00:00:00the finest featherweight championship ever held they all occurred right here in the sports pavilion
00:00:07at caesar's talus and tonight we have a doubleheader lined up for you the ibf lightweight
00:00:12championship will see the champion jimmy paul defend against greg haugen and the vacant wbc
00:00:18super well-awake title will go to either number one ranked john mugabe or number two dwayne thomas
00:00:24good evening everybody i'm tim ryan with gil clancy and we are ringside here at this sold-out
00:00:30sports pavilion and gil i think tonight these two bouts that are upcoming should be in the category
00:00:36of those that we just described great championship efforts of the past well tim the thing i like
00:00:41about these fights are we don't have any washed up fighters looking for a payday we don't have any
00:00:46young kids that they're rushing into a championship fight every fighter is a seasoned fighter they're
00:00:50at the peak of their careers i'm looking for some real good fights in the case in the case tim of
00:00:55jimmy paul they call him the ringmaster because he doesn't make mistakes in the ring the people in
00:01:00vegas they love greg haugen because of excitement excitement in the way he wants to win then we have
00:01:05dwayne thomas another well-schooled drunk fighter and of course mugabe what can we say about him
00:01:10the beast well the excitement he provided in the haggler fight was really something certainly
00:01:15established himself as a fan favorite even though he lost his only fight against marvelous marvin
00:01:20haggler well jimmy paul tonight is a young man who's still really seeking the recognition
00:01:25that he feels he deserves always it's camacho they talk about and edwin rosario perhaps it is time
00:01:31for his moment in the sun
00:01:33like many other world champions jimmy paul drives a big car
00:01:43and like a recent lightweight champion living stone bramble paul enjoys his pets
00:01:58but that's where the similarities end jimmy paul is a family man who has stayed close to his roots
00:02:08the earnings from his fights have been invested in real estate paul owns most of the houses on this
00:02:17detroit street
00:02:25the only visible signs of his boxing career are the trophies and pictures that adorn the paul dining
00:02:31room in this house jimmy is the undisputed champion and his career is the favorite topic of conversation
00:02:38which one of your fights do you think the hardest one you had uh i think arroyo was the toughest fight
00:02:51arroyo tough puncher real hard for me to pull that victory out it really was you took care of him
00:02:55so easily why why was he so tough i mean you took care of him like easy to me well arroyo's a good
00:03:01puncher a good puncher strong fighting that he always tried to the bell run but that was a crisis fight
00:03:08was actually a fight up in there where i know about when i got my winning championship or i'm gonna
00:03:12lose the title and uh it's gonna be tough for me to get another shot after taking the title from arroyo
00:03:20paul went on to defend the championship against an old foe from his amateur days rockin robin blake
00:03:31well i had to give blake a chance to play play around with for a few minutes to the blake had but
00:03:36after i got tired and i had everybody food i just went on and took blake on out
00:03:43the defeat of blake erased any doubts that jimmy paul deserved at least a share of the lightweight crown
00:03:48jimmy and his family believe he deserved more the fight i really like to see you fight
00:03:53the fight with camacho yeah yeah yeah yeah i know you're not camacho
00:03:59the skills you know come on they don't have all the skills that a lot of people think he has he just
00:04:03showbiz he's a showbiz fighter when it comes down to fighting i think you're knocking him out
00:04:07yeah the problem is getting the chomp in the ring paul has had to wait in the wings while camacho has
00:04:14occupied center stage if he can get the macho man or wba champ edwin rosario in the ring
00:04:20it would mean a big payday and if he were to defeat either one he would finally receive recognition he
00:04:25your way come down and make a unification fight at the right weight so he's supposed to be at instead
00:04:41of moving up running and hiding i think uh the fact that he's been champion now for over a year
00:04:47it's finally psychologically i think uh being accepted by him as an individual to the point
00:04:53where he's beginning to become more aggressive in his thinking more confident and to the point
00:04:58where to some degree he's becoming even arrogant which i like because that was the main factors
00:05:02i think that was missing in his makeup uh right now he feels that he could knock out a hectare camacho
00:05:07edwin rosario very easily he don't feel that there's any fight in the world in the lightweight
00:05:12division that could even stand up to him
00:05:29well maybe it will be jimmy paul's time on showtime tonight to show that he is uh as worthy a champion
00:05:34as camacho and edwin rosario he believes he is we know he has a known quantity we know what his skills
00:05:40are greg haugen the challenger more of an unknown one thing about him though unbeaten in 19 fights
00:05:45and he's shown he can take a punch yes he has but again against jimmy paul he's in with a constant
00:05:50and professional jimmy paul just doesn't make mistakes we used to say that he lulls you to sleep
00:05:55and then puts you to sleep but since he's become champion he has a lot more confidence in himself
00:05:59hits you with a lot of combination punches greg haugen lives in las vegas now the people here they
00:06:04just love him because of his great competitive spirit his ability to take a punch and rally back but
00:06:09against jimmy paul i think he's going to have to take a lot of punches and do a lot of rallying back
00:06:13should be a great fight well he is the underdog there is no question about his being a tough guy
00:06:18indeed he actually fought in tough guy contests in alaska an interesting and colorful background
00:06:39i started boxing at five i was um pretty much a small kid for my age and i was always coming home
00:07:03crying when i started fighting the smallest weight was 55 pounds and i didn't weigh 55 pounds i probably
00:07:09weighed about 45 so i was fighting bigger guys but uh you know it got me used to the bigger guys that
00:07:18used to beat me up and uh you know after a while they didn't pick on me anymore and uh that i'd go
00:07:24around beating up kids that used to beat me up i paid them back for what they did to me
00:07:29greg quit amateur boxing at 15 and after moving to alaska to earn his living as a sheet metal worker
00:07:36he started again in tough man contests you know i fought one guy called the yukon crusher
00:07:43he weighed 195 and i think his tough man fight record was 63 and two you know and the guy weighed
00:07:52you know 60 pounds more than me and they were betting everybody was betting kind of like the
00:07:57fights down here you know saying that i was gonna look like swiss cheese and guy's gonna punch holes
00:08:01in me well you know the guy never hit me when i left alaska i was 24 and 0. um i think i had about
00:08:1014 15 knockouts out of them the local guys who were putting these fights on decided they were going to set
00:08:16him up with the toughest guys around they could find and of course he didn't know anything about him just
00:08:20being from there or not being from there so i started you know telling him what i knew about
00:08:25these guys and uh he proceeded to bump them off one at a time and they got bigger and bigger and
00:08:31i think the heaviest one he fought was a guy named brett hughes 205 pounds with wolf's help
00:08:37greg moved out of the bars and into the professional arena where he continued to fight and continued to win
00:08:44each victory moved him up the lightweight ladder
00:08:55finally he earned a shot at the north american lightweight crown
00:09:00after beating edwin curette the little man from the northwest proved he was a world-class boxer as well
00:09:06as one tough guy how do you stop him he's never been on the floor you can't hurt him enough to put him on
00:09:20the floor he has got to be one of the toughest little men i've ever met in my life and he's probably
00:09:26tougher than most big men i mean his attitude is just he's extremely strong this is the first time that i've
00:09:33been the underdog in a long time uh i fight better when i'm the underdog i fight harder you know i've
00:09:41pretty much grown up my all my whole life being the underdog so you know i'm looking forward to this fight
