00:00The last few years backpacking through Mexico, now that she's back in her hometown of Duluth,
00:05she's ready to buy a house. This is exactly the kind of quirky thing I love. She wants character
00:11and an eccentric style to match her free spirit. Like all of my chakras are just like buzzing right
00:17now with happiness and joy because of this. But her friend Matt's along to keep her grounded.
00:23This definitely reminds me of an 80s school shower. Mistakes were made.
00:30Hi kiddo, how's it going? Yeah? How's Vienna? I am the executive chef at an organic restaurant.
00:51I am a total free spirit. I have lived on a commune. I started one. So anarchy, free food,
00:58lots of hugs and love. I am a single mom, but my daughter is out traveling in Europe right now.
01:05Have you found any cool hostels to stay at? After my daughter graduated from high school
01:10and she went off to college out in Portland, Oregon, I moved to Mexico and traveled for two years. So I
01:17moved back to Duluth a year and a half ago. And it's been fun renting, but I want to create a living
01:25space where I and my daughter feel comfortable and my friends feel welcome. He's good. How are you?
01:30Not bad. Yay. I'm good.
01:34All right, Matt's here. I got to let you go. We got a practice for a big show this weekend.
01:38I'm bringing Matt with me on my house hunting adventure. I'm an environmental educator and I
01:42work at the local nature center. So we met about 11 years ago. She taught me how to fire spin.
01:47We dated for a hot minute, I would say. But we decided that we were better friends. And I have
01:52rose colored glasses on at all times. And so it's nice to have somebody like Matt that can be a
01:58little bit more realist. I really hope that my next place has taller ceilings. That would be nice and
02:04make this easier. Yeah. And that way we can practice in the winter. I really like the cottage style
02:10house that feels quirky and fun. A lot of color on the inside, like quirky little nooks and crannies.
02:17I mean, good luck with that. What I like about older homes in Duluth is a lot of the woodworking
02:25that's in them. I do live in an old home, so I don't like a lot of things about the old homes.
02:30They are outdated. I mean, it's so convenient to live on the hillside. And my job is right here on the
02:37hillside too. So that would be really cool if I could bike to work. And where I can get really
02:42good lake views. I was going to say the lake views are key there. I don't think there's any other
02:45reason to live in Duluth. Like, you're on the biggest lake in the world. That's why people are here.
02:51I mean, if I get an old house, then I'm definitely going to have to do some remodeling to get
02:55an open concept kitchen. So then I can sit there at the stove and cook and talk to my friends and
03:02just kind of host. And I would love a yard. I mean, we could practice spinning, but
03:07I'm also going to have to shovel more when you're gone. She is very charming and gets a lot of help
03:12from people. Like you? Yes. Actually, the perfect world would be that there's a separate living space
03:19for my daughter to be so that she can have some privacy and it doesn't feel like she's still
03:24living at home with mom. And that's going to cost more. It is probably going to cost more. So I know I
03:30got approved at about $300,000, probably a little over, but I would prefer to stay in the $200,000 range.
03:39I'd say just go for it. It's way easier to spend the money up front. I bought a house about five years
03:43ago for $175,000 and I've had to put a lot of money into getting everything that I actually wanted.
03:50I think she should push the limit because I don't want to have to come over and help her
03:54do a lot of things. So this house is a little cottage and it's $275,000 with supposedly a really
04:05great lake view. But as a good lake view, though, you're probably getting a lot less house. Yeah.
04:11Oh, here it is. Front yard has a hill. I guess you just climb the grass. Right.
04:17I like the tan and the red tones on it. Like the flowers. Hi guys. Welcome to the view. Thanks.
04:30This is kind of like the dreamy front porch. Solid. I can totally see myself enjoying this view
04:36all year round. I know that this is close to your work. It is. And this does come with parking. So
04:43has a two-car parking pad in the back. Okay. I can dig that. What is that? So there used to be
04:51a wood-burning fireplace there that they took out, which could be easily re-added. Oh, really?
04:56Mm-hmm. Ceiling's awesome. A little low. Not too bad, though. It's kind of cute, though.
