00:00Hi!
00:01Come on!
00:02Come on!
00:03Come on!
00:04Come on!
00:05Sit, sit.
00:06Sit on down!
00:07Sit on down!
00:08I gotta say.
00:09I gotta say, you guys, normally Cam got the most going on with his fit, but I think you
00:29might be outnumbered today.
00:30I'm the son of the day.
00:31This a light day.
00:32You look like you just walked out of sinners or something.
00:35No, no, no, no.
00:36See, you tried it.
00:37That's right.
00:38What?
00:39See, I just tried to emulate me making a message with my outfit.
00:44You know what I'm saying?
00:45I get it out the mud, huh?
00:48Don't let the...
00:49Listen, I had to get it out the mud today, but we gonna have fun today.
00:52We sure are.
00:53We gonna have fun.
00:54So, uh, make sure you sit back, relax, and turn up.
00:59That's right.
01:00Uh, listen, in all of the excitement of this beautiful crowd, I forgot to say, welcome
01:05to 106 in Sports, where we, yes, where we are counting down these top five moments in
01:11sports that matter to the culture.
01:13I am Ashley Nicole Moss.
01:14And I am Cam Newton.
01:16Outside of the beautiful crowd that we have tonight, we also have a packed show as well,
01:21because tennis royalty Taylor Townstead is in the building.
01:24Oh, yeah.
01:25Yeah.
01:26And to solve, you know, my dog, playing a part of the one and only, DeMarcus Boogie Cousins
01:33is here as well.
01:34Yes.
01:35And also, you guys, um, have the same nickname, Boogie.
01:38Boogie.
01:39Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:40Boogie, Boogie, Boogie.
01:41It's gonna be going down the day.
01:43So, please act accordingly, Ashley.
01:45You're already on strike one.
01:46All right?
01:47I have no problem getting strike two and three.
01:50Listen, plus a lot more.
01:52But before we get started with the countdown.
01:54That's right, too.
01:55Just, just, just, just, because you're trying to, you're trying to beat off me on national
01:59TV, huh?
02:00Huh?
02:01But before we get started with the countdown, here are some of our favorite highlights
02:05from this week.
02:06This past weekend, Fam U in Alabama A&M gave us a 2-H1.
02:10Bam pulled out a 26-23 win behind a big day from R.J. Johnson.
02:15The third, he threw for 219.
02:19Now, dang, you couldn't get one more yard to get the 300?
02:22Oh, block?
02:23Ah!
02:24But he made it up with three touchdowns.
02:26Uh, the girls in the box also gave us a straight-up banger on Sunday, and Josh Allen
02:31did what Josh Allen does best, and that is put on an absolute show, breaking another
02:36one of Cam Newton's records.
02:38No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
02:43It's okay.
02:44It is okay.
02:45And I'm not gonna be the one that's gonna hate.
02:48I'm gonna be the one to congratulate.
02:50We love that.
02:51Come on!
02:52After weeks of waiting in questions and nonstop controversy, Shador Sanders finally got his
03:00first real taste of the NFL.
03:02We know you had some strong feelings about what you saw, what you didn't see, the position
03:08that the Browns are not putting Shador in.
03:11Do you want to give us a little bit of a sprinkling on your thought process?
03:15You can say all the right things in front of these cameras, but I don't listen to those
03:20things if you're showing me different.
03:23Kevin Stefanski for me has shown time and time again that he does not want Shador Sanders
03:28to succeed.
03:30And it's evident when reports has it that the offensive line, that was the first time
03:36that he got reps with them in a live game?
03:40Hold on.
03:41Hold on.
03:42When you look at what Shador Sanders brings to the NFL platform, you look at what Shador
03:47Sanders brings to the Cleveland Browns.
03:50It's evident that he is extremely talented, but it still is needed when you need reps,
03:56when you need help.
03:57And I don't think he's getting that.
03:59Not adequately.
04:00So then you start to say, Kevin Stefanski says publicly, well, Dylan Gabriel is still our
04:07guy.
04:08He's still having even clear concussion protocol.
04:11This is true.
04:12Don't tell me what you think I want to hear.
04:15Or like my daughter said, don't tell me what you thought I wanted to hear.
04:19Huh?
04:20Tell me, like show me.
04:21I'm from Missouri by way of Atlanta, Georgia.
04:23Wakanda.
04:24Huh?
04:25I go about what you show.
04:26Then you start to say, well, he didn't get no reps with the first team.
04:29Well, then let me, let me, let me, let me, let me, let me, let me, let me, let me bring
04:34it back even to more.
04:35I'm trying to take you somewhere now.
04:36I'm on the ride.
04:37I'm on the ride.
04:38The insufficiencies that Shador is being dealt versus what Dylan Gabriel.
04:42He said he don't get no reps with the first team because Dylan Gabriel need all the reps,
04:45right?
