00:00:18We're back inside coming up next
00:00:20is fight night in Phoenix
00:00:21continues our main event the WBC
00:00:24Super Lightweight Championship
00:00:25Kostya Zou versus Julio Cesar
00:00:28Chavez. Before we get started
00:00:32though let's swing it back over to
00:00:33Jim Gray with a special guest Jim.
00:00:35Indeed a very special guest one of
00:00:37the legends in the fight game
00:00:38Sugar Ray Leonard joins us. Sugar it
00:00:40is very hot in here you fought a lot
00:00:43of fights outdoors in the heat 112
00:00:45outside probably 100 degrees in
00:00:47here is heat a concern or a factor
00:00:49in the fight? It's not much of a
00:00:51factor indoors here Jim I think
00:00:53that the fight was outside there
00:00:55will be a difference because of
00:00:56the humidity and what have you he
00:00:57would he would be D be a factor but
00:00:59here you know it's pretty cool to be
00:01:02honest with you. Let me ask you you're
00:01:04a guy who fought beyond his prime you
00:01:06came back a couple of times there's
00:01:08been a lot of controversy about Hector
00:01:10Macho Camacho I'm sorry about Julio
00:01:12Cesar Chavez now and he's fighting at
00:01:1438 years of age lost two of his last
00:01:16five fights a man who is on the
00:01:19downward side of his career why does a
00:01:23man continue? Well you must also
00:01:25understand coming from a fighter's
00:01:27perspective that's what makes a fighter who he is a champion who he was and for Chavez he's looking at this fight as being one of his last hurrah. I think he'll know from this fight after this fight whatever happens whether or not he should or should not continue. Would you have advised him before the fight to take this fight or to move along?
00:01:44Or to move along? Well Jim you asked the wrong person I basically damn come back I can't say honestly but I think with this fight against Klaus Azu he would know for sure whether it's time to retire.
00:01:54Did you regret at all coming back and do you feel in any way shape or form it put a damper on your career or did the people forget?
00:02:02I don't think put a damper on my career but if anything I've only had two regrets in my whole boxing career and that was my fight against Hector Camacho and also Terry Norris.
00:02:12Any fear tonight that Chavez could get hurt based off what we saw against Willie Wise? He has experience and maybe this is the stimulus that would take him off the top. Who knows? Time will tell.
00:02:22Ray we appreciate you coming on and taking the time. Good to see you.
00:02:24It's a pleasure Jim. Thank you.
00:02:25He's getting to be a promoter. Promoter Sugar Ray Leonard. That's why he's here tonight. Over to you Steve.
00:02:30Thanks very much Jim and Sugar Ray as we get ready for what everybody came here to see.
00:02:35Klaus Azu versus Julio Cesar Chavez for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship from Phoenix, Arizona.
00:02:44We're looking forward to it. Klaus Azu a confident, disciplined, intelligent fighter with a ruthless attitude.
00:02:50Perhaps the best way to describe his style is controlled fury. While he's well aware that Julio Cesar Chavez has passed his prime and the underdog tonight, he's taking nothing for granted.
00:03:00Zu talked about his fight with a boxing legend, a man he truly respects.
00:03:05He was a great, great, great boxer. I believe he's the best Mexican fighter I've ever been. And he's a legend. He's a tiger. Maybe he's getting older. But you're fighting against tiger. You have to be ready. And if you're not ready, you're going to make big mistakes.
00:03:34You're going to make big mistakes. I believe he's very dangerous. What I've done, I've prepared for the best Chavez. And it's an advantage for me. I've prepared for the Chavez we all knew for the last decade.
00:03:49He was strong, powerful, determined fighter, who was not mercy for anybody. Just come and destroy people. That's what I trained for.
00:04:01Well, it's unlikely to okay versus an icon like Chavez, but he's not only expected to win, he's expected to dominate. Back here with Bobby Chez. Will Sue tarnish his stature with a subpar performance against an aging Chavez?
00:04:19Steve, any fighter, terrific or not, with a subpar performance, will not only taint their stature and their image, but what else happens is it hits him in the box office.
00:04:28He's just saying you're only as good as your last performance. Your last performance was subpar or so-so. You probably will get paid subpar or so-so. It's not something Costas who wants.
00:04:37And Chavez certainly needs to really dig what he has to do here tonight. To hit you in the wallet. Absolutely.
00:04:42All right. Tonight, we're set to bring you our first commentary from Renaissance man, writer, painter, boxing commentator, Ferdi Pacheco, the fight doctor. Yes, the doctor is in.
00:04:53The greatest Mexican fighter of all time, Julio Cesar Chavez is shuffling forward on unsteady feet to join the long gray line of old fighters who have fought past their prime toward a big punch drunk arena.
00:05:13And why should he be any different from Sugar Ray Robinson or Joe Louis or Muhammad Ali? Whether or not Chavez can pull together the remnant of his former greatness, he stands out as an example of what is wrong with boxing.
00:05:26The WBC has ranked him the number one contender in the 140 pound class. Can anybody tell me why? In the past year, he's not fought a ranked fighter in any weight class.
00:05:37He hasn't fought at 140 pounds since March 1998 and he's lost two of his last five fights, including a one sided loss to a journeyman, Willie Wise.
00:05:47He's fighting one of the best fighters in the world in Costa Zoo. This is a mismatch of the worst possible kind.
00:05:55Well, who's to blame? We all are. Starting with the WBC for mandating the fight and the local boxing commission for licensing it.
00:06:02The promoter who has no choice but to stage a fight or have his fighter stripped of his belt.
00:06:07But add him to the list and let's not forget us. The television network for showing it.
00:06:12And the public for coming to see it. And last of all, the fighter himself, whose self-delusion cannot be faulted.
00:06:18After all, he is thinking with a damaged organ, his battered brain. My personal bottom line, we are all to blame and shame on us all.
00:06:26This is the fight doctor and this is my diagnosis.
00:06:35Strong words from the fight doctor. So after that, Bobby, why are we here?
00:06:40Well, Steve, it's kind of simple and kind of complicated.
00:06:42You see, sanctioning bodies do things. And as I talked about earlier, they have an agenda.
00:06:47Julio Cesar Chavez is a mandatory fight for Costas Zoo. He doesn't want to be stripped. So he has to fight him.
00:06:53Costas Zoo has a deal with Showtime to put his fights on. So we have to show this fight.
00:06:57Having said that, Julio Cesar Chavez in his prime, in his heyday, was the quintessential search-and-destroy fighter.
00:07:03Going through the head and body in unison as well as maybe any other fighter in history as well.
00:07:08He was terrific in endurance and hammered people and pounded them into submission.
00:07:12But even the grade of heart and the grade of talent fade with time.
00:07:16And certainly Chavez has pushed the limits. And here tonight, he may be on the brink of disaster.
00:07:21So a daunting task for Julio Cesar Chavez tonight as he attempts to get back on top
00:07:26from the highly competitive 140-pound weight class.
00:07:29An integral part of that ultra-talented division is flashy Brooklyn Southpaw Zab Judah,
00:07:35who holds the IVF belt a week from tonight here on Showtime.
