00:01:33Tonight, former undisputed
00:02:02heavyweight champion Mike Tyson
00:02:03launches his British invasion
00:02:05and latest chapter in his
00:02:06on-again, off-again bid to
00:02:08recapture the heavyweight crown.
00:02:10He has already won twice.
00:02:12This time it takes place not
00:02:13under the neon lights of Las
00:02:15Vegas or the salty air of
00:02:16Atlantic City, but right in the
00:02:18heart of England, the city of
00:02:19Manchester, perhaps best known
00:02:21for its storied soccer team,
00:02:23Manchester United.
00:02:24Seems like the whole town has
00:02:26united to catch Tyson's European
00:02:27debut and his first fight outside
00:02:30the United States since he was
00:02:31knocked out by 42-1 underdog
00:02:33Buster Douglas in Tokyo exactly
00:02:3510 years ago to the week.
00:02:37This blue-collar city is abuzz and
00:02:40the MEN Arena is the center of
00:02:42attention.
00:02:43Let's run down tonight's
00:02:45doubleheader from Manchester.
00:02:47In our main event, it'll be Mike
00:02:49Tyson versus relatively unknown
00:02:51homegrown product Julius Francis,
00:02:54the reigning British heavyweight
00:02:55champion in a non-title fight that
00:02:58has all the trappings of a
00:03:00championship affair.
00:03:02In addition, you'll see the
00:03:04American debut of WBO Super
00:03:06Metalweight champion Joe
00:03:07Calzaghe, the undefeated southpaw
00:03:09from Wales, as he defends his title
00:03:12against number seven contender
00:03:14David Stare of England.
00:03:16Well, it's been a controversial, chaotic,
00:03:21extraordinary trip to England for
00:03:22Mike Tyson, who has received the
00:03:24rock star treatment.
00:03:26Anticipation at a peak as we bring
00:03:27you inside to the MEN Arena here
00:03:30in downtown Manchester.
00:03:31MEN stands for Manchester Evening
00:03:33News, the hometown paper.
00:03:35Mike Tyson, unquestionably the
00:03:37hottest ticket in town.
00:03:38This an immediate sellout.
00:03:4022,000 seats scarfed up within hours
00:03:42of the announcement of this event.
00:03:44Tickets ranging from a comparatively
00:03:45reasonable $80 to $750 for ringside.
00:03:49But scalpers are asking about
00:03:514,000 pounds or $6,500 a ticket.
00:03:54The Brits don't seem to mind that
00:03:55age and inactivity may have eroded
00:03:57Tyson's skills.
00:03:58They've put him on a pedestal.
00:03:59Some of the local punters are calling
00:04:01this the biggest boxing spectacle
00:04:03to hit these shores since the then
00:04:05Cassius Clay fought Henry Cooper
00:04:06in 1963.
00:04:08Oh, what a circus, what a show.
00:04:14Mike Tyson has come to town.
00:04:15Hello again, everybody.
00:04:16Steve Albert welcoming you to
00:04:18Manchester.
00:04:18It has been and continues to be an
00:04:20amazing experience from the pubs
00:04:22and clubs to the historic halls of
00:04:24Parliament.
00:04:24Tyson has been a lightning rod.
00:04:26An 11th hour attempt, some say a
00:04:28grandstand effort to keep Tyson out
00:04:30of the country, failed.
00:04:31A law preventing convicted felons from
00:04:33entering the UK was invoked, but
00:04:35Britannia waived the rules and Tyson
00:04:37received what is easily the most
00:04:39overwhelming show of support he has
00:04:40ever had, as thousands of fans
00:04:42followed him through London and
00:04:44Manchester.
00:04:45That aside, it sounds like a broken
00:04:47record, but tonight, Mike Tyson's
00:04:49first fight since another
00:04:50controversial incident, as once again
00:04:52he tries to resurrect his career
00:04:54after the latest in a series of
00:04:56setbacks.
00:04:57His last three fights, there have been
00:04:58four so-called indiscretions.
00:05:00You have to begin with the infamous
00:05:02ear-butting episode against Evander
00:05:04Holyfield, which led to a one-year
00:05:05suspension from boxing.
00:05:07Then, his admission that he tried to
00:05:08break Francois Botha's arm twice, and
00:05:11of course, his most recent return to
00:05:13the ring just over three months ago
00:05:14in Las Vegas.
00:05:15He decked Orland Norris with a punch
00:05:17after the bell, ending the first
00:05:18round.
00:05:19Norris unable to continue because of a
00:05:21twisted knee.
00:05:22The bout ended as a no contest.
00:05:23Following the fight, the Nevada State
00:05:25Athletic Commission, let it be known,
00:05:27it would like to see Tyson fight
00:05:28elsewhere, which brings us to tonight
00:05:30here in noisy Manchester, England.
00:05:34With that, let me bring on my ringside
00:05:36partners.
00:05:36First, the fight, Dr. Ferdi Pacheco.
00:05:38Ferdi, your take on the magnitude of
00:05:40this event for British boxing fans.
00:05:42Well, it's huge here, but you know,
00:05:44it's a great weekend for underdogs.
00:05:46We're going into the Super Bowl.
00:05:47What better underdog than Kurt Warner?
00:05:50Four years ago, he was packing
00:05:52groceries at a supermarket.
00:05:54As my old friend, Fats Waller, used to
00:05:57say, don't nobody ever know, do one.
00:05:59Well, we'll make a deal with Francis
00:06:01after the fight.
00:06:01We'll get him a job packing groceries,
00:06:03okay?
00:06:04All right, on to our other partner here,
00:06:05Bobby Chez.
00:06:06Bobby, in your opinion, what is the
00:06:08current state of the heavyweight
00:06:10division or the fact that Mike Tyson
00:06:11is still a star attraction?
00:06:13Well, Steve, the state of the heavyweight
00:06:14division right now is a very interesting
00:06:15one.
00:06:16There seemed to be some closure after
00:06:17Lennox Lewis, the Vanderhoofille rematch,
00:06:19and we had a so-called undisputed
00:06:21champion crown.
00:06:21I say so-called because there are so many
00:06:23sanctioning bodies and ranking
00:06:24organizations that each has a champion
00:06:26who lays claiming to be the best man.
00:06:28Enter Mike Tyson.
00:06:30Mike Tyson, with his ferocious power
00:06:31and tenacious attack, could on any
00:06:33given day beat any of those champions,
00:06:35as well as a man named Ike Ibiabuchi.
00:06:38Given that, the state of the division
00:06:39is up for grabs.
00:06:40Everyone is positioning to get a shot
00:06:42at the title.
00:06:43All right, Bobby, while some regard
00:06:44Tyson as a morbid curiosity in his
00:06:47declining years, he's obviously still
00:06:49compelling viewing or this place
00:06:50wouldn't be packed.
00:06:51It's become more and more evident
00:06:53that he is the type of person who seems
00:06:55to live only in the moment, which may
00:06:57explain his erratic behavior in and out
00:06:59of the ring.
00:07:00As he prepared for this fight, a
00:07:02philosophical Mike Tyson provided his
00:07:04perspective.
00:07:05I'm a kid from the gutter of New York City.
00:07:15Lowest many people can get in the city
00:07:17of New York.
00:07:17I'm from the gutter.
00:07:18I'm from the, yes, I'm the gummer.
00:07:19I'm the gummer on the bottom of your
00:07:21shoe, where I come from.
00:07:23I'm just somebody that's a god
00:07:27blessed for a few moments, for a few years.
00:07:30It's so ironic.
00:07:37If you're 20 or 18 and you don't, and
00:07:40you're not rebellious, you don't have no gut.
00:07:43And if you're 30 and you're not going with
00:07:45the society, you don't have no brain.
00:07:47I'm never looking for the future or anything.
00:07:55I don't, ever anticipating being an old man
00:07:58with grandkids or something.
00:07:59I know that I'm not going to have a good
00:08:01ending in this society, and I'm willing
00:08:04to accept that.
00:08:07Things happen.
00:08:12What the hell?
00:08:12I hit the guy.
00:08:13It wasn't really a hard punch, but it was a
00:08:15good snappy punch.
00:08:16Once he went down, he got up, he walked to
00:08:17the corner.
00:08:18He didn't want to continue.
00:08:19He wanted to get a free meal, which he did.
00:08:21My suggestion to you is that you pack
00:08:24Mr. Tyson's bags up, and you take this
00:08:27act on the road, and I just, I'm not so
00:08:32sure we need him here in the state of Nevada.
00:08:34I've been through hard deals, hard ordeals
00:08:36in my life, and I'm not going to die.
00:08:39I'm not going to fall to pieces.
00:08:40I'm a man.
00:08:41You know, I'll fight, and I'll continue to
00:08:42fight, but I don't want to fight anymore.
00:08:46And Tyson arriving moments ago.
00:08:52He's been relaxed, talkative, good-humored
00:08:54for the most part, but it was reported
00:08:56that yesterday a visibly upset Tyson bolted
00:08:59from the hotel was driven to the airport,
00:09:01obviously miffed with something, speculation
00:09:03that it concerned his purse reported to be
00:09:05between $8 and $12 million.
00:09:07Promoter Frank Warren, who rarely turns down
00:09:09interviews, would not talk to the media.
00:09:11As it turned out, Tyson returned, appeared
00:09:13at the weigh-in, although he seemed disinterested
00:09:15and unfocused, strangely twirling his hair
00:09:18throughout.
00:09:19So the soap opera adventures of this freak show,
00:09:23as Tyson calls it, had another scare just 24 hours
00:09:26before the fight.
00:09:28And then there's Julius Francis, not exactly a household name
00:09:35outside and inside boxing circles, a total non-entity
00:09:39in the United States, almost anonymous in England
00:09:41before the fight was announced.
00:09:43British newspapers describe him as a former soccer hooligan
00:09:46who served jail time 10 years ago for causing grievous bodily harm.
00:09:50Reportedly, he has been shot and knifed in street fights.
00:09:52He says he's reformed now and chooses not to dwell on the past.
00:09:57Bill Boggs has more on what eternal optimists might call
00:10:00Britain's answer to Rocky.
00:10:03We're in Woolwich, a working-class area of London.
00:10:06Once known for its dockyards, its armories, and its factories,
00:10:10this tough town served as a home for Tyson's opponent,
00:10:13Julius Francis.
00:10:14While boxing fans all over the world believe that Francis
00:10:17has no chance of winning against Mike Tyson,
00:10:19we wanted to talk to the people in his own neighbourhood
00:10:23and find out what they think.
00:10:25He's just going to get smashed and put to the ground, mate.
00:10:27Huh?
00:10:28I wish you the best, Julius.
00:10:30Julius Francis is a dead man.
00:10:32Tyson's going to kick his ass.
00:10:34Clearly there is one citizen of Woolwich
00:10:35who firmly believes in Julius Francis,
00:10:38and that is Julius Francis.
00:10:41Mike Tyson is human, the same like all of us.
00:10:44He bleeds, he feels pain.
00:10:46The same like everybody, two arms, two legs.
00:10:48I'm not just a puff of smoke that go away with,
00:10:51you know what I'm saying, like Scott Smith.
00:10:53You know, I've been in there with the young,
00:10:55talented fighters of this country and beaten them.
00:10:58It's the same, it's like with anything.
00:11:00If you believe that you can do it, you're going to do it.
00:11:02Mike Tyson's going to get beat.
00:11:03Simple as that.
00:11:05Can Julius Francis do it?
00:11:07Can he beat Mike Tyson?
00:11:08Well, just remember the last time Tyson left the country to fight,
00:11:11he faced a 42-to-1 underdog named James Buster Douglas.
00:11:16Good to see you.
00:11:19Earlier, the arrival of former kickboxer Julius Francis talks a good game,
00:11:23but his resume's shaky,
00:11:24particularly when he steps up the quality of opposition.