00:09:47i'm real excited about it i'm not nervous um i'm not scared um i think i'm gonna win in fact i know i'm gonna win
00:09:55an appealing young man with a great story greg haugen from auburn washington fought in the cup
00:10:05man contest in alaska now lives here in las vegas and here he is battling for the world championship
00:10:11he has developed the following here in las vegas and as a four to one underdog you can be sure that
00:10:17much of this crowd probably the majority will be cheering for greg haugen as he heads toward the ring and
00:10:22and haugen is unbeaten in 19 professional fights with nine knockouts and 18 victories in one draw
00:10:29ranked number 12 by the international boxing federation 26 years of age been boxing since
00:10:36about the age of 10 when he was a 45 pounder as you heard in the feature telling you about him and uh
00:10:43here he has battled his way to the top greg haugen who has had many fights here in las vegas in the past
00:10:50couple of years various sites around las vegas has brought a lot of those fans in here tonight and
00:10:58they are now coming to their feet to acknowledge the challenger greg haugen
00:11:01he has appeared calm and relaxed throughout the week indeed we saw him leaving the hotel earlier this
00:11:17afternoon going off i gather for a light uh lunch of some kind with some of his
00:11:22his partners in the corner and greg haugen seems to be confident and ready to go against the
00:11:31somewhat more experienced jimmy paul and that paul's opponents have included the likes of harry arroyo
00:11:37cubanito perez and gannigan all victories for jimmy paul and daryl tyson is last doubting and jimmy paul with
00:11:44a 26 and 1 record has had more professional bouts but doesn't seem to phase young greg haugen at all
00:12:00for jimmy paul he may not have quite the same kind of crowd support in here that haugen is expected to
00:12:05but he has that tremendous stable of champions from the crump gym in detroit thomas hearns and milton
00:12:11mccroyer here the tradition that was established by hillmer kennedy the lightweight champ and now jimmy
00:12:17paul also a lightweight champion of the ibf wayne thomas will be battling later on yet another crump
00:12:24boxer and they're all here to support jimmy paul's title defense and that's a tremendous
00:12:32asset for him to have because these guys have been there before he's a champion and the pride of that
00:12:38crump stable stands very high indeed so jimmy paul well as we indicated might not be the fan favorite
00:12:45here tonight he knows that he's got plenty of support from the crump i don't know
00:12:53jimmy paul making his way to the ring here at the sports pavilion in caesar's palace site of
00:12:59so many great championship fights in the past and as we said we expect plenty of action in this doubleheader we have for you tonight
00:13:06on showtime
00:13:12international boxing federation rules for about 15 rounds will decide the championship barring a knockout
00:13:19scoring on the 10 point must system nine points or fewer to the loser of a round a standing eight count if
00:13:25he's so demanded by the referee meaning a fighter in trouble does not have to be knocked down to have
00:13:30to take the eight count and three knockdown rule is not an effect meaning that again at the discretion of the referee
00:13:37the fighter could be knocked down more than three times in a round without the fight being stopped
00:13:41our tail of the tape saw both of these boxers come in right at the limit 135 pounds the height and reach advantage go to the champion jimmy paul
00:13:49and now let's go up to our ring announcer chuck hull
00:14:00good evening ladies and gentlemen welcome to caesar's palace sports pavilion
00:14:04where tonight top rank incorporated in association with caesar's palace presents world championship boxing
00:14:12these bouts are sanctioned by the nevada state athletic commission dwayne ford chairman commissioners
00:14:17leaders at ringside are mr sig rogich freddy little and sammy macias the matchmaker is mel grebb
00:14:24representing the ibf at ringside mr al goodman the officials assigned by the nevada state athletic
00:14:30commission for this next bout of the evening the judges are art lurie of nevada robert cox of arizona
00:14:38and ed levine of florida the timekeeper is al bisik the count to get the knockdowns jane broadfoot
00:14:44the attending positions at ringside doctors donald romeo flip homanski and elias ganham your referee
00:14:51is davy pearl this is the co-main event of the evening 15 rounds of boxing for the ibf lightweight
00:15:02championship of the world introducing in the red corner formerly of auburn washington now fighting out
00:15:11out of las vegas nevada weighing 135 pounds with a professional record of 18 wins no defeats one draw
00:15:21and nine ko's ladies and gentlemen here is the challenger and nabf lightweight champion greg howdy
00:15:30and in the blue corner from detroit michigan he two weighs 135 pounds his professional record
00:15:47consists of 26 wins won the beat with 19 ko's he is the ibf lightweight champion of the world
00:15:56champion greg howdy jimmy hall let's go let's go okay i remember you got your instructions in the ring
00:16:13you know exactly what to do any questions now any questions all right shake hands and good luck to you
00:16:19both so we are set for round one number one of this ibf lightweight championship the champion in gold is
00:16:34jimmy paul 26 and one and greg howdy the challenger and the present north american lightweight champion
00:16:4018 0 and one with nine ko's in the blue the referee davy pearl
00:16:54jimmy paul's pattern established in the opening seconds as it usually is
00:17:12go slowly to the center of the ring and start using that good solid jab with the long reach
00:17:17one thing in watching alvin in recent bouts gill that would be appeared would appear to be a bit
00:17:29of a problem for him against a sharpshooter like paul is that he doesn't bob and weave very much he's
00:17:34virtually a stand-up target in there tim he's always looking to throw punches
00:17:40as he did there pretty good right hand of the body there's good concentration though tim and so far jimmy
00:17:46paul has been jabbing short as he just did then missed three jabs
00:17:52paul is going to have to establish that jab keep this kid off him haugen is a very very strong kid
00:18:01can you imagine him at about this same weight taking on those 195 200 pounders in the tough
00:18:08guy contest not something we condone by the way those can be dangerous fortunately young greg haugen
00:18:15survived all of that action in alaska and it's very interesting to me that paul has not been able
00:18:21to hit haugen with his jam
00:18:34well we say that you mean paul loves you to sleep and puts you to sleep
00:18:44good counter left took by haugen in the last exchange as we go on to a minute round one scheduled for 15
00:18:49and he certainly has shown some proper respect for the challenger because it's not that haugen isn't
00:18:57there to land the jab on it's just that paul has been unwilling to make that step in there that's
00:19:03that's right tim that half step that counts
00:19:13the other hand do not be lulled by a slow start from jimmy paul it is typical
00:19:21an overhand right and a warning to davy perot
00:19:26final seconds of round one
00:19:3915 round a lightweight championship box
00:19:50so greg haugen stocking and the champion as we see him here
00:19:54his usual somewhat deliberate start but gill i think he pointed out the significant thing about
00:19:59the round is that he was unable to reach haugen with the jab and we hear emmanuel stuart
00:20:09it's a matter of time close up the gap a little bit you're giving him too much room back there
00:20:13it's moving in a little tight on at least every time he's punching you catch it you're counting
00:20:17with something you're not letting him get away with shots sooner or later you're going to catch him
00:20:22now as we hear emmanuel stuart agreeing with gill clancy's assessment we're looking at the parents of
00:20:27jimmy paul virginian john paul no doubt proud of their son he's a fine young man
00:20:32likes to read is interested and knowledgeable about the bible and is a bit of a real estate
00:20:39tycoon now that he's a champion back in his neighborhoods in detroit round number two
00:20:48well manny stuart told jimmy paul to close the gap a little bit and as you mentioned he has a lot
00:20:53of respect for greg however now let's see if he's willing to take that extra half step in there
00:20:58make the jab land see timmy's right now he's jabbing and pulling back at the same time
00:21:06you can't do that it's two separate moves a lot of fighters do that he's he's dragging back as he jabs