00:07:38Zab meets former champ Teron Millett in perhaps his biggest test to date.
00:07:42Zab joins us at ringside. Zab, first of all, thanks for making the trip in.
00:07:46Now, Teron Millett said that he belongs here, not you.
00:07:50That he's the one who's going to wind up fighting the winner of two versus Chavez.
00:07:54Your response to that?
00:07:56Uh, I don't know what he said about that. You know, Teron Millett is, uh, he's an ex-champion
00:08:02and, um, I'm looking forward to the fight next Saturday night.
00:08:05And I'm, I'm very prepared and I can't wait.
00:08:08Your thoughts on the talented 140-pound division. Zab, where, where you figure into the equation overall?
00:08:15I mean, right now, you know, the Gene Walserweight division is hot right now.
00:08:18You got a lot of fighters out there. You got Sean Bermitri, you got Kassie Zou, you got, uh, Camacho.
00:08:22You got, you know, um, so off and so off. But, you know, right now, I'm on a mission right now.
00:08:27And my mission is to go in there and just destroy anybody in my way. No Camacho, no Chavez, no, no, no, no Kassie Zou.
00:08:35None of them can stand in my way. Trust me.
00:08:37How about Kassie Zou versus Julio Cesar Chavez coming up in just a few minutes?
00:08:41How do you see this fight playing out, Sav?
00:08:43I mean, you know, it's an interesting fight. You know, you got, you got a, uh, uh, uh, uh, a modern Kassie Zou.
00:08:48You got a late Chavez, you know what I mean? I mean, back in the day, Chavez would have been a better fight for him.
00:08:52But, you know, now, I don't know how to fight when I come across, but it should be a great fight either way.
00:08:57Thank you very much, Sav. Don't go too far. We want to get your impressions later, okay?
00:09:00For sure.
00:09:01Thanks for joining us. Let's turn back to, uh, Bobby Chez. You heard what Sav had to say about the main event.
00:09:05How about your keys to victory for Zou versus Chavez?
00:09:08Well, let's start with the champion Kassie Zou, the heart-punching junior welterweight.
00:09:13He's got to keep Chavez backing up. Chavez cannot fight going backwards.
00:09:16Also, set the pace, force the old man to work too hard, and that big right hand, he has a tremendous right hand.
00:09:22Here against Miguel Angel Gonzalez, he throws a little combination of right and the left, then a big right hand rocking Gonzalez.
00:09:29Now, after he rocks Gonzalez, he will keep the pressure on. He will not allow this gap to be here.
00:09:36He will head in and keep the pressure on. He'll start with hooks to the body, overhand rights, and he will hit Gonzalez from every angle that he can
00:09:44to keep consistent body pressure on Gonzalez. There's the left of the body and the right.
00:09:49There's some that missed, but there is. He's constantly in your face.
00:09:52This type of pressure on an older, fading Chavez may prove to be too much for him, but this is one of the things he needs to do to win.
00:09:59Keep hammering the body and wear it down until eventually he quits.
00:10:03For Chavez, he's going to have to do some very important things. He's going to have to crowd and stay on the inside against Zu.
00:10:13He can't let Zu set that right hand over. Also, pushes Zu back, who also doesn't fight well going backwards.
00:10:18And that left hook to the body is his signature punch. Here he's coming into the picture on the right is Chavez against Edwin Rosario.
00:10:26He's going to start right with that left hook to the body and then unload, as he always has, to the head and body in combination.
00:10:32That's what he does so well. That's what he does so good. He's famous for it. The left hook comes in.
00:10:38There's a little elbow as well. He's been famous for those, too. And lefts and rights up over the top underneath.
00:10:44This is the type of pressure. Can he get back 85 or 90 percent if he once had?
00:10:49He's going to have to turn back the clock big time tonight, but it's one of the keys he needs to do to win.
00:10:54This crowd, which is heavily Hispanic, is ready to rock here at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix, Arizona.
00:11:02It looks like a near sellout. Close to 15,000. So let's bring on our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr., to bring on the Challenger.
00:11:13Ladies and gentlemen, we are ready for the main event of the evening. Prepare to welcome the boxers to the ring.
00:11:20First, ladies and gentlemen, here is the Challenger introducing Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:11:29The crowd favorite Julio Cesar Chavez trying to fight through the crowd. His 110th fight. Always entering with fanfare.
00:11:58Music, lots of color. Unbelievable scene with this raucous crowd. He looked to be in good condition at the weigh-in.
00:12:12He seems hungry and determined, but it can all be deceiving for years regarded as the best pound-for-pound in the world.
00:12:19But regardless of tonight's outcome, I feel he should retire. It's fully understood why he continues.
00:12:25The money, the limelight, the pride, the ego. It's certainly understood why promoters want him in there.
00:12:30He's still box office. As you can plainly see here with this crowd.
00:12:35Yet we saw his embarrassing loss to Willie Wise, even if he did train properly, as Bobby pointed out.
00:12:42And prior to that, even, his ring skills have eroded his recent wins versus unknowns.
00:12:48His last fight at 140, March of 98. A controversial draw with Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:12:54The feeling is he'll be fighting tonight on instinct. The spirit is willing, but the flesh, perhaps a different story.
00:13:01Bobby, simply put, how much does he have left?
00:13:05You know what, Steve? Simply put, tonight we find out exactly what Chavez has left.
00:13:10I don't think he trained for Willie Wise as we talked about, and Willie Wise was a journeyman.
00:13:14This is the champion, Kasia Zou, in his prime. He brings a ton of power. He's hungry.
00:13:19He has enormous power in both hands. Good endurance. Only one person has gotten a distance with him.
00:13:24Tonight he's going to be pushed, Chavez, to his limits. You'll find out exactly what's left in the tank tonight.
00:13:29Chavez comes in first, but it's as if he's the champion. That's the feeling here.
00:13:35Well, if a Willie Wise showed Chavez no respect, why should Kasia Zou?
00:13:40Also, Wise outspeeded Chavez, whose reflexes and timing are not what they used to be.
00:13:50Look at this crowd in the ring. Sombreros, Mexican flags, and one Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:13:58There's almost no room for his opponent.
00:14:01As we await the entrance of the champion, Kasia Zou.
00:14:14Kasia Zou taking his time. There have been death threats towards Kasia Zou.
00:14:20So, he is very security-minded, security-conscious before he comes into the ring.
00:14:25Can you imagine that? That's how emotional and how hot things have gotten.
00:14:30And I'm not talking about the weather.
00:14:32So, we continue to await the arrival of the champion, Kasia Zou.
00:14:43And he's waiting for the security to come and get him from the dressing room.
00:14:48You know, Steve, believe it or not, I had two death threats on my life and my entire career.
00:14:54Won against a fighter named Reggie, I mean, Mohamed, formerly Reggie Jones.
00:14:58And once against Robbie Simms, Marvin Hagel's head-brother.
00:15:01And it got my dad quite upset and my mom quite upset.
00:15:03But it didn't bother me quite that much.
00:15:05I was focused on the fight and just hopeful nothing happened and thankfully nothing did.
00:15:09But I can imagine what might be going through Kasia Zou's mind with that type of situation.
