00:00:00All right, Howard, and the big one is still...
00:00:02...and surprisingly good bout in which Greg Page knocked out Tillis, Jim Quick-Tillis, in the eighth round.
00:00:10Now, who is Randall Tex Cobb?
00:00:13Never been in prime time before, and we don't think we can take you into this fight
00:00:18with Cobb challenging the likes of Larry Holmes without acquainting you with the kind of person he is
00:00:25and what his boxing history has been.
00:00:28So let's begin with the young man who has a record of 20-2 as we capsulize his past boxing history.
00:00:38August 2nd, 1980, round two, Cobb's first fight against a named opponent, Ernie Shavers.
00:00:43Shavers giving it to Cobb. Cobb, a tree trunk of a man, indefatigable and indomitable,
00:00:50taking the best Shavers could offer, then coming back in the same round
00:00:54and giving it to Shavers, punishing him again and again and again,
00:00:58and he kept it up until the eighth round when the referee...
00:01:24...
00:01:33...
00:01:34...
00:01:34...
00:01:35...
00:01:35...
00:01:54.
00:02:24.
00:02:54Dex, as I read the print medium, you're given no chance at all against Holmes.
00:03:04It's like this fight should not have even been licensed.
00:03:07Do you have an answer?
00:03:09Well, it's certainly amazing when you think of all the tremendous accuracy that the people, the boxing experts, have made.
00:03:18And I believe the latest has been the thing with Arguello and Pryor, which favored Arguello two to one.
00:03:24So you're not fazed by what's been printed?
00:03:28Printed, said, and animated, or even screened from the rooftops, friend.
00:03:33That's somebody's opinion, which has not been the kind of thing that I have based my life on.
00:03:39You're not troubled by Holmes' impeccable record and his clearly established boxing skills.
00:03:46How will you go at him?
00:03:48Dead solid.
00:03:49Full speed.
00:03:50In other words, you will keep coming forward.
00:03:54Won't you be playing into his hands?
00:03:57Well, now, if I was to back up and out-box him, I would be playing into his hands, wouldn't I, Howie?
00:04:02You know, you're a good guy and a good interview.
00:04:07Now, let me ask you this much.
00:04:09Much has been made of the fact that he will cut you up with his jab, your tendency to cut, your reaction to that.
00:04:16Well, I believe that just most people getting read in the ring do bleed.
00:04:22And I feel as though there's always the potential of getting cut.
00:04:25And after all, I am a white boy.
00:04:27So I do have a tendency toward that area.
00:04:30However, I feel like if I keep my hands up, my head moving, and if I keep him on his butt, well, then I won't be bleeding near as much as everybody thinks.
00:04:37Do you believe you can deck him, having seen him decked by Shavers and by Ronaldo Snipes?
00:04:43Having seen him decked by Ronaldo Snipes, I believe I can knock him dead.
00:04:48Good luck to you, my friend.
00:04:50Thank you very much.
00:04:53And there, as we come back live to the Astrodome, is the champion.
00:04:58And I mean the champion.
00:04:59I don't care about WBA and WBC.
00:05:03This man is a fine fighter.
00:05:05And we will be talking with Larry Holmes.
00:05:10We'll return for more of this ABC Sports exclusive after this commercial and a word from our local stations.
00:05:19Larry Holmes always longed for public acceptance and public recognition of him as a great champion.
00:05:26He got both when on June 11, 1982, little more than five months ago,
00:05:33excuse me, he knocked out Jerry Cooney in the 13th round in Las Vegas.
00:05:39Let's go back.
00:05:40Look at some of the highlights of that fight and then my talk with Larry Holmes about Cobb and tonight.
00:05:47Cooney's talking, Holmes dancing, lots of movement.
00:06:00A good blow by Holmes, a good right.
00:06:03And it's called a knockdown.
00:06:07It is called a knockdown.
00:06:09Holmes scored with the right.
00:06:10And Cooney went down, the first knockdown of the fight, but the knockdown by Holmes, not by Jerry Cooney.
00:06:21And the left got into the belt.
00:06:25A good right by Cooney.
00:06:26Cooney, a much better round for Cooney.
00:06:29A much better round.
00:06:33Another good right by Cooney.
00:06:35Cooney's coming on in this round.
00:06:39Cooney the aggressive.
00:06:44Angie Dundee used to call Jerry a one-armed bandit.
00:06:47Say he can only fly with the left.
00:06:49Cooney, Cooney getting it now from Holmes.
00:06:52For a moment looked like Jerry might go down.
00:06:55Holmes is really laying it all over.
00:07:02Cooney is not in good shape.
00:07:05Suddenly a Holmes attack.
00:07:10And Cooney brought out of it.
00:07:12With the left is the round ended.
00:07:20This is where experience comes in.
