00:00All right, we're on 5.9 KISS FM, Detroit's number one for Smooth R&B and Old School, man.
00:03It's your boy, Showtime Dazar.
00:06Detroit, got a legend in the building, man, a growing legend.
00:09Really don't need to introduce this, man, because you've seen him all the time on your social media
00:14from the skits he's doing, and now he's killing it on the stand-up stage.
00:16Desi Bakes, what up, though, man?
00:18What's up, baby? How you feeling, man?
00:19Cold, bro. Welcome to the city, though.
00:20Oh, yes, it is cold. And it's that cold that make your face ugly.
00:23You be thinking something stink, but you just cold. You just cold.
00:26You was at the Lions game last night, man. Did you enjoy it?
00:28Yes, I did. My first time ever going to a Lions game. The energy was crazy.
00:32And they got a dub. They got a dub.
00:34It might be the good luck time, bro, because we was playing bad for a little bit.
00:37As we pull up, we get a dub.
00:38Come on, now. What y'all at? 9-3, 9-4?
00:418-5, I think it is.
00:42Oh, 8-5, okay. Well, y'all still there. Y'all good.
00:45But that was a big win for y'all.
00:46Definitely. And we played the Cowboys. Got to get them up out of here.
00:48Yeah, and that number's on the road, so y'all slow that road down.
00:51Yeah, yeah.
00:52So, you got a show tonight in the city, man. Where you going to be at?
00:55I'm the...
00:56Masonic Cathedral.
00:57Okay.
00:59I'm telling you, every time I say it, it just messes me up.
01:01It sounds like it's two theaters in one.
01:03It do. It does. That's a fact.
01:04Masonic Cathedral Theater tonight, yeah, at 7 p.m.
01:08Nice.
01:10This your, what, second, third time in the city?
01:12My second time at that spot, but, like, my third, fourth time in the city.
01:16When I first started here, I used to do shows at the Punchline.
01:19Got you.
01:20Yeah, way back.
01:21I don't know if I haven't been in there in a minute where the stage is literally right there by the people.
01:25Yeah, it's the same. It's the same.
01:26Yeah, that's, you know, when you're coming up, you got to tap into that room, man.
01:32That's where it started.
01:33So, yeah, I remember them days.
01:34You like doing the intimate rooms better or the bigger stages, man?
01:37I like both, but intimate rooms, it's more of a comedy style, comedy way, you know what I'm saying?
01:42You can find different things.
01:43You're working on jokes and stuff like that.
01:45So that process is always good to me, you know what I'm saying?
01:48There's more shows, too, so each show can, you know what I'm saying, you can try to do different things, you know what I'm saying, each show.
01:53Gotcha.
01:53You know, the theater shows, it's straight performance.
01:56It's straight, you know what I'm saying, the stuff that you worked on, you bringing it straight to the performance side,
02:01and now you're making it like it's the James Brown, the Temptation show or something like that, you know, they come up with their best dress on, you know what I'm saying?
02:07Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:08Stuff like that, so, yeah, it's a difference for sure, yeah.
02:11I don't think I've ever heard your story, man.
02:13How did you get into the comedy thing, bro, because I heard the football story that you was playing football.
02:18Yep, I played football.
02:19And then how did you go from football to the comedy?
02:21Oh, man, well, I started, of course, on social media back in 2012.
02:25That's when Vine was here, you know what I'm saying?
02:28And fast forward, I was playing college ball then.
02:31I did two years at Moorhead, and I finished playing at Georgia State.
02:34But, you know, growing up as a kid, man, you know, comedy had been a part of my life for a long time.
02:39You know, I used to watch people like Eddie Murphy growing up, you know.
02:42Another Professor to this day had my favorite movie.
02:45Used to watch Martin all the time.
02:47Was that kid, you know what I'm saying, in school that used to win most humorous, you know, be a part of talent shows, acting on movie scenes and stuff like that.