00:15:15Well, it's tough enough when you have a legend like Julio Cesar Chavez,
00:15:20even though he's not in his prime, in front of you.
00:15:22And then you're worried about ducking something else.
00:15:29Every time you hear a noise, somebody steps on a beer can or a cup.
00:15:36It sounds like a gun going on.
00:15:39And now, Kasia Zou hearing the boos.
00:15:49They're not saying Sue, they're saying boo in this case.
00:15:52Bobby, what is it like for a fighter to be waiting in the ring that long?
00:15:57What is it from that perspective when you're waiting for somebody else, even though it is not Sue's fault?
00:16:02Well, my first title shot against Sloban Kachar in September of 86.
00:16:06He left me waiting in the ring for a little while.
00:16:08And you know what? It really didn't bother me.
00:16:10I was prepared for the wait.
00:16:11If it came, it came. If it didn't, it didn't.
00:16:13But what I tried to do is use that to a mental edge.
00:16:15When he came, I started taunting him as he walked up.
00:16:18So he had to see me in the ring yelling at him.
00:16:21All right, so that's how Bobby handled it.
00:16:25Let's get it up to Jimmy Leonard Jr. once again for Kasia Zou's ring walk.
00:16:30And now, ladies and gentlemen, making his way to the ring, here is the defending world champion, Kasia Zou.
00:16:43Well, finally, the emergence from his dressing room of Russian-born Australian citizen Kasia Zou,
00:16:50with trainer Johnny Lewis, promoter Vlad Wharton, Peter Mitrovsky, his father Boris,
00:16:56who worked in the Soviet steel mills for over three decades.
00:16:59There he is right behind him.
00:17:01Two-time champion, a villain among Mexican fans,
00:17:05off his first successful defense of the WBC title,
00:17:08an eighth round TKO of Mexico's Ahmed Santos,
00:17:11dominated the action that included two knockdowns,
00:17:14and that win on the heels of his punishing tenth round TKO
00:17:18over former champion Miguel Ángel Gonzalez, also of Mexico, to win the belt.
00:17:23He has wins over Rafael Ruelas and Cuban Díaz Feliz Hercado.
00:17:28He's also beaten Roger Mayweather, Livingstone Bramble, and Juan Laporte.
00:17:33His only loss to Vince Phillips, 1997, a tenth round TKO.
00:17:39He's 6-0 all by knockout since the loss.
00:17:43As the crescendo of Boos builds, as Sue gets closer to the ring,
00:17:49his father Boris on the right of your screen to his left,
00:17:52now in front of him holding the belt.
00:17:55Bobby, what makes Kasia Zou so dangerous?
00:17:57For Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:17:59Well, there are several things, Steve.
00:18:00He has a sort of combination.
00:18:02He's in your block, Americanized style.
00:18:04A little bit of a hybrid, if you will.
00:18:05He keeps that left hand high and out there in the defensive mode,
00:18:09as well as a point-getter and a range-finder.
00:18:11But then what he brings is heat.
00:18:13He brings a terrific right hand, big power.
00:18:16He has power in his left hook.
00:18:17He's tenacious.
00:18:18He's an ever-present, excuse me, ever-present force.
00:18:22He's in your face.
00:18:23A lot of strength.
00:18:24And you know what?
00:18:25He's a mean guy in the ring.
00:18:26He's not a nice man when it comes fight time.
00:18:28But, of course, nobody's perfect.
00:18:30And would you say his biggest weakness is?
00:18:33Number one, at times leaves himself open to right hands,
00:18:37and also has a tendency to strictly headhunt
00:18:40and not make the proper adjustments on the fly.
00:18:43Once in a while, he can't make them on the fly.
00:18:45He tends to have to go back to the corner.
00:18:46That is a little bit of a fault.
00:18:48And he's so offensive-minded that he sometimes
00:18:50leaves himself open for right hands.
00:18:52Chavez's main weapon is his left hook,
00:18:54but his right hand's not bad.
00:18:59So, the long wait continues for Julio Cesar Chavez,
00:19:02but that wait will soon be over
00:19:04as Sue finally makes it to the apron of the ring.
00:19:12Trainer Johnny Lewis trying to hold the rope open
00:19:15so he can make his way in.
00:19:18Boy, it is just bedlam here in Phoenix.
00:19:27It's a small ring.
00:19:32Sue getting psyched as he gets closer and closer
00:19:35to getting inside those ropes.
00:19:39And he hops over.
00:19:41Let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tank.
00:19:44Chavez is now 38 years old, eight years older than Sue.
00:19:47The height is even.
00:19:49The reach nearly the same.
00:19:51Both made weight yesterday.
00:19:52WBC had them weigh in periodically in advance of this fight.
00:19:55Very unorthodox.
00:19:56The fight time weights,
00:19:58150 plus ten and a half.
00:20:00Chavez refused to step on the scale.
00:20:02And the key rules for this WBC title fight.
00:20:04No standing eight count.
00:20:06No three knockdown rule.
00:20:07A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:20:10If an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth round,
00:20:12it's a technical draw.
00:20:13After the end of the fourth, they go to the scorecard.
00:20:15So here at Boisterous Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix,
00:20:21we're getting ready for the main event,

00:22:51El Gran Campeon Nehidano,
00:22:55introducing Julio Cesar Chavez!
00:23:11And ladies and gentlemen,
00:23:12his opponent across the ring is the defending world champion on my left,
00:23:15fighting out of the red corner,
00:23:17wearing black trunks with gold lettering,
00:23:20fighting out of Sydney, Australia,
00:23:22by way of Serov, Russia!
00:23:24He weighed in at a ready 139 and one half pounds,
00:23:29with a record of 24 wins,
00:23:31one loss and one draw,
00:23:33he has 20 wins coming by way of knockout,
00:23:36ladies and gentlemen,
00:23:37here is the former IBF world champion,
00:23:40and the current WBC Super Lightweight champion of the world,
00:23:44introducing,
00:23:46Kostya Suu!
00:23:56Once again a referee in charge,
00:23:58Bobby Ferrara now to give instructions.
00:24:00Gentlemen,
00:24:02you've been given the instructions earlier in the day,
00:24:04I expect a clean fight from both of you,
00:24:06your trunks are in great shape,
00:24:08no punching on the trunks,
00:24:10okay,
00:24:11protect yourselves at all times,
00:24:12shake hands,
00:24:13go back and wait for the bell.
00:24:15Extremely emotional,
00:24:17nationalistic environment here in the arena,
00:24:19Suu's typical MO,
00:24:21go for the early knockout,
00:24:22he'll test his opponent's heart and chin almost,
00:24:24immediately,
00:24:25he's mean and strong,
00:24:26hits hard,
00:24:27and straight ahead,
00:24:28even in his prime,
00:24:29Chavez,
00:24:30a notoriously slow starter,
00:24:31at his best,
00:24:32a debilitating puncher,
00:24:33relentlessly and ferociously,
00:24:35attacks the body,
00:24:36and through punches and fast,
00:24:38accurate combinations.
00:24:40So here we go,
00:24:41round one,
00:24:42it's scheduled,
00:24:43for 12,
00:24:44for the WBC Super Lightweight Championship.