00:21:23down to schedule for 15. paul waiting to counter there but it was dried with his left hook it's
00:21:32landed on behind the ear
00:21:35you know we talked about jimmy paul's defense and so far greg haugen has shown a pretty good defense
00:21:56back up davy pearl the referee you heard his firm instructions to the boxers the judges are ed
00:22:08levine from miami florida robert cox from phoenix arizona and art murray from las vegas
00:22:12going on the 10-point system
00:22:26under a minute to go round two
00:22:47pattern somewhat the same as the first round although ball able to land a couple of solid blows
00:22:57here in the second
00:23:02another good left hook by jimmy paul timed it perfectly as haugen led with a left hook and paid for it
00:23:08for it's a question of lighting the fire on it right inside for the champion
00:23:31coming to the end of round number two
00:23:41a busier haugen but a sharper shooting call in the second round
00:23:52greg haugen his handlers west wolf and stan tischler
00:23:56he's not nearly as well known as emmanuel steward and company from the crunk but uh they've done a
00:24:01fine job in bringing this boxer along to the north american championship and now to a world
00:24:06a little more pressure from here on in because he wants to lay lazy which he can try and pick off with jabs
00:24:23he's got nothing to beat you with
00:24:25and with that right hand for the body come back with the left hook to the hand
00:24:29and after you land the punch right back again with punches you know just hit him with a punch and back
00:24:34okay keep pressure
00:24:37stan tischler's instructions for greg haugen your comments gill
00:24:42tim they were they were good instructions if haugen can carry those instructions out there
00:24:47he should do a good job this round of course again it's it's all right to tell a kid to do it
00:24:51but the kid has to be able to do it slight laceration to the lip upper lip of greg haugen evidently
00:24:58from action in round two nothing serious but we'll be keeping an eye on it
00:25:03the one thing that stan tischler told how many says when you hit him with a punch you
00:25:06just come back and hit him with two or three more now the reason for that is when you do hit him
00:25:10with the one as he did then that's when you have jimmy paul off balance he has very very good balance
00:25:15and if you can catch him off balance that's when you can nail him
00:25:17well that shot just as you were describing it uh gill was uh the best of the fight for haugen
00:25:24there's a real good solid left of the body
00:25:37paul is still trying to punch and get out of the way at the same time that's an impossibility
00:25:42of the way at the same time that's an opportunity to get out of the way at the same time
00:25:53round three scheduled for fifteen international boxing federation world title at stake
00:25:59jimmy paul the champion alvin and blue the challenger
00:26:09short with all his punches tim he just is not reaching halvin with his punches
00:26:17paul has been somewhat lead-footed in the early going here not a lot of bounce and while he is
00:26:23basically a flat-footed fighter usually has a little better movement to try and close that gap
00:26:30maybe it's halvin doing the lowing because he is one speed and he keeps coming forward
00:26:40and halvin really gives you the illusion of coming forward he's not just walking in
00:26:45that's why jimmy paul's punches are short you see the kid just take that little half step back
00:26:49paul just hit him with a good right hand yes he did and a kid left
00:26:57talking to him now haugen well he thinks he's in the tough man conference
00:27:02yeah that was probably a big part of the strategy in those
00:27:06that and the babies we around in the corner
00:27:07under a minute to go in round number three
00:27:16crossing the thirty-second mark
00:27:22is not just walking right in he's not one of those barbers and we just walks in
00:27:26hold it up hold it up get up get up jumps in quick and tries to get out quick causing a lot of problems
00:27:33final seconds of round number three
00:27:40four was just starting to loosen up yeah
00:27:45yeah we saw a little more body movement a little more footwork there right to the end of round three
00:27:51another close round neither fighter dominant but i wouldn't go to haugen on that one i would do it
00:27:56with him just for the work after this man you had the man hurt with the right hand and you're sitting
00:28:01waiting on a perfect position for him to come in and give you an opening you were supposed to
00:28:04one after him break the left hook right off a man that's hurt he cannot block a hook and right hand
00:28:09if you drill it off good you got to be more aggressive he's not sitting out here trying to
00:28:12win a game you got to make opportunities you hurt the man let this man out to hook you that fight
00:28:16should have been over with this round come on there's no standing council you get the man in trouble the
00:28:20fight's overwhelming it's what's costing your money on top of your jab put poos and trees together with
00:28:26this guy if he punches two you punch three that's how you win this fight now his lip is bleeding i want
00:28:32you to chop him up chop him up
00:28:41round four upcoming a somewhat frustrated emmanuel steward trying to get paul trying to light the fire as you put it
00:28:48uh gill and and the haugen corner calm cool collected feeling that uh their young guy is so
00:28:54far on course here well tim stands official said a very interesting thing and very basic he said if
00:29:00he hit you with two punches you went in with three that way you're going to win that's pretty good logic
00:29:06we did note that jimmy paul had seemed to loosen up in the final seconds of round three
00:29:13just started to get a little body movement
00:29:19emmanuel steward asking him to be more aggressive
00:29:24there's that greg haugen thinking a little skip back again tim he's not the easiest target in the world
00:29:36talking about the footwork of jimmy paul being somewhat lackluster in the early drawing
00:29:42in looking at the legs of these two fighters
00:29:45haugen has the legs of the middleweight
00:29:52solidly put together young lightweight at 155.
00:29:55give him up give him up give him up
00:29:58baby perel won the jimmy paul i thought it was a borderline fight
00:30:03good right to the body from haugen he moved paul with that fight he's a strong hit
00:30:09hit him
00:30:15halfway through round four
00:30:17there's that beautiful combination but picked up by haugen
00:30:22time paul has really tried to throw that one two
00:30:25and it should be borne in mind as this fight develops that paul has gone the distance in his
00:30:34last two title offenses a somewhat disputed decision over cubanito perez and a tough fight against
00:30:39daryl tyson avenging an earlier feat the defeat that most everybody conceded was a somewhat questionable decision
00:30:48perez fight paul got very very tired in the last three rounds but in the tyson fight he came on in
00:30:53the end of the fight so we don't know which paul is here tonight if in fact it goes the distance
00:30:57it's landing some pretty good shots now it's hard to get the range
00:31:11good combination by haugen both punches scores and he just jumps in with his punches
00:31:19a little more blood from that slight cut on his upper lip
00:31:24again not a serious factor
00:31:27good jab somehow
00:31:34coming to the end of round number four greg haugen in blue have you not heard of him well that's
00:31:39all right he is the north american champion auburn washington not living in las vegas
00:31:47has already shown jimmy paul a better known champion that uh this will not be any easy evening
00:31:53you can't get up on your face
00:31:57you can't get up on your head three you can't get up on your head
00:32:02showtime and following this got Jimmy Paul's stable mate at
00:32:06Kronk Dwayne Thomas gets his title opportunity for the vacant
00:32:10crowd he's rated number two and he'll take on John the Beast
00:32:13Mugabe 12 rounds for the WBC super weatherweight
00:32:18championship at 154 pounds all you're doing is setting up
00:32:23waiting and letting him see what he's going to do you're the
00:32:25champion you get out and start jumping and go to the man
00:32:28I mean it's simple because you're not fighting
00:32:32you're not even fighting now
00:32:35again Emmanuel Stewart with some stern words for his charge
00:32:44Jimmy Paul not happy with his performance for the first four
00:32:48rounds but we've listened to Emmanuel make that same exhortation
00:32:52to Paul in other fights Paul winds up winning them
00:32:54he is 26 and 1
