00:00Motorhead Garage, the program that each week introduces you to and shows you how to install
00:06the latest in exciting and innovative products for your vehicle.
00:10Now here's your host, Dave Dobson.
00:16Now Custom Auto Sound, it's a company that's been around for decades and they're famous
00:20for making car stereos that look just like the original radio that came with your vintage
00:25car years ago, but has the modern technology and features that we need including Bluetooth,
00:30MP3 player, and of course connections for satellite radio, but what if you want all that new technology
00:36but you still want to keep the original radio in the dash, or maybe you're building a custom
00:40street rod like this 33 Plymouth and you just want to keep a certain clean look, maybe you
00:44don't want to see the radio at all, Custom Auto Sound has an answer for you, it's called the
00:50Secret Audio Radio. Now you don't have to compromise, you can keep your original radio and your vehicle's
00:57authentic looks, and you can stream your favorite tunes and use your cell phone hands free.
01:02The Secret Audio Radio receiver hides wherever you want to hide it, under the dash for instance,
01:06or inside the console like we see here on this custom street rod, and you can manage all of it with this
01:11little remote control. Now nothing looks better than a classic car or muscle car from the 50s or 60s,
01:17but nothing sounds worse than a car stereo from the same era. Back then you listen to your favorite
01:23music on an AM radio on a tiny speaker or two, but now Custom Auto Sound's Secret Audio Radio,
01:29it gives you dazzling sound, and you also get Bluetooth so you can drive and talk hands free.
01:34You get a USB 3 Windows Media Audio flash drive port, and there's a connection for satellite radio as
01:39well, as I mentioned. You also have the ability to control your iPod and CD players by remote, and yes,
01:45Custom Auto Sound sells a CD player that hides away too. It's small enough to fit in your glove compartment
01:50or under your seat. All of this and 200 watts of power from the Secret Audio Radio, that's 50 watts to
01:57each of the four channels out, and of course that brings us to the speakers. Just like with the
02:02radios, Custom Auto Sound gives you some choices with your speakers. You can choose a speaker that fits
02:07and looks like a period correct speaker, but it's packed with modern tech that makes it sound great,
02:13and this is nice too. There's a zero memory current draw, which means the radio will not drain the battery
02:18when the radio is not being used. Hey, if you're even a little bit handy, and you have a little
02:23patience, Custom Auto Sound makes it easy to install the Secret Audio Radio. Every Custom Auto Sound
02:28Radio comes with instructions, and every single wire and connector is both labeled and color-coded.
02:33That way, it's easy to make sure you have everything hooked up right in the first place.
02:37Our build team made quick work of the install. First, they disconnected the car battery, as you should
02:42always do when doing any electrical work on any vehicle. Then they plugged in the receiver, and they put it
02:47under the passenger seat, the perfect place for that. Then they used the color-coded wires and
02:53connectors that include the antenna, the satellite radio, and an external microphone. That microphone
02:58enables the owner of this car to use his phone via Bluetooth and drive safely hands-free, and that's
03:03required in so many states these days. Our team had already mounted the bracket for the control unit,
03:07so from there it just bolted in, and the guys fed the command cable through the housing, and once it was all
03:13plugged in, the team turned it on with the remote control, and we were in business. Now, Ron Harker Road,
03:19the owner and builder of this beauty, can have his cake and eat it too because he gets amazing sound,
03:23and he gets Bluetooth while still keeping the look he is going for with this car. Now, maybe you don't
03:28want to hide everything. Maybe you want to keep your car's authentic looks, but you still want all this
03:32modern technology you see in the Secret Audio Radio where Custom Auto Sound has you covered there too.