00:24:46Kostya Suu,
00:24:47the champion of the black,
00:24:48Julio Cesar Chavez,
00:24:49in the colors of the Mexican flag,
00:24:51green, red and white.
00:24:53These first three rounds are key,
00:24:55Chavez cannot fight,
00:24:56going backwards,
00:24:57he's not a boxer,
00:24:58an outside slip mover.
00:24:59He cannot allow Chavez to,
00:25:01to me,
00:25:02to bully him around,
00:25:03if Chavez is gonna have any chance,
00:25:04he has to be coming forward.
00:25:05Will Chavez resort to old tricks,
00:25:07if things get out of hand,
00:25:09if he's looking for a way out,
00:25:10headbutting,
00:25:11inducing cuts,
00:25:12to end the fight,
00:25:13and try to get a technical decision,
00:25:15or will he go all out,
00:25:16time's best,
00:25:17to win fair and spare,
00:25:18Kostya Suu misses,
00:25:19he's gonna move around,
00:25:20it's a nice jab by Chavez,
00:25:21to the court,
00:25:22Zu right square in the face.
00:25:24Zu unable to counter effectively.
00:25:26And while Chavez typically,
00:25:28is a slow starter,
00:25:29Zu thought that Chavez,
00:25:31would start fast tonight.
00:25:32He says,
00:25:33Chavez is in good condition,
00:25:34but he can't go 12,
00:25:35he's also looking to make a big statement,
00:25:37that's for sure.
00:25:38But Zu said,
00:25:39he'll put pressure out for the start.
00:25:41Be busy,
00:25:42allow no rest for Chavez,
00:25:43go to the body,
00:25:44not the head,
00:25:45since we all know Chavez head,
00:25:47is like a rock.
00:25:48Well it's like a rock,
00:25:49but a rock that splits once in a while,
00:25:51because Chavez does have a lot of cut problems,
00:25:53around the eye.
00:25:54I predict there will be a cut somewhere,
00:25:55within the first five rounds.
00:25:57And interesting,
00:25:59Zu is known as a head hunter,
00:26:01but he said he would,
00:26:02concentrate on the body,
00:26:04against Chavez.
00:26:06Yeah, he thought that the body,
00:26:08would clearly be,
00:26:09the definitive difference,
00:26:10from an older fighter.
00:26:11He'd be more vulnerable there.
00:26:12The crowd,
00:26:13immediately getting behind,
00:26:14the challenge of Chavez.
00:26:19A wild right hand,
00:26:20missing, by Chavez.
00:26:21A lot of people thought,
00:26:22that after the Willie Wise,
00:26:23the pathetic performance,
00:26:24against Willie Wise,
00:26:25that Chavez,
00:26:26should be 100 to 100,
00:26:27and that's really not the case.
00:26:28He didn't train for that fight,
00:26:29I know that,
00:26:30and I knew he would come here,
00:26:31if he's gonna go out,
00:26:32he would probably,
00:26:33like to go out on his shield,
00:26:34but Yellenhaal Gonzalez did,
00:26:35I don't know if Chavez can.
00:26:37Straight right hand,
00:26:38that nailed,
00:26:39Kostya Zu,
00:26:40left side.
00:26:42There's a good straight right,
00:26:43by Kostya Zu,
00:26:44right on the head of Chavez.
00:26:50Let's see if Zu,
00:26:51says what,
00:26:52does what he said he'll do,
00:26:53and go to the body.
00:26:56Chavez was always deceivingly strong,
00:26:58as he would come in,
00:26:59he would deflect punches,
00:27:00and dig in with heavy hands,
00:27:01to his fighters,
00:27:02his opponent's bodies,
00:27:03and chins.
00:27:04Now, it's a reverse situation,
00:27:05to a degree.
00:27:09Those debilitating,
00:27:10left hooks to the liver,
00:27:11by Chavez.
00:27:14That's vintage Chavez.
00:27:18Couple seconds, round one.
00:27:20Little pressure there,
00:27:21by Zu,
00:27:22but then he lets up.
00:27:25Left hand,
00:27:26that caught Zu,
00:27:27on the,
00:27:28front of the face.
00:27:32Every little thing,
00:27:33that Chavez does,
00:27:34will get a reaction,
00:27:35from the crowd.
00:27:36Even if,
00:27:37just a grazing blow.
00:27:49Our interpreter,
00:27:50is Jean Rolland.
00:27:51When we get into,
00:27:53the Chavez corner.
00:27:54.
00:27:56.
00:27:57.
00:27:58.
00:28:00.
00:28:01.
00:28:03.
00:28:06.
00:28:07.
00:28:09.
00:28:13.
00:28:14.
00:28:16Throw the jab, throw the jab, get in there, throw the jab, move around.
00:28:25Okay, vamo'lo, vamo'lo.
00:28:34Romulo Cuartney in the corner.
00:28:36Zou said, I know Chavez trained hard for this, he's ready.
00:28:39Zou watched a lot of tapes of Vintage Chavez versus Roger Mayweather versus De La Hoya to see the difference.
00:28:49Zou says he's ready, he trained 172 rounds against Mexicans middleweights and super middleweights.
00:28:56Well, I'll tell you what, I use the Rosario tape too, because that's what Chavez didn't need to do.
00:28:59Go back to Vintage Chavez.
00:29:01Zou prepared for the right Chavez, although that one may not be able to show up.
00:29:05And Zou an intelligent fighter.
00:29:09He's trying to set up the right with the left jab, Zou.
00:29:14Zou an intelligent nice right hand off to Temple of Chavez.
00:29:18Chavez coming on the inside, will get a little dirty.
00:29:21He'll give you a forearm, a little shoulder.
00:29:23He knows the tricks and trade, been around far too long.
00:29:30Zou continues to stick the jab.
00:29:35Let's see if he can follow it up with the right.
00:29:39Zou, Zou, Zou, Zou.
00:29:41Hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it, hold it.
00:29:43Zou, Zou, Zou, Zou, Zou, Zou, Zou.
00:29:48The crowd certainly seemed happy with the results from round one.
00:29:53Chavez landed a couple of glancing blows.
00:29:58Nothing great.
00:29:59The more solid punches were landed by Zou.
00:30:01The constant jabbing here by Zou.
00:30:03Chavez looking for one or two big shots, but he doesn't have what he wants had.
00:30:07He needs to work.
00:30:08Nice left hook by Zou.
00:30:18See how old Zou is the effective aggressor.
00:30:21Chavez not being effective on the retreat.
00:30:23He cannot fight going backwards, Steve.
00:30:25And the referee, Bobby Ferreira, out of Tucson quickly getting in because he knows the history of cutting by Chavez.
00:30:32Every time those heads come together, Ferreira tries to get in quickly.
00:30:40You hate to see this thing end in that fashion with an accidental headbutt.
00:30:44Good step left jab there by Chavez.
00:30:47Last corner said when the jab jab his way in.
00:30:50A few times he's leaping in with the hook to the body or the hook to the head.
00:30:53He needs to work in behind the jab.
00:30:54Mexico! Mexico! Mexico! Mexico!
00:30:57The chance of Mexico! Mexico! Mexico! Mexico! Mexico! Mexico!
