00:01:01two Arthur Johnson for the IBF bantamweight title two fighters looking to get back into the swing
00:01:08after long bouts of inactivity Austin and Johnson spoke about tonight's fight
00:01:14I had scheduling problems that's why I haven't fought in eight months it was real frustrating
00:01:26oh yeah I miss fighting a lot I miss the lights the camera the excitement the crowd you know just
00:01:33the thrill of what boxing is all about I wanted to put my title on the line you know with a guy like
00:01:40Arthur Johnson a tough fighter um has been around have experienced I believe you know this fight
00:01:47here will put me on a level where I need to be and where I want to go um this fight will show the world
00:01:54what Tim Austin is made of he's fighting this fight to prove that he's the best in the world
00:02:00I just don't feel like uh this is the time for someone to be making a name off me not at this time
00:02:07second place runner-up just doesn't do it for a championship bout nobody ever sees that in the
00:02:14record book oh he was uh he was running up man wow what a what a great fighter many are expecting a
00:02:20tough brawl but I only see it one way see it as me winning and dominating
00:02:26I see me knocking him out in the sixth round the six just been on my mind from the day I started
00:02:32training hey I feel like it's going to be a fight where I just do whatever I feel like doing and I
00:02:37just feel that he's going to be there as the Muppet and I'm just going to play him I know he's going to
00:02:41be hungry for it and you know I'm I'm still hungry myself so it's going to be two hungry guys just going at
00:02:48the next two very confident bantamweights in fact as you heard Tim Austin predicting a sixth round knockout over
00:03:01Arthur Johnson will Johnson's boxing skills and experience be enough to offset the blazing speed and power of
00:03:08Timmy Austin well Steve Johnson skills and his experience can offset the speed of Austin the power of Boston if he
00:03:14implements the right strategy if he's effective if he uses his own skills well and he has to also neutralize
00:03:19Austin if he doesn't neutralize Austin it could be a long night now both of these fighters have been off a long time
00:03:24extra layoff for Johnson's been off longer than Austin has and he's five years older so all the ill effects
00:03:29will probably double for him the body will take longer to get back in shape than it will for a young fighter
00:03:33the timing the zone harder to get back to I think Johnson's got a tall order before him tonight
00:03:37yeah he's 34 years old it could be a lot tougher on him than Austin let's get your keys to victory for both
00:03:42fighters all right let's start with the champion Tim Austin what he needs to do is work in behind the jab it sets
00:03:49up everything sets up the distance the combinations and control that distance especially using that jab and a
00:03:54straight left hand he's hurting many a fighter with it here you see him against Aguilar this is the distance he likes to
00:03:59be at he's going to lead with a left hand that doesn't really connect so he closes the gap down a little bit comes in
00:04:04with a right hook and a beautiful straight left hand down the middle very very effective misses there and there's the right hand left hook
00:04:11this really rocks Aguilar as he retreats Aguilar falls back toward the ropes Austin is all over him now
00:04:20the punches and the combinations he throws jab right hand straight left hand they don't really land cleanly
00:04:25but that left hand was so powerful that Aguilar is dizzy he has to take a knee and you'll see here in just a
00:04:30moment none of these punches are real effective but Aguilar just takes that knee Steve and he goes down
00:04:35Johnson needs to work a little differently he wants to shut the gap down a little bit push Austin back
00:04:43inside and crowd him work him hard and also make him miss an encounter hurt him make him pay every time
00:04:48he misses and lastly effective work on the inside he has to get the younger fighter broken down this
00:04:54distance is not the distance he wants he has to close it but when he comes he has to be effective here he
00:04:58works in kind of double that hook to the head first and then the body that's a little bit unusual for
00:05:03most players easily go to the body first there's the hook to the head and digs a nice shot to
00:05:07players body now he also moves out defensively fairly well as he backs off here you'll see him back up
00:05:13make players miss and then set to come inside once again with a beautiful right uppercut rocking
00:05:19pyres gets out of the way nicely pyres start to come back in and you'll see right inside here Johnson comes
00:05:26up underneath the big right uppercut rocking pyres and getting him in trouble these are the types of
00:05:32things he needs to do if he's going to be effective tonight and here he is the challenger Arthur Johnson
00:05:36and that was an absurd decision they gave him a majority decision against Jason pyres but he he won just
00:05:43about every round did Arthur Johnson 1988 US Olympian tremendous amateur career but because of his work in
00:05:50ministry didn't go pro until he was 25 former nabf flyaway champ fourth shot of the world title first
00:05:57at 118 among his four losses to Johnny Tapia by decision his 14th fight first round ko to mark two
00:06:05sharp Johnson as we mentioned earlier and also as mentioned Johnson a southpaw like awesome so just
00:06:11tuck that in the back of your mind he's three and oh since with two knockouts tough road for the guy
00:06:16feels like a forgotten man 34 you wouldn't you wonder if he's as strong at 118 as he was at the
00:06:23lower weights Bobby is he ready for this title shot and for Tim Austin in particular you know after
00:06:30speaking with Johnson Steve he claims that he's not only very ready but he's as ready as he'll ever be
00:06:34and at the age of 34 he realizes the clock is running he may not get another chance so he has to jump on
00:06:39this opportunity while it's here now certain opportunities will pop up you're not ready for him that's too bad
00:06:43but right now the rust factor could be big for both of them so this may be an even better chance than
00:06:49normal but it's awesome rusty too Johnson taking the very long walk from the dressing room led by the
00:06:56legendary Angelo Dundee who's had by his count 15 world champions including a couple of guys by the name
