00:00Someone just got shot in the parking lot of the Gables Park 17, in the P1.
00:09All I heard was screaming and then a loud pop, and then I saw her laying on the floor,
00:13and it was like blood coming out of her neck, and her bones on the floor.
00:18Okay, where's the lady that was shot?
00:20She's in the garage, where you have to have a garage opener to open the door.
00:24Can you still see her or no?
00:26No, I exhibit the building.
00:27Is anyone with a female?
00:29No, no, I don't know what happened.
00:41Get the tape out of the trunk.
00:45Do they got cameras that come in and out of this place?
00:50Yeah, they're checking on it right now.
00:52Okay.
00:52I got to hold the homicide detector.
00:54He's waiting on the official call.
00:56He was on our dead body.
00:57He knows about it.
00:58Okay.
00:59You can call him back if he knows.
01:01He knows where he ought to go.
01:01Okay.
01:02I need you and your partner, if you will, for me.
01:05We're not here.
01:07We want to cover that site and see people from going through.
01:10Okay, just back over here.
01:11Yeah.
01:11Do you want me to take her?
01:13Let me go.
01:14I've got this thing filming, so let me go film this real quick.
01:16I received a phone call that there was a female that had been shot and killed in a parking garage
01:22in part of Dallas called Uptown.
01:24It's a very affluent area.
01:26During my tenure in homicide, this is the only case that I've ever had in Uptown.
01:29All right.
01:32There you go.
01:33Or from my corner.
01:35We need to shoot.
01:35You got her.
01:41He was sitting right here.
01:43With her.
01:44Watch where you step.
01:45Step back over there for me, okay?
01:47She was found with the door to her vehicle was open,
01:51and it was pretty clear she'd been shot in the head.
01:57Next to her body was her cell phone and also a magazine from a handgun.
02:05The magazine laying next to the body is not something that we typically see,
02:09and so I believe that there was either a struggle
02:11or there was something that caused the shooter to leave a little faster
02:16than what he wanted to leave, which caused him to drop the magazine.
02:22The first thing that stood out to me was that there was no purse inside the vehicle.
02:27At the outset of looking into it, it did appear to be a robbery,
02:31but again, that was what made it so unusual
02:34because those types of things just have not taken place in that part of town.
02:38We ran up the victim's license plate,
02:42and the vehicle came back registered to Kendra Hatcher,
02:44a pediatric dentist in the Dallas area.
02:58There was one camera that captured all the cars
03:01as they came into the parking garage and as they left.
03:04Reviewing the footage, I saw the victim pull into the parking garage.
03:13I don't think her car had even made it into the parking space yet
03:17before I see a dark figure walking over to her vehicle immediately.
03:21Like, it was dead on that that was exactly what he was looking for.
03:25There was a short time frame between when the victim parked her car
03:35and to the time that she was murdered.
03:38So I knew that she was an intended target of the shooting.
03:43Examining the suspect vehicle was an older model Jeep.
03:47There was paint flaking off of it,
03:48and it's not the typical car that you see in uptown.
03:52We weren't able to see a license plate,
03:55but we took a still photo, kind of examined it, zoomed in,
03:58and we were able to determine that it was a female driver
04:00and she had brown hair.
04:02And I knew that the shooter got out of the passenger side of the vehicle,
04:06so there was at least two people in the vehicle.
04:08We knew we needed to find the owner of that Jeep,
04:12and we felt that the public could help us with that.
04:14So we pushed out a still photo on the evening news.
04:18If someone recognizes this Jeep,
04:20we wanted to give them the opportunity to give us a call.
04:22We're in a race against time,
04:24so I wanted to track down any evidence possible
04:27that we could use to put this murder together
04:29and figure out what the murder was about.
04:34I got a message from one of Kendra's friends.
04:38All of a sudden, in one telephone call,
04:41boom, your world's upside down.
04:45Yep.
04:47I would describe Kendra as ambitious.
04:53Anything that she was passionate about, she did at 100%.
04:57She went to dental school,
04:59but she always had that passion for Spanish, too.
05:02For the church, she would volunteer her dentistry time
05:06for all the kids down in Ecuador.
05:09After everything went down, I was very confused.
05:14Because Kendra was loved by everybody.
05:17Nobody wanted to hurt her.
05:20So it was just very odd.
05:22The staff at the apartment complex notified me that Kendra Hatcher,
05:34she'd been living at that apartment building for several months.
05:37She never had any issues at the building,
05:39and she pretty much lived a very quiet life up until this incident.
05:43We learned Kendra had a significant other,
05:47so I made my way inside the apartment complex office,
05:50and I spoke with an individual named Ricardo Paniagua.