00:32:56you know Tim Jimmy Paul is not animating that in the corner he
00:33:05just sits downstairs into space I just don't even know if he's
00:33:08paying attention to Emmanuel Stewart
00:33:10he is a good straight right hand by Jimmy Paul
00:33:14over the jab and Greg Haugen smiled again and told him
00:33:18this doesn't it didn't it didn't hurt me
00:33:20that's Paul's best punch
00:33:24he can really wing it now he looked in the corner
00:33:27to Stewart
00:33:28Jimmy Paul just does not seem sure of himself
00:33:37a little bit off
00:33:41I sense though that it's a familiar scenario
00:33:46Gil we've seen this before
00:33:48you know he seems to get it together as the fight goes on
00:33:52Alvin obviously a discouraging kind of a guy
00:34:00two good body shots by the challenger
00:34:04Alvin appears to be kind of a heavy puncher rather than a shark puncher
00:34:11that's like the body he's the kind of a guy that can club you
00:34:17he doesn't have that real sharp snap in his punches
00:34:20a little blood from the lip of the champion Jimmy Paul
00:34:27under a minute to go round number five
00:34:29now a little blood from the lip of the champion Jimmy Paul
00:34:43under a minute to go round number five
00:34:47number five
00:34:50and this is really a tough fight to score
00:34:52there hasn't been a dominant round in the fight
00:34:54no that's correct
00:34:56step out step out
00:34:59on our card unofficially naturally we have the challenger ahead three rounds to one
00:35:04but Gil's point being that some scorer may tip the balance the other way
00:35:09step out
00:35:14under 30 seconds to go and round number five
00:35:18Tim Ryan and Gil Clancy we are at the sports pavilion indoors at Caesar Palace in Las Vegas
00:35:24championship action on showtime
00:35:29both fighters landed their jabs in that exchange
00:35:33the key is that Jimmy Paul's educated jam has lost his education right now
00:35:40coming to the end of round number five
00:35:44and some more blood from the lip of Jimmy Paul the lower lip
00:35:48and we want to remind you that following this title fight
00:35:54the beast will lead the action representing Kampala Uganda and Tampa Florida
00:36:00against Wayne Thomas for the vacant WBC 154 pound title vacated by Thomas Hearns
00:36:07Hearns will next challenge for the light heavyweight crown and wait his time for what he hopes will be
00:36:13another battle against marvelous Marvin Hagler
00:36:17there's Greg Haugen you can see just a little abrasion on the upper portion of his lip
00:36:24you don't want to change
00:36:26you've got to go to work this
00:36:27you have to shoot that hook to the back
00:36:30right hand
00:36:31you have hook to the right upper part
00:36:32you've got a three
00:36:34two and three
00:36:36get off
00:36:38well Gil in the interest of trying not to score even rounds as much of the time as possible
00:36:42I gave round five to Haugen again very close
00:36:46every round has been close
00:36:52my view of the fight four to one which I think you concur with is evidently supported by Emmanuel Stewart
00:36:58if you can judge by his comments to his champion
00:37:03well Tim when you know the kind of ability that a Jimmy Paul has
00:37:07and then you see him going out there not using it
00:37:10it's very very frustrating
00:37:14we're in round six scheduled for 15
00:37:17and Haugen has already landed some heavy punches this round
00:37:20yes he has and showing a little bounce too
00:37:22as though his confidence is building with each round
00:37:24as it should
00:37:31Gil as usual with your sharp eye and keen boxing mind
00:37:35you've picked up something that has really proven to be a big factor
00:37:38that little movement on the part of Haugen backwards escaping and forcing Paul to reach for him
00:37:44that's right Tim
00:37:45as Jimmy Paul that his jab should be going right through Haugen
00:37:48instead he just is not reaching with the jab
00:37:50and when he throws the right hand he has to reach for Haugen
00:37:52and it makes him look very very awkward as he just did then
00:37:54yep
00:37:55and Haugen comes in quickly
00:38:04a thudding punch gets back out again plays that little game
00:38:06I suppose that little escape route came in handy against those 200 pounders in bars in Anchorage
00:38:11I suppose that little escape route came in handy against those 200 pounders in bars in Anchorage
00:38:21I didn't I don't think he had to move as quickly
00:38:23you know Tim in the bars in Anchorage
00:38:27they never got into the sixth and seventh round
00:38:29let's see what happens later in the fight
00:38:35blood from the lip of Jimmy Paul starting to bother him a little more
00:38:40nice combination by the ball
00:38:41but again Haugen just shrugged it off
00:38:43came back with one of his own under a minute we go in round six
00:38:48and a short right by the challenger
00:38:50and a good counterpunch back from Paul
00:38:54that combination fell short
00:38:56and again
00:38:58there was a little bob and weed
00:39:00nicely done by Haugen
00:39:02there he has
00:39:04he has what we call awkwardly cute moves
00:39:07took a little step over to the right that time to a good right hand
00:39:10solid jab by the champion there
00:39:12under 30 seconds to go round six
00:39:18combination to the box in the ears literally by Paul
00:39:28he caught him coming in with an overhand right
00:39:31that stopped Paul in his tracks
00:39:36tried it again Tim
00:39:38yeah grazed him that time
00:39:39now
00:39:41Haugen is looking at
00:39:42to see if his left eye is cut
00:39:44right eye
00:39:45it is the blood of Jimmy Paul I believe
00:39:47oh Tim I think he may have a cut right eye
00:39:49now let's see if he's
00:39:50yeah
00:39:52let's see Tim
00:39:54I think it's blood from the mouth of Jimmy Paul
00:39:56let's see if they clean him up here and we'll find out as we're in the
00:39:58no Tim it looks to me like this
00:40:00as soon as Paul's born
00:40:02go right back to him with something by the way
00:40:03even if there's no more in the jail
00:40:05yeah they're working on
00:40:06they're working on Greg Haugen's right eye
00:40:09Stan Tischler's the cut man
00:40:10Stan Tischler's the cut man
00:40:14there we are
00:40:15there you can see
00:40:18yeah
00:40:19the kid knew he was cut
00:40:20Tim as soon as it happened
00:40:21just shook his head
00:40:23looks like it's high on the eyebrow
00:40:25right on my hand
00:40:27and I suspect it might have been a clash of heads
00:40:30rather than a blow
00:40:31pushing back
00:40:32because I thought originally the blood may have been in the mouth of Jimmy Paul
00:40:36which is bleeding
00:40:37and their heads did come together
00:40:39so I think it was an accidental clash of heads
00:40:42it does not appear to be too serious
00:40:44Paul meanwhile had been bothered by the cut lip
00:40:48in round number five
00:40:49in round six pardon me
00:40:51those little things can affect your concentration
00:40:54even though it may not be a real factor in terms of your performance
00:40:57obviously not blocking his vision at all
00:41:00good counterpunch by Jimmy Paul
00:41:02good stiff left foot
00:41:06round seven scheduled for 15
00:41:15Tim Ryan, Gil Clancy, ringside
00:41:18sports pavilion at Caesars Palace
00:41:20all right come on out
00:41:21come on out
00:41:27good combination by Greg Halvin
00:41:29he did not work at it
00:41:30he may have hurt Jimmy Paul, Tim
00:41:32yes he did
00:41:34Paul looking a little confused here
00:41:35looking at the referee
00:41:36Davey Pearl
00:41:38trying to get his feet underneath him
00:41:45no question that Paul is in some trouble here
00:41:48and the crowd sensing it
00:41:52and Halvin is sticking to his battle plans
00:41:54and he just isn't walking in
00:41:56look he's up to the mark away from the mark
00:41:58that's what we used to call it in the gym
00:42:00quick moves in quick moves out
00:42:01really bothering Jimmy Paul
00:42:03Paul definitely trying to stay outside now
00:42:12get his feet under him
00:42:13a little bounce
00:42:14make a recovery here
00:42:15he was wobbling
00:42:16get out
00:42:17get out
00:42:18get out
00:42:21get out
00:42:22get out
00:42:23get out
00:42:24keep
00:42:25get out
00:42:26get out
00:42:27normally a very stiff thing indeed that he uses as punching weapon to no factor tonight
00:42:45under a minute to go in round number seven
00:42:52good body shot by big howdy
00:42:54now two good jams
00:43:00he's got the champion backing up and fighting very defensively since that combination that wobbled him
00:43:09good uppercut from now two good left hooks then after the right hand to the body
00:43:17it's amazing how he can just take that little step back and paul can't reach him
00:43:20and you have to remember paul has a reach advantage
