00:00Okay, so consider this list that I have a warning, D'Amico, okay?
00:04Because those little illegal formations where the tackle's not covered up,
00:10which you did a nice job educating me on earlier this week,
00:14that there actually is an advantage being gained with that.
00:16It's always been a role where I'm like, this seems a little nitpicky.
00:19This seems a little much.
00:20No, no, yeah, it is.
00:21I mean, some of it's just simple.
00:23Yeah, I won't get into the weeds.
00:24Yeah, yeah.
00:25No, but likewise, though, Sean, it is one of those things that's very simple.
00:30And, you know, when it comes back to some of the things like coming up to the line of scrimmage
00:33with enough time, getting the play call, and C.J. understanding, you know,
00:37like that extra five seconds can be where C.J. tells the second tight end,
00:42hey, you got to get off the line of scrimmage, that kind of stuff.
00:46It's especially infuriating as a coach.
00:48Yeah.
00:48Because like D'Amico was just saying right there, like, man, this is so avoidable.
00:54You're going to get some holding calls.
00:56You're going to get some defensive pass interference.
00:58Like, some of that's just going to happen.
01:00But, my God, this is so avoidable.
01:02It's very preventable.
01:03You're right.
01:03Yeah.
01:03Whatever the advantage that's being gained is whatever.
01:06Like, the bottom line, as far as your team goes, is that it's unacceptable and inexcusable
01:12for it to happen.
01:13All right.
01:13So, I jotted down this list, Seth.
01:15This is the warning to the Texans to not commit any of these things this weekend or any weekend.
01:22Okay.
01:22So, you're going from 9 to 1?
01:24I'm going from 9 to 1.
01:25Yeah.
01:25I'm going from 9 to 1.
01:27Any procedural penalty out of a timeout?
01:31Oh, yeah.
01:32Yes.
01:33Yes.
01:34Yes.
01:35Come out of a timeout and you false start or you delay a game out of a timeout?
01:41You have zero, zero to worry about.
01:44That's shortly followed up by coming out of, this isn't a penalty, but, like, coming out
01:51of a timeout and then running the exact same play that you did before.
01:54Like, that.
01:55Yes.
01:55So, the worst is if you run a play, it fails, but there's a penalty, or you call a timeout,
02:03and then you go out and run the same play again.
02:05Yes.
02:06Yes.
02:06Yeah.
02:06It's just, any, like, they, yeah, if you run a play, you're stuffed on third down, you
02:10run, but you call a timeout, presumably to dial up the perfect play, then you come back
02:15and run the same play again.
02:16That would have been, if they had called timeout in between the two Cade Stover tush pushes.
02:19Yeah, yeah, yeah.
02:20Right?
02:22Okay.
02:23So, that's number nine.
02:24Number eight, any late hit on a quarterback where you are just so clearly out of bounds?
02:30Like, out of your periphery, you can see that there's trainers and Gatorade jugs next
02:34The one that should have been called, or the one that should have been called on the
02:37Colts, when the player, CJ, the ball is away, CJ's standing there, and the kid swept his
02:42leg.
02:43Swept the leg, man.
02:44Yeah.
02:44Like, that would have been, man, if that had been called as it should have been, oh my
02:49gosh, can you imagine how angry you'd be with that guy?
02:52If you were a Colts fan, right.
02:53Yeah.
02:53Right.
02:53Yeah.
02:54Yeah.
02:54So, that's, so, number eight, yeah, anything late on the quarterback.
02:57Yeah, anything egregiously late.
02:59That would have been a penalty 20 years ago.
03:01Right, right, right.
03:02Like, we know they're protecting these guys.
03:04Um, all right, number seven, illegal contact.
03:08Like, way down the field.
03:10Like, you're clearly outside of the five yards, and you decide to, because it's such a chintzy
03:15little penalty.
03:16Uh-huh.
03:17But it's an automatic first.
03:18It's only five yards.
03:19Yeah.
03:19It's that automatic first down.
03:21One of the sneaky, awful penalties.
03:24Yes.
03:25Because it's so much, it's so much less severe than pass interference downfield.
03:30Right.
03:30But, because that's a spot foul.
03:32Yes.
03:33But it's the, it's the first down part of it that you forget.
03:36It's like, oh, five yards, whatever.
03:37Why don't they do this every down?
03:39Automatic first down.
03:40Oh, that's right.
03:41Bashers.
03:42It's you go.
03:44I fall victim to that.
03:45I'm like, in my mind, I'm like, okay, five yards.
03:48And then when they announce first down, ah, we've been watching it.
03:51Oh, did I miss this rule change?
