00:00:00Ali in just a moment. Right now, these words...
00:00:03The WBC World Heavyweight Championship, Larry Holmes versus Muhammad Ali, is brought to you by Pontiac.
00:00:11As quickly as possible, we're going to turn our attention to the fight held October 2nd pass between Larry Holmes
00:00:17and Muhammad Ali.
00:00:18Both fighters are here. We'll be talking with me after you view the contest, as I called that contest that
00:00:24night.
00:00:25But to give you some of the pre-fight flavor, I spoke before the fight with both fighters.
00:00:30Larry alleged that Muhammad was using a hypnotist. Muhammad denied it.
00:00:35And thus, we pick up at that point in the conversation with me talking first to Larry Holmes.
00:00:44And you're convinced that despite his denials, he is seeing a hypnotist?
00:00:49I think so, Howard. I think so. He lost a great deal of weight.
00:00:55I don't feel that he lost this amount of weight because he's been training so hard.
00:00:58I think it's because he hasn't been eating.
00:01:00I think I got him so that he can't eat.
00:01:03He will be weak on the night of the fight.
00:01:05I will go to him. I will make this man fight every second, every round.
00:01:09And I don't think he can go eight rounds.
00:01:11That's why I'm predicting that I will knock Ali out.
00:01:14I will stop him somewhere from one to eight rounds.
00:01:18A few quick questions that we have to consider before this fight.
00:01:24How is it possible, you haven't fought for more than two years,
00:01:28to have your reflexes and your skills the way once they were?
00:01:33Charles Carter, my sparring partner, 22 years old, 160 pounds, same height, Holmes.
00:01:39I'm faster.
00:01:41Jeff Studdema, top of the notch man, 22 years old, 6'2", I'm faster.
00:01:47Marty Monroe, world ain't very heavyweight, 24 years old and faster.
00:01:51You watch, that's why I say, you see a miracle.
00:01:53I've had two years of rest, two years off, two years off, take what you say, and I'm going to
00:01:58whoop home.
00:01:59But I can understand your resolve, but what about your resiliency?
00:02:04Your muscle tone, losing all that weight.
00:02:07Muscle tone, perfect.
00:02:08Haven't you lost some strength?
00:02:09No, I'm not.
00:02:11If I did in two months, Howard, I've been working six months.
00:02:14I did this gradually.
00:02:16I've done today 15,640 calisthenics.
00:02:20Oh, man, I'm ready.
00:02:21I wouldn't come back and go out and lose it.
00:02:23Isn't this difficult for you?
00:02:25Many times you've expressed your respect for the man, even admiration, once he was your idol.
00:02:31How can you hate him now?
00:02:33No, Howard, I don't hate him.
00:02:34I feel that I cannot hate anyone, but I feel that I have to get my jest due.
00:02:39I have to get the monkey off my back.
00:02:40This shadow has been following me around for many years.
00:02:43I haven't really got my jest due.
00:02:44Everywhere I go, people say, Ali, what about Ali?
00:02:48What about Ali?
00:02:48What about Ali?
00:02:49I have to knock this man out for the people to say, well, he knocked the man out, but they're
00:02:54going to say he was old.
00:02:55So what?
00:02:56I'd rather them say he was old than say I was nothing.
00:02:59Isn't that saying to me, in a diffused kind of way, that you can't get the recognition you think you
00:03:06deserve, even if you win?
00:03:09Right, Howard.
00:03:09I don't feel that I'll ever get the recognition I deserve.
00:03:12Even if I win, if I break all kinds of records or whatever, I feel that the monkey's always going
00:03:17to be on my back.
00:03:18But we don't care about that.
00:03:19As long as we're happy and we'll be able to live with ourself, I think we'll be happy with that.
00:03:23And I'm happy with myself now.
00:03:25I'm married.
00:03:26I got my kids.
00:03:27And that's all that matters to me.
00:03:28His behind shall be mine by round nine.
00:03:31Did you hear me?
00:03:32By round nine, it'll be all over.
00:03:35Play this at home.
00:03:36Just in case you think I can't do it, use this tape.
00:03:40I will destroy our homes.
00:03:42And I want you to play this thing over to the public and make me like a fool.
00:03:46His behind shall be mine at nine.
00:03:47I cannot lose the homes.
00:03:49I cannot lose the homes.
00:03:50Now play it the next day.
00:03:53There he is, the returning hero.
00:04:00The man who hasn't had a good fight for the last five years, not since Manila.
00:04:06The man who hasn't even fought since September 15, 1978.
00:04:11He is 38 years of age now.
00:04:14And he must undertake the task of reproving himself all over again.
00:04:19The man who has held the title an unprecedented three times and seeks to make it a fourth.
00:04:25Incredible.
00:04:26He has taken off more than 50 pounds in the last six months.
00:04:31How much strength can he have left?
00:04:34What will his tactics be?
00:04:35What will his weapon be?
00:04:37Nobody really knows.
00:04:39He has been obsessed with the desire to establish that Larry Holmes is afraid of him.
00:04:45As Holmes has been obsessed with the desire to establish that Ali is afraid of him.
00:04:51He is only 217 and a half, the lowest weight he's been since Kinshasa Zahir, when he weighed 216 and
00:05:00a half and rope-a-doped Foreman into extinction.
00:05:06Muhammad Ali, now in the ring, awaiting the arrival of Larry Holmes.
00:05:12Larry Holmes, the man who thirsts for recognition.
00:05:16Who has pointedly said, even if I win, even if I knock him out, they'll say I knocked out an
00:05:23old man.
00:05:24Larry Holmes, who has used an old tactic, a one-time Ali tactic, at one point in Muhammad's career, he
00:05:32kept Muhammad waiting in the ring.
00:05:35Let him sweat some more.
00:05:37Let him think some more.
00:05:38Maybe worry some more.