00:43:27the body by the channel
00:43:30paul with that lift bothering him cut inside the lower lip but you can see his tongue working
00:43:35at it
00:43:46appreciating the effort by greg halvin
00:43:49round number seven on our card we've got the challenger up five to two
00:43:52and here we'll see that combination from haugen that definitely got the champion's attention
00:44:05and timon was just a little short left hook off the right hand to the body
00:44:09that's the way to pressure that's the way that right hand would have ripped his head off
00:44:24stand tishler did a good job on the right eye of greg halvin
00:44:39you talk about cutting and he looks like he's a good cut man
00:44:42i pointed out that wolf and fish are not exactly recognizable names in the boxing business they
00:44:49don't have the ring of clancy and dundee they don't uh have the glad you said clancy and dundee
00:44:55instead of dundee and clancy
00:44:57or they eddie putches and emmanuel stewards but uh yes indeed they are doing a fine job in that corner
00:45:04very professional we mentioned uh at the end of round seven on our official card we've got the
00:45:14challenger ahead five rounds to two the rounds were so closed yes indeed don't be surprised if
00:45:19somebody has them exactly the opposite way alvin at the end of the last round he was starting to
00:45:25out strength he's out punching him here in round eight
00:45:29jimmy paul and his fifth world championship bout he won it from harry arroyo in april of 85 and is
00:45:40defended against robin blake juvenito perez and daryl tyson
00:45:46greg halvin his first title try he is the north american champion
00:45:53now going for a world title
00:45:55jimmy paul just seems very very lethargic he just isn't with it i mean the kid is out speeding
00:46:09him stepping in banging with punches and getting back out without having to pay at all
00:46:13jimmy paul looks like he's sleepwalking him come on out come on out hold it
00:46:23in a case like that when jimmy paul blocks a punch he should counter but he's not countering
00:46:28he's been effective with that as a lead punch he kind of brings it up almost halfway between it
00:46:49the hook and an uppercut and he's caught paul by surprise several times
00:46:56there's a good left by the champion
00:46:59but here's that big right hand of paul
00:47:10a little swelling under the right eye of paul
00:47:12and he's the boss in there right now has been uh the last two rounds
00:47:32yeah right on a button nothing happened maybe a little cut now at the corner of the right eye of
00:47:37paul big right hand by the champion that backs up halgan paul pressing the advantage
00:47:44the bell sounds ending round number eight
00:47:48a good finish by the champion but the rest of the round really went to halgan
00:47:52so on our card we're going to go with a challenger but frequently you will see judges go with the
00:47:59the man who finishes well tim that was always an old trick in boxing
00:48:03the fight would have been all the way
00:48:04if you had a pin now let's take a look at that jimmy poor right hand
00:48:08and there it is right on the button tim and that's what the people in vegas talk about they
00:48:12say they love this kid left side on the button and nothing happened the left hook behind it
00:48:16get my trunks out you're bothering or leaving pull his trunks out take a nice deep breath
00:48:21tim as i was saying that's an old trick in boxing somebody yells out 15 seconds and the guy rallies and
00:48:25a lot of judges forget about the first two minutes and 45 seconds there's dwayne thomas and uh must be
00:48:32somewhat concerned about jimmy paul at this point but he looks very relaxed as he prepares for his
00:48:37battle for a world title against john mugabe tim i doubt if they're allowing him to watch the jimmy
00:48:42paul fight i don't think he has a television oh he is what i would say absolutely well here's something
00:48:48i didn't know and if i was unless he was watching all my children or something well tim if i want to
00:48:52tell you if i was his manager and trainer he would not be watching the fight the guy who he has to worry
00:48:57about tonight is dwayne thomas it's his future and his life we're into round number nine
00:49:11and he looked very happy yeah nice and relaxed
00:49:17now let's see whether the champion jimmy paul can continue from the final seconds
00:49:22he just can't reach this kid and he's unwilling to really take a chance
00:49:41a big chance unlike haugen who just took a big chance then winging that right hand
00:49:58and haugen who has not had the benefit of the
00:50:01gym experience that jimmy paul gets in the crock and the fine tutelage of somebody like
00:50:05emmanuel stewart trainer champions nonetheless some of the things we're looking at here gill good
00:50:09balance that in and out you've already described he's got terrific legs as i pointed out just
00:50:13physically that hold him up very well he doesn't look like a ballet dancer but he gets the job done
00:50:18yeah
00:50:27a lot of those short short punches that jimmy paul usually scores with
00:50:31jimmy's mouth is wide open now in the ninth schedule for 15 tim and gill clancy watching this ivy a
00:50:37lightweight championship bout as we see it there's a champion in goal jimmy paul in some trouble
00:50:48short right from the challenger
00:50:56jimmy is a good infighter to get cracking inside to grit his teeth and fight inside he knows beautiful
00:51:01short combinations but up to this point he's unwilling to do it
00:51:06and he can't hit the kid from outside well he had better do something
00:51:13a much more mature performance here by the challenger than against edwin curette when he won the nabf title
00:51:19and against land darrelson is another recent outing uh it just seems to really improve dramatically
00:51:25he stepped up to this step up in class he's doing he's doing the same thing time after time and he's
00:51:33getting away with it to the end of round nine
00:51:36well we're heading into the tenth round again uh we have pointed out there's been some close ones
00:51:55in the right hand but right now try to tell him as soon as he starts coming seven two
00:52:02however four of the rounds right now in our opinion almost could have gone either way you know it's
00:52:09tough to hedge the judge has a tough job he has to make a decision you know but it's very very close
00:52:15as far as those amounts you gotta get your punches off you understand you must get off of the punches
00:52:24use your jab yeah but work forward he don't like when you work forward he likes you to back off
00:52:31then he can get off with that left hand and go with that over here right
00:52:38come on this is for everything this fight bucket let everything hang out he's nothing
00:52:45that's the first semi-excited comment offered by the haugen corner they've been very calm and poised
00:52:52in there very impressive just a little reminder that hey you're doing fine but this is a world title
00:52:57fight keep it up our words to that effect from the vernacular of our english language
00:53:06get in the motor corner we've got a tape problem on the glove of jimmy paul
00:53:11what the hell's that dread here they well alertly pointed it out to him took the dread off and away we go
00:53:27paul for the first time was able to get alvin on the ropes landed a short left alvin now gets right
00:53:33back to the center of the ring
00:53:39good luck hand by the champion there
00:53:49as jimmy paul drags him i keep repeating myself but he drags his left foot back which means he's
00:53:56trying to punch and get out of the way at the same time you just can't do that
00:54:06he has to have the confidence in his own to step in with that jim and stiffen it up
00:54:18so
00:54:21come on come on
00:54:2626 year old greg haugen
00:54:29marlborough washington now resident here in las vegas jimmy paul
00:54:33born in great fall right here like good right hand by greg haugan
00:54:36him double jab but one of the few times paul was off balance and haugan took advantage of it
00:54:42and another right hand then the left hook to the body very basic stuff from haugan right hand to the
00:54:47body left hook to the chin left hand to the body right hand to the chin but the thing is he keeps
00:54:52doing it he's doing something he had that little upshoot left that we talked about earlier and he just scored with it again
00:54:58there's some more blood from that cut inside the lower lip of paul
00:55:06there was a floyd patterson left here and flies through the air with the greatest of ease
00:55:12all he got was there on the other end
00:55:16there it is again
00:55:19not effective at all
00:55:21under 30 seconds we go in round 10.