00:11:27Many here feel he has about as much chance as did Peter McNeely.
00:11:30In fact, Francis himself might have doubts.
00:11:32Not a good sign when you sell advertising space
00:11:35on the bottoms of your boxing shoes.
00:11:37Also, he's undergoing hypnosis,
00:11:38and throughout the press conference,
00:11:40he was listening to music on his headphones,
00:11:41ignoring Tyson, probably to avoid being psyched out.
00:11:45Good news, win, lose, or draw.
00:11:46He gets over a half million dollars.
00:11:48By far, his biggest payday.
00:11:50All he has to do, really, is look good,
00:11:51and he's a hero, but even that might be a stretch.
00:11:56As you look at Julius Francis arriving,
00:11:59we should point out that the reaction in the background
00:12:01is from the undercard.
00:12:02Back here with the fight doctor, Ferdi Pacheco.
00:12:04Ferdi, is there anything that you see in Julius Francis
00:12:08that might indicate that he has any chance whatsoever here tonight?
00:12:12I'd be less than candid if I said I saw anything.
00:12:14I don't see anything, but what I do see,
00:12:16what we have to look for, once again, is the Tyson story.
00:12:20The third comeback of Mike Tyson.
00:12:22Will he look sharp?
00:12:23Will he take him out?
00:12:24Will he let other things distract him?
00:12:26I really don't see any way outside of a lucky punch,
00:12:29which can happen, but as the pundits always say,
00:12:32that's why we play the ballgames, to see.
00:12:34All right, now, as we turn back to Bobby Ches,
00:12:36the last time Mike Tyson fought outside the United States,
00:12:39he was upset by 42-1 underdog Buster Douglas in Tokyo in 1990.
00:12:43Do you see any similarities here tonight?
00:12:46Steve, the only similarities I see here
00:12:48is that the fight is indeed outside the United States
00:12:50and that it is a very, very big underdog.
00:12:52But last time Mike Tyson fought Buster Douglas,
00:12:54he was riding a wave of easy victories,
00:12:56running through the heavyweight division,
00:12:58undefeated with the aura of invincibility.
00:13:00Nothing to prove, maybe got a little lazy,
00:13:02and Buster Douglas took advantage and rose to the occasion.
00:13:05This time, though, he has a lot to prove.
00:13:07He's coming off two losses back-to-back,
00:13:08a one-punch come from behind victory,
00:13:10and then a no-contest due to a foul.
00:13:13He has a lot to prove.
00:13:14He's very focused.
00:13:15And Julius Francis, quite honestly,
00:13:16just never showed me some of the stellar qualities
00:13:18that Buster Douglas had flashes of.
00:13:20So you're saying Francis is not as good
00:13:21or better than Douglas was when he upset Tyson?
00:13:24Even though Douglas was hot and cold all the time, Steve,
00:13:26he had days when he just, he had flashes of brilliance.
00:13:29I have never seen that in all the tapes I've watched of this fighter,
00:13:32and every time he steps up, he has problems.
00:13:34All right.
00:13:34Despite all the hoopla surrounding Mike Tyson here in England,
00:13:37the general consensus is his opponent is another safe tune-up.
00:13:41For more on tonight's men event, let's check in with our Jim Gray.
00:13:44Jim.
00:13:45All right.
00:13:45Thank you very much, Steve.
00:13:46It has been a whirlwind fortnight here in the United Kingdom for Mike Tyson.
00:13:50When Robert Louis Stevenson wrote Dr. Checkl and Mr. Hyde,
00:13:53he certainly didn't have Tyson in mind, but he could have.
00:13:56America had fair warning from Paul Revere,
00:13:59and while no one rode through town to alert the British that Mike Tyson was coming,
00:14:03no one needed to.
00:14:04Everyone already knew.
00:14:05His arrival into this country almost barred.
00:14:08The law was bent to allow him in for humanitarian reasons,
00:14:12not for Tyson's sake, but for the benefit of the local businesses.
00:14:16His two-week stay here has caused chaos and confusion, anger, and adoration.
00:14:20Women's groups protested in England demanding that a convicted rapist not be allowed into the kingdom.
00:14:28Then, when he was permitted, he shouldn't be supported.
00:14:31But the calls for his ouster have been muted by the large crowd
00:14:34in the celebration of, if nothing else, celebrity.
00:14:37For the people of Great Britain seemingly have opened their collective arms to Mike Tyson,
00:14:41forgiving, or at least ignoring, all his past indiscretions.
00:14:4622,000 tickets were sold in a matter of moments.
00:14:49And the crowds to see and hear Tyson gives memory to the way that Muhammad Ali was treated
00:14:55when he came here to fight Henry Cooper back in 1963.
00:14:58So Mike Tyson finds himself in a foreign country with a government
00:15:02who can't wait until he leaves, while many of the people here hope he won't.
00:15:06Asked by officials of the state of Nevada to please find another place to work, he has.
00:15:11And in doing so, he may have pumped life into a floundering, troubled career.
00:15:15By taking his show on the road, a world tour, so to speak,
00:15:18Tyson may find all the comforts abroad that he has lost at home.
00:15:21When Prime Minister Tony Blair commented two weeks ago on Tyson,
00:15:26it showed just how great the magnitude of his appearance here is.
00:15:29The fact that the Prime Minister of England was compelled to comment at all
00:15:33is at the same time amusing and disconcerting.
00:15:36Aren't there more important things in the world?
00:15:38Apparently not.
00:15:40Not here.
00:15:41Not right now.
00:15:41It seems like everything is upside down.
00:15:44Well, then ponder this.
00:15:45Imagine Mike Tyson being rescued by police instead of being apprehended by them.
00:15:50Well, that occurred when Tyson last week, against the advice and the wishes of civic leaders,
00:15:55visited the diverse borough of Brixton.
00:15:57It seems that nothing Mike Tyson does is in moderation,
00:16:00be it buying a million-dollar watch or being watched.
00:16:04But Tyson has responded to the royal treatment royally.
00:16:07He's been on his best behavior.
00:16:08His visit, however, hasn't been without some slips.
00:16:12Extreme in his threats to opponent Juliet Francis,
00:16:14and he also lashed out at some of the women's groups that didn't welcome him.
00:16:18Then yesterday, just on the eve of the fight,
00:16:20when it seemed like there was tranquility within Tyson,
00:16:23he drove to the airport threatening to pull out of the fight before returning to his hotel.
00:16:27But by and large, Tyson, throughout his stay, has been gracious and accommodating.
00:16:32One could say we have seen this act before, and we have.
00:16:34But now that Tyson appears at this time to have worn out his welcome back home,
00:16:39he's trying to resurrect himself outside the United States.
00:16:42And up until now, he has been relatively successful.
00:16:45One of the remaining questions now is,
00:16:47is if this explosion of curiosity can propel Tyson's confidence and aura in the ring,
00:16:53something that has been lacking for years now.
00:16:56I am now joined by Colin Hart.
00:16:58Colin writes for The Sun.
00:16:59He has done so for 30 years.
00:17:01Colin, can you put this into some type of perspective for us?
00:17:04Are you astonished by the reaction of Mike Tyson here?
00:17:06No, I thought it would be big, Jim.
00:17:08I knew he would be big when he arrived.
00:17:10But I never, ever envisaged something quite like this.
00:17:13The coverage has been saturation for three weeks.
00:17:16Headlines every day.
00:17:17Whatever he does, if he walks out of his hotel into the street, it's headlines.
00:17:22If he goes and buys a million-dollar watch, that's obviously headlines.
00:17:25If he takes a trip to the airport, even more headlines.
00:17:28Well, you know, he's a phenomenon in that sector because he's a media magnate.
00:17:32Is this the media creating this, or is this the people of Great Britain?
00:17:36Well, it was whipped up by the media, first of all, because of the protests.
00:17:40And it has snowballed.
00:17:41And, of course, a lot of people are of the opposite opinion.
00:17:44When people say he should not be allowed in, they say,
00:17:47Hey, give this man a break.
00:17:48He served his time.
00:17:50He's been a bad boy.
00:17:51He seems to be behaving.
00:17:53Give him a shot.
00:17:54It's been absolutely a phenomenon, Mike Tyson.
00:17:56You made an interesting comment to me yesterday when you said
00:17:59they haven't hounded anybody like this since Princess Diana,
00:18:03a totally different person, totally unparalleled in what they were.
00:18:07But is that the type of coverage that you've seen?
00:18:08Well, when Muhammad Ali came to fight Henry Coup for the world title in 1966,
00:18:12the media were not camped outside his hotel 24 hours a day.
00:18:17And I mean 24 hours a day because he used to go out in the middle of the night
00:18:21when he was in London to go running in Hyde Park.
00:18:24And when he went, the media followed.
00:18:26And that's been the story ever since he got here.
00:18:29You know, it has been...
00:18:30Nobody wants to take their eyes off him.
00:18:32Do you think that this will continue?
00:18:33Do you think that once he leaves here, the following will continue toward him?
00:18:37That depends what happens against Julius Francis.
00:18:39If he's explosive and he does what everybody thinks he's going to do,
00:18:42and wins by a spectacular knockout, they want to see him back again.
00:18:47And if he comes back to London in the summer, then he'll go open air.
00:18:51And then I think we might even see 70,000, 80,000 people.
00:18:54Truly amazing. Colin, thank you for your words.
00:18:56We appreciate your time.
00:18:56My pleasure.
00:18:58All right, Steve, we send it back over to your ringside.
00:19:00All right, fans, here we go.
00:19:01All right, Jim, thank you.
00:19:07Coming up later here at the MEN Arena in Manchester, Tyson vs. Francis.
00:19:11Despite the lesser credentials of the Englishmen,
00:19:14a pivotal fight in terms of Tyson's future.
00:19:16A solid Valfrey performance would bolster his appeal in Europe
00:19:19and could rocket him back to the even more lucrative world of pay-per-view.
00:19:23A possible Megabuck showdown with Unified champ Lennox Lewis.
00:19:27Stay tuned.
00:19:30Right now, we're standing by for our co-feature from Manchester.
00:19:34Unbeaten Welshman Joe Calzaghi makes his fifth defense of the WBO super middleweight belt
00:19:38against number seven contender David Starry of England.
00:19:42The fighter introductions to be made by our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:19:47Ladies and gentlemen, good evening and welcome to the Manchester Evening News Arena
00:19:55in Manchester, England.
00:19:57We have a big night of action.
00:19:59At this time, we present the WBO super middleweight championship of the world.
00:20:05Prepare to welcome the boxers as they make their way to the ring.
00:20:08First, ladies and gentlemen, here is tonight's challenger
00:20:11and number seven ranked contender, introducing David Starry.
00:20:34Always a theatrical production whenever an English fighter comes in.
00:20:39The challenger, David Starry, current British and Commonwealth super middleweight champ
00:20:43when not boxing a firefighter in rural Bury, St. Edmunds, about 100 miles northeast of London.
00:20:51He has never fought outside of England.
00:20:53Pretty highly regarded here, although his determination to win the title has been questioned.
00:20:58So has his defense, but he's a solid boxer, at times a bit flashy.
00:21:02Good right hand, good chin, down only once in 23 fights.
00:21:07That in his only loss to a man named Dean Francis.
00:21:11He said that was a wake-up call.
00:21:14He has won eight straight since.
00:21:18Starry, an impressive boxer, has good skills being greeted by the crowd here.
00:21:23But is it enough to neutralize Joe Calzaghe's power?
00:21:27We'll find out.
00:21:28Last-second preparations for the challenger, David Starry of England, coming into the theme of Star Wars.
00:21:46We can see Joe Calzaghe departing his dressing room.
00:21:55And we're set to go back to bring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr. to bring Calzaghe into the ring.