00:31:04Good jab in the head, Costa.
00:31:07Come on, break it up. Come on.
00:31:09We approach the final 20 seconds of round two.
00:31:17Chavez off balance.
00:31:21That punch was blocked by Zou.
00:31:24Here's a good straight left jab again by Chavez.
00:31:28So far, Chavez has had one right hand in the first round.
00:31:31All right now, the jab has been his most effective weapon, yet he's not using it that much.
00:31:34Again, every time Chavez throws anything, the crowd goes wild.
00:31:39And that's his spectator, as far as Zou, the father of Casio, who worked in the Russian steel mills for over three decades,
00:31:47and came to Australia with his son and the rest of the family.
00:31:50Good day, Alex.
00:31:52Good brother, brother.
00:31:57Good brother, brother.
00:31:58Good brother, brother.
00:31:59Good brother, brother.
00:32:00Good brother, brother.
00:32:01Chavez doing one of those things he does.
00:32:03As they get inside, you'll see that little elbow.
00:32:06He likes to throw the elbows.
00:32:07He likes to throw the forearms.
00:32:08He'll stick them in there.
00:32:10There it is.
00:32:11A little push in the face.
00:32:12A little forearm with the glove lacing.
00:32:14Chavez will do what he can.
00:32:16There you see a little head action and a little hitting.
00:32:25Eh, not really that illegal with the jaw there, but that head.
00:32:28You can see him dragging it across Casio's face, getting sneaky.
00:32:31Zou told us if things do get out of hand and Chavez starts pulling that crazy stuff.
00:32:37He said, I'm a clean fighter.
00:32:38I'll ignore it.
00:32:39I'll be smart.
00:32:40I follow the rules.
00:32:41That's the problem with boxing.
00:32:42Too many guys break the rules.
00:32:44Kostya Zou.
00:32:46Chavez is coming forward in this round.
00:32:49Made a point of coming out and coming forward.
00:32:51Let's see if he can keep it up.
00:32:52Hold it! Hold it! Hold it!
00:32:53Being picked up there by Kostya.
00:32:54Come on!
00:32:55Chavez in the pass able to take off a round from time to time.
00:33:00But with Zou, that's not gonna happen.
00:33:02He can't afford to do that because of the pressure that Zou puts on.
00:33:11And you wonder if Chavez at 38 and all the ring wars and all the vows can hang in.
00:33:20You see Chavez too getting a little anxious to get inside, leaping in, jumping in, trying to crowd Zou like he is there.
00:33:25Hold it! Hold it! Hold it!
00:33:27He does not want to be in the tail end of Zou's punches from the outside of Zou.
00:33:30A much better power ratio.
00:33:32Zou is starting to connect more with that left uppercut for the body.
00:33:35He's starting to get through and take its toll on Chavez.
00:33:38Now a right-left combination to the head by Zou.
00:33:43Zou is starting to land with more regular head-left up to hook up the top of Chavez's head.
00:33:48Zou! Zou! Zou! Zou! Zou!
00:33:51Over a hand-right but a bracing throw by Chavez.
00:33:54Down is also leading with his head quite a bit, Steve.
00:33:56Hold it! Hold it! Watch it, Julio! Look back in here!
00:33:59Watch those rabbit punches as referee Bobby Ferreira and Chavez hitting on the back of the head.
00:34:04I think that might be the first time I've ever seen Chavez apologize for something.
00:34:07Back in the head, Julio!
00:34:08I mean, Chavez!
00:34:09I'm in shock.
00:34:14Chavez has been down only once in his career.
00:34:16That was in the first fight with Frankie Randall.
00:34:19His first defeat after 87 straight wins.
00:34:23His first on-the-record defeat. I thought Burnover Whitaker clearly beat him.
00:34:26It was called a draw, but most people thought Whitaker won.
00:34:31That was at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio.
00:34:33Chavez just complained about a head-break too.
00:34:35And he's the one coming in with his head down.
00:34:37I don't know what he's complaining about.
00:34:42Halt! Halt! Halt! Halt!
00:34:44Halt!
00:34:49Oh, low blow with the left hand by Chavez.
00:34:51Chavez hitting very low.
00:34:52First warning, low blow!
00:34:53Way south of the border.
00:34:54You got me?
00:34:55Chavez looks exhausted.
00:34:56You okay?
00:34:57You okay?
00:34:58You okay?
00:34:59He looks very fatigued.
00:35:00Okay, first warning.
00:35:03And that could really become a factor here.
00:35:05It's extremely hot.
00:35:07He may not...
00:35:08He's not in the kind of shape he would be as vintage Chavez naturally.
00:35:13Keep him up!
00:35:14The factor is a weight also.
00:35:16See how easily Sue just pushes him off.
00:35:18Well, he's used to fighting at a higher weight.
00:35:20He had to come down to 140.
00:35:21He hasn't been a 140 since March of 98 against Miguel Angel Gonzalez.
00:35:28And that's gotta be effective.
00:35:34He doesn't look as strong as we've seen in the past.
00:35:38Oh, he's just pushed into the ropes!
00:35:41Wow!
00:35:47Let's bring Zap Giuda in right now, the IBF Junior Weatherway Champion.
00:35:51What do you think so far through the first part of the fight?
00:35:53I don't know, Steve.
00:35:55I see Chavez on the weekend right now.
00:35:57You know, earlier, both of the guys came at each other strong and competitive,
00:36:01but, um, Construzou looks like he's, um, like he's kicking up now.
00:36:04You know?
00:36:05No, he's got to use in a jab, so that's for making the fight so hard.
00:36:08If he got to the box, it would be a much more easier fight.
00:36:11Do you think that, uh, Chavez seems very tired right now?
00:36:16Very, very, very.
00:36:17He looks very fatigued, and he looks like he's almost out of it.
00:36:19You know, if Construzou double up on a jab, bring that right hand,
00:36:22I think it'd be a short night.
00:36:24All right, the words of Zap Giuda, who could wind up facing Construzou in the near future.
00:36:34Johnny Lewis, who trained former world champion Jeff Fenwick.
00:36:41And Chavez with a very worried look on his face as we enter round number four.
00:36:46Steve, I agree with Zap Giuda, double jab and a right hand,
00:36:49and maybe even another jab right hand behind that,
00:36:51and I think that we have a much shorter night than we're in for at this pace.
00:36:57Zou going with the jab.
00:37:01Chavez is not a mover.
00:37:02He doesn't have the legs at his age, and he never had that type of style.
00:37:05To make that type of adjustment and boxing the outside for 12 rounds
00:37:08against this strong, young champion is not possible.
00:37:12And Zou looking very confident right now.
00:37:14Just walked into a straight left, but he's got a good chin.
00:37:17He goes flying down to Zou.
00:37:19Over the head of Zou.
00:37:21And Zou getting it from referee Bobby Ferreira and the crowd.
00:37:24Come on.
00:37:25Do you think that was intentional?
00:37:26No, it really wasn't.
00:37:27Chavez kind of lunged at him, and they got stuck,
00:37:30and all Zou did was actually spin.
00:37:32But, you know, maybe there was a little spin with the intention to floor.
00:37:36Man.