05:01Could you guys do your fire dancing in here? I could. This is a great view. Yeah? Do you think
05:07it's better than yours or yours is better? I mean, mine's better, but you know. Of course it is. I mean,
05:11this will be even better in the fall, like when some of these maples lose their leaves. If you
05:16poison some of those trees across the way, you'd have a better view, too. Yeah, we're not poisoning
05:20the neighbor's trees. I've known Jillian for 20 years, and I love working with her, but she has,
05:26you know, a funky lifestyle. She needs a place to fire spin. I mean, have you ever met a fire spinner?
05:30I haven't. In Duluth, when you have a view at this price point, things are going to go fast.
05:36People are always looking for a view. This is what makes Duluth special. Here is the first bedroom.
05:41Of the three. I don't know if they have a primary here. Okay.
05:45Mm-hmm. Okay. Specifically, so it would get to be your choice. Okay.
05:49That's kind of tight, but maybe this would be my daughter's room, and she doesn't have much furniture.
05:55Here's the only bathroom. Oh. Main floor. Oh, it's tiny. There's just no place to put my stuff,
06:01right? Like, I'm a girl. I have all kinds of stuff. You're not going to be able to get much in here,
06:06but this is just one bathroom in this house, right? Mm-hmm. And then here is the second bedroom
06:11on this level. Maybe more of a glorified closet. I'm, actually, that's not a bad idea. I have
06:16a suitcase and four or five bags full of costume stuff for a fire spinning, and it would be really
06:22fun to have a room where I could just throw them all over the floor and on the couch and have some
06:28mirrors. We come back through here, and I think you're going to like this. It's all wood.
06:33That is a tight staircase. But look at this magical space up here. Oh, my God. This is so
06:43cute. This is exactly the kind of quirky thing I love. Yeah, I'm sure you do. This would be my
06:50bedroom. I put my kiddo in one of those, like, littler rooms downstairs, which would be nice. Like,
06:56a floor separation is really... Yes. No bathroom up here, though. You could add three-quarter
07:02shower sink toilet. Yeah. If the bathroom took up half of this, then this could be an actual
07:07sitting area, bed, yoga. Not yourself. I am not really on the same page with you. I would hang
07:14out up here. Let's go see the rest. Over here, we have the kitchen. Butcher block countertop. Yeah,
07:23that's nice. With some mixed wood. Updated. It's not really that open concept. It is definitely not
07:29the open concept. If I was entertaining, I would be in kitchen jail. With the view, we have to
07:35compromise a little bit. Yeah, I suppose. Wow, the backyard. This is really nice. That's actually a
07:45pretty decent spot for fire spinning. I don't like it. I mean, it's angled. You're just asking for an
07:50ankle roll. Yeah. Mm-hmm. I love this lake view. Great lake view. It's so good. I love the bedroom
08:01upstairs. My daughter could live here. There's a little bit of separation there, but not a lot.
08:06Mm-hmm. The thought of my daughter and I sharing one bathroom. Two women, one bathroom. Uh, not so
08:13great. Granted, there's a possibility to put one upstairs. Kitchen is not the open concept that I want.
08:19I think you should look at something that's a little more expensive, but has everything done
08:26ahead of time. So she does seem to take the positive attitude in a lot of places.
08:32This house, I think she could make it work, but it's not ideal for her.
08:39Jillian agrees to see a pricier option, but she's a tough sell.
08:43It better have everything done at that price.
08:54We're up in a neighborhood that's pretty far from downtown.
08:59Not a lot of lake views in this area.
09:01No, there is no lake view. We're so far away.
09:04But this next house is a big updated ranch with the square footage and two bathrooms Jillian wants.
09:10Three-bedroom, two-bath, $315,000.
09:16Nice. I'm proud of you.
09:18Not nice. Going up.
09:18Nice. That's terrible.
09:21It means it's going to have everything done for you already.
09:24It better have everything done at that price. That seems crazy.
09:28Right.
09:33Not that many steps, huh?
09:34No, it should be easy to shovel.
09:35I guess it's a ranch.
09:37Right.
09:37Not usually my favorite.
09:39Hi, everybody.
09:40Hi.
09:41Welcome.
