00:13now been uh in progress since since 2021 and you know what mason august is black business month
00:20oh is it yes it is that i didn't know yes uh they uh well i saw this in a

00:27detroit is like the blackest yes city in america yeah we are yes we are it's amazing it used to
00:36you
00:36know because it used to roll with dc and atlanta not anymore man now detroit is is is back there
00:44and and that is from black businesses and black government absolutely uh uh heads of black that's
00:51government and heads of black business yes absolutely which has given us that that um
00:57distinguished honor it is uh how was the week for you good it was a really good week i'm excited
01:05about august it's the opportunity to be loud and proud and celebrate black businesses which is
01:11something we do 365 days in a year but i'm really excited about this month what is there anything
01:16we should know that's coming up well i mean i would say for now i think that we you know
01:22we do
01:22our uh member meeting first first wednesday of every month because i i just i could hear somebody
01:28say makes i got this little business yeah can i be a part of that group absolutely so look we

01:35at 28 west adams every day our office is downtown 28 west adams suite 800 you can come in any

01:42nine to five and someone is there will help you get signed up uh to join the black business alliance
01:46uh we had an amazing event we on friday we talked to the the president and i know you will
01:52appreciate
01:53this of business operations for the detroit pistons black woman melanie harris oh yeah miss harris
01:58yeah we had which technically is my boss yeah that's exactly right and the pistons have been a strong
02:04partner of the black business alliance since we started so we're always doing amazing things with
02:09our members um but yeah i mean just folks can just come down i mean it's we're there helping
02:14uh black businesses every day you brought a guest with you today i did i'm gonna go ahead and let
02:19her introduce herself hi everybody thank you for having me here mason she's good um my name is john
02:26a and i own blossom bright candle company i've been doing this since 2018 and we make health conscious
02:31soy candles to help you light up a room light up your spirit help you rejuvenate
02:35eyes clever uh why the candle business for you and and and before you tell me that what high school
02:42did you go to um i graduated from cashek high school oh you're a technician that is great
02:50that is great yes sir um when you were at cashek did you participate in any classes that
02:59lean toward business i did not i originally was interested in journalism so i've always been
03:05big on writing and being creative wow but this business does allow me to still do that
03:11how did the light come on to do this i just grew up in a household where aromatherapy was a
03:19thing like
03:19my mom always liked to relax light a candle and kind of unwind so i kind of grew up in
03:24that type of environment
03:25yes um how do you what candle do you recommend for like the living room or just general room
03:41for people to walk in and you know what are the rules can i just keep it on all the
03:45time
03:45and kind of catch somebody's i would recommend pineapple sage it's one of our best sellers
03:51pineapple sage pass it on down here let me smell it baby yeah so that's why why janae do you
03:59recommend pineapple sage just because when you when you walk into the room it's gonna immediately
04:04hit you oh yes oh this is good oh yes yeah um yeah that's good that has to be a
04:12tough business
04:13to be in it is because the market is very saturated um so you have to go out of your
04:21way to stand out
04:22um so when i come up with my candle names i think of how it will make you feel or
04:27how the scent itself
04:28will make you feel so like vacation is calling it's like a spa scent so it just makes you feel
04:35like you
04:35want to be on a beach somewhere you want to go to a massage parlor and just relax oh you
04:40knocked it
04:40you knocked this out the park girl oh i gotta smell this one too andy hold on vacation is calling
04:47right now and it's calling for me wow i need a vacation you said something that's very powerful
04:55as a business person you said the market is saturated so therefore you have to go out of
05:03your way yes well how did you determine that did you obviously you knew the the market was
05:12fairly full when you entered but you still wanted to get into it yes i really didn't know i just
05:19i
05:20did research before i started the business but i didn't know just how saturated it was but the
05:25important thing for me was to always just put myself out there um and put myself in the business
05:30and make people feel who i am so that's why i come up with catchy names and i want people
05:35to
05:35relate to me not just the candle itself they are actually hands up approving everything you tell
05:43them to smell you said vacation i'm like not in the studio right now how did you come up with
05:51that
05:51and why is it different the name of the candle itself everything why'd you come up with it and the
05:59name yes um well the name of the candle i want people to feel what the candle makes you feel
06:06so
06:06that's a way that i come up with the names a feeling do you do the name first or the
06:12product
06:12oh that's a good the scent itself i source the scent first and then i go off of that to
06:19come up with the
06:20name it's like it's it's what it's the formula people use for making music yeah it still allows
06:28me to be creative in a way so michael jackson said
06:35first i i gotta do the beat then i'll i'll come up with the name of the song and all
06:44of that
06:44yeah but first i gotta feel the beat you have to make the product first and then you can create
06:54the name yes because it comes with feeling like when you light a candle when you're relaxing
07:01either you're relaxing you're thinking about something you're in a space where you want your
07:06mind to be clear so it comes with a lot of feeling a lot of intention is attached to that
07:11we experience
07:12life through scent i don't know if anybody has everybody in here has a grandmother you can remember
07:17her favorite perfume we all experience life through our senses so that's why i say is is the feeling
07:24it was the person who told you no and you damn near believed them and started to quit
07:30who was that or why was that nobody ever told me that i've always had a good support system my
07:38family always made me feel like i could do anything um even the name blossom bright itself comes from
07:44the desire to grow the desire to shine through everything in life um well then did it ever get
07:51too hard and you go you know what this is nice i love doing it but i ain't gonna make
07:57no way doing
07:58this yes i have those moments all the time but um then how do you get through that god put
08:04this in
08:04my heart he put it in my heart the idea just came out of nowhere and i just feel like
08:08ideas are little
08:09snippets from god um so that keeps me going um like i said i have a strong support system as
08:16well
08:16um even just starting a business i had a good support system i was able to get my brand and
08:21seven local retailers within a three-year span wow so i always was just how did you do that going
08:28going going out of your way going there telling them about my product letting them smell it telling
08:34them my story and everybody resonated with it um so yeah that's great yes you um been in business
08:44again how long since 2018 since 18 okay um how did you meet attorney charity d um i actually i'm

08:53part of uh michigan black business alliance um and i actually met her at rosa i happened to be doing
09:00a residency there i was teaching some candle classes um and she walked in one day and i ended up
09:05meeting
09:05her that way you teach as well i teach candle making classes wow i love that okay that's great i
09:14like that
09:14yes yes how how many fragrances candle fragrances do you have um year round about 10 fragrances i also
09:25can do custom fragrances i also do seasonal fragrances how does one get in touch with you
