00:00That is a picture-perfect postcard
00:12It's paradise paradise on earth
00:17Huge difference in color from the Pacific to the Caribbean Caribbean ocean is just unmatched
00:23Are there sharks in these woods?
00:30Bocas del Toro an archipelago of tropical islands along the northwest coast of Panama
00:36Ranging from uninhabited natural wonders to the colorful stilted clapboard houses of Bocas town
00:44This has been a proper vengeance story. I think we've seen that growth to first
00:48We were in total shock. Yeah
00:54Competition in the penultimate leg of the race promises to be tight as just 43 minutes
00:59Separates the top three teams and for the first time
01:03Dillon and Jackie sit in pole position don't slip up. You've got the pressure of leading the pack now
01:08I don't like it. We don't want pressure
01:11crumble we crumble
01:12Still after that first place at one point. I've had dreams where I'm like we come first and like shoving the knees from
01:19Bound that out of here
01:20Come on
01:21The first, come on
01:23When we first met Dillon he was a different person to who he is now
01:27Now I feel like he's grown into himself throughout this journey
01:30And now I'm ready to beat him
01:32I was quite gutted when we opened the book
01:36No, you were fuming
01:37I was I was pretty I was pretty mad because I felt like we've done so well
01:43How would the top two become the bottom two character building
01:48I think we felt sorry for her
01:52We're not too far behind
01:54We know our strengths and when we start moving way we move we move four legs in
01:59Everyone is hot on it now. Yeah, like everybody's found their river
02:03Obviously we finished last
02:05But it's all to play for every man for themselves on this one
02:10You thought we were racing before oh, we're on it. We're changing gear. It's gear five now two legs to go. Yeah, we race
02:27What day
02:29I
02:32630 a.m
02:34First to leave the checkpoint
02:36Wednesdays
02:36Yeah, thank you
02:37Race leaders Dillon and Jackie
02:40Ready? Ready
02:42Your fifth checkpoint is
02:44Medellin
02:45I swear that's Colombia
02:47I think I've seen it in like a Pablo Escobar series
02:50Oh really? I think
02:52Over 1300 kilometers away
02:54Colombia's second largest city Medellin
02:57Sprawls across the abura valley in the northern end of the andes mountain range
03:04As the epicenter of Pablo Escobar's drug cartel it was once labeled the murder capital of the world
03:10But now it's a safer and vibrant metropolis
03:17Oh, okay all teams have to bypass the darien gap
03:23By water
03:24For safety reasons this journey has to be in daylight hours
03:28Darien gap
03:29I've heard that it can be a bit dangerous
03:32The notorious and perilous darien gap
03:35The only land connection between central and south america
03:39But no roads run through its dense jungle and vast swamps
03:43For tens of thousands of migrants each year this treacherous expanse much of it controlled by criminal gangs is their only route north
03:54To reach colombia the teams have one option to travel by sea
03:59But first a chance to explore panama
04:05panama's quite funny shape it's kind of like a like a goose neck there seems to be a main road going through
04:10Yeah, yeah
04:12They may be tempted to grab opportunities in the west
04:17With its allure of well-paid work and hidden natural beauty
04:22Or the adventurers could make a beeline for the east coast
04:25And the secluded turquoise ringed islands of guna yala
04:29Also known as sandblas an autonomous territory home to the indigenous guna people
04:34On the last leg just being in nature and gave me a sense of calm and it would be nice to have a nature feast again
04:44Definitely something like hot water springs
04:46Yeah waterfalls
04:48Yeah, yeah, that'd be amazing
04:49So if we go south maybe
04:51Buquette there might be like something around there
04:54Yeah
04:54And then follow this big road through to panama city. Yeah
04:59It's also very difficult to judge whether we have enough money for the whole trip or not
05:04We've hemorrhaged a bit. Yeah
05:07With budgets dwindling dylan and jackie have the least amount of money to tackle the longest leg of the race so far
05:15It's just the unknowns of of these these countries we don't know
05:19But this is our penultimate leg
05:21So I want us to stand in good stead for the last leg by saving in this leg
05:28Here we go. Hola. Hola
05:31To continue their journey teams need to get off the islands of bocas del toro
05:36Boats depart regularly to almirante the closest mainland port where they can pick up onward transport
05:42We need to get to buquette
05:45Right now it's the actual
05:47Put a boat to the main island and then bus shorter to buquette
05:51Would it not be quicker for us to get boat now to almirante and there's any almirante travel to buquette sooner?
05:59It's possible but it's more expensive
06:01I recommend you go street to buquette or buquette
06:04Okay, so shall we book it?
