:53Dana loves getting all this swag.
06:54She's got,
06:55I got a pink hat.
06:56She's got a hoodie.
06:57She's like,
06:57she's been trying to wear
06:58the hoodie around,
06:59but it's a little hot for the hoodie.
07:01Yeah, a huge shout out to Rogo,
07:03a great sponsor for us this year.
07:05And these two on the first day
07:12got an ace.
07:14Our first great race.
07:16So we're rookies.
07:17So that's a really big deal for us.
07:19Very big deal.
07:19Especially when I missed a turn,
07:21but you didn't miss the one
07:22that was on the ace deal.
07:23Very good job.
07:24We did miss one turn, yes.
07:26We haven't gotten close to an ace,
07:27and I'm going to predict
07:28that we're not going to even get close
07:29to an ace this whole week,
07:31but we're going to have the most fun, right?
07:33Right.
07:33Oh, yeah.
07:33I'm a student at McPherson College
07:35for automotive restoration.
07:36So I go there to learn
07:37every single aspect
07:38of restoring classic cars
07:40and how to do it with the tools
07:41that existed in the 70s.
07:43That is so cool.
07:44This is sort of my whole world,
07:45old race cars,
07:46things breaking down,
07:47fixing them as it happens.
07:48So this is absolutely like heaven for me.
07:50And you said you're a vintage car mechanic
07:52when you're not doing the rally racing.
07:53Yes, I am.
07:54I work on vintage race cars,
07:55go with them to the racetrack,
07:56and when things break,
07:57I'm there to help out
07:58and get them back out on the track.
07:59And you found her
08:00at the Jesse Combs Foundation.
08:00Yes, we met through SEMA
08:02and the Jesse Combs Foundation.
08:03I was the Rising Star Awards recipient
08:06on the 23rd year.
08:08Yep.
08:08I said that's strange.
08:09That's very cool.
08:10But I met Joe last year through that,
08:12and Dana put us together,
08:14and we've been rocking and rolling ever since.
08:15Back in 2017,
08:24we said,
08:25okay, we're going to do this one time.
08:26I asked my buddy Brandon,
08:27I said,
08:27hey, you're a civil engineer.
08:29You know,
08:29do you think you could figure out
08:31how to do this whole great race thing?
08:32And he says, absolutely.
08:33So he got in there,
08:35we were going to do this one time together,
08:36and now eight years later,
08:37it's been the longest one-time adventure
08:39I've ever done in my life.
08:41Rookie division was awesome.
08:42We got the building blocks
08:43and the foundation
08:44of being able to actually do the rallying.
08:47We'd never done a time-speed
08:47and distance rally prior.
08:49And now,
08:50I think we're pretty much old experts,
08:53you know,
08:53as the moniker would say.
08:55We just really enjoy it.
08:56I think we had a lot more fun,
08:57maybe,
08:58in our rookie year
08:58when we were just kind of
09:00guessing on the seam of our pants,
09:01but now we're a lot more precise,
09:03and the scores are a lot more fun
09:04to look at when we get in each day.
09:06We're driving a 1953 Dodge Power Wagon.
09:17I'm the freshman motorsports instructor
09:20at Alfred State College.
09:22I have three of my freshman
09:23motorsports students with me,
09:25and then two automotive students
09:27who are going to be continuing
09:29their education after this.
09:30So I got a team of five students,
09:32and we're driving the 53 Dodge Power Wagon,
09:36hopefully,
09:36to the end in South Carolina.
09:39We're in the X-Cup category.
09:40It's for college and high school teams
09:43to get students involved
09:45with classic cars.
09:47You know,
09:47it gives them a chance
09:48to see a whole bunch
09:49of classic cars.
09:55Three aces, rookies.
09:57That's so impressive.
09:58Have you guys been good
09:59to each other in the car?
10:00We had one little day yesterday.
10:01Yesterday was bad,
10:02and we looked at each other
10:04after we did it.
10:04We said, all right,
10:04no more of that,
10:05and it lasted about five seconds.
10:07Surprisingly,
10:07I thought it was going to happen
10:08the first day and the second day,
10:10and at the end of every day,
10:11we kind of leaned over
10:12and looked at each other
10:13and hugged and kissed
10:14before we ever ride.
10:14If we just kind of breathe,
10:16when it's over,
10:16I don't have to tell you,
10:17it's, you're, you're, you're done.
10:19Yeah, you just relax.
10:20I mean, you're mentally,
10:20you're physically.
10:21It's very enduring
10:22on the people
10:23as well as the car.