02:54Even when I played sports, I was the funny guy on the team.
02:57You know, comedy is just that thing that was a part of me.
02:59I didn't know I was going to be doing it until I actually start, like, really taking it seriously, you know what I'm saying?
03:04Of course, I had a friend who introduced me to Vine, like, yo, bro, you need to start doing these videos, like, you funny, da-da-da.
03:09And I used to have people all the time tell me, like, yo, man, you funny if you don't make it to the league, bro, you need to do stand-up, you need to do this.
03:16You know, when I was a kid, I used to do prank calls on people.
03:18I used to do a lot of different things that I didn't know that I was going to be doing in real life right now.
03:23Because, like I said, man, sports was like that thing that I wanted to do, and I didn't see nothing else until I really tapped into it.
03:29And I really found my purpose in it, and I really saw what everybody saw in me already in the past.
03:35And I saw what my family was doing when they was putting me in front of that TV.
03:39I don't even think they know what they were doing.
03:40They probably was fans of those people, too, but not knowing that they was pouring that into me to be the person that God created me to be in this world right now.
03:47So, you know, it's been an amazing, growing journey, you know what I'm saying?
03:54You know, where I'm at right now to where I was, bro, it's totally different, especially stepping into the stand-up world.
04:01This is my 10th year stand-up right now, which is a beautiful thing.
04:06You know, my biggest goal, my main goal is TV and film, and I done produced a lot of different short films, web series on my own for my production company that's on YouTube right now that a lot of people done seen.
04:15That's being transitioned to feature films now that a lot of production people in Hollywood want to be a part of.
04:22Man, I got my own sitcom that's in works right now with BET and Paramount.
04:27Nice, I heard about that, man.
04:28So, you know, we getting ready for that 2026, and I'm ready for the people to see that, man.
04:34But just that new thing, you know, for this world, man, I want to be that new thing that our generation need, you know what I'm saying?
04:40A lot of the legends done did their thing, from the Mike Epps to the Kevin Hart to the Eddie Murphys to the Martins, the Jamie Foxx.
04:45All those people did their thing now.
04:46It's time for the new, man, and I want to be that new thing, you know, for our generation.
04:50You know, I want to create that show where, you know, it's like a Martin where you can watch it 10 years from now and still laugh at it like it's your first time, you know what I'm saying?
04:57I want to create that Friday movie where you got all those quotables.
05:00I want to create that all about the Benjamins, that Friday at the next, that next Friday.
05:04You know, those movies that we need, Harlem Nights and stuff like that, I want to be what they was, you know, for my generation so we can have that.
05:11You know, I love comedy, and I want comedy to be that thing that way.
05:15You know, I'm a student of all those people.
05:18And, you know, the more you study the greats, it's like they're giving you the recipe, you know.
05:23Right.
05:23You know, they're giving you the answer to the test.
05:25It's like you just got to, you know, study it.
05:27And, you know, as you study it, you go put in that work just like how they did.
05:31And, you know, you become, you know, what they become, you know.
05:34So.
05:35What was the piece of advice that you got from a legend?
05:37Like, I see you was with Eddie Murphy one time.
05:39I see you ran into, I think it was Martin Lawrence before.
05:42What was something that one of them or somebody, Mike Epps, told you about comedy that you was like,
05:47all right, put that to work on?
05:48Oh, yeah, I did shows with Mike, a few shows with Mike.
05:53I did shows with Martin, man.
05:54But I think Mike probably gave me, like, the best.
05:56I remember the last show I did with him, he was just like, man, keep being yourself and don't change.
06:02Because, you know, the industry can change you.
06:04You know, as you go higher, people become something totally different than what they was when they started.
06:09You know what I'm saying?
06:10And that kept me rooted.
06:12And, you know, if you keep God in it, bro, you're going to remain yourself.
06:15If you don't, you're going to lose yourself and the world is going to see it.
06:18And he's going to be like, oh, no, that ain't the person that I know.