06:06Yeah, let's book it 30 each. Yeah, rather than risk finding a connection in the port of almirante
06:12dylan and jackie opt for a package deal transfer of boat and bus to boquette in the western highlands
06:20We could get a quicker ferry but then it's a bit risky juggling buses
06:24Which are not that regular over there from what I can gather also it might be more expensive that rain as well
06:29So it makes more sense to wait for three hours. I think it's smart to save money. We could speed up later
06:37While the leaders sit tight
06:40That's where we're headed
06:43Having departed half an hour behind them and now on their tails siblings roman and harley moon
06:49This is our last time for a proper like cultural adventure. Do you know what I mean? Yeah
06:54Roman found the first few legs quite stressful and I really felt like I had to look after him a lot
06:59But on the last leg he's been quite calm. So I hope he
07:04Realises it is fun as well. We're gonna have to get the boat from panama. So
07:10Mandigua is a tiny island in the direction of colombia, which is good. Yeah
07:15It is home to a single
07:17Goona family. I mean the only thing is is I'm an arsenal fan. I like Gooners
07:21I think we can live in our own bubble at times and traveling somewhere and seeing what their version of life is
07:29I think it offers
07:30Perspective the faster we can get to panama city the better
07:35Seeking and off the beaten track experience while staying race focused
07:40Roman and harley moon plan to head via panama city straight to gunayala
07:44Ali look jackie and dylan we see them. Yeah, so what's the fastest way to panama city? Yeah
07:54I was hoping not to see another team. Yeah
07:56So our best bet is to get to almirante. Yes, and then get the bus to panama. Yeah
08:02Let's just get off this island. We got two tickets
08:08They're getting on the boat
08:11I don't think we should be stressed by it. Yeah, we shouldn't sweat about that
08:16Why are they not getting on this boat off the island? I can still see them. Why are they not getting off? Give them away
08:23Poodles
08:25Bye
08:26Adios Roman and Harley
08:28We'll see you in Median
08:31I hope
08:32Technically that was like we're ahead of the team at first. Yeah
08:36Here we go router mass rapid up
08:39Got it. Yep one two three
08:41As the siblings make a quick getaway
08:45Just 12 minutes behind them. So my instinct is
08:49We take a job. Anita and bal eager to find ways to preserve their budget
08:54Worker shift at rocks is in boca chica down here. Yeah, and
08:59Then you're by the main roads to get to panama city
09:02panama is mega bucks
09:05And so saving money is definitely part of the strategy because we know we're going to probably need as much as we can for when we get
09:11to colombia
09:12anita's plan
09:14Working at a b&b to save an accommodation in the cherokee province en route to the capital
09:20almirante
09:21muchas gracias
09:28The first team to arrive on the mainland
09:33Roman and harley moon searching for a bus straight to panama city
09:37Six p.m
09:39Six p.m
09:40Six p.m
09:41Yes
09:42It's direct
09:42Is direct
09:43La otra ruta es de David
09:45David
09:46Canama
09:46Eh
09:48Que hora
09:48Aquí
09:49David
09:50Ah
09:50Yes
09:51Okay
09:53That's a bus
09:54Shall we get that
09:55We can't wait till 60
09:56Yeah
09:57Yeah, let's do it. Yeah.
09:59With no direct bus departure for seven and a half hours,
10:03the siblings head to a nearby transport hub
10:05in search of an earlier connection.
10:07Come on, David, my sweetheart.
10:09Give us some luck. Give us some faith.
10:13Do you reckon Dylan and Jackie made it off the island yet?
10:18Do-do-do-do.
10:21Having finally reached Almirante port by boat,
10:24mother and son are still waiting
10:27for their bus to depart for Bocchetti.
10:29Where are you guys from?
10:30Like, London area? Yeah. Like, England? Yeah, yeah.
10:33Cool. In Medellin, we did the boat to San Blas.
10:37Don't do it like that, OK?
10:38The waves were, like, three metres tall.
10:41Oh, my gosh. People were crying, dogs were barking.
10:44No!
10:45People were growing up.
10:46It was intense.
10:48We're going to Colombia. We might be doing that.
10:52Yeah, thank you, and you enjoy as well.
10:54Yeah.
10:55Yeah.
10:57I was crying, she said.
10:59Yeah.
11:00Oh, God.
11:05Right now, the buses are ready.
11:07OK.
11:07This way, please follow.
11:09Gracias.
11:10So we got going almost six hours ago.
11:12Yeah, slow stop.
11:14Makes you wonder whether where we're going is a bit in the middle of nowhere.
11:17That's why there's not such a regular bus service.
11:22Hopefully, we can make up the ground and finish strong.
11:25We'll stay positive.
11:26Yeah.
11:26We'll stay positive.
11:28How are you doing, sir?
11:30You OK to take us to the terminal?
11:31Yeah.
11:31Excellent.
11:33Just arriving off the boat into Almirante, Molly and Tyler.
11:37Swift start.
11:39With a seven-hour gap to close, they're on a dash to the bus station.
11:42Hopefully, get an overnight bus.
11:45To Panama City.
11:46To Panama City.
11:47And then grab a boat into Colombia.
11:49Yeah.
11:50Is there a direct bus to Panama City?
11:53Let me see.
11:54It's in my space.
11:56Oh.
11:57Thank you, ma'am.