04:46Well, you just had Joe Flacco early in the season, right?
04:48Right.
04:49Did Dylan Gabriel get any reps as a second team?
04:52He did.
04:53As a second team quarterback, he got first team reps when Joe Flacco was the quote unquote
04:59starter.
05:00So don't tell me you don't give a backup opportunity when you give him a backup opportunity when
05:06the situations was different.
05:08Let the church say amen.
05:09Amen.
05:10Stop me when I, when I, when I tell a lie.
05:13I will say though, points were made absolutely, but we cannot negate the fact that although
05:19it wasn't the most ideal situation, his dad, Deion Sanders was extremely emotional seeing
05:24his son get his NFL star.
05:26And he said that he cried when he watched it.
05:28So although it wasn't ideal, it did mean a lot to Deion to see his son out there living
05:34his dream.
05:35So I think that's a positive in the situation.
05:36No?
05:37If I'm Deion Sanders, I see a situation where like, yes, is he playing?
05:42Yes.
05:43But not like in these situations because whether it's management, whether it's a head coach,
05:49I don't give a doggone what it is.
05:51Somebody ain't looking out for my son the way somebody else looking out for somebody else
05:56son.
05:57Let the church say amen.
05:58Amen.
05:59Cool.
06:00All right.
06:01Well, look, uh, bars were dropped.
06:03And if you could believe it, that's not even our countdown story.
06:06We are now going to get into the countdown.
06:08So are you guys ready?
06:09All right.
06:10Okay.
06:11Okay.
06:12Here we go.
06:13Today's number five stories about love and basketball.
06:15Clay Thompson is clapping back at people who have something to say about his relationship
06:20with Megan.
06:21Yes.
06:22Clay Thompson shut down former NBA players, Jason Williams and Patrick Beverly after they
06:30claimed his relationship with Meg the stallion was hurting his game.
06:34Clay called their comments, quote, disgusting and disturbing.
06:35And he's making it very clear that Meg isn't the problem, the way people talk about women
06:44is.
06:45I know that's right.
06:47I know that's right.
06:48It wasn't just what was said, but how it was said.
06:52Jason Williams said this on his Instagram, quote, it only takes one P.U.S.
06:57other letters to drag a battleship across the desert.
07:01That's how powerful it is.
07:03Then Clay then responded on his Instagram saying, referring to my girlfriend as a, is
07:08so disgusting and disturbing, especially from someone who played in the NBA.
07:12How would y'all feel if I referred to your wives in such a way?
07:15He added Pat Bev and said, do better, fellas.
07:18Very disappointed.
07:19First of all, so obviously this story just isn't about celebrity dating.
07:27It's about disrespect.
07:28And I know, and Cam, you probably will remember this reference.
07:32It seems as though that women are given the brunt of when an athlete is not doing well,
07:39it's an easy target.
07:40Oh, it's because his girl, it's because his wife.
07:42You remember the Jessica Simpson curse when Tony Romo was dating her on the Dallas Cowboys.
07:47Every bad game Tony Romo had, it was Jessica Simpson's fault.
07:52Every bad game Klay Thompson had, it's Meg Thee Stallion's fault.
07:56Let me make this very clear for people who may not be as engulfed in the NBA as I am.
08:02Klay Thompson has had two major injuries.
08:05Not one, but two.
08:07Klay Thompson's also over the age of 30, which is young in everyday life.
08:12But in basketball years, it's kind of old and he's getting up there and he's getting
08:15older every season.
08:16OK, so Jesus himself couldn't make Klay Thompson play better than he's playing.
08:21So it's real low hanging fruit to say that his relationship with Meg is a distraction
08:26and it's this and it's that.
08:27Last time I checked, Pat Bev was playing overseas.
08:30He's not even in the NBA.
08:31So Pat Bev might want to pull out of this one and mind his business.
08:36I'm just saying.
08:37Yeah, you can't say that.
08:39Just saying.
08:40I can and I did.
08:43What was said, was it wrong?
08:46This is what I think.
08:48At no way, shape, form, am I condoning calling a woman out of their name?
08:53Mm-hmm.
08:54At no shape, form.
08:55Absolutely.
08:56Am I agreeing to call a woman out of their name?
08:58OK.
08:59See, see, man, you got to understand, you got to make your point very clear.
09:04There's a but here.
09:05At no way, shape, form.
09:06I heard you the first time.
09:08Am I telling that calling a woman outside of her name is OK?
09:13What's the but here?
09:14But he ain't doing nothing but doing bro talk.
09:18But you bro talking on a public platform.
09:20Which is cool.
09:21The only issue that I have, you don't refer to her or her goods as any type of explicit.
09:29The message is skewed because at no shape, form.
09:33I heard you.
09:34But bros still talk about bros.
