Seth and Sean assess if Texans vs Jaguars features legitimately the best Quarterbacks to come out of the 2021 draft class in Davis Mills and Trevor Lawrence.
Transcript
00:00This matchup of quarterbacks on Sunday, Trevor Lawrence, the number one overall pick in the
00:092021 NFL draft and Davis Mills, the 67th overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The first pick
00:17for the Texans that year, that was Nick Casario's first year as general manager. And he picked
00:22Davis Mills. And we all recall Rich Eisen going, what are they doing? What are you doing?
00:27He didn't realize he hadn't been updated because it did seem like the national media for a long
00:32time was just not touching the Deshaun Watson story with a 10 foot goal that he was acting
00:37like in his mind, it was like, they've already got Deshaun Watson. What's going on? That's
00:41exactly right. Yeah. Um, so in, in between there were a handful, about a half dozen or
00:47so quarterbacks picked. Are these the two best quarterbacks from the 2020 Trevor Lawrence
00:56is the only one who's gotten paid, paid out of this draft. I'm going to go down the list
01:00here. Yeah. Cause I've got one argument against this. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Man, what a depressing
01:04list. Right. Right. And I'm not saying I think it's the two best, but I think the fact that
01:08it's even a conversation, this is a failed quarterback class. The Trevor Lawrence is the clear cut
01:13number one. Yeah. And he ain't been that good. I don't know if he's clear cut. Okay. Zach
01:19Wilson, number two pick. Definitely not as good as Trevor Lawrence or Davis mills. Yup.
01:24He's one, what? Like his fourth team now. Zach Wilson, the Texans killer to be sure.
01:27He did kill the Texans. Yeah. Yeah. And he's a, I think maybe third team. He's back up to
01:31Quinn Ewers on the, uh, as third string on the dolphins, uh, Trey Lance, mom, Trey hop,
01:37super hot. Yeah. You might win that battle. I haven't seen all the other mothers or reportedly
01:42hot mom friends that he himself is very fine. That's right. Yeah. According to reports, uh, Trey
01:48Lance, third pick in that draft. Is he still in professional football playing for the chargers?
01:52That's right. Yeah. Yeah. He's playing for the chargers. Not as good as Trevor Lawrence
01:56or David Trey Lance picked third overall after, uh, everybody was convinced that Kyle Shanahan
02:02wanted Mac Jones and, uh, they traded up so aggressively to, to prove that they definitely
02:08didn't want Mac Jones. Uh, cause it goes Trey Lance, then Justin Fields, and then Mac Jones
02:13goes with the 15th cave. Justin Fields, 11th pick and Mac Jones with the 15th pick. Mac Jones
02:18was the one that I'm wondering about. He's the rookie of the year that year. Well, he's
02:21rookie of the year that year and he's playing better than both Trevor Lawrence and Davis
02:25Mills so far this year. That's true. Yeah. Like Mac Jones is going to, I was talking to
02:28Bucky Brooks yesterday and I said, okay, so who's the next guy who's going to be the next
02:32Sam Darnold to be. And he said, I think it might be Mac Jones. I mean, like it, it's funny.