06:21You know, it ain't going to be original.
06:22You know, it's not going to be authentic.
06:24But I think that was one of the biggest things that stuck with me.
06:27And, you know, even Martin said, hey, man, I always keep God with you no matter what.
06:30You know what I'm saying?
06:31So that's always been a thing for me.
06:35You know what I'm saying?
06:35That's what keeps me going.
06:36That's what keeps me, you know, even when it's times of days I feel like, you know, stuff not working the way I wanted to work.
06:42It's like, you know, I can go to God and, you know, when it's good and boom, something happens and it's like, oh, wow, you know what I'm saying?
06:47Yeah, yeah.
06:47And, you know, God just be preparing you for different things, man, different levels.
06:49He already know what you want.
06:50You know what I'm saying?
06:51So he just taking you through this ride.
06:53So when you do get it, you're going to be ready for it.
06:54You know what I'm saying?
06:55It's going to last, you know?
06:57That's what's up, man.
06:58That's beautiful.
06:59Last time you was here, either the time before that or last time you was here, you brought Jack Funny out on the stage.
07:04Yeah, my dog, yeah, funny dude, bro.
07:06Funny dude, man, shout out to Jack Funny.
07:08Yeah, he's new, he's up and coming.
07:10Yeah, like I seen him when he kind of like first started, bro, and yeah, me and my boy, we was like, yeah, he going to be something.
07:17Why was it important for you to pull a younger, or become a comedian on stage and give him that little five minutes, man?
07:23Because that probably meant a lot to him, bro.
07:24Because, hey, man, that's what they did to me, you know what I'm saying?
07:26And me personally, I feel like, you know, that's what separates your career.
07:30That's what's going to take you to another level.
07:32You know, the social media stuff is great, but, you know, when it comes to like that real comedy world, that real comedy space, getting into that area, you know, of the Hollywood and, you know, the movies and stuff like that, that's still a thing that I feel like a lot of social media comedians should tap into.
07:46You know what I'm saying?
07:47It gives you that longevity.
07:48It gives you that respect.
07:49It puts you in a room with those guys.
07:51You know what I'm saying?
07:52It allows you to meet people like the Eddie Murphys, the Martin, be a part of the Martin Lawrence show.
07:57Like, I did a show.
07:58I did shows with Martin Lawrence.
07:59You know what I'm saying?
08:00Like, that's crazy.
08:01I'm one of the features for Martin Lawrence.
08:03You know, it puts you in that real world.
08:06You know what I'm saying?
08:07It takes your stock to a whole other space.
08:10You know what I'm saying?
08:10That's the purpose.
08:11That's the inspiration that, you know, the younger generation want to see.
08:14Yeah.
08:15And, you know, that's why I feel like, you know, he got it.
08:18He got the natural ability.
08:20He's natural.
08:21You know what I'm saying?
08:22So, it's like, yo, bro, hey, you could do it, bro.
08:25You know, and he wanted to do it.
08:26So, I was like, oh, yeah, go ahead.
08:27Nice.
08:28Yeah.
08:28So, a lot of criticism that comedians like yourself and Adrewski get is because y'all do skits.
08:35And then going from the skits to the stage.
08:37And see, sometimes it don't translate.
08:39Was that difficult for you to go from the skits to the stage?
08:41Or what did you have to learn in that process to be like, okay, I can do both, y'all.
08:45Stop playing with me.
08:46I mean, like I said, I'm on year 10.
08:51So, yeah.
08:52It's been 10 years, doesn't it?
08:53It's crazy, right?
08:54Damn.
08:55A lot of people don't know that.
08:56Yeah.
08:57You see what I'm saying?
08:58Yeah, 10 years.
08:59Yeah, this is year 10.
09:01Wow.
09:02That's crazy.
09:03First of all, congratulations, bro, because everybody knows that's my story.
09:05I appreciate it.
09:06Yeah, when I first came here, like I said, I did the punchline.