10:23It's like riding motorcycles.
10:24You get arm burned.
10:25I mean, it's, it's, it's crazy.
10:27You can't explain it.
10:40And what kind of results
10:42have you seen
10:42from the customers?
10:43You got any feedback from them?
10:45For us, to sell, it's easy.
10:46Now, more or less,
10:47we're just providing a service
10:48for the product.
10:49For you guys to have
10:50the reputation that you have
10:50and the backlog that you have,
10:51that means that you do
10:52everything correctly
10:53when it comes to the steps
10:54and the procedures
10:55of applying NHLU's products.
10:58Alexander,
10:58who has come
10:59all the way from Europe.
11:00I am a distributor.
11:02Distributor.
11:03Yes.
11:03Wow.
11:03For all Europe countries
11:04and have been working
11:06with NHL
11:07for more than five years.
11:09So how many dealers
11:10do you actually have under you?
11:11At the moment,
11:13we have approximately
11:14more than 10 dealers
11:16and we have partners,
11:18partner service.
11:19And like garages,
11:20they do additional service.
11:24Yep.
11:24Regular maintenance and service
11:25and then they add this service
11:26to their lineup.
11:28Always in the back of my mind,
11:29I always wanted to have
11:29my own business.
11:30At the end of the day,
11:31I don't like being helpless.
11:32So, you know,
11:33the more I can learn,
11:34the better.
11:34Cool.
11:35So do you guys plan
11:35on doing this for long term?
11:37We're the first ones in Canada
11:38and we're not going
11:39to be the last.
11:40Well, there you go, guys.
11:40Father and Son team
11:41doing undercoating
11:42and restorations for people.
11:44You guys can get into it as well.
11:45This is a father and son team.
11:47They're not only going to help
11:47protect the investments of others,
11:49but they're going to make money
11:50while they're doing it.
11:51Welcome back
11:51to more Sam's Garage
11:53presented by NHOU.
11:55At Southfield Classics,
12:08the sparks are literal.
12:10Noah and Jesus show
12:11how modern modules,
12:13can bus brains,
12:14and old school craftsmanship
12:15come together
12:16to make electric builds run
12:17like classic hot rods,
12:19just quieter.
12:21This week at Southfield Classics,
12:23we're going to show you guys
12:23that putting a cab
12:25on a frame
12:25on one of these
12:26high-voltage SC31T's
12:28is no different
12:29than any other hot rod, right?
12:30Absolutely.
12:31It takes a little bit of time,
12:32a little bit of patience.
12:33You've got to maneuver it carefully
12:34not to scratch the paint.
12:36Of course, the paint
12:36and the powder coat on it.
12:37So you've got to go
12:38kind of slow and easy.
12:39Take your time
12:40and get it on there, right?
12:41Yep.
12:41You've got four points
12:43on the frame
12:44that are actually welded
12:44and those are the original
12:45body mounts
12:46that would be
12:47on the original frame.
12:48Correct.
12:48So we did our own
12:49designed rear body mount
12:51for the cab of these trucks
12:52that we've used
12:53that we've welded on
12:53to give it more
12:54of a rigid mount
12:55with a rubber gasket
12:57in between.
12:58The front is actually
12:59the stock style mount.
13:00Okay, so it actually
13:01sits on,
13:01there's no bushing
13:02in the middle
13:02that can deteriorate
13:03in the future.
13:04No, it's basically
13:05just squaring it up
13:06between those four points.
13:07There you go.
13:08That's pretty cool.
13:08So now that the cab
13:24is on the frame,
13:25Noen is going to go ahead
13:26and put four bolts in
13:27so nothing moves
13:28and then him and Jesus
13:29are going to go ahead
13:30and put all the modules
13:31in the cam bus,
13:31the brains,
13:32the inverter,
13:33everything we need
13:34to make this thing run.
13:35So basically,
13:35we need the base
13:36so we can start adding
13:37all the components
13:37to run the high voltage
13:38portion of it.
13:39They're going to go in there
13:40and add all the components
13:41to the back
13:42and then run all the wiring
13:43to get everything going on it.
13:47So what you guys
13:47are going to do,
13:48basically,
13:48we got all the modules
13:49here, the inverter,
13:50everything it takes
13:51to run the low
13:52and the high
13:53because the low
13:53is the cam bus
13:54and the high
13:54does all the work.
13:55Noen and Jesus
13:56are going to go ahead
13:57and mock up their modules,
13:58make sure everything
13:59was exactly like it was
14:00before they did the paint job.