00:05:40But here comes Larry Holmes, the WBC heavyweight champion, a man who deserves recognition as a solid fighter, the possessor
00:05:51of a fine left jab, and a good enough right, unbeaten in 35 bouts, 26 KOs.
00:05:592'11 and a half, his weight, his height, 6'4", his reach, 79 inches, 3 inches less than Ali's,
00:06:08who is 6 feet 3 inches tall.
00:06:11So Larry Holmes, on this day, can spring from anonymity.
00:06:17And yet, oddly, the whole atmosphere in Las Vegas has been one of people coming from all over the country,
00:06:28hoping that somehow Muhammad Ali, as you look at Larry Holmes, can draw upon some inexhaustible resource.
00:06:38There he is.
00:06:39He is scaled down so he looks positively thin, at least in the face.
00:06:44There is the championship belt, which Holmes now owns.
00:06:49There's been a lot of talk about Ali using a hypnotist named Jimmy Gripper.
00:06:55Ali Pupuza.
00:06:57There is Ali, much the way he looked in Kinshasa.
00:07:01Saw air as they screamed, Ali Pumae, Ali Pumae.
00:07:09He is back in the ring, whether he comes back as Muhammad Ali.
00:07:14Or merely a vague shell, a replica of what, once he was, remains to be seen.
00:07:21That's the uncertainty in this belt.
00:07:25Talking to Larry Holmes now.
00:07:28As they are putting on Larry's gloves, the familiar figure of yesteryear, Drew Brown Bundini,
00:07:35will be back with the start of the WBC.
00:07:40Ali still trying to psych Larry Holmes, posturing, making faces at him, holding up four fingers and five fingers.
00:07:49He has said Holmes will be his within nine.
00:07:52Holmes being taunted by the familiar figure of the past, Drew Brown Bundini.
00:07:57Holmes has said he will go right at Ali.
00:08:00Ali has said, I only hope so.
00:08:02I only hope so.
00:08:04Fight will be scored on the ten-point must system.
00:08:08Three knockdown rule waived.
00:08:09Mandatory eight count.
00:08:11No standing eight counts.
00:08:12Once they had that in Nevada, no saving by the bell, except in the final round.
00:08:18The referee does not score.
00:08:20The referee is a man named Richard Green.
00:08:22He is a veteran referee.
00:08:24My last worked a fight of his here in Las Vegas when Wilfredo Gomez had to go ten rounds against
00:08:32the veteran Carlos Mendoza.
00:08:34Look at Ali.
00:08:36And Larry Holmes.
00:08:39I respect Larry Holmes.
00:08:41I respect him as a fighter.
00:08:43I respect him as a man.
00:08:44As for Ali, his lifetime speaks for itself.
00:08:51During the turbulence of the 60s, the young people adopted him as an anti-hero.
00:08:56In the 70s, he actually became an establishment hero.
00:09:01And he has proved himself transcendental to the sport of which he has been a part.
00:09:08A figure in constitutional law history.
00:09:11We are about ready to go.
00:09:16This is the main event of the evening.
00:09:21Fifteen rounds of boxing for the WBC Heavyweight Championship of the World.
00:09:28Introducing in the blue corner, the challenger.
00:09:33The three-time heavyweight champion of the world.
00:09:37Fighting out of Louisville, Kentucky.
00:09:39Weighing 217 and one-half pounds.
00:09:44Introducing Mohamed Ali.
00:09:50Crowd stands as one for Mohamed Ali.
00:09:54Angelo Dundee.
00:09:56Another familiar figure.
00:09:58In Ali's corner.
00:10:00In the red corner.
00:10:01Yes, Holmes.
00:10:02Fighting out of eastern Pennsylvania.
00:10:05He is going for a record.
00:10:07Eight straight KO in the heavyweight title defense.
00:10:11He weighs 211 and one-half pounds.
00:10:15He is the WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World.
00:10:19Larry, the eastern assassin.
00:10:22Hold.
00:10:23Fifteen rounds of boxing.
00:10:29Allin.
00:10:33Gentlemen, are we around here?
00:10:35You lost your coal already?
00:10:36Come on.
00:10:37You lost your coal already?
00:10:38He got it in your battle now.
00:10:39Look at me, Dickich.
00:10:40Come on, come on.
00:10:41Wait, wait, wait.
00:10:42He got enough briefs going to swim to the channel.
00:10:44We stopped.
00:10:45No, you can't wait, boss.
00:10:46He's not out of waiting.
00:10:47You texted.
00:10:48You wife, you wife.
00:10:49I mean, I'm waiting.
00:10:50Wait.,
00:10:51boy. I
00:10:52don't want to be picked yet. Good.
00:10:54Good. Come on. Come on. Come on. Be cool. Be cool. Be cool. Be cool.
00:11:05Okay. Hey, shut up. Shut up. Shut up. Shut up. Quiet. Shut up. Quiet.
00:11:14Quiet. Go ahead. I gave you guys an instruction. Do you have any questions?
00:11:23No. Do you have any questions? No questions. You're at the fight. Okay. You're right.
00:11:28Wait. Do you have any questions over there? No. Okay. Well, let's go. Let's go. Okay. Back to your corner.
00:11:37All right. That scene spoke for itself. Ali trying the psychomes to the very advent of the bout itself.
00:11:46How much he's succeeded, how much it will be forgotten once the action starts remains to be seen.
00:11:54Rich Giacchetti, the manager of homes, in the corner.
00:12:01It's a 20-foot ring. Big ring. Favors a boxer who can move.
00:12:08Once, Ali was unsurpassed in that regard. Ali carrying on with the referee, Richard Green.
00:12:22Green having trouble getting the fight started. The bell for round one.
00:12:27Wide-eyed, posturing Ali.
00:12:34Holmes, purposeful.