00:22:01And now, ladies and gentlemen, making his way to the ring, here is the defending WBO world champion.
00:22:17Introducing Joe Calzaghe.
00:22:20The champion Joe Calzaghe, first American exposure, hasn't fought since June.
00:22:40Beset by injuries, elbow, hand, back, you name it.
00:22:43Supposed to be on the Trinidad De La Hoya card, both the brigs.
00:22:46But Elvis kept popping up, prompting some cynicism here in England.
00:22:50Is he just a lot of hype? Is he ready to prove himself?
00:22:53He's media-savvy, good-looking from the coal mines of Wales.
00:22:57But does he really have what it takes?
00:23:00Basically untested until his shockingly easy win over British favorite Chris Eubank to win the belt in 97.
00:23:08Bobby in a division with nondescript champions.
00:23:11Is Calzaghe, who's an unknown commodity outside England, the premier 168-pound champion today?
00:23:17Well, you know, Steve, he's a very fast south pole with some pretty good boxing skills and power.
00:23:21He's aggressive. He throws a lot of good combinations.
00:23:23Right now, he and Byron Mitchell are probably the top two guys at 168.
00:23:27But this is a division that's dead.
00:23:29It used to be loaded with talent from Nigel Benn and Chris Eubanks,
00:23:31Stevie Collins, Michael Nunn, Frankie Lyles, and Roy Jones Jr.
00:23:34They're both looking to be champions for current fights that have marquee value to see who's the man at 168.
00:23:42Well, he can't afford to slip up tonight as we take a look at the numbers.
00:23:45We go to the tail of the tape.
00:23:47The champion at 27, two years older.
00:23:49Slight one-inch height advantage.
00:23:51Calzaghe, both just under the 168 limit.
00:23:54Fight time.
00:23:55Calzaghe, 176.
00:23:57Starry, 169.
00:23:58They weighed in yesterday.
00:24:00The reach even.
00:24:01Key WBO rules for this championship fight.
00:24:03There's no standing eight count, no three knockdown rule.
00:24:05A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:24:07If an accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth round, it's a technical draw.
00:24:11If it happens after the end of the fourth, they go to the scorecards.
00:24:15So here at the MEN Arena in Manchester, England, getting set for the WBO Super Middleweight Championship.
00:24:21Joe Calzaghe versus David Starry.
00:24:25Joe Calzaghe's toughest defense in his four defenses was a split decision over former champion Robin Reed.
00:24:36Pretty good fighter.
00:24:37We've seen him a couple of times.
00:24:38But this is, without question, Calzaghe's biggest stage, especially if he wants to move up to 175 or light heavyweight with the big carrot dangling there, of course, the one and only Roy Jones Jr.
00:24:53Let's get the formal introductions from our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:25:03Ladies and gentlemen, once again, a very good evening to you.
00:25:07And we welcome you to one of our featured bouts of the evening.
00:25:10And it's all brought to you by Frank Warren Sports Network in association with America Presents and Showtime Championship Boxing as sponsored by the alpha club dot com.
00:25:22This bouts coming away is sanctioned by the World Boxing Organization.
00:25:26The president is Francisco Valcarcel, Supervisor Lord Brooks of Chamorfa, along with the British Boxing Board of Control, the steward in charge, Leonard Nipper Reed, QPM.
00:25:37Introducing to you our three judges scoring this bouts from ringside.
00:25:41From Chicago, Illinois in the United States, Bill Lurch.
00:25:45From San Juan, Puerto Rico, Roberto Ramirez.
00:25:49And from Leeds, England, Mickey Vann.
00:25:53Introducing to you our referee in charge of this bout.
00:25:56He'll be giving instructions after the introductions, John Coyle.
00:26:03All right, fans, here we go.
00:26:05Twelve rounds of boxing for the WBO Super Middleweight Championship of the World.
00:26:12Introducing to you first the challenger on my left, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing black trunks with gold stars, fighting out of and representing his hometown of Bury St. Edmunds, England.
00:26:26He weighed in at 11 stone, 13 and a half pounds, or 167 and one half U.S. pounds.
00:26:33His fine record stands at 22 wins, only one defeat, with 15 wins coming by way of knockout.
00:26:41Here is the British and Commonwealth champion, presently ranked the number seven super middleweight contender by the WBO.
00:26:48Introducing tonight's challenger, David Starry.
00:26:53And his opponent across the ring is the defending world champion on my right, fighting out of the red corner, wearing black trunks with red lettering, hailing from Newbridge, Wales.
00:27:11His weight, 11 stone, 13 and three quarter pounds, 167 and three quarter U.S. pounds.
00:27:18He is undefeated in his campaign in the ring with 27 wins, no losses, 23 wins coming by way of knockout.
00:27:26Tonight making the fifth defense of his title.
00:27:28Please welcome the defending WBO super middleweight champion of the world, the undefeated Joe Kalsange.
00:27:38Once again, a referee in charge, John Coyle, now to the instructions, 12 rounds of championship boxing schedule.
00:27:49Okay, gentlemen, I've spoken to you both.
00:27:51I want the highest standard of professionalism and sportsmanship.
00:27:54Shake hands back to your corners and answer the bell.
00:27:56Good luck.
00:27:57All right.
00:27:57The crowd mixed in terms of support.
00:28:05Starry, a flashy switch hitter who prefers to stay on the outside and utilize his boxing skills, but he doesn't mind going into the trenches and getting down and dirty.
00:28:14He's from England.
00:28:15Seconds out.
00:28:15The champion.
00:28:16Round one.
00:28:17Joe Kalsange, the southpaw.
00:28:18He's a fast starter.
00:28:20Above average hand speed.
00:28:21He's fast.
00:28:22He's slick.
00:28:23He's experienced.
00:28:24The question is, how good is he?
00:28:27Kalsange loves to start fast.
00:28:30That's what he's going to do.
00:28:31He's going to make it a barn burner right from the go.
00:28:33He wants to test Starry's chin as well as his heart.
00:28:37Question is, can Starry take that fast approach?
00:28:40Already he's landed a good right hand there.
00:28:43And is Starry ready for the experienced Kalsange, who said the big difference of this fight will be that he is the heavier puncher.
00:28:51He says, I feel I'm going to knock him out, said Kalsange.
00:28:53He said Starry can't trade with him.
00:28:55Yes, he's got fast hands, he's flashy, but defensively he keeps his hands low, talking about Starry.
00:29:01Kalsange said, I'll pressure Starry.
00:29:04He has to make plans for me, not me for him.
00:29:06In fact, in the interview, I never saw a boxer so confident that he was going to knock somebody out.
00:29:12You know, they always say, well, if a knockout comes, not this guy.
00:29:14He says, I'm going out there and knock him out before five.
00:29:16Definitely.
00:29:17So let's see.
00:29:18He certainly started out that way.
00:29:19Very cool and composed, Joe Kalsange.
00:29:22His opponent, Starry, doesn't feel, though, that Kalsange has one punch KO power.
00:29:27He says it's an accumulative effect.
00:29:29He feels he matches Kalsange in speed.
00:29:31He's superior in the accuracy department.
00:29:34And that Kalsange is vulnerable to the right hand, which is Starry's most effective punch.
00:29:39Well, Starry throws a nice straight right hand, but Kalsange throws a nice straight left hand.
00:29:42They're both reasonably susceptible to the other's best shots.
00:29:45But you know what?
00:29:46I think the difference here might be power.
00:29:48They're comparable in speed.
00:29:49The power may be the difference.
00:29:51Well, that's what Kalsange said.
00:29:52Starry, though, very confident against southpaws.
00:29:55He's never lost a one.
00:29:57Kalsange, not really known as an awkward southpaw, but he's a strong one.
00:30:02Well, the difference in violence is considerable.
00:30:04Like, two to one right now.
00:30:06The Kalsange's come out to do damage.
00:30:08The other guy's trying to figure out what's happening here.
00:30:10Starry down only once in his career against a fighter named Dean Francis.
00:30:16Kalsange's never been down, pro or amateur.
00:30:19You know, it was funny, too, because Starry said that was a wake-up call.
00:30:21Up until that point in time, he thought it was easy and realized,
00:30:23hey, this is a hard business.
00:30:25Yeah, he called it a learning experience.
00:30:28Boxing a little too simple up to that point for Starry.
00:30:31It was a nice straight right hand to the body by Starry.
00:30:33That's what he needs to do to the body and the chin.
00:30:36Yeah, he's punching one at a time, one and out.
00:30:38He is sort of, right now, amazed by what's happening to him.
00:30:42Because this other guy's coming in with a lot of punches.
00:30:44This is Kalsange.
00:30:45Kalsange means to be here for a short period of time.
00:30:49Right!
00:30:50I got him.
00:30:50All shots, all shots.
00:30:53Kalsange adding nine pounds since yesterday's weigh-in.
00:30:56Now, 176, just missed with that combination attempt at Kalsange.
00:31:02And he wants to fight Roy Jones.
00:31:04Whoa, what a mistake that might be.
00:31:06Well, that will be a true test of one's chin, should he decide to do that.
00:31:09Of someone's chin.
00:31:10Yes.
00:31:11That'll be a test of chin, skill, determination, and everything you have.
00:31:14At heart.
00:31:15We'll really find out if he has what it takes.
00:31:19The Peldo in round one.
00:31:25All right?
00:31:26Okay, you're launching for slash two-five outside.
00:31:28All right?
00:31:29You're moving in here.
00:31:30You don't throw them when you're moving in.
00:31:31All right?
00:31:32Okay.
00:31:33You understand?
00:31:34There's water.
00:31:35There's water.
00:31:36Yep.
00:31:36There's water.
00:31:37Okay.
00:31:37Don't even walk there.
00:31:38Don't even walk there.
00:31:38Don't even walk there.
00:31:38Don't even walk there.
00:31:39Don't even walk there.
00:31:40Don't even walk there.
00:31:41Okay?
00:31:41There's a jab when you're going to jump to the shot.
00:31:43All right, Joe?
00:31:43Okay?
00:31:44Listen to me.
00:31:45Don't jab this.
00:31:46Then move in.
00:31:47You're throwing him without throwing a jab.
00:31:49All right?
00:31:50So you're coming short.
00:31:50You're lunging.
00:31:51All right?
00:31:52Okay?
00:31:52If your left hand works, and bang, let it go.
00:31:55All right?
00:31:56Okay?
00:31:57What's happened to you here?
00:31:57Right here?
00:31:58That's a doddle.
00:32:00All right?
00:32:01Yeah.
00:32:02Okay, that's a doddle.
00:32:03Come on.
00:32:04Get your breath going.
00:32:05All right?
00:32:05Speed the left out, shoulder left hand.
00:32:10Corners, ten seconds.
00:32:13Close the time.
00:32:15Seconds out.
00:32:17Round two.
00:32:19Calzaghi's corner would allow us to wear a microphone.
00:32:23Not the case for David Starry.
00:32:25You heard the voice of Joe Calzaghi's father, Enzo, in the corner there.
00:32:29It never ceases to amaze me how certain fighters in fight camps
00:32:32think that we're going to somehow tell the other side what's going on.
00:32:35Yeah.
00:32:36Well, he was getting good advice.
00:32:38Right?
00:32:39Step back and come in with a jab.
00:32:40Hard with a jab.
00:32:41You're not jabbing enough.
00:32:42You mean to say there's paranoia in boxing?
00:32:46Joe Calzaghi's left got through.
00:32:48Starry's defenses a number of times in the opening round, but no real damage done.
00:32:52Starry working hard inside.
00:32:55With no return.
00:32:56Calzaghi.
00:32:57Right.
00:33:02This is the kind of fight Calzaghi wants.
00:33:06He wants to get Starry on the inside.
00:33:09Starry wants to stay on the outside and box.