00:07:03of Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard
00:07:06Arthur Johnson says he will not be satisfied until he wins a world championship
00:07:18and there he is with the
00:07:26the belt in front of Tim Austin Carl King his manager and the champion southpaw Tim Austin very
00:07:35exciting brings power in both hands we just don't see him enough that's the problem he's the forgotten
00:07:42champion 92 Olympic bronze medalist at flyweight lone blemish and 21 fights a technical draw with
00:07:50Javier Diaz in 95 but a month later he outpointed Diaz got his revenge
00:07:56won the ball in 97 over the tough Belaylo Botelli as he talked about in the open
00:08:02going several rounds with a broken jaw this is fifth defense he's won 10 straight the last nine by knockout
00:08:09and as the crowd awaits the entrance of Tim Austin we'll see if the recent layoffs will affect his sharpness
00:08:17Austin who may be the most talented American-born bantamweight champion since Jeff Chandler the last man to unify the bantamweight belt
00:08:25Bobby all four of Austin's title defenses were by knockout are you anticipating number five tonight
00:08:30well Steve not only are all four of his title defenses win by knockout but all of his fights all of his wins
00:08:35are by knockout except one one decision with that one technical draw so his track record proves that it's not the exception
00:08:41but the rule that he knocks people out that's what he does so having said that i expect him to be no different
00:08:47tonight but he has the guy in front of him a lot of experience who's only been stopped once so this fight's
00:08:51going to be deep probably at the very least all right we'll see what happens Tim Austin he's got to fight
00:08:57more frequently not only to stay sharp but to stay in people's minds he's had only nine rounds in the last
00:09:0417 or 18 months and that is just not enough referee Joe Cortez checking the equipment and let's check the
00:09:12numbers as we go to the tail of the tape and the biggest disparity is in the age department at 34
00:09:18Johnson five years older than Austin height and reach almost even both came in under the 118 weight
00:09:23limit yesterday fight time weights Austin 124 Johnson 123 and the key rules for this ibf championship fight
00:09:31no standing eight count no three knockdown rule a fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round
00:09:36if an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth round the fighters rule the no contest
00:09:41after the end of round four they go to the scorecard so here at the paris las vegas we're getting ready

00:12:55knockout tonight making the fifth defense of his title here is the undefeated ibf bantamweight champion
00:13:02of the world known as the cincinnati kid tim austin
00:13:13once again joe cortez referee in charge now to give instructions
00:13:20all right gentlemen we went over the rules in the dressing room
00:13:23i expect a good clean fight i want good sportsmanlike conduct obey my commands at all
00:13:28time remember when i say break you break clean understand now these trunks here yeah these
00:13:33trucks a little high here punches are still good same thing here everything is real good if you hit
00:13:38there okay right punches are good okay touch them up remember guys i'm fair but i'm firm okay let's go
00:13:50tim austin a fast starter his three main attributes of speed accuracy and smart superior boxing skills
00:13:56tremendous hand speed sharp counter puncher power in both hands with the big left hook
00:14:01author johnson reputation as a slow starter not known as a one punch knockout guy but excellent ability
00:14:07crafty ring savvy busy throws a lot of punches he's a boxer but not a runner he'll get involved
00:14:15usually makes for good action-packed fights author johnson johnson spoke earlier yesterday that he has
00:14:22absolutely got to get into his rhythm early and at 34 i believe he's correct and what i could never
00:14:27understand bobby is why they allow them to wear the same color trunks one has a black stripe and one
00:14:33has black shoes so yeah there you go we'll figure it out well at first austin said starting off is a big
00:14:40concern then he said despite the layoff he looked to set a fast pace that the inactivity is more mental
00:14:47than physical he's been training for this since april his intent was to loosen up in the dressing
00:14:53room and be ready to dictate in the first round he's come out throwing some heavy punches right now
00:14:59johnson maybe he's looking for that rhythm but he hasn't gotten too offensive minded johnson the
00:15:03fighter with the black stripe and the black shoes he told us he hasn't had a fight in 10 months because
00:15:08there are just not a lot of people out there who want to fight him soft-spoken guy who's an ordained
00:15:14minister and a singer-songwriter of contemporary christian music an aspiring broadcaster but also
00:15:20has some cockiness he says it'll be an upset if austin beats him well austin right now is taking it to
00:15:26him especially the straight left hand right hook to the body he said he was going to start early keep a
00:15:30fast pace with the 34 year old johnson and see if he could hold up he didn't believe johnson could make
00:15:36austin feels johnson will need to make the adjustments to him and that his speed will be the big difference
00:15:46austin said boy he really missed fighting and after tonight predictably would love to unify the belts
00:15:51right left combination upstairs by austin
00:15:56he'd love to fight wba champion paulie ayala
00:15:59the division needs more stars for austin's star to shine brightly he can't get big names because
00:16:13there just aren't any right now paulie ayala is another champion little known vera paul saha from
00:16:21little known to the united states because he's from thailand as the wbc champ but others to watch it mark two sharp johnson
00:16:31when he gets out of jail jorge julio johnny bridal in that category aiden vargas danny romero
00:16:39but romero's got to fight better competition
00:16:42those gaps 112 115 118 on any given day a fighter can mature and five or six or eight pounds can
00:16:51switch him to full division steve yeah 122 you got some good names eric morales marco antonio barrera
00:16:59austin said he'd like to unify then move up as high as 126 where the prince nasim hamed is house
00:17:06so tim now you see the way he's covering up like this here he's trying to stay tight on you so you