00:55:28it just goes enough to stop just so that paul can't reach him with that legend he's out he's out
00:55:38thinking uh jimmy paul paul thinks he's coming he's not coming but what a contrast in the preparation
00:55:43these guys have had as pros here's jimmy paul a four-time michigan golden glove champion three-time
00:55:48michigan aau champion and here's greg haugen who learns how to fight in saloons in anchorage alaska
00:55:55he's 26 years of age and into the 11th round very much in contention here and there you see his
00:56:04mother sandy haugen on the left of your screen his girlfriend karen dartis looks a little concerned
00:56:11we might say but i gotta believe that both those women can see the fight as we are seeing it and feel
00:56:16that their man is all right and believe me in a close fight like this if you're working in the corner
00:56:22or again if you're the girlfriend of the mother all these close rounds until the referee says your
00:56:26guy won your heart is just up in your throat i know many a fight i waited for a decision even though
00:56:34i thought my guy won i was almost sometimes sure he won but you're still nervous until they say the
00:56:39winner oh there's a smile
00:56:41that's the line of the night there from tischler
00:56:57said he's moving like muhammad ali ripped his head off well ali did not get his head ripped off too many
00:57:03times
00:57:08low shot there from halvin out of the view of davy pearl
00:57:14and around number 11 again for 15. you pointed out punch from from greg haugen he's throwing the
00:57:20punches if not too much is happening at least he's throwing and scoring and jimmy is waiting and waiting
00:57:26how's that song go waiting at the church he'll be waiting at the end of the fight unless he wakes up
00:57:38no no knockdown off balance well again though tim even though he was off balance there was nothing
00:57:43but this may wake up jimmy paul maybe
00:57:47rushing in with a left foot lead
00:57:49boxing is just so much psychological stuff in boxing just a little accident like that can change
00:57:57and give paul a little more confidence wake him up
00:58:06jimmy paul's desire to be considered with camacho and rosario feeling that he's been overlooked as the
00:58:12ivf champion kind of the third champ now one would think even from that psychological
00:58:19point of view that he would have been out here tonight to impress to to start like a house of
00:58:24fire and get rid of this guy who's essentially an unknown this is not a well-known contender and
00:58:29yet uh it's been haugen's night as we see it we keep cautioning that the judges may rule these close
00:58:35rounds the other way he's not the fastest guy in the world but he's out speeding jimmy paul in and out
00:58:49three minutes to go around 11. paul has no snap in those punches whatsoever three punch combination
00:58:55they're all blocked with nothing to the punches rather than coming on as he has done in the past
00:59:01he seems to be more confused here in these later rounds not quite sure what to do with this guy
00:59:06a little deep sigh there a deep breath from paul maybe feeling the pace
00:59:21again a tape problem on the left glove of jimmy paul
00:59:24just the fact that haugen is willing to reach in and bank to the body somebody has to make the fight
00:59:40and haugen is making the fight nice combination
00:59:44again paul couldn't reach him as soon as paul set himself the kid jumped right and scored two punches
00:59:54a hard press to give more than two rounds so far to the champion round two and round six again with
01:00:06our usual disclaimers let's listen in the corner of jimmy paul
01:00:10the first round one we got problems we got problems on the score sheet serious problems you're going
01:00:15to have to get out and go to work you're going to have to go for a locker you're damn right you're
01:00:20losing your championship i'm telling you you're waiting too much to go to work it's simply because
01:00:25you don't have the desire and you can't call on to no champs without a desire it's got the
01:00:28champions in your heart and all you're doing is just like like you're going through the motion
01:00:32entertain this man runs to you first he's getting the points because he runs in the lane the first shot
01:00:37then you're into a quiz but he's got it off that's why we tell you get him off go turn with something
01:00:41touch it in him let's say no more left hook back in the body put him together son he's ready he's
01:00:48been ready to cut the round but you gotta leave
01:00:52well i tell you you know there is serious concern when more than one guy talks in a cronk corner
01:00:59emmanuel stewart took himself out of it the other two ralph citro i think it's walter smith in there
01:01:04tonight that uh chipped in there trying to encourage jimmy paul it is quite clear that
01:01:09emmanuel stewart and the rest of the cross corner are very concerned well you heard what emmanuel said
01:01:15he said which is exactly what we're saying he said you have problems you're losing your championship
01:01:20you just don't have the desire he's been fighting like he's in a trance going through the motions
01:01:26all right step out step out just seemed you know fighters will say that after a fight i just couldn't
01:01:31get off tonight couldn't get off all right come on out again many a time in addressing when a fighter
01:01:36would say to me you got to get him for me again i'd say right back to him you just had him
01:01:42you only you don't get the opportunity that many times when you got it you have to take a chance
01:01:46you know that's what greg halvin is definitely thinking he's in round 12. scheduled for 15. i don't
01:01:54like to criticize a kid that's winning a fight but i think he could show a little more fire he can
01:01:58start really manhandling jimmy paul now push him let him know he really wants it
01:02:05so again these judges don't just slide
01:02:07and these judges are ed levine from miami robert cox from phoenix rory from las vegas
01:02:21the kid is able to tie paul up inside him he's physically a little stronger than jimmy paul
01:02:27there he is again now he's muscling up a little bit he won't allow paul to get off of those combinations
01:02:35there's a good left by paul
01:02:37also a good left by halvin coming in exchange
01:02:48for a lightweight fight tim very very slow footwork on both fighters parts especially jim
01:02:58round 12 scheduled for 15. now of course halvin has never been this
01:03:02he's beyond this distance he's been 12. winning the nmef title from burette
01:03:09good left hook right hand by preg halvin
01:03:14paul is showing more effort this mountain not that he's more effective but he's showing more effort
01:03:18that he's more effective this bad
01:03:25crowd getting into it here most of them are halvin fans he lives in las vegas now
01:03:29The same moves by Haugen, time after time, right hand lean to the body, and they're in
01:03:46effect, they land.
01:03:47By now, the ball should have something figured out.
01:03:50Good jabs from the champion, and a good right hand from Haugen, and a dandy by Haugen back.
01:03:59Left hand there by Paul back in round number 12.
01:04:13Tim, it goes to show you the state of Jimmy Paul, and we have to point out that he finally
01:04:18landed the left jab.
01:04:20Take a deep breath.
01:04:21Let's get that whole thing back.
01:04:23Three more rounds.
01:04:24Come on, let me hear it.
01:04:26Don't let this title go to this guy because he's bullshitting it.
01:04:29Reach down to the bottom.
01:04:30You're a champion.
01:04:31Reach down.
01:04:32And reach down and go with everything you've got for everybody.
01:04:37You're a champion.
01:04:38Go all the way.
01:04:39Walk right over to him and let it go.
01:04:41Don't punch him five feet out.
01:04:43Knock that suit.
01:04:44Make that suit cooler off the bottom of his face.
01:04:46Stan Tischler sounds like Burgess Meredith and Rocky there.
01:04:49He's got all the lines.
01:04:50You're a champion.
01:04:51He's dead.
01:04:52He can't.
01:04:53He's dead.
01:04:54I thought it was Burgess Meredith.
01:04:55Not him.
01:04:56Round number 13.
01:04:57The concern is more properly in the Paul corner.
01:04:58The champion.
01:04:59Paul looks alive now, though, Tim, for some reason or other.
01:05:02Looks like he's awake.
01:05:03Aaron's here.
01:05:04He's watching defend his title.
01:05:05Hopefully, for the full time, successfully.
