Transcript
00:00all right we're wrapping up the weekend cold the weekend snow for the i-95 corridor from philly
00:11to boston the first accumulating snow we're wrapping that up on the feed and now i'm going
00:16to start taking a look at christmas week a much different pattern but a tricky one at that want
00:21to take you out to this this is our current snow cover uh across the country and there's that little
00:26band of snow with storm number one we've been talking about it from iowa about a one to three
00:33some spots got four and five inches right now 30 of the u.s covered in snow and nights this is an
00:40impressive snow coverage here from the midwest to the northeast what's not impressive is this
00:45i mean this is bad news for the west you really need to start building your snow cover in the
00:54rockies here remember the rockies the intermountain west they don't get enough
00:59precipitation to sustain water for their population they need it in the mountains for snow melt
01:05and without the snow this becomes a huge problem now i do think there's going to be more opportunity
01:11for next week but this is bad news bad news right now for the rockies and and and california as well
01:18you need that snow cover in the sierra all right i want to start wrapping up our weekend storm and i
01:25think this is going to end up being a big deal here not so much because of the snow amounts that
01:30we're going to see in philadelphia new york city and boston we're generally talking one to three but
01:35it's going to be coming saturday night you're going to start with temperatures above freezing and then
01:40they go below freezing into the 20s as the snow picks up i think i think roads new york city
01:46philadelphia southern new jersey are treacherous saturday night sunday morning i think a lot of
01:52people here one to three inches they don't think any big deal it's going to become a huge deal
01:56travel wise now we've got that cold air coming in let me let me take you to that i've been showing
02:02this all week it's such a unbelievable map i mean the temperatures here this morning model is showing
02:09below 30 below zero this is the northwest territories this is the yukon territory and this is a direct shot
02:16coming down this is friday night saturday morning look at the pinks saturday afternoon saturday
02:22evening so this whole area you start getting in the pink area you're below zero you know and then
02:28you're going to get that bleeding into the northeast on sunday and it's going to be accompanied by wind
02:33i mean the northeast on sunday and even saturday afternoon in the midwest it's it's bitterly cold
02:40with the strong winds accuweather real field temperature single numbers below zero midwest
02:46saturday sunday northeast now we've also been talking about what the snow that's coming and
02:51this is going to come in as we talked about let me show you the upper air pattern so let's go back
02:57this is the upper low this is across the northwest territories this is what's bringing the cold air
03:02and as we mentioned there's going to be a piece of energy that comes in on the southern side of this
03:07that comes southeast that's going to produce the arctic wave see here it comes right in here so this is the
03:12system coming into the british columbia coast right now on the north american continent it comes around
03:18the base of the trough and here it comes right in there now that's tomorrow evening the thing to watch
03:24for is you see the bright colors here this is going to be a strengthening system as it comes south and east
03:32however the reason why this is not going to be a big storm is because of the shape of the trough
03:38or what i call the orientation of the trough as we get in the saturday afternoon this is what i call
03:44positively tilted the trough is tilted from northeast to southwest and because of that
03:51the surface storm which forms is going to go out to sea now if this trough was located more like this
03:58well then the storm instead of going this way it would come up this way and it would be a but
04:06much bigger snow for a larger area but the trough axis just isn't right for a big snow now there's a
04:13lot of energy in here a lot of energy look at the reds in here there it goes and i and you know what
04:20i'm really interested in is across southern southeastern pennsylvania new jersey and eastern long
04:27island because watch this red area on the 500 millibar watches right there you look at that red
04:34that's an impressive area of red that means you have a lot of wind energy i think that's an area
04:40to keep an eye on i want to show you our snowfall totals and i'm going to come back and show you
04:44something that i'm watching all right let me show you this this is our snowfall total map here and you
04:51can see you have a little rip-off zone in central parts of pennsylvania i think even here you're going
04:56to be looking at um an inch of snow in in state college and parts of central pennsylvania there's
05:02a little rip-off zone now this snow des moines toward peoria and indianapolis a lot of this occurs
05:08three to six inches here because this is going to be a dry fluffy snow you'll probably get 15 to
05:13one ratios it's the kind of snow that's going to be fluffy and accumulates quickly that's why we have
05:19three to six i'll tell you what though i keep an eye on this area from about philadelphia east right
05:26in here watch that area now we have one to three but i let's see if you can get three four five inches
05:34in this area all right and it's all because of that energy that i mentioned earlier how the energy is
05:41going to be strengthening here i let me let me i want to show you the surface map on this and you
05:47could see what i'm talking about watch this uh area in here now watch the storm here it comes now
05:54watch as we get in the saturday night boom right there right there you see that right here
06:00some darker blue showing up that makes sense to me given that watch see how that energy goes to a dark
06:09red you see that right over philadelphia right in there you see that uh switched on me
06:16right there that's what worries me and you could see that little dark area so let's keep an eye on
06:24it the other thing as i mentioned a lot of people think well one to three inches isn't a big deal
06:28it's a very big deal when you have falling temperatures like this so i'm telling you this
06:34is going to be very slippery travel very slippery travel now really quickly i want to end here
06:39this is our forecast for christmas week all right it's certainly going to be not as cold but let's
06:47keep an eye on these storms coming out of the southwest christmas week a lot of people thought christmas eve
06:54would be a blowtorch in the east i don't think so stay with us