00:17:25can't get him with no clean shot all right start hitting his arms all right your double jabs on
00:17:31tomorrow and remember we worked about that he bent over this side on you tim fire your left uppercut
00:17:36under there and then take it to your head give him a rinse come on there you go you're doing excellent
00:17:42tim just don't gamble don't you back up from this sucker all right i want you to be first all the time
00:17:48okay all right this is angelo dundee now i mean it i want first first first you're block i want you to
00:17:56come all right don't block block block count that sucker all right all right don't let it all hang
00:18:02out all right tim tim one of the best boxing motivators of all time angelo dundee in the corner of
00:18:11arthur johnson tim austin with with aaron snowell who was in frankie randall's corner when he upset julio
00:18:17cesar chavez round two
00:18:23tim austin the champion of the all red author johnson lee the challenger in the red with the black stripe
00:18:29and the black shoes austin's dictating the pace and he's also dictating the distance a lot of it
00:18:35behind this jab and nice combination generally the rule of thumb bobby as you know against south
00:18:41boys move to your left circle to your left but you've demonstrated to me against certain south boys
00:18:45throw hooks to the body then the right uppercut how would you fight austin well i'll tell you what
00:18:49with austin he he has a nice sharp jab you have to neutralize that jab and also his best weapon that
00:18:54straight left hand so you move to your left his left hand is not in line in the power line your right
00:18:59hand would be provided you can get there without walking with his right hook easier said than done
00:19:04watch the other foot i asked tim austin how he stayed sharp during the long layoff he said he worked out
00:19:11in the gym with former junior weatherweight champion aaron fryer also a a cincinnati guy worked a lot on
00:19:19his balance prior also kept him psyched up and motivated prior one of the all-time greats before
00:19:26succumbing to personal demons now 44 destroyed two modern-day legends antonio cervantes and alexis
00:19:36arguello not a bad guy to have on your corner
00:19:45kind of a slapping jab there by by austin yeah once again he likes to keep a certain distance he
00:19:51uses that jab as a feeler a point getter but to keep that distance hold on the range he likes
00:19:56joe cortez cautioning austin not to hold johnson's head down
00:20:00he's got a bag of tricks as austin he's only 29 but very crafty 29 is not that young in this business
00:20:11i'm thinking about it
00:20:19johnson with a great amateur career 86 world champion 10 time national champion like him 88 olympics he was
00:20:26ousted in the quarterfinals and he beat michael carbajal and kennedy mckinney before turning pro
00:20:34he feels that nothing's short of a world title
00:20:38fulfill his dreams and fulfill what he did accomplish as an amateur as a pro it's fizzled a bit
00:20:45less than 30 seconds remaining in round two scheduled for 12. the ibf bantamweight championship on the line
00:20:51for cooking right off the net by author johnson and then a good left right combination to the body
00:20:58on the return by austin
00:21:02austin
00:21:04jumping on johnson now really opening up here in late round two but johnson's game he comes forward
00:21:11and he's going to be doing perfect brother you see how he keeps going over to this side when you
00:21:23jab him triple jab bend your legs and send you got to send that left hand up under you start going
00:21:27and hitting them over here that body
00:21:29you see where the uh feet they always step on each other's feet southpaw right hander southpaw right
00:21:43hander they both step forward with their lead feet the lead feet are connected
00:21:49a little back holding behind the head and hitting uh a little warning to austin
00:21:52watch the jab he works in behind you have three jabs and a straight left hand left hand not as clean
00:22:01but that's how he needs to work in there again with coming back with the jab in combination johnson
00:22:05just not answering any punches and he's certainly not making us miss enough
00:22:10well as you would expect from these two 118 counters the accident at times can be
00:22:16a fast and furious round three scheduled for 12.
00:22:28johnson who relies more on technique than power but he's willing to trade
00:22:34which can be a dangerous prospect against a fighter like tim austin who has power in both hands
00:22:40and in particular a wicked left hook
00:22:46and in this case a right hook since he's a southpaw
00:22:55right now johnson is not making austin pay at all not putting enough pressure on him
00:22:59oh not not getting inside and forcing a different fight he needs to make this a different fight he
00:23:04can't win from out here that was a slip by johnson no knock down about a minute gone by in round three
00:23:10slipping a little pull down
00:23:15beautiful bodywork there by austin straight left hand their body followed by right hook
00:23:19every once in a while johnson wings are right but it's very wide and it's easy for austin then to
00:23:25counter inside with a left-right combination and it's usually one and done he throws one big one and
00:23:29then that's it not enough no follow-up not good combination punching
00:23:33that's it not enough but it's not enough but it's not enough but it's not enough but it's not enough
00:23:38johnson number two rated
00:23:42board in east st louis illinois now is in o'fowl in illinois
00:23:47has had three previous title shots the last one in 98 he was knocked out in the first round by
00:23:57another lefty mark johnson for the ibf super flyweight title this is his first title fight at 118
00:24:07won 200 amateur fights lost 19 tim austin also with the a stellar amateur career
00:24:13bronze medalist to flyweight at the 92 barcelona olympics
00:24:18right now steve again they're staying at the distance that austin wants to be at johnson not
00:24:22cutting that down not compromising or neutralizing any of the punches that austin has in his arsenal
00:24:28paying for it too and on round after round tim austin the champion the busier of the two
00:24:36setting up that left with a nice double right jab
00:24:43again there's that wide left hand by johnson and he opens himself up
00:24:46and he got caught with a nice counter right hook from austin i think it's stunning just a bit
00:24:56tim austin has been off for around eight months