00:33:11Had a good idea with a right-handed starry, but it didn't land where he wanted it to.
00:33:21He threw it just in count, in counterpart, just at the right time.
00:33:24He landed, but on the shoulder, on the arm.
00:33:26Didn't do anything.
00:33:27Right now a rather subdued crowd of better than 20,000 settling in, of course,
00:33:33perhaps saving themselves for the big event coming up, Tyson.
00:33:36Oh, I don't think they should save themselves.
00:33:38Let it fly now.
00:33:39This is going to be a good little fight here.
00:33:41Let it get good right now.
00:33:43They may not get force, because they may not get long.
00:33:46That's true.
00:33:47But anyway, back to the business at hand, midway through the second round of this WBO
00:33:51super middleweight title fight, scheduled for 12.
00:33:54Now, Zaghi not quite as effective with his rushes as he had been in the first round.
00:33:58The adjustments made in the corner by Starry seemed to be working a little bit.
00:34:01His right hand's getting closer, leaning more clean, landing more cleanly.
00:34:04But Starry still being the effective, excuse me.
00:34:07Now, Zaghi still being the effective aggression.
00:34:09You know, Bobby, one of the things they told him, don't go rushing in.
00:34:11Get the jab going and move forward and settle in.
00:34:13And he was doing all right with that jab.
00:34:15Look, look what Starry's doing.
00:34:16See, he keeps on fighting inside.
00:34:19There's a cut around the, looks like the right eye.
00:34:23Yeah, right.
00:34:24I think it's more of a nick than it is anything else.
00:34:26But it's going to turn nasty.
00:34:27It's going to turn nasty.
00:34:28He's getting hit a lot.
00:34:29See, sometimes Starry rushes, excuse me, Calzaghi rushes into Starry so much that he smothers his own punches and causes a tie-up.
00:34:41He gets too close in and Starry ties him up and he can't punch.
00:34:44Yeah, he gets started.
00:34:45He can't.
00:34:46There's no breaks.
00:34:54Oh.
00:34:55A few nice little shots.
00:34:57Nice little chopping left hands.
00:34:58Very quick.
00:34:59Very quick combinations by the champion.
00:35:01He counters very well.
00:35:02Let go.
00:35:03Let go.
00:35:04Oh, nice.
00:35:05Left hand there by Calzaghi and he continues to pour it on.
00:35:15An overhand right followed by an overhand left by Calzaghi showing his entire repertoire.
00:35:20As the bell sounds to end round two.
00:35:23Good finish for Calzaghi.
00:35:26That's brilliant.
00:35:27Swing deep, honey.
00:35:28There you go, Phil.
00:35:29Breathe deep.
00:35:30Breathe deep.
00:35:31Breathe deep.
00:35:32Every time you chuck in that short right hand straight through the middle you've landed.
00:35:35Four times you threw it in the round and you landed every time with it, okay?
00:35:39Keep moving away from his left hand.
00:35:41Keep moving to your left.
00:35:42Keep moving to your left.
00:35:44Give me David.
00:35:45Keep moving to your left.
00:35:46Keep moving to your left.
00:35:47Don't worry about me.
00:35:48Do you want to drink?
00:35:49He starts swinging those shots.
00:35:51Yeah, you're listening to me.
00:35:53Keep away from it this time.
00:35:55You're listening to Calzaghi needs to throw those combinations here.
00:35:58We'll see a perfect example of it.
00:36:00He likes to work his way.
00:36:01He's aggressive.
00:36:02A nice counter combination.
00:36:03Not real big punches but pretty accurate and very quick.
00:36:07And when they don't and you don't see them come and they hurt that much more.
00:36:13Starry told us he has had some difficulty over the years with signs.
00:36:17A little cut around the right eye opening up in that second round.
00:36:20We'll see if it worsens as time goes on.
00:36:24Because I think he's got this fight going his way.
00:36:26I mean he's he's working very well and he's inflicting damage a little at a time.
00:36:31But it is going his way.
00:36:33Right.
00:36:34Thus far this fight has been fought at pretty close range.
00:36:39And that is to Calzaghi the champion's advantage.
00:36:47Calzaghi now entering in with tough body shots.
00:36:51And springing right back up.
00:36:53He's starting and he's starting to use the right jab as a measuring tool.
00:36:55You can see him starting to load up a little more each time to the body and to the head.
00:36:59With the left hand sometimes straight sometimes looping it.
00:37:01He's starting to get his range.
00:37:02And Starry's defense at times as we see here a little too lax.
00:37:07He needs more sense of urgency.
00:37:10Well he's got to put out a stiff jab to keep this guy off of him.
00:37:12He hadn't done that.
00:37:13See there's no jab there.
00:37:14He waits till he gets in close to grab him fight inside.
00:37:16But he's not getting any points that way.
00:37:18And the knock on Calzaghi prior to his victory over Chris Eubank for the title a few years ago
00:37:26is that he just didn't fight a good caliber of competition.
00:37:31But Starry as I said earlier is pretty highly regarded here for his boxing technique
00:37:36but not for his defense over here in England.
00:37:39Starry doesn't have anybody on his resume of who's who though.
00:37:42Chris Eubank and Robin Reed are on Calzaghi's winning the winning column.
00:37:46So there's something to be said for facing two guys that had world titles beating both.
00:37:52There has been a lot of criticism of Calzaghi here locally.
00:37:56He has been troubled by injuries to his elbow his hand and his back over the last few years.
00:38:02And he claims that that has been his excuse.
00:38:05I haven't fought since June.
00:38:07We had him on a show that fell through here.
00:38:09I mean you know why why all that.
00:38:11I mean it's it's not it's not hard to figure out.
00:38:14He hasn't got that kind of heart for boxing per se.
00:38:17You know to really get back.
00:38:19He was supposed to fight tough New Jersey fighter Omar Sheikah.
00:38:24He's very young about 22.
00:38:25Very strong still learning his craft.
00:38:28Wouldn't mind seeing that fight.
00:38:30In fact if Calzaghi wins here that might be his next fight.
00:38:32I was going to say if he wins here I think that's what we'll see.
00:38:34And that'll be an exciting fight.
00:38:35And maybe on Showtime.
00:38:36Sheikah comes to fight.
00:38:37Calzaghi obviously comes to fight.
00:38:39But he's got to win here.
00:38:42Strange things happen in boxing.
00:38:46Against Starry now looking to stay on the outside to keep his distance.
00:38:49But he keeps getting lured in by the champion.
00:38:54Calzaghi right of your screen.
00:38:56Starry left.
00:38:57We approach the final 20 seconds of round three.
00:39:00Starry's corner they said that right hand is landing when you throw it.
00:39:03But you're not throwing enough of it in this round.
00:39:04He didn't make that much of an effort to throw it more often.
00:39:06Right.
00:39:07Step back.
00:39:08Now hit it on the bike.
00:39:09On yourself.
00:39:10David Starry 22 and 1 with 15 knockouts.
00:39:14Calzaghi undefeated 27 and 0.
00:39:1623 knockouts.
00:39:17His fifth title defense.
00:39:18He's 5 and 0 in world title fight.
00:39:21That was it.
00:39:27That's a better round though.
00:39:29Okay.
00:39:30Get enemy breathing.
00:39:31Fuck it off the face.
00:39:33A better round.
00:39:34Do you hear what I say?
00:39:35Do you hear what I say?
00:39:36Do you hear what I say?
00:39:37Throw your shots before you go down.
00:39:42That's the matter what you're doing.
00:39:43Don't worry about that.
00:39:44You can win them a lot easier.
00:39:45Alright.
00:39:46You're making hard work.
00:39:47Right.
00:39:48You're making hard work.
00:39:49The way you're not throwing.
00:39:50Not throwing.
00:39:51Don't worry about that.
00:39:52Come on.
00:39:53Two three.
00:39:54Come on.
00:39:55Come on.
00:39:56Come on.
00:39:57Two three.
00:39:58Come on.
00:39:59Come on.
00:40:00Come on.
00:40:01Don't worry about that, don't fight, do some bad ones fight, all right, all right, you're not throwing your punches, all right, you don't want to fight, you just want to tackle in, all right, hold your punches, all right, all right, okay, all right, let those lightning bolts come from our side.
00:40:17Here we go, round four for the WBO Super Middleweight Championship, this is a title that used to belong to a very popular fighter named Irish Steve Collins, very popular in Boston as well as over here in Europe, fought a lot of fights in Boston, then came Chris Eubank, then came Joe Calzaghe, and here we are as he defends against David Starry of England, Calzaghe, a Welsh
00:40:47man, well, they sort of got him on the corners and you slept a little bit, you're not throwing those punches in the third round as much, he still won the round as far as I'm concerned by a narrow margin, but he wasn't as effective as he had been before, first and second he was much more effective, it's like he's slowing down.
00:41:07See what he does there, he has very quick combinations that don't have real power on him, but they're effective and they sometimes land, and once you have a hand in your face, makes you think about something,
00:41:16and you can't do anything, and you can't do anything with a hand in your face.
00:41:18And fellas, the crowd beginning to grow impatient as you can hear in the background right now, they want more action.
00:41:27And Calzaghe, normally an action fighter, but perhaps it's the style of Starry that's setting him off a little bit.
00:41:36Yeah, Starry's not willing to stand there and go toe-to-toe with him, and that's causing a little bit of a slow fight here instead of the fiery beginning.
00:41:44Oh, nice, beautiful counter left hand by the champion, what this started out fast and now turning into a cat and mouse chess game.
00:41:52They're talking a lot to each other, they must be very friendly, I mean, or else they're saying nasty things.
00:41:59They're auditioning for blow-by-blow in color.
00:42:02Well, he's asking what's it like to run into a fiery house, you know, to start, oh, Starry is a fireman.
00:42:09And as he says, between a fireman and a boxer, hard to ensure.
00:42:15I asked him what's more difficult, and he said fighting in the ring, some people might disagree.
00:42:23These two guys have known each other a long time, back to their amateur careers, so they have a lot of history between them.
00:42:31On the inside, you'll see quite often that both fighters, when they tie up, hit each other in the ear, behind the head a little bit, referee hasn't warned anybody, not even one time.
00:42:40Very unusual.
00:42:41The third man of the head, John Coyle, out of Northampton, England.
00:42:50Oh, right off the top of the head, left hook by Joe Calzaghe.
00:42:53He's got Starry pinned up against the ropes in the corner, but Starry in no hurry to get out of there.
00:43:00Nice work by Calzaghe, landing hard shots in combinations.
00:43:05I don't know if Starry was looking to play possum, or he was just trapped in the corner, but it didn't seem that he was anxious to remove himself.
00:43:12He didn't necessarily appear to be playing possum, but what it looked like, Steve, he was trying to do was time Calzaghe with one of those leaps in, and maybe land a home run right hand.
00:43:20He didn't do it.
00:43:21He hit an awful lot.
00:43:23His strategy did not work for Starry.
00:43:25Calzaghe, ever the aggressor, always pushing Starry backward, works him into the corner here.
00:43:43Yeah, you've made too long, you've made me shots.
00:43:45All right?
00:43:46All right, don't let him.
00:43:47You're out of it.
00:43:49Calzaghi, ever the aggressor, always pushing Starry backward,
00:43:53works him into the corner here,
00:43:54and now he has him pretty much where he wants him.
00:43:56His speed is just as good, if not better.
00:43:58His power is better, and he's landing,
00:44:00and Starry really can't get out of there
00:44:02and doesn't time any of the shots.
00:44:04There was a fair right-hand attempt,
00:44:06but very effective for the champion.
00:44:08Here's another look at it from a different angle.
00:44:10He compromises Starry, giving him nowhere to go.
00:44:14Quick hand speed, counters, one right hand in the process.
00:44:18He loses that combination, does the job.