00:07:22Oh, boy.
00:07:23Oh!
00:07:35Good round so far for Cooney.
00:07:39Good comeback round for Jerry Cooney.
00:07:45I see fatigue in Larry Holmes.
00:07:48That's why there's no movement.
00:07:52Larry Holmes is in trouble.
00:07:54He's covering.
00:07:56The one right is hardly an answer.
00:07:59And then another right.
00:08:01Cooney is fighting with a viciousness born of desperation.
00:08:05And he is succeeding.
00:08:06But he remains vulnerable to the Holmes' right.
00:08:19Now it's getting a little sloppy because both men are tired.
00:08:24And Holmes trying to tee off and doesn't have the strength left.
00:08:29I don't think.
00:08:30And Jerry's ready to go.
00:08:32There it is.
00:08:32Valley is calling it off.
00:08:40Let the scene speak.
00:08:47Tech says he's going to knock you out.
00:08:49Talks like he believes it.
00:08:50Give him any chance at all?
00:08:52Well, you heard that before, Howard.
00:08:54All fighters thinking that they can go in and knock a person out.
00:08:57But Tex is fighting a fighter that he never dreamed that he was going to fight before in his life.
00:09:03I'm going to give Tex Cobb a boxing lesson.
00:09:06I'm going to make him drunk before I mug him.
00:09:09And it's going to be like that all night long.
00:09:11In other words, the fight plans are obvious.
00:09:13Use the jab.
00:09:14Use the ring.
00:09:15Cut him to ribbons.
00:09:16And finally put him away.
00:09:18If I can, Howard, our Tex Cobb is known to take a good punch.
00:09:22He's durable.
00:09:24And I've just got to take his strength away from him.
00:09:27If I can take his strength away from him, I will knock him out.
00:09:29I don't feel that he's a better fighter than anybody that I've fought.
00:09:35I don't feel that he's as good as a lot of fighters that I've fought.
00:09:37But I know that he's durable.
00:09:39He's going to be there.
00:09:40And after what I worked so hard for, that's the heavyweight championship.
00:09:43I'm expecting a good fight.
00:09:44It seems to me, on a career basis, Larry, and we've been together so long, you have two problems.
00:09:51One, advancing years.
00:09:53Two, not taking your opponents too lightly.
00:09:56And maybe three, finding somebody to fight.
00:09:59Now, do you cope with those problems in your own mind?
00:10:02Well, I know my age is getting old as far as fighters go at 33 years old.
00:10:08But I'm a healthy 33.
00:10:09Muhammad Ali fought until he was 40.
00:10:11I feel that I have taken care of myself better than Muhammad Ali.
00:10:15And the whole game is that I fought everybody out here to fight.
00:10:19And I'm still willing to give other fighters the opportunity to try to take my title away.
00:10:24But that does not bother me.
00:10:25I'm doing things that I like.
00:10:27Until I don't like to do it anymore, I'll back down and let somebody else have.
00:10:31But right now, I feel good about myself.
00:10:33And I'm going to continue to do it until I no longer feel good about it.
00:10:37The final problem, though, continues to be incentive.
00:10:41You've already told me you've fought better fighters than Cobb in the past.
00:10:45How can you get yourself any incentive for this occasion?
00:10:48Two things, Howard.
00:10:50My mind and my body.
00:10:51That's all I have.
00:10:53And I know if I don't take care of these two things,
00:10:55and I know Cobb will try to do something to it.
00:10:58So this gives me an incentive.
00:11:01The incentive to be heavyweight champion after 40 fights, after 41 fights.
00:11:05The incentive to be able to go and grow and let my kids stand up and be proud of their father.
00:11:11And this is what I work for, and this is what I'm going to continue to work for.
00:11:15Any afterthoughts about the CUNY fight?
00:11:20Because a key expert in pay TV has told me on national television,
00:11:25a CUNY return within the next year would gross from all sources over $100 million.
00:11:32What's your view?
00:11:33First of all, Howard, it can't be like the first fight.
00:11:36They will have to put the money in the bank before the fight.
00:11:39I can't speculate on $100 million.
00:11:41I can't speculate on $25 million, which I want.
00:11:44But if it would be a second fight, they will have to give me $25 million,
00:11:47put it in the bank, and we will beat Cooney up again
00:11:50because he still can't accept the thing that Larry Holmes beat him.
00:11:55He tried to prove to the world that he can go 15, but he didn't go 15 rounds.
00:11:58And besides all of the garbage, the publicity that they put upon me prior to the fight,
00:12:06I don't feel that they should have done that.
00:12:08I don't feel that they should have done anything like that to any fighter.
00:12:13You do respect Cobb as a person, don't you?
00:12:15Yes, I think he's a very likable person.