00:25:00he said because fights just kept falling through he was off ten months before the previous fight he
00:25:06said because of managerial and personal problems
00:25:21you're making this guy do everything you're doing nothing you gotta stop
00:25:24i want you to take charge forget that goofy right hand here's a replay of the slip combination pull
00:25:33down as johnson's coming in excuse me yeah as johnson's coming in the hands went right behind the head
00:25:40and just pushed him down johnson throws a wide left hook and gets countered with the right hook
00:25:46on the ear and the left uppercut uppercut not landing too clean
00:25:53and we got one toward the end of the round that goes south of the border austin makes a nice slip but
00:25:58that one is low
00:25:59that was right at the bell
00:26:08as we look at tim austin you hear the the words of angelo dundito author johnson forget that silly
00:26:14right hand he's been just so wide and telegraphing that that punch it has been very detrimental to
00:26:21johnson after three complete rounds johnson has still failed to put together any effective combinations
00:26:26and his individual punches just really haven't been that crisp
00:26:32austin's crisp right there johnson right now this round came out jabbing came out stepping
00:26:39to austin a little more starting to look like he might be effective but backing right off as
00:26:44soon as austin pumps out the jab austin with a left right off the head of johnson his fifth title defense
00:26:56all four defenses by knockout
00:27:0216 of austin's 20 wins have come within four rounds
00:27:10and this is round four
00:27:13austin 20 on one with 19 knockouts talked about austin fighting with a broken jaw against
00:27:18uh until they and i'll tell you what two against sergio aguilar in 99 he stopped aguilar on nine but
00:27:24he had to get off the floor to do it steve so you know this is the champion of heart and courage yeah he was totally dominating to that point
00:27:33when he got caught with a countering hook by augula
00:27:37that was in march of 99 in the fourth round he came back to win tko round nine
00:27:45midway through the fourth scheduled for 12 for the ibf mana white belt
00:27:55austin with some head fakes some interesting footwork there too he stepped twice side to side side to
00:28:01side and then threw a right uppercut lead which is sometimes dangerous
00:28:09two nice right hands by johnson his two best punches of the night so far and back comes austin
00:28:13with a left right to the head
00:28:16tim austin smacking right left to the chest area of johnson i think austin's punch is much more effective
00:28:24that counter overhand left was serious it stung johnson you could see his feet wobble just a bit
00:28:31austin even though he's just 118 pounds unleashes with a lot of power
00:28:39long regarded as one of boxing's best kept secrets he just needs to fight more frequently to get his
00:28:45name out there and to fight some champions unify the titles all the great fighters throughout history
00:28:52got their reputations by beating other great fighters and austin's going to be no different he's going to
00:28:56be considered great north star he has to beat great fighters and he's very mindful of that he's
00:29:01cognizant of ring history he was talking very eloquently to us yesterday about american jeff chanter the
00:29:09last man away back in the 80s to unify the titles he wants to do just that
00:29:13forget the guy's head forget the guy's head stay busy put the ice on you all right yeah all right don't
00:29:30blow your nose no put the ice bag on in the back
00:29:38arca don't fight
00:29:41johnson landing a couple good right hands in that round probably his best round although
00:29:45i don't think he won the round but clearly his best round he lands a couple of nice right hands
00:29:49there's a hook counter hook
00:29:50trying but not really getting too effective again good right hands in that round probably his best
00:29:57round although i don't think he won the round but clearly his best round he lands a couple of nice
00:30:01right hands there's a hook counter hook trying but not really getting too effective again he's staying
00:30:08too far outside this is too much of a distance for him it's a better distance for austin austin countering
00:30:13him stepping around and also missing a few counters
00:30:24austin has been the effective aggressor in this fight good ring generalship that's what the judges
00:30:29look for as we enter round five and neither fighter in any real serious trouble thus far in this ibf
00:30:35bantamweight title fight no knockdowns through the first four rounds but austin has dominated and he's
00:30:42just come out in this round with some bad intentions two strong punches he's talked around almost as if
00:30:47he's looking to pick up the pace for that sixth round prediction he had talked about in the interview
00:30:53yeah he said for some unknown reason the number six stands out of his mind
00:31:00maybe maybe he should visit the casino
00:31:04either that or a lot of
00:31:12good thing he's not fighting andrew six heads lewis
00:31:15what's a backhand punch what's a backhand who is supposed to be on the car tomorrow night against
00:31:20james page for the wba welterweight title but that was scrapped because
00:31:24page is a no-show some managerial uh
00:31:27dispute contract dispute there less than two minutes remaining in round five johnson weighing
00:31:32it away but getting nowhere austin comes right back
00:31:37johnson's hand speed not quite as good as austin's and he's missing with some of the shots
00:31:41and some of the shots are just being blocked and his hands are not getting
00:31:44brought back properly he's getting counted very well by austin
00:31:47rink russ could be a major factor for arthur johnson who has not fought in about 10 months
00:32:02his last fight october of 99 a ridiculous majority decision over jason pyres
00:32:10i saw the fight as well steve i thought he dominated pyres and won the fight cleanly
00:32:17johnson austin continues to have his way bipping and bopping off the head of johnson nice overhand
00:32:25left there too sort of shook up johnson a little bit johnson just cannot find anything to land
00:32:30cleanly with and it's frustrating austin's speed just too overwhelming
00:32:36we saw that with zap judah and jaron malette last week and good defense here by austin as well able to
00:32:42duck away and block shots by johnson
00:32:49austin with tremendous confidence back pedaling and scoring and as fight fans know it is not easy
