00:00On this episode of Hot Rod Garage.
00:01This thing got a hymn in it?
00:03Yeah, we just installed it.
00:04Oh, yeah.
00:05Why were you talking like that?
00:06I don't know, it seemed right.
00:07Arkansas, it's weird.
00:30Welcome back to Hot Rod Garage.
00:32I'm Alex Taylor, and this is Lucky Costa.
00:34Hello.
00:34How are you doing?
00:35I'm good.
00:35Hi, Alex Taylor, how are you?
00:36Hi, great.
00:37So we finally get redemption.
00:39Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.
00:39Yeah.
00:40How many cups of coffee have you had today?
00:41Enough.
00:42Help me.
00:44So we finally have our D100 back in the shop,
00:47and we're going to get redemption on it,
00:49because if you remember the last time we had it out
00:51at autocross, it did not go so well.
00:53We need redemption for sure.
00:56So we did some upgrades the last time it was in here.
00:59We did a front suspension upgrade.
01:01Yes.
01:02In the rear.
01:03Steering.
01:03Steering.
01:04Transmission.
01:05Transmission.
01:06All of that.
01:07Some floors, some pedals, some clothes.
01:08There was a lot of stuff going on there.
01:10The problem is there was a lot of stuff
01:11that we didn't address.
01:13When we lowered the truck in the back
01:16by about six or seven inches, everything seemed OK,
01:19but the pinion angle was a little off.
01:22Now, that's not what ended up killing us at the autocross,
01:25but maybe the fact that the leaf springs have not
01:28had an upgrade since the truck was probably built
01:30was a big factor of that.
01:32So when Lucky went into about turn three,
01:36we have on camera where the pinion is doing like this, up, down,
01:40up, down.
01:41So with all of that movement back and forth,
01:43it cost our driveshaft to get in a bind,
01:46and actually one of the straps or girdles
01:47or whatever you want to call it broke off,
01:49and then the driveshaft came out.
01:52Drive shaft left the chat.
01:53So we have the D100 back, and we're going for redemption
01:58and actually getting to make a full autocross pass with this.
02:00Just one lap.
02:01I'm just asking for one lap.
02:02One lap.
02:03So it's back here.
02:04And instead of just doing upgrades
02:05to address those problems that we have,
02:07we thought we might as well do some more upgrades.
02:10So what do you do when you take out all the sketch?
02:12You add more sketch.
02:13You have learned well, Grasshopper.
02:15So we're going to be doing an engine swap.
02:18We have a Gen 3 Hemi that we're going to be swapping into here,
02:21so we have a little bit more power.
02:22Nice.
02:23We are going to pair that with our American powertrain
02:25five-speed that's behind us,
02:27but we're also going to address our touchy clutch along the way.
02:30We're going to adjust that.
02:31Clutch works great, but the pedal assembly,
02:33it's the factory pedal assembly getting integrated
02:35to the American powertrain.
02:36There's some hiccups there.
02:37We can talk about that when we get it apart.
02:39And in the back, we're going to be doing a full swap back there.
02:41We're going to do a new rear end housing and third member
02:44with new axles from Quick Performance.
02:46And then we are also going to be doing a leaf spring refresh.
02:50I hope something's getting refreshed back there in leaf
02:52springs because they are sad.
02:54And then eventually we'll do the drive shaft
02:55because obviously we need that.
02:57And if you remember, we're also missing the bed of our truck bed.
03:01Well, the sides are there.
03:02Yeah.
03:03But it's like a porta potty in the middle.
03:04Correct.
03:05Right.
03:05That's a great analogy.
03:06OK.
03:07So if we have time, we're going to take the truck bed off.
03:10Lucky has a date with the sawzall back there.
03:12And then we're going to eventually put it back on, new bolts,
03:14all of that, and then replace the wood back there.
03:16So we're going to have this where it's not only a really nice driver,
03:20but also where it's going to be a pretty good performer.
03:23We're going back autocrossing with this same place to try to actually get
03:26a pass of our own that we have a time on and we can feel like a mission accomplished.
03:31So lots to do.
03:33I say we get to work, but this time let's reverse the order.
03:36Flip the script.
03:37Flip the script.
03:38Let's go right to the culprit of why the truck is back in the shop.
03:43And that's the rear end.
03:44So let's start back there, get our new rear end installed, and then work forward.
03:48OK.
03:49Start back there.
03:50Flip the script.
03:51Work our way forward.
03:52Yep.
03:53Script flipping.
04:02That's good.
04:03Bring her in.
04:08Keep going.
04:11Stop.
04:12OK.
04:13Tilt back a little.
04:15More.
04:16More.
04:17Now come forward.
04:20A little more.
04:22Slowly.
04:23Slowly.
04:24I think that's it.
04:28OK.
04:31Take her up.
04:32Going up.
04:33Oh.
04:35It doesn't look structurally sound.
04:37Everything's flexing.
04:39Oh, look.
04:40Is that...
04:41Oh, our muffler guy, who just put the exhaust on before we hit the track, attached the muffler
04:47hangers to the bed cross member.
04:49So, uh...
04:50I know what you're getting.
04:51I'll be right back.
04:52Yeah.
04:59Take her up.
05:00Yeah.
05:10So last time when we were working back here, we did a flip kit, meaning that we took the
05:15rear end and put it on top of the springs rather than under the springs.
05:18So that raised the rear end up in the truck, which would affect pinion angle once you sit
05:22it down.