01:05:07Again, the same thing.
01:05:08Any time Hogan wants to get inside, he flies a right hand to the body.
01:05:10Follows it in.
01:05:11Gene Fulmer used to be very effective for that, Tim.
01:05:12He'd fight the good fighters, the Ray Robinsons.
01:05:13And just, it was fun.
01:05:14It was fun.
01:05:15It was fun.
01:05:16It was fun.
01:05:17It was fun.
01:05:18It was fun.
01:05:19It was fun.
01:05:20It was fun.
01:05:21It was fun.
01:05:22It was fun.
01:05:23It was fun.
01:05:24It was fun.
01:05:25It was fun.
01:05:26Gene Fulmer used to be very effective for that, Tim.
01:05:28He'd fight the good fighters, the Ray Robinsons.
01:05:30And just, it would be right hand, head, and left hook.
01:05:38But, you know, a lot of these combinations just seem to be in slow motion for Paul.
01:05:41Yes, it is.
01:05:42That one we just saw there, I mean, Hogan was right there, and Paul missed him with all
01:05:47three punches.
01:05:48Yep, there's the right hand, head, left hook.
01:05:51Oh, right hand by Paul.
01:05:54Yep, not had to snap on it, but a left back from Haugen.
01:05:59That's what Joe Clancy likes to see.
01:06:00You get hit, hit the other guy back.
01:06:03Make him pay, Tim.
01:06:06Nice left hook underneath by Jimmy Paul.
01:06:13Round 13, this 15-round IVF title fight.
01:06:20Paul is really trying to let it all hang out, Tim.
01:06:22He better do something this round, because I think he's using a lot of energy now.
01:06:31He just cannot seem to nail this kid with anything.
01:06:34And he usually is a sharpshooter.
01:06:36See, there we go.
01:06:37Right hand, any time you have to once again close.
01:06:39Step out, step out, step out, step out.
01:06:56A minute to go, round 13.
01:06:57And he ball, but he's over Arroyo, Perez, Andy Gannigan, Robin Blayton.
01:07:06And a difficult, difficult evening.
01:07:08Right now.
01:07:09Pull it up.
01:07:10Pull it up.
01:07:11Pull it up.
01:07:12Pull it up.
01:07:13Pull it up.
01:07:14Pull it up.
01:07:15Young man unbeaten.
01:07:16Not against the caliber of competition Paul is facing.
01:07:20Best wins over Chris Calvin and Charlie Brown.
01:07:25Back up the champion of the bottom left jab.
01:07:32Walters does not seem to have the snap or the strength tonight, Tim.
01:07:35He used a lot of energy in the beginning of the round.
01:07:37Look at that right hand.
01:07:39Slow motion.
01:07:40That was not a Jimmy Paul right hand.
01:07:55That's the end of round number 13.
01:08:00Early action in the round was the better part of it by Paul.
01:08:06And probably the winner of the round on the basis of that.
01:08:09But again, we point out that sometimes judges remember the last few seconds.
01:08:13And without a real dominant figure, the scoring is going to be very interesting in this bout.
01:08:18On our cards, Haugen is handily ahead, but it may mean nothing at all.
01:08:25Manny Stewart seems to feel the way we feel.
01:08:29Although sometimes a manager, even if his fight is ahead, he'll tell him he's losing because he wasn't working with him.
01:08:33Yeah, I've heard Manny Stewart enough, I think, to recognize the difference.
01:08:38He is concerned.
01:08:39He's very concerned.
01:08:40And he should be.
01:08:42Come on, Jimmy.
01:08:43Come on, Jimmy.
01:08:44Come on, Jimmy.
01:08:45Come on, Jimmy.
01:08:46Ralph Citro in the foreground.
01:08:47Ostensibly the cut man, but getting into the cheering section here.
01:08:50They'll notice he's in trouble.
01:08:51The champion, Jimmy Paul.
01:08:52Challenger, Greg Halvin.
01:08:53Little swelling around his eyes, but otherwise, looking just fine, thank you.
01:08:58Round 14.
01:08:59Come on out.
01:09:00Come on out.
01:09:01Come on out.
01:09:02Come on out.
01:09:03Come on out.
01:09:04And we said before the show that these underdogs in both of these fights are live underdogs.
01:09:13It's a live underdogs.
01:09:14Haugen's scoring inside.
01:09:15Landed a low blow and gets worked from the referee.
01:09:16It's been a very clean fight, too.
01:09:17It has, indeed.
01:09:18Yeah, I think that we've seen a few low blows and none of them appear to be intentional.
01:09:19Davey Pearlsman's right on top of the action, Jim, for the entire fight.
01:09:20This looks like round one for Paul.
01:09:21Just cannot time this kid at all.
01:09:37this looks like round one for far just cannot time this kid at all
01:09:47snap on the punch yeah but how did the gloves up there i know i didn't say he landed it
01:09:58i said it was the best one he threw
01:10:00he had bad intentions
01:10:04there's another one with bad intentions
01:10:07there's another one with bad intentions
01:10:11that right here to the body is in the bread and butter
01:10:14points
01:10:21from the beginning of the fight
01:10:27there it is again
01:10:41i've been starting to show a little wear and tear
01:10:56never been beyond twelve remember
01:10:59a little wear and tear
01:11:01and paul has fought fifteen the last two fights he's been in
01:11:05augen twelve once when he won the title
01:11:08the north american title
01:11:09from edwin curett
01:11:13and his last outing

01:12:35get him on the chin baby with a hook
01:12:37at the right hand you got a fight
01:12:38fire and you get in it this is the
01:12:40title this last round we don't
01:12:42lose you understand don't give it
01:12:44this is it
01:12:45two tough young guys have been
01:12:54battling for 14 rounds of world
01:12:57championship at stake Jimmy Paul
01:13:00and gold Ray Alvin and blue again
01:13:03again and doubled through much of
01:13:04the fight has rallied in the last
01:13:06two as we have seen it and Tim he
01:13:08pulled two left hooks with a lot of
01:13:10snap on him of course they didn't
01:13:12land but at least once you know you
01:13:13can do it and he's reaching
01:13:17underneath he knows he's bothering
01:13:19how good to the body he's landed
01:13:20another good left hook to the body
01:13:21now he's losing those elbows he's
01:13:25losing his smarts now
01:13:27Tim you can tell how tight he's
01:13:34tired Jimmy Paul is when Davey Pearl
01:13:37separated and pushed him back he
01:13:39almost knocked Jimmy Paul down
01:13:43and Greg Hauvinus is not exactly
01:13:46fresh as the day he did then this is a
01:13:47tough grueling round of a tough grueling
01:13:51fight
01:13:51one wonders why Paul did not fight in
01:13:57this manner earlier on he may be a
01:14:01little too late
01:14:02up to the judges but this is the kind
01:14:06of fight that Jimmy Paul is capable of
01:14:08he seemed to be saving it for the last two
01:14:10three rounds
01:14:11there's a snap on the punches
01:14:14woke up but busier and throwing them
01:14:19over and under
01:14:20again Hauvin being woke will be cute
01:14:30we've done underneath a couple of good
01:14:32punches
01:14:32and he's punching back himself
01:14:34Hauvin having difficulty now making good
01:14:42contact with Paul
01:14:43he's obviously weary
01:14:48he's tired
01:14:50will this late rally by Jimmy Paul even
01:14:55up
01:14:57step up step up step up
01:14:59step up
01:15:01step up
01:15:02step up
01:15:03step up
01:15:04step up
01:15:05step up
01:15:06step up
01:15:07step up
01:15:08step up
01:15:09now Paul is trying to fight
01:15:10before he'd allow Hauvin to tie him up
01:15:12rolling and hitting warning to Paul
01:15:15watch our next now
01:15:17Hauvin really has got no snap left
01:15:21he's just trying to stay close to Paul
01:15:23he's supposed to fall