00:32:56to fight going backwards as julio cesar chavez oh tough body shot a left right to the belly by austin
00:33:12go back up even slapping punches by austin are getting through that was a terrific left hand of
00:33:21the adam's apple by austin hey baby there you go excellent tim excellent that's what we're talking
00:33:35about knock him up get that mouthpiece out of there rudy wrist and mouth watch austin see this jab this
00:33:41is his jab hand right here he takes it jab sets it up jabs again jabs again comes all the way across
00:33:46he gets johnson back then fires that straight left hand keeping the distance setting it up working
00:33:52keeping johnson at bay working in behind that jab another two jabs in that left hand that wasn't as
00:33:57clean as the one he landed before but that is exactly what he's supposed to do set up everything behind
00:34:01that jab he keeps his distance he gets the points and sets up a big power punch excellent job we're in
00:34:08round six all right let's let's let's pick the pace up come on let's start picking it up all right come
00:34:17on that's bad news for author johnson if he picks up the pace even more and this is the round austin
00:34:23predicted he would knock out author johnson austin thoroughly in command over the first five rounds and
00:34:29he looks very comfortable fighting coming forward or retreating he is a tough target the catch for
00:34:35the veteran johnson johnson doesn't have enough pop on his punches and he's not getting enough of them
00:34:41through to get any respect he's not getting his pound of flesh austin's keeping him at range with the jab
00:34:46firing big wild shots whenever he feels like it because he's not paying for
00:34:59johnson falling right into those punches by tim austin good left hand a straight left to the head by austin
00:35:07it's been all tim austin there hasn't been much offense good left hook off the shoulder though
00:35:21no offense from arthur johnson they're both tall and lean fighters for 118 pounds and i think that
00:35:27maybe just maybe johnson has underestimated the strength and power that austin possesses doesn't
00:35:32look like a big strong guy the punch is very crisp very clean and very well i posed the question to
00:35:36you uh earlier could the boxing skills and the experience in the ring savvy of johnson be enough
00:35:42to offset the speed and power of tim austin it looks like it's an emphatic no look at that
00:35:48tempering his face is tim austin i'll agree with that emphatic no he's not doing any of the things you
00:35:52need to do he's not getting inside although it's a nice counter hook but it's one and done he needs to do more
00:35:58he needs to be busy he has to mutualize what austin is doing well namely to jab in the left hand
00:36:07tim austin of the all red trunks and arthur johnson the challenger of the red with the black stripe
00:36:14and when we widen out you'll see the black shoes of arthur johnson
00:36:19austin predicted as mentioned a sixth round ko but interestingly he only has one
00:36:24sixth round knockout in his 21 fight career and done on the seventh round
00:36:33less than a minute remaining round six
00:36:40have you watched their feet too here johnson's not really staying outside
00:36:44austin's right foot he's allowing austin to move to his right as he wants keeping johnson in the
00:36:50the middle of harm's way with that left hand
00:37:00how frustrating this must be to arthur johnson
00:37:04straight left hand right on the nose by austin
00:37:06johnson and ordained minister has also done missionary work he turned pro at the late age of 25
00:37:20nine years ago
00:37:23austin continues to stick and land with the jack
00:37:26coming up tomorrow night here on showtime evander holyfield versus john ruiz
00:37:34for the vacant wba heavyweight championship yesterday afternoon they had the weigh in let's take a bit
00:37:40of a look there holyfield at 37 turns 38 in october always looks in great shape
00:37:45222.221 pounds for evander holyfield 221. that's his heaviest ever
00:38:01previous high 218. now john ruiz stepping up 28.
00:38:06224. 224 pounds for john ruiz 224. he weighed in three pounds heavier than holyfield seven pounds
00:38:22less than his last fight in december holyfield a four to one favorite to beat john ruiz tomorrow night
00:38:28and you can see it right here on showtime what's that got a foot watch the foot round seven scheduled
00:38:35for 12 for the ibf batom white title tim austin in charge he's in the all red trunks
00:38:41johnson with the black stripe
00:38:46here's the online tally no surprise here bobby no this is not a surprise whatsoever johnson hasn't
00:38:52done enough he didn't come close to winning a round he just needs to work more land more be
00:38:57more effective with everything he's past the point of no return he not only has to win every round here
00:39:02on out but he has to win at least one of them by two points or more to win these fights and he is not
00:39:08a knockout artist arthur johnson he has only 12 of his 24 of his 20 victories by knockout and again austin
00:39:17landing repeatedly with lefts and rights looking ultra confident
00:39:21going for his 21st victory he only has one blemish it was a technical draw against javier diaz which he
00:39:29avenged in the next fight 20 on one with 19 knockouts there's a good left off the left here by johnson
00:39:37probably his best punch of the night but again steve it's just one big shot and that's it he's looking
00:39:41to load up he's not going to stop waspin he doesn't have that kind of power he needs to do combination
00:39:46punching like an angel dundee said get on top of him stay on top another left hand off the neck area
00:39:52by austin if you're wondering johnson's been down once in his pro career against mark two sharp johnson
00:39:58in 98 that was a first round knockout for two sharp he was now once as an amateur
00:40:05two nice left hooks that landed there for johnson what happened on the third left hook was austin
00:40:09slipped right under it and moved out nicely
00:40:17johnson continues to press forward but not getting very far
00:40:22because of austin's defense and then he comes up big offensively look at this quarry
00:40:28he's starting to make a statement here maybe wants to close out the sixth round
00:40:33beautiful right hooks to the body straight left hands right down the middle
00:40:40hey body shots by austin then he goes upstairs