00:12:18He's a great human being, and he's done a lot for boxing.
00:12:22He's helped in boxing with the image, and, you know, this is a good fight.
00:12:25But it's not a whole lot of garbage in it or racial problems or anything.
00:12:29This is a fight, and this is the kind of fight I like.
00:12:31So you've got to respect a man like that.
00:12:33Good luck to you.
00:12:34Thank you, Howard, but I'm still going to knock him out.
00:12:37Back live in the Houston Astrodome.
00:12:40Champion Larry Holmes has just entered the ring,
00:12:43and Randy Tex Cobb preceded him the two.
00:12:47Well, they touched gloves as Larry went straight over to Tex,
00:12:52and it was in the manner that Larry described.
00:12:55There has been no ugliness connected with this pre-fight publicity.
00:13:00The whole question about the fight is, will it be a worthy match?
00:13:04We'll see.
00:13:05There is Tex Cobb, and there is his fighting record.
00:13:08And he weighed in at 234 and a quarter.
00:13:12And his body looked rather flaccid to me as I viewed him at the weigh-in.
00:13:17In the meantime, Larry Holmes seems to be in utterly superb shape, 217 and a half.
00:13:24Here's the ring announcer.
00:13:25For the WBC World Heavyweight Championship,
00:13:29our timekeeper, Tommy Ferris.
00:13:32Counting for the knockdown, Jack joins.
00:13:36Judges at ringside, Chuck Hassett from California,
00:13:39Chuck Menker from Nevada,
00:13:41and A.D. Spider Bynum from Texas,
00:13:45the referee, Steve Croson.
00:13:48And now, ladies and gentlemen, the participants.
00:13:51Introducing first, the challenger,
00:13:53weighing 234 and one-quarter pounds from Abilene, Texas,
00:13:59wearing gold trunks with a record of 20 and 2,
00:14:02Randy Tex Cobb.
00:14:04And the current WBC World Heavyweight Champion,
00:14:15undefeated with a record of 40 and 0,
00:14:19weighing 217 and one-half pounds
00:14:22from Eastern Pennsylvania,
00:14:24wearing white trunks,
00:14:26Larry Holmes.
00:14:27Fifteen rounds for the WBC World Heavyweight Championship.
00:14:37All right, the introductions of the gladiators
00:14:41by the ring announcer.
00:14:43This fight to be fought under WBC rules and scoring system,
00:14:47unlike Tillis-Page,
00:14:49which was fought under the Texas state rules.
00:14:52So, this fight will be scored by three judges,
00:14:55as the referee, no voice in the scoring.
00:14:58Ten-point must system of scoring.
00:15:01Three-knockdown rule waived.
00:15:03Mandatory eight-count, of course.
00:15:05No saving by the bell
00:15:07as you look at Larry Holmes
00:15:08eyeing the opponent in his familiar manner.
00:15:11And Cobb with a half-smile on his face.
00:15:14No saving by the bell,
00:15:16except at the end of the 15th round,
00:15:19scheduled for as a heavyweight championship fight.
00:15:23At the end of the 15th round,
00:15:25the bell of fight is over.
00:15:27We get ready for first-round action.
00:15:30Cobb, a hulk of a man,
00:15:33a football player,
00:15:34Abilene Christian,
00:15:36locked for the likes of Wilbert Montgomery
00:15:39of the Philadelphia Eagles,
00:15:41and Clint Longley, the quarterback,
00:15:43briefly with the Cowboys.
00:15:44Larry doing the expected,
00:15:57the quick, piston-like left jab.
00:16:04Stinging jab, you saw it there.
00:16:07And using the ring, steady movement.
00:16:09in a circular pattern in the beginning,
00:16:12he can move laterally,
00:16:14very swiftly and gracefully.
00:16:16Third man in the ring is Steve Croson,
00:16:37veteran referee from Dallas, Texas.
00:16:39He used to be aabilitationist, food and a huge problem,
00:16:44so,
00:16:45now,
00:16:45as he is an interception,
00:16:47we've got to match for him.
00:16:48And on his face
00:16:49he has a great place.
00:16:50And he is a good boy listening to us.
00:16:52He has a good boy doing something.
00:16:53He's a good boy.
00:16:56Come on!
00:16:57Thlessly!
00:16:58He's a good boy.
00:16:59My coach,
00:17:00you know,
00:17:01he's a good boy.
00:17:02You see Larry's a big,
00:17:03good boy.
00:17:03Now,
00:17:04I'm going to be a good boy.
00:17:04Come on!
00:17:04You see Larry's a good boy.
00:17:06He's a good boy.
00:17:06You see Larry's a big boy.
00:17:08You see, Larry's left dominating the first round.
00:17:15Right to Larry's midsection, but with no snap.