11:58Who's going to check if there's space on the bus?
12:00That's great.
12:02Yeah, I have space to Panama Direct.
12:04From here?
12:04Yes, from here.
12:05Oh, man.
12:06Yeah, you have luck.
12:08That bus reaching about 5 o'clock in the morning.
12:10Yeah, perfect.
12:11Yeah, perfect.
12:11Yeah, perfect.
12:12Yeah, amazing.
12:15This is good.
12:17This is awesome, ma'am.
12:19You are the best, man.
12:22Thank you, sir.
12:2311 hours of travel over halfway across the country, and it's a night's accommodation.
12:29There you go.
12:30Get the bus.
12:31Get the bus.
12:35Yes.
12:36This is going to help us catch up majorly to the other teams.
12:40This is the redemption leg for us.
12:43This is catch-up leg.
12:44Yeah.
12:45Taking the bus Roman and Harley Moon passed on earlier,
12:48Molly and Tyler are making a 600-kilometre overnight leap to Panama City.
12:56I feel like tomorrow morning, this is basically like a level playing field.
13:00We need to just continue this energy.
13:02We can't take our foot off the gas.
13:06Look at the skyscrapers.
13:07First time we've seen skyscrapers this entire trip.
13:09After successfully securing a connection in David, the siblings are the first team into the capital.
13:15I'm quite impressed by Panama City.
13:17Yeah.
13:19Towering over the Pacific, the Wall Street of Central America, one of the region's wealthiest cities,
13:26it's become a magnet for millionaire migration.
13:28It really feels like we're in the U.S.
13:31I have a feeling it's going to be U.S. prices.
13:35In a way, you're a bit gutted to not spend time in a nice city, but on our budget...
13:40I don't think we can afford to stay here.
13:43Hola.
13:44Oh, lift.
13:46What?
13:47We haven't had a lift in ages.
13:49This is very modern.
13:51Oh, yeah.
13:52Electricity and everything.
13:54I feel quite good about our progress today.
13:55We've pretty much covered half of the country in a day.
14:00We're about to cross the Guni Yala.
14:03I don't know much about the Darien Gap, but it doesn't sound safe.
14:08There's moments in this race where we've both decided we will not tell our mum about it,
14:13and this might be one of those moments.
14:24It's got such a nice feeling about it here.
14:27You have holler monkeys every morning.
14:28You are here?
14:29Yes.
14:32Okay, coming this way.
14:34We have the guests today around here already.
14:36Ah, nice.
14:37If you can give me the hand and put those in the tables.
14:39For everybody?
14:40Same for everybody?
14:41Yes, exactly.
14:41450 kilometres west from Panama City, and sitting on the gulf of Chiriqui National Marine Park,
14:49the small fishing village of Boca Chica.
14:52This is going to be the best tour she's ever seen in life.
14:56Anita and Bal are working to pay off last night's accommodation at Roxy's B&B.
15:01This looks so delicious.
15:04Buenos dias.
15:05There we go.
15:07And one for the little board.
15:08Right.
15:09This is ready to go?
15:11Who hasn't had breakfast yet?
15:14You're emptying them?
15:15Yep.
15:16I'll wash them.
15:18Look at Dad.
15:18He's washing the dishes.
15:20He's really good at that.
15:21He's so cute.
15:22Oh, my God.
15:23We'll have these done in minutes.
15:25He's such a hard worker.
15:26I want to keep it longer.
15:29There we go.
15:30You were really helpful for us.
15:32I want to show you the area.
15:34That would be amazing.
15:35This village is just 200 people.
15:40I had the experience from Costa Rica that I used to run hotels.
15:45I'm like, I can't start a bed and breakfast by myself.
15:48My place is running by girls.
15:49All women.
15:50Just women.
15:51Wow.
15:52They have their own families, but no husbands.
15:54Single women.
15:55I told them, I can teach you something English.
15:57You can run a place with me together.
16:00We have to empower women in a small village like this.
16:02I just want them to know how valued they are.
16:06That is special for me.
16:07This is the dream, Roxy.
16:09You're amazing.
16:11I feel like I'm being told something myself, right?
16:14That there are things that I'd like to do.
16:20There's been a bit of a change in my life in the last couple of years.
16:24Come on, Dad.
16:24Let's have a little meander before we have to get on it again.
16:28Becoming single in my mid-40s is huge.
16:31A lovely cove.
16:33Wow.
16:34Not a soul here.
16:37Growing up, there was so much expectation that you must get married and have children.
16:42And so now, it's not just a process of letting go of a past life.
16:46It's also an embracing of a new one.
16:50I've been in a bit of a funk.
16:52But what I saw in Roxy is what I know I have in myself.
16:56Drive, tenacity.
16:58Master your strength.
16:59Before, there was always this pressure that I had to keep everyone happy.
17:05But now, this whole trip is making me think, there's so much that I want to do.
17:10It's like a sense of liberation, Dad.
17:12As a woman, but particularly as a South Asian woman, I really enjoy how powerful it feels to be able to choose to live the life I want to.
