National evening forecast presented by Tom Morgan
Transcript
00:00Hi again. It's been a very wet start to December for many of us and the Unsettled theme is
00:04set to continue through the next week or so at least. And it's partly thanks to the jet
00:09stream. So at the moment we've got quite a cold Arctic plunge of air moving southwards
00:13across the Atlantic, meeting much warmer subtropical air. And it's that temperature contrast that's
00:18generating quite a strong jet stream. And the jet stream is what fuels our weather quite
00:22often. The jet stream is moving in from the west to the east and bringing in areas of
00:26low pressure across the UK. And that's going to be the case over the next few days as well.
00:31It's this area of low pressure in particular that we're keeping a very close eye on for
00:34Monday night and into Tuesday. It's going to potentially rapidly deepen as we move into
00:39Tuesday. So we already have some concerns about how much rain we'll see, particularly across
00:43Wales and southwestern England. And a yellow warning is already in place. But there'll
00:48also be some very strong winds on the southern side of this area of low pressure shown here
00:52by these tightly packed isobars. So we do also need to keep an eye on those. We could well
00:56see some damaging gusts in some areas.
00:59But meanwhile, let's go back to Saturday evening. And there are some showers around, but the
01:03winds are slowly easing down for a time. And many places actually will turn largely dry
01:08as we go through the next few hours and into Sunday morning. Showers will continue, though,
01:12to affect parts of Shetland and Orkney. And here we have got a fairly strong south-easterly
01:16breeze still continuing. But it's across the north where we're likely to see the lowest temperatures
01:21overnight tonight. So where skies do stay clear for any length of time, we could well
01:24see a touch of frost in one or two spots, particularly across parts of Scotland. Further south and
01:30west where we've got the cloud and the rain returning. And here temperatures will actually
01:33rise through the night. So by the morning, 12 or 13 degrees across parts of Cornwall.
01:38And here it will be turning pretty damp indeed.
01:40So as we go through the day on Sunday, we're going to see outbreaks of rain slowly migrating
01:45their way north-eastwards across the UK. The rain always most persistent and the heaviest
01:49towards the west. So across Northern Ireland in particular, we could see 25 to 30 millimetres
01:53of rain within six to nine hours. And that's likely to bring potentially some travel disruption
01:58and some surface water flooding on the roads. But there'll also be some heavy spells of rain
02:02in other parts of the UK. Northern England, for example, and parts of Scotland.
02:06A pretty wet afternoon to come here. And following the rain, it will start to turn increasingly windy.
02:12So gales developing around some south-western coast by the afternoon. But those south-westly
02:17winds are actually going to bring in some very mild air. So even milder there on Saturday.
02:21Highs of 13 or 14 degrees in the south. Somewhat chillier across parts of Scotland, partly due to
02:27that cold start and then the rain coming in here. So highs generally in single figures.
02:32Now it will turn more widely breezy as we go through Sunday evening. The rain gradually becoming
02:38confined to northern Scotland by Sunday night. But following from the west, we'll see a whole
02:42rash of showers. So potentially a more general spell of rain pushing eastwards into Wales and England
02:47as we go into the early hours of Monday morning. Perhaps even some hail and thunder mixed in with
02:51this band of showers as well. With the wind staying fairly brisk overnight, Sunday into Monday
02:57is likely to stay quite mild. So we're not expecting too much in the way of frost and temperatures
03:01perhaps not falling below double figures in the south. So Monday is going to be a fairly breezy
03:07picture. We are going to see a mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers. Possibly some longer
03:12spells of rain across parts of Scotland at times as well. And otherwise the showers largely across
03:17more northern or western areas. So you have got a much better chance of staying dry on Monday. And there
03:22will be some sunny spells for many of us for a time. Although probably turning cloudy in the south
03:27later in the afternoon. Here once again another very mild day. Highs of 13 or 14 degrees. A little
03:34bit cooler further north. More like 8 to 10 degrees across parts of Scotland. So do keep an eye on our
03:40weather warnings over the next few days as we see the potential for some severe weather on Monday
03:44night and Tuesday. That's everything from me. I'll see you again very soon.