03:53We've been watching it for 50 years.
03:54You played for 10 years.
03:56We've been watching it for 50 years.
03:57I'm like, first down.
03:59All right.
03:59So that's number seven.
04:01Number six, illegal man downfield when it's really egregious and bad.
04:08And especially when it's done, the fatter the offensive lineman, the worse it is.
04:13The more they're waddling downfield, it's one thing if it's a, if it's a screen or an RPO
04:20that got botched and then it's half the time, it's a quarterback's fault on those.
04:24Yeah.
04:24When it's just one guy that like clearly thought it was actually a run play or something.
04:29Yes.
04:30Yeah.
04:30What are you doing?
04:31Yes.
04:32And if you're waddling, oh man, that's bad.
04:35Even worse.
04:36If you whiff on whoever you were trying to, this was completely useless.
04:40Yeah.
04:41I might have that one too low.
04:42So that's number six.
04:44Number five.
04:45This is another annoying one.
04:46This is the, this is the offensive version of illegal contact.
04:50The illegal shift.
04:51The, when you got two guys moving at the same time when the ball snapped is, is it, that's
04:56a ticky tack one that just gnaws at me because they're clearly, this isn't even trying to
05:03get an unfair advantage.
05:04This is something that can clearly be seen by anybody in the stadium.
05:06Like what the, so one of you botched this royally.
05:10Yeah.
05:11Botched this royally.
05:11That's just the ones that are so preventable are really, really bad.
05:16So illegal, illegal shift is, is number five.
05:19Um, number four, the delay of game penalty when everybody in the stadium is looking at
05:26the play clock and you're going, okay, there's 20 seconds.
05:29Okay.
05:30There's 15, you're not out of the huddle yet.
05:32There's 10 seconds left and you're now just breaking the huddle and you got to burn a
05:35timeout.
05:36You can feel it.
05:37Yes.
05:37Yeah.
05:37Um, well, in the, cause it's a penalty, you don't, you don't burn the timeout.
05:42I'd say beyond that though, it's the one where the quarterback is furiously clapping and
05:46everybody, like that's just, everybody's waiting for the snap in the center for whatever reason
05:52isn't, isn't picking up on it.
05:54That's a rough one.
05:55Okay.
05:55I'm glad you said that perfect segue for three.
05:58Again, we're going through the nine most infuriating penalties for if your team commits
06:03them.
06:03This isn't a commentary on the referees.
06:05This is a commentary on the stupidity of your team.
06:08Number three, the center false start.
06:11Oh yeah.
06:12The false start where everybody moves, but the center.
06:14Yeah.
06:15And especially the, they're not just the ones where his head on the silent count.
06:19Sometimes they'll pick up their head.
06:20Cause then if you're the home team, you're like, no, that's bogus.
06:23He's just doing what they always do.
06:24No, the egregious center false start where he jerks back and catches himself.
06:29Well, or the one where the center, the kind of the one I'm referring to is the one where
06:33clearly the center who is responsible for snapping the ball is the only one that botched
06:37the snap count.
06:38Right.
06:39That's what I mean.
06:39Yeah.
06:40Like the one where he's definitely thought that it was, yeah, it's a, he was offset or
06:44when it's not called a penalty is when he actually snaps the ball.
06:48Yeah.
06:48And then everybody else is still in their stance.
06:51Yeah.
06:51Yeah.
06:51Yeah.
06:51Yeah.
06:51Yeah.
06:52So that the, the center false start is number three, very underrated.
06:56Um, number two, obvious taunting, obvious taunting.
07:01Like there's, there's trash talk.
07:03Sure.
07:03But like, for example, Kamari Lasseter had one, I forget which game it was might've been
07:08the Denver game.
07:09Cause I think it was a home game and he taunted somebody and realized three seconds in, oh crap,
07:16I'm taunting them and then puts his hands up and walks away.
07:18Like, oh, what's the, that's the bills game.
07:21When he, it was a bills game where he did that.
07:23He looked down at the player and it was kind of a ticky tack.
07:25It, they called it because it's the point of emphasis this year, but it was enough that
07:31he looked directly at the guy.
07:32That's what they, they don't want you looking at anybody anymore.
07:34And they know that the player should know this.
07:36You gotta be able to, I get it.
07:37It's, I get it.
07:38It's a high testosterone zone going on out there, but the obvious taunting, man, cause
07:43that is just, there is nothing to be gained from it.
07:46There's zero to be other 15 yard penalty.
07:49I would even argue that a face mask, which didn't make the list because a lot of times
07:53it's accidental, but like a face mask, I look, I can deal with a face mask.