00:37:40Chavez going flying, whirling to the canvas.
00:37:50That left jab by Zou continues to be effective.
00:37:54Very annoying.
00:37:56Again, Chavez going lung.
00:37:58How much?
00:37:59A couple of fights ago, we saw Kasia Zou systematically break down, destroy a younger, stronger,
00:38:04Miguel and Hel Gonzalez.
00:38:05I think we're in store for something similar here tonight.
00:38:07That was a punishing fight.
00:38:09He's slowly, round by round, picking up the pace, picking up the pressure,
00:38:12throwing more punches, reaching the body and the chin.
00:38:14Right now, Zou is fighting like Chavez used to fight.
00:38:18Exactly.
00:38:19Search and destroy, head and body, accumulation factor.
00:38:22Yep.
00:38:26And it continues here in round four for Zou.
00:38:29Zou in control.
00:38:37The crowd trying to urge Chavez on, but it's not helping.
00:38:41All right, hold it.
00:38:42Hold it.
00:38:43Hold it.
00:38:44Come on.
00:38:45Chavez is also a master at tying people up.
00:38:46He ties you up when Zou gets any inside.
00:38:48Zou doesn't have room to move those arms.
00:38:50And a nifty sequence there by Kasia Zou, the champion.
00:38:59Big right hand.
00:39:00Two of them.
00:39:01That hurt Chavez.
00:39:03Zou landing repeatedly with the right here in round four.
00:39:06Right hand to the body, Steve, right here.
00:39:07Right down the middle might be perfect for Kasia Zou.
00:39:10But as we talked about, he's not seeing him making the adjustments immediately.
00:39:13Second warning.
00:39:14Low floor.
00:39:15Second warning.
00:39:16Second warning.
00:39:17Second warning from Bobby Ferreira.
00:39:20One more.
00:39:21He'll get a point taken away.
00:39:23Zou picking up the pace.
00:39:25Come on, get out.
00:39:26Come on, get out.
00:39:27Come on, get out.
00:39:28Come on, get out.
00:39:40It must be so frustrating for a fighter.
00:39:41As great as he used to be, could not be able to do what he knows his mind wants his body to do.
00:39:46The Tommy and reflexes just not there.
00:40:04It has two warnings to low blow.
00:40:06It must be.
00:40:07It must be.
00:40:08It must be.
00:40:09It must be.
00:40:10It must be.
00:40:11It must be.
00:40:12It must be.
00:40:13It must be.
00:40:14It must be.
00:40:15It must be.
00:40:16It must be.
00:40:17It must be.
00:40:18It must be.
00:40:19It must be.
00:40:20Take a look at the slip slash fling to the floor.
00:40:22Chavez comes in and you'll see Kasia Zou.
00:40:26They kind of lean into each other.
00:40:27And as Kasia spins, Chavez is hooked, trips over his leg.
00:40:31It wasn't a vicious, deliberate swing though.
00:40:33Kasia Zou later on landing some combinations.
00:40:35Keeping the pressure on him.
00:40:36Let's go.
00:40:37Keeping Chavez back to the ropes.
00:40:38Working the body.
00:40:39Working the head.
00:40:40Stuffing the jab.
00:40:41Just making him pay physically as often as possible.
00:40:44And wrestling a takedown is worth two points here.
00:40:46It almost cost Kasia Zou one.
00:40:53Zou told us he threw more body shots, but he's still doing headhunting.
00:40:57In round 40, 45 body shots, four of them landed.
00:41:02It's round five.
00:41:03Chavez looking like he's looking at a little bit of a hangout now.
00:41:06Is it all or nothing?
00:41:10That's a push.
00:41:11Not a knockdown.
00:41:20Chavez usually has the leverage on most of his fighters.
00:41:22Physically stronger, heavier hands.
00:41:24This time the situation is completely reversed.
00:41:27Yeah, one of the few times in the history of Julio Cesar Chavez,
00:41:30he's actually in the ring with somebody stronger than him.
00:41:43How frustrating this must be to Chavez.
00:41:45Come on, get back.
00:41:46That was the third one by Chavez, but Ferraro and the referee looked at him, shook his head.
00:42:03He knew.
00:42:04He knew.
00:42:05He let it go.
00:42:06He let it go.
00:42:07Take out of town.
00:42:08Covering the head of Chavez.
00:42:09Digging to the rim.
00:42:10Wicked left hook.
00:42:11Watch the right hand.
00:42:12It's on its way.
00:42:13Two having his way now.
00:42:14No answers.
00:42:15No replies from Chavez.
00:42:16Chavez's balance is so important because he's squared up.
00:42:17He's a bigger target.
00:42:18Everything is wrong.
00:42:19It's just fatigue.
00:42:20And his brain not being able to translate to his body what it needs to do.
00:42:22And his body on top of that, can't do it.
00:42:23And, as you said, he just doesn't find well going backwards.
00:42:38And the aggressive straight-ahead stab that Koskizou is making him do it a lot.
00:42:46jazoo is making him do it a lot oh what's what's the back of the head i saw that now he
00:42:53accustomed to cost jazoo for hitting on the back of chavez head now there's trying left
00:42:58hooks doubling up but getting nowhere they're blocked
00:43:03but straight right there chavez is just missing so much in the way of speed and tenacity i don't
00:43:09know how to train for this fight but he doesn't even seem to be able for a lot of punches and
00:43:13he's walking in with no defensive i mean he just woke you in his face hanging out there
00:43:18no defensive skills left combinations to the head by cost jazoo landing repeatedly
00:43:29zoo with the uppercut there we haven't seen much of that is another uppercut to the body
00:43:33with the left straight right now by costia zoo what a round for zoo
00:43:39zoo in dominant fashion
00:43:53let's go let's go
00:44:15we can't prepare let's do it let's do it another local actually does show up here goes chavez
00:44:19underneath there's the right uppercut and the left as a combination the south of the border
00:44:24the referee sort of let that one slide a little later on chavez eating the jab and a right hand
00:44:29right down the pipe the same type of right hand that frankie raynell used to drop chavez
00:44:34left uppercut zoo hitting with everything chavez's defensive reflexes as well as his offensive
00:44:40reflexes are no longer what they need to be to even be competitive
00:44:43a small cut is open on the far ahead of chavez
00:44:54round six
00:45:01chavez forcing the attack back up and time called by bobby ferrera and he's taking a
00:45:08point one point i wasn't sure what he did from chavez one point low blow it's actually the fourth
00:45:15one but he'll count as the third gotta stop it
00:45:19time in and he tells chavez to stop it chavez does understand some english
00:45:25sure he understood that
00:45:27for the second time in his career and again the right hand he's showing that susceptibility
00:45:32five six zoo is a much better punch than frankie randall even though frankie randall is a sharp
00:45:37puncher zoo has heavy hands all right he's short all right come on
00:45:4625 seconds into round six came the knockdown chavez's corner is up and standing on the apron asking him
00:45:52do you want to continue do you want to continue is that enough but you want to keep going big
00:45:56factor here a long way to go last six over two minutes
00:46:02well you'll see what kind of warrior he really is now
00:46:06chavez hanging tough he's getting ready to run on his shield and he is this way
00:46:12got just in with a smile
00:46:18all two
00:46:19but it's chavez coming forward but it's so scoring another straight line right now
00:46:30all over chavez
00:46:32steps in and stops the fight it's all over costia zoo wins it tko
00:46:40round six
00:46:41people started throwing things already it's getting a little lucky now and they're protecting
00:46:50costia zoo from the center of the ring and things are flying down towards us
00:46:55and our stage manager joel farbstein just got nailed to the head you all right he's all right
00:47:03things getting really out of hand now the fans are very upset
00:47:07well we have mexico city or phoenix well the fans extremely upset
00:47:13at the uh the way things ended here the referee stopping the fight but justifiably there's no
00:47:18question about that because chavez was getting pummeled bobby what did he have to do die unbelievable
00:47:23the mexican fans are showing that they have absolutely no care for a fighter now i thought
00:47:27they were they cheer him up and now they want to die before he loses well i thought they were a little
00:47:31more sophisticated than that apparently some of them are not i do believe most of them are but
00:47:39there's always a few bad eggs in the crowd so costia zoo wins it in convincing fashion and hopefully
00:47:48finally puts an end to the career the illustrious career of julio cesar chavez
00:47:54that was a shout out steve and every round was being banked banked banked and this round with the
00:48:00point off as well as the knockdown it was a minimum of 10-7 on its way to being 10-6 or clearly a