00:17:21In point of fact, Tex Cobb, despite his number of KOs, is an arm puncher.
00:17:27His not a lot of crispness or snap to his punches.
00:17:34No Larry covering.
00:17:36Cobb trying to work to the midsection.
00:17:42Three judges who will be doing the scoring.
00:17:46Spider Byron, as Larry Holmes doing pretty much what he wants.
00:17:53Spider Byron, correction, Chuck Hassett and Charlie Minker.
00:17:57Minker, a familiar name, from Las Vegas.
00:18:00Hassett from Los Angeles.
00:18:03And Bynum from Dallas.
00:18:05They'll do the scoring.
00:18:11The crowd got whipped up a little bit as Larry almost lost his footing.
00:18:18Naturally, they're partisan rooting for the young man from Texas who now lives in New Jersey.
00:18:23And trains and smoking Joe Frazier's gym.
00:18:30We're approaching, as you can see, the end of the first round.
00:18:35Back live in the Astrodome, round two about to begin.
00:18:44Quick reminder, Auburn against Alabama live tomorrow, 12 o'clock Eastern time.
00:18:49The Big Bear not about to retire as he leads the Crimson Tide into action.
00:18:54Plus, a special halftime report on blackhead football coaches.
00:18:59You know about Eddie Robinson.
00:19:01Grambling State University in Grambling, Louisiana.
00:19:05Now the fight.
00:19:06First round, Holmes did pretty much what he wanted.
00:19:11Stop doing what he said in our talk that he would do.
00:19:15He would keep pouring in.
00:19:16But he is not what you would call a class act as a fighter.
00:19:22No disrespect for the young man, a fine person.
00:19:26But we're talking professional and boxing jerks.
00:19:29I'll tell you this, you can hit Cobb from Natal Doomsday, as I mentioned during the presentation
00:19:56of the highlights of his boxing history, he reminds one of George Chavala.
00:20:01The late Rocky Marciano told me that if all fights were 50 or 100 rounds, Chavala would never be beaten.
00:20:09And one gets the same feeling about Tex Cobb.
00:20:13He's never been knocked off his feet.
00:20:19Holmes is a class act.
00:20:23He's a fighter who will fight purpose flights.
00:20:28He's not in a hurry to impress anybody.
00:20:31He doesn't feel he has to do that anymore in his career.
00:20:40That was a strong right following a left.
00:20:44Excellent combination.
00:20:46There's the left again.
00:20:47There goes, there goes.
00:20:48Cobb throwing leather, but not connecting.
00:21:06Not very often.
00:21:11Larry covers well, picks off punches beautifully.
00:21:14Second round is counting down, and you saw a right, and then a left, and still another.
00:21:26All in rapid combination.
00:21:29Notice Cobb missing.
00:21:33There's the left again.
00:21:35And the end of round two at hand.
00:21:40Live at ringside, the Houston Astrodome.
00:21:43Howard Cosell along with Don Chevrier.
00:21:46The first two rounds, Larry Holmes giving a boxing lesson to Randy Tex Cobb.
00:21:55Cobb with a bulldog determination, but so far, a little more than that.
00:22:00There are those who remember, however, the seventh round against Ronaldo Snipes,
00:22:06and they think, can it happen again?
00:22:09And the seventh round, the first time around, against Ernie Shavers.
00:22:14Of course, Shavers then a terrific puncher.
00:22:17So far, no sign of a cut on Cobb.
00:22:38Much publicized his tendency to cut.
00:22:41Now that we discussed with him in the interview.
00:22:53Maybe he taught something to Clint Longley about fighting.
00:22:57Remember Clint?
00:22:59Wanted to have it out with Roger Staubach, and Holmes scores heavily.
00:23:03More than halfway through the third round.
00:23:20Larry's movement constant.
00:23:24Measuring Cobb.
00:23:26Come on!
00:23:27Come on!
00:23:28Come on!
00:23:29Come on!
00:23:30Come on!
00:23:30Come on!
00:23:30Come on!
00:23:31Come on!
00:23:31Come on!
00:23:32Come on!
00:23:33He's following the left jab.
00:23:35Cobb keeps missing.
00:23:37There, a right got into the chest.
00:23:39But no snap on it.
00:23:47So far, the fight a reminder of Holmes against Scott Ledoux in Minneapolis.

00:24:29Live at the Astrodome, round four underway, Holmes thus far, a class professional against
00:24:45a club fighter in Randy Tex-Cobb.
00:24:48Holmes picking off attempted blow after blow by Cobb and then countering with rapid combinations,
00:24:57a left jab, maybe the dominant blow, but lately in combination, the right is gone.
00:25:04That time Cobb scored with a left.
00:25:13There's that jab.
00:25:17Beats him to the punch easily with it.