05:23Now, I fully believe that that's not what broke our strap here.
05:29That's not what caused the bind.
05:31It doesn't help.
05:32But where we saw our issue was when it was doing like this and like this and like this,
05:36even if it was right, we were going to have that happen.
05:39Instead of just fixing that, we are going to go ahead and fully upgrade and go with a
05:44brand new rear end back here with a third member that's ready to do what we're going to put it
05:48through at AutoCross.
05:49So we're going to start back here by taking all of the stuff that you see, rear end, shocks,
05:54springs, take it out and then get ready to put new rear end shocks, springs back in.
06:01Run for your life.
06:19Watch your cranium.
06:20I am so going to get a headache.
06:21Watch out.
06:22Stop.
06:23You're going to crash.
06:24Okay, I got it.
06:25You go.
06:26Okay.
06:27Ready?
06:28Yep.
06:29Going in.
06:30There's a little square forward or back?
06:31Forward.
06:32Okay.
06:33This is our opinion issues before.
06:34Wrong.
06:35And when you accelerate it, it went.
06:37And then when you got off the brakes.
06:39Arrgh.
06:40But I think you should illustrate it more correctly.
06:41When you de-celled, it went like this.
06:42Way down.
06:43Yeah.
06:44Yeah.
06:45So the goal here right now is to get our opinion angle set using our, one of our favorite
07:02tools here, our digital angle finder, digital level.
07:05We're going to put it here.
07:06We're going to do some math, figure it out, get a visual.
07:10Ideally, I believe this is from the Book of Burger, Book of Freiburger.
07:17Mm-hmm.
07:18With a leaf spring, you want potentially five degrees down at rest so that when you accelerate,
07:25it comes up to one or two degrees.
07:27But then you look it up on the internet.
07:28Oh, don't go down that rabbit hole.
07:29I mean, you end up anywhere from two to seven.
07:31So I was like, you know what?
07:32I text my dad.
07:33It seems like if you do somewhere at negative two to negative three, it's going to be better
07:36for just daily driving around.
07:37Right.
07:38Negative three is the number.
07:39Okay.
07:40Sold.
07:41Wait.
07:42This is a perfect opportunity to say it.
07:43Go ahead.
07:44It's just like your opinion, man.
07:46We're done.
07:50Okay.
07:51So we could take some angle out of it.
07:54Nice.
07:55Okay.
07:56What is it?
07:57390.
08:003270.
08:02290.
08:03Give it a little more.
08:05Okay.
08:06So 3.0.
08:07Yep.
08:08Now that we have pinion angle set and we have Lucky got this centered side to side.
08:14That way it's centered in the truck.
08:17We're going to get to tack it up.
08:19So we're going to tack these perches to these tubes, then weld it in place.
08:23And then we're sending this off to be powder coated.
08:25It'll come back nice and shiny.
08:28Pink.
08:29Bright pink with flames.
08:30We're not supposed to tell them that.
08:31It's a surprise.
08:32It's a surprise.
08:33But after this, once we're done welding, I think we can move to the front and start.
08:37That's going to be so much fun.
08:38Looking at pulling an engine.
08:39What do you think of taupe?
08:52So this 1966 D100.
08:54Yes.
08:55Shaping up.
08:56Actually, it's losing shape as we speak.
08:59It is.
09:00So if you guys know Lucky, you know Lucky loves to take anything that comes off of a vehicle,
09:05off the vehicle.
09:06Oh yeah.
09:07Like everybody, that's how I was raised.
09:09Take it apart, figure out how to put it back together later.
09:10But the only way I like it is if we're doing it with intention, you know?
09:15Right.
09:16That means I just have to make up something smooth to say about taking the front clip off the car.
09:20Other than I'm lazy and don't want to bend over the fender for a week.
09:23Actually, we made a compromise.
09:25So we are going to be pulling this 318 poly out of here so that way we can put our new Gen 3 Hemi in.
09:31And so Lucky was saying, hey, if we take the front clip off, then we don't have to bend over and work on it.
09:35And we have to fabricate motor mounts and all of that.
09:38And then I was like, that's a lot of work for the days that we don't have.
09:41But then I was like, I have an idea.
09:43Here's, I'll make you a deal.
09:44Let's do that if, while this is off, we can power wash it, paint the engine bay, clean the firewall up, and paint.
09:50So then you win, I win, it wins, we all win.
09:54I'm a winner.
09:55I'm a winner.
09:56Winner.
09:57I am a winner.
09:59Going in.
10:01Hook me up, Alex Taylor.
10:05Okay, up, up, and away.
10:07There's just not enough screaming in an engine pull.
10:24All right.
10:26Everything about this was totally uneventful.
10:28Oh, uh, big old mess.
10:34Uh-oh, gear oil.
10:35Yeah.
10:36Transfluid.
10:37Oh, yeah.
10:38Uh-huh.
10:39Wow.
10:40Technically, transmission needed oil change anyway.
10:43We did put seven miles on it.
10:45Coming forward.
10:46Want to put it right in the middle of it there?
10:48Alex, you want to lift, let it down, or lift it, one or the other?
10:49I can lift it.
10:50Okay, so this motor originally came from Engine Masters.
11:07It's a high-mileage truck motor, 5.7-liter, dynoed in at 498 horsepower at the crankshaft.
11:13That's pretty amazing for a truck motor.