02:39It was cool talking to Bucky cause Bucky's, you know, he works for the NFL network and he's
02:43very, very plugged in. And the, the, everybody was wrong, obviously about the 49ers drafting
02:48Mac Jones, but the way Bucky presented it was that it, Kyle Shanahan really liked Mac Jones,
02:54but he was talked into Trey Lance. And, uh, at least that's what he kind of, uh, that's
03:00what has been suggested to him. Say by whom? No, he didn't. He didn't. Who could it have
03:04been that would have that sort of, I mean, John Lynch be the only one, I guess that would
03:08have that sort of dad or the owner. I mean, Shanahan did him in or the own, you know,
03:12ownership steps in on big decisions like that. But whatever it was that Kyle Shannon did
03:17like Mac Jones and now he's got him and Mac Jones is, is playing much better football than
03:21he has as of late. He is. He's played largely good football. So Mac Jones would be the one
03:24I wonder about that. I would, I would say, let's keep him, let's keep him in the hopper
03:28and see what happens with him. When we live in this age of Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Daniel
03:32Jones, uh, uh, Gino Smith, all these guys having, you know, mid career or late career
03:37surges. Yeah. Yeah. Uh, Kyle Trask, shout out Manville, uh, Kyle Trask, but hasn't gotten
03:43on the field for the Bucs. Uh, wasn't he on the team for a little bit? No, he's still
03:48on Tampa Bay. He got drafted. Kyle Trask got drafted. Oh, I thought, nevermind. I'm, I'm
03:51blanking. Yep. Yep. You're thinking of Kyle Allen. Yeah. Yeah. Sorry. Sorry. Uh, I was
03:55thinking of the various, uh, at number one, overall high school recruits on the Texans and
04:00Kyle Allen was one of them. Yeah. Kyle Trask was, uh, coming out. No, he was actually a backup
04:05to Derek King. That's right. Yeah. Messing up my Kyle Trask and Kyle Allen. That's all
04:09right. Just to both. That's all right. Uh, Kellen Mond, who I don't think is in kind
04:15of one Kellen Mond coming out. Although the Aggies were not as high on Kellen. That was
04:18when I first started your theory. I go to the alums. Yeah. I go to the fan base. I have,
04:24if there's one thing that sets me apart from a lot of these other huge ego sports media types,
04:30cause let's not get it wrong. I've got a huge ego. Um, I have, uh, well, many of those big ego
04:35types, uh, like increasingly veered towards like, eh, people are stupid. Uh, I don't know.
04:39Nobody knows it is like I do. Um, I'm starting to realize, man is a barometer for some things
04:45and especially college quarterbacks. The fan bases will tell you for sure. They'll be like,
04:49Hey, love the guy, but a hundred percent. Yup. And then you dig in and you say, Oh, I see what
04:54they're talking about. That's what it Bo Nix with Denver, the smart, the smart Broncos fans
05:00are saying like, I don't know about Bo Nix. They watch every snap. Yeah. Yeah. And you look into
05:06it and you're like, Oh, it was, I was learning about the Broncos last week. Oh yeah. He's not
05:10the guy. He's a, he's holding this team. He is being lifted up by this team right now,
05:15but he's certainly not driving any of it. Kellen Mond went one pick before Davis Mills at 67.
05:20I would power rank this class. Boy, I, you know what? Mack Jones having gotten rookie of the year
05:27and now being a solid quarterback for the 49ers this season for a half season so far. Yeah. That
05:33outweighs the Trevor Lawrence performances to me, man. Trevor Lawrence is one of the most overrated
05:37quarterbacks of the last 20 years. If you had to pick right now, okay, you can start a franchise
05:43with either Trevor Lawrence or Mack Jones. I would take the, I would take the upside of Mack Jones and
05:48figure that man, he was in a weird situation in New England when he had Josh McDaniels did a
05:55really weird situation. I would take Mack Jones and I would hire an OC off of the Kyle Shanahan
05:59tree. That's what I would do. He's a lot like Darnold. He, you know, he went into that cleansing
06:04car wash of being out there in San Francisco. Cause tell me if I've got the timeline right.
06:092021 Mack Jones had Josh McDaniels as his offensive coordinator, but then in 2022,
06:13he had a combination of Matt Patricia and Joe judge. That's correct. Coordinator. Yep. And somehow
06:18that was his fault. Then he had bill O'Brien as his offensive coordinator in 2023. Yeah. Yep. But
06:24on a team that was just decrepit by that point, by that point. Yeah. And, and, and that Joe judge,
06:30Matt Patricia thing was something that people saw coming from a mile away. You know, that,
06:34what are you doing? Bill Belichick, you're just, you've got this young, like that it was going to
06:38fail. They first round quarterback with no wide receivers to throw to. And you're giving him
06:42a special teams coordinator and a defensive coordinator to mold him. Yeah. What the hell
06:47are you doing? What are you doing? Yeah. I would power rank at Mack Jones, Trevor Lawrence, Davis
06:52Mills. That's how I would power it. Okay. Some may argue Justin Fields. Cause he did a blah, blah,
06:57blah. Justin Fields, Justin Fields has a winning percentage. That's that's identical to Davis Mills.