09:09That was probably like eight years ago.
09:12Oh, yeah.
09:13Wow.
09:13Yeah.
09:14You know what I'm saying?
09:15Yeah, that is, yeah, 10 years.
09:16Damn.
09:17That was quick.
09:17Crazy.
09:18You know what I'm saying?
09:20But, yeah, my beginning transitions was when I first started doing it.
09:24Now, it was my best.
09:25I had to learn.
09:26Right.
09:26You know, I had to fail.
09:28I had to not get last.
09:30I had to, you know, but you got to want to go through that.
09:32That's a space that a lot of people don't want to go through.
09:34You got to really build a set, especially when you're growing to be a headliner.
09:38You got to have 50 minutes to an hour, you know what I'm saying, to entertain a crowd.
09:42You got to have that.
09:43But that's just you.
09:44Oh, my God.
09:44And it takes reps.
09:46It takes time.
09:47It takes being in the company club a whole weekend.
09:50It takes you doing seven to ten shows a weekend to rep your stuff, to find what works and what
09:56don't work.
09:57Like, that is a real thing.
09:59It's going to be dead moments.
10:00It's going to be moments you get.
10:01Like, it's work.
10:04Like, you got to want to go through that work.
10:06It's like a boxer training that whole six months before the fight.
10:11Like, he got to do all that.
10:12He got to watch film.
10:13He got to study that opponent.
10:15He got to do all these things.
10:16He got to learn how to take this punch.
10:17Like, oh, this person threw this uppercut.
10:19You got to take that.
10:20Even though you don't want to.
10:21You got to take it.
10:21You know what I'm saying?
10:22You got to get used to it.
10:23You got to get your chin ready.
10:24You got to.
10:24You know, it's that.
10:26You know what I'm saying?
10:27A lot of people, I feel like, they don't want to go through that.
10:30That's why I respect the OG so much.
10:33Just think.
10:33They didn't have social media.
10:35They didn't have that.
10:37All the thing they had was that.
10:38That's all they had to do.
10:39They couldn't do nothing else.
10:42But go to that comedy club and hope to get a chance on stage.
10:46You know what I'm saying?
10:47Right, right.
10:47Had to fail.
10:48Man.
10:48Yeah, yeah.
10:49Man.
10:49You know what I'm saying?
10:50Just imagine you failed and the owner would be like, well, no.
10:53You can't come back.
10:55Yeah, it got it.
10:55Now you got to go down the street to try to get on stage.
10:58You know what I'm saying?
10:58So, yeah.
11:00You know, it just take that work, man.
11:02And still to this day, we just did seven shows in Dallas last weekend.
11:09I did it because I wanted to work on stuff.
11:12I wanted to rep stuff.
11:13You know what I'm saying?
11:13I needed it.
11:14So, you know, and it worked out great.
11:16You know what I'm saying?
11:17But those times you have to take.
11:18You know what I'm saying?
11:19Being a comedian, you have to book more shows so you can put work in.
11:22You know how to write jokes or you just freestyle when you get up there?
11:24Yeah, I write jokes.
11:25Okay, okay.
11:26Yeah.
11:26And I got a team around me that we come together and write stuff.
11:28And, you know, a lot of stuff come out when I'm on stage.
11:31Like, a lot of, you know.
11:32You do a lot of crowd work, I see.
11:33I do crowd work.
11:35But a lot of jokes come out of that.
11:36And, you know.
11:37Got you.
11:37Yeah.
11:38So, yeah.
11:39All right.
11:40Your TV show.
11:41Can you talk about it a little bit or no?
11:42It's still under.
11:42So, it's going to be my own Martin.
11:46I'm going to be playing different character.
11:47I'm glad you said that.
11:48Yeah, my own Martin.
11:49The culture has been crowning you the new Martin.
11:51I don't know if you've seen that.
11:52But you, B. Simone, and I think her name is Candace.