09:42Hey.
09:42Thanks.
09:44Hardwood floors.
09:46I like the tile.
09:48Oh, I like the trees. It's like a nice shade cover.
09:51Maple tree, too. You can tap that.
09:53Nice.
09:55I do like the ceilings.
09:56Tall enough to spin inside.
09:57Oh, they're all tall.
10:00Ah!
10:02Oh, my God.
10:03I just got chills.
10:08This is even better than I thought of an open kitchen.
10:11Oh, a little mini subway tile?
10:12This is what I have in my bathroom at my country house.
10:15It's the same style.
10:16After you.
10:17Oh, my gosh.
10:20I know.
10:20No way, Jessie.
10:22All screened in.
10:23A nice fenced backyard.
10:25Do you guys think there's room back there to spin and practice?
10:28If there was no swing set.
10:29Okay.
10:30This is the total party house.
10:32Right?
10:32I'm in my forties.
10:33I don't have ragers anymore.
10:35But, I mean, I...
10:36You have dinner parties.
10:37I have dinner parties now.
10:39Galas.
10:40Yes.
10:42Does this come with the house?
10:44That probably would come with the house.
10:46Careful.
10:47You need to push.
10:48Easy.
10:48Yes.
10:49Yes.
10:52Oh.
10:54This is so cool.
10:56Oh, my gosh.
10:57I grew up with one of these.
10:58This is morning coffee area.
11:00Oh, my gosh.
11:00I love that fort.
11:01Oh, my gosh.
11:02We have two bedrooms on this level and a full bath.
11:05So, this is the primary.
11:07It is.
11:07Can definitely fit a king, which this one is.
11:09Oh, yeah.
11:11Closet's not huge.
11:12But, yeah, probably a dresser would go here.
11:15That is nice.
11:16That's pretty big for Duluth.
11:17It is, actually.
11:19Okay.
11:20Here's the bathroom sink that I've been talking about that you can put all your stuff.
11:24That you do love.
11:25Right?
11:25Yes.
11:25Yes.
11:26This definitely reminds me of an 80s school shower.
11:29Like a gym?
11:30Yeah.
11:31Mistakes were made.
11:33Mistakes were made.
11:34That can all be changed.
11:35That's so true.
11:36And doesn't have to be done right away.
11:38Yeah.
11:39Here's the other bedroom on this level.
11:41Oh, it's got pink walls.
11:45Maybe it's too close for a kiddo room.
11:48Yeah.
11:48Right.
11:49It's nice to have a little separate.
11:50There's another bedroom in here.
11:51There is another bedroom downstairs.
11:55So, they did recently remodel this basement.
11:58They added a bedroom and a living space.
12:01This is actually a lot nicer than I thought it was going to be.
12:04Here's the bedroom down here.
12:06It's definitely bed-against-the-wall kind of space.
12:09Yeah.
12:10Even has a little ladder there to get out.
12:12That's kind of cool.
12:14I haven't seen that before.
12:15Me neither.
12:16Emergency, emergency, evacuate.
12:19And then here's the three-quarter bathroom.
12:22Is this tile?
12:23No.
12:23This is the spongy tile I was telling you about.
12:26Oh, yeah.
12:27It's not real tile.
12:29It's like flexy.
12:30Right?
12:31It's like...
12:32Foam?
12:32Yeah.
12:33Weird.
12:34It's a thing.
12:35Better than linoleum.
12:37Yeah.
12:38And then this is sort of the living area for down here.
12:41Do you think Aurora would be okay down here?
12:43It doesn't feel like warm and cozy.
12:44Well, it's not warm and cozy.
12:45It's a basement.
12:46They're not warm and cozy.
12:47My guess is she'd hang out upstairs, so...
12:49But she could retreat down here when she wants to get away from mom.
12:52Yeah.
12:52So this could be the music room.
12:54Makeout corner.
12:55Sorry.
12:58It looks basic on the outside.
13:00It looks really kind of like boring, normal ranch.
13:03Yeah.
13:03But this space right here is making me tingle.
13:08Like, all of my chakras are just, like, buzzing right now with happiness and joy because of this.