00:40:43oh he's around late on the prediction speed yeah a barrage by tim austin if you get the feeling
00:40:50the feeling he'll accept it even around later
00:40:57less than 30 seconds remaining in the seventh round a very difficult one for the challenger
00:41:03author johnson the number two contender
00:41:07former nabf flyweight champ lost three previous tries at various world titles in two divisions
00:41:14this one not going well either final seconds of round seven
00:41:22another big one for the champions
00:41:27premade uh
00:41:33hey hey Tim there you go breathe easy breathe easy breathe up
00:41:38that's it yeah
00:41:41just talked about the fact that underway and johnson threw a left hook
00:41:44bought austin through his second left hook bought austin and then austin makes the adjustments
00:41:48the third left hook goes right over his head as we roll the tape you'll see a beautiful hook
00:41:53Gets Austin clean
00:41:55Arthur tries again figures that the first one landed maybe second will and now over the top of his head
00:42:01Okay, this one's gonna go right over awesome is gonna move out right to the side. It's gonna be sweet
00:42:06Makes the adjustments knows the hooks come and slips out steps
00:42:09Looks very classy that's ring general general ship at its best
00:42:14Go to your left go to your left and fire
00:42:18Do it now come on
00:42:20a very frustrated
00:42:23Angelo Dundee
00:42:25urging Johnson to
00:42:27Circle to his left, which is supposed to do against left-handers
00:42:31And he hasn't been doing enough that we heard to Ron Millett last week say
00:42:36He didn't do enough with that against Zabjudo. Although I think it would have been immaterial anyway
00:42:42Round eight scheduled for 12 IVF Bantaway championship Austin's won every round from this vantage point
00:42:50Austin from the fighting city of Cincinnati that produced the great Aaron Pryor and Ezra Charles
00:42:56One of the most underrated heavyweights of all time
00:42:59One of the most underrated heavyweights of all time
00:43:01But tremendous competition was often outweighed
00:43:03Weighed sometimes by as much as 40 pounds you want every amateur tournament he ever entered which is amazing
00:43:10Once split open the nose of Rocky Marciano the referee told Rocky if it worsens, I'll have to stop the fight
00:43:17Rocky knocked him out
00:43:19In the next round I believe
00:43:23Little Cincinnati ring history in tribute to Tim Austin
00:43:32There's that leaping left hook again by Johnson starting to find a home. But once again, it's not a big punch
00:43:37We need to follow it up with a right hand then a second left hook and maybe an uppercut
00:43:40Keep the combination going
00:43:41And once again, we just saw also make the adjustments to slip out of the way that hook
00:43:45He knows it's coming. He's getting out of the way
00:43:47No signs of ring rust whatsoever
00:43:50No signs of ring rust whatsoever
00:43:51No signs of ring rust whatsoever
00:43:54For Tim Austin
00:43:56Austin doing a little dancing around now
00:43:58A lot of dancers, Steven. I wonder if maybe he's getting a little tired from all the punches he's done
00:44:02He's starting to look a little like Junior Witter the Englishman who fought Judah on the Tyson Savarese card, but Austin
00:44:10With a lot more talent
00:44:15Austin continues to throw and land that effective right J
00:44:22Well, Arthur Johnson just looks weathered and frustrated
00:44:27Another couple of good answers by Austin
00:44:29No answers by Johnson
00:44:47A totally lopsided performance in favor of the champion Tim Austin
00:44:52Austin
00:45:02Putting on a show here making a statement displaying all of his main attributes as a boxer his superior boxing skills
00:45:09His power his movement his defense
00:45:12But I'd love to see him in there with a guy like Paulie Ayala
00:45:13But I'd love to see him in there with a guy like Paulie Ayala
00:45:17There you go, relax, take a deep breath, let it out slow
00:45:18Yeah, you're hitting him Tim
00:45:19How you feel?

00:45:39How you feel?

00:45:41Huh?

00:45:44All right

00:45:46Brother
00:45:47Bite down on that mouthpiece

00:45:50Make sure you bite down on that mouthpiece
00:45:51All right

00:45:57Look and go for it
00:45:58Uh huh
00:45:59Take it all along
00:46:00We got two rounds you want
00:46:02But we got to knock your son bitch out
00:46:04You know what I mean son?
00:46:05Man you got to put punches together man
00:46:07You got to knock them out
00:46:08Come on
00:46:09All right
00:46:10This is not a two and up fight
00:46:11Come on
00:46:12Come on
00:46:13Get it all now
00:46:14All right
00:46:15When you cut them off, you eat them off
00:46:16Okay
00:46:17You were fed even in the gym
00:46:18Come on
00:46:19The frustration
00:46:20And the voice of Angelo Dundee
00:46:22Gets stronger and stronger each round
00:46:23Round nine scheduled for 12
00:46:26Trainers have a reputation for saying
00:46:28Anything to motivate a fighter
00:46:30To say he won two rounds
00:46:31Might not be a stretch
00:46:32It would be an out and out lie
00:46:33Remember the words
00:46:35You're blowing it son
00:46:36Here we go
00:46:37Oh yeah
00:46:38Sugar Ray Leonard Tommy Hearn
00:46:39Number one
00:46:40Angelo Dundee's words
00:46:42As mentioned
00:46:45Pauly Ayala
00:46:46Might be fighting
00:46:47Johnny Tappy
00:46:48Had to catch weight
00:46:49In the very near future
00:46:50And that might lead
00:46:51Tim Austin out in the pole
00:46:53That would be a terrific
00:46:58Phantom weight fight
00:46:59Between Austin and Ayala
00:47:01To unify those two tunnels
00:47:02That's not for lack of trying here
00:47:04By Johnson too
00:47:05Johnson keeps coming
00:47:06Keeps trying
00:47:07But he just doesn't have the speed
00:47:08He doesn't have the power
00:47:09Don't wait
00:47:10Don't wait
00:47:11Don't wait
00:47:12Don't wait
00:47:13Don't wait
00:47:14Don't wait
00:47:15Don't wait
00:47:16Don't wait
00:47:17Put it again
00:47:19Perennial world-ranked contender
00:47:20Arthur Johnson
00:47:23Always seems to be the bridesmaid not a one-punch knockout guy
00:47:27And he is at the point in this fight where he's gonna need a knockout
00:47:3624 fights think about that only 24 fights. He's 34 years old, but that's because he started so late
00:47:43He was 25 when he turned pro doesn't have as much experience as he needs
00:47:47To offset any of the tools right now that austin has he's starting to land that looks a little bit of a game
00:47:52It's only one and done. He's not
00:47:54He's never gonna floor and keep running for lost in one shot. Now. This is a real uphill battle for Arthur Johnson