11:16So why did we take out that 318 poly and decide to put in 498 horsepower?
11:21Well, because it was a 318 poly.
11:23Are you kidding me?
11:24This is Hot Rod Garage.
11:26So I got leaf springs painted while our housing was sent off to powder coating.
11:29They powder coated it in three hours.
11:31That's a really good turnaround.
11:32It's nice, glossy black.
11:34This, I just sprayed it with a spray can, but it's not going to rust.
11:38So I'm putting these back in.
11:39We've got fresh, new hardware.
11:41Get that all in, tighten it up, and then it's time to put the housing in for the final time.
11:45Put new U-bolt, all that.
11:46And then we can actually put the third member in and move on to something else.
11:51So I trail fitted the third member.
11:53It fits.
11:54It's good.
11:55So I'm doing the final fit right now.
11:56I've got sealer on it, ready to slide this in.
11:58We ended up going with a 370 year.
12:00You remember the whole rear situation was our problem when we took it autocrossing last time.
12:06We didn't break the rear end yet on the last one, but with all the pinion angle movement, the leaf spring movement, all of that, it put our drive shaft in a bind and kicked it right out the side of the truck.
12:18So we could have just potentially upgraded the leaf springs.
12:21However, since we're already back here, we might as well put a nice nine inch from Quick Performance in with a different third member.
12:29So now we go in.
12:31So we reached out the hooker and we got a swap kit set of mounts specifically for this motor, which is great, but it's designed to go into a truck that is 1972 through 1993.
12:43This is a generation prior.
12:45This is a 66.
12:46I think it's pretty close.
12:48What could go wrong here, right?
12:50So flywheel is installed.
12:53Pilot bushing is installed.
12:55Bell housing is put on.
12:56Check the adjustment of the hydraulic throttle bearing.
12:58Everything is measured out.
12:59It's ready to go.
13:02Moving in.
13:03American powertrain going directly over to 498 ground pounding horsepower.
13:11It's a little bit of a put an eggshell back together deal.
13:15And I'm going to just work it in there very delicately.
13:26Did you see that?
13:28Oh, funny meeting you here.
13:31Hi, Alex Taylor.
13:32Hello.
13:33How's it going back there?
13:34Oh, pretty good, you know.
13:35How are you doing up here?
13:36I'm doing well up here.
13:37As you can see, I started out with a bunch of pieces and now I have one.
13:41So the question remains, will it fit or will it take some cutting?
13:45It's all suspect.
13:46Suspect.
13:47All right, this is our D100 truck that we took out to autocross just a couple of weeks ago.
13:56And we didn't even get to make a full pass because we had some pinion angle, leaf spring issues, and we kicked the drive shaft out.
14:02So we did as anyone would.
14:04We brought it back to the shop so we could fix the drive shaft.
14:07But then in addition to that, we upgraded the leaf springs.
14:10We upgraded the rear end to a nine inch.
14:12We have done all kinds of cleanup and good work.
14:14And then, of course, as one does, you engine swap it.
14:17So we have removed our 318 poly that was right here.
14:20And we have a Gen 3 Hemi right there.
14:23Hey, Lucky, just land the plane right here.
14:26Come in.
14:27Yep.
14:28Uh-huh.
14:29Straight.
14:30Okay.
14:31Yep.
14:32Bring it on in.
14:33Uh-huh.
14:34I don't know if this is going to fit.
14:35Drop it.
14:36No.
14:37Have you checked this out?
14:39Make sure it's going to work?
14:40I have not.
14:41This is the absolute guaranteed first time going down.
14:45Wow.
14:46Something caught.
14:47I'm going to go down.
14:48It's going to get really close to the crossmember on the oil pan.
14:50Okay.
14:51In.
14:52Because it's sitting on the crossmember.
14:53You might have to raise up, and I'll go.
14:55Okay.
14:56Maybe floor jack under the, uh.
14:57Yeah, it's going to have to.
14:58I don't have that.
14:59Man.
15:00So it's a total roll of the dice.
15:02The motor mounts say they go.
15:03They fit a later model truck.
15:05It's looking like there's not a big difference between a later model
15:08and an early one like this.
15:10It could.
15:11This could work.
15:15It worked.
15:16It went behind.
15:17These motor mounts under no circumstances will ever work for this application.
15:24One of the biggest interference issues is the oil pan on the crossmember.
15:28This is a high clearance oil pan.
15:30We're not going to get much more space than that.
15:32So we're going to have to figure out a way to mount the motor in here in a position
15:35that allows the oil pan to not interfere with the crossmember.
15:38I would ideally like to lower the front of the motor so that I don't have to make anything too crazy to put the motor mounts in between the frame and the aftermarket motor mount or the swap motor mount.
15:50In addition to all that, this tube, it's got to go.
15:54Steering shaft needs to go through here, from here, directly through the header to a universal on the rack.
16:01If I cut this header and rotate it over like that, that will give me a nice opening to allow that steering shaft to go right to the rack and still be able to put the starter motor in and out.
16:12That's called thinking ahead.
16:14I made all that up, but it's going to work.
16:16Trust me.
16:17It's not in a garage.
16:18What could go wrong?
16:20Starting on brakes in the back.
16:21So we are upgrading to our Wilwood disc brakes.
16:24Something that's actually pretty cool about this set that we're actually going with is this kind of looks like a drum brake here, right?
16:29Well, it's a similar function, but this is actually your emergency and parking brake.