05:53We found out Dr. Paniagua and Kendra had been dating
05:57and pretty much were head over heels for each other.
06:00They were making plans to get married and eventually moved to San Francisco.
06:03He had no answers as to why someone would want to do this to Kendra.
06:07I couldn't see that there was anything that he was trying to mislead me on.
06:12He was just more distraught,
06:14trying to wrap his brain around the fact that
06:16the person he cared about was now dead.
06:18So at that point, what I focused on was just trying to figure out
06:22who it was that could have wanted the victim dead.
06:31Dallas Police Department posted the vehicle over the local news stations,
06:36and the actual owner of the vehicle contacted the police.
06:40I received a phone call from Jose Ortiz.
06:43He believed that that was his Jeep on the news.
06:45Jose, he's a mechanic, and that's what he does by trade.
06:50He said on September 2nd, the day of the murder,
06:53his childhood friend, Brenda Delgado,
06:55and one of her friends named Crystal came to his shop
06:58and needed a replacement vehicle
07:00while he did some work for them on Brenda's car.
07:03So he loaned his Jeep out to Brenda.
07:06Jose provided a cell phone number for Brenda,
07:09and I was able to call her on the spot
07:11and made arrangements with some of my co-workers
07:13to pick her up and bring her to the station.
07:15There wasn't anything really remarkable about her background.
07:23She went to high school here.
07:24She enrolled in dental hygienic school.
07:28She had never been arrested before,
07:29but as I was doing sort of background work,
07:32trying to pre-game my conversation,
07:34Ricardo Paniagua, Kendra's boyfriend,
07:37he called me in a panic.
07:38He said that he saw the still photo on the news
07:41and the female driving the vehicle
07:43had a strong resemblance to his ex-girlfriend,
07:46Brenda Delgado.
07:47What he told me was that he was in a long,
07:52drawn-out relationship with Brenda.
07:54They broke it off and several times rekindled the relationship,
07:58and then things just kind of fizzled out.
08:00He told us he just considered her a friend.
08:03In fact, the day and night that this happened,
08:06one of the first people he called to describe this horrific event
08:10or what happened was Brenda Delgado.
08:14And obviously her name came up twice at this point,
08:17so talking to Brenda was the most important thing in the case.
08:20Yeah, they do keep it cold.
08:33Do you mind switching the chair?
08:34Oh, of course.
08:35Sorry.
08:36Like I said, I appreciate you coming down and talking to me.
08:38Yes, sir. Of course.
08:40Tell me what I can help with.
08:41Okay.
08:42Well, I'm working, of course, I'm working a murder investigation.
08:45Your name came up in the investigation.
08:47So I wanted to sit down and talk with you.
08:48Yeah, yeah.
08:49Kind of figure out, you know, what's going on and get your version of events.
08:54How did my name come up?
08:56Okay.
08:56I'll explain all of that to you?
08:58Yes, yes.
08:58I want to know.
08:59I decided to be very direct and upfront with Brenda
09:02because I wanted her to know that the situation was serious,
09:06and I need to get straight to the facts on this case.
09:09Kendra Hatcher was killed on Wednesday, September 2nd.
09:14She was dating, I think, a guy that you used to date.
09:18The way that your name came up in the investigation was linked to the vehicle.
09:25Okay, the jeep, black jeep.
09:30Do you recognize this vehicle?
09:35That vehicle?
09:36I think that's my friend, Jose's vehicle.
09:41Okay.
09:42I talked to him earlier today.
09:44One of the things that he told me was that you dropped your car off at his shop
09:49and that you borrowed a vehicle of his.
09:53No, it wasn't me.
09:54Well, I definitely talked to Jose and some things that he said are very different from what you're saying.
09:59And my problem is that I believe that that vehicle was used to commit this murder.
10:04I didn't know what to do with myself.
10:16I didn't know if I was supposed to be angry or sad or disbelief.
10:21It's just that feeling of that your life just completely changed
10:26is probably the hardest thing to process.
10:41I wanted to talk to you a little bit specifically about Wednesday, what you were doing Wednesday.
10:46Wednesday, I was in Carrollton.
10:49I'm in school.
10:50I'm finished in school.
10:51Okay.
10:51I got a ride to Carrollton, and I studied from maybe 12 all the way to like about 6.
10:58Who gave you a ride?
11:00Who gave me a ride?
11:01Her...
11:03My friend, Crystal.
11:05Crystal?
11:06Okay.
11:07I went from Carrollton, went to the Chili's off of George Bush.
11:11I have the receipt in my bag.
11:13I can tell you exactly.
11:14It's on my clothes now.
11:15Okay.
11:16And you said you have the receipt in your bag?