00:25:27That was the Holmes' right.
00:25:36Note how Cobb is always reaching, trying to get to Holmes.
00:25:41There's the left and right in combination again by Larry.
00:25:50Cobb scored well with a right, maybe his best blow of the fight.
00:25:57Go down, go down, go down.
00:26:08More than halfway through round four.
00:26:12There you go.
00:26:13There you go.
00:26:14There you go.
00:26:16Crowd yelled over the Cobb right, which missed.
00:26:20Larry slipped that punch with his head and promptly counted.
00:26:24Look at that.
00:26:24Do to his word, Holmes keeps coming.
00:26:45Oh, look at that.
00:26:49Two consecutive rights and a touch wobbly, the man who's never been floored.
00:26:56Cobb desperately trying to get to Holmes, but without the skills to do it.
00:27:03Note, Holmes continues to use the ring.
00:27:06And there is blood from the nose of Randy Texcobb.
00:27:13From the right nostril particularly.
00:27:16That way it hurts you because the blood goes into the mouth and affects the breathing.
00:27:21As we approach the end of the fourth round and Larry Holmes just gives a boxing lesson.
00:27:30Lesson.
00:27:31Round five, live at the Astrodome, established in the first four rounds, Cobb is a tree trunk of a man.
00:27:46He can take a punch.
00:27:48Nosebleed in the fourth round, the Holmes left jab getting in repeatedly, Cobb reaching like that.
00:27:57Unable to connect with any authority.
00:28:01Got in one right in the fourth round.
00:28:03In the fourth round, that was his best blow of the fight.
00:28:07What an arm puncher.
00:28:13There's that left beating Cobb to the punch again.
00:28:22The action, utterly redundant.
00:28:33Croud rod over a Cobb left.
00:28:37Yes, he's a native of Texas.
00:28:43Look at that combination.
00:28:46Holmes teeing off on Cobb.
00:28:49But the fella doesn't go down, does he?
00:28:58Cobb now trying to maul and brawl and get inside and some way get to Holmes.
00:29:02Had him backed into a corner, but not with real effectiveness.
00:29:08More than halfway through this round.
00:29:15Cobb steadily, the attempted aggressive.
00:29:19Larry counterpunching beautifully.
00:29:22But then there's the opponent to consider.
00:29:25Cobb's right eye beginning to swell.
00:29:38And the left again.
00:29:40Not a pretty thing to see.
00:29:41Especially with the ball that's cast over boxing.
00:29:47By the recent death of Duke Duke Kim.
00:29:51Other boxing deaths in the past.
00:29:54And the laissez-faire attitudes of the apologists for boxing.
00:29:58Cobb is a brave man.
00:29:59Cobb is a brave man.
00:30:04We will return for more of this ABC Sports exclusive after this from our local station.

00:30:16We will return for more of this ABC Sports exclusive after this from our local station.
00:30:32from our local stations.
00:30:43Round six, and Tex Cobb's left eye is half closed.
00:30:48The nosebleed in the fourth round
00:30:50was not reopened in the fifth.
00:30:53His head must have been carved out of Mount Rushmore,
00:30:56and he certainly has a granite chin.
00:30:59But is this a palatable match?
00:31:03You decide.
00:31:21Cobb misses again and again,
00:31:23and purposefully Holmes responds with quick combinations
00:31:28who has the will and the opportunity suit him.
00:31:32See that?
00:31:34Two pawing blows by Cobb that didn't connect.
00:31:36This crowd goes crazy if there's even an appearance of connecting.
00:31:40See that?
00:31:41Two pawing blows by Cobb that didn't connect.
00:31:45This crowd goes crazy if there's even an appearance of connecting.
00:31:51And so this round wears away more than halfway through
00:31:54in the manner of all of the prior ones.
00:31:58And so this round wears away more than halfway through
00:32:01in the manner of all of the prior ones.
00:32:06And so this round wears away more than halfway?
00:32:09and so this round wears away more than halfway though
00:32:13in the manner of all of the prior ones.
00:32:20Good guys, good.
00:32:27The crowd, as it appeared, that Cobb scored with a right, but count the lefts, thrown
00:32:47and landed by Holmes.
00:32:49Look at that right lead, that really caught Cobb, but the fella doesn't waver, does
00:33:04it?
00:33:17He was hurt there, for a moment it looked like he might go down, but he still hasn't.
00:33:26One worries about the degree of punishment.
00:33:36Drake, another look at that right lead by Holmes that set up his subsequent flurry of blows
00:33:44that made it look like Cobb might go down.
00:33:47Look at that, right up and over Cobb's left, and he grimaced as you can see.
00:33:53Don Chevrier, look at that eye.
00:33:56What's your view of this, Don?