16:33Since we have a manual transmission, this is a really nice benefit because that way you don't have to leave it in gear
16:41or you don't have to get out of your truck with it still running and have it in neutral and worry about it rolling away.
16:46You guys know what a parking brake emergency brake is for, but a lot of times when you upgrade to disc brakes,
16:52this isn't something that just comes with your standard kit.
16:55Now, this is a little bit more expensive kit, but I feel like it's worth it.
16:58So I've actually never installed one of these before, but the way this works, this looks like a little miniature drum brake,
17:04and it goes right here.
17:06This goes on the inside of your rotor for your disc brake.
17:10So you just adjust this out just like you would a regular drum brake,
17:15and then you have your brake cables that run to your standard OEM lever,
17:20or if you didn't have that before, you can install that.
17:23So it's just kind of a nice little upgrade, a little benefit to this Wilwood kit.
17:28So before, we just had stock stuff back here, stock rear end.
17:32We had stock brakes, which were drum brakes, not disc brakes.
17:37So this is a totally different setup than what we had.
17:40So I went in the back and I found some metal, it's an approximately quarter inch plate, good metal, gonna make some adapter plates.
18:04So what we're trying to do is use the hooker swap motor mount plates on the motor,
18:10and use the stock motor mount brackets that are already attached to the frame.
18:14And with all the measurements done, this is the adapter plate that we whipped up.
18:19Quarter inch plate we had in the back, got to use the plasma cutter, one of my favorite tools.
18:23My eyes are still burning.
18:26And now I'm gonna see if it goes in.
18:41Okay, so motor mounts are installed.
18:42Believe it or not, the motor is actually installed for the very last time Transcross member is installed, bolted up.
18:47Motor plates have been modified and installed.
18:49There's plenty of clearance for everything.
18:51It looks great.
18:52Speaking of looking great, does this look normal to you?
18:55It looks a little off to me.
18:57We still got some wiring to do.
18:58I believe the pedals on the inside are supposed to be hooked to something.
19:01And something in the back is supposed to hold gas.
19:03We still got quite a bit of work to do.
19:05Once again, does this look normal to you?
19:08I don't think it is.
19:10Okay, so one of the issues we had in the past with this truck was we used the stock clutch master cylinder with a factory hydraulic clutch system.
19:28Assuming it would work the hydraulic thrower bearing.
19:30Note, it does not.
19:32It moves just way too much material.
19:34It was blowing the O-ring out.
19:35The thing was leaking.
19:36So we've gone ahead and gotten a hydraulic master cylinder specifically designed for a hydraulic thrower bearing.
19:43We have to make a little plate.
19:45We need to punch a hole in the middle in a couple of small spots and make it so it bolts right to the firewall.
19:49It will look clean and factory hot rod garage.
19:53Okay, plate is whipped up.
19:55Dilled another hole.
19:56I mounted the hydraulic Wilwood master cylinder right there.
19:59This is a three-quarter inch small volume.
20:02Just a mount.
20:03I mean, it's not like a giant brake master cylinder.
20:05It's just there to do one job.
20:07And that's move a thrower bearing like 500 thousandths.
20:12And I enlarged the holes on the firewall just a little bit.
20:19We're done.
20:26Okay, it's time to put our gas pedal in our D100 truck.
20:30So this already had a gas pedal.
20:32But what we're doing with our Terminator X-Maxx from Holley is we're going to be using the drive-by wire feature.
20:37So with drive-by wire, you are actually using electronics to say,
20:42Hey, gas pedal, I'm pushing you.
20:45Throttle body, I want you to open.
20:47This is not physically pulling a cable and opening the throttle body.
20:51But instead, it's seeing voltage in the potentiometer that's in here and the electronics that's inside this gas pedal.
20:57It's sending information over to the ECU.
20:59The ECU is sending information to the throttle body and they're all communicating together.
21:04Some of the advantages are you're going to have a little bit more throttle control.
21:07Your computer has a little bit more information.
21:09There's just some different settings you can use.
21:11So we have a pedal that Holley supplied for this application, which matches our throttle body, which is a stock Chrysler throttle body.
21:19What I'm doing right now is where our stock pedal came through.
21:25It had a large hole in the firewall.
21:27Where this pedal needs to mount is basically right at that hole, almost perfectly.
21:33So I just made a nice little circular patch panel, getting ready to weld it in place.
21:39And then I can actually go ahead and move forward with mounting this.
21:42And then we run some wires and be good to go.
21:45So I'm taking a break from a little cutting and a grinding and a grinding and a cutting to harnessing the power.
21:53Putting the Holley fuel injection harness in right now.
21:55We have an injection harness and a coil harness.
21:58I think there's an additional sensor harness.
22:01It's a hemi.
22:02It's new to me.
22:03I wonder if it's new to you.
22:04But I do know that it is going in and I have the right harness here now.
22:09So last night I got the radiator mounted, or I should say mounted.
22:15It's in there.
22:16It's hanging.
22:17But we're waiting to get the front clip up on the truck.
22:19That way we can actually make sure the radiator is in the correct position and make adjustments to raise it or lower it, depending on where everything falls.
22:26So once we get the front capped back off, you guys remember that really rusty, crusty truck bed?
22:33I'm really excited for that.
22:35We have a whole new Bedwood kit that we're going to be installing.
22:38I've got to stain it.