00:48:03Austin continues to land
00:48:06And land effectively
00:48:09Many of those are clean punches johnson's gonna feel this in the morning
00:48:13Come on baby
00:48:16He is taking a beating
00:48:19He hasn't been down
00:48:28Very rarely tonight has Austin even been
00:48:36He must be so thrilled that happened
00:48:38He's a nice combination by johnson. He followed up the red uppercut and now he's chasing awesome, but not cutting off the ring
00:48:48The only thing that this could be at this particular stage is a moral victory for arthur johnson because tim austin has won all of his
00:48:56Title defenses by knockout
00:48:58Oh, but one and I'll tell you what this one looks like a decision right now. This is johnson's best round by far
00:49:05But that streak looks to be in jeopardy
00:49:09Tonight however, he is cruising along to a very comfortable victory by decision
00:49:14If johnson stays on his feet
00:49:20Heading for the bell
00:49:28There you go sit back in the stool sit back in the stool brother let's get you refreshed how you feel
00:49:33Now listen to your man
00:49:35Hey tim just start sitting down in that pocket a little bit more fire don't don't be backing up okay
00:49:41Now we're in the tent these are you around let's take control of this fight
00:49:46Keep your hands up don't run into nothing. Let's start banging
00:49:49All right, let's get him out of here now
00:49:52All right, he's around here. He's getting desperate now. Let's now. Let's we got this guy's body use it
00:49:58All right, my piece
00:50:01You're gonna do it for us, son. Come on. Yeah, do it for everybody. Come on. You're a champion. Use it. All right
00:50:07We got this the tenth round for me. You only got three fucking rounds. Let's go
00:50:11No, no time to waste got no time to wait
00:50:16The always colorful angelo dundee another thing that trainers are notorious for
00:50:28That last round steve is good argument could be made that johnson won that round
00:50:31He affected wrestling his best punches and john and austin took most of the round kind of all so an argument could be made that he won that round
00:50:41Well, the superior skills of tim austin just overwhelming author johnson's not that johnson isn't trying
00:50:51He's just not on the same skill level as austin
00:51:00Right off the the head with the right hand by austin nice right hand right down the middle by johnson
00:51:06And he's trying to second one
00:51:10That right landing repeatedly
00:51:12Even the soft probing shot is landing getting through by austin
00:51:19There's a little ticking right uppercut to the neck by austin
00:51:22He's catching on to that left hook that's coming he slips under and counters real nice
00:51:38Once again, he does that
00:51:41Pretty maneuver defensively and then he comes rifling forward with a combination
00:51:52Midway through the 10th round on what has developed into an easy night for the judges
00:52:07Pretty good crowd on hand here at the paris hotel grand ballroom the biggest ballroom
00:52:12In las vegas seats just under 9 000 and this is sort of a warm-up for tomorrow night's holyfield louise
00:52:19Heavyweight championship fight which you can see here on showtime
00:52:23As it turns out not as only is austin's offense too much for johnson
00:52:27You can't figure him out defensively either starting to slip all the shots now blocking everything else and the counters are still right on the money
00:52:35Austin just surgically dissecting and taking johnson apart
00:52:41It started from the opening belt it's been very consistent
00:52:53May not be a knockout for the champion, but he is telling the boxing world that he is back after the long eight-month layoff
00:53:00And this is not second or third level opposition and author johnson
00:53:10He is a solid veteran pro
00:53:18We talked about earlier one of the keys to victory that jab frostley set up everything set up the right of the counters straight left
00:53:25working perfect
00:53:30there you go put that ice back there in the back got it excellent tim you're doing it brother
00:53:36good job
00:53:37just
00:53:38breathe and listen to the air
00:53:40here
00:53:41take a little water drink a little bit of it
00:53:44that's it
00:53:46bobby let's go inside the ropes and further dissect this fight well let's watch the champion working
00:53:51behind the jab sets up the straight left hand working behind the jab again sets up the combinations
00:54:00the solid red trunks the champion is doing his job working behind that jab setting up his combinations his counters
00:54:07working up everything off that jab jab right hand left hook jab left hand right hook
00:54:12southpaw's always confused he's going to be desperate now he's going to be desperate he's going to come at you strong he's desperate
00:54:19you heard the words of aaron snowell announcing loudly to austin as we enter round 11 that johnson's
00:54:25desperate he's going to come at you austin has never been past 10 rounds in his 21 fight career
00:54:31johnson's been past 10 six times he's four up two down with two late round knockouts
00:54:37we have seen some late round come from behind knockout victories here on showtime
00:54:41but arthur johnson has given new indications that he has that kind of ko power he just landed the best
00:54:48right hand he's thrown all night and he rocked lost a little bit but again he's not a one punch
00:54:52knockout artist and it was one and done was not on top of him then he followed and by the same token
00:54:57he hasn't even managed to connect with tim austin cleanly in this fight or at least the season the
00:55:05hands out get him out let's go we are into the championship rounds a fight that is being
00:55:14completely controlled by the champion and the shot at red fronts tim austin
00:55:27big right hook there by awesome i think he had johnson a little bit of trouble
00:55:39arthur johnson's fourth world title shot are there just some fighter's body that just cannot get over
00:55:46that title hump you know it did happen steve sometimes championship opportunities come too late
00:55:52sometimes they come to division we have a guy like a marvelous marvin hagger who just dominates
00:55:57for so long nobody beats him austin spinning johnson around and hammering away with lefts and rights
00:56:06that was probably the best give and take exchange by both fighters in quite some time
00:56:10both landing clean hard solid punches and counter punches
00:56:15as we approach the final minute of round 11.