00:33:58As you said, Howard, class on the part of Holmes, and courage on the part of Cobb.
00:34:02He's taken quite a beating in there, no match for him, but you mentioned George Chivalo,
00:34:06and the analogy is a fine one.
00:34:08Not since Chivalo, I've seen anybody take heavy punches like that and still stay in his
00:34:12feet.
00:34:13He's thrown everything with the kitchen sink at him.
00:34:15You wonder what Holmes will have to do to end it.
00:34:17Well, being a Canadian, you remember Irving Ungerman, Chivalo's manager.
00:34:21It was once said of Ungerman that Chivalo would fight as long as Ungerman could stand.
00:34:27That's about it.
00:34:28We are getting ready for round seven.
00:34:35There is the bell, live from the Houston Astrodome.
00:34:40Round seven, only an historical reminder.
00:34:57There is the seventh round when Shavers floored Holmes and when suddenly, unexpectedly,
00:35:03Ronaldo snipes.
00:35:05The sixth round before a littlecemia and the fifth round comes from the next to the
00:35:07best of the Houston Astrodome is attacking his wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife's wife.
00:35:24If you think you're looking at an instant replay of each round, you're right.
00:35:54Holmes has led up in this round to this extent.
00:36:18He has thrown far fewer punches and landed far less.
00:36:23But still there is that rapier-like left.
00:36:41Notice him measuring the opponent.
00:36:46And there, scoring heavily with a right as Cobb missed and left himself open.
00:36:52That's the left again.
00:36:57Imagine the number of combinations against this man's head, the punishment he's been taking.
00:37:13Steve Croson of Dallas is the referee.
00:37:20The end of the round coming up.
00:37:35Remember, it's been anything but.
00:37:42Cobb, heavy-legged, ponderous, but with a bravery about him.
00:38:03However, we are not in the age of the Roman Coliseum and the Lions.
00:38:10You can see Cobb's face.
00:38:26Now all swollen.
00:38:27That left eye.
00:38:28Can't see how there can be much of any vision left in that.
00:38:33Look at those two lifts doubled up.
00:38:40Ohm still moving.
00:38:41Ohm still moving.
00:38:47Ohm still moving.
00:38:54Ohm still moving.
00:39:08Ohm still moving.
00:39:34Cobb's head snapped back by that last left.
00:39:37Notice how Cobb's efforts are still reaching efforts, mainly pawing.
00:39:42First fight was a surprisingly good action fight.
00:39:59Utilis slightly outboxing Paige.
00:40:02Paige in desperate trouble in the second round as the round ended.
00:40:06Look at Holmes just keeps pouring it on.
00:40:11And then suddenly as has been Tillis' won't in the eighth round.
00:40:15Greg at 238 plus pounds caught Tillis and KO'd it.
00:40:21But it was a good fight.
00:40:22But it was a good fight.
00:40:24We are coming to the end of the eighth round.
00:40:27And by now you can replay the first, the second, the third.
00:40:31Take whichever one you want.
00:40:33All right, it's round nine.
00:40:42And one of Cobb's handlers was smiling in the corner.
00:40:45I don't know why.
00:40:46I don't know why.
00:40:47This is a strong, decent man, Randy Tex Cobb.
00:40:50And I hate to see anybody take this kind of punishment.
00:40:55I mentioned the Paul cast over boxing once again.
00:40:59My colleague Don Chevrier knows about that.
00:41:02We were together in Montreal.
00:41:04The night of Leonard against Duran.
00:41:06The first time when Gaetan Hart knocked out Cleveland Denny who died a number of days thereafter.
00:41:14And, Don, you can't measure the aftermath of a fight like this with this kind of punishment, can you?
00:41:22No, and you would think that boxing people would be a lot more concerned
00:41:26after the events of a couple of weeks ago as to what goes on in a fight such as this.
00:41:30Cobb is taking a tremendous beating.
00:41:39The crowd doesn't seem to understand.
00:41:42Cobb got in one right, they roared, and you saw Holmes answer with a punishing combination.
00:41:49Right to that head that has taken so many blows.
00:41:52And I think of a fighter of whom I'm deeply fond personally, Alexis Aguayo,
00:41:59who's taken so much punishment ever since his second fight against Escalera in Remini Hitler.
00:42:07And now he's talking about wanting to fight again.
00:42:11After the prior affair when he lay unconscious for three minutes.
00:42:14Round nine.
00:42:28Holmes won't change his pattern.
00:42:30He'll keep using that left as he just did, snapping the opponent's head.
00:42:35He'll take no chances.
00:42:38The championship means too much to him.
00:42:42And you can't blame him for that.
00:42:44He's not responsible for the officials here.
00:42:47But it seems to me somebody should think about the degree of punishment.
00:42:53Look at that.