22:39It's my wood crafting project that I'm really excited about.
22:43So we've got to cap the front, cap the back, and see if all of the stuff that we've put under the hood fits in between these two fenders.
22:52We'll see.
22:56Hey, so the coolest part about taking all the body panels off, it makes it so easy to work on.
22:59And my bed still doesn't hurt.
23:01Oh, I'm glad.
23:02That's great.
23:03Oh, they're back.
23:04Oh.
23:05Hey.
23:06So if you missed it, this is our D100 that we are trying to get to autocross for the redemption that it deserves.
23:14Because the last time we were out, it didn't even get a full autocross lap.
23:17Turn three, we made it to turn three.
23:19This time, all the way to turn four.
23:21So our plan is, is not only are we going to go back to autocross and get, like, basic redemption, we're just going to annihilate every bit of sadness that it had.
23:32Yes.
23:33Are you calling the tires sadness because we're going to annihilate them?
23:36Yeah, that too.
23:37So we did a lot of disassembly, which means we have a lot of reassembly.
23:42So we need to get our front clip up here because a lot of the stuff that we're kind of still waiting to finish, we need to see how that's going to be positioned so we can wrap those projects up.
23:51Oh, that's right.
23:52We put a whole new motor, the Hemi here, and a new radiator.
23:56Have you, did we measure this?
23:57No.
23:58Because they say measure once, cuss twice.
24:01We could be cussing in just a second or we could be celebrating.
24:05Ready?
24:06Bring it in.
24:10Take her up.
24:11Up.
24:12Stop.
24:13Up.
24:14Up.
24:15Up.
24:16Up.
24:17Up with it.
24:18You got it.
24:19Keep going.
24:20More height.
24:21Keep going.
24:23What do you think this does?
24:25Don't.
24:26Oh.
24:27It'll be okay.
24:28Don't need that.
24:29I think that'll be good right there.
24:31I think that's probably about good.
24:34Bring her in.
24:36Fender's out.
24:40Okay, slow her down.
24:41More now.
24:42Hang on, we got a few wine in the way.
24:44Who put that there?
24:46Okay, so now the deal, we have to pull this out because it kind of closes the gap.
24:50So pull the whole thing towards you.
24:52And slowly go down with that little lever right there.
24:56Slowly.
25:05Okay, I'm under the edge.
25:07I am not.
25:09Keep going down.
25:10Just a little bit.
25:12Stop.
25:13Pull your fingers out of there.
25:14Okay.
25:15All right.
25:18What?
25:19Whoa.
25:20That was weird.
25:21What?
25:23Huh.
25:24Wow.
25:25It actually looks like it belongs there.
25:27Am I lying?
25:28Who did the arithmetic here?
25:29It was an accident.
25:30I mean, we did it.
25:31Okay.
25:32I'm cool with it.
25:33So something that I really wanted to do, just actual project I'm excited about, is I want
25:40to do the bed wood in our truck bed.
25:43So we got a bed wood kit here.
25:46It's already pre-cut, pre-slotted.
25:48I stayed late last night to prep it, just because we just don't have a ton of time.
25:53So I got two coats of oil stain on the backside.
25:56I also got the bed right back here.
25:59I cut all of the slats, all of the old rusted hardware that didn't want to budge.
26:03Cut all that out last night.
26:05So for the most part, it's prepped.
26:07So I'm going to get this last coat on.
26:09And then we just let it dry.
26:12And then we work later.
26:17So moving back, I'm going to start pulling parts off the side of the frame.
26:21We don't need all these extra hangers.
26:23I think there used to be a trailer hitch or something on the back of this thing.
26:26We don't need that anymore.
26:27There are some muffler hangers and old e-brake apparatus up in the front.
26:30All that could potentially cause a problem in the future as we're throwing more parts at this thing.
26:34Speaking of throwing parts, there is no gas tank back here.
26:38Factory gas tank was located behind the seat.
26:41I don't really care for that.
26:43You get to smell it, potentially get to wear it if you're in an accident.
26:47We've already pulled that tank out.
26:49In addition to that, we grabbed an aluminum tank from Classic Performance.
26:52And it's a tank that fits 63 through 73 C10s.
26:55It's a little bit narrow, but it's good for front to back clearance and height clearance.
27:00And I think this thing's going to be super low, so height matters.
27:05Awesome.
27:06Okay, so it looks like we're very close to being done.
27:10The D100 has a Hemi in it.
27:12Yes.
27:13American Powertrain 5-speed.
27:14Correct.
27:15Not just a new third member from Quick Performance, but a complete new differential, including disc brakes in the back.
27:21And we got all the new leaf springs, which if you remember, that was the culprit of our problems.
27:25We only have a few things left to do, a little bit of plumbing for the back.
27:29A couple wires to connect, a couple hoses, and of course, obviously, we've got to put the bed wood in the bed.
27:35But we're waiting on this to dry.
27:38And I would say, it's going to be a real autocross machine now.
27:41Absolutely.
27:42We went from farm fresh to hot mess.
27:44Express.
27:45Because we're going to be fast.
27:46Hot mess express.
27:47Hot mess express.
27:48I like.
27:49Lucky like.
27:50Lucky like.
27:51Alex liked to finish this.
27:52Oh, really?
27:53Yeah, let's go.
27:54All right.
27:55Yeah.
27:56OK.
28:06All right, so we are back for redemption, and we have come with a vengeance.