03:37They have radios to fit over 400 applications, so you can bet they have one that'll fit your classic car
03:43perfectly. All the same technology you get with the Secret Audio Radio, but with beautiful classic
03:48looks. And Custom Auto Sound is sneaky. You can get radios that have an analog-looking dial when the
03:53unit's turned off, but when you turn it on, you have a digital tuner that gives you a perfect signal and
03:58complete control over every aspect of your listening experience. Our Motorhead Garage crew was at a car show
04:03a couple of weeks ago. That's where we ran into Jerry Sillery. He has a Custom Auto Sound Radio in his
04:0862 Ford Ranchero, and he says he loves it. Custom Auto Sound, I like being able to do the Bluetooth
04:14features, you know, being able to play my music through my phone or any other device through the
04:20car. How does this compare to the experience you would have had in 1962 with a radio that came from
04:25the factory? In 1962, you had an AM radio, and you were stuck with whatever AM stations you could find.
04:32How important was it for you to keep the original look of the car, but still get what you wanted in a
04:35radio? Oh, that was very important. I did not want to modify the dash or cut in a square box-type
04:42radio with a single den. I wanted a custom fit to the car. That was very important to keep the car
04:49looking original in the interior. I'm kind of a big music guy, so radio is a big important part of the
04:54car. It's easy to find just what you need on Custom Auto Sound's website. Just select your vehicles
05:00make and then find the model, then up pops every single item Custom Auto Sound offers for your
05:05particular vehicle. On the off chance they don't have your model, you can also get universal radios,
05:10and don't forget the secret audio radio, of course. SEMA award-winning products from Custom Auto
05:15Sound. You can find these and a whole lot more at customautosoundmfg.com. Lots more to come on
05:21Motorhead Garage, presented by Steel Rubber Products. John and Len are on deck, ready to knock
05:26another great tech tip out of the park. Stay tuned, because we'll be right back.
05:30The first organized auto race in the United States took place in 1895. Six cars raced 54
05:38miles through the snow from Chicago to Evanston, Illinois and back. Inventor Frank Duryea won the
05:45race. What was his average speed? 7, 25, 40 or 50 miles an hour? Duryea won the race in just over 10
05:54hours at an average speed of 7 miles an hour.
06:03Motorhead Garage, presented by Steel Rubber Products, brought to you by Amsoil, the first in
06:08synthetics. Mantic Clutch USA, make it a Mantic. And by Steel Rubber Products, get your ride sealed with steel.
06:24Now this is a new brake rotor. You can see there's plenty metal on both sides. You got the
06:32ventilation in the middle. Beautiful. Don't be this guy. Not too bad. Oh man, believe it or not,
06:40look at that. Actually came in, the pad wore clean through the metal and those are the fins you're
06:45looking at right there on the inside. Welcome to this Amsoil tech tip. We're talking about brake pads
06:50and brake pad wear. What goes on? Well you can have glazing, tapered, inner pad wear. Inner pad wear,
06:57basically your slides are sticking and that inner pad's wearing. Glazing, just heat. All this is heat.
07:02Tapered wear, maybe it wasn't in the caliper right. I have some right here on the table for you. You can
07:06see this one here is all cracked and deteriorated. Heat. Heat is the biggest enemy of a brake system.
07:12These ones are worn out. This one's tapered. And then this one here, if you look at the screen one more
07:18time, this is wild. It's called overlapping friction material. How does that happen? Well,
07:22I can show it to you right here. You got this right here. Looks good. But if I pick it up,
07:26you see the pad. We're only using about 75% of the pad. Why? Well, the rotor's too small. Len,
07:33that's going to cause some massive heat. And we know heat is an enemy of a brake system. It is. And
07:38the fluid, once again, has to deal with the heat and it can't get rid of it. We've talked about the
07:43fluids as a medium to carry the heat away. In the case of brake fluid, it doesn't go anywhere.