00:56:18if you're just tuning in tim austin the champion of the all red had predicted a sixth round knockout
00:56:26nevertheless he has been in complete command throughout
00:56:33austin's first fight in about eight months
00:56:35and his fifth title defense he's undefeated
00:56:50with a swing and a miss and almost wound up in the first row
00:57:05austin ever the gentleman just stepped away and didn't even swing
00:57:07he swung there though few of those punches though blocked by the forearms and gloves of johnson
00:57:19i'll tell you what though austin who's had the long layoff looks just as sharp here in the 11th as he did in the first
00:57:33in the one i'll tell you what in the corner that was probably the best combination by both fighters
00:57:43both landed pretty cleanly johnson getting in some of the best shots but again he's not hurting
00:57:47also he's not getting to pound the flesh and certainly not going to stop him super slow
00:57:52motors the straight left hand being eaten by johnson he comes back with a nice body shot
00:57:57he lost the combination but he got some he got some respect but it's too late
00:58:08little slip that's that sneaky slipper talking about he's getting adjusted to that left hook
00:58:12he's awesome he's out of it so much so that johnson's falling out of the room
00:58:16the 2000 version of the rope-a-dope
00:58:18well here we go this is it off the johnson obviously needs a dramatic knockout to win this
00:58:25fight take the championship away from austin they touch gloves for the 12th and final round
00:58:31tim austin totally dominating the fight
00:58:38and the only way johnson can win is by putting austin on the floor
00:58:43does he have it in him he's not only got to put him on the floor he's got to keep him there right
00:58:52if he knocks him down twice in the round he's still not going to pick up enough points in this round
00:58:56bring him even close to even
00:59:01but johnson just can't seem to even get close austin's just too fast he's got the hand speed the foot movement
00:59:08but i think you see here a nice right hand by johnson i think you see here a relatively young 34
00:59:17johnson keeping a good pace his best rounds have been the last three
00:59:28as mentioned he has had two late round knockouts but not against people the caliber of tim austin
00:59:38that's what's the dancing around flinging the left story austin winning this fight
00:59:46for a good part in retreat
00:59:50how about that left uppercut to the jaw
00:59:52by austin that's where the phrase effective aggressive effective aggressive you can come in
00:59:57and get beat up muhammad ali beat a lot of men on the way and beat him up well
01:00:02oh a straight right hand out of nowhere by johnson that got the attention momentarily
01:00:06of austin who continues to back pedal but he's telegraphing a little bit now to his ladies tired
01:00:13and it's one at a time oh another straight right hand by arthur johnson
01:00:20austin eating some leather here in the final round with a minute
01:00:22and austin continues to fight going backwards
01:00:31and austin continues to fight going backwards
01:00:36a case of too little too late for arthur johnson but countering with rights and lefts and peppering the head of johnson tim austin
01:01:03and it's a good comeback fight for tim austin after the long bout of inactivity
01:01:22all tim austin
01:01:29it goes the distance
01:01:35probably safe to say the two sharp johnson ko loss
01:01:39was just an aberration not the rule because austin very credible very good champion and unloaded quite well
01:01:46johnson absorbed it all but this will be austin's first title defense that is not a knockout but you know what he'll take
01:01:54after the long layoff
01:01:57when it comes to titles a win is a win by an inch or a mile yep
01:02:01you know that
01:02:03it'll be his fifth successful defense of the ibf bantamweight belt which he's held since july of 1997
01:02:09he went out and did what a great champion like him good job man he went out and performed anyway in spite of
01:02:18not because manager carl king on the left of your screen with tim austin and he got some rounds that he needed
01:02:23you know he hasn't been in the ring a long time and got the round that's right yeah you hear aaron snowell

01:05:26tim austin if you took part we thank you so much for your uh participation so
01:05:32tim austin wins it in a landslide and uh the question now is who's going to be next for austin but
01:05:40another issue with tim austin is that he's just got to fight more frequently and get out there stay
01:05:45sharp and also keep his face in public view yes he has to keep his face in his name in public view he
01:05:51has to find those paul iallis and you know johnny tapia types to keep that star rising so a successful
01:05:57night indeed for tim austin against the 34 year old veteran author johnson we look forward to seeing
01:06:04austin again hopefully in the near future maybe he'll have to move up and wait what do you think about
01:06:10that well you know there's a whole host of great fighters at the weight classes first and second right
01:06:14above him 122 even 126 wouldn't be bad yeah he's got some big names up there too marco antonio barrera
01:06:21prince nazine morales well he's at 126 right yeah sure yeah well we'll see what he does

01:06:54and um i feel like i'm at the right time at the right position and one thing for sure it is the biggest
01:07:02fight of my career is for the heavyweight champion and also i'm fighting evander holyfield he's a great
01:07:08fighter don't get me wrong but i'm a better fighter this fight is important and i don't take john
01:07:16ruiz for granted i'm taking this fight because i haven't finished my goal my goal is to be honest
01:07:23to be the heavyweight champion of the world and i take it one fight at a time and you know i'm blessed
01:07:28enough to know that this is a title fight that allows me to be back in the position for ultimately what i