11:17Yeah, yeah.
11:18I can show you.
11:19Let's get that.
11:20The murder took place at the same time.
11:23Brenda was at the restaurant.
11:25She immediately pulls out the receipt, and it's at the top of her wallet.
11:29It's neatly folded.
11:31Can we close now at 8.57?
11:33Okay.
11:37Do you mind if I ain't going to this?
11:38Yeah, keep it.
11:39It was just all too convenient.
11:41And for an experienced detective like Barnes, that's what immediately caught his eye,
11:45that something's not right here.
11:48You recognize this guy?
11:49Yeah.
11:49Yes.
11:51Who is that?
11:52That's my friend, Jose.
11:54So Jose said that you dropped your car off at his shop on Wednesday, specifically Wednesday.
11:59It was Crystal, my friend Crystal.
12:01Okay.
12:02So did Crystal borrow a vehicle?
12:04Yes.
12:04It was Crystal borrow a vehicle to take me to the library.
12:08Okay, so where did Crystal borrow one of his cars?
12:11Yes.
12:11There was that car.
12:12Crystal borrowed his Jeep?
12:14Oh.
12:14Okay.
12:15She got it maybe like around 10, 10.30.
12:19You guys go to his shop on the way to Carrollton?
12:23Mm-hmm.
12:23And you guys borrowed the Jeep?
12:25Mm-hmm.
12:26She kept the Jeep?
12:27Yeah.
12:27And then she had to go do some errands with her son and do some other things.
12:31And that's all I know.
12:32Okay.
12:33What's Crystal's last name?
12:35Oh, Cortez.
12:36Okay.
12:37Because I got a very different story from Jose.
12:41He told me that he was working on a vehicle for you.
12:45No.
12:46He didn't give me the car.
12:47He gave Crystal the car.
12:49I asked her.
12:50She said that she went to do errands and she went to find parking space and that's it.
12:54That's like she had her kid with her.
12:56That's all.
12:56In a parking garage or?
12:58Yeah.
12:59Are you and Crystal related?
13:00No.
13:01Okay, because I haven't seen Crystal.
13:02But I can tell you that that picture of the young lady driving that Jeep looks a lot
13:07like you.
13:08No, she was driving.
13:09Crystal was driving that car.
13:11Well, there's more to the situation than that.
13:14There really is.
13:15Okay.
13:17What I'd like to do is give Crystal a call and see if she can come down here.
13:22Does she have a car?
13:24No, it's still not working.
13:25Okay.
13:25We'll give her a call real quick and I'll see if we can get her down here.
13:28Brenda said that her friend Crystal was inside the Jeep in the parking garage.
13:33So I felt that getting Crystal in at the same time I had Brenda there would give me an
13:38advantage of kind of using them both against each other to get the tough answers that people
13:43don't normally like giving.
13:44We reached out to Crystal and then I had co-workers pick her up and give her a ride
13:48to the office.
13:50And I knew that I needed to keep the conversation with Brenda going while I was waiting for Crystal.
13:55So I didn't want her to ask to leave or for her to shut the interview down.
13:58You keep thinking all this is you, okay?
14:00And I'm going to tell you why.
14:01The Jeep, the way Crystal gets the Jeep is through you, okay?
14:07The young lady that ends up dead, her boyfriend, the relation is you.
14:13You to him turn.
14:16Crystal ends up in this parking garage.
14:18Your friend, your friend's Jeep, your ex-boyfriend's girlfriend.
14:24All three of those things point back to you.
14:27That is you.
14:27You're the common theme in all of these things.
14:30So what I'm asking you is, how does this happen?
14:33There's more to this situation than somebody looking for a parking spot.
14:36Somebody looking for a parking spot never got anybody killed.
14:40Yeah, I understand.
14:40She was very unbothered, even by being at a police station talking about a murder.
14:45And I just couldn't find that emotion.
14:47That instantly is a red flag.
14:49If you can find that point to bring emotion into it, you can normally kind of break a person
14:54down and get the truth from them at that moment.
14:56When did you find out that his girlfriend was the one that was killed?
15:00Oh, yesterday.
15:00That's been on the news.
15:01Yesterday morning.
15:02And so, did you say, well, maybe my friend who is in the news on this picture with this
15:09car, maybe she knows what happened.
15:11Maybe she saw something.
15:13Maybe she should talk to police.
15:14Maybe she can help you find out who killed your girlfriend.
15:17Did you mention any of those things?
15:19I didn't.
15:20I mean, I just didn't really think about it.
15:23You didn't think about it?
15:24You didn't call her to try to confirm?
15:26You know, did you see anything?
15:27Did you hear anything?