07:48It clamps down, right? It provides the pressure. You get all that heat that's generated in the
07:52rotor and the brake pad. It all goes right into the fluid. And then you release the brakes. The
07:56fluid releases the pressure and the fluid stays there. So that fluid gets heat cycled over and
08:01over and over again. So it has to continue to take that without oxidizing. Now, what does AMSOIL build
08:06into their product to take that heat? It's once again, it's in the building blocks of the product. And
08:12you and I have discussed this before. It applies to brake fluid the same. It's the building blocks
08:16of the product that are key. So you've got very high-end base oils. Brake fluids are generally
08:21built out of group five type esters. And then the additive package on top of that to be able to
08:26deal with the heat. Certain brake fluids are thinner in viscosity than others. Our racing brake fluid is a
08:31little heavier in viscosity. So that means that it won't work quite as fast in some of the modern
08:36ABS systems. So at that point, you use our LOVIS brake fluid. That one's thinner, designed to move a lot
08:43quicker. Yeah, all brake fluids aren't created equal. And you might not even know it. You have to service
08:48your brake system. Look at your manufacturer's service manual. Brake fluids hygroscopic. It absorbs
08:53water. Once it absorbs water, the boiling point goes down. If brake fluid boils, air is compressible,
08:59liquids not, you're going to get a case called brake fade. Not a good thing. So make sure you use an AMSOIL. You can
09:04find them on the web at amsoil.com.
09:14I'm Dave Lovelace. I own a 1971 Z-28 Camaro. I'm Steve Miller, and this is my 71 Z-28 Camaro.
09:22My Camaro was made in the last week of January 1971. And mine was made a week later in 1971.
09:30I graduated from Catoosa High School in 1971. I graduated from Tulsa Hale in 1971. I was born
09:38February 13th, 1953. And I was born February 19th, 1953.
09:50There's just too many stars lined up. We're a week apart on everything.
09:54I bought his car in 1991. I bugged him for 10 years to buy the car back. When I found out he had it,
10:02I knew I was going to get it back someday. He sold it to me and he said, will you sell it back to him?
10:07And I said, no. But I know there's another one. It just all lined up. Because it's not a, every day you
10:13see two matching cars identical. And they've been well taken care of. Original numbers. We've got a lot of
10:18nice things between the two cars. But we wanted to keep them as close to original as we can. Because
10:24that's where it's all about. I've always been a purist. And I prefer to keep it that way.
10:35Motorhead Garage is presented by Steel Rubber Products. We're delighted to have them along for
10:39the ride. And we're delighted to have you along for the ride. We'll see you in a few minutes.
10:43There's a rainbow of paint colors available for cars. But in the US, 73% of all cars are painted one
10:51of four colors. Can you name them? Gray is the fourth most popular. Silver is third at 16%.
11:0019% of all cars sold in the US are black. And white tops the list at the most popular paint color in the
11:07country. You are locked into Motorhead Garage presented by Steel Rubber Products coming to you
11:14from the Mouse Blocker studio. Mouse free for years now. Thanks to our friends at Mouse Blocker.
11:20Eric Dibner is the owner of Euro Auto up in Bethlehem, Connecticut. And if you look at an aerial
11:25of Bethlehem, you'll see lots and lots of trees. That means Eric finds wildlife in lots of places you
11:30wouldn't expect. I would be working vehicles and I'd be servicing them and take the covers off the top of
11:36the motor. And the first thing I looked for is mice to bring. So I was in search for a product that
11:41would determine even more so. So I came across the product, the Mouse Blocker. So I decided to try it.
11:50But it's the only tool or only product types that I found to actually work. You know, I constantly have
11:57them on myself because every car, I'll say 80% of cars, if not 90% of cars, have a mouse problem.
12:04You won't know you have a problem with mice until they've already done the damage. So stop it before
12:09it starts. Go to mouseblocker.com. Motorheads, you don't have to take my word when I tell you this
12:15product is revolutionary. You can believe the experts. Now, this product has won the Muse Design
12:20Award, the German Design Award, and the Loop Design Award. And I'm talking about Strapino. This is not your
12:26average ratchet strap. If you're like me, you struggle with ratchet straps all the time. They get tangled.
12:31They're hard to use. They are just a mess. Strapino changes all of that. Now, tell me,
12:36Alan, what makes Strapino better? Well, our goal is to make a versatile strap,
12:42make it convenient, safer, just for all-around transportation. So we have a great design
12:48where it all those retracts. It saves a lot of space. It should make life a little more convenient.