00:12:42Holmes really would like to make mincemeat of him early, if he can.
00:12:4825 seconds into round one.
00:12:56Ali retains one splendid weapon.
00:13:00Always his best weapon.
00:13:02The straight right. You see him covering there.
00:13:05Peek-a-boo fashion.
00:13:07If Larry gets lazy with his left jab, which he's been known to do, he can become Ali's accomplice.
00:13:17Larry is not the wise ringmaster that Ali used to be.
00:13:23And a straight right could jar Holmes.
00:13:28That's what Ali has to hope for.
00:13:31Holmes does not intend to let the left jab get lazy tonight.
00:13:40First round action.
00:13:42A minute, 20 seconds.
00:13:44Remember this about Ali, there has never, not ever, been a man who can take a punch better than Ali.
00:13:54Holmes will work down to that midriff, trusting that the loss of flesh has left flab in there.
00:14:12Now remember, we are fighting in what has been an oppressive heat.
00:14:17That may be a major factor.
00:14:19It was 100 degrees today.
00:14:21It may be close to that under these lights tonight.
00:14:25We are into the final minute of round one.
00:14:31Ali.
00:14:3256 victories, 3 defeats, 37 KOs.
00:14:4635 seconds left in the round.
00:14:49Round one.
00:14:53Ali.
00:14:55You saw a motion of Holmes to come on.
00:14:59Ali will seek to use his upper body to maul and brawl Holmes the way he did Leon Spinks.
00:15:06But Holmes is a far better fighter than Leon Spinks.
00:15:13Holmes' task is not to lose his head, not to be outsmarted.
00:15:17We're approaching the end of round one.
00:15:26The bell for round two.
00:15:29Ali to the left, Holmes to the right.
00:15:33Holmes quickly using that swift left jab.
00:15:37It is not a weak jab.
00:15:39It is a jarring jab, stinging.
00:15:41And notice how frequently he will seek to go to the midsection,
00:15:46testing what he feels must be flab left by the tremendous weight loss.
00:15:53The third man in the ring is Richard Green.
00:16:01Ali has said he doesn't want to go out the way Joe Lewis did and others have.
00:16:10Jim Jeffries tried to come back after being away for years against Jack Johnson.
00:16:15He was demolished.
00:16:16He was demolished.
00:16:22Good right to the belly by Holmes.
00:16:26A minute into the round.
00:16:29The left jab, sticking by Holmes.
00:16:34Ali posturing and talking.
00:16:38But not punching.
00:16:39Not at the moment.
00:16:42The crowd chants.
00:16:44You hear them.
00:16:45Ali.
00:16:53A minute and a half into the round.
00:17:02Ali looking, looking, waiting to get the right in.
00:17:05Larry's hand, left hand, down.
00:17:08Perhaps a touch too far.
00:17:11Watch that.
00:17:12Larry Holmes left hand.
00:17:14Now he got it back up to throw it.
00:17:16Doubled and tripled on it.
00:17:18Scored only twice.
00:17:29Into the final minute of round two.
00:17:37So far, Ali doing little, if any.
00:17:5430 seconds left in round two.
00:18:03Holmes being careful.
00:18:05An occasional flurry like that.
00:18:08Test out, Ali.
00:18:17Final seconds of round two.
00:18:22Holmes this round.
00:18:28We're about ready for round three.
00:18:30There's the bell.
00:18:31At ringside, it is 86 degrees in the ring under the lights.
00:18:35A lot more than that.
00:18:37With Ali, you must constantly look for strategy.
00:18:41Trying to outsmart the opponent.
00:18:43Beat him with the mind.
00:18:44And then ultimately with the fists.
00:18:46So, you wonder, is he figuring that the heat, together with Holmes' frequency of jabs, will wear down Larry and
00:18:56then give him, Ali, the opportunity to use the right?
00:18:59Or is Ali just fighting physiological laws that can't be overcome?
00:19:11A good quick right by Holmes.
00:19:1650 seconds into round three.
00:19:20Holmes continuing to use that jab.
00:19:26Ali kept at bay.
00:19:29A good combination by Holmes.
00:19:33He is younger by seven years.
00:19:36He is now much faster than the fastest heavyweight who has yet lived.
00:19:55Holmes, as you can readily see, doing all the scoring.
00:20:00Quick left to the face, then down to the midriff.
00:20:03A minute 35 into round three.
00:20:15Again, a good combination.
00:20:18And a little bit of hurt appeared in Ali's eyes.
00:20:21But Ali continues to talk to Holmes.
00:20:29Into the final minute of round three.
00:20:37Holmes is aware of Ali's right.
00:20:40Knows that what is left is in that hand.
00:20:5830 seconds left.
00:21:01Ali continues to talk.
00:21:08The verbal truculence does not equal the fistic truculence.
00:21:32We're almost ready for round four.
00:21:34Larry Holmes has won the first three rounds quite clearly.
00:21:38Quite cleanly.
00:21:41Ali has thrown one right in the first round.
00:21:45That did score.
00:21:46That's been about the size of it.
00:21:48The rest has been talking to Holmes.
00:21:55Holmes has been fighting behind his left jab.
00:21:59Occasionally, he's thrown rights in combination.
00:22:03A particularly good combination by Holmes in the second round.
00:22:1645 seconds into round four.
00:22:19And Holmes continues to use the jab.
00:22:21Got a good one in to the belly.
00:22:24Good rhythm, good rhythm, good rhythm, chap.
00:22:29Good rhythm.
00:22:31The belly up to the head and the double to the head and back to the belly.
00:22:37He's diversifying his jab very effectively.
00:22:40In the meantime, Ali having trouble.
00:22:45Having trouble even getting to Holmes.
00:22:49Because Holmes' left is so keeping him at bay.
00:22:53Right there.
00:22:54And again.
00:22:59But Holmes will be wary.