15:28She said no.
15:29I mean, I said...
15:30So you did ask her?
15:31Yeah, I asked Crystal, but she said no.
15:33Well, here's the thing.
15:36I'm going to find out what happened to this young lady.
15:40I owe that to her family.
15:42I owe that to her mom.
15:43Just like I would do the same thing if something happened to you.
15:47Okay.
15:49I'll step out for a minute.
15:51I will be right back.
15:53Okay.
15:53All right.
15:54She was backpedaling and point blame every other place except for herself.
15:59It was only going to go as far as Brenda wanted it to go.
16:02And so at this point, I knew Crystal was who I needed to talk to.
16:07Hello.
16:07How are you?
16:08Good.
16:08How are you?
16:09Nice to meet you.
16:11Nice to meet you, too.
16:11Who's your favorite Swiss?
16:12Oh, my God.
16:13Okay, your name came up in this investigation.
16:17Understandable.
16:18It was my understanding that on Wednesday, this past Wednesday, that's when the murder happened, that you were with Brenda and that you guys were hanging out.
16:28Yep.
16:29This is where we're at with this investigation.
16:32I know what happened, okay?
16:34I'm fully aware of what happened and I know that you, I know where you were parked at when this incident happened.
16:41Yes, I was in the parking lot at the time frame.
16:45I heard the gunshot and I'm fearful for my life.
16:58Yes, I was in downtown at that time frame.
17:02I wasn't parked though.
17:03Okay, that is on video.
17:08It's on video.
17:09Okay, I wasn't parked though.
17:12No, that's not going to work.
17:14This vehicle was parked on the first floor going down near the ramp from going from P1 to P2.
17:22Because I went to P2 but I just came in and out and honestly I have my son in there.
17:26I did, I don't have anything to hide, honestly.
17:29No, that's not going to work either.
17:32I know that what you're telling me is not true.
17:35What I'm telling you is, is that it is captured on video.
17:39All right.
17:40Okay.
17:40Here, I feel like, I feel like I don't like all this stuff in this room.
17:44I moved the table out of the way because I wanted to get more of a personal connection with her.
17:49I could see, you know, your leg twitching.
17:52Or I can see when I ask certain questions, this is what her physical response is.
17:56And I didn't want her to feel like she could kind of hide behind the table any longer.
18:01Okay, well tell me what.
18:02Okay, I'm pulling in the parking lot.
18:07Before I pull in, there's a guy with a mask right in front of me.
18:11The guy gets in my seat and he puts the gun right here.
18:14My son's in the back.
18:15My son is asleep the whole time.
18:16The whole time.
18:17He's like, don't look at me, don't say anything to me, nothing will happen to you or your kid.
18:21So he tells me to go in, go park.
18:23So then he gets off and he mugs the girl.
18:28I don't know her name, I don't know anything about her.
18:31And he comes out and he gets in the back seat and he sits down and he's like, drive, just drive.
18:36He says, I know exactly what your tattoos look like.
18:38I know if you say anything, I'm going to come and get you.
18:41I booked it and I dropped them off and that was it.
18:44I called it a day.
18:45I don't want anything to do with this.
18:47What do you look like?
18:49He has like medium dreads, kind of tall belt, skinny, slim.
18:54Honestly, I'm willing to take a polygraph.
18:58I'm willing to take a polygraph.
18:59There's no need for that because you're not telling me the truth.
19:02You're not telling me the truth.
19:04You want me to believe that some guy hops in your truck and you don't know what's going on.
19:08Do you know who that young lady is that got killed?
19:10No, I don't.
19:10That's Brenda's ex-boyfriend's girlfriend.
19:14Okay, and I've been talking to her today before you got down here.
19:20You need to tell the truth.
19:21I'm telling you.
19:22No, you're not.
19:23You were inside a vehicle that was used in a murder.
19:26Why didn't you call 911 once you found out this happened?
19:31Because I didn't know it was on the news until yesterday that I found out.
19:36I mean, you knew somebody got shot.
19:38I'm scared for my life.
19:40I'm telling you right now.
19:41I don't believe this bullshit.
19:42You're telling me that you pulled Mr. Garage into a cage and to sit here with a guy pointing
19:49a gun at you and your baby and you think I'm going to believe that?
19:52Nobody will believe that.
19:54Me or anybody else that hears this.
19:57Nobody is going to believe that.
19:59I understand.
19:59Young lady, you don't understand.
20:02Whoever you're protecting is not more important than your son.
20:06That is not a decision I can make for you.
20:08Now you need to tell me the truth.
20:14Brenda just wanted me to take her purse.
20:16That's it.
20:17She wanted you to take her purse?