12:55Retracting it is so easy. You just pull it in like a blind and then it stores up in a small space
13:01instead of having that big mess in your car. And I think that's what makes Strapino better. And it
13:05makes it last longer, right? Absolutely. I mean, I think most times straps just get tangled up. It
13:11makes a mess. It gets, you know, dumped into a corner and you struggle with it. Whereas this is,
13:17it makes it a lot easier and safer to just store. And we know Strapino is going to be durable. How are
13:22they, how are the straps from Strapino made? So they're, they're made with high quality materials.
13:27We go through extinguished testings just to make sure everything is, it's up to our standards. Our
13:34straps are made with stainless steel just to make sure it's avoid from rust. And we do a strong webbing,
13:40make sure our straps are strong enough to hold. And we have a number of different straps here. They
13:44come in different sizes. So what are the sizes available and how strong are they? So we, we have a range
13:51from one inch up to two various lengths ranging from 1500 to up to 10,000 pounds of braking strength.
14:00That's incredible. We know Strapino is great for securing cargo, maybe in the bed of your truck or
14:04on your roof or something like that. What about folks that are trailering a race vehicle, a UTV or
14:08Jeep or something like that? Yeah, absolutely. We have a range of products. So back to the hooks,
14:15we range from a snap hook to wire hooks to e-trap fittings. So it's ideal for all situations.
14:22So if you're hauling a ATV, we have an e-trap system where you can just lock into your tires
14:27and haul it from there. Alan, the great thing about Strapino is that your ratchet straps retract,
14:32make it into a really small package. You also include a cargo bag to put it in so there's not a big
14:36mess in the back of my vehicle. And speaking of messes in the back of your vehicle, if you have a pickup
14:41truck, you've got stuff tumbling around, it's hard to keep it in one place. And that is why you included
14:46this ratcheting cargo bar this time when you sent it to us. Tell the folks how this works.
14:50The ratcheting cargo bar works similar to the straps except for it's a longer bar where you can
14:56ratchet it out to lock into place. And that works a lot better for some of the situations in the truck
15:02setting where there's way more space than a regular ratchet strap would work. And you just crack it out,
15:08lock it in place, and it'll hold your equipment in a safe and secure position.
15:13This cargo bar, just like the straps, is revolutionary. There's adjustable feed on both sides
15:17so it adapts to any surface. It doesn't have to be a straight up and down surface. And of course,
15:21you can extend it. You can also retract it to fit any length of vehicle. You can move it from truck to
15:26truck, move it to all your vehicles, and it's going to keep all of your stuff in place.
15:31In the big picture, how does Strapino ensure that I'm going to be safer out there on the road
15:35and you're going to give me more peace of mind? Absolutely. Our equipment is tested
15:40for that particular reason, for safety and to save time. All you have to do is take one look at
15:45Strapino to see that their innovation gives you extra safety and it gives you peace of mind. This is
15:50the most innovative ratchet strap in America. You can find it at Strapino.com. Trust me, you're going to
15:55love these. This is Motorhead Garage presented by Steel Rubber Products. And you know, we're the only show
16:01that brings you the coolest gear for your vehicle and we are not finished yet. We'll be right back
16:05with more great stuff you're going to want to grab. Some high performance facts. Top field dragsters are
16:12the fastest accelerating manned vehicles on the planet. They can cover a 1000 foot drag strip in just
16:19over three and a half seconds. The cars burn about 15 gallons of nitro methane fuel over the course of a
16:26single run. In the top speed, 338 miles an hour.
16:36Motorhead Garage presented by Steel Rubber Products brought to you by POR15. The ultimate in rust and
16:43corrosion protection and prevention. Quiet Ride Solutions. The coolest rides have quiet ride inside.
16:51And by S&S Diesel Motorsport. Fuel systems on another level.