00:23:02No matter what he wants in the way of recognition, he doesn't want to make a mistake.
00:23:08Too much latent respect for the ability that used to be there.
00:23:14To risk finding out what, if anything, is left.
00:23:19Crowd roared as Ali suddenly sought to move in with a right.
00:23:29Seems to me there is a swelling to Ali's face.
00:23:33And most particularly under the left eye.
00:23:39There is no sign of blood.
00:23:5240 seconds left.
00:23:54Round four.
00:23:57So far, Holmes having a cautious cakewalk.
00:24:03Again, to the belly, after to the head.
00:24:06And again.
00:24:11There's the occasional right.
00:24:12Then the left.
00:24:14Ali.
00:24:15In the corner.
00:24:18Crowd roars every time Ali flicks.
00:24:22You can hear referee Green in the background cautioning Ali about holding on to the rope.
00:24:29With one hand flicking with the other.
00:24:35Bell for round five.
00:24:37Let's see if Ali can begin to put some punches together.
00:24:41Now you see him moving.
00:24:45Now you see him moving.
00:24:45Using the ring.
00:24:47First time he's done that.
00:24:59Now let's see how Holmes handles this.
00:25:04Fifth round action.
00:25:10The right lead by Holmes.
00:25:23Notice how Holmes is varying location on his jabs.
00:25:27In that pattern of to the face, to the belly, back up, back down.
00:25:41And a minute ten seconds gone in round five.
00:25:45How much of this can Ali do in this heat after all these years?
00:25:52And he is not scoring points while he does it.
00:25:55That was a good flicking left jab.
00:25:57That was a good flicking right.
00:26:01That's right.
00:26:02Keep moving.
00:26:03Keep moving.
00:26:04That's right.
00:26:04That's it.
00:26:05Nice right hands in there.
00:26:07Shoot it in there.
00:26:09Shoot it in there.
00:26:11Two quick lefts to the belly by Holmes, then up to the face.
00:26:16Not scoring well with the one to the face, but again, belly and head.
00:26:22Again, the face.
00:26:28Holmes, posturing for Ali now.
00:26:33Ali talking back.
00:26:35But they fight with blows, not with chatter.
00:26:49Constant rain of talk from Ali, but the lefts keep coming into his face.
00:27:03Well, you saw Ali shimmy like his sister, Kate.
00:27:07Holmes had done it earlier.
00:27:0925 seconds left in round five.
00:27:17Oh, a good, sharp left jab by Holmes.
00:27:22You see him doubling and tripling.
00:27:25So far, it is utterly no contest.
00:27:37We're back in Las Vegas, Nevada.
00:27:39Angie Dundee working over the damaged eye of Ali.
00:27:50Heard Dundee say, you've got to start firing to Ali.
00:27:58You can't see that.
00:28:01You all right, Muhammad?
00:28:03Come on.
00:28:04Dundee just asked Ali if he was all right.
00:28:07Ali said yes.
00:28:12This fight for the WBC World Heavyweight Championship, that was the bell for round six.
00:28:22There is a little red well under Ali's left eye.
00:28:28It has been, up to this point, no contest.
00:28:34And you see more of those lefts going in, scoring steadily against Muhammad Ali.
00:28:44And I repeat, Holmes has had excellent location with his jab.
00:29:08This is sixth round action.
00:29:12And in the last 30 seconds, Ali is doing better with his jab, getting to Holmes' belly, than he has
00:29:21done in the prior five rounds.
00:29:23But Holmes now comes back.
00:29:26Ali against the ropes.
00:29:29It was warned, you'll remember, in round four, about holding on to the ropes and hitting at the same time
00:29:36by referee Richard Green.
00:29:40There was the right of Holmes, and it jarred, Ali.
00:29:49Rich Cicchetti in the corner yelling, dig into him.
00:29:55That's it, Cicchetti said.
00:30:09We are almost two minutes into round six.
00:30:12We are almost two minutes into round six.
00:30:32Ali, not winning this round, in my opinion, but making better use of his left jab than he has in
00:30:38the fight until now.
00:30:41Cicchetti yelling, that's it, up and down, with the jab, he means.
00:30:45And Ali, too, saying the same thing.
00:30:50I don't know how that serves Muhammad, but it's all right with him, it's all right with me.
00:30:55Set him up nice, that's it, that's it.
00:30:57Hit it again.
00:30:59Set him up with the jab again.
00:31:01Get it up there, Ali is telling him.
00:31:03Get it up there.
00:31:08Hit me harder, Ali said, and so Holmes did.
00:31:14From the roof of Caesar's Palace, the ring behind it, where Holmes is defending his WBC heavyweight crown against Ali.
00:31:22All right, round seven.
00:31:25And no question, Ali's left eye has tightened.
00:31:31It is smaller, and it is swollen.
00:31:32The Holmes jabs have taken their toll, and Holmes may be ready to seek to unload a little more loosely
00:31:44than he has been.
00:31:46He has been, as I said, enjoying a cautious cakewalk.
00:31:54Now, Ali, or rather, Holmes, answering Ali in a way, sneeringly, with his shimmy.
00:32:12Last time Holmes did that shimmy, he purposefully walked Ali to the center of the ring.
00:32:20Where Ali said he wanted to meet him.
00:32:25Ali dancing on his toes now.
00:32:32Seventh round.
00:32:35Ali got in a couple of good jabs.
00:32:38I mentioned that in the sixth round, he began to get his jab working to some degree.
00:32:45And he's working it better now.
00:32:47Now, and the crowd is responding.
00:32:50A minute and a half into round seven.
00:33:02Ali getting in and out in a hurry with the jab.
00:33:09Now, against the ropes.
00:33:12Covering up as Holmes tries to get at him.
00:33:24Apart from the one caution about holding the rope, referee Green has had an easy time of it.