20:18She wanted me to do it.
20:19500 just to take her purse.
20:21Since I don't have a job, I'm not employed right now, I don't have money.
20:26And how does this conversation start?
20:27Has she told you about this girl before?
20:29Or about her boyfriend?
20:30No.
20:30She was like, um, ex.
20:33That's how she refers to him.
20:34Ex has a girlfriend.
20:36And I was like, okay.
20:37And she's like, I just want to know more about girlfriend.
20:41That's it.
20:42She's like, I'll pay 500 to take her purse, and that's it.
20:46I said, okay.
20:47And then I was like, well, I don't want to do that because I have a kid.
20:50She's like, well, we'll pay a guy to come in and take her purse, and I'll go for more.
20:55Where do you find this guy at?
20:56Just right there at the B&B pawn shop.
20:58There's a pawn shop right there.
20:59He's walking.
21:00I pull up.
21:01Hey, you want to make some money?
21:02You pull up in the parking lot?
21:03No.
21:03I'm just driving by.
21:04Um, do you want to make some quick money?
21:07He said, yeah.
21:09Murders just don't happen like that.
21:11People don't pick up strangers, and two strangers hop in a car to go and steal someone's purse,
21:17and someone ends up shot in the head.
21:19I just didn't buy that.
21:20There was more truth in that story than what she had previously told me, but I still wasn't where I needed to be with her.
21:28So, you're sitting inside this Jeep, inside this parking garage.
21:32Why did you park where you parked at?
21:34I wanted somebody to see me.
21:37I purposely parked there.
21:39Okay, so...
21:40Because I didn't even know he had a gun.
21:42I really didn't know.
21:43Show me, Ray.
21:46Draw me a nice picture of what this looks like on the inside of this place, where you parked at.
21:50Okay, there's the main gate, right?
21:53There's two cars.
21:54I parked in between two cars.
21:56So, he made me park there first, because he said there was no cameras.
22:00And then I told him it was this, and it's a white Toyota.
22:04You show up there a little after seven, and you park.
22:08You sit there for a while, and this car drives in.
22:13What do you hear?
22:15No, no, no, no.
22:17Who's saying no?
22:18I think it's the girl, Kendra.
22:20And I hear, no, no, no, no, no.
22:23Pow.
22:24Done with it.
22:25I didn't see how, where, what.
22:28I don't know.
22:29I really didn't know he had a gun.
22:31He was just supposed to go in, get her purse, and he was supposed to leave.
22:34Okay.
22:36When you ask the guy, why did he shoot her, what did he say?
22:39She was being stubborn, and he didn't want to get on the purse.
22:42I said, no, go to the jail.
22:44I have a son.
22:45And he said, well, you better not say anything, because I'm going to kill you and your son.
22:50What did you do after you left the garage with this guy?
22:52I drove down, dropped him off, where he told me to drop him off.
22:55I go get Brenda, and I go home.
22:58Did you tell anybody about this?
23:00Nobody knows nothing.
23:01At that point, she just owned up to everything that had happened and her part in it.
23:12They have her in the vehicle.
23:13You can clearly see her.
23:16And that's enough probable cause for an arrest.
23:19The information Crystal was able to provide for me basically gave me the foundation for the investigation
23:24and that Brenda was the mastermind.
23:27Now I want to take this information and try to use it with Brenda to see if she gives me who the shooter was and what the motive was.
23:34I just got done talking to Crystal.
23:36I had a very interesting conversation.
23:38Mm-hmm.
23:39And I know that you haven't been truthful with me.
23:41Mm-hmm.
23:42But I understand what it's like to want something that you can't have.
23:49I also know what it feels like to want something so bad that you're willing to do anything for it.
23:57Sometimes people do that for money.
23:59Mm-hmm.
24:00Sometimes people do that for attention.
24:02And sometimes people do that for love.
24:04Mm-hmm.
24:05Okay.
24:05And so what I'm asking you for is for the truth.
24:18I mean, that's the truth.
24:20I'm not trying to.
24:20Do you really expect for me or for anybody else to believe that this girl, this dating, this guy that you're still in love with is probably going to marry this guy that you're still in love with.
24:36Do you expect the world to believe that you had nothing to do with this?
24:40That you didn't have anything at all, even though you made an arrangement for this young lady to get in this vehicle.
24:48You set that up.
24:51Crystal, she's got a very good description of how she ended up in that car and how she ended up in that garage that belongs to this young lady that's dating your ex-boyfriend that you still talk to all the time.
25:04That you still converse with and share moments with.
25:07Yes.
25:07And it's not going to take people a whole lot.
25:10This isn't rocket science.
25:13People will put this together very fast.