16:58You know, Subarus like this one are so popular in the United States. In fact, 700,000 of them are sold
17:03every year. Patrick, why? Well, the great on-road and great off-road. Perfect family car and great for
17:10adventures. Well, you guys at Anderson Design and Fabrications improve Subarus. You can upgrade them
17:15thanks to you guys. What kind of products do you have? So we specialize in lift kits and off-road
17:19accessories for your Subaru. Anywhere from simple one-inch kits like this all the way up to one and a
17:24half for a lot of these newer models. We offer some lighting accessory brackets to increase your
17:30lighting off-road capabilities. We'll talk about the lift kits in just a minute, but first let's talk
17:34about those lighting brackets. Complicated to install? No, no. They take about probably 15 minutes,
17:39depending on model. Simple two 10 millimeter nuts removed from the hood hinge and then these install
17:44right over that and then you reinstall the the brackets. And you're talking safety? Yep. And
17:49good looks too? Yep, definitely. Definitely make them look more aggressive. I love it. I love it. You've
17:53got the battery strap there. Pretty simple piece there, but it's good looking. And what does that do
17:57for us? Definitely just ties down your battery, prevents it from moving, it prevents from cracking if
18:01it definitely are out beating it around. One of the really cool pieces I've seen is the gear rack that you
18:06guys offer. Yeah, so for some of the Subaru models we offer a modular storage rack, some people call
18:11them molly racks, and this is where we can install a lot of your other accessories that typically sit
18:15on the back seat or on the floor. Fire extinguisher, first aid kits, etc. like that. So you have extra room
18:22for people, and you don't want that stuff bouncing around when you're going off-road. Definitely. And if
18:26you're going off-road you might want a lift kit, which we touched on earlier. Tell me what you have as far
18:30as lift kits, and these are your most popular item, right? Definitely, definitely. So we offer quite a range,
18:35depending on make, model, and year. On the lower end of the spectrum, as far as price goes, we offer
18:39one-inch kits. Simple HDPE plastic, they hold up for years. We've yet to have any issues with them.
18:46If you're looking for something a little more long-term that lasts a lot longer, we offer a
18:50steel one and a half inch kit that has all your camber and caster corrections, and then also includes
18:56all the alignment spacers for the rear subframe. And what this does, it corrects for all the geometry
19:01change. That way your factory alignment goes right back in the spec, and there's no issue down the
19:05road. What kind of problems have you seen from folks doing a home job, not using your parts,
19:10and just trying to do a lift by themselves? I get a lot of phone calls. I bet you do.
19:14What are some of the bigger problems you run into if you're lifting a car and you don't do the
19:18geometry right? So if you don't account for the geometry change from the lift, what typically happens
19:23is you add more positive camber. And what this does, it wears out your tires prematurely, affects
19:28handling. Definitely not something you would want to do. How do you guys do your R&D? So a lot
19:34of our R&D is all in-house. Typically what we do is either reach out to customers or purchase our own
19:39vehicle. We've started back in, well, we've been building kits since probably 2012. From there we
19:45start with 1970 and build lift kits all the way up to current models. So we've got a fair share of
19:53knowledge as far as Subaru's go and their geometry. How many folks are making parts for such a wide variety?
19:57Subarus. So we're pretty much the only company in the world building lift kits for as many models as
20:02there are Subarus. Now one other problem you told me about when you lift a Subaru, some folks are
20:08noticing some issues and you guys have helped compensate for that. Correct. Little guy right
20:11there. So this is a CVT anti-wobble insert. This inserts behind the section of the transmission and
20:17fills the void. I'd say 95% of the time we're able to get rid of this wobble or shutter that some
20:21people get. This is when you lift over an inch and a half from our experience. How do I know I'm getting a good
20:27part? Where's all this design and made? Right here in the USA. Right in your shop? Yep,
20:30right in our shop out in Oregon. That's fantastic. And what if there's an issue with it? What about
20:34warranties and that sort of thing? If there's ever a warranty, which we have not had one yet,
20:38give us a call. I'm the person who answered the phone and we can get you set. So if I know I want
20:43to lift my Subaru but I don't know exactly what to do, what's my first step? Give us a call or shoot us
20:47an email. All right, where can we find you on the web? awdadventure.com. Well, if you've got a Subaru,
20:52they've got something for you. Check them out on the web. Thanks for joining us for another episode
20:57of Motorhead Garage presented by Steel Rubber Products. And you can check us out online all week
21:02long and check out a brand new episode one week from today, same time, same sandbox. We will see you
21:08then. Until then, drive safely. So long.