17:24And actually, I had my dad's support.
17:26Maybe I have sacrificed having a family, but I'm okay with that.
17:32And this trip has opened up my eyes about Ramon.
17:35About you, how you feel and how you think.
17:37Do you ever worry about me, Dad?
17:39We sometimes say, oh, who's she with? Is she by herself?
17:42Because she feels lonely.
17:44And that's why we sometimes phone you up and say, come on, sit with us.
17:47We don't want to feel lonely. That's all.
17:49I'm not lonely, so don't worry about me being lonely.
17:53I'm good. I'm very happy.
17:54Yeah, because you're sticking with me now.
17:55I know, Dad.
17:57This is incredible.
18:09We made it.
18:11Panama City, early doors.
18:14Arriving into the capital after their overnight bus, Molly and Tyler.
18:18We've had a toilet wash.
18:20Yes.
18:21We smell fresh-ish.
18:22We smell fresh-ish.
18:23And we need to find where we can get this ticket.
18:26To the Gunayala Islands.
18:28Yeah.
18:28The only way for tourists to get safely to Colombia without flying
18:32is to take a 4x4 transfer from the capital to the Panamanian coast,
18:37followed by a boat journey through Gunayala to the border.
18:42In here.
18:43Let's go.
18:46Hola.
18:47We're trying to cross-bird the Gunayala to get into Colombia.
18:51Habla ingles poquito.
18:53No.
18:53Le voy a dar un teléfono.
18:57Gracias.
18:59Hola.
18:59Hola.
19:00Hola.
19:01Can you please take us to Gunayala?
19:03Sure.
19:04Thank you very much.
19:05I can do that.
19:07And how much will it cost?
19:09A price?
19:10Yeah.
19:11It's $155 per person.
19:17$155 per person?
19:18Yeah.
19:19You pay me directly, $155 each.
19:23Okay.
19:23And that's the best price.
19:25That's the best price.
19:26Wow.
19:27That is absolutely spend dog.
19:32God.
19:34Right.
19:37My life savings have just gone.
19:38That is basically our whole leg budget.
19:46Yeah.
19:47That's the most expensive thing we've paid for.
19:50There's nothing we can do.
19:52Oh, we're such a curve for.
19:53I mean, thank God we saved, but we can spend that money.
19:57To reach the port, a 120-kilometre journey that winds around the sandblast mountains to the Guna coast.
20:11We are in the sticks, man.
20:15And there's nothing but jungle.
20:17Mm-hmm.
20:18It makes you think how hard it is to get to the border and the coast.
20:23What the Darien Gap is actually like and how it's so inaccessible.
20:27Yeah.
20:28Trying to go through this any other way would be a wild journey.
20:33There's just so much bush.
20:36This is boss-level winding road.
20:39This is Helter Skelter, Salt Park.
20:46Right.
20:47Don't be sick in the car, basically.
20:49Now he's said it.
20:50No, you don't, honey.
20:53Imagine what a ball, like, tarmac in this is.
20:57Let's go.
21:00Let's go.
21:01Oh.
21:06Are you the captain?
21:07Yeah.
21:08Captain.
21:09Oh, okay.
21:10This boat?
21:11Yeah.
21:12Oh.
21:14It's absolutely tiny.
21:16This boat is safe, right?
21:17Yeah.
21:18Is it fast boat?
21:19Yeah.
21:19Yeah.
21:19Excellent.
21:21That's what we need right now.
21:24Let's go to the island.
21:27Passage through the Gunayala is limited to daylight hours only.
21:31It's got a bit of oomph.
21:33Oh, my God.
21:34Thank God this seat's got a bit of cushion.
21:36Nighttime presents the danger of rough seas and shallow reefs, as well as an increased risk of cartel activity.
21:46This is the toughest journey at sea of the biggest waves I've ever seen in my life.
21:54Oh, Lord of mercy right now upon our souls.
22:00You have to have a strong stomach first.
22:03Whoa.
22:05It's proper pirate life, please.
22:07I thought we paid for a luxury cruise.
22:11Whoa.
22:14You okay?
22:15I'm a bit uneasy right now, I'd say.
22:18I'm not living my best life, you know?
22:21Oh, you'll be okay.
22:23I thought you were holding on to me, and I realised you were just holding the money belt.
22:27Yeah.
22:28Keep that precious.
22:29Fighting for my life against these waves, and you're worried about the bloody money belt.
22:34Whoa.
22:35This is proper adventure.
22:38Woo!
22:46Going at a less urgent pace...
22:49Oh, see that blue?
22:50Oh, my gosh, it's coming towards us.
22:52It's blue.
22:54Dylan and Jackie are exploring the highlands of western Panama.
23:00Holly and Roman are definitely ahead of us, but are they experiencing anything like this?
23:04We don't know.
23:06Hidden away deep in the cloud forest...
23:08Oh, wow.
23:10..the Haguata waterfall.
