00:00I've spoken to them. I know they're here. Rocky Blyer, number 20 of the Pittsburgh Steelers,
00:06and Rod Carew, the six-time American League batting champion.
00:10His fifth title defense today against a man from Italy.
00:15A man whose name is, as Holmes works out in his dressing room, Lorenzo Zanone.
00:21And there he is, unbeaten in his last six fights, the number five WBC heavyweight contender,
00:28the former European heavyweight champ.
00:31He is 29 years of age, with a record of 25-4-2, with nine K-ups.
00:38Live in Las Vegas, Nevada, at ringside, awaiting the start of the fifth title defense by Larry Holmes,
00:45the opponent, Lorenzo Zanone.
00:48Live, ringside, Las Vegas, Nevada, that's Lorenzo Zanone.
00:54He weighed in at 215 pounds.
00:56Larry Holmes, in the ring.
01:00Larry Holmes, who is still hurt and sensitive over the fact that he doesn't feel he's gotten enough public recognition
01:08as a good, solid heavyweight champion of the world.
01:13Lorenzo Zanone, last time I saw him fight in this arena, I call that fight, it was against Jerry Quarry.
01:20He, for nine rounds, Zanone, outboxed Quarry all over the ring.
01:25In the tenth round, he went out.
01:28He went out from a series of punches that were more invisible than the anchor punch of Ali in Lewiston, Maine,
01:37on May 25th, 1965.
01:40He did win the European crown, beating Evangelista in what amounted to a sleepwalking contest,
01:48but then forfeited that crown when he didn't seek to defend it in accordance with boxing authority dictates.
01:56Instead, he took this fight against Larry Holmes.
01:58He weighs 213 and one-half pounds.
02:01He is the Eastern Assassin, Larry Holmes.
02:07The Eastern Assassin has a new Cone Frere in his corner wearing a cowboy hat.
02:13You'll remember him, Fred, the Hammer, Williamson.
02:17The old Kansas City defensive back-turned movie act.
02:22In the meantime, it's the two fighters.
02:25There is the Hammer.
02:27The late Vince Lombardi told you what happened to the Hammer
02:32when Green Bay beat Kansas City in the first Super Bowl game ever.
02:38That's football.
02:39Right now, we're getting ready for this contest.
02:41Quickly, the officials.
02:43The referee from Mexico City is Ray Solis.
02:47And the judges who will be doing the scoring,
02:49Art Lurie, Charles Minker, and Harold Buck, all Nevada officials.
02:53First-round action underway.
02:5420-foot ring, 10-point must scoring system.
02:57Three-knockdown rule wave.
02:59No saving by the bell.
03:01Zipped across the 15th round.
03:03The fight would be ended.
03:09Holmes always using that quick shock left jab.
03:15But Zanone himself, the possessor of a left jab,
03:18though he often jabs while retreating,
03:21and you can't score damage that way.
03:23Stone fought a draw
03:27with another Italian heavyweight,
03:31Alfio Rigetti.
03:34Give you an idea of that.
03:36Rigetti was just recently knocked out in the first round
03:40by an American club fighter, Tementary Mims.

07:03I want to remind you again because of what you may have read in print
07:18that Zanon is not the European champion
07:37mistakenly that may have appeared in certain advertisements in print
07:41he did win the European championship against Evangelista
07:45but then boxing international authorities
07:49rump organizations though they are
07:51took it away from him
07:53when he elected to fight Holmes instead of an opponent they had designated

09:07Zanon is getting that jab in there
09:14the start of the round I thought Holmes was going to take a different test
09:21take some of that left get in there and try and score a knockout quickly
09:28looked like he was ready to try that tactic but
09:43back in the pattern of the first two rounds except that Zanon is getting his left in
09:50more than he had in the prior two rounds
09:57minute and a half to go this round and I'd like to alert our local stations along the line at the end of this round we'll take a station break

12:58zoom. Three knockdown rule is waived. Title fight. If Sunone tries to mix it up with Holmes,
13:06the departure will be immediate.
13:19Well, let's see if Larry lets Sunone get off the hook.
13:2850 into the round. It's fourth round action. Two knockdowns in the round. There's the rights.
13:38Sunone's ready to go.
13:46Calling that a knockdown because Nevada had eliminated the standing eight count rule.
13:54Right there, a violation of Nevada's own rule by Fern Hernandez, the referee.
14:01Or rather, Ray Solis, the referee from Mexico City.