11:55Oh, yeah.
11:55Candace.
11:56Yeah, when y'all was doing y'all series in the car and everything like that, it gave people that nostalgic Martin feel.
12:01You and B. Simone's chemistry was so, like, natural, bro.
12:04So, it's only right that you got a TV.
12:06So, I'm glad that it finally happened for you.
12:07Yes, sir.
12:08How does it feel, bro?
12:09Like, can you talk to us a little bit about that?
12:11Is B. Simone in it or who's in it?
12:12Can you talk about anything like that?
12:13Well, as far as the casting, we haven't, like, officially, like, put the casting in or whatnot.
12:19But, um, it feels, it feels, oh, man, it feels, it feels great.
12:26Like, like I said, like, even what you're saying, you see us in the car, right?
12:31Mm-hmm.
12:32But that was always the vision that I wanted to create.
12:36That was always the thing.
12:37Like, even with that, I used to create little, like, short films to present, you know what I'm saying, to the world, to let them know this is what I want to do.
12:45Like, I did those videos probably 10 years ago.
12:50But just look how long it took for the world.
12:52You got to question that 10 years, bro, because that don't sound like 10 years, but it is.
12:56It's crazy, right?
12:57But go ahead, my bad.
12:58Yeah, but, um, but me creating that, look how long it took for the world, like, to see what I was creating.
13:07And now I just can't wait to see, like, for the world to see it on TV.
13:11And then once it's there, people are going to think, oh, he just did this.
13:16Man, I want you to go back on my YouTube and watch all the stuff that I created before from my characters, from it was, I was already, like, writing it out.
13:25I already had the vision.
13:27Like, when I was doing my stuff, it wasn't just to do it, just to do it.
13:30Right.
13:30I didn't want to stay on social media.
13:31Like, I wanted to go to TV.
13:33I wanted to go to movies.
13:34Yeah, yeah.
13:34I wanted to go to, like, I wanted to do it like the real people did it.
13:37But, you know, like I said, God was preparing me in this space, so thank God for social media.
13:42He was preparing me in that space, getting my chops ready, getting myself ready, putting me into acting class, you know what I'm saying?
13:48Put me into that world until he felt like, all right, cool, let's go.
13:51And then the whole process of even doing that, like, you know, we did it the OG way.
13:56We actually had to go inside and pitch the show and act the show out in front of these people.
14:01We went to, like, 10 or 15 different networks.
14:03Were you nervous?
14:04Of course.
14:05Yeah.
14:05Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
14:07Like, yeah, I was nervous.
14:09I didn't know what these, you know, these people was going to say.
14:11You know what I'm saying?
14:12It was people that, you know, you had people that was not into it.
14:15You had people that loved it, wanted to get back.
14:17And you had people that wanted to buy it in the room.
14:20You know what I'm saying?
14:21And that was, that was like, you know, we was there for like, what, two days?
14:26Like, two days.
14:27We did probably seven one day and eight the next day.
14:31And, you know what I'm saying?
14:32So, like, what is that, bro?
14:34Because, like, are they, like, taking notes, telling you, like, this is good, get rid of this?
14:38Or is it just, like, you just doing it?
14:38So, basically, they hearing your idea out of what you're trying to pitch.
14:42You know, they looking for shows.
14:43They looking for something that's good for their network.
14:45But it's like, is your show going to be the show that they want?
14:48You know what I'm saying?
14:48And sometimes, bro, it's hard to, like, to sell a sitcom in a room.
14:54That's hard.
14:56That is so hard, bro.
14:57It ain't a movie.
14:58Right.
14:58It's an episodic show that's going to be, you know what I'm saying, played every week.
15:03You know?
15:03So, for us to be able to go into them rooms and excite these people and make them agree to our idea and really see the vision.
15:12And now we're in the process of, like, we're, like, the script, like, the first pilot is done.
15:18I can say that.
15:20We're just in the process of just punching it, making sure it's good.