00:44:23Round number five, scheduled for 12
00:44:25for the WBO Super Middleweight Championship.
00:44:28168 powders.
00:44:29Joe Calzaghi from Wales on the right of your screen.
00:44:32David Starry out of England on the left.
00:44:35Starry better get started doing something.
00:44:36This fight's just eluding him.
00:44:38Just a little bit at a time, it's just oozing away.
00:44:42He better do something.
00:44:44He better stand and fight.
00:44:45This is what he better do.
00:44:48He's being too relaxed.
00:44:49He said that he's very relaxed
00:44:53and actually enjoying the occasion.
00:44:55He says he feels no pressure
00:44:56because all the attention has been on Tyson and Francis,
00:44:59but he had better get his act together here soon.
00:45:02He said he feels a lot more pressure
00:45:03in front of his hometown crowd.
00:45:04Well, I don't know if it's pressure that he needs to feel,
00:45:06but he needs to feel a sense of urgency
00:45:08because the rounds are slipping by
00:45:09and he's not on the winning end of many.
00:45:15Calzaghi now flicking the jab.
00:45:16There's a combination to the head of David Starry.
00:45:19Very fast flurry of three or four points.
00:45:21They weren't hard, but they're impressive when they land.
00:45:24And point good.
00:45:25Good.
00:45:25Three judges working the fight.
00:45:29Billy Lurch from Chicago.
00:45:30Robert Ramirez from San Juan
00:45:32and Mickey Vann from Leeds, England.
00:45:34The referee doesn't score.
00:45:36Unlike in the main event
00:45:37where the referee, Roy Francis,
00:45:39no relation to Julius Francis,
00:45:41will be the lone scorer.
00:45:43No judges.
00:45:45That's a non-title fight in England.
00:45:47Those are the rules.
00:45:47This is the way a championship fight should be ruled.
00:45:52The countries should be completely,
00:45:54you know, divorced from the fight.
00:45:55There's only one country, England,
00:45:56for both fighters.
00:45:57And the other one's Puerto Rico and America.
00:45:59That's perfect.
00:46:01Buzz holding.
00:46:02Come out.
00:46:03Leg on.
00:46:10Oh, a good straight right hand
00:46:12out of nowhere by David Starry,
00:46:13and that got the attention of the champion, Calzaghi.
00:46:16That was his best punch of the fight.
00:46:18But one and done, Steve.
00:46:19He needs to follow it up with a left hook
00:46:20or maybe even come back with a couple of jabs
00:46:22and another full combination.
00:46:24He's not doing enough.
00:46:25Starry just doesn't have
00:46:27a lot of combinations available tonight.
00:46:30He has no fire.
00:46:31He's a fireman without a fire.
00:46:33It's one at a time.
00:46:34He's looking for the one and get out.
00:46:35Good line.
00:46:36Thank you very much.
00:46:38No mention.
00:46:40This is the fifth round.
00:46:41How depressing is it
00:46:42that it's been five rounds before?
00:46:43You mentioned that that was one good punch.
00:46:46One good punch in five rounds.
00:46:48That's depressing.
00:46:50I mean, this guy's got to start to fight.
00:46:52Proud waiting for more action
00:46:53from their hometown guy, David Starry.
00:46:57The whistling, the boos, haven't begun yet.
00:47:00It's just been very, very quiet.
00:47:02It's a miracle they haven't started to whistle.
00:47:09They're denoting that they're unhappy.
00:47:13Well, maybe someone needs to sound the alarm
00:47:16for David Starry.
00:47:17It's two or three.
00:47:19Bell alarm.
00:47:19Sounds like he needs one right here
00:47:21to get the juices flowing
00:47:22as the bell sounds.
00:47:30Coming up next,
00:47:31our man of Ed, Tyson versus Francis,
00:47:33into the dressing room
00:47:34of the former undisputed champion Mike Tyson.
00:47:37We shall go.
00:47:39The action to Tyson
00:47:40has been overwhelmingly favorable
00:47:42with a core of protests.
00:47:43The people are not supporting
00:47:45the local guy, Julius Francis.
00:47:47There's Mike getting taped up.
00:47:50Tyson's been embraced by the British,
00:47:52buoyed by the large enthusiastic crowds.
00:47:54He attracts,
00:47:56criticized the United States
00:47:57where many have grown weary of him,
00:47:59saying everybody is money hungry.
00:48:00He doesn't get the respect he gets here.
00:48:02Might even move to London, he says.
00:48:04As he gets ready for
00:48:08the main event tonight,
00:48:10as does this packed house
00:48:12at the MEN Arena,
00:48:13awaiting the marquee matchup,
00:48:16Mike Tyson versus Julius Francis.
00:48:20Round six.
00:48:22Round six.
00:48:24The WBO super middleweight title.
00:48:27It has been all Joe Calzaghe,
00:48:29the defending champion.
00:48:31They're both wearing black trucks,
00:48:33but Starry, the challenger,
00:48:35has stars down the side.
00:48:36Apropos.
00:48:37And see stars from time to time.
00:48:40The tattoos on his right arm
00:48:41are the names of his children.
00:48:47In case you were wondering.
00:48:51Beautiful right hand by Starry.
00:48:53Stepped right in,
00:48:54right down the pipe,
00:48:56and the champion took it,
00:48:57squirted it in the nose.
00:48:58A little tiny bit of blood
00:49:01on the nostril,
00:49:02but not much,
00:49:04of the champion,
00:49:05Calzaghe,
00:49:06who has a remarkably straight nose
00:49:08for a fighter.
00:49:09Starry hit him with the great right hand,
00:49:10no left hook,
00:49:11no combinations following it up.
00:49:16Right!
00:49:17Yeah, after that right hand,
00:49:18you would think he'd mount
00:49:19a little attack
00:49:20just in case he did some damage
00:49:21with that,
00:49:22but he didn't.
00:49:22We haven't seen one
00:49:23so-called flurry
00:49:25from the challenger,
00:49:26David Starry.
00:49:29Straight left by Calzaghe,
00:49:31blocked by Starry.
00:49:32Now Starry beginning
00:49:33to open it up a little more,
00:49:35showing that sense of urgency
00:49:36he needs.
00:49:38Let's see if it continues.
00:49:40Strike!
00:49:42He's just fighting in spurts.
00:49:43I'm also waiting
00:49:53for the movement
00:49:54and the variety
00:49:55of technique
00:49:56and the jabs
00:49:57that we've heard so much about
00:49:58with regard to Starry,
00:49:59but he has been sniping
00:50:01the right eye
00:50:04of David Starry.
00:50:05That gets worse.
00:50:06That's in the bra now.
00:50:07Yeah, that cut's looking bad now.
00:50:12Yeah, because it could
00:50:12creep down into the eye
00:50:13and cloud his vision now
00:50:15to make matters worse
00:50:18for the guy.
00:50:18Yeah, as if it isn't bad enough,
00:50:21he's got a cut now on top of him.
00:50:25Oh, it's very bad now, Bernie.
00:50:28And let me tell you,
00:50:29he did what Bobby
00:50:29just pointed out.
00:50:30He looked at the referee
00:50:31and said,
00:50:31hey, this guy just hit me
00:50:32in the back of the head.
00:50:33I know, he hasn't worn
00:50:34him one time
00:50:34and they've both done it
00:50:35quite a bit.
00:50:36And you hear the crowd
00:50:37reaction as they get wind
00:50:38of the cut.
00:50:45If a fight is stopped
00:50:46by an accidental headbutt
00:50:47before the end
00:50:48of the fourth round,
00:50:49the fight is a technical draw.
00:50:50Obviously, we are beyond that
00:50:52now in round six.
00:50:55And after the end
00:50:56of the fourth round,
00:50:57they go to the scorecards.
00:50:58Beautiful straight left hand
00:51:00by the champion.
00:51:01He is aiming for that eye.
00:51:02He is teeing off on that eye
00:51:04and he's hitting it a lot.
00:51:05It is target practice
00:51:06now for Joe Kalzagi
00:51:07as the eye gets worse
00:51:11and worse.
00:51:17David Stari's right eye
00:51:19damaged
00:51:19and becoming
00:51:21a huge factor here now.
00:51:22take a look at that really nice
00:51:44right hand by Stari right down the middle
00:51:45and then he allows himself
00:51:47to be tied up.
00:51:48He should have worked there.
00:51:49Snapped the champion's head
00:51:50back very well.
00:51:53There's a little shot
00:51:54in the back of the head
00:51:55by Stari,
00:51:56something I've been talking about.
00:51:57The referee hasn't said a word.
00:51:58And you can see a little bit
00:51:59of a look like
00:52:00why didn't you
00:52:00take care of that?
00:52:01Why didn't you warn him?
00:52:02Positive thinking.
00:52:03Come on,
00:52:04you can do this.
00:52:05David,
00:52:05keep listening to me.
00:52:07Now calm down
00:52:08and do your fucking business.
00:52:10Right.
00:52:10You're calling me a fucking shot
00:52:11there.
00:52:11It's not just fucking
00:52:12anything off his shoulder.
00:52:13Corners.
00:52:14Come on,
00:52:14you've got to work for it.
00:52:14You've got to work for it.
00:52:16Come on.
00:52:17He's going to run right on to him,
00:52:18David.
00:52:18Now listen.
00:52:19Ready?
00:52:20Come on.
00:52:20A left hand causing
00:52:28that bad cut
00:52:29around the right eye
00:52:30of David Stari.
00:52:31It was not the result
00:52:32of a headbutt.
00:52:35As we mentioned,
00:52:36Stari has had
00:52:37a bit of a history
00:52:38of cutting in the past.
00:52:39This has not been
00:52:40an overwhelmingly
00:52:41impressive performance
00:52:42by the champion,
00:52:43Joe Calzaghi,
00:52:44who could take on
00:52:45Omar Shikha someday.
00:52:47The champion throws
00:52:48a straight left hand,
00:52:49which is pretty good,
00:52:49but he also throws one
00:52:50and he kind of loops
00:52:51it around the side
00:52:51almost like a left hook,
00:52:52although Southpaw's
00:52:53technically don't throw
00:52:54left hooks.
00:52:55His is hookish
00:52:56or overhandish,
00:52:57and it scrapes
00:52:58across that eye
00:52:59and tears it open
00:52:59a little more each time.
00:53:03Nice shot.
00:53:04Stari just walked
00:53:05right into an overhand
00:53:05left.
00:53:06Oh, did he ever.
00:53:07Again, his defense,
00:53:09a problem.
00:53:11His corner,
00:53:11Calzaghi's going to
00:53:12calm down
00:53:13and get down to work.
00:53:14You know what you've
00:53:14got to do here.
00:53:15Don't just be
00:53:16slapping around.
00:53:17I think he's done
00:53:17pretty well.
00:53:18He's taken every round,
00:53:19and his opponent,
00:53:21I don't think he'd do better.
00:53:23Yes, he could.
00:53:24You could knock him out,
00:53:25but...
00:53:26And he has 23 knockouts
00:53:28in 27 fights.
00:53:30This is pay-per-view
00:53:31in England.
00:53:32They needed a few rounds
00:53:33to make everybody happy
00:53:34they're getting him here.
00:53:35it should be the record.
00:53:41Starry's resorted
00:53:42to moving, moving, moving,
00:53:43stopping and jumping in
00:53:44with a big left hook
00:53:45or right hand,
00:53:46hoping to catch.
00:53:46Champion is not working.
00:53:47Right!
00:53:48Right again.
00:53:49Back of the head,
00:53:50real hard,
00:53:51by both fighters.
00:53:52Come on.
00:53:53That shouldn't be.
00:53:53Calzaghi now bores in,
00:53:55but Starry ties him up.
00:53:57There it is again.
00:53:59Starry on the inside.
00:54:01There it is again.