00:33:3645 seconds left in round seven and counting down.
00:33:46Not a great round, but Ali's best round up till now.
00:33:55See that?
00:33:56Ali doubled on the left successfully, and Holmes was angered.
00:34:05Ali covering, and yet two of the lefts got in, and Holmes getting angry.
00:34:10Went at the belly with the right.
00:34:16Oh, a good left and a right that sent Ali back against the ropes.
00:34:21Ali quickly covering, and even...
00:34:23Well, there he is.
00:34:26Angie Dundee talking to him.
00:34:29Ali's best round was that round, the seventh round.
00:34:32And yet, it's hard to score it for him, the way Holmes ended the round.
00:34:38Previous six rounds, Holmes was doing what he wanted.
00:34:42Ali's left eye grows smaller.
00:34:45I don't know what words of counsel he could get from Drew Brown Bundini.
00:34:55Now, you can see the discoloration under Ali's left eye.
00:35:09Bundini talking to Ali.
00:35:14Bundini may be more famous for some of the limericks he's contributed to Ali.
00:35:19Bet on Sonny and lose your money.
00:35:22But that was 1964.
00:35:25This is the eighth round, and quickly, Holmes scored with a lift to Ali's chin, and then another.
00:35:38What was it Ali said?
00:35:40Holmes will be mine in nine.
00:35:44Well, we're getting close.
00:35:46Step in with him.
00:35:48Step.
00:35:49Step.
00:35:59Again the left, and again.
00:36:01Get off.
00:36:02Right hand, champ, right hand.
00:36:05Get off.
00:36:07He's the student.
00:36:11Veronica.
00:36:13Ali's wife.
00:36:15Watch her.
00:36:16She didn't want him to fight.
00:36:18he paid no heed
00:36:29this is the 8th round

00:36:56Ali
00:36:58as Holmes tries to get through

00:38:44it is

00:45:53The whole game's over!
00:45:55I'm the Chief's second!
00:45:56All right!
00:45:56I stopped the fight!
00:45:57All right!
00:45:59He would not
00:46:01He would not give in
00:46:03Angelo Dundee
00:46:04He cared about his fighter too much
00:46:07The way Eddie Futch cared about Joe Frazier
00:46:10too much
00:46:11in 1975 in Manila
00:46:13to let him come out
00:46:15It is a sad way
00:46:16to see this great man's career end
00:46:19but it seemed inevitable
00:46:21I talked about the laws of physiology
00:46:26So now the scene
00:46:28in ring center
00:46:30and Larry Holmes
00:46:32is the heavyweight champion of the world
00:46:36He didn't fight
00:46:38spectacularly
00:46:39He didn't know what Ali had left
00:46:42if anything
00:46:42He fought carefully
00:46:44and he fought wisely
00:46:45and he fought well
00:46:47For Muhammad
00:46:51He must face the final curve
00:46:55Exactly what happened in the corner
00:46:58when you said you wanted to end it
00:47:00Well I had told Muhammad a few rounds before
00:47:03that if he don't start doing something
00:47:05I'm going to definitely stop the fight
00:47:07I said I'll give you one more shot at it
00:47:09see what you can get off
00:47:11see if you can put this guy
00:47:12because if you're not going to do nothing
00:47:13the guy's going to keep on whacking on you
00:47:15So when he came back that last round
00:47:17I said Muhammad there's nothing there
00:47:19you can't fire
00:47:20so I don't want to see you take a lick in there
00:47:22for no reason
00:47:24and that's when I got up
00:47:26and I told the referee
00:47:27no more
00:47:28In the meantime
00:47:29Drew Brown, Bundini
00:47:31fought you didn't he?
00:47:32Well no he met well
00:47:33he grabbed my sweater
00:47:34one more round, one more round
00:47:36but there's always one round too many
00:47:37and I don't want one more round
00:47:39where any fighter of mine is in the corner
00:47:43and Muhammad is my fighter
00:47:46all the years
00:47:48how do you feel
00:47:49seeing him wind up this way?
00:47:51all the years are dynamite
00:47:53I saw him on his feet
00:47:54that's what made me feel good
00:47:55he got licked
00:47:57he lost to a champion
00:47:58no disgrace
00:48:00what do you think of Holmes?
00:48:02good fighter
00:48:02I say he's the best man out there
00:48:0435 and 0
00:48:05at no time during any time
00:48:07when we were talking about the fight
00:48:09did I say anything derogatory about a champion
00:48:11how can you say anything derogatory about a champion?
00:48:13he is the champion
00:48:14did you really believe
00:48:16that at this stage
00:48:18after all these years
00:48:19Ali could come back
00:48:21and beat a fighter like Holmes?
00:48:23if I didn't believe it
00:48:24I wouldn't have said it
00:48:25I believed it
00:48:26I felt in my heart
00:48:27Muhammad could do the number
00:48:29and beat Larry Holmes
00:48:30but you can't lick nobody
00:48:31if you don't fire back
00:48:32you think Ali's position
00:48:35in boxing history
00:48:36will be tarnished by this?
00:48:38I don't think so
00:48:39I think Muhammad Ali is a legend
00:48:41he's an era
00:48:42he's been a heck of a good time
00:48:44for me to be with such a great man
00:48:48thank you
00:48:49you're looking at a man
00:48:50who just proved himself all over again
00:48:53and yet is a terribly dejected man
00:48:56Larry I'd like you to explain
00:48:58why you've been crying
00:48:59sitting here with your wife
00:49:01I love my wife
00:49:04you know so I really respect the whole lot
00:49:06really respect Ali the whole lot
00:49:08it hurt you to punish him that way didn't it?