23:14Look at this guy.
23:16No way.
23:17Locals and travellers come to swim in its clear pools, and for the brave, the opportunity to jump from its eight-metre-high ledge.
23:26I'd be so scared.
23:27Dad would be straight in the water now.
23:30We'd make a big splash.
23:32Oh, my gosh.
23:36Let's go to the kiddie pool.
23:39That's more our speed.
23:40Well, that's divine.
23:41I feel like I'm close to heaven or something.
23:52I think through losses I have, I feel closer to them when I'm in those moments of serenity and beauty.
24:03That's amazing.
24:05When I was 22, I met my first husband.
24:08I was due to have James, my first son, on the 19th of December, and on the 21st of December, there was a knock at the door, and there was two fluorescent jackets.
24:23They said, we just want to let you know that your husband has been knocked over by a car and killed instantly.
24:35I had James, and I found it very difficult on my own.
24:42I eventually got my act together and got on in life and coped, and I met Barry, who I married.
24:50I've never swum near a waterfall before.
24:55It's so clear, the water.
24:57It is, isn't it?
25:00We had Cameron, and then ten and a half months later, Dylan came around, so I had three little boys under three.
25:07It was absolute chaos.
25:13Are you missing Dad?
25:14Yeah, I am.
25:15But I actually think Dad not being here has made me push the boundaries of me as a person and made me grow.
25:23Yeah.
25:23Because I've always relied on Dad to do things for me.
25:27Exactly.
25:27We've had our little moments of braveness on our own.
25:31It's cemented our bond even more, and we support each other with James and things, you know?
25:37And it's been tough.
25:41Losing two people very close in my life definitely has changed me as a person.
25:48When James had gone, I was internalising it, trying to be brave and put brave face on for boys.
25:54It took me a while to be strong again, but I've had to be strong as a mother to my boys.
26:04I just want to say thank you so much for everything, and it needs a lot.
26:08Of course I do.
26:09I just don't think about it.
26:11I just would always help you and love you and protect you.
26:15Yeah.
26:16And I want to protect you now, you know?
26:18I want to protect you and just, yeah, like, you deserve the world.
26:23You're the best mum, man.
26:25I don't think I'm the best mum.
26:26No, you are.
26:27You are.
26:29I'm really proud of the way you've grown up.
26:32And probably you don't need me anymore now.
26:35I know.
26:36I always need my mum.
26:38I always need mama.
26:44Oh, my gosh.
26:47That is the most beautiful sand I've ever seen in my life.
26:52After over an hour at sea, Molly and Tyler are making a pit stop.
26:57We've got to jump off on here.
26:59It's too special not to.
27:07Gunayala is made up of a narrow strip of shoreline on the fringes of the Darien Gap,
27:12as well as more than 350 islands in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean.
27:19How on earth did ants get here?
27:22That's crazy.
27:23They're so crafty.
27:26Babe, look at this.
27:28Oh, that's another level.
27:29Isn't it?
27:30Wow.
27:32Follow us.
27:34What?
27:35Oh, piss off.
27:36You idiot.
27:37You absolute idiot.
27:39After the Spanish colonised Colombia in the 1500s,
27:43the Guna population gradually migrated towards the Sandblast Islands,
27:48eventually renaming the region Gunayala.
27:51There are no luxury hotels or resorts,
27:54and outsiders are banned from owning property.
27:57I've literally never, ever in my life been somewhere this remote.
28:03I don't quite get it.
28:06Yeah.
28:07Roman and Harley Moon are docking on the 168-metre-long Mandingua Island.
28:14Let's go say hello.
28:15Wild.
28:16They're staying with the Tejada family,
28:19who have lived here for generations,
28:21along with their menagerie of dogs, chickens and pigs.
28:25Hola.
28:26Welcome to your house.
28:29Welcome to the order.
28:31Ah.
28:32What's your name?
28:34It's called Orion.
28:35Orion?
28:38And here is the name of Gunayala.
28:44Yes.
28:45Is it correct?
28:45Yes.
28:46Pardon me, for my Spanish.
28:48Gunayala is for us, Tules, or aborigines.
28:52Yeah.
28:52Yeah, yeah.
28:53is all of us on montaña personas unas unas unas en londres mi equipo fútbol nombre gunas
29:05mis familia es españa en inglés es
29:34mate mate mate I feel so far from home being on this island but it's nice to
29:43be in a family environment to be honest there's a wolf here W-S-Y-C
29:52Very good, muy bien, muy bien
29:54Hermana es el nombre, Harley Moon. Harley Moon. Harley Moon, si.
30:03I think I fall in very much in love with you pig. If I stay here for the rest of my
30:09life with this pig and Roman, we'd probably do okay.
30:16All right then. 35 kilometres ahead, Molly and Tyler are the closest team to
30:23Colombia but with boats restricted from travel after dark they're bedding down on
30:28Isla de Pinos. Sunset on an island. We've smashed it. It's actually blowing my mind
30:38that we've been travelling for 27 hours so it feels like a massive weight lifted to
30:44be on this island. Miles, they've got hammocks. Okay. Hola. Can we stay here? Yeah. Okay. Thank you.