00:54:02There's holding and hitting
00:54:03going on, as you can see.
00:54:05Well, apparently,
00:54:06the referee does not think
00:54:07that's a foul.
00:54:08I'll see it.
00:54:08He gave one little warning
00:54:11on the inside
00:54:12to both of them earlier,
00:54:13but it was very,
00:54:13you know,
00:54:14a contrary warning.
00:54:15He just kind of phoned
00:54:16that one in.
00:54:16Right!
00:54:17Step back!
00:54:18Are you told?
00:54:18Step back!
00:54:19Both now seem to be
00:54:37taking a bit of a break.
00:54:38You hear some booing
00:54:40from the crowd.
00:54:41There's a hitting behind
00:54:42the back of the head
00:54:44by Calzaghi.
00:54:45A countering shot
00:54:47behind the head
00:54:48by Starry.
00:54:49So, rabbit punching
00:54:50continues.
00:54:53And that is a no-no.
00:54:55Well, there's no variety
00:54:56here.
00:54:57It's the same thing
00:54:57round after round after
00:54:58round.
00:54:59Calzaghi eating him up
00:55:00for one round after
00:55:01but not doing enough
00:55:02damage to stop him.
00:55:07Break!
00:55:10The crowd continues
00:55:12to grow restless.
00:55:15I say the eye
00:55:16has not gotten any worse.
00:55:17Well, a moral victory,
00:55:20if anything,
00:55:20for Starry.
00:55:22You hear the reaction
00:55:27from the crowd
00:55:28and it's not a good one.
00:55:30They are really anxious
00:55:32for the main event
00:55:33coming up next
00:55:33between Mike Tyson
00:55:35and Julius Francis,
00:55:36the homegrown product
00:55:37from England.
00:55:38We're going to take you
00:55:40into the dressing room
00:55:41of local product
00:55:42Julius Francis
00:55:43who trained and lived
00:55:44in an army camp
00:55:45near London
00:55:46while Tyson was housed
00:55:47at a plush
00:55:48downtown London hotel.
00:55:50There is Francis
00:55:51in the dressing room
00:55:52while Tyson trained
00:55:54in a chandeliered ballroom
00:55:56and in luxurious surroundings
00:55:59and periodically went off
00:56:00to exorbitant shopping sprees.
00:56:02Francis was in a small room
00:56:04with no phone and no TV.
00:56:05He needed permission
00:56:06from his manager
00:56:07to go for milk and bread.
00:56:09He actually looked forward
00:56:09to training
00:56:10to break up the monotony.
00:56:12Quite a contrast
00:56:12for the two fighters
00:56:13who square off
00:56:14later tonight.
00:56:15Let's see if the action
00:56:27picks up here.
00:56:30You guys,
00:56:31it's been fairly dull
00:56:33up to this point.
00:56:33Good luck
00:56:33by Calzaghe there.
00:56:38Another one,
00:56:38a pounding left hand.
00:56:40He continues to pound
00:56:41away with the left.
00:56:41The referee's telling them
00:56:46both now,
00:56:46no behind the head.
00:56:47There it is.
00:56:48Finally,
00:56:49John Coyle
00:56:49gets into the middle of it.
00:56:52But it's Terry
00:56:52that he likes to fight inside.
00:56:54He's not doing anything inside.
00:56:55He's got some uppercuts
00:56:56going inside,
00:56:56but they don't hurt.
00:56:57They don't do anything.
00:57:00Oh, there it is.
00:57:01Well, thus far,
00:57:02Starry showing
00:57:02that he is not
00:57:03in the class
00:57:04of a Joe Calzaghe.
00:57:05And let's face it,
00:57:06while Calzaghe
00:57:07is basically winning
00:57:08every round,
00:57:09he's not exactly
00:57:10astonishing
00:57:11the people here.
00:57:12Now, see,
00:57:12there were a couple
00:57:13of reasonable counters
00:57:14by Starry.
00:57:15He blocked Calzaghe
00:57:16and he went
00:57:16left-hooked right hand,
00:57:17but then, hell,
00:57:19you have to follow up,
00:57:20especially when
00:57:20you're this far behind.
00:57:22I think the word
00:57:24would be
00:57:24that Calzaghe
00:57:25is not convincing.
00:57:27He has not convinced me
00:57:28of his title.
00:57:29He's just doing enough.
00:57:31When he comes
00:57:31to the States
00:57:32to fight American fighters,
00:57:33he better be
00:57:34a lot better than this.
00:57:37Well, with all due fairness,
00:57:38it's a difficult fight
00:57:39to look that good
00:57:40in the way they hold
00:57:41as soon as they
00:57:42get close to one another,
00:57:43so it'd be better
00:57:44to judge him
00:57:45with someone
00:57:45who's going to fight
00:57:46back a little more freely.
00:57:48Well, I think
00:57:49he'll get that
00:57:49in the States.
00:57:51Well, I'm sure he will.
00:57:55Calzaghe told us
00:57:56he has been struggling
00:57:57at 168.
00:57:58He wants to move up
00:57:59to 175.
00:58:01Well, if he weighs
00:58:02that way this morning,
00:58:03what difference is it?
00:58:04176 just prior
00:58:05to the fight.
00:58:05Yeah, so what's
00:58:06he talking about?
00:58:06That's what he weighs.
00:58:09He doesn't talk
00:58:10about feeding up
00:58:11the division,
00:58:12and it's been
00:58:12a nondescript division
00:58:14at that.
00:58:15I remember the old days
00:58:16when we had to weigh
00:58:16in the morning
00:58:17of the fight,
00:58:17and I would weigh
00:58:17168,
00:58:19and by fighting,
00:58:19I weigh 180.
00:58:20Same day.
00:58:21You're kidding.
00:58:23That is unbelievable.
00:58:23He used to struggle
00:58:24to take the water off
00:58:25and then rehydrate
00:58:26so much
00:58:26that we gained
00:58:2710 pounds
00:58:27on the same day.
00:58:28When Bobby was fighting,
00:58:29I was commenting
00:58:30on NBC.
00:58:31I always said,
00:58:31there's a guy
00:58:32that's full of water.
00:58:33Bobby went slush
00:58:34in the ring,
00:58:3510 pounds of water
00:58:36one day.
00:58:39As we head
00:58:40to the final
00:58:4040 seconds
00:58:41of round eight,
00:58:42WBO super middleweight
00:58:43title at stake.
00:58:44The rhythmic applause
00:58:45now beginning
00:58:46to build here
00:58:47at the MEN Arena.
00:58:49We're trying to get
00:58:49something going here.
00:58:52Galsagi just got it
00:58:54in the nose,
00:58:54but not from a punch,
00:58:55from a shoulder.
00:58:57And now the buoy
00:58:58ranges on.
00:59:00Kalsagi chasing
00:59:01Starry around the ring
00:59:02and it's really
00:59:03getting crazy now.
00:59:06Break.
00:59:06Okay, I got it.
00:59:11Oh, a good left hand
00:59:12there by Starry.
00:59:14He countered,
00:59:14but Kalsagi
00:59:15didn't even flinch.
00:59:17They both hit each other
00:59:17pretty well there.
00:59:19Kalsagi made an effort
00:59:20to initiate the attack
00:59:22and Starry
00:59:22countered him immediately
00:59:23but then caught
00:59:24a couple counters back.
00:59:25Kalsagi saw a good chin
00:59:27as he just shrugged it off
00:59:29and listen to this crowd.
00:59:31Frankie Warren's over there.
00:59:32You've got to want
00:59:33to hurt this kid.
00:59:34Come on.
00:59:34He's no good dancing around.
00:59:35I'm trying.
00:59:36I don't want to be cool.
00:59:36Listen, never mind about that.
00:59:38You've got to be
00:59:38positive thinking.
00:59:39Come on, you want to be champion.
00:59:40Watch Starry get crushed
00:59:47by a overhand left
00:59:49from the champion
00:59:50and here they just hold
00:59:52on to each other
00:59:52and do a little hitting
00:59:53on the inside.
00:59:54Holding and hitting a little
00:59:54batting behind the ears,
00:59:56behind the head.
00:59:57It's been a lot
00:59:59of the fight.
01:00:00That's how it's been spent
01:00:01in the clinch
01:00:01hitting each other
01:00:02in the ears
01:00:02and behind the head.
01:00:06Later in the round
01:00:07we're going to see
01:00:08a nice big right hand
01:00:09jumping in with the right hand
01:00:10left hook by the challenger
01:00:11but gets tied up
01:00:13once again on the inside
01:00:14a very frustrating fight
01:00:15for both guys I'm sure.
01:00:17Promoter Frank Bar
01:00:18officially upset
01:00:19at Joe Kalsagi.
01:00:21Oh, he came over
01:00:22and really came in
01:00:23with chewing out.
01:00:24He reamed him.
01:00:24He said work, work in there.
01:00:27Get started.
01:00:29Well, he knows how important
01:00:30this is to Kalsagi's future
01:00:32getting this worldwide
01:00:33exposure here
01:00:34onto the spotlight.
01:00:36First time on American
01:00:37television that's going
01:00:38all around the world
01:00:39as well.
01:00:40He's winning,
01:00:40he's just not making
01:00:41the definitive statement
01:00:42that he wants to make.
01:00:43Exactly.
01:00:44As Bernie pointed out,
01:00:45he's just not doing
01:00:46the job convincingly here.
01:00:48He's not decisive enough
01:00:49and that's what
01:00:49he's got to do.
01:00:53We'll see if that's
01:00:54the fire he needed
01:00:55to get lit under him.
01:00:57Well, I bet Roy Jones
01:00:58has taken note of my comment
01:01:00that he wants to fight
01:01:01Roy Jones
01:01:01and he's licking his lips
01:01:02and trying to get in touch
01:01:03on long distance phone
01:01:04right now.
01:01:05When do I get this guy?
01:01:06Please.
01:01:07Mike, come out.
01:01:09There have been no
01:01:10knockdowns thus far
01:01:11in the fight.
01:01:15As mentioned earlier,
01:01:16Kalsagi has never
01:01:17been off his feet.
01:01:18Starry just once
01:01:19in his only loss
01:01:20back in 97
01:01:21to a fellow named
01:01:22Dean Francis
01:01:22in sixth round TKO
01:01:24in defense of his
01:01:26British super middleweight
01:01:27crown.
01:01:29But he's 8-0
01:01:30with five knockouts
01:01:31since that lone defeat,
01:01:33including a first round
01:01:34knockout of Danny Juma
01:01:36in 106 seconds,
01:01:38but certainly a different
01:01:40story here
01:01:41as this crowd again
01:01:42responds negatively.
01:01:44Yeah, right here
01:01:45on the inside,
01:01:46Starry wants to fight
01:01:47it's the champion
01:01:48holding.
01:01:49But he's done that
01:01:50the whole fight.
01:01:51Once he gets in close,
01:01:52it's Starry that punches
01:01:53in close.
01:01:54But then outside,
01:01:55he's killing him.
01:01:56If it was just clenches,
01:01:58Starry would be winning
01:01:59the fight.
01:01:59Now Starry up on
01:02:00the balls of his feet
01:02:02looking a little more
01:02:03peppery,
01:02:04starting to show
01:02:06that movement
01:02:07that he is known for
01:02:08here in England,
01:02:09but he's got to
01:02:11produce,
01:02:12he's got to throw
01:02:12some punches.
01:02:13I was going to say,
01:02:13the movement's one thing,
01:02:14he's got to punch
01:02:14with that movement.
01:02:15Exactly.
01:02:15He can't beat him
01:02:16by looking good.
01:02:28This is like a broken record,
01:02:34you know,
01:02:34like you've heard it
01:02:35if it gets clicked
01:02:36and it goes all over again.