15:25So, once it's boom, it's time to shoot it.
15:29Well, I go to traditional, right, the TV networks and everybody's doing social media.
15:32They're going to YouTube.
15:33They're going to TikTok, Tubi, all this other type of stuff.
15:36He was like, I'm going to take mine.
15:37Because I think, what's his name?
15:38Kev on stage.
15:39Yeah.
15:39He got the little thing.
15:40I don't call it a little thing.
15:40But he's got the series on Tubi right now.
15:43Yeah, yeah.
15:44It's with BET, though.
15:45Oh, it is with BET?
15:46Okay, I didn't know that.
15:46Yep, it's with BET.
15:48I think he probably, after he did it with BET, now, he probably sold it to Tubi.
15:52Got you.
15:53He probably owned everything, too.
15:55But it's levels.
15:56It's still levels.
15:57Okay.
15:58All right.
15:58It's still levels.
15:59Yeah, yeah.
15:59Like, social media is social media.
16:00But it's still, trust me, you want to be able to do a movie with Michael B. Jordan.
16:05You want to be able to get up there with The Rock level.
16:07If you want to be able to get them Netflix movies, like, it's still there.
16:12And those are fans.
16:14Them are real hard fans.
16:15Them TV fans are totally different.
16:18Them people that's probably ain't even known on social media.
16:20Them people in the real world, they're in a real space.
16:22Hollywood is still a thing.
16:24You know what I'm saying?
16:24And I want to, that's a vision, that's a goal for me.
16:27I want to, hey, man, I want to inspire people to that level where they be like, man, this guy went from here to here.
16:33But he still kept his soul, though.
16:36He's still authentic.
16:37He's still real.
16:39He's still him.
16:40Yeah, yeah.
16:40You know what I'm saying?
16:41He still got there.
16:42You know, I want to be able to make them Rush Hour movies.
16:46Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:48It's still.
16:48I grew up on the Rush Hour.
16:49Yeah, yeah, yeah.
16:50It's different.
16:51It's a different audience.
16:52It's a different audience.
16:54And I want to be into that world.
16:56I want to be into that space and do it that way.
16:58Because if I didn't want to do that, I would have been created.
17:01I would have been made it.
17:02Got you.
17:02I would have been created that show already.
17:04I would have been shot in my movie.
17:06You know what I'm saying?
17:06You had a thing on YouTube, man.
17:08You and Drewski.
17:09What happened to that?
17:09The Hago Down the Hood.
17:10So that's going to become, that's becoming a movie.
17:13So we got Issa Rae.
17:14Yeah.
17:14It's a feature film.
17:16Yeah, so we got Issa Rae's team looking into that.
17:19So they like that.
17:20So that script is done as well.
17:21We're just going back and forth.
17:22You working, dog.
17:23Yeah.
17:24Wait.
17:24See, stuff like that, it just take time.
17:26It's just a different type of process.
17:28Like, you know, I just say what?
17:30Richard Pryor didn't get his first movie until he was like 37.
17:33You know what I'm saying?
17:34Bernie Mac didn't get his show until he was like 42.
17:36You know what I'm saying?
17:38These are legends, but these people have been doing it for a long time.
17:40But it's just, bro, it's just, this side is just, it's so different.
17:44It's just different.
17:45But when it happened, man, it looked, social media makes stuff look like it's forever.
17:50Yeah.
17:51Or quick, bro.
17:52Or quick.
17:53I think that's the thing, too.
17:54It looked like it just happened yesterday.
17:56Exactly.
17:57Like you said, 10 years.
17:58Yeah.
17:58And still going.

18:10If I would have had time, I probably went to Motown.
18:13Mm-hmm.
18:14I always do that.
18:16What else do I do here?
18:17This is my first time going to the Lions game, which was dope.
18:20Um, food is always good.
18:23Where you go eat that, bro?
18:25You be in the Coney's?
18:26Yeah, I do.