09:39How you do it and to be clear as OK, that's accepted.
09:44That's not accepted.
09:45I felt like they got too comfortable.
09:47And why would their team give a sign off to say, OK, we're going to let that fly.
09:53No, no, no.
09:54Put it out on Twitter.
09:55Put it out on Instagram.
09:56Put it out on YouTube.
09:57No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
09:58You got too comfortable there, bro.
10:00But let me ask you a question.
10:01But to think that that will stop the debate of when dudes talk about dudes or certain situations in sports.
10:09No, that's not.
10:10I'm not saying it.
10:11If this were a regular shmegular person, but dude, you played in the NBA.
10:15Yeah.
10:16You should know better than that.
10:17Like, let me ask you a question.
10:18Let's shift it to the NFL.
10:20OK.
10:21Is it Sierra's fault Russell Wilson was benched?
10:24No.
10:25Is it Sierra's fault Russell Wilson isn't the Russell Wilson we saw in Seattle?
10:28Is it her fault that he wasn't what he was in Pittsburgh now?
10:32Is it her fault that he isn't what he is now in New York and he's not playing?
10:37You know what I'm saying?
10:39So, like, it's low-hanging fruit to blame the wife, to blame the girlfriend, to blame the significant other, the partner.
10:47It's just low-hanging fruit.
10:48You know dang well it is not Meg's fault that Klay's not playing well.
10:53The man got an Achilles and an ACL injury.
10:56He's over 30 years old.
10:57It's hard out here when you get older in sports.
11:00You know?
11:01Your game's just not the same.
11:03Blaming Meg is wet.
11:05No, it's not you know, but you know.
11:09I hear your point.
11:11Bros is gonna talk regardless.
11:15And just like women have their conversations, dudes gonna have their conversations too.
11:21Listen, that's my point.
11:22Two things can be true.
11:25Well, we want to know what you think is true.
11:28So, for you at home, let us know what you think.
11:30Is Meg affecting Klay's game or is that just foul play?
11:34Join the conversation using the hashtag 106inSports.
11:37Don't go anywhere because still on the show tonight, we have your favorite tennis player.
11:42It is Atlanta's very own Taylor Townsend of the building.
11:45And the always outspoken DeMarcus Boogie Cousins is here as well.
11:49Don't move.
11:50More 106inSports on the way.
11:53To see news up next in the world of sports, go to BET.com for our next Up Series presented by Jeep Grand Cherokee.
12:02Welcome back, everybody, to 106inSports, where culture meets the game.
12:15Who's ready to foul our first game?
12:17Look, one of the most inspiring athletes in the world of sports on and off the court.
12:23Let's hear ATL make some noise for your very own Taylor Townsend!
12:28How are you doing?
12:50How are you doing, Sweetie Past and Honey Bunches of Bowls?
12:53Okay, I'm doing good!
12:55You're welcome.
12:56You're welcome.
12:57I just appreciate, get right into it, man.
13:01I think what you've been able to display as a strong black woman has been something that us, as black people, can smile and say thank you for the representation.
13:16Absolutely.
13:16I appreciate that.
13:18I know you want to talk about this, but we saw that front and center at the U.S. Open, Cam.
13:24Yeah, and it wasn't, I don't even want to say her name.
13:28The quote was, no class, no education, and it was one of the things that the world saw.
13:36Yeah.
13:37As if to say she was trying to check you, but, oh, you big bang.
13:43That's honestly what I thought.
13:44I was like, oh, you're mad for real.
13:47But I honestly have been, I grew up being told, let your racket talk.
13:52And that's what I said.
13:54It's not the first time that this has happened, not the second, not the third.
13:59With her specifically or just in general?
14:00With her specifically, even with other players.
14:02But honestly, like, she picked the right one.
14:04It wasn't even just black people or black women.
14:07It was like Americans, too, because there was that thing she said about America, and everyone was like, wait, hold on now.
14:12Yeah, like, what?
14:13Slow down now.
14:13When you hear these words come out of black press and mouth, all right, now.
14:18Yeah.
14:19It could go any way.
14:21It was a beautiful fire, like, on so many different levels, and I think that was the crazy thing about it.
14:25And I think that's the beautiful thing about tennis, too, is like, when you have a game that intertwines America with all these different countries,
14:31it's like America really rallies behind their own in moments like that, and I thought that was dope to see.
14:36I love hearing you talk about life after motherhood and that adjustment and, you know, falling in love with your body again and how honest you've been,
14:45because that's something that Naomi Osaka has been very honest about, and she's, you know, been honest about her struggles with postpartum and how that's affected her game.
14:52You two were on a boat recently, and the video went vile of you guys doing the Nicki Minaj challenge, which we love to see,
14:58but I want you to kind of talk to me about that friendship, that relationship, but also how important it is to kind of knock down that barrier.
