THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine is seeing a stronger need for Tobago's Autonomy. This after he was not informed by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar of military works being conducted in Tobago by the United States. More from Elizabeth Williams.
00:00It's very common that these agreements are made and chief secretaries are not involved.
00:07We have had agreements made with neighboring Caribbean and CARICOM territories to Tobago
00:13over, for example, use of our waters, for which Tobago was just never consulted before those agreements.
00:21So that's pretty common and, of course, sharpens the conversation
00:29and the request for us to speed up this issue with Tobago Autonomy and what that means.
00:36Mr. Augustine said in the past, a similar radar system was installed at Stubbles Bay in Trinidad.
00:42He then sought to allay all fears in the matter.
00:46I want to allay some fears over this matter.
00:52I have said something that I've also heard the Prime Minister say.
00:56I've heard the Prime Minister say that Trinidad and Tobago has not taken a position whereby
01:03it is using its soil, its waters to launch any attack against any other foreign and sovereign territory.
01:17And so essentially Trinidad and Tobago is not a part of any war.
01:21I don't know that Trinidad and Tobago could stop Trump from doing whatever Trump wants to do.
01:28On Saturday, the chief secretary was joined by Minister of Defense Wayne Sturge, Attorney General John Jeremy and Chief of Defense Staff Don Polo,
01:37where some aspects of the installed radar system was explained and him not being informed beforehand as he is not on the National Security Council.
01:47Meantime, Augustine said, besides the roadworks and radar system, fueling capacity is needed to advance the opening of the new A&R Robinson International Airport expansion.
02:00I did share the extent of the kind of civil work that is required, and that's of course not the only civil work required for the airport to be open.
02:11There are other matters that they are currently treating with, including getting fuel directly to the terminal there.
02:18In July of 2024, Chief Secretary Fahli Augustine was invited to the National Security Council by the previous PNM administration.