30:56Well there's a touch. See this is, this is it. I can do this. This is vibes. This is true
31:04island living.
31:05What is that? Is that an ant? This is the first night I've ever spent in a hammock in my whole
31:20entire life. Molly's hammock is nicely protected with a mosquito net. My mosquito net is on me
31:26like it's my wedding day. There's no lights. There's no electricity. There's just the sounds
31:33of the waves and the sun that's going to wake us up. And that's quite actually special but scary at
31:37the same time. But this is the most we've ever felt alone. How are you doing Miles? Not great.
31:46Yeah. You're protected though, isn't it? Not really. Over on Mandingua Island.
31:59It looks harder than it looks. This has actually been a really special place for us to stop.
32:20There's not a TV. There's not a radio. It's just animals and family. I think coming to places
32:28like this are really good for people like me, you know, who sometimes can get lost in our
32:32own world. What's so funny is that you could feel like you're in the middle of nowhere but
32:37you'll still find siblings performing for guests. Yeah, we used to do it. It just reminds
32:43me of us singing Craig David. Doing dance routines, Shaggy wasn't me. Gracias, amigos.
32:58Hola. Gracias. Dylan and Jackie are the last team to depart Panama City
33:11for Colombia. Quanta Cuesta. $310. So, $155 each. $300. Yeah, OK. Well, we'll just have
33:23to play it. That's a lot of money. I'm kind of looking forward to leaving Panama now because
33:30of so much expenses. One step ahead of them, Anita and Bal. Ready to Pile. Setting off on
33:41a crossing that can take as long as eight hours. Whee! It's a little bumpy. A bit bumpy, yes.
33:48We've got very good fun. Well, we like roller coasters. We do love the roller coasters.
33:53In an ideal world, we get to checkpoint tonight. Yeah. Let's hope it's a quick, smooth trip. But
34:02I have no idea how long the journey is. Maybe three or four hours. I don't know. Fingers crossed.
34:08Yeah, yeah. At the front of the park, Molly and Tyler.
34:17Do you feel like jumping back into the race? Not just yet.
34:23Oh, look at that. That's a proper traditional fisherman.
34:28I could catch a fish. You've ever been fishing?
34:31I've never been fishing, but that don't matter. It's about mindset.
34:34OK. Buenos dias.
34:37My bro. Can you show me how to fish? You teach me. OK, let's go.
34:43The Guna people live as their ancestors did. Farming and fishing sustainably in Ulus, handcrafted
34:51wooden canoes.
34:53Como te llamas?
34:54D'Amelio. D'Amelio.
34:55D'Amelio.
34:56Me llamo Tyler.
34:57Tyler.
34:58Right, I'm going to give this a go. Come on, then.
35:03Fishing is the least South London thing I could ever imagine myself doing.
35:09I never knew what it was like to grow up in, like, a nuclear household. My mum brought
35:13me and my brother up on our own. She's done everything for us. You just gotta drag it.
35:19I never knew what it was like to not see my mum work multiple jobs. Come on, Ty. We want
35:26to be able to say, caught a fish. My mum would take us out, and we'd go to, like, the supermarket
35:31at, like, midnight. She would say, we're going to play a game. Who can find the cheapest dinner?
35:34And at the time, me and my brother are running around, like, yeah, we're running wild in the
35:37aisles. Like, it's like supermarket sweet. And then we'd go home for whatever we could afford,
35:41and then she'd make the dinner, and then she'd tuck us in, and then just... The reality of that
35:44situation is that she was struggling, but she never let up.
35:48Oh! Oh, my God! Molly! Molly!
35:53What? I caught a fish!
35:55Yay! Come on!
35:58Oh, my gosh. I'm holding a fish. I'm holding a fish! Yes!
36:04I knew we could do it.
36:06Oh?
36:07Oy!
36:09This is so good. Honestly, muchas gracias.
36:13Molly Rayford!
36:15She's going to have to marry me, isn't she?
36:17How many fish you got?
36:19What? Five.
36:20Breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.
36:22That's all I was talking about.
36:24I'm proud of you.
36:25Yeah?
36:26It was actually really special, because, like, I've never had that growing up, like,
36:32going out, learning how to fish and stuff like that, and it's one thing that I know as
36:36a dad one day, I would love to be able to take my kids out and say, hey, come on, let's go fishing.
36:42I feel on top of the world. I feel on top of the island.
36:46You go every day?
36:52Every day.
36:53Roman is also throwing himself into the Guna way of life, joining Senor Blas to collect food supplies from his farm on the mainland, where plantain fields line the coast.
37:05We're the first?
37:06Yes.
37:07Wow.
37:08There's snakes here.
37:22Yes, culebra.
37:25Just like that he's got the knife and I've got the handbag.
37:30This feels like a proper step into the jungle.