15:06Like, there's enough space for all of us, and we all can kind of help each other in that space, because only us as black women in spaces where there's not that many of us can understand each other's struggle.
15:17Yeah, I mean, it's funny that, you know, you say that because the invite was so random, like, we had spoken to each other maybe once or twice back before this trip.
15:30Wow.
15:30Yeah, and, you know, one of the times we had a very, like, intimate moment in the locker room in Cincinnati after she had just come off the court,
15:39and I just went up to her and hugged her, and I was like, you're going to be all right.
15:42Literally, that's all I said.
15:44She was crying.
15:44You know, I could tell that she wasn't happy.
15:46I was like, girl, you're going to be fine.
15:48That's literally, like, what I said.
15:50And so she invited me to the vacation, and I was just like, at first, it was the same thing.
15:55Like, kind of weird, like, I don't know you like that.
15:58Right, right, right.
15:59Real, like, I was, yeah, like, what we got going on here, you know, because it was so random, and that also has, like, never happened.
16:06But when I went and, like, literally told her, I was like, I'm telling you, we're going to be in the same places, and I'm going to come watch you play.
16:15She said, yeah, me too.
16:16It's not often that you see two people in the same draws of the same tournament, different places in the event, going and supporting each other.
16:25And I was like, I really feel like this is an opportunity for us to, like, shake the room a little bit.
16:30Yeah, and, like, be front and center, but it's not an act.
16:33It's so authentic and genuinely, like, I want to support you, and you want to support me.
16:37All right, well, Taylor's not going anywhere because we're still counting down our top five moments.
16:43I hope everybody is ready for number four.
16:45Okay.
16:46Yeah.
16:47It is all about a new documentary that has been going viral on social media.
16:52Now, even if you don't know who this player is, now, I do, being a New Yorker, because he was king in New York, the headline is very startling.
17:00All over social media, the clip and headline to the doc says, from $20 million, NBA career to moving back into the projects, and it's about Sebastian Telford.
17:10Athletes, at some point, you stop playing, and the money looks a lot different.
17:15And there are some people who make that adjustment, and they make that adjustment seamlessly, and they're kind of prepared for it, for life after football, after tennis, after basketball.
17:25And then there are people who struggle with life after that.
17:28What is your standpoint on this, or your take on this, rather?
17:31You know, I can speak on my experience.
17:35I haven't had an endorsement.
17:37I just got a racket deal for the first time in eight years.
17:40I'm self-funding my clothing line to sponsor myself.
17:46I started that in May, and I have, for the last eight years, nine years, I've bought my own clothes, shoes.
17:56And, you know, I am just now getting in a position where deals are coming in.
18:02And with tennis, if you don't have that backing or those sponsorships or whatever, you're literally living off of your prize money.
18:11So, what you make...
18:13You have to win.
18:14And you have to, yeah.
18:15What you make, and if you're not, you're in the red.
18:18Right.
18:18And so, my output was very, is very, very heavy, because a lot of, all of my expenses come out of my pocket.
18:28Cam, you made that transition.
18:31Yep.
18:31Taylor talked about thinking about that transition way before the time is ready to come.
18:36I wonder, though, when did you have the conversation with yourself, with your team, that I got to really start thinking about life after football?
18:44And how did you prepare yourself to be in a lucrative position after you stopped playing in the NFL?
18:49I just want to educate people to how a situation like this happens.
18:54Okay.
18:55Because people find out, or they see $20 million.
18:59How you got $20 million and you back in the project?
19:03Not all on the bank, of course, when you get that 20 M's.
19:06Sometimes it may.
19:07Sometimes it is.
19:08But the old T word that us people need to understand, taxes.
19:15That's number one.
19:16And number two, if your output is way more than your input, your output will be the reason why you go broke.
19:27All right, Taylor.
19:28We want to play a little game that we call, and I need the crowd's help to repeat after me.
19:33It's called start.
19:34Start.
19:35Bench.
19:36Bench.
19:36Train.
19:37Train.
19:38And we're going to walk over to the fan zone to do that.
19:41All right.
19:42Let's go.
19:43Okay, okay.
19:47Hello.
19:49Look, okay, so this is how the game works.
19:51We're going to give you three names, and you're going to start one, bench one, or trade one.
19:57Round one.
19:58These are our options.
20:00Four doubles, but new school.
20:01We got Coco Gauff.
20:02Okay.
20:03We got Naomi Osaka.
20:05Okay.
20:05And we have Flo and Steven.
20:07That's tough.
20:07I'm going to start Coco.
20:09Okay.
20:09She's still playing doubles right now.
20:11I think I would bench Sloan.
20:14I've played with Sloan before.
20:16We've done well together.
20:18Yeah.
20:19And I love Naomi.
20:20I'm sorry, but I got to try.