14:08Well, there have been two knockdowns in a standing eight count.
14:16And the round is almost ready to close out.
14:25The end of the round.
14:42We'll stay with the fighters.
14:46Sunone, three times. Two on the canvas, one standing.
14:53And there is, or was, Sunone. Here is Holmes.
14:58Let's take a look at the knockdown.
15:02One of them.
15:05First one.
15:06There's the right.
15:08Quick sharp right.
15:09Bang.
15:09It did follow a left.
15:11It was not a right lead.
15:12Just like it did when we said to go back out.
15:15Settle down.
15:16Settle down.
15:17Same pattern.
15:19Listen to Rich Giacchetti.
15:20Settle down.
15:21Same pattern.
15:22No problem.
15:23Nice bucket.
15:25Over the big, puffy area.
15:27Under Sunone's left eye.
15:29Space.
15:34Then set him up for the right hook.
15:36Okay?
15:36Right.
15:37Let's go.
15:37Let's do it.
15:38Set him up for the right hook.
15:40Richie, you mean right cross.
15:45All right.
15:46Fifth round action.
15:48Left and there.
16:02That sets up the right.
16:04It should.
16:07Second.
16:08Let him do a potty, bitch!
16:16Let him do a potty, bitch!
16:20Let him do a potty!
16:24Let him do a potty!
16:28Right by Zeno.
16:30Lots of noise from the crowd.
16:34From the past, you've seen Larry use the ring.
16:37This is a 20-foot ring, dancing around, peppering with the left.
16:41He hasn't done that in this fight, as Zeno got his left into Holmes' face.
16:50In 10 seconds into the round, Holmes looking to use the right.
17:02Zeno flicking the left jab, the trouble, Larry, the first three rounds.
17:06Zeno getting up.
17:0920 minutes 30 on the round.
17:21So far it's a good round for Zeno.
17:23So far, it's a good round for Zanon.
17:33Maybe his best after the three counts against him in the fourth round.
17:40A minute left to go in round five.
17:53I saw Zanon connect there.
18:12It's a very good round for Zanon.
18:16And the most unimpressive follow-up by Holmes.
18:22To a round where he had Zanon ready to go.
18:26Not once, but twice and couldn't finish him off.
18:39End of the round, Zanon.
18:46Round six, live from Las Vegas.
18:49Yes, it's gone five rounds already.
18:52There were two knockdowns by Holmes and Lincoln.
18:55There's the right.
18:56Immediately, Zanon gets hit with the right.
18:59He's in trouble.
19:01Two knockdowns in the fourth and a standard eight count in the fourth.
19:06Holmes has not been impressive.
19:15He has shown virtually no movement.
19:17Zanon has worked his jab effectively against Lowry.
19:21One would have looked for lateral movement from Holmes.
19:25Staying away from that jab and then pummeling Zanon with the right.
19:29But he hasn't done it.
19:30Now he's trying to put him away by walking in, taking a little punishment and banging Zanon.
19:39Goes down rather easily.
19:40Sixth round.
19:42Three quick left jobs by Zanon.
19:43One answering, one by Holmes.
19:44Three quick left jobs by Zanon.
19:49Three quick left jobs by Zanon.
19:50One answering, one by Holmes.
19:51Three quick left jobs by Zanon.
19:52Three quick left jobs by Zanon.
19:53One answering, one by Holmes.
19:55Zeed!
19:56One forward.
20:00Three quick left jobs by Zanon.
20:07One answering, one by Holmes.
20:10And he found this for the scum.
20:16Here he has a beginner.
20:17Good então!
20:18Put this in the rehabilitator!
20:21You can see for yourselves that Holmes is not fighting a good fight tactically.
20:51Right there, Lowry almost desperately trying to put him away.
20:55Not fighting with the skill that one would expect from a heavyweight champion.
21:05There he goes from the right again.
21:08How quickly.
21:13This should go in.
21:14He looked at his corner in perfect candor.
21:21It didn't appear that he wanted it to go off.
21:25Sounds harsh, I know, but you saw him look at his corner.
21:28And so it's over in the sixth round.
21:32An inglorious fight from all angles.
21:35Sugar Ray Leonard shaking his head in disbelief as he walked away.
21:44Larry Holmes still the champion.
21:48But he's got some work ahead of him.
21:50Because he did not look impressive in this fight at all.
21:54Ladies and gentlemen.
21:55That's the announcement.
21:56The time.
