Head of the Tobago Business Chamber Martin George said the defeat of the Tobago Autonomy bills in Parliament came as no surprise to him, as it was nothing more than a political charade. More in this Elizabeth Williams report.

Transcript
00:00It's actually not a surprise at all that the Tobago autonomy bills were defeated in the Parliament today.
00:08It appears that the regular charade of these bills being brought forth and the shenanigans which accompany them,
00:19it's been played out once again in the National Parliament.
00:24Mr George said political parties continue to play political football with the Tobago autonomy issue.
00:30Too often it appears that the political leaders, they use this as a political football
00:38and they have Tobagonians chasing behind the ball, running up and down the field
00:44while they keep shifting the goalposts on them each time so that it becomes impossible to score.
00:50George said financial autonomy and independence are necessary.
00:55He then used the analogy of parents to their children.
00:59You think of a simple scenario of a child growing up at home.
01:03When you are small, you depend on your parents.
01:06They are the ones who have to take care of you to provide food, clothing, shelter, etc.
01:11But when you are grown and you become a man and you are earning your own money,
01:16you don't have to ask them if you can move out and go on your own or rent somewhere on your own
01:22because you are financially capable of doing so.
01:25So once again I urge Tobagonians to start focusing on achieving that level of financial autonomy and independence.