25:17That's why I'm asking you why.
25:20I honestly, I'm telling you, there is no plan.
25:22There's nothing.
25:23There's no motive.
25:24I have no reason.
25:25Oh, there's plenty of motive.
25:28There's plenty of motive.
25:29You cannot have him as long as she's alive.
25:32Everybody has feelings and everybody has a point where they break.
25:38Everybody has a wall.
25:39And that's what I think happened.
25:41I mean, like I'm saying, it was just very casual.
25:46Casual doesn't end up with somebody dead.
25:50No, absolutely not.
25:52So why do you want his girlfriend dead?
25:55I don't.
25:56I don't even know who he was seeing.
25:58I don't even know who he was dating.
26:00Okay.
26:01You don't know.
26:03You don't know.
26:04Give me a second.
26:11Can I just get my attorney at this time?
26:14Because I don't think we, I mean, there's not, there's, I just need my attorney because
26:19you're not understanding me.
26:21You can have your attorney.
26:22You can have your attorney.
26:23That's fine.
26:24So you're terminating this interview.
26:27Yeah, I need my attorney because I'm, I'm done.
26:29I'm tired and I just need my attorney too.
26:32Okay.
26:34All right.
26:37We were unable to charge her with murder at the time.
26:40We didn't have enough solid evidence, but Brenda had a couple of unpaid traffic tickets
26:45that had turned into warrants and we decided to arrest her for her unpaid traffic tickets.
26:51We decided that she needed to go to jail and that was all we could do at the time.
26:55She immediately left the United States and headed to Mexico.
27:10It lets you know that you're on the right track, that this person is involved.
27:16And in fact, in court, flight can be introduced as evidence of guilt.
27:20It was one of those things that we're like, it just kind of sucks the air out of you for
27:25a second.
27:26Once you step foot outside of the state of Texas, my badge is no good anymore.
27:30So at this moment, the focus of the case was now identifying a shooter.
27:37Crystal is our best witness.
27:40If we are going to get Brenda, if we are going to get a shooter, we're going to have to use
27:44crystal crystal had also described the shooter having a scar on his hand.
28:10You want all the individuals that are involved in the offense, but almost certainly the person
28:15that had no qualms about getting out of a car and just shooting someone in the head.
28:20You're going to want to get that person and get that person off the street.
28:31We basically took crystal's phone records, Brenda's phone records, and we were able to
28:37come up with a number that was similar to both records that they'd spoken with numerous
28:41times, and we found that number was contacted on the day of the murder.
28:47They identify who the phone number belongs to, find out his name is Christopher Love.
28:51They're able to locate an actual photograph of Christopher Love, and he resembles the sketch
28:57that Crystal had provided.
28:59One thing that I was able to learn about him is that he had been arrested numerous times
29:04in his life, going all the way back to his juvenile years.
29:08He's got a criminal history for some violent offenses, and he had also done some time for
29:12his involvement in those offenses.
29:15I feel pretty good about the possibility that this is my shooter.
29:19So we did a ping order on the phone, which allowed for us every 15 minutes to track a physical
29:24location of this phone.
29:36The FBI noticed that the coordinates of the phone started moving at the same time a blue
29:42Chrysler Sebring was driving out of the parking lot.
29:45The FBI followed the blue Chrysler Sebring, and once an individual got out of the car, they
29:50made contact with him, and the individual was named Christopher Love.
29:54Outside of his physical appearance and similarity to the sketch, he also was in possession of
30:01this cell phone that had been in contact with Brendo and Crystal also on the day of the murder.
30:17The interview with Christopher was very challenging.
30:20He was pretty much unknown to the case until a few minutes before I'm sitting down with
30:26him in a room.
30:27The surveillance video of the murder, I couldn't 100% say that it's him because it's a grainy
30:32video.
30:33But I'm going to work him as long as I need to, to get him to tell me the truth.
30:37My name's Detective Orange.
30:40I'm working a murder investigation.
30:41Your name came up during the investigation, okay?
30:44There was a dentist that was killed.
30:46Have you heard anything about that?
30:50And so I need to speak with you in regards to this murder.
30:59All right.
31:00This is my partner, Chaney.
31:01What's up, man?
31:02Let me see your hands real quick, man.
31:04I was looking at your hands.
31:07You got a scar right here on this hand.
31:08What happened to your hand right here?
31:10Somebody shot me.
31:12You got shot?
31:13Mm-hmm.
31:15They tried to rob me in Memphis.
31:17They tried to carjack me anyway.
31:18I can't believe my hand right there.
31:21They noticed the scar on his hand that Crystal had described the shooter having.
31:26It's a match.