20:21I was about to say, y'all just was on vacation together.
20:24Hey, man.
20:24A good boat partner doesn't make a good double partner.
20:27Yes, because I've actually asked her to play, and she's like, yeah, nah.
20:31Our last category.
20:33Cam, you're going to like this one.
20:34Who do you call for a clapback?
20:36We have Atlanta's very own NeNe Leakes.
20:38Queens' very own 50 Cent.
20:41And we got the boogie down Bronx' very own Cardi B.
20:45Okay.
20:46For a clapback?
20:48For a clapback.
20:48You got a clapback.
20:49I got a troll, a hater.
20:51Okay.
20:51Anyone.
20:52Could have used them at the U.S. Open to give you some backup.
20:55Hot take.
20:55I'm taking 50 Cent.
20:5750 Cent.
20:57Yeah, 50 Cent.
20:58Not even.
20:59Starting 50 Cent.
20:59I'm starting.
21:00He's a professional troll.
21:00I'm starting him.
21:01And also, he's a businessman, so he understands when it's too much.
21:06Like, okay, I can go there.
21:08Yeah.
21:08But then he knows kind of like how to pull it back sometimes.
21:10I've never seen that.
21:12I know.
21:13I ain't never seen 50 Cent.
21:14I mean, the shots might hit.
21:16The shots hit.
21:16No.
21:18All of them hit.
21:19Okay, okay.
21:20He over here trying to sledgehammer with an A every time.
21:23Well, that's who I want on my team.
21:25So, I'm going to bitch Cardi.
21:28Okay.
21:29And I'm going to trade NeNe.
21:30Okay.
21:31That's what I think.
21:34Well, Taylor, look, before we let you go, anything that you have coming up that we should keep
21:37our eyes and ears open for?
21:39What's in the works?
21:40Give us a little sneak peek.
21:43In the near future, I'm just excited to spend some time with my son.
21:46I mean, I was gone for seven weeks.
21:48And so, like, just being able to be home and be settled before having to pack up and be in
21:53the suitcase.
21:53But my first tournament, I'm starting down in Melbourne for the Australian Open.
21:57And down under.
21:58Yeah, down under.
21:59Miss Townsend, thank you.
22:03Yes.
22:04Please keep going.
22:05For sure.
22:06Because it's not a lot of us that's out there that can really resonate.
22:10Yeah.
22:10And the fact that you stayed true and are staying true to yourself, chef's kiss.
22:16Thank you, darling.
22:16Atlanta, make some noise for you guys, y'all.
22:22The 4106 in sports is on the way.
22:26Make sure you do not move because DeMarcus Boogie Cousins is in the building and you do
22:32not want to miss this conversation.
22:40Oh.
22:47Welcome back, everybody, to 106 in sports where culture meets the game.
22:52And Pam had to leave the couch to go over there to show that side of the room some love.
22:58That was all love, but this isn't because our number three topic on today's countdown is all about Texas A&M versus South Carolina.
23:06They had a moment that took over the weekend when a Texas State trooper was caught on video bumping into South Carolina players in the tunnel.
23:16Then, stepping toward them like they wanted or he wanted the smoke.
23:21Now, the clip went instantly viral and had everybody talking, including LeBron, who called for his job.
23:29LeBron James reposted the clip and said that the troopers should be suspended immediately, calling the whole thing, quote, corny
23:35and questioning why an officer would escalate a moment with college kids to begin with.
23:40Stephen A. Smith also tweeted that the incident was, quote, unacceptable and that the officer also needed to be held accountable
23:49and that the optics of the arms trooper confronting players are a very bad look for everyone involved.
23:58Cam, I will say this.
23:59He is also very lucky that those kids were raised correctly and didn't retaliate.
24:06Because if someone pushes you, your first instinct is to kind of defend yourself and push back.
24:12Those kids took the higher route and walked away.
24:14This is what we've seen in recipes to the likes of the George Floyds of the world.
24:20Right.
24:21Rest in peace to the individuals that were senselessly killed because the police brutality that they had the authority to do so.
24:29They took it too far.
24:31When you have individuals like Colin Kaepernick taking a knee, not to be rebellious, it's to bring light to an issue that is still evident in this country.
24:41So you can't tell me in College Station, Texas, that that specific officer thinks that African-Americans are in favor?
24:52There's definitely an inferior underlining issue with him, for sure, because nobody reacts like that just unprovoked or unless that's already in their spirit.
25:02I absolutely agree with that, for sure.
25:03That's all I'm saying.
25:04It's like...
25:05Racism is still evident.
25:12But let's highlight individuals that are bad individuals.
25:16That officer is a bad individual.
25:18Absolutely.
25:19And he should not have a job.
25:20Because if he's a deputy, if he's a sheriff, if he's a person of high regard, now everybody up under him is being taught by a bad individual.