07:56Cause it's your, it's part of the effort of bringing a guy to the ground.
08:00Right, right.
08:00There is nothing you gain from taunting.
08:03You're not intimidating anybody.
08:04You, this, these guys are in the NFL that you're standing over them and taunting them.
08:09They're laughing at you.
08:09Cause you got a 15 yard penalty.
08:11That's what they're doing.
08:12Oh, there is, by the way, that is, that is fun.
08:14When somebody does something unsportsmanlike to you and you see the flag before they do
08:19once we played the bills back in 2000, I think it was 2003 and peerless price after
08:25a play.
08:26Do you remember a little tiny peerless price?
08:28Good player.
08:28Yeah.
08:29At the time I weighed about 320 pounds, he came up and just, after a play was over in
08:35the backfield, shoved me in the back.
08:38And I have no idea why I'm like, what did I ever do to peerless?
08:42And I kind of turned around and I wasn't even angry.
08:45I was like, what the hell's going on here?
08:47But he did it right in front of the official.
08:49And I, I was able to like, I saw, I saw the, I wasn't even complaining to it.
08:54I was still trying to figure out what was even going on.
08:56And I got to just kind of smile and point at the flag as it was coming down.
09:00Oh, that's okay.
09:02I mean, if we were to power rank the best feelings on a football field, aside from scoring a touchdown,
09:07that's got to be up there pretty high.
09:09The only thing about it was that I, like, peerless price was the kind of guy that I don't think
09:12cared.
09:13You know?
09:13He was like, yeah, I still shoved you, big guy.
09:15Yeah.
09:16Yeah, exactly.
09:16I don't know.
09:17I think he must've thought I was somebody else.
09:19I don't know.
09:20I was like, why?
09:21What are you doing?
09:22Yeah.
09:23It was really, it's like, what, sir?
09:26I, if I have offended you, I apologize.
09:28I apologize, but please let us discuss this.
09:31Like, wow.
09:32Yeah.
09:32Cause he was tiny, man.
09:34He was a tiny dude.
09:35Um, all right.
09:35Number one.
09:36And this is fortunately something that I've only seen once in my entire life.
09:41Yeah.
09:42And fortunately, none of our coaches have done this that I can remember, but I would bet that
09:46this would be the most infuriating.
09:48The Jim Schwartz challenge.
09:51Oh, on principle.
09:56For those who don't remember, I think we played this like a week ago.
10:00It was a Thanksgiving game that we, there was the lions and the Texans in 2012 and Justin
10:05Forsett clearly down early on in the 100% down on the ground, elbow on the ground.
10:12And he, but no whistle.
10:14So he gets up and runs for an 81 yard touchdown, which they upheld.
10:19They were going to review it anyways, cause it was a touchdown and he for sure would have
10:22been called down back at the 40 or whatever it was.
10:25Yeah.
10:26And Jim Schwartz threw the challenge on a play that was already going to be reviewed,
10:32but he was so disgusted that he threw the flag through the challenge flag, which is not
10:36only a 15 yard penalty, but lose the review, you lose the review, which really doesn't
10:41make a lot of sense, but none of it makes sense.
10:43Yeah.
10:44It feels like that weird one, like in basketball, when you, if you, if you, if you hand the ball
10:50to the official or the, before an inbound or vice versa, whatever that it it's weird.
10:55It's one of those things that it's a penalty because it slows down the pace of the game,
10:58but it seems like the, like loss of a possession seems like too drastic a penalty for it somehow.
11:04Yeah.
11:04And, um, yeah, this, it feels like it's kind of like out of bounds rule.
11:09That's not a penalty, but it's, it feels like the punishment is too severe.
11:14Agreed.
11:14And that too, like throwing a flag when you shouldn't throw a flag.
11:17All right.
11:17Just ignore the flag.
11:18Right.
11:19You're going to do the challenge anyway.
11:20It's, it's really weird.
11:22That should have been, it should have been placed the ball back where Justin Forsett was
11:26down and give the Texans an extra 15 yards.
11:29That's what it should have been.
11:30It should, that should have been the penalty.
11:32The penalty shouldn't have been the touchdown counts.
11:34We're not reviewing it at all.
11:36I don't understand why it's a penalty, but if it were to be a penalty, I'm saying, don't,
11:40you know, let the, let the, don't, don't make it cost the team a touchdown.
11:43I mean, I'm glad it did, but yeah, you're right.
11:46Like the accidental, like really, where the game's getting delayed massively because Jim Schwartz
11:51just threw, but because the, because the punishment is what it is.