00:42:54Holding his glove up to his right cheek.
00:43:00Space ball in.
00:43:02This is brutalization.
00:43:04It's a personal opinion, but I think the referee should think about stopping this fight and pass.
00:43:21I mean, this is not right.
00:43:22And no, he won't go down.
00:43:31Courage of a lion, but why?
00:43:34I don't understand the smile on the face of a handler over there.
00:43:50Look at that.
00:43:55His whole face puffed and swollen.
00:44:05Your comment done.
00:44:07I couldn't agree more, Howard.
00:44:09I think he's taken too many blows.
00:44:11And we might be getting into the danger zone.
00:44:14Fine young man, Randy Cobb.
00:44:15Nobody will question his courage, his stamina.
00:44:18He keeps on coming.
00:44:19He's been out of class.
00:44:20There's no sense letting him stay and hope he gets a lucky punch in.
00:44:23Because it isn't worth the price.
00:44:26You're absolutely right.
00:44:29I'm sure Holmes feels the same way.
00:44:32Why don't they stop it?
00:44:34Round 10.
00:44:49When Davey Barrow finally stopped the Ledoux fight, Ledoux claimed that he had Holmes.
00:45:08He was punching himself out, which was an utter absurdity.
00:45:12And quite clearly, Larry still full of movement.
00:45:19Still, as the ninth round ended, the punishment he inflicted was simply enormous.
00:45:25He's just picking his spots.
00:45:29Like that.
00:45:33The referee is Steve Croson of Dallas.
00:45:37I mention his name because he's got a big responsibility here.
00:45:50The crowd roars.
00:45:52And the crowd roars.
00:45:59The crowd roars.
00:46:05And the crowd roars.
00:46:12The crowd!
00:46:15It's on the right side near the corner,
00:46:17it's on the right side of Seattle.
00:46:21This is just terrible.
00:46:42Listen to that, a couple of pouring blows and the fans cheer
00:46:48like it's affecting Larry Holmes at all,
00:46:52like there's any comparability of effectiveness of punches.
00:46:59Yes, Randy got in a left, so look at Holmes.
00:47:02Larry using his right more and more in these middle rounds.
00:47:23See those two cobblows, both missed.
00:47:38Round 11, and it goes on and on.
00:47:42The referee, Steve Crossley.
00:47:44Round 11, and it goes on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on
00:48:14Look at that, Ed snapped back from the home's left.
00:48:44Again and again.
00:48:50Keep it down, keep it down now.
00:48:54Go, keep it down now.
00:48:58That's it.
00:49:04Hands up.
00:49:08Hands up.
00:49:16Hands up.
00:49:18Hands up.
00:49:24Hands up.
00:49:34A new experience going into the 11th round.
00:49:40It has to be a better experience and Lord knows maybe this man could stand up and take this
00:49:56for 50 rounds.
00:49:58What does that prove?
00:50:00Who knows what the after effects will be?
00:50:04Don't forget tomorrow, 12 noon Eastern time, the Big Bear and the Crimson Tide against troublesome
00:50:32Auburn.
00:50:37What goes on and Cobb's caught.
00:50:39Just like you did that round.
00:50:41Keep that jam going.
00:50:42Keep that jam going.
00:50:43Keep that jam going.
00:50:44Keep that jam going.
00:50:45Keep that jam going.
00:50:46Keep that jam going.
00:50:47Just like you would.
00:50:48Keep that jam going.
00:50:49Keep that jam going.
00:50:50Keep that jam going.
00:50:51Just like you would.
00:50:52Keep that jam going.
00:50:53Keep that jam going.
00:50:54Just like you would do it.
00:50:55You understand?
00:50:56Keep him going back.
00:50:57Do you understand?
00:50:58When he fires, go high-handed.
00:50:59Now that jam is going up and down.
00:51:00Up and down.
00:51:01It's nice.
00:51:02Try to fire you right there a little faster.
00:51:03Right?
00:51:04But now keep the jam going.
00:51:05Right?
00:51:06But now keep the jam going.
00:51:07Right?
00:51:08Okay.
00:51:09Now the jab is working good for you.
00:51:10Keep it on top.
00:51:11Right?
00:51:12Now keep it going.
00:51:13Right?
00:51:14Well, I'm kind of sorry we listened to that Gordon.
00:51:17Keep the jam going.
00:51:19There's one person in this fight's got a jab going again and again and again in every round
00:51:24and it's like a recurring piston.
00:51:26And that's Holmes' jab.
00:51:28Poor Randy has just been pawing.
00:51:37Holmes picks off almost every attempt with his own gloves.
00:51:42Otherwise the blows are short as Cobb reaches as you see there.
00:51:47Nothing more to say.