28:10We're back at the exact same track that we were at.
28:12The whole race course has all been laid out last time we were here.
28:16We had a stellar three turns before the truck failed.
28:20Yeah, so if you don't remember, our Dodge D100, we had it out not that long ago at a really great autocross event.
28:26Lucky went into turn three after a little bit of concern that he might not even make it off the line,
28:32because our clutch was not acting right.
28:33There was a lot of iffy stuff going on.
28:35But he made it off the line, went into turn three, and then spit the drive shaft right off the side of the truck,
28:40and then he, Lucky, coasted right into the pit.
28:42We didn't even get a time on it.
28:43I see what you did there.
28:44I know.
28:46I will say, in my defense, those first two turns were stellar.
28:48I can say they were really good.
28:50Yeah.
28:51But since this fought us and gave us trouble, we thought that we wouldn't just fix what broke.
28:55We would upgrade and then fix anything else that might be a potential issue.
28:59Anything that insinuated it was going to give us trouble the next time we got to the track, we put it to bed.
29:05We started out in the back.
29:06We upgraded the rear end to a quick performance, 9-inch.
29:09We did new leaf springs, because that was also a major culprit of issue.
29:12Yeah, yeah.
29:13Full exhaust all the way to the back, because we had to figure out some way to get the horsepower from the, say it.
29:21Hemi.
29:22Hemi-powered.
29:23Yeah.
29:24V8 up in the front, complete fuel injected, Holley engine management, and that all feeds the American powertrain transmission.
29:30It was there last time we were here.
29:31It worked just fine.
29:32So we have something that I would say is a qualified race vehicle.
29:36And obviously today we're going to be flying right through that course and right through the cone, so we should probably go do a course walk.
29:42We're going to take the California Coastal Carver out on the track later after we walk it.
29:46I like that name.
29:47You like that?
29:48I do. Let's go.
29:49It's actually a sandwich I had the other day.
29:50That is not.
29:51Delicious.
29:52Doesn't sound good.
29:53Okay, so this thing is sounding great.
29:56Way better.
29:57It feels driving nice.
29:58I will say this thing, as soon as we first tuned it, the throttle was sort of like jumpy.
30:03And I realized, because the seat's sort of sketchy, that it was like me bouncing on the gas pedal and I accelerated and stuff.
30:09Oh, you were the problem.
30:10Yeah.
30:11So I do recall the start line was right around here.
30:14And we're just going to drive it right now, look for debris on the track.
30:18I just don't feel like walking.
30:19Okay.
30:20We could have walked.
30:21We're slow driving right now.
30:22Yeah, we're just slow driving it.
30:23Hey, what happened?
30:27Apparently this thing just wants to race.
30:29Apparently.
30:30Yeah, yeah.
30:31Okay, so, so far it's looking similar.
30:33Yeah.
30:34Yeah, and I do remember this because it looks weird, the way the cones are all.
30:37Yeah.
30:38But you go past this, what looks like clearly an intersection.
30:41Yep.
30:42You turn to the right.
30:43Man, this seat is bouncy.
30:44Yeah, it's just, it's going to be fun to bounce around in it.
30:48Okay.
30:49Now this is neat because you have a little, it goes that way.
30:52Yep.
30:53So you got to kick the back in over this and it gets real light.
30:55Yep, okay.
30:56Okay.
30:57And she comes around.
30:58Very nice.
30:59And then as I recall, aim for the pole.
31:04Take a loosey.
31:05Apex to the left.
31:07Very nice.
31:09And then you can start getting some speed right here.
31:11Yeah, we got our straightaway back here.
31:13And you think you want to get close right there, but you don't.
31:15You want to go out here.
31:16Because you got to swing back.
31:17Because then you got a big, long sweeper.
31:20And it's a little bit of a slalom.
31:23This way.
31:24Yep.
31:25And then this way.
31:26And you think you want to apex out.
31:27You don't.
31:28You stay wide and you move the apex deeper into the turn.
31:32There we go.
31:34Very nice.
31:35You go wide here and then just dive to the outside here and apex in.
31:40And this is all the way back this way.
31:42This is, this got me a couple of times.
31:44It's confusing.
31:45Yeah.
31:46Okay, very nice.
31:47Cool.
31:48I feel pretty good about that.
31:49I think that's pretty good.
31:50Plus, we don't have to wait in line to make multiple passes.
31:52True.
31:53I also feel good that that's really close to how it was.
31:55Yeah, it does seem very familiar.
31:57Very nice.
31:58All right, I think it's only fair that you go first and you get your redemption.
32:03I insist upon going first and getting, is that okay?
32:06That sounds great.
32:07I'm getting my redemption.
32:08Okay.
32:09Have fun.
32:15All right, so I saw Lucky drive it from over there to the starting line and I can say
32:22there's a chance that with his driving, I may not be driving again today.
32:25So anyways, he's getting ready to launch the truck.
32:28He didn't look too happy with his drive over, so we're going to see how it's going to do.
32:31But if we don't send him soon, he's going to get cranky.
32:34So with that said, Lucky, hit it.
32:37All right, so sitting on the line, something sounds very clacky, clanky.
32:42I don't know what it is, but it took off okay.
32:44So it'll be okay.
32:46It'll be fine.
32:53No, it's not fine.
32:55Is it fine?
32:57We're coming up to the scene of the accident real soon.
33:00Like right here.
33:01He is on turn three and he is not moving again.