31:27That by itself is enough of what we call probable cause, but it wouldn't have been enough for
31:32the conviction.
31:33Okay.
31:35Well, here's the thing, man.
31:36Me and my partner got called in on September 2nd to work a murder over in Uptown.
31:44You know where Uptown is in Dallas?
31:46No.
31:47Have you heard anything about that?
31:49There was a dentist that was killed.
31:51A dentist?
31:52A dentist.
31:53Kendra Hatcher.
31:55Was killed in a parking garage.
31:58That was the kind of thing to me.
31:59Okay.
32:00You know a female by the name of Crystal?
32:06You don't know a Crystal Cortez?
32:09What about a Brenda Delgado?
32:12No.
32:15Have you ever seen this girl?
32:18I don't think so.
32:19Okay.
32:20What about this girl?
32:24I don't know these people.
32:25Let me ask you this.
32:27Have you ever rode in a black Jeep Cherokee?
32:30I ain't rode in no Jeep Cherokee.
32:31Okay.
32:32Your name came up in this investigation as being friends with these two girls.
32:42That you know these two girls.
32:44From where?
32:45Is it here?
32:46I don't know how you met them.
32:48That's why I'm talking to you today to figure out if you do know them.
32:52And if you do know them, you know, maybe there's a reason why you know them.
32:56No.
32:56What I'm interested in is how your phone number will end up in these girls' phones.
33:04I ain't gonna tell you.
33:06Probably weed.
33:08You ever go to North Dallas?
33:10No.
33:12No reason your phone records would put you there either, is it?
33:15I know.
33:20Dallas people is crazy.
33:22Why you say that?
33:24Because of this.
33:25This is crazy right here.
33:26What's crazy?
33:27What's crazy about it?
33:28That I'm sitting in a homicide officer named D.
33:31Well, we got to clean this up, man.
33:35This young lady right here was able to very distinctly provide me details about how you
33:39look and where she has been with you.
33:42Now, for her not to know you, she pulling a lot of damn details out of nowhere.
33:46That's what I understand it.
33:49And whatever you say is cool.
33:52But I didn't do these, bro.
33:54Now, I'm gonna ask you about the next girl lady.
33:57Anyway, she's right here.
33:59To me, she's a lethal.
34:02Like a lethal weapon.
34:04She's the one that, you know how, when they put the, when they looking at a crime family,
34:10they always have the top picture at the top.
34:13And then they had a spider web coming down.
34:15Her picture's up there.
34:17She's number one.
34:18You get what I'm saying?
34:19Let me ask you, when, once we get her, when she says she know you, she point the finger
34:26at you.
34:27That's what I don't know about me.
34:28I don't know if she's gonna point the finger at me because I can't control her.
34:31I see.
34:32That's a low question, sir.
34:33I just said she don't know me.
34:35No, she don't know me.
34:41Can I get something to drink?
34:43Yeah, what you want to drink, man?
34:45I want some coffee, but I don't take anything.
34:49Man, why do, why do these people talking like you are involved in this situation, man?
34:55That's what I'm thinking about right now.
34:57Huh?
34:58I said that's what I'm thinking about right now.
35:00That's it.
35:01And they providing facts of how to prove that you involved in it.
35:06Man, I don't give a fuck what they provide.
35:09He's nonchalant.
35:10He doesn't know anything.
35:11He didn't do it.
35:12You know, this goes on for hours.
35:14I don't have good a lot of times people call me weed on my phone.
35:19I don't know them.
35:23I know I ain't never roll with them.
35:25For sure.
35:26Ain't no weapon.
35:28I got a time right now for a weapon.
35:31These places ain't got no cameras.
35:32What do these ladies get killed?
35:34Come on, you know I got cameras.
35:36So they know what the sugar look like?
35:38It's a lot of stuff that is being done to this case.
35:42So we're rolling into the next morning.
35:44At that point, we had been up all night and we're taking a break from the interrogation to kind of refocus and reshift.
35:51One of my coworkers went out to the auto pound where Christopher Love's car was at and the K-9 began doing a sniff search on the blue Chrysler.
36:00The K-9 alerted to gunpowder immediately and they found a Smith & Wesson .40 caliber handgun tucked behind the center console and on the passenger side of the vehicle.
36:10The magazine laying next to the body belonged to a .40 caliber, a Smith & Wesson handgun.
36:16We did ballistic testing and we knew it was the firearm for the murder.
36:20It kind of gave me a second wind.
36:22Everything kind of opened up for me again.
36:24So I wanted to confront him with a picture of this firearm and give him an opportunity to explain it.
36:31We need to have a conversation, all right?
36:33We need to search for one of your car.
36:38We need to find a gun in your car.