00:51:56jgm
00:51:58Lost
00:52:04Jg
00:52:07Fig

00:52:16W
00:52:20What's
00:52:22H
00:52:23チ
00:52:26Well, something has to be repaired on Holmes' glove or tape.
00:52:32Eddie Futch runs up and proceeds to put tape on the glove.
00:52:38And there is Tex Cobb.
00:52:47The glove repaired.
00:52:50And we resume action.
00:52:56And there go the lefts again, and then the right in combination, then another left.
00:53:10And the crowd was roaring earlier in the round before the glove repair.
00:53:16Cobb was rolling and rolling.
00:53:18Look at this.
00:53:19Holmes teeing off again.
00:53:26Oh, look at this.
00:53:37James!
00:53:39Arthur!
00:53:40Me too.
00:53:42James!
00:53:45Alice!
00:53:48You're not internet!
00:53:49There you do!
00:53:52There you do!
00:53:54Ah!
00:53:55Oh
00:54:25This kind of savagery doesn't deserve commentation.
00:54:55I'll tell you something, my friend Don Chevrier, this is as brutal a mismatch as I think I've ever seen.
00:55:13Exactly. So one-sided and I can't help but thinking we'll be seeing it tomorrow at the U.S. and Cuba in amateur boxing.
00:55:19Some of the safeguards that go into that. One rule I like very much, Howard, is the standing eight count.
00:55:25This fight would have been over about ten rounds ago on the basis of three standing eight counts in one round under amateur rule.
00:55:31It does safeguard the fighters. It's nonexistent here at the pro ranks. Maybe they should think about it.
00:55:35I have, well, that's a good point. Also, optional headgear.
00:55:40Well, I've been through it. I've testified before the Congress any number of times.
00:55:50And a student referees is supposed to take charge.
00:55:52Exactly. This fellow is from Dallas, Texas. Steve Crosson, the referee.
00:55:57And I don't understand his judgment or thinking.
00:56:00This is round 13.
00:56:29This is round 13.
00:56:59What is achieved by letting this man take this kind of beating for 15 rounds?
00:57:11Randy Texcock.
00:57:13Holmes just pushes him off. Hits him with the left. Look at that right, left, left, right.
00:57:40Oh, great, right.
00:57:52Oh, God.
00:57:54Oh, crap.
00:57:55Oh, crap.
00:57:56Oh, crap.
00:57:57Oh, crap.
00:57:59Oh, crap.
00:58:00Oh, crap.
00:58:02Oh, crap.
00:58:04Oh, crap.
00:58:05Oh, crap.
00:58:06Boy, this, you can't.
00:58:06From the point of view of boxing, which is under fire, and deservedly so,
00:58:34this fight could not have come at a worse time.
00:58:52Round 14.
00:59:04Round 14.
00:59:14Round 14.
00:59:19Round 15.
00:59:23Round 15.
00:59:30This is all self-explanatory.
01:00:00That was Blaine again.
01:00:25One feels almost a concussion from the mere thud of Holmes' left on Cobb's head.
01:00:54Obviously, this referee has no intention of stopping this fight.
01:01:20The blood all over Cobb's face now.
01:01:35I wonder if that referee understands that he is constructing an advertisement for the abolition of the very sport that he's a part of.
01:01:44The 15th and final round.
01:01:56Thank heaven.
01:02:03Holmes has got to be arm-weary.
01:02:12Nothing else.
01:02:35As the prior round ended, Holmes padded Cobb.
01:02:43And he certainly doesn't want to inflict further punishment on him.
01:02:59You mentioned that previous round, Howard.
01:03:01Cobb turned three ways to finally discover where his corner was.
01:03:04Do you think he's not hurt?
01:03:06Of course he is.
01:03:29Lowry just let him miss and then started in with the right.
01:03:38He's on his way to winning his 15th consecutive round.
01:03:53Trevor Burbick went 15th with Holmes but didn't take anything resembling this kind of punishment.
01:04:00Look at how swollen the poor man's face is.
01:04:28Hurry up, Clark.
01:04:3090 seconds down.
01:04:31Another example right there.
01:04:44The referee totally out of the court.
01:04:46I can't believe this referee.
01:04:49It's outrageous.
01:04:51All right, it's finally over.
01:05:19Wasn't worthy of commentary in those last five rounds, which is why poor man is still smiling and look how battered and beaten he is.
01:05:44What is achieved by such as this?
01:06:00Larry's not proud.
01:06:02He's a fine, decent man.
01:06:09He can't be happy about this.

01:06:50That's a shutout.
01:06:51The winner by unanimous decision and still undefeated world heavyweight champion, Larry Holmes.
01:07:00I called it a shutout.
01:07:02So did Don Chevrier.
01:07:04Once again, the winner, unanimously, a classic mismatch, Larry Holmes.