00:49:12I felt that I had control every round
00:49:15and I was doing exactly what I wanted to do
00:49:17and the man just showed a lot of determination
00:49:20that he's one hell of an athlete
00:49:23and he can take a hell of a lot
00:49:25and I don't care what anybody say
00:49:26but I feel that he fought one of the baddest
00:49:29in the world today
00:49:30and you cannot take credit from him
00:49:33are you sorry now that you had to take this fight
00:49:36once and for all
00:49:37to establish yourself
00:49:39to get the monkey as you said off your back
00:49:41to see that end come to him?
00:49:44no I'm not sorry that I took this fight
00:49:46I'm just sorry that people didn't give me the just dues
00:49:49that I think I properly deserve
00:49:51and I'm still sure that today
00:49:52people are still not going to give me my just dues
00:49:55but we don't care about that
00:49:57we keep doing what we have to do
00:49:59and we keep winning
00:50:01and God bless Ali
00:50:02and I hope him
00:50:03many many years of happiness
00:50:05and I feel the same way about myself
00:50:08so now you've got a record number of consecutive title knockouts
00:50:12this one being a TKO
00:50:15my congratulations to you
00:50:17and I don't see anybody left to fight you
00:50:20that you can have any incentive against
00:50:22do you?
00:50:22yes Howard
00:50:24one guy that I would like to fight
00:50:26you
00:50:27that's the way it was ladies and gentlemen

00:50:43do you feel you've gotten the monkey off your back
00:50:46do you still feel cheated?
00:50:48no I don't feel cheated Howard
00:50:50but I still feel that the monkey be on my back
00:50:52because that's the way it is in this game
00:50:54you cannot certify everybody
00:50:56so who cares
00:50:57I just want to be able to certify me and my family
00:51:00controversy surrounded the fight
00:51:03in view of the aftermath of the events
00:51:05do you feel that the victory was tarnished by
00:51:08A. the drug controversy
00:51:10B. the urinalysis controversy
00:51:13no I don't think the
00:51:16winning the fight was tarnished because
00:51:17I fought a great man that night
00:51:19I felt that pills didn't have anything to do with
00:51:22the way this man was fighting
00:51:24it was all Larry Holmes
00:51:25Larry Holmes had something to do
00:51:28the way he was fighting
00:51:30every time he wanted to get off I was there first
00:51:33but not taking anything from Muhammad
00:51:35I think he's a great athlete
00:51:36he's a great human being
00:51:37and I always think he would be a great fighter
00:51:39a great person
00:51:40but I don't see that this man is capable of fighting me anymore
00:51:46alright
00:51:47now you folks know that after the fight
00:51:50Muhammad Ali went to the UCLA Medical Center
00:51:54and it was there disclosed
00:51:56that he had been taking a drug known as Thyrolar
00:52:00and that was for the treatment presumably
00:52:03of a hypothyroid condition
00:52:05do you feel that the taking of those drugs nullified you that night?
00:52:10well Howard, first of all I want to say
00:52:13Larry Holmes is great
00:52:16he's much better than I ever thought
00:52:18when he was my sparring partner
00:52:19he wasn't nearly that good
00:52:21I have that image in my mind
00:52:23he was a great fighter
00:52:24but I know I could have done better
00:52:26he's the true champion
00:52:27I advise all my followers
00:52:29until I get him back
00:52:30he is the man
00:52:31and I want people to say
00:52:33all my followers
00:52:35he's the man
00:52:35but I know it wasn't right
00:52:37if you saw the thing close
00:52:39I didn't perspire
00:52:40I was a little too weak
00:52:42I took punches
00:52:44they stopped it
00:52:45because I was too tired
00:52:46to really too tired
00:52:47to continue
00:52:48I'm not making excuses
00:52:49I never do
00:52:50but that night I wasn't right
00:52:53and I think
00:52:55that is a great man
00:52:56because he says
00:52:58I can get another shot
00:52:59if I prove myself
00:53:00by taking on top contender
00:53:02and I think
00:53:03I looked so bad that night
00:53:04I don't deserve a shot
00:53:05right at him
00:53:06I'm no champion
00:53:07I think I should come back
00:53:08and knock out somebody
00:53:10and show
00:53:10that I'm still
00:53:11who I am
00:53:13the greatest of all times
00:53:14and prove it
00:53:15alright
00:53:16you remain determined
00:53:18to fight again
00:53:19what I'd like to get to now
00:53:20is that drug controversy
00:53:22a few weeks back
00:53:24your personal physician
00:53:26Dr. Williams
00:53:27was on our late night news show
00:53:29Nightline
00:53:29Ted Koppel asked him
00:53:32why he prescribed
00:53:33Thyrolol
00:53:34for you to take
00:53:35before the fight
00:53:36here's Dr. Williams
00:53:37About two years ago
00:53:39while in New Orleans
00:53:41before the Sphinx fight
00:53:42I discovered
00:53:44that Dr. Ali
00:53:46was suffering from hypothyroidism
00:53:48and this was confirmed
00:53:50by laboratory examinations
00:53:55and his appearance
00:53:59in the following months
00:54:01confirmed my impression
00:54:02that he was suffering
00:54:03from myxedema
00:54:05What is that in layman's terms?