25:32And that's the issue.
25:34That's the key.
25:35So for that, it's extremely frustrating that here we are in 2025, so much has been sacrificed, even dating back to I have a dream.
25:47We're still living in a moment where bad individuals exist.
25:52And we need to control, alt, delete these bad individuals from having an opportunity to impact.
26:00Absolutely.
26:00Look, when we come back, DeMarcus Cousins is here, so don't move, because more 106 in Sports is coming up.
26:19Hello, everybody, and welcome back to 106 in Sports, where culture meets the game.
26:25We are so excited about our next guest.
26:27Let me make sure I get all these accolades correct, all right?
26:29Four-time All-Star, Olympic gold medalist, and walking double-double.
26:35Absolutely.
26:36106, make some noise for my dog, DeMarcus Boogie Cousins.
26:48How are you?
26:51How are you?
26:53There you go.
26:54Let's get it.
26:55Boogie?
26:55Boogie?
26:56You dig what I'm saying?
26:57Feel me?
26:59For people who don't know, how did you get the nickname Boogie?
27:01Walk us through that.
27:02Cam won't tell me the origin of his nickname.
27:04You never asked.
27:04I did ask.
27:05Say less.
27:06I'll give it to you after you give you the name.
27:07What's the origin of yours?
27:08I got the name Boogie my freshman year, well, my only year at Kentucky.
27:12Okay.
27:12I had a coach by the name of Raj Strickland, NBA legend.
27:16When we would describe basketball players, we were like, you know, do they got certain
27:19like Boogie in their game or something like that.
27:21So I was one of those guys he considered that had a lot of Boogie in his game.
27:25Okay.
27:25Then the name ended up sticking.
27:27Is that how you got your nickname?
27:28No, no.
27:29I had to give myself an alter ego.
27:30Of course.
27:31Because one thing about it, bro, DeMarcus can't play basketball and be effective.
27:36That's fine.
27:37You have to give yourself a license to be, okay, this is the person that's the bad guy.
27:42This is the guy that is from Atlanta.
27:45Huh?
27:46And I gave myself grace to say, okay, Cam is one person, Boogie is the other person
27:52that I'm going to give that person that grace to really be the showstopper.
27:56Did you feel that way when you were playing, that DeMarcus was one person and Boogie was
28:00a completely different person?
28:02Absolutely.
28:02Okay.
28:03You know, that's kind of part of my issue.
28:05For the most part, when the average person is watching you play or perform or, you know,
28:10do your art, they only see you in that form.
28:13So, they start to believe that's exactly who you are as a person.
28:17And I'll be the first to admit, when I'm on the floor, I'm an animal.
28:20Like, I'm ready to rip your head off.
28:22I'm going to do whatever it takes to win the game.
28:25But once, you know, once the clock hits zero and I'm off the court, like, I'm a totally
28:29different person.
28:30There's no difference than, you know, Beyonce, when she's on stage and she refers to herself
28:34as Sasha Fierce.
28:35Okay.
28:35You know what I'm saying?
28:36It's all the same thing.
28:37And, you know, when it comes to, you know, people trying to figure out who you are as a
28:41person, like I said, that can cause some sort of an issue if the person doesn't understand
28:47who you are off the floor.
28:48I had to find out the hard way.
28:50A couple years ago, we was in a creator league.
28:54So, I was like, who are I going to be there?
28:55They started listing down and listing people, this person, that person.
28:58I'm like, Boogie Cousins?
29:00I'll bet.
29:01Right?
29:02But before my team played this team, he had just got finished serving another team.
29:08It was like, yo, he damn has scored all the points.
29:11But who would be?
29:12I said, he'll never do that on me.
29:13Oh, mama now.
29:16And what did he do?
29:17Score all the points on me.
29:19Oh, mama.
29:20And I say, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
29:22So, I knew the type of way that I needed to play him was not going to be safe for that
29:27situation.
29:28I wasn't trying to be physical as much, but I wasn't trying to get embarrassed either.
29:33Which leads me to this point.
29:35A couple weeks ago, we had an individual by the name of Brittany Griner.
29:40And I asked her that same question.
29:43Could she beat Boogie Cousins in one-on-one?
29:47I definitely, I went on the record and said that I would beat DeMarcus Cousins in the game.
29:52With a referee, yes.
29:54I'm the one that's going to ask the question.
29:57Could she beat you in one-on-one?
30:00Hell no.
30:02But what would be, what would be.
30:05Short and sweet, hell no.
30:07But is there a world where you see a woman beating a man in basketball?
30:14Absolutely.
30:15But it's just not her with you?
30:17No, I'm different.
30:18Oh, okay.
30:19I'm separate.
30:19When you think about the game of basketball,
30:21it's thought about in different ways.
