14 December - National weather forecast presented by Jonathan Vautrey.
Transcript
00:00Hello there. It certainly has been a very wet weekend for some of us.
00:04Parts of Cumbria have seen over 200 millimetres of rainfall since Saturday.
00:09That's more than what we'd normally expect in this region for the whole month of December.
00:13We've had these repeated pulses and outbreaks of very heavy rain pushing their way into northwestern regions of the UK throughout this weekend,
00:21just really building those rainfall totals up, providing the potential for that flooding and disruption.
00:25There is potential for that rain to pep up further overnight, with another band of very heavy rain sweeping initially across parts of Scotland,
00:33but then eventually into other areas of northern England and Wales during the early hours of Monday morning.
00:38Either side of that, it will stay largely drier, though it's quite cloudy and breezy for the far southeast,
00:44and it will be fairly mild here, temperatures holding up around 8 to 11 degrees Celsius.
00:49But where skies begin to clear for Scotland and Northern Ireland, temperatures will dip away into the late night period,
00:55and some rural spots could get close towards single figures, maybe even some very patchy frost in the sheltered glens of Scotland.
01:03With this rain still in play as we head throughout Monday, there are amber weather warnings in force throughout the day.
01:09Still for parts of Cumbria, where again, we could still potentially see the rain waving as we head throughout the day
01:15to provide further outbreaks of very heavy rain.
01:18So whilst it may turn drier here for a time during Monday morning, be prepared for the rain to potentially return into the afternoon.
01:25But there's another amber weather warning in place across southern Wales into Monday.
01:30Here we could again see 100 millimetres of rain building up, and certainly because the ground is so saturated here at the moment,
01:36following recent flooding and other storm events, there will likely be some disruption as we head throughout the day.
01:43So do take care and make sure you are checking any travel providers first thing on Monday morning before you do step out to the door.
01:50There are other yellow rain warnings in force for parts of Wales, southwestern England and northern England as well.
01:57So again, continue to take care if you're travelling through any of these locations,
02:00because that rain band really is going to be quite persistent as we head throughout the day.
02:04Whilst it will wave, as I've mentioned, really it is those regions that will see the rain really build up right throughout the day.
02:10Again, the far south east should stay largely dry, perhaps a few bright spells, but often quite cloudy here and breezy in general.
02:18But again, it's quite mild with those winds coming in from the southwest, and so it's temperatures around 10 to 12 degrees Celsius.
02:26For Scotland and Northern Ireland, tomorrow is a much better day overall compared to what we've seen this weekend.
02:30More in the way of sunshine developing.
02:32It might be a touch hazy in places as the cloud is still in place.
02:35And there are a few showers just to watch out for across the far northwest of Scotland, but temperatures are a little down compared to some recent days now that we see fresher air moving in behind that front.
02:45So generally around 7 to 8 degrees Celsius.
02:49Our rain band will continue to push its way southeastwards as we head throughout Monday evening and overnight.
02:56Those rain warnings continuing until the early hours of Tuesday morning.
03:00So do continue to take care with those heavy pulses of rain still possible.
03:04Where this cloud lingers across parts of England in particular, again, it will hold those temperatures up overnight around 6 to 9 degrees Celsius.
03:10But a notably chillier night to come for Scotland and Northern Ireland with much more in the way of some frost developing, particularly for rural areas.
03:18So it will be quite a chilly start to Tuesday morning.
03:21Again, with those showers just drifting their way into the northwest.
03:24And with that fresher air in play, we may see a touch of snow falling over the tops of the Scottish mountains.
03:29I wouldn't take the graphics too literally with this rain band in the southeast, though, on Tuesday.
03:33There is some uncertainty in regards to how quickly that could break up or clear during the day.
03:38And we may still see some outbreaks of rain lingering here throughout the day.
03:41So it's worth getting up to date with the forecast.
03:44But for other areas of southwest England, parts of Wales, potentially into northern England as well,
03:49again, the sunshine will gradually begin to filter its way through as we head into the day.
03:53And generally, much like we've seen across Scotland and Northern Ireland on Monday,
03:57Tuesday is when we'll start to see that rain really easing for these other regions of England and Wales here.
04:03And so overall, a generally better day to come.
04:06More of us, though, will be in that fresher air mass now.
04:09So temperatures down around 6 to 9 degrees Celsius.
04:12But that is roundabout where we'd expect them to be actually for December.
04:17Do stay up to date with the forecast because more wet and windy weather could return as we head into the second half of the week.
04:25And there may be further warnings issued at time.
04:27So do stay up to date with the details.
04:29I'll see you again soon. Bye bye.