00:48:06stoppage which we had well chavez clearly okay now after the uh decisive victory by costia zoo i would
00:48:15like to see jose suman justify that as being their number one contender i don't care what he accomplished
00:48:20in his past that was detrimental possibly to his health all he could have gotten there was hurt sure
00:48:24he got a payday but at what risk i think it was all done for political reasons as you pointed out
00:48:31there was an agenda he's not ranked by any other major boxing organization only the wbc and incredibly
00:48:40number one
00:48:49hey come on forget that we're out of here let's listen as a point is deducted from chavez
00:48:57stop stop stop stop hold it back up time one point low blow that was actually the fourth low blow
00:49:09one point but here comes the end the conclusion perhaps to a career it's a nice clean right hand
00:49:17right in the temple eye area and chavez falls face first this thing in boxing usually when they fall
00:49:22face first you don't have to count he got up but he was not in it he was not ready to continue
00:49:27you could see he was hurt he's shaking his head he's staring i believe he's more humiliated than hurt
00:49:39but both pertained
00:49:46so one official knock down chavez down for only the second time in his career the first time was back in
00:49:531994 against frankie randall let's get it up to jimmy lennon jr for the official time ladies and gentlemen
00:49:59we have the time of one minute 30 seconds in round number six a referee in charge bobby ferrara
00:50:06stops the contest at the same time the corner steps in the winner by way of technical knockout and still
00:50:13the wbc super lightweight champion of the world costia so no surprise costia zoo who headed for the
00:50:28dressing room quickly ladies and gentlemen wbc super lightweight title at the expense of julio
00:50:33cesar chavez let's get it up to jim gray all right thank you very much julio cesar chavez still in the
00:50:40ring with us here johnny will interpret julio are you okay how about his performance not many people
00:50:58thought he would be able to go for as long as he went is he upset or how does he feel about his
00:51:06performance i gave the best that i could but my body didn't have the strength is it difficult for
00:51:18him at this time because he was unable to respond the way he has for so many years in the ring
00:51:25yes this is very true forgive me frustrating i want to say i'm sorry to all the latin people
00:51:40julio you have been a tremendous champion
00:51:44it looks like it's the time for me to retire is that definite will you retire or will you attempt
00:51:49this again princesses definitely i feel uh it's time for me to retire i just i didn't have a problem
00:52:12making the way that just i think it's time for me to leave julio congratulations you have been a
00:52:16tremendous champion it's all right i love you man i love you okay steve thank you thank you very much
00:52:25jim well you heard it julio cesar chavez said he will retire let's hope he uh sticks sticks to his word
00:52:34let's check out the online scoring results and uh again no surprise the fans at home seeing it the way
00:52:39we saw it here at ringside cost you zoo with the shutout over julio cesar chavez we're back here
00:52:46with the uh the ibf junior weatherweight champion zav judah the southpaw from brooklyn and boy that had to
00:52:52be a frustrating uh situation for julio cesar chavez but uh let's get your impressions of what you just
00:52:58saw is that i mean uh that was that was a disgrace to boxing uh i feel like chavez should never been in
00:53:03there in the first place you know uh he was a man i was washed up a couple of fights ago on this fight
00:53:08i don't know how he was ranked number one number one contender for this fight you know this is
00:53:13this goes back to the to the uh to the ibf and the wbc and the wba how the rankings go now you know
00:53:18this is crazy well that's what we've been saying all along are you uh somewhat saddened though by the
00:53:23way chavez goes out i mean you know from me being a kid and watching and watching chavez fight all
00:53:29all the great fighters and then to watch him now fight a fight a a a a strong cost of zoo and see him get
00:53:34demolished like that that's that was that was that was horrible yeah that was bad do you take anything
00:53:39away from that do you learn anything perhaps down the road you got a long way to go before you uh call
00:53:43it quits will will something like this being this close to something like that say to yourself i'm not
00:53:50going to let this happen to me when that day comes of course you know when it's my time i got my father
00:53:55there you know i'm saying and he's 100 behind in my in my corner so he's going to be able to say zav
00:54:00it's enough we had we had enough we had a beautiful career and let's step it out and have an you know
00:54:05and have an and have another life after boxing did you take anything away from this fight sab in terms
00:54:09of uh costa zoo did you learn anything that you might be able to store away and use if you ever
00:54:16fight him of course you know i mean i mean i take no credit away from costa zoo me because who came in
00:54:20there and did what he was supposed to do he had a wash up chopper in front of him and he went there and
00:54:23took him out like he was supposed to you know it's not his fault but at the same time i see a lot of
00:54:28holes into casa zoo you know i'm saying he's a fighter that doesn't use his jab he walks in on
00:54:32power a lot you know a fighter such as myself that uses good defense and quick combinations with with
00:54:38devastating power will get the job done for sure next saturday night here on showtime you face former
00:54:44champion teron malet he's going to be sky high highly motivated he wants to win his old title back
00:54:50he didn't lose the title of the ring he was stripped because of an injury uh your final thoughts
00:54:55before that fight my thing is this don't talk about it be about it you know zap judah's prepared
00:55:00i'm i'm ready i had a beautiful camp me my father and my team west palm beach florida all my spawn
00:55:05partners and um sean um teron malet boy you got problems watch i'm gonna bring it to you all right
00:55:10sab we appreciate your time uh i'm from brooklyn too so i know what you're talking about that's right
00:55:15baby bobby bobby chez uh what do you think about next week zap judah and teron malet no i think it's a
00:55:20terrific fight it's night it's right close to new jersey i have a ton of people coming up
00:55:23they're waiting for the fight it's anxious it's a mouth-watering type of fight and what do you think
00:55:27about what you just saw some some final thoughts on julio cesar chavez i don't think the wbc has
00:55:33a leg to stand on putting chavez as the number one contender giving him a token going out present
00:55:37and another title shot that's not inexcusable in and of itself but the number one ranking out of
00:55:42like i think it was pathetic last time i felt this bad was when i watched shigaray leonard get beat
00:55:46by terry norris but shigaray leonard is a nice guy i don't like lucio chavez personally because
00:55:51always been disrespectful so it wasn't his heart wrenching but as a former fighter this breaks my
00:55:55heart that's an interesting uh thing to say i've never heard you say that about a fighter on the
00:56:02air you actually don't respect him uh personally from a personal standpoint personally he's been
00:56:06disrespectful over the past eight years not just to me but to you to us to our interviews he's never
00:56:10granted us an interview he's been disrespectful to fighters that beat him he said that pernell
00:56:14whitaker didn't fight him pernell whitaker beat him frankie randall didn't beat him it was a joke
00:56:18i don't like the way he takes his defeat he goes out great when he's winning when he's losing he
00:56:22doesn't go out so well this is the nicest he's ever gone out well he's he's going out right now let's
00:56:27hope it's for the final time for his own health and his own good well in a time when fighters retire
00:56:33and un-retire almost regularly we now wonder if julio cesar chavez has indeed said his final goodbye to
00:56:39boxing despite the hot debate going into tonight's fight there's no doubt that his remarkable career which
00:56:45has spanned some 20 years will eventually earn him a spot alongside other legends in boxing hall hall
00:56:50of fame here's how we choose to remember him introducing the six-time world champion in three-way
00:56:59divisions
00:57:05oh
00:57:11oh
00:57:13oh
00:57:19oh
00:57:23oh
00:57:25oh
00:57:29Julio Cesar Chavez, unquestionably one of boxing's all-time greats, unfortunately.