30:23You know, it could be thought about in the aspect of one-on-one,
30:27two-on-two, three-on-three, five-on-five, whatever the case may be.
30:30There's some people that are brilliant in the game of five-on-five
30:33and also atrocious in one-on-one at the same time.
30:36You know what I'm saying?
30:37So when you think about it like that and you break the game down like that,
30:41absolutely, I think a woman could win.
30:43Absolutely.
30:43You actually forgot to tell the full part of the story when you played Demarcus in the Creator League.
30:49He dropped you and you dropped your hat.
30:51I dropped you for sure.
30:53Okay, so hold on.
30:53Matter of fact, give me your explanation of what you mean by dropping.
30:57You hit the floor and your hat followed.
30:59No.
31:01That sound like a drop to me.
31:02No, no, no, no, no, no.
31:04Who takes a charge at the three-point line?
31:06Ooh.
31:07Listen, who takes a charge in general?
31:09I was trying to get the ball back, brother.
31:11And I was losing all type of options.
31:14So I said, let me just take a charge.
31:16You are admitting you dropped and hit the floor.
31:18No, oh, well, listen.
31:20Okay.
31:21But how I got there was different.
31:23A drop was a drop.
31:25But speaking of drop, we're going to keep it moving with our countdown because in at number two,
31:29it is all about somebody who was dropped from the Dallas Mavericks.
31:33Sheesh.
31:34We're talking about Nico Harrison.
31:35The Dallas Mavericks recently fired the GM after a disastrous run of players' trades and injuries
31:41that left the team spiraling.
31:44Most notably, the trading of Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Anthony Davis.
31:49A lot of us were just taken aback that you would trade away a player of Luka's magnitude,
31:53especially when the Dallas Mavericks were just fresh off of the Western Conference Finals.
31:58So it had a lot of people wondering if there were underlining issues between Nico and Luka.
32:05Because if you remember, everything that could possibly defame a player's reputation,
32:10his work ethic, seemed to just be coming out of the woodwork once that trade happened
32:15as a way to justify it.
32:17A lot of people were calling for Nico's job back then.
32:20And he made it seem, you remember, he went on this entire media tour.
32:23The team got better.
32:24This was a better decision.
32:26And the Mavs aren't doing that well.
32:27So what do you make of this entire situation?
32:29When it's a move this big, it's no way.
32:32It doesn't come from the higher-ups.
32:34Obviously, Nico is the GM of the Mavericks, who it was, the GM.
32:39But everybody has somebody that they have to answer to.
32:41But the issue also is there were injuries that took place.
32:45Kyrie Irving, right, for example.
32:47Anthony Davis.
32:49Now, if you add in if those things went right, would he still have a job?
32:54I do think on paper, you know, when you look at the roster after the trade, it looked good.
32:58You know, was it a championship team?
33:01That's, you know, that's still in the air.
33:02But that's the only part I don't like about the firing of Nico is he didn't really get an opportunity
33:07for his plan to, you know, come to work.
33:10Well, if you were going to fire him, the firing should have happened after Luca,
33:13not after the trade, where he doesn't get to see if the trade works or not.
33:18Like, you're already in it.
33:19You might as well stick it.
33:20You might as well see what happens.
33:21Okay.
33:21As a person who was the face of a franchise, a lottery pick,
33:26a person that really moved the needle for a franchise,
33:31when you see a situation like Ja Morant take place,
33:34explain what would be a message that you would have for a Ja.
33:38Well, one, I put my arm around him.
33:39You can tell he's in need of real veteran presence.
33:44But that's one of my issues with the league.
33:45You bring in these young talents from all types of backgrounds,
33:49and the people that are bringing the talents in don't relate to these kids
33:53from these different backgrounds.
33:54So the moment it becomes uncomfortable for, you know, the person that brought them in,
33:59they automatically get a bad label.
34:01When in actuality, you just can't relate.
34:03Our foundation is different from those coming from,
34:05we're going to just label it a PWI.
34:07Yeah.
34:08Once that situation comes to a head, it's going to always be a difference.
34:12And I think that's what we're looking at now.
34:14Yeah.
34:15Well, we want to know what you all think,
34:16so make sure you're using the hashtag 106inSports.
34:20And coming up, the number one topic, plus more,
34:23from our very own DeMarcus Cousins.
34:25Make sure you don't move, because more 106inSports is coming up.
34:39Welcome back, everybody, to 106inSports.
34:43We have reached the number one story in our countdown.
34:46But before we get into that, recently there was a story about LaMelo Ball.
34:50And when he was going through the draft process,
34:53he had sat down with the Timberwolves, and they asked him,
34:55hey, what do you want to do when you retire from the NBA?
35:00And he said, I want to be president of the United States.
35:03Right?
35:04Okay, listen, high aspirations.