36:41We need to find a gun in your car.
36:43We need to find a gun in your car.
36:45All right.
36:46Here's what I got for.
36:50We'll look at that.
37:00We'll look at that.
37:02Detective Barnes confronted him with a murder weapon and then that's when you start seeing him being more willing to share information.
37:13How did you get linked up with Brenda?
37:16Crystal.
37:17Crystal.
37:18So give me a rundown of this day, man.
37:19I got up and went over there and served a little weed and .
37:24Crystal.
37:25She came over there about five and we rolled over there.
37:28Where'd y'all go?
37:30Downtown.
37:31How did you know what time to be there?
37:35I didn't.
37:36They knew all the information, .
37:39All my information was to snatch your ID.
37:43I need the ID, the ID, the ID.
37:46That's all it was, the ID.
37:47Who else was in the car with y'all?
37:49There wasn't nobody but us.
37:50Her son wasn't in there?
37:52No.
37:53Yeah, man.
37:54No, it was just you and Crystal in there?
37:57Yeah.
37:58What kind of conversation did you have with Brenda about this?
38:02Or what did she tell you?
38:04She came in with the cartel.
38:06It was just like, go take this for the cartel and I'm going to pay you.
38:12And she told you she was from the cartel?
38:14Yeah.
38:15And Christopher is told that Brenda Delgado is with the cartel.
38:21And if he agrees to do this, she'll make sure that he has enough cocaine to sell for as long as he wants to sell cocaine.
38:30So in his mind, this is his way to go from a small-time drug dealer to a big-time drug dealer.
38:36So he agrees to do it.
38:38When are y'all going to get Brenda?
38:40We're going to work on getting Brenda, man.
38:42Because she the puzzle y'all, the top of the puzzle y'all need.
38:46Well, I mean, we're going to go get her.
38:48You can promise that.
38:49You can be promising.
38:50Yeah, because they been doing that shit.
38:52Planning it or whatever they was doing.
38:55Whatever happened, happened a couple months ago.
38:58Three, four months ago.
39:00They been watching this lady for three, four months.
39:03Yeah, they ran some game money.
39:09The girl that got killed was Brenda's, ex-boyfriend's new girlfriend.
39:15Brenda's?
39:16Yeah.
39:17She didn't have nothing to do with any cartel.
39:19She was just a dentist.
39:21They go to work every day, just a regular person.
39:23Okay.
39:24Well, I'm going to go knock this paperwork out.
39:38All right.
39:39It was a very quick and short-lived round of high fives going around the office.
39:55But I think the immediate thing was, what can we do now to get Brenda in custody?
40:01Brenda Delgado did not pull the trigger, but police say she planned and paid for others to carry out the heinous crime.
40:15Now she's become the ninth woman in history to make the FBI's 10 most wanted lists since it began in 1950.
40:22After placing her on this list, we started receiving phone calls, relaying intelligence of where her whereabouts were at.
40:37Did you kill that?
40:39Did you kill the dentist?
40:41When I found out she was captured, there was a lady that was sitting next to me, a complete random stranger, explained everything.
40:48And I was like, can I have a hug?
40:49She's like, yeah, I gave a big hug.
40:51And so, yeah, overwhelming feelings of joy.
41:11You introduced me to new feelings of absolute hatred and disgust, things I never thought I could feel before.
41:23Your ability to destroy lives both emotionally and physically is despicable and incomprehensible.
41:30You are ashamed of humanity, and you are a destroyer of lives.
41:34May God have mercy on you.
41:36We tried Brenda's case eight months later.
41:45Jury was only out 20 minutes before they came back with a guilty verdict.
41:48For capital murder, she received a life without parole.
41:51Brenda Delgado, justice has been served for the people whose lives were touched in one way or another by this.
42:05incredible, amazing woman who I was honored to be Kendra Hatcher's mother.
42:22There is no reason in the world that that young lady should be dead. None.
42:26She's completely innocent victim.
42:27That makes it even more ridiculous for this to have taken place.
42:31After Brenda was found guilty, me and my family were at the hotel, and there's this big rainbow that's like filling up the Dallas sky.
42:40I can feel that she's kind of my guardian angel.
42:45I want people to know that when they do come across somebody like Kendra, to really cherish it.
42:54If it is true that the good die young, then make every moment count.
43:01It will be taken place together.
43:03It will be taken place together.
43:05It will hour there and even make it easy.
43:06It will be taken place in the city.
43:07It will be taken place in the city.
43:09But if it is unknown, here's a country고.
43:10The classic kingdom is a country to have been played together.
43:13We are at the city of about 15-30.
43:14We are at the city of about 15-30.
43:16The city of about 15-30...