00:57:56He's been involved in a sport that can be very cruel if you overstay.
00:58:00You're welcome.
00:58:02The man who dethroned Julio.
00:58:04Let's go to Jim Gray with Kostya Zou.
00:58:07All right. Thank you very much, Steve.
00:58:09Kostya, is it difficult to fight a legend, particularly a man who's passed his prime?
00:58:14It's not difficult. It's exciting.
00:58:17And I have a big honor to fight against this guy.
00:58:21I remember myself in amateur days when I was a kid, and he was already world champion.
00:58:25I mean, I never thought really that I will fight him.
00:58:30But we come together. He challenged my title.
00:58:33And I really enjoyed the fight today because I think I've done a good job.
00:58:39Good job. I won all rounds in my scorecards.
00:58:43In my view, I just enjoyed it.
00:58:47I mean, some of the...
00:58:48Did you see a little bit more game than you might have expected, though, than you might have expected?
00:58:51Yeah, of course.
00:58:52One of the things is I expected him to throw wild punches.
00:58:55That's what he always do.
00:58:57And I just blocked them easy.
00:58:59I mean, you have to miss some time.
00:59:02You have to get the punch some time.
00:59:04But look, I'm clean face. It's clean.
00:59:07He gave me a few times on the balls.
00:59:09He hit me a few times...
00:59:12Polite way of saying it. I guess not so polite, huh?
00:59:14I think it's polite.
00:59:16Because they're still alright.
00:59:17Let me ask you. In the fifth round, you knocked him down.
00:59:20It's only the second time he has been off his feet in his entire career.
00:59:23Frankie Randall was the other time.
00:59:26Tell us about that shot.
00:59:27You know that it wasn't my strongest punch.
00:59:30It's just very accurate and the right timing.
00:59:33Just in the right place.
00:59:35He opened. Boom. It's gone.
00:59:37And sometimes I throw a much harder punch.
00:59:39But he was...
00:59:41Because he would expect them.
00:59:43But some punch he did not expect.
00:59:45That's the idea. Boom. It's gone.
00:59:47Castor, what's next for you?
00:59:49Go home first. Relax.
00:59:51That's what I always do.
00:59:52See my family.
00:59:53I've got Olympic Games very soon.
00:59:56Which I want to really be involved with.
00:59:58With the Russian team.
01:00:00With the Australian team, of course.
01:00:02Where I am the son of that country already.
01:00:05And really exciting.
01:00:07I want to say a few words in Russian, if you don't mind.
01:00:10To my Russian fans.
01:00:11As long as you're interpreting for it.
01:00:13I will try.
01:00:14Okay.
01:00:15And you're saying?
01:00:16One second.
01:00:17I will tell you.
01:00:18You're getting far away though.
01:00:19We can't go that long, our audience.
01:00:20The attention span isn't always that great.
01:00:21I want to say hello to all fans.
01:00:22Friends from Russia who watch me.
01:00:23And we've done a good job.
01:00:24Well, you just said it.
01:00:25What next after Sydney then?
01:00:26After you watch the Olympics and help the Russians.
01:00:27What will you do next in terms of going in the ring?
01:00:29And Australia as well.
01:00:30Of course, I want to fight this year.
01:00:31What's going to be?
01:00:32Wherever it's going to be.
01:00:33Wherever it's going to be.
01:00:34Wherever it's going to be.
01:00:35I'm happy to you.
01:00:36Everything will come well.
01:00:37Unify the title.
01:00:38Start with any of the great boxes in my division.
01:00:39And I believe we have the most probably interesting division right now in 140 pounds and the
01:00:41team.
01:00:42Yeah.
01:00:43Why do you do that?
01:00:44Well, you just said it.
01:00:45What next after Sydney then?
01:00:46After you watch the Olympics and help the Russians, what will you do next in terms of going in
01:00:47the ring?
01:00:48In Australia as well.
01:00:49Of course, I want to fight this year.
01:00:52What's going to be.
01:00:53Wherever, wherever it's going to be.
01:00:54I'm happy to you.
01:00:55Everything will come well.
01:00:57Unify the title.
01:00:58Start with any of the great boxes in my division.
01:01:01And I believe we have the most probably interesting division right now in 140 pounds and many different styles of good boxing, three of them, which I like to fight.
01:01:16And look, one day, one day, I'm happy if you got negotiation come well, we will put fight on, and people want this fight, we will put this fight on.
01:01:24Congratulations, Steve.
01:01:25Thank you very much.
01:01:26All right, Steve, back out to you.
01:01:27All right, Jim, thank you very much about the only thing left to say for me right now is that let's hope that Julio Cesar Chavez hangs up the gloves, moves on with his life while he still has one.
01:01:38Well, Steve, I'll tell you, my sadness is immeasurable tonight, not for Julio Cesar Chavez as an individual, but for the state of boxing and what we had to do here and what we had to show the American public.
01:01:48Their impressions of boxing is already tainted now even more.
01:01:52With that, a final look at tonight's results here from Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.
01:01:59Well, we thought it was going to be macho time, but it was boring time.
01:02:0421-year-old Hector Camacho Jr. remained undefeated, maintained his number one status at 140 in a very uneventful victory over Philip Holliday.
01:02:13And no surprise, as Kostia Zou did what he was supposed to do in defending his title and hopefully bringing an end to the fabled career of Mexican icon Julio Cesar Chavez.
01:02:22For sure, he did say he's going to retire.
01:02:24Let's hope he stands by his words.