11:54Number one, if that were to happen, if D'Amico Ryans were to throw a red challenge flag on
12:01an unchallengeable play and it costs the Texans the game, number one on the list, man.
12:06So, so Texans, any Texan that's listening right now, because I'm sure they've got our
12:09show piped out, all the speakers in the locker room, they practice today.
12:12That's what I've, I've been told.
12:14That's according to Stephen A. Smith.
12:16Yeah.
12:16They pipe it into them all the, they've got a little chip in their brain and they know
12:19exactly what's going on in sports.
12:20Exactly right.
12:20And now they know that we're not going to accept penalties like these.
12:23Um, speaking of except there is, um, moderate acceptance of my apology to Texas tech a little
12:29bit earlier.
12:29Oh yeah.
12:30Moderate.
12:31I would say, uh, as a red Raider, Sean, I accept for those who missed it.
12:34I apologize to Texas tech somewhat disingenuously because I need them to beat BYU this weekend
12:40for my team to get into the playoffs.
12:42Um, I thought it was pretty good apology though.
12:44And that it checked a lot of the boxes as a red Raider.
12:47I accept your apology to show you are fully repentant.
12:49You need to listen to Joey McGuire's opinion on how to fix the college coaching and transfer
12:54issue.
12:55It was earlier this week.
12:56Okay.
12:56Okay.
12:57So you had to go, I promise to do that later.
12:59It might be a fun actual, uh, uh, segment late on Friday.
13:03Uh, like the reviewing the Joey.
13:06It's good.
13:06Yeah.
13:06It's good.
13:07Bandied about a little bit.
13:07I'll write down to, I'm writing McGuire down on my sheet.
13:10I'll review it today.
13:11Yeah.
13:11Um, Sean, despite us being stupid and meatheads, your words, we do have a long memory and there's
13:18always next year for your independent gold golden domers.
13:21Sorry, buddy.
13:23Ooh.
13:23And I take that buddy is not a friend Seth pain buddy.
13:27Yeah.
13:27That's not like, Hey buddy.
13:28No, that's a buddy.
13:29Yeah.
13:30Like a New Yorker saying it.
13:31Yeah.
13:32Yeah.
13:32Yeah.
13:33Yeah.
13:33Hey, real quick to add to the most infuriating penalty.
13:37Yeah.
13:37Yeah.
13:37Um, the actual referee himself.
13:39Cause many of you remember Clay Martin was the official in this last week's game versus
13:46the Colts.
13:46And it was a poorly officiated game.
13:48There were so many, including Clay Martin standing there and saying that the Texans kickoff
13:53return, uh, committed a penalty and it was number seven.
13:57Yeah.
13:57That's when I knew things were going to be rough on that day.
14:00Yep.
14:00All right.
14:01It's apparently CJ's child's on kickoff return now.
14:04Um, but then I'm going back and I'm watching last year's Texans chiefs playoff game.
14:09And I wanted to specifically watch Will Anderson and the penalty he drew for a helmet to helmet
14:15contact.
14:15And who is it, who is it announcing the penalty, but old Clay Martin, he was the ref that game.
14:21He was the ref game where there was, I, I, the, the, the tough thing, you know, in coaching
14:26that up with Will Anderson, cause Will said that there definitely wasn't a helmet to helmet
14:30contact.
14:31Um, but you really couldn't tell from that angle.
14:33The one thing about it where I can see if you're going to coach it, Will did have his, his helmet
14:40down a little bit on his way in like that.
14:43And I think the Texans by and large have been good at avoiding those types of penalties this
14:46year, but that, that extra emphasis on really having your head up at all times, it makes a
14:52difference just cause that the angle, the referee was seeing that from he, I I'm not excusing it
14:58cause he called something that he didn't actually see, but I can see where the error came.
15:02I got to look up and see who the crew is this week.
15:04You know, they've got that Twitter account that kind of shows the trends with the different
15:08refs.
15:08I got to go find that.
15:09Cause I don't want any more Clay Martin in my life.
15:11Yeah.
15:12They won't, they wouldn't get him back to back weeks.
15:13I wouldn't think right.
15:14The, the, the crews in the NFL.
15:16I don't think that's a thing getting in the same.
15:18I, I, yeah, I just, I don't know.
15:20I don't know.
15:20Is that, do they try to keep them away from the same team?
15:23I would, I would think you try to avoid it just in case there was any interpersonal stuff that
15:26you need to let cool down for a couple of weeks.
15:29Probability wise, they wouldn't get them, but yeah, I don't know.
15:31Yeah.
15:31I have zero clue how that works.