37:35This is hard work.
37:37These plantains are not light either.
37:40It's a really nice feeling.
37:42You're not thinking about anything, and you've just got a job to do.
37:46It's kind of a nice break from your own brain, I guess.
37:51You know, there's been moments in my life where I didn't even want to be here anymore,
37:55and things like this just make me think if I had made different decisions, I never would have seen this,
38:01and I never would have experienced this, and I never, you know, yeah, this shows that there's stuff worth living for, you know?
38:12It was a bad time in my life.
38:21I remember one moment in particular where it was really bad.
38:29I just remember my mum passing the phone to Harley and Harley trying to just talk to me,
38:38just to, I guess, distract me and keep me on the phone so that my mum could get in the car and drive to me.
38:46I don't know if I ever actually have spoken to Harley about that call.
38:50I don't think we've ever really been ready to have that conversation.
38:55It's hard to talk about, man. It's really hard.
39:05What I do know is that conversation between my mum and Harley might have saved my life on that day.
39:16It's hard. We walked about an hour into the jungle.
39:23What was it like?
39:26I'm not used to doing stuff that removes me from everything.
39:31Yeah.
39:33But it did make me think, though.
39:35Because, obviously, you know that I've had moments in my life where I just feel like I didn't really want to be here anymore.
39:42Yeah.
39:46What's upset you?
39:50No, nothing.
39:53It's just hard because, like, we had that day where it was really bad for me.
40:00The more that I think about it and I realise that it was you on the phone to me and...
40:06Until mum got there.
40:07I can't even remember what the conversation was.
40:22But I knew that I was safe if I stayed on the phone.
40:27And I feel bad because I never really said thanks for that.
40:29That was...
40:32Come on.
40:38We just want you to be OK.
40:41No, I appreciate it so much.
40:44Oh, I'm so sorry that I put you guys through that.
40:47It was OK.
40:48I just want you to be happy, right?
40:52You don't need to say thanks.
40:53Yeah, I know.
40:57I don't want to feel like that ever again and I don't think I will.
41:02I'm sorry that I didn't tell you enough that I love you.
41:05I love you too.
41:06I love you too.
41:22We've never had that conversation before.
41:25It's nice to hear him say I love you, but I know he loves me.
41:28When someone has had episodes of really bad mental health, I think you'll always worry about them.
41:36And I was worried about him coming out here.
41:39And...
41:41He's really turned it around and he's doing great.
41:44And I'm really proud of him.
41:47It feels really freeing to have the conversation because...
41:51Now there's...
41:53There's nothing lingering.
41:55We're kind of a clean slate again.
41:57And I think this place will always kind of be special to Harley and I.
42:02All right, let's get back on the boat.
42:06It's one of those places you want to take one last look, you know what I mean?
42:08I like it.
42:14Can you get in?
42:15Yes.
42:17Right, back to it.
42:19Aww.
42:20That was amazing.
42:21All four teams are now back at sea, but with Colombian immigration closing before dusk, there's urgency to get to the border.
42:37We will get there.
42:40We will.
42:42Oh my gosh.
42:44He's gone into boy racer mode now.
42:47What's going on?
42:49Señor?
42:51Why have we stopped?
42:53Let's stop.
42:55Until when? What time?
42:57It's getting dark.
42:59No sir, you don't know.
43:02This is it.
43:04They're sleeping overnight.
43:05Anita and Bal have travelled as far as they can safely before night falls.
43:11We've been deserted on a desert island.
43:16The adventure continues.
43:1870 kilometres behind...
43:20I haven't seen the Colombian flag yet.
43:23Mother and son are also dropping anchor.
43:25All right, let's go figure out how to get to Medellin.
43:31Hola, English?
43:33English?
43:35We're looking to get to Medellin.
43:38Medellin?
43:39Colombia?
43:40Si, si.
43:42Long way away.
43:44We're not in Colombia?
43:46No.
43:47Panama.
43:48Panama still.
43:53Okay.
43:55Oh, right.
43:56I thought we were in Colombia.
43:57I thought...
43:58Well...
43:59Okay.
44:02I don't understand where the heck we are.
44:06Hola, hello, English?
44:08Yes.
44:09Oh, hi.
44:10Where are we?
44:11I could stop Panama.
44:12Yeah.
44:13So, you're right here.
44:15Oh.
44:16Okay.
44:17Okay.
44:18So, we're trying to get to Medellin.
44:20Oh, Colombia.
44:21Yeah, but we don't know how to get to Colombia.
44:23You've got to first get to shore.
44:25Oh, right.
44:26We're on an island, are we?
44:28How did you guys get here?
44:29By boat.
44:30Well, we got here by boat, but we have no idea.
44:34Dylan and Jackie are still in Gunayala on Nargana Island, 170 kilometres from the Colombian border.
44:42We're going to figure this out.
44:43It is brain-rattling that we've landed here and it's not where we thought it was and we don't know how the heck to get to Colombia, but I'm going to try and keep positive.