13:15I had a great backyard for entertaining.
13:17High ceilings.
13:18Not many projects.
13:19Well, and the only thing this one doesn't have is a lake view.
13:22And it is really, really far from my work.
13:24It is more than I want to spend, though.
13:27I think it's worth it.
13:28Spend it up front.
13:29I've been through the remodel.
13:30It's not fun.
13:31The main living spaces are fabulous.
13:35Fantastic.
13:35But this price says, um, I don't get to have any fun because I don't have any extra money.
13:44So Jesse finds a lower-priced home, but it needs a few repairs.
13:49Do you want a remodel, too?
13:50Like, it's not fun.
13:57I'm telling you, all of the cool kids live over here.
14:00Well, I live here, so yeah.
14:02I know.
14:03Jillian and Matt are headed to a big traditional house.
14:05And while the price is good, there is a trade-off.
14:08I have no idea if there's a lake view.
14:11Oof.
14:12Yeah.
14:17It kind of has that cottage feel to it.
14:20Right.
14:21Hi.
14:23How's it going?
14:23Come on in.
14:25It's very pink.
14:26Very pink.
14:28Oh, the floors look awesome.
14:30That seems a little short, especially if you're, like, spinning inside.
14:33Can you touch it?
14:35Yes.
14:36Oh.
14:37We have four bed, two baths here, over 2,400 square feet.
14:42I'm excited to show you why.
14:44Oh, my gosh.
14:44That is so much house.
14:46This has room for your daughter to come live with you, but more maintenance and less lake view.
14:51Okay.
14:51And then here we've got the kitchen.
14:53I know you wanted open kitchen, but tell me what you think in here.
14:56Oh, new appliances.
14:59Oh, my God.
14:59It's gas.
15:00And it's gas.
15:01Nice.
15:02I totally love all of the new appliances in here.
15:05It feels modern and workable.
15:08Is it possible, do you think, to take this wall out?
15:12Then it would feel like these two spaces are kind of, like, one space, as opposed to the hidden galley kitchen, you know, with the housewife in the corner.
15:22Would that be really expensive?
15:24You know, kitchen remodels do get expensive.
15:2710,000 to 20,000, depending on what you need.
15:29Yeah.
15:30It's a lot.
15:31It's a lot.
15:31Do you want a remodel, too?
15:33Like, that's a lot of work.
15:34Yeah.
15:35It's not fun.
15:36And it's kind of in that price range where it would be, I wouldn't have extra slush fund money.
15:42All right.
15:42Let's continue outside and see what we got.
15:46I love this area.
15:48I can totally see parties.
15:53Do you want a yard this big?
15:55I don't know.
15:57Do you want to take care of a yard this big?
15:59Maybe.
15:59So, if we come this way, there is a separate door entrance, and this goes downstairs to a little one-bedroom, one-bath apartment.
16:10No way.
16:11Yes.
16:12I love this color, too.
16:14Do you love it?
16:14Yeah.
16:15Pretty short ceilings, again.
16:18Shorter than upstairs.
16:19Yeah.
16:20Over here, we have one-bedroom.
16:22Perfect spot for Aurora, huh?
16:24Right.
16:25And then this is your three-quarter bath.
16:27It is definitely a smaller bathroom.
16:28It is definitely cozy.
16:30Yeah.
16:31Do you think your daughter would like this?
16:32I hope so.
16:33This kind of seems like it would be perfect, right?
16:36Because that was a separate entrance, you said?
16:37Yes.
16:38With, like, a coat area.
16:40Yeah.
16:40And so I could just, like, kind of lock the door into the basement, and she could have her own space.
16:45Yeah, come to the kitchen.
16:46Yeah.
16:49Upstairs, we have three bedrooms and one bath.
16:52Oh, my gosh.
16:54It's huge.
16:56Clawfoot tub.
16:57It's beautiful wood floors.
16:59And then this is what I imagine would be your space.
17:03Oh, I love this yellow.
17:06The funky colors.
17:07Yeah.
17:07Whoa.
17:08It's barely a view, huh?
17:10Right.
17:11It's like a sliver of the lake.
17:12Right.