35:07But they basically said that that was something they used
35:10to determine that he was not the player for their organization.
35:14They ended up drafting Anthony Edwards, which worked out phenomenal.
35:17Ant-Man, we love him, Atlanta's very own.
35:19But the question I really have for the both of you,
35:22is there too much emphasis on the ridiculous questions,
35:27the non-sports-related questions, when it comes to the draft process
35:31in determining whether or not a player is ready to either play
35:35or lead your organization?
35:36Boogie, I'll start with you.
35:37I think it's yes and no.
35:38You've got to remember, this is a billion-dollar business.
35:40So they're deciding on who they're willing to invest their money on.
35:43So they want to know everything about you,
35:45from your favorite color to your favorite food
35:47to who your favorite elementary school teacher was.
35:50It does get a bit ridiculous sometimes in the interviews,
35:53and I've witnessed it firsthand, so I know.
35:56But at the same time, it also makes sense.
35:58It's no different than qualifying for another job.
36:01Your thoughts on that, obviously a little bit different from the NBA,
36:04but it's still a draft process,
36:05and we've seen stories come out about the ridiculous questions that...
36:08Jim Harbaugh, he was with the 49ers,
36:11and he asked me,
36:14jumped, like, straight into it.
36:16You know, we sat down, shook hands, cooled.
36:18He said, hey, we drafted you, your daddy gonna be an issue?
36:22I said, what?
36:24He just came and flat-out asked me that question.
36:28And now, given the climate of the question,
36:30I went through an NCAA investigation,
36:32allegedly,
36:34and came out unscathed.
36:37But the reality of that was,
36:39they do that because they can,
36:42but I get why they do.
36:45They need to see if they're gonna get an ROI.
36:48Well, for the people who don't understand what that is,
36:50they wanna see if they're gonna get a return on their investment.
36:52You both mentioned the money involved in professional sports,
36:56which leads us to the number one topic of the week,
36:58and that is all about Steph Curry.
37:01After 13 years,
37:03he is parting ways with Under Armour,
37:05and the Curry brand is going independent.
37:09When you see this type of situation happen
37:12with player representation,
37:14do you see more players getting involved
37:16with representing themselves from the apparel side?
37:19I think it is something that's happening.
37:21There's been a few guys that kind of come out on their own
37:24and try to create their own brand.
37:25I think the biggest right now
37:27would probably be somebody like Jalen Brown
37:28with his own brand in Boston.
37:30But I think it's a dope thing
37:32compared to the music business.
37:35Demarcus, before we let you go,
37:37I know you're now in the media game,
37:39and you said you are loving it.
37:41How do you balance being an athlete
37:43and having to critique athletes?
37:46And is it ever uncomfortable for you
37:48because you are part of the brotherhood,
37:49you don't say certain things?
37:51Can I ask it?
37:52Go ahead, ask it.
37:53Have you ever got the he's bitter or he's hating
37:57from players?
37:59From a player?
38:00Never.
38:00It's coming.
38:01It probably is.
38:02I'm telling you.
38:03No, I believe it.
38:03And I've seen you also have to kind of go through that.
38:05I'm there.
38:06Like my man back there in the back was like,
38:08yo, bro, I'm Team Gilly over here.
38:10We Philadelphia Eagles fans.
38:11And I'm like, bro.
38:12I am a Jalen Hurts fan, by the way.
38:14Roll Tide.
38:15I don't appreciate that.
38:16Oh.
38:17Nah, nah.
38:18I'm glad we went there.
38:19What college did you go to, brother?
38:21I went to Kentucky.
38:22Where was I born?
38:23So he set tripping those.
38:24You know what I'm saying?
38:26You got to pick a set at Burb.
38:27Auburn or Alabama.
38:28Yeah, brother.
38:29It's all right.
38:30We beat them, too.
38:31You know what I'm saying?
38:31Y'all got one rinky-dink.
38:32That's OK.
38:33Rinky-dink, stinky-dink is all the matter.
38:35That thing still blinky-dink.
38:37Look, that's going to do it for us here at 106 in sports.
38:40Big thank you to our guests
38:41first and foremost.
38:42Taylor Townsend, Atlanta's very own.
38:44And DeMarcus Boogie Cousins, make sure you hit us up
38:47using the hashtag 106 in sports.
38:49As usual, Cam, you have the last word.
38:51Oh!
38:52Everybody stand up.
38:53Everybody stand up.
38:56Hey, in this good faith of speaking life into each other,
38:59I would challenge everybody to repeat after me.
39:02Hey, you.
39:03Hey, you.
39:04Hey, you.
39:05Hey, you.
39:06I love you.
39:07I love you.
39:08I love you.
39:09And as I always say,
39:11one hand out,
39:12one finger,
39:13one pinky,
39:14one thumb,
39:15all together,
39:16one love.