44:57Hello.
44:58Hello.
44:59Colombia, see?
45:00What time does it go?
45:01Hello.
45:02You sleep today.
45:03You sleep here.
45:04It stays here today?
45:06Okay.
45:07We might be a bit screwed.
45:10We're in the final country.
45:20Oh, my days.
45:21We made it.
45:22This is nuts.
45:24Molly and Tyler are the first team to land on Colombian shores.
45:32We made it by the skin of our teeth because immigration is literally just closed.
45:39So, someone's looking down at us.
45:42We've just got to get through Colombia now.
45:44Okay.
45:45This looks like a hostel.
45:50On the other side of the border.
45:52Oh.
45:53Hola, Juanes.
45:54Para frontera.
45:56En elación ocho de la mañana.
45:59Mañana?
46:00Ocho.
46:01Ocho de la mañana.
46:02Ocho de la mañana.
46:03Ocho de la mañana.
46:04Ocho de la mañana.
46:05Ocho de la mañana.
46:06Ocho de la mañana.
46:08We literally got here just after five o'clock.
46:11So, we just missed the stamp out time, which is a bit gutting.
46:15So, we'll have to get at it tomorrow.
46:17It's going to be a big day tomorrow.
46:19We'll just be there as early as possible.
46:21I want to be at the front of that queue.
46:23Yeah.
46:26Hola.
46:27Gracias.
46:28Gracias.
46:30Farthest away, stuck on Nargana Island, Dylan and Jackie have secured a room for the night.
46:36This past couple of days has completely annihilated our budget now.
46:42We're going to have to be canny and careful to get to the end.
46:46I had no idea how difficult doing the race was going to be.
46:50The confusion of, are we in Colombia? Are we in Panama? That was, yeah, quite a tough pill to swallow.
47:00We were almost at breaking point there.
47:02But, yeah, we're just trying our best to power through.
47:11We still don't know how many hours we've got to go to get to Colombia.
47:14We have no idea where we are.
47:16A desert island in the middle of nowhere.
47:19However, tomorrow, I am switching into another gear.
47:23Whatever it takes, I'm going to get us to the checkpoint tomorrow.
47:29All right, here we go.
47:32Night, Dad.
47:33Good night.
47:39Oh, I hope you don't snore tonight, Dad.
47:41I don't snore.
47:42You have these tiny little snores.
47:45Shush, I do not snore.
47:47Stop fibbing about me.
47:49Shush, shush, Dad.
47:51There's an 8am boat. Let's get it.
48:06Gracias.
48:12We're back on a boat.
48:14Still a bit bumpy.
48:15It's all right.
48:16But it's better.
48:17I had a good feeling about today.
48:19Teams have one last boat trip across the Gulf of Urabah.
48:24From here, they can head directly by road to the checkpoint.
48:30This is moving pretty quick.
48:32If we get to the end of the segment first, it would have been worth it.
48:35Just to taste it, at least one.
48:38What, do you agree?
48:40Arriving at immigration, Anita and Bal looking to close the gap.
48:45Is the border crossing, is this?
48:47Let's get our passport stamped and let's get into Colombia.
48:5160 kilometres behind.
48:54Feels like Panama's not letting us go.
48:58Whoa, look at that.
49:00No way.
49:01Bloody hell.
49:02Look at those lungs.
49:04That's amazing.
49:05Yeah.
49:06Makes the journey all worth it.
49:09Yeah.
49:11Good boy, Panama.
49:13Take three.
49:15Finally reaching dry land.
49:17We're here.
49:19Two teams now on the home straight.
49:22That was a quick boat.
49:23No, I'm a bit windswip.
49:25Get our bags and find the bus station.
49:27Now we need to find a bus.
49:30An express bus.
49:32Oh.
49:34Oh, mate.
49:36Garmin message, what?
49:37Don't send me back the other way.
49:38Due to planned strikes on the approach to Medellin for safety, teams will be shuttled to Betancourt airport and will board the next available flight.
49:49So there's strikes.
49:51On the approach to Medellin, what does that mean?
49:54Due to rumoured armed attacks in the Antioquia region, the Colombian police and army are on high security alert.
50:02For safety, teams must fly to make a final approach to the checkpoint of Medellin.
50:10Oh, no.
50:14This could be a game changer, though, because if the flight's not till this afternoon, we'll all be on it.
50:19Oh, God!
50:20This is getting madder and madder.
50:26I'm kind of sad about having to fly to Medellin because I feel like we were really...
50:31On track and on focus.
50:33But now it all depends what time the next available flight is.
50:37It could change everything.
50:40Unaware of what lies ahead...
50:42Yahoo!
50:44Point it.
50:47Anita and Bal are on the final crossing.
50:50I think it might have broken down.
51:04We're literally five minutes out of the port.
51:06Oh, my God.
51:08We're literally just bobbing around.
51:10I hope another boat doesn't come.
51:12And passes us.
51:13Passes us. Oh, my God.
51:15What is going on today?