14:02Then if they're cool with it,
14:03next week,
14:03we're going to go ahead
14:04and put in the wiring.
14:05So what do we got
14:05going in first?
14:06So what we got
14:07going in first
14:07are the passenger side panel,
14:09driver side panel.
14:10And here,
14:11it looks like you got
14:12can bus,
14:12low voltage stuff.
14:13Is that correct?
14:14That is correct.
14:15So a lot of this
14:16is pretty much relays
14:18and fuses
14:19and everything in this.
14:20This is what they call
14:21the PDU,
14:22the power distribution unit.
14:23And this pretty much
14:24has a can system
14:25from which it talks
14:26to the ECU
14:27and the ECU
14:27tells it,
14:28obviously,
14:29you know,
14:30circulate voltage
14:30in between
14:31and read signals
14:32and all that other stuff.
14:32That actually is what
14:33sends electrical current
14:35to all these little tiny ones
14:36to actually wake up,
14:37right,
14:37to get the system running.
14:39And then we obviously
14:39have the little fuse links
14:40and then we have
14:42the main relay
14:42that actually switches on
14:43some of this power
14:44when you turn on the key.
14:46And these relays,
14:46they're not automotive relays
14:47or are they mixed between
14:48automotive and household relays?
14:50I mean,
14:50they're a new style
14:52automotive relay.
14:54They're small,
14:55micro-sized.
14:56Wow.
14:57Yeah.
14:57These are 12-volt relays?
14:58Yes, they are.
14:59Usually a 5-volt relay
15:00was small like that.
15:01Right, right, right.
15:02So these ones here
15:02are a little more compact
15:03and newer type style design,
15:05you know,
15:06that people use
15:07on some of their stuff now.
15:08And so we're able
15:09to adapt it
15:09to what they're using
15:10on this system here.
15:11It's incredible
15:12that the same current
15:13can go through something
15:14this small
15:14that used to go
15:15through something that big.
15:16Correct.
15:17So obviously,
15:17like we were discussing before
15:18about technology
15:20getting smaller.
15:21It's amazing
15:21how they could just
15:22keep advancing themselves,
15:23you know?
15:23Correct, correct.
15:24They're just reinventing
15:26the wheel
15:26and making it smaller
15:28and smaller
15:28each time they're doing it.
15:29So after we get done
15:31mounting all our components
15:32where they sit,
15:33you know,
15:33our wire harness
15:34lays in there
15:35and we get everything
15:36pretty much running
15:36in the route
15:37that it needs to go clean.
15:39It's straightforward
15:40from there.
15:43All right,
15:43Jesus,
15:44and no one
15:44got all the modules
15:45in.
15:45Looks pretty good in there.
15:46Yeah,
15:47it's looking great.
15:47Looks more like
15:48a circuit board now.
15:49Absolutely does.
15:49The business end.
15:50Yep.
15:51So what's next?
15:52So next up
15:53is going to be
15:53installing the wiring harness,
15:55getting everything laid out
15:55into the cab
15:57and start running
15:57all the wires
15:58and the rest of the components.
15:59And that's going to be

16:06Sam's Garage
16:07is presented by
16:08NH Oil Undercoating
16:10is brought to you
16:12by the following companies.
16:13Welcome back
16:38to Sam's Garage
16:39presented by NHOU.
16:43Sam Unboxes
16:55Rogos Precision Hardware
16:57lineup,
16:58host clamps
16:58that don't quit,
17:00copper anti-seize
17:00that doesn't stain
17:01your phone,
17:02and a mug that proves
17:03you've officially
17:04got your nuts.
17:07So Julie and I
17:08met Dan and his wife
17:09at the 2024 Great Race.
17:10They were not only
17:11contestants,
17:12but they brought
17:12their awesome station wagon
17:13filled with everything
17:15they carry at Rogo Fastener
17:16to be as a support vehicle
17:17for the other 130 people
17:19that were there, right?
17:20So we hooked up
17:21with him and his son Joe
17:22at Irmo, South Carolina,
17:23and I was going
17:24through Joe's van
17:25and I saw this setup.
17:26I'm like, you know what?
17:26I'm going to sneak
17:27out the back door
17:27with one of these.
17:28And here we are.
17:29So sorry, Dan.
17:29So what we got here
17:30is organization, really.
17:32We got the best fasteners
17:33made right here in the USA
17:34for over 30 years
17:35family-owned, right?
17:36And that's a big difference
17:38because family-owned
17:38means that they care.
17:39They care in the packaging,
17:40they care in the delivery,
17:41and they mostly care
17:42in the customer service.