21:58Two minutes, 39 seconds of the sixth round.
22:02Now watch.
22:03The left and then the right.
22:06Always it was the right.
22:10Two minutes, 39 seconds of round six.
22:14Holmes is still the champion.
22:15And we'll be back to talk with Larry.
22:18And I really want to talk with him quite candidly in just a moment.
22:23Here live in Las Vegas.
22:25You're looking at Larry Holmes as he makes his way along the ring apron.
22:29On to the steps and down to talk with us.
22:33And even as he approaches this, let's look at the final knockout punch again.
22:39There was a left, a long left jab that got in there.
22:43And then the right.
22:45And Zanon was down for the third time in the fight.
22:50There had been, in violation of Nevada's own rules, which I've rechecked with the ringside officials,
22:56a standing eight count, erroneously called by Ray Solis, the Mexico City referee.
23:03All right.
23:09Here we are.
23:10There's the camera, Larry.
23:12Question number one.
23:14In the round when you floored him twice in the fourth round,
23:19the standing eight count was counted.
23:21Did that stop you, do you feel, from knocking him out then?
23:24Yes, Howard, I do, because we all know standing eight count is for images.
23:28We're professionals.
23:29I think we should act as independent or as professionals.
23:32If it was me going down, I wouldn't want a standing eight count.
23:35Let the guy do what he got to do and let the day be short as possible.
23:39So then quite clearly your position is you would have knocked him out in the fourth.
23:43I felt so, Howard, because I was ready to go.
23:45I was warmed up, and I felt that I could have taken him out.
23:51All right.
23:51Now, you know I like you.
23:53You know I respect you very much.
23:55I didn't think, I thought you were sluggish out there today.
23:58I didn't think you were really into this fight the way I'd expected you would be.
24:04Did you have any of that feeling within yourself?
24:06No, I felt good going in.
24:08I felt good boxing.
24:09The only thing I found out in the ring, the guy was very awkward, and he was kind of hard to get to.
24:16He was coming out with funny punches, funny hooks, and whatnot, and that made him real awkward.
24:19That's why it took me as long as it did to catch up with him.
24:22But he's a good fighter, and I see why he's the champion of Europe now, because he's very awkward.
24:27He got a funny left jab, and he throws a funny right hand.
24:31So this is what made it a little harder for me to get to him.
24:34Your next fight, then, will be against Leroy Jones.
24:37Yeah, I want Leroy. I want to fight Leroy on my way to fighting John Tay.
24:42I'm the fighting champion. I'm going to be a people champion.
24:44I'm going to give all fighters the opportunity to fight for the heavyweight championship.
24:47This is what all people suspect me to do.
24:49I'd like to say something.
24:51I'd like to say hi to my Reverend Jacobs and Roy Jacobs and Dave Jacobs, who's their trainer.
24:57And I'd like to say hi to my kids and my wife and my mother and everybody, and say hi to them back home in Easton.
25:04All right. I have one final question to ask you.
25:07You showed little of your own movement against a gnome. Why?
25:11Well, that's because he was so awkward, and I wanted to confuse him.
25:14I want him to come to me.
25:15If I start dancing, he might come to me, but he didn't care about that.
25:20He's a veteran fighter.
25:21He knows what he is.
25:22He's been in there with the best, so he knew what to suspect.
25:25Okay. Congratulations.
25:27My J.C. award, all the members of the J.C.
25:29Hey, your man, Larry Holmes, is right here with Howard Cosell.
25:33Okay. Congratulations.
25:35Thank you, Howard.
25:35So that's the story here.
25:37And Larry told you that he's the European champion.
25:40We have told you the truth about that.
25:44He is not presently.
25:46Michael Dynamite Dokes.
25:48And today he goes against the 28-year-old Lucien Rodriguez in a scheduled 10-rounder.
25:55The boxing, and here in Miami Beach, it'll be undefeated Michael Dokes
25:58going against the French heavyweight champion Lucien Rodriguez.
26:02Hi, everybody. I'm Marv Alvin, along with the one-time heavyweight champ, Ken Norton.
26:06And Ken Dokes comes off a one-round knockout in Las Vegas last month over Earl Tripp.
26:12And he claims he's trying to become more of a puncher rather than a boxer.
26:16That's true. He's gaining weight here.
26:18He weighs about 217.
26:20And what he's trying to do is incorporate the punching power into the boxing skills that he has.
26:26And he feels very awesome at 217.