01:15:25appear to be busy
01:15:2730 seconds to go
01:15:29but again on our cards
01:15:31he has dominated over the fight
01:15:33and how the judges see it
01:15:35it's a different
01:15:36these last three rounds
01:15:38it looks like Paul is going to win this round
01:15:42on my card that only brings him to five
01:15:45and we had four close rounds
01:15:47this is a tough one to score
01:15:50I think Hauvin did enough to win
01:15:52again it's up to the judges
01:15:54hit all over
01:15:5615 bruising rounds
01:15:59Jimmy Paul's title defense against Greg Hauvin
01:16:03and will a late rally as we shot at least the last three rounds by the champion
01:16:08enable him to retain the IVF lightweight title
01:16:12it's in the hands of the judges right now
01:16:15Ed Levine, Robert Cox and Art Lurie
01:16:17Ed Levine, Robert Cox and Art Lurie
01:16:22well this is the moment of tension
01:16:40put yourself in the shoes of Greg Hauvin, Jimmy Paul, Emanuel Stewart and Stan Churchill
01:16:45they're just waiting
01:16:47nobody can change anything
01:16:48none of their efforts
01:16:49it's up to the judges
01:16:52and then when Chuck calls as
01:16:54and the winner is
01:16:55at that second
01:16:56it affects an awful lot of people's lives
01:16:58one guy's going to go out
01:17:00maybe we'll have a new champion
01:17:01maybe he'll retain his title
01:17:02but believe me
01:17:03there is tension
01:17:05especially for these people that I mentioned
01:17:07I've been through it a lot of times
01:17:15many a time I'd have one of my guys fight
01:17:17and I'd be sure he won
01:17:19but again in the back it always be out
01:17:21but you can't be too sure
01:17:23maybe somebody saw something that I didn't see
01:17:25and you're just so uptight
01:17:27until finally they make that decision
01:17:33Manny Stewart doesn't look too happy
01:17:35and Stan Tischler isn't exactly dancing around the ring
01:17:39you don't see
01:17:40and neither of the fighters is being
01:17:42held up on anybody's shoulders
01:17:43this is a tense moment
01:17:45and I think the crowd feels the same way
01:17:51and I think
01:17:53Greg Hauvin is shaking everybody's hand
01:17:56and you know we used to get an idea of who won to fight
01:17:59by watching the photographers
01:18:00somehow they'd always be over taking pictures of the right guy
01:18:03all right now let's go off the ring announcer Chuck Ho
01:18:10ladies and gentlemen here is the decision of the judges
01:18:14judge Robert Cox scores
01:18:18143 Haugen
01:18:20140
01:18:22check that
01:18:24check that
01:18:31sorry
01:18:37Tony
01:18:42Well, let's see what Chuck Cole comes up with now.
01:19:02Tension and more tension.
01:19:05Now, ladies and gentlemen, here is the decision of the judges.
01:19:10One judge scores 143, 143.
01:19:14The bout is even.
01:19:17Judge Art Lurie scores 143, 142.
01:19:24Judge Ed Levine scores 144, 141.
01:19:31For the winner by majority decision, and you.
01:19:35How do you think the world is open?
01:19:42Let's get these two guys together here, Stan, if you don't mind.
01:19:55It was a great 15-round battle.
01:19:57Let's talk first with Greg.
01:19:58Obviously, you're elated.
01:19:59You had to be worried about a fight that could be scored so close because every round appeared
01:20:04to be close to us, although on our card, we had you the winner, Greg.
01:20:10What were your thoughts going into the last round?
01:20:12I knew it was real close, and I had to, you know, anytime you fight a champion, you got
01:20:27to beat him decisively.
01:20:28And Jimmy's been a real good champion, and I thought it was close.
01:20:31You know, it was give and take the whole fight.
01:20:34You know, he won a couple rounds, and I'd come back and win a couple rounds.
01:20:37He hit me with a couple big shots, and I was in good shape, and I could take him.
01:20:41I give him a lot of credit.
01:20:43Jimmy, I know you've got to be disappointed, obviously.
01:20:46Any questions about the decision?
01:20:48Oh, nothing.
01:20:49I've just been fighting pretty regularly in my body.
01:20:51I just kind of wore down, you know, from training over a long time.
01:20:54Well, we had the feeling, Gil Clancy and I, that you did not look yourself.
01:20:57You didn't look real physically sharp.
01:20:59You seemed to try to get it going a little later on, and there was no gas in the tank.
01:21:03Oh, no.
01:21:04When I felt real tired, you know, still today for some reason.
01:21:07But, you know, I can't argue with what the decision they gave.
01:21:10All right, Jimmy.
01:21:11Well, we know you'll be back.
01:21:12You've been a great champion.
01:21:13You're still one of the very best lightweights in the world.
01:21:16Greg Hagen, this has got to be a tremendously exciting moment for you.
01:21:20You came into this fight a virtual unknown.
01:21:22I don't think too many people looking in on Showtime tonight outside of Auburn, Washington,
01:21:26maybe Anchorage, Alaska, and Las Vegas really know who you are.
01:21:30And here you are now, champion of the world.
01:21:32When's it going to sink in?
01:21:33Oh, it sunk in.
01:21:34A lot of hard work for this fight.
01:21:36I don't take none away from Jimmy.
01:21:38He's a hell of a champion.
01:21:39I fought my heart out.
01:21:41I come in here knowing that I had to take the title from Jimmy.
01:21:44You know, it's not an easy job taking the title from the champion.
01:21:48Well, there's your belt.
01:21:49Let's pull back if we can here and show that championship belt.
01:21:52Greg, how much of that experience in tough man contests do you think has contributed to your success?
01:22:00A lot of people would say, how can that be any kind of preparation for the pros?
01:22:04Mentally, it must have been something.
01:22:06Oh, it was.
01:22:07I had a lot of experience up there.
01:22:09I fought a lot of tough guys.
01:22:10You know, it was a survival for the fittest.
01:22:13I was fighting guys that weighed 195 and I had to stick and move to stay away from them.
01:22:19And, you know, I knew this fight was going to be a tough fight.
01:22:23I trained my heart out for this fight and, you know, I was in the best shape of my life.
01:22:27I knew it was close, you know, and anytime you fight a champion, you got to beat him decisively.
01:22:32Well, Greg, you did a great job.
01:22:33Congratulations to you.
01:22:34Now, one of the three lightweight champions in the world.
01:22:37What do you want next?
01:22:38I don't care.
01:22:39Camacho, you know, I'm there.
01:22:41Raging reeking.
01:22:42I'll knock him out.
01:22:43All right.
01:22:44Greg Haugen, the IBF lightweight champion of the world.
01:22:48And this guy was a four to one underdog here in Las Vegas, virtually nobody giving him much of a shot,
01:22:54a shot against the experience of Jimmy Paul.
01:22:57And here is a guy that, as I said, had the support of the Las Vegas crowd.
01:23:03But on the other hand, I think there was a lot of doubt in their minds,
01:23:06even though they were hoping that this young man could pull off the upset.
01:23:10There was not a whole lot of conviction, but they are enjoying his victory now,
01:23:14along with his girlfriend.
01:23:16His mom is here.
01:23:17And for Greg Haugen, again, someone who is not exactly a household word.
01:23:22Now, this is a tremendous, tremendous victory over the very tough and experienced
01:23:27flying champion, Jimmy Paul.
01:23:31Well, here on Showtime Boxing Throughout 1980.