01:02:38Outside,
01:02:38it's Kalsagi,
01:02:39inside,
01:02:40it's Starry,
01:02:40and they reset
01:02:41and they do it
01:02:41all over again,
01:02:42over and over
01:02:43and over.
01:02:49Starry missing
01:02:50and missing
01:02:51and missing again.
01:02:53Good Bobby
01:02:53leaving here
01:02:54by the champion,
01:02:54but he didn't fire,
01:02:55he made Starry miss,
01:02:56he should have
01:02:57unloaded on him.
01:02:58You know,
01:02:58Bobby,
01:02:59I get the feeling
01:02:59neither one are
01:03:00hurting each other.
01:03:01There's no hurt
01:03:01in this fight.
01:03:02This is a ballet here.
01:03:04Nobody's hurting each other.
01:03:05Nobody's wearing
01:03:06each other down.
01:03:07It's just like
01:03:08a rough dance.
01:03:08Yeah,
01:03:09it's a kind of break dance.
01:03:12Nobody's getting hurt.
01:03:13It's the Lombada,
01:03:15the forbidden dance.
01:03:16The forbidden,
01:03:17oh, that's very good.
01:03:18David,
01:03:18sorry about the best thing
01:03:19you can say about him
01:03:20is they did a good job
01:03:21on that cut.
01:03:22They did that.
01:03:24So when you're behind
01:03:25by that many rounds,
01:03:26you can't lay back
01:03:26like that.
01:03:27You hang out.
01:03:28You have to be aggressive
01:03:28and score.
01:03:30Loud are the boos
01:03:32at Cascade now.
01:03:34Well,
01:03:35here's something special
01:03:36for you,
01:03:36Showtime subscribers
01:03:37with internet access
01:03:38tonight.
01:03:39We invite you to chat
01:03:39online with interim IBF
01:03:41Junior Weatherway champion
01:03:42Zav Judah starting at 11
01:03:44p.m. Eastern time.
01:03:45He's ready to discuss
01:03:46tonight's fights with you
01:03:48as well as his upcoming
01:03:48February 12th Showtime fight
01:03:50against Jan Bergman.
01:03:52SHO.com,
01:03:53also your boxing web address
01:03:54for online scoring,
01:03:56Mike Tyson interviews,
01:03:57post-fight analysis,
01:03:59and more.
01:03:59Once again,
01:04:01that's URLSHO.com.
01:04:04Well, we hit double figures,
01:04:18round 10,
01:04:19scheduled for 12 for the WBO
01:04:21super middleweight championship.
01:04:34It has been a tough nut to crack here.
01:04:41The fans are upset,
01:04:42and understandably so,
01:04:43because there really hasn't been
01:04:44that much action,
01:04:45and the champion Joe Calzaghe
01:04:47expected to look a lot better,
01:04:49and David Starry has been very
01:04:51laxed with his defense
01:04:52and really hasn't shown
01:04:53that much as well.
01:04:55Calzaghe's won just about
01:04:56every round,
01:04:56just about every round,
01:04:58convincing,
01:04:59but barely convincing.
01:05:01I don't think that
01:05:02the way they're going,
01:05:05they can do anything
01:05:05but go to a decision,
01:05:06and the decisions
01:05:07are working on a conclusion.
01:05:08Even in the corner,
01:05:09Calzaghe's corner
01:05:11has not dared to say,
01:05:12hey, we're losing some rounds,
01:05:13you better pick it up.
01:05:14I think it's pretty clear
01:05:15that if this goes to a decision
01:05:17right now,
01:05:18Starry cannot win.
01:05:19He'd have to drop
01:05:20the champion twice
01:05:22in every round
01:05:22just to maybe
01:05:23come out with a draw,
01:05:24and I don't think that's fine.
01:05:25And he doesn't have
01:05:26one-punch knockout power,
01:05:27that's for sure.
01:05:28He has 15 knockouts
01:05:30in his 22 wins,
01:05:32one defeat.
01:05:33So that is very unlikely,
01:05:35and on top of that,
01:05:37Calzaghe has a very,
01:05:39very good chin.
01:05:40Look at him.
01:05:41Booing, getting louder
01:05:42and louder.
01:05:45Can you hear that,
01:05:47Martin?
01:05:47Can you hear it?
01:05:47And the cut opens up
01:05:49once again
01:05:49around that right eye
01:05:51of the challenger,
01:05:52Starry.
01:05:53Nice right hand
01:05:53and left hook
01:05:54by Starry very early on
01:05:55when the champion
01:05:56came out rushing
01:05:57Starry.
01:05:58Starry did a lot
01:05:59of holding.
01:05:59Now almost all the holding
01:06:00is being done
01:06:00by the champion
01:06:01because Starry wants
01:06:02to work.
01:06:03We just haven't seen
01:06:05that excellent variety,
01:06:06that quick, accurate,
01:06:08good boxing ability,
01:06:10the hand and foot speed,
01:06:11the good technique
01:06:12that was advertised
01:06:13about David Starry.
01:06:16Well, Calzaghe had
01:06:17this incredible confidence
01:06:19that he was going
01:06:20to knock this guy out
01:06:21in five rounds.
01:06:22He must be a little upset
01:06:23that it's going on
01:06:24to 10 and no sign
01:06:25of the knockout.
01:06:25Nobody even hurt.
01:06:28And from tapes
01:06:29that I have seen
01:06:30of Calzaghe,
01:06:31he was a lot busier,
01:06:32a lot more active,
01:06:34looked a lot stronger,
01:06:35there was more movement,
01:06:36very aggressive,
01:06:37not as much here tonight.
01:06:38And the crowd
01:06:39with an indication
01:06:42in the background.
01:06:42Stop off, Steve!
01:06:43Stop off, Steve!
01:06:44Stop off, Steve!
01:06:44Stop off!
01:06:44Stop!
01:06:45Stop!
01:06:46Oh!
01:06:47He decked Chris Eubank,
01:06:49a legend here in England,
01:06:51seconds in
01:06:52with a left hook
01:06:52to the jaw.
01:06:55And then he knocked
01:06:56him down again
01:06:57later in the fight
01:06:57en route
01:06:58to the championship victory.
01:07:01Cut starting to open up
01:07:02a little bit again,
01:07:02but they've done
01:07:03a real good job
01:07:03with their cut.
01:07:10Starry trying
01:07:11a straight right hand,
01:07:12but it was nicely blocked
01:07:14by the gloves
01:07:15of Calzaghe.
01:07:17At least it was hard.
01:07:18At least he was trying hard.
01:07:20Yeah, that right hand
01:07:20to have bad intentions on it.
01:07:22Yeah, I mean,
01:07:22that's a usual thing
01:07:23is a fluff.
01:07:24I know.
01:07:30Ten of the books,
01:07:31the crowd again reacts.
01:07:34It's time to go
01:07:35inside the ropes
01:07:35with Bobby Chess.
01:07:38We're going to take
01:07:38a good, close look
01:07:39at this constant
01:07:40hitting behind the head.
01:07:42Here's one behind the head.
01:07:43There's one from both guys.
01:07:44Two more by the champion.
01:07:46That's another one
01:07:46by Starry behind the head.
01:07:48That's pretty ugly.
01:07:49Here they do.
01:07:50They clinch again.
01:07:51Underneath,
01:07:52behind the head.
01:07:55As soon as they get
01:07:56inside,
01:07:56behind the head.
01:07:58These guys don't make it.
01:08:00They don't even try
01:08:00and hide the fact
01:08:01that they're aiming
01:08:02behind the head.
01:08:03They're not trying
01:08:03to cover it up
01:08:03by coming across the face.
01:08:05They don't come back.
01:08:06They just go
01:08:06way back to the head.
01:08:08Listen,
01:08:10fuck the technique.
01:08:11Let's go to war, right?
01:08:12You've got to go to war.
01:08:12That's all it is now, son.
01:08:13It's a war.
01:08:14It's a two-round fucking war.
01:08:15Now, get over yourself.
01:08:16Show us what you've got in here.
01:08:17Show us what you've got in here,
01:08:19boy.
01:08:19Well, as we head
01:08:30into the championship rounds,
01:08:32the fans are looking
01:08:35for more of a championship performance
01:08:37by Joe Calzaghi.
01:08:39Round 11.
01:08:40And so is his corner.
01:08:41We picked up a little bit
01:08:42of that audio,
01:08:43and he says,
01:08:43we've got to go to war.
01:08:44We've got to go to war.
01:08:46I'm not sure I understand
01:08:47that he has to go to war.
01:08:48I think he's won the fight,
01:08:49the champion,
01:08:50but he's looking great.
01:08:52I don't think that was
01:08:52in the champion's corner.
01:08:53I think that was in...
01:08:54You're talking about Starry.
01:08:54Yeah.
01:08:56In Starry's corner,
01:08:57we picked up the sound
01:08:58with this guy's microphone.
01:08:59Oh, that's beautiful.
01:09:00And he said,
01:09:01we've got to go to war.
01:09:01We're losing this fight.
01:09:02Then I agree.
01:09:03Yeah, absolutely.
01:09:04Declare war.
01:09:05Well, these guys
01:09:06are the opening act
01:09:07for the main event.
01:09:09And unfortunately,
01:09:10they're looking like
01:09:11an opening act.
01:09:13They should be more impressive.
01:09:18What a shame
01:09:18on national,
01:09:20international television
01:09:21and you put on
01:09:22a performance like this.
01:09:23What a shame for both fighters.
01:09:26Well, if he finds
01:09:27David Starry
01:09:27to have an awkward style,
01:09:29Calzaghe as champion
01:09:30should be able to solve him.
01:09:32Absolutely.
01:09:34But it looks like
01:09:34this will certainly
01:09:35go to a decision
01:09:36with two rounds to go
01:09:37unless something
01:09:38wild occurs.
01:09:41Well, if you're looking
01:09:42forward to seeing
01:09:43more of a display
01:09:44of power,
01:09:45perhaps you can expect
01:09:47it in the upcoming fight.
01:09:51And certainly don't expect
01:09:52that fight
01:09:53to go this many rounds.
01:09:55I clearly wouldn't expect
01:09:56it to go one-tenth
01:09:57of this many rounds.
01:09:58Most people don't think
01:09:59it will go outside one.
01:10:01In fact, Frank Maloney,
01:10:03the mayoral candidate
01:10:05in London
01:10:06and the manager
01:10:07of Julius Francis
01:10:08Francis went public
01:10:10and said if it goes
01:10:11outside one round,
01:10:13it'll be a moral victory.
01:10:15And this is Francis' manager.
01:10:18Yeah.
01:10:19On that, he'll run for parliament.
01:10:21On the do-nothing ticket.
01:10:22Well, that is not an overflow
01:10:23of confidence.
01:10:25Not a glowing endorsement
01:10:26for the Englishman.
01:10:27A little bit of a better
01:10:28series there for the challenger.
01:10:30Starting to get to
01:10:31Calzaghe a little bit,
01:10:33but to way too little
01:10:34and certainly too late.
01:10:36But he is trying to fight more,
01:10:37just like his coroner said,
01:10:38declare war.
01:10:38You've got to get started.
01:10:39You cannot win this fight.
01:10:44Both fighters looking weary now.
01:10:49You know the height of disillusionment.
01:10:51You get home
01:10:51and they lock you out
01:10:52of the firehouse.
01:10:54They throw you out.
01:10:55You can't go to any fires.
01:10:56That's when you really know
01:10:56you're having a bad night.
01:10:58Yes, we have a fire,
01:10:59but you can't come.
01:11:01Less than 30 seconds,
01:11:02round 11.
01:11:07Almost every punch by Starry
01:11:09is warded off by the champion.
01:11:14And Calzaghe's punch
01:11:15don't seem to have
01:11:16any effect on Starry.
01:11:18They're not weakening him.
01:11:19They're not making him woozy.