17:43But the biggest thing,
17:44honestly, when I'm ordering
17:45something and it comes to me,
17:46it really depends
17:47on how it's boxed up.
17:48Oh my gosh.
17:49Yeah, so I have the joy
17:51of unboxing the whole palette.
17:53And I mean, literally,
17:56from the outside of the palette,
17:57the way everything is done,
17:59it's so nice and organized,
18:02professionally packaged.
18:03Everything was really well protected
18:05and separate boxes.
18:07And then you look at everything
18:08and the way it all came
18:09and it's so organized.
18:11But the quality is where
18:12it really matters.
18:13For instance, these hose clamps.
18:15I can't tell you what a bear
18:16it's been having hose clamps today
18:18just fail on me.
18:19Rogo Fastener does it different.
18:21They're old school.
18:21They're high-quality stainless steel,
18:23American-made,
18:24and they're not going to fail on you.
18:25Yeah, but on top of that,
18:27when it's made in America,
18:28you're employing Americans
18:29and that's just great
18:30for the economy and whole.
18:31We got abrasives here
18:33all the way from coarse to fine
18:34along with sanding discs
18:35in a gravity-fed compartment
18:37that'll hang on the wall,
18:38making it very easy for you
18:40to keep everything organized
18:41in one spot
18:42and to easily be able to reorder
18:43and refill the cabinet.
18:45Zip ties.
18:46You're always asking me
18:47where the zip ties are.
18:48Well, sometimes I don't even know
18:49what drawer I put them in.
18:50But zip ties we use in volume.
18:52What we got here is anti-seize, okay?
18:54But it's not the regular gray anti-seize
18:55that you wear home
18:56and your wife gets upset at you.
18:58This stuff is copper
18:59and very thick.
19:00I've already opened this thing
19:01two or three times.
19:02And you didn't get any on your clothes.
19:03I didn't get any anywhere.
19:04And you've got the cabinets themselves.
19:06Now, in the cabinets,
19:07we got an aerosol cabinet right here.
19:09And in this aerosol cabinet,
19:11we have, it comes out,
19:13there is four rows deep
19:14and there is room for others,
19:16whatever aerosol cans
19:17that you may see in their catalog.
19:18And their catalog is filled
19:19with everything you may need.
19:21Not only that,
19:21we got here at the bottom,
19:23we got four drawers up top,
19:24four drawers at the bottom.
19:25I happen to have
19:26the plastic fasteners.
19:27These are the fasteners
19:28that we've been using
19:29the last 15 years,
19:30fastening the under shields
19:31and anything plastic on a vehicle.
19:32We've got two drawers of that.
19:34We've got regular screws,
19:35chrome, tapered,
19:37all sorts of assortment screws
19:39that you would normally find
19:40in dashboard settings.
19:42And the cool thing about this cabinet
19:43is you can very easily close this up
19:45just like this,
19:47take it out of the drawer,
19:49go to your workstation
19:49and do what you need to do.
19:51So save yourself the time
19:52and money and the customer
19:53by going to Rogo,
19:55getting yourself an assortment
19:56and just using what you need.
19:57And then you'll notice,
19:59I think there was still one in there,
20:00but each drawer is,
20:02you know, is certified,
20:03packed, inspected,
20:04you know, by an employee at Rogo.
20:06And they always have specials.
20:08They got a very nice cup here.
20:09They got specials online.
20:11If right now,
20:11if you buy six, eight,
20:12and 10 millimeter nuts,
20:14three packages,
20:15you get a free cup.
20:16And that's why right here,
20:16it says,
20:17I got my nuts mugged at rogofaster.com.
20:20That's a special going on right now.
20:22Don't forget to constantly go to their website
20:23when you're ordering
20:24and always look at their specials.
20:25Absolutely.
20:26Yeah, I think what's key about Rogo
20:28is it's high quality
20:29and it's organized.
20:31And for people like you,
20:33that's exactly what you need
20:34to keep you going on the job, right?
20:35Absolutely right.
20:36And stay tuned, guys,
20:37because together,
20:38Dan and I are going to be working
20:38on his father's Suburban.
20:40We're going to be doing
20:41a lot of stuff together in 26.
20:42And we're going to be showcasing
20:43this stuff at SEMA in 2027.
20:53From rookie racers
20:54to high voltage builds
20:56and shop grade fasteners,
20:58this week proved one thing.
21:00Whether it's torque,
21:01tech,
21:01or thread pitch,
21:03the details make the drive.
21:06Catch us next time