33:06How is this even possible?
33:08Lucky coasted right into our pit again.
33:11All right, it looks like he made it to turn three once again and he's coasting in.
33:16Oh, I hear it.
33:17We may not be getting redemption.
33:19What did you do?
33:24So in case you missed it, Lucky broke it.
33:26All right.
33:27I wasn't actually going to say it.
33:28Okay.
33:29We came for redemption and we're getting our booties kicked.
33:33Derrieres are in the air for sure.
33:35That's a fact.
33:36Now, this isn't one of those where we're like, we just showed up.
33:39We haven't even driven this car.
33:40That's the thing.
33:41This one was actually tested, tuned, proven, dynoed, all of that.
33:45And then out here, it's just failing in real life.
33:48And then it would run great.
33:49And then I'm waiting for cameras and everybody to get in place.
33:52It has to run for five or ten minutes waiting for people like directors and camera guys to get in place.
33:57And then all of a sudden ready to go.
33:5910 feet out of the gate.
34:01Let it cool down.
34:03Start again.
34:04Starts up.
34:05Okay, I think we fixed it.
34:06Anyway, so there are some LED lights on a Terminator X Max, which indicate different statuses of systems within the ECU.
34:15The one that kept showing up red was for a crank sensor.
34:19So turning it off and back on again doesn't work, but we pulled it back over here.
34:23We checked the sensor earlier.
34:24While there's no visible physical damage, that doesn't mean that internally there is not something failing.
34:29So we had to go to a Chrysler dealership in Huntington.
34:33Beautiful.
34:34Huntington Beach, California.
34:35Correct.
34:36Because our local auto parts store didn't have it.
34:38Anyways, with all of that said.
34:40Yeah, get to the punchline.
34:41We have the sensor.
34:42We're going to try it.
34:43And you know what?
34:44It still may not work.
34:45Okay, we didn't make it worse.
34:48There is no issue on that light right now.
34:51All green.
34:52All green.
34:53All green.
34:54Okay, based on the LEDs on the Terminator X Max, we have all green lights currently.
34:59So, I say we take them out, line them up, and we see if it's going to disappoint us once again or if it's actually going to work.
35:08You ready?
35:09I am.
35:10Okay.
35:11Don't break it.
35:12No promises.
35:22No.
35:23No.
35:24No.
35:25No.
35:26No.
35:27Rude.
35:28Rude truck.
35:29Not nice.
35:30As soon as you went out, car truck started acting up.
35:31Comes back over.
35:32Red light on the crank sensor is bad.
35:33So, or it's red, meaning that there's an error.
35:34So, we're going to have to do some diagnosing.
35:37And if not, promise there'll still be a really interesting event.
35:38Don't you worry.
35:39So, apparently and clearly whenever you have an automotive issue, a performance issue with a car, it's CSI.
35:52We are trained professionals, trained professionals, at automotive CSI.
36:08So, we were thrown off a little bit because on a Terminator X Max, which is not on all Hawley ECUs, like your Dominator and your HP, but the Terminator X and X Max have a little bit of investment.
36:21and X-Maxx have indicator lights,
36:23which we keep talking about,
36:24which tells you which system is having issues.
36:27A very specific ECU, which is really user-friendly.
36:31It showed, it kept showing the crank sensor
36:32was having an issue, which we replaced.
36:36Right.
36:36Because it made sense, what we were seeing was cranked.
36:38But then all of a sudden, this last go around,
36:40we started seeing another Diag popping up
36:43that it was cam sensor having issues.
36:45Right, so it's sensor issues.
36:47Sensor issues, but like.
36:49And technically it was correct.
36:50Now what did you find?
36:51The problem was a zip tie that was misplaced
36:54and a five volt reference wire touching a pipe
36:57that only would get through the plastic insulation
37:00at 190 degrees.
37:02So it would get on there, connection would mess it up.
37:05It's sending all kinds of weird information to the ECU.
37:06And it's not that it was doing it to safeguard it.
37:08Like the ECU wasn't doing that.
37:10It doesn't know that that's an issue.
37:12It was just reacting to information.
37:13It was just getting information
37:15so those sensors were going whack.
37:16So anyways, with that said, long story short,
37:19we fully believe that we can go make a lap now.
37:21All right.
37:22Your lap time right now is like four hours, so.
37:23I appreciate that.
37:24You're welcome.
37:25It's a lot of driving.
37:26Don't slam my door.
37:29All right.
37:30So Lucky has been driving like a real ticked off teenage boy.
37:33By that I mean he's been acting a real fool.
37:36And the truck hasn't stopped working yet.
37:38So I'm going to say by all accounts, Lucky legit,
37:42he legit broke it.
37:44It may be fixed right now.
37:45It looks fixed.
37:46It appears fixed.
37:47But what's not fixed is his lap time,
37:49because the clock is still running.
37:51And right now, it's at three and a half hours.
37:53So Lucky, hit it.
37:55I think that gave me the OK.
37:59All right.
38:00If we can just get to turn three, we're doing real good.
38:03So I'm going to just drive kind of mellow.
38:09That's where we lost him last time.
38:12All right.
38:13Victory.
38:15We're past three.
38:15OK.
38:16We've already gone further than we've ever gone before.
38:19One cone down.
38:21I forget about that one cone.
38:23This is the little slalom run.
38:31Two cones, three cones.
38:33I don't like those cones anyway.