00:54:07Well hypothyroidism
00:54:09to an extent
00:54:09where there is the swollen appearance
00:54:13of the face
00:54:13which simulated that caused by kidney trouble
00:54:19and a swollen appearance
00:54:21of the arms and legs
00:54:22and the abdomen
00:54:25therefore
00:54:25I treated the condition
00:54:27in order to bring him
00:54:28to a normal state
00:54:29of metabolism
00:54:31Now Dr. Williams
00:54:32forgive me
00:54:33I'm a layman
00:54:33both in terms of medicine
00:54:35and in terms of sports
00:54:36but it seems to me
00:54:37that if Muhammad Ali
00:54:38was suffering from that
00:54:39kind of a condition
00:54:40he shouldn't be in the ring at all
00:54:41Well
00:54:43Well
00:54:43I
00:54:44I had
00:54:46I went to
00:54:48Las Vegas
00:54:49during the third week
00:54:51prior to the bout
00:54:53and during
00:54:54prior to that time
00:54:55he had been approved
00:54:56by the Mayo Clinic
00:54:57and also approved
00:55:00by
00:55:00the boxing commissioner's doctor
00:55:03Dr. Romano
00:55:05in Las Vegas
00:55:06and
00:55:07therefore
00:55:08it was my duty
00:55:10I felt
00:55:11to
00:55:12see that
00:55:13his water
00:55:14balance
00:55:15his salt balance
00:55:16and
00:55:17his
00:55:20general condition
00:55:22were such
00:55:23as to
00:55:24provide him
00:55:25with maximum
00:55:25endurance
00:55:27and
00:55:27performance
00:55:28for the fight
00:55:29Well
00:55:30as to water balance
00:55:32which Dr. Williams
00:55:33just mentioned
00:55:34Muhammad has said
00:55:35I didn't sweat
00:55:36and he has said
00:55:37he was dehydrated
00:55:39now you watched the fight
00:55:40did you see Muhammad sweat?
00:55:42I did more than
00:55:43watch the fight Howard
00:55:44I was in the fight
00:55:45and
00:55:46when I hit him with a punch
00:55:47I could see water jumping off of him
00:55:49and watching the fight now
00:55:50you cannot see him really
00:55:52perspire
00:55:52that much
00:55:53but
00:55:54by me knowing
00:55:56Muhammad
00:55:56and knowing myself
00:55:58I perspire a great deal
00:56:00when I'm fighting
00:56:01he didn't perspire as much
00:56:02but he was perspiring
00:56:03okay
00:56:04now there was another
00:56:06controversy
00:56:07ladies and gentlemen
00:56:08it involved
00:56:09the urinal
00:56:09urinalysis
00:56:10that habitually
00:56:11takes place
00:56:12after a fight
00:56:14in Muhammad's case
00:56:15there was
00:56:16the discovery
00:56:16of drugs
00:56:17in point of fact
00:56:18the urinalysis
00:56:19didn't occur
00:56:20till some three hours
00:56:22or the specimen
00:56:22wasn't taken
00:56:23after the fight
00:56:24had ended
00:56:25in this regard
00:56:26earlier today
00:56:28I talked with
00:56:29the chairman
00:56:29of the Nevada State
00:56:31Athletic Commission
00:56:32Mr. Sid Rogish
00:56:34a gentleman
00:56:34of some considerable
00:56:35experience in boxing
00:56:37here was my conversation
00:56:39with him
00:56:40well
00:56:41we'll have that conversation
00:56:43in a second
00:56:44I want to explain
00:56:45further
00:56:45that what was found
00:56:47in the urinalysis
00:56:48was essentially
00:56:49an antidepressant drug
00:56:51and what in effect
00:56:52was a tranquilizer
00:56:53or painkiller
00:56:55and
00:56:56the
00:56:57commission
00:56:58had intended
00:56:59involuntarily
00:57:01to render
00:57:02Ali
00:57:03retired
00:57:04they did not
00:57:05do so
00:57:06instead
00:57:07they received
00:57:08legal advice
00:57:09from the State
00:57:09Attorney General
00:57:10the conversation
00:57:12explains
00:57:13Sig, since it's the
00:57:14avowed intent
00:57:14of your commission
00:57:15to place Ali
00:57:16into involuntary
00:57:18retirement
00:57:18why the forthcoming
00:57:20hearing
00:57:21where you've given
00:57:21him 30 days notice
00:57:23to respond?
00:57:24Howard, he's entitled
00:57:25to his day in court
00:57:26as anyone would be
00:57:27in a situation like this
00:57:28and we should hear
00:57:29the facts and then
00:57:30make our final determination
00:57:31in other words
00:57:32due process of law
00:57:34yes sir
00:57:34you don't want a repeat
00:57:36of what was done
00:57:36in 1967
00:57:38I just want Muhammad Ali
00:57:40to know
00:57:40and his people to know
00:57:41that we're going to give them
00:57:42every opportunity to present
00:57:43their case
00:57:44do you think a question of
00:57:46drugs is involved here?
00:57:48no I don't believe so
00:57:49I think it's more a question
00:57:50of what's best for his health
00:57:52and his safety
00:57:52and the integrity of the sport
00:57:53of boxing
00:57:54alright if you don't think
00:57:56drugs are involved
00:57:57and we'll deal separately
00:57:59in this show
00:58:00with the question
00:58:01of the thyroid treatments
00:58:03let's deal now
00:58:04with what you have jurisdiction over
00:58:06the urinalysis
00:58:08after the fight
00:58:09Dr. Wurgis
00:58:10took the specimen
00:58:12that was several hours
00:58:14after the fight
00:58:15in the interim
00:58:16according to Dr. Williams
00:58:18Ali's physician
00:58:19he had given Ali
00:58:22a
00:58:25an antidepressant
00:58:26and b
00:58:27in effect
00:58:27a tranquilizer
00:58:28to settle a fighter down
00:58:30he said he thought
00:58:31Dr. Wurgis
00:58:32had already taken
00:58:33the specimen of urine
00:58:35do you take Dr. Williams
00:58:37word for it?
00:58:37I do I do
00:58:38I think that he had nothing
00:58:39to gain by telling us
00:58:40otherwise
00:58:40he's a professional doctor
00:58:42and I just don't believe
00:58:43he would jeopardize himself
00:58:45in light of the Nevada State
00:58:46Athletic Commission
00:58:47or anyone else
00:58:47in a manner like that
00:58:48Sig if in the course of your hearing
00:58:51you determine
00:58:52that Ali
00:58:53in your opinion
00:58:54based upon all the facts
00:58:56and evidence
00:58:56should be
00:58:58involuntarily retired
00:58:59in your state
00:59:00is it your hope
00:59:01that the commissions
00:59:02of other states
00:59:04will follow suit?