07:01He looks scared to throw the football. Yes. If I, if you had to win a game, would you take
07:05Justin Fields or Davis Mills right now? Oh, right now? Yeah. Yeah. I'd have to take Davis Mills.
07:10Yeah. That's not like a huge endorsement of Davis Mills or anything. You know what they have in
07:14common? The two of them, uh, Justin Fields also just nearly got benched for Terod Taylor in, in,
07:21in New York. You know what I would say? If I had to win one game though, I would say, all right,
07:25if Justin Fields can just go out and I create a game plan that's just for him. Yeah. I would take
07:30Justin Fields over the course of a season. If I had to take him for the course, isn't it?
07:35That's a good way to look at it. Yeah. Like if I'm on an average football team, just try to steer
07:39the ship. What a, what a bat that, that is a, that is a quarterback class that had five quarterbacks
07:45taken in the top 15 picks and it's awful. That is an awful class. I mean, you, I was thinking about
07:53this when this popped into my head today, I'm like, what would the, what, like, what would the matchups
07:57be in some of the other recent classes that we've had of like, Hey, these are the top two
08:01quarterbacks in this class. Like when Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson were going against
08:04each other a few times, you're like, yeah, these are the two crown jewels of the 2017 class.
08:09The 2018 class with the fact that Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold are both MVP candidates right now,
08:16along with Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson, an actual two-time MVP, that class might be the best class
08:22of this century. I think honestly, like 2020 and 2021 was when I think the teams really started
08:28thinking hard about, all right, are we really overvaluing quarterbacks at this point? The point
08:33where you just want to, you're trying desperately to draft a guy as high as possible, even though
08:38in previous generations, he might've been a late first round pick or a second round pick. I mean,
08:422020, the bucks win the super bowl with an aging veteran. They sign as a free agent. Yeah.
08:48The, then 2021 Matt Stafford wins a super bowl on a team that he wasn't drafted on a veteran that
08:55was traded. And then, you know, Pat Mahomes in 22 and 23, he's a guy that was drafted, not in the
09:00top 10. Well, and he was going against Brock Purdy. Right, right. Yeah. Yeah. I think, no,
09:05was that was the, no, he lost to Brady Mahomes. I'm talking about when he beat San Francisco.
09:10Oh, okay. Yeah. That was Brock Purdy. That was Brock Purdy. And the other one was
09:12Jalen Hurts. It's crazy. Jalen Hurts wins one as a second round pick. Yeah.
09:18And just the, the notion that man, that's where I think it's nice because you can really now
09:24genuinely throw aside the notion of trading as tanking for a number one overall pick. It's just
09:30so overrated in football. It's just not the same basketball, different deal because one guy can
09:36change it. One guy can change a team. And there are guys that are just genuinely just such rare
09:40physical freaks that it's, it's, it's impossible not to think about it. Totally. Totally. I mean,
09:46but in basketball, they've taken measures to prevent it, you know, like football, I don't
09:50think they have to take measures to prevent it. Like a lottery. I mean, it's just a, yeah. Yeah.
09:54Football. I don't think you need to take measures because it's just not, it's not an advisable
09:58strategy. There's better ways to go about your business. No. And the, and the culture it brings
10:01into the building of like, of going out, like intentionally losing or, or at least in terms of
10:07the front office, the people who make those decisions fielding a team where the goal is to
10:11lose a bunch of football. There's a culture. It's almost like an undefinable cultural part
10:15of it. But then there's also in football, the, the weird thing about it is too, if you're
10:19tanking in football, whatever good talent you do have on the team is a growing really disenchanted
10:26with sticking around and be getting the physical snot beat out of them. Like they're actually
10:30taking a physical beating as you're tanking to the point where it makes a lot tougher that
10:34with these new guys you do draft. Like what kind of a team do you have?
