Transcript
00:00After years of wage negotiations and mounting frustration among educators,
00:05there's renewed optimism tonight for teachers across the country.
00:10The Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association says
00:13progress has been made towards the payment of increased salaries
00:16following a four-hour meeting with Chief Personal Officer Dr. Darrell Dindial.
00:22Union officials described the discussions as productive,
00:25with several key matters brought to the table.
00:28My tutor would have just met with the Chief Personal Officer, Dr. Darrell Dindial, Commander,
00:34and we are pleased to say that it was a very fruitful meeting,
00:38very cordial, very professional, and quite a number of things would have come out of it.
00:43One thing that our membership would be waiting patiently to hear
00:46is that we have made some heavy with respect to your new salaries.
00:51In January, there's a Cabinet note going into more, please God.
00:55So once that Cabinet note is received and it is discussed and so on,
01:00we will hopefully get the new salary by January.
01:04Back pay, however, is expected to follow later,
01:07with the union hopeful that outstanding arrares could be settled
01:11by the end of the first quarter of 2026.
01:15Teachers had already accepted a 5% increase earlier this year
01:19for the period 2020 to 2023.
01:23Back pay, as we said, it will take a little longer,
01:26so we are hoping for the end of the first quarter,
01:29as we would have promised you.
01:31Dr. Darrell Dindial has made commitments to certain things
01:35and he seems like a very genuine individual
01:38and we would want to hold him to the promises that he would have made
01:41to tutor on this particular day.
01:42The update from Tutor comes just days after the Public Service Association
01:47secured a 10% salary increase for civil servants,
01:50statutory authorities and Tobago House of Assembly workers
01:54under a new memorandum of agreement.
01:57The Prime Minister on Friday told Parliament that public servants
02:00will be getting some money before Christmas,
02:03a move that has further heightened expectation among teachers,
02:08still awaiting their own adjustments.
