This is an apple. Some people might try to tell you that it's a banana.
00:05
Have you seen CNN's new ad for its Facts First campaign? The spot denounces
00:09
President Donald Trump's fake news claims using an apple. Ellen DeGeneres and
00:14
Stephen Colbert both took the ad one step further on their shows and things got
00:17
B-A-N-A-N-A-S. Now, DeGeneres, as a woman of the people, broke down the ad by
00:22
doing a live demonstration. The apple represents the facts. The banana stands
00:26
for fake news. And all of this is in response to the things that the
00:30
president has said. He'll be represented by this orange. She also brought out a
00:35
pineapple wearing a wig and glasses to represent CNN host Anderson Cooper. And
00:40
to make sure her audience was following along, DeGeneres gave them a little
00:43
quiz. Can you tell that this is a banana? Wrong. It's plastic. It's fake. The talk
00:49
show host concluded the complicated segment by saying, I hope we learned
00:53
something about what's real or not real. And I hope we learned a lot about fruit
00:56
food as well. This cost me $53 at Whole Foods, you guys. Over on CBS's The Late
01:01
Show, Colbert also wanted to make sure his audience really understood the
01:04
message that the fruitful ad was trying to convey. The host explained that he
01:08
personally found the spot to be a bit subtle, so he decided to come up with a
01:12
slightly more honest version. As Colbert said, see if you can pick up on the
01:16
message.
01:16
They'll say the banana did a great job helping Puerto Rico. You'll say, actually,
01:21
most of the island is still lacking pa-
01:22
STAND FOR THE NATIONAL BANANTHEM!
01:24
The spoof also tackled White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the
01:28
Russians, and it ended with this.
01:30
Now, orange, you ready to impeach?
01:32
But just to make sure it was completely clear, the last frame displayed a very
01:36
straightforward message. That was about Trump. To watch both DeGeneres and Colbert's full
01:41
takes on the CNN fruit ad, head to THR.com and let us know what you thought of their
01:45
spoofs in the comments. For The Hollywood Reporter News, I'm Tiffany Taylor. Have a great day.