00:59:05I would hope so
00:59:05I don't think there's
00:59:06any difference
00:59:07in a man's safety
00:59:08in one state
00:59:09as opposed to another
00:59:10and I would hope that
00:59:11for the integrity of boxing
00:59:12that others would follow suit
00:59:14and give us the support
00:59:15that we need
00:59:15Thank you very much sir
00:59:17Thank you
00:59:19So that was the Chairman Muhammad
00:59:21of the Nevada State
00:59:22Athletic Commission
00:59:23the intent clearly
00:59:24if the evidence
00:59:25adduced points to it
00:59:27to involuntarily retire you
00:59:29at least in the state of Nevada
00:59:31but this time
00:59:32you'll get a hearing
00:59:33It speaks like a just man
00:59:34I don't like to say this
00:59:36because even he
00:59:38or anybody
00:59:38come to work one day
00:59:40and they have lungitis
00:59:41or they're not right
00:59:42I don't think it's right
00:59:43to take his livelihood
00:59:44because he had a bad day
00:59:46They were supposed to check my urine
00:59:48after the fight
00:59:49They waited for me
00:59:50to go back to the hotel
00:59:51three or four hours
00:59:52went by
00:59:53doctor gave me some type
00:59:54of anesthetic
00:59:55from a pain
00:59:56then they let me
00:59:57urinate into a cough
00:59:58after I had taken the anesthetic
01:00:02then they found it
01:00:03they should have been checking me out
01:00:05immediately after the fight
01:00:06I went with me
01:00:07why come four hours later
01:00:09so naturally something was in my system
01:00:12well they're not going to use that against you
01:00:14as you just heard
01:00:15they just feel that
01:00:17your boxing days have passed
01:00:19well I didn't get knocked down
01:00:20I didn't really get hurt
01:00:22I couldn't name fighters
01:00:23I wouldn't embarrass them
01:00:24who've been knocked out lately
01:00:25laying out like that
01:00:27fought for every fight
01:00:28like that
01:00:29they keep fighting
01:00:29I wasn't hurt or knocked out
01:00:31even in that bad condition
01:00:32I wasn't really beat a bad
01:00:34they stopped me because I was too tired
01:00:36and wasn't right
01:00:36so why deny me a life
01:00:38because I had a bad night
01:00:41why are you so determined
01:00:43to continue fighting
01:00:44because I'm
01:00:44you've been a hero to many people
01:00:46in this country
01:00:47I don't want to be no fool
01:00:48and go out on my stool
01:00:51you said
01:00:53Holmes will be mine in nine
01:00:55I lied
01:00:57you're all so crazy
01:00:59you realize that
01:01:00don't you
01:01:00it takes work nowhere
01:01:03but as MacArthur says
01:01:04I shall return
01:01:05Holmes is a just man
01:01:07he says let Ali
01:01:08prove that he's qualified
01:01:10well is there another fight
01:01:11in the mill
01:01:12we're working on a couple
01:01:13of top contenders
01:01:14I'm going to come back
01:01:15I did four rounds
01:01:16at Mike Reed's farm partner
01:01:17the other day in Kentucky
01:01:18dance and move
01:01:20and it was beautiful
01:01:20you heard about it
01:01:21anyway I'm going to take on
01:01:23tell all of you now
01:01:23I'm going to take on a top contender
01:01:26and knock him out
01:01:27show you I'm supreme
01:01:28and then I shall come back
01:01:30and let me shake your hand Larry
01:01:32thank you very much
01:01:33who's next for you Larry
01:01:35if Ali hurry up
01:01:36and knock somebody out
01:01:37he'll be next
01:01:38oh man
01:01:38we're not going to worry about that
01:01:39I'm not worried
01:01:40I'm not worried
01:01:40good luck to you both
01:01:41we're going to continue to go on
01:01:42thank you both for coming by
01:01:44you two fine gentlemen
01:01:45really are
01:01:46and good friends too
01:01:47he's bad
01:01:48alright
01:01:50call you both champions
01:01:51he's the champ of the world
01:01:53that's it ladies and gentlemen
01:01:55Holmes against Ali
01:01:56you saw it
01:01:57and we end on a usually familiar note
01:02:02as Ali seeks to reprove himself all over again
01:02:05under any circumstances
01:02:07a reminder
01:02:08Jim Watt won on a technical knockout
01:02:10in the 12th round
01:02:11over challenger Sean O'Grady
01:02:13over in Glasgow, Scotland
01:02:14all the judges' cards
01:02:16at the time the fight was terminated
01:02:18favored Jim Watt
01:02:19in the meantime too
01:02:21remember
01:02:22tomorrow
01:02:2312 o'clock
01:02:24New York time
01:02:25beginning
01:02:26first game of a double header
01:02:27over most of these ABC stations
01:02:30NCAA college football
01:02:32it'll be fourth ranked Georgia Q Larry
01:02:35very much
01:02:36and you'll see two of the great running backs of the country
01:02:39Herschel Walker of Georgia against George Rogers of South Carolina
01:02:43then regional games
01:02:45of Muhammad Ali
01:02:50think in terms of bridges burned
01:02:57think of seasons that must end
01:03:04see the rivers rise and fall
01:03:11they will rise and fall again
01:03:18everything will start again
01:03:21like an ocean to a shore
01:03:25like a river to a stream
01:03:32like a river to a stream
01:03:35like a river to a stream
01:03:40it's the famous final scene
01:03:56it's the famous final scene
01:03:57and how you tried to make it work
01:04:05did you really think it could
01:04:12how you tried to make it last
01:04:19did you really think it would
01:04:26you really think it would
01:04:27like a river to a stream