17:12It still counts, though.
17:14It's a lake view.
17:15So this is the second bedroom.
17:16It feels really calm in here.
17:19Lake view.
17:20Oh, the trees.
17:22It's a little bit.
17:24All right, then over here we have the last bedroom.
17:26I mean, it's definitely more bedrooms than I need.
17:28I know.
17:28I got to heat and cool all the space.
17:33It is bigger than I need, kind of by a lot.
17:36But I do like that there's that basement apartment.
17:40I'm in love with outside spaces.
17:42Really like this kitchen.
17:43I like the design.
17:45But it is, like, closed.
17:47Yeah.
17:48To open up to that wall, that would be, take away a lot of your cabinet space.
17:53I would prefer a better lake view.
17:55Great.
17:56Love the wood.
17:56Love the color.
17:57Love the charm.
17:59Accessibility to your work.
18:01I think there's a lot of shoveling to do.
18:03I think it might be a little big for you.
18:04Like, you don't want your house to own you.
18:06Yeah.
18:07Lots to think about.
18:13Hi.
18:16Hey.
18:16How's it going?
18:18Good.
18:18I just made some food, and I would love to go upstairs and sit down and talk about houses
18:23with you.
18:23What do you think?
18:24I'm game.
18:28Remember the bungalow?
18:30I do.
18:30That one had the lake view that you can't buy.
18:33It was all the wood and the wings on the sides, and I could walk to work.
18:37It wasn't really a place you could spin in that house.
18:40It was small.
18:41And it wasn't that open concept you're looking for.
18:43No.
18:44Adding a bathroom is big.
18:47So what was your favorite kitchen that we looked at?
18:49Very obviously the updated ranch.
18:51Had a great yard.
18:52It could spin fire.
18:54High ceilings.
18:55The only drawback was no lake view.
18:57Yeah.
18:58It was far from my work.
18:59I don't know that my kiddo would like to live in that basement.
19:02But you're not going to have to spend money updating anything.
19:06I know, but it's so expensive.
19:09What I really liked about the big traditional is the huge separation of space for my kiddo
19:15and I.
19:16It's not the cookie cutter that everybody else has.
19:18That one also had really good outdoor entertaining spaces.
19:22In the neighborhood where all my friends like you live.
19:25And there's a lake view.
19:26Well, kind of.
19:28The kitchen was not open concept.
19:31There's not a good place for us to like spend indoors.
19:34A lot of shoveling.
19:35A lot of projects.
19:37Do you think you need that much space?
19:38It does feel really big.
19:50Rocks?
19:51You're moving rocks?
19:52I am moving rocks.
19:55I chose the big traditional.
19:58I can bike to work.
19:59All of the open space, the hardwood floors, the beautiful kitchen, the basement area for
20:04my daughter, the amazing yard, my tarot cards.
20:08Nice.
20:08The house was listed for $275,000.
20:12I offered $282,000 and got accepted.
20:14I closed a week ago.
20:16I am still planning how to move in.
20:19My daughter has seen the house.
20:20She kind of did a run through when she came back from her travels and then took off again.
20:25And I think she liked it.
20:26I think I got the seal of approval.
20:28I think this will be a good place to practice fire spinning.
20:30Obviously not inside, but the side yard seems like it'd be a great place.
20:35I have my tools with me too.
20:37You do.
20:38Can we burn some?
20:38Yes.
20:39Let's light it up.
20:40I didn't get the giant panorama lake view, but technically I can see the lake.
20:47I did not get an open kitchen, but I think that the kitchen is big enough and there is
20:51a possibility to open it in the future if I have the time, energy, money, wherewithal
20:57to do a big remodel.
21:00Sorry about that.
21:01You didn't want that grass anyway, did you?
21:03I like finding where all of my stuff goes in the house, right?
21:07Like, I think it's going to go here and then you try it there and you're like, no, that's
21:10not really the spot.
21:11And then you try it over here and then, oh, what about this?
21:14And what about that?
21:15And I could try this here.
21:16And it's a whole process and it takes like six months probably.
21:19I'm looking forward to the projects actually.
21:21I'm really looking forward to making this house my home.