01:11:23Left hook there by Starry.
01:11:25He started getting
01:11:25better action now.
01:11:27This is far too late.
01:11:31Oh my.
01:11:32Cascade of booze grows louder.
01:11:37Now, I'm coming up.
01:11:40You hear me?
01:11:41You're going to win this
01:11:49if you're not going to help him.
01:11:51You're going to do that?
01:11:53Right?
01:11:55Well, are you going to tie?
01:11:56Good one.
01:11:57Well, get out there
01:11:58and show the punches, David.
01:11:59You won't do it
01:12:00by dancing around
01:12:01in the front of the head shot.
01:12:03You've got to touch the gym down.
01:12:04Get in there.
01:12:05Let's get out.
01:12:06Let the tear out.
01:12:07You've got two punches.
01:12:09Don't hit your arm.
01:12:10Don't hit your arm.
01:12:10Don't hit your arm.
01:12:11Don't hit your arm.
01:12:11Don't hit your arm.
01:12:12Don't hit your arm.
01:12:12Don't hit your arm.
01:12:13You double the ball.
01:12:14Don't hit your arm.
01:12:14You've been a bully with him.
01:12:15What is he doing?
01:12:16Corners, 10 seconds.
01:12:18Good last round, Daniel.
01:12:20Stats out.
01:12:22I think I heard Gordon Holmes ask Starry,
01:12:28are you going to try?
01:12:30Well, I hope so.
01:12:31What happened?
01:12:32Are you going to try?
01:12:33He asked him.
01:12:34Well, both fighters have gone 12 rounds three times.
01:12:37They're both 3-0.
01:12:37Both of Starry's last two fights went the distance.
01:12:41Looks like he'll make it three in a row.
01:12:42But this time, he's about to end up the loser.
01:12:45Yeah, they don't have that fire.
01:12:47You know, in the old days in the garden,
01:12:49they used to bet right at ringside.
01:12:51When the betting was that the fight would go the distance,
01:12:53and the bettors were all excited because they would start screaming,
01:12:57Fight like brothers!
01:12:58Fight like brothers!
01:12:59This is the whole 12 rounds of Fight like Brothers!
01:13:01They didn't have to holler here.
01:13:03They had a distance fight right from the beginning.
01:13:05Unfortunately so.
01:13:07Stop boxing! Stop boxing!
01:13:08Watch the back of the head.
01:13:09Don't turn your back of the head.
01:13:11Box!
01:13:12Some more WWF tactics there.
01:13:15There goes the cut again around the right eye of Starry.
01:13:17It opens up and streaks down the right cheek.
01:13:21Yeah, that left hand's finding a little bit of a home right near the cut.
01:13:25Champion not being as effective as he wanted to,
01:13:27but effective enough to do what I think should be a convincing decision.
01:13:31Last couple of rounds have been the better rounds for Starry,
01:13:33but he is, like I said, far too late to make a difference.
01:13:37There's no question Calzaghe is winning the fight in convincing fashion,
01:13:41but this is not exactly what he had in mind
01:13:45in terms of impressing the American and worldwide audience.
01:13:50And the crowd here, the sellout crowd at the MEN Arena.
01:13:56Calzaghe's nicked up a little bit around the eyes as well.
01:13:58He's never been cut.
01:13:59He is now.
01:14:00He's got a little nick on the number one eye.
01:14:04Stop boxing!
01:14:05Short ass.
01:14:06Passed the midway point of the final round
01:14:08for the WBO Super Middleweight Championship.
01:14:10Well, you got the feeling they can fight another 12 rounds,
01:14:13it wouldn't be any different.
01:14:14It'd be the whole thing.
01:14:15The exception of the eye.
01:14:16Yeah, southpaws are always very awkward,
01:14:18and this is a very quick and awkward southpaw.
01:14:20So you have to feel for Starry if you're a fighter who's orthodox,
01:14:23know what kind of difficulties going through with the punches and the counters.
01:14:29No shots.
01:14:30No shots.
01:14:33Less than a minute remaining in the 12th round.
01:14:35Oh, many good ex-champions around tonight.
01:14:43One of my favorites, marvelous Marvin Hagler,
01:14:46was a left-hander, was from Boston,
01:14:48and nobody in the world wanted to fight him.
01:14:51What great fights he put up.
01:14:52One of the all-time greats.
01:14:55I believe he won the title over here in England, didn't he?
01:14:57With Alan Minter.
01:14:58We met him at the lobby today, by the way.
01:15:00Now living in Italy.
01:15:03Here's marvelous Marvin, not Alan Minter.
01:15:0720 seconds to go of the fight.
01:15:12Joe Calzaghe was looking to put on a good show here
01:15:15under the spotlight of a worldwide American audience.
01:15:22And unfortunately for him, it did not happen.
01:15:25He'll win this fight convincingly,
01:15:27but not.
01:15:30He'll win this fight in an exciting fashion.
01:15:33And you could hear it in the background.
01:15:38That punctuates what I said.
01:15:44The ringside position checking the right eye of David Starry.
01:15:47These guys are friends.
01:15:48They go back to the amateur days.
01:15:51But unfortunately for the crowd here
01:15:53and for the crowd tuning in,
01:15:55they fought like friends.
01:15:57Not like adversaries.
01:15:59For the most part.
01:16:04So we await the decision.
01:16:06Not much mystery here.
01:16:07Joe Calzaghe of Wales.
01:16:12En route to retaining his WBO super middleweight title.
01:16:15Coming up next.
01:16:19And of course, this is why we're here as we await the decision of the first fight.
01:16:24Mike Tyson in his European debut against Englishman, British heavyweight champion.
01:16:30A guy given basically no chance, Julius Francis, in our main event.
01:16:36It's a non-title heavyweight bout.
01:16:40Calzaghe looking to make his fifth successful title defense and remain undefeated.
01:16:45He would lift his record to 28 and 0 with a W here.
01:16:48He's remaining with the 23 knockouts.
01:16:54Meanwhile, England's David Starry looks to be unsuccessful in his first world title shot.
01:17:02The British and Commonwealth super middleweight champ would slip to 22 and 2.
01:17:07His only other loss a few years ago to a fighter named Dean Francis.
01:17:13And what's in the future for Calzaghe?
01:17:15Well, word is New Jersey's Omar Sheikah could be next in line.
01:17:18Calzaghe said he's having trouble saying at the weight would prefer to move up to 175.
01:17:23His dream fight with unified light heavyweight champion, Roy Jones Jr.
01:17:27And as Ferdy and Bobby pointed out, Roy Jones, after seeing this, chomping at the bit.
01:17:33Let's go to Jimmy Lennon Jr. with the decision.
01:17:37Ladies and gentlemen, after 12 rounds of action, we have a unanimous decision.
01:17:42Here are the score totals.
01:17:44Judge at ringside, Mickey Vann, scores the bout 116 to 113.
01:17:49Judge Billy Lurch sees the bout 118 to 110.
01:17:54And judge at ringside, Roberto Ramirez, scores the bout 120 to 108.
01:18:00All three in favor of the winner and still champion, the undefeated, Joe Calzaghe.
01:18:09He got the victory, but the crowd very displeased by the lackluster, uninspired performance.
01:18:16And who's the judge that called it 116-113?
01:18:19Was that Mickey Vann?
01:18:20That's from England, Mickey Vann.
01:18:21Yeah, from England.
01:18:22He must have had relatives in both class.
01:18:24Because the others were more disparate as expected.
01:18:28118-110.
01:18:29I had 118-110.
01:18:29118-110 was pretty clear.
01:18:31119-109.
01:18:32Yeah, it's...
01:18:34Those are all reasonable.
01:18:36But Mickey Vann, for some reason, from England, saw it closer, 116 to 113.
01:18:42He had the right guy winning, though, Joe Calzaghe.
01:18:44So, once again, coming up next, our main event.
01:18:50Mike Tyson gets back in the ring against England's Julius Francis in a scheduled 10-round heavyweight bout.
01:18:57We're going to take you into the dressing room of Mike Tyson, who could very well have a March 25th date with Lou Savarese or Shannon Briggs at the New Jersey Meadowlands, depending upon his behavior tonight.
01:19:09Also, he's got to reapply for his New Jersey boxing license.
01:19:13As you can see, things very calm there.
01:19:15Stacey McKinley doing some last-second preparation in front of Tyson.
01:19:20Then a possible June fight with another British fighter, Herbie Hyde, perhaps here in England again.
01:19:24And then, who knows, maybe Lennox Lewis.
01:19:27Let's get it over to Jim Gray, June.
01:19:28Jim Gray right now.
01:19:29All right.
01:19:30Thank you very much, Steve.
01:19:31Joe, you controlled the entire fight, but it didn't seem to be pleasing to the fans.
01:19:35Are you disappointed at all in your performance?
01:19:37Well, firstly, I'd like to say that I've been out of the ring for a long time.
01:19:41Obviously, a lot of ring rust there.
01:19:43But, you know, David Starr, he's only been beaten once.
01:19:45He's come prepared, hungry fighter.
01:19:46Basically, it was a clash of styles.
01:19:48You know, from the off, he just waited for me just to tie me up.
01:19:51That's the only way you could have won the full 12 rounds, to be honest.
01:19:54I try to get my punches off.
01:19:55So, the combination of styles and the combination of not being in the ring since June added to, for me, not being at my best tonight.
01:20:02Where do you go from here?
01:20:03Do you want Shaker?
01:20:04You talked about moving up.
01:20:05Maybe Roy Jones.
01:20:06Would you be ready for somebody like him?
01:20:08Well, basically, I'm a lot better fighter than what you've seen here tonight.
01:20:10You know, like I said, styles make fights.
01:20:14But, like I said, I'm a bit of ring rust.
01:20:15I want to get back in the ring as soon as we can discuss it.
01:20:17We're going to get back in the ring as soon as possible.
01:20:19I'm going to keep busy this year.
01:20:20I want unification fights.
01:20:21I'm the best fighter in the super middleweight division, and I'm out to prove it.
01:20:24I wasn't at my best tonight, but I went comfortably against a good fighter.
01:20:26No new injuries tonight?
01:20:27The hand's okay?
01:20:29The back's okay?
01:20:30And so forth?
01:20:30Everything's okay.
01:20:31Everything's okay.
01:20:31It's a clash of styles.
01:20:33Mixed you a bit of ring rust.
01:20:34I'm a bit disappointed.
01:20:34I wanted to knock the guy out.
01:20:36You know, maybe I should have.
01:20:37Like I said, frankly, I'm going to be a bit critical.
01:20:39I feel like I'm going to be critical because I set myself high standards.
01:20:41And it wasn't the best of me tonight.
01:20:43But next time, I promise you, it'll be a different fighter.
01:20:45Do you want to go to the United States and fight now?
01:20:47You've had a couple of cancellations there.
01:20:48Do you want to go into the States now?
01:20:49Most definitely.
01:20:50It's my dream to go to America and show the American public.
01:20:53You know, Wales and Britain got a fantastic, the best fight in the world.
01:20:56I wasn't at my best, and I'm a bit disappointed.
01:20:58But at the end of the day, I won the fight.
01:20:59I won the fight not being at my best.
01:21:01But it'll be a different fight next time.
01:21:02You know, it shook off the cobwebs.
01:21:05The guy just wanted to survive.
01:21:06You know, basically, he was waiting, holding on.
01:21:08And that was his only way to get through the 12 rounds.
01:21:10All right, Joe.
01:21:11Congratulations tonight.
01:21:12Thanks a lot.
01:21:12Thank you very much.
01:21:13All right.
01:21:13Back to you, Steve.
01:21:14Thanks very much, Jim.
01:21:15A self-admitted, disappointing Joe Calzaghi.
01:21:19Well, we go to the final countdown to Mike Tyson.