38:34Another cone.
38:35These cones talk a lot of trouble.
38:37Another cone.
38:38He's up.
38:38Three cones.
38:41Oh, Lucky go.
38:43Hey, we just finished the lap.
38:57So the tricky part about autocross is sometimes your first time
39:01is the best time for a while.
39:03Because once you get later in the laps,
39:04you start overthinking it.
39:06You think about it too much.
39:08And then you start to slow down, which
39:09is maybe what's happening right now.
39:11He's either broke or he's wanting to go again
39:14because his time was slow.
39:17I missed the shift.
39:20My bad.
39:24Wow.
39:24I was like, what's he doing?
39:26It was looking good.
39:26Yeah, yeah.
39:27And then you come back with the shifter in hand.
39:29Yeah, well.
39:30You know what?
39:30I have to say it.
39:32Lucky broke it?
39:33Lucky legit broke it.
39:34You know, in my defense, the seat's not bolted in.
39:38Oh, so you're telling me what had happened
39:39was the seat was sliding around,
39:41so you just ripped the shifter out of the floor?
39:43You know, the way you put it like that
39:44makes me really seem at fault.
39:46I'm going to go out on a limb and say, you know what?
39:48People put performance seats in performance cars
39:50to keep you in place.
39:51For a reason.
39:52Because the steering wheel and the shifter
39:54are not monkey bars.
39:55This is not normal.
39:56I just don't know my own strength.
39:57These guns.
39:59Sorry.
40:00Excuse the drip.
40:01Is that what the kids are saying, though?
40:02It's not good.
40:04Don't do that.
40:05That's so no.
40:06Hey, uh, hey, let's walk over there.
40:08I think I got all the way up.
40:10First of all, you know that dip that we drove through
40:12that doesn't really belong in the middle of the track?
40:14I was trying to keep it cool on the dip,
40:16and that's when shifter bailed, and I shortcut it.
40:19I bet you the parts that were missing are sitting right there.
40:21You want to go for a walk?
40:22Let's go.
40:23We can take this dog.
40:23We could drive over there.
40:25Give me the shifter.
40:25I can put her back in gear.
40:26Nah, I'd rather walk.
40:27I don't know that I trust you right now.
40:29OK, so anyways, good news is we fixed one problem.
40:32Bad news is made another.
40:34I don't know if we can fix this one.
40:35The big problem was in the back, and we fixed that.
40:37We moved to the front, had a problem.
40:38We fixed that.
40:39And now something came apart in the middle.
40:41This has to be the last thing.
40:42How did you do that?
40:43This has to be the last thing.
40:50Yeah, OK, so today I had some wins and some losses.
40:52But I think we're done.
40:54We are absolutely done, I believe.
40:57Unless we're told to do more stuff.
40:59Nope, there's no shifter in there.
41:01I believe that the day is over.
41:03All right, so that is actually it for this episode.
41:06But don't worry, this thing is going to come back with a vengeance again.
41:08This time it will be at HRG Day in Bakersfield at Famoso.
41:12HRG Day, I'm very much looking forward to that.
41:14Me too.
41:15We do have a lot of people to thank, though, because overall, I would say that we can count
41:18this return to the scene of the accident as a win.
41:21We had a really good lap time today.
41:22By we, I mean lucky.
41:23Yeah.
41:24And made it past turn three and then got a 45 second lap time, which for reference,
41:28the other day we were seeing like 32, 35 from really, really fast cars.
41:33Yeah, actual race cars, not farm trucks.
41:34So now the culprit, the thing that brought us back here the second time, that was a
41:38big problem the last time was the rear differential.
41:40Yeah, so we need to thank Quick Performance because we swapped over to a nine inch.
41:44All of their components, it worked out really well, it was a good install, and it held up
41:49out here, and it did not cause us any grief this time.
41:51Not one iota of problems at all.
41:53In addition to that, when you replace a rear end, you, of course, Hemi swap the car.
41:57Duh.
41:58So a big thank you to Engine Masters for giving us their Gen 3 Hemi to put into this.
42:02How do we manage that thing?
42:03With Holley, of course.
42:04A big thanks to Holley for, as always, helping us with our engine management fuel injection.
42:09We also need to thank them this time because they also hooked us up with these wheels, which
42:14leads me to, we also need to thank Toyo for the tires.
42:17Also, a thank you to Willwood, brakes all the way around.
42:19How did it stop out there?
42:20It stopped on a, well, on some parts.
42:23It stopped on some parts.
42:24Right when you dropped them?
42:25But right when I asked it to stop, it stopped, yeah.
42:27That's good.
42:28Which leads me to American Powertrain, thank you guys.
42:32Lucky owes you an apology.
42:34I'll call you.
42:35I'll call you.
42:36Say sorry.
42:37My bad.
42:38I think we're done for today.
42:39Is that it?
42:40Yes.
42:41We need to leave before we break more stuff.
42:42Have you got social media?
42:43Oh, yes, I do.
42:44I am Alex Taylor Racing.
42:45Do you?
42:46That's funny you would ask.
42:47Yes, I do.
42:48I am Mobile Tech Lucky on all the platforms.
42:49And we are Hot Rod Garage Show.
42:50Yes, we are.
42:51You think I'm going to be in deep shift?
42:52Oh, you already are.
42:53Oh, man.
42:54My bad.
42:54My bad.
42:55You.
42:56You.
42:57You.
