02:49Hello, all!
02:51Hello!
02:52I really want to just hug Divine for most of the night.
02:55LAUGHTER
02:56It's so furry!
02:57It is!
02:58Yeah, whenever you want.
03:00Yeah, no, it is the sort of thing.
03:01If you wear that at a party by the end of the night,
03:03everyone's just clinging.
03:04Yep, that's the point.
03:05Gorgeous!
03:06So, welcome back to everybody!
03:08Yeah!
03:09Yeah!
03:10And Hugh and Kate, obviously you know each other,
03:11you've worked together, we're about to talk about the movie.
03:13Yeah!
03:14But Ben and Kate, you've known each other for a long time.
03:16Like...
03:17Yes!
03:1825...
03:19Like a wand.
03:2030?
03:21Yeah.
03:2230 years, I think.
03:23Oh my goodness.
03:24Yeah.
03:25You guys were dating for how long?
03:27LAUGHTER
03:28LAUGHTER
03:29LAUGHTER
03:30LAUGHTER
03:31LAUGHTER
03:32LAUGHTER
03:33Oh, Graham.
03:34All right.
03:35Let's draw a showbiz veil.
03:37LAUGHTER
03:38By the way, my daughter and I bond over two things.
03:41Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.
03:42Love it.
03:43And musical theatre.
03:45And one of our favourite shows is Les Mis.
03:47And we both bond over how much we love you...
03:50Yes.
03:51..in Les Mis and how incredible you were as Valjean.
03:53Yes.
03:54And that's one of the things we do together.
03:55Should we sing, like, the confrontation, you know...
03:57Well, I was just saying how many of my daughter watch Severance?
04:00Right, right, right.
04:01Right.
04:02Really?
04:03Said they are, man, thanks.
04:04Wow!
04:05APPLAUSE
04:07Because people may not know that you, of course,
04:09are the man behind Severance.
04:12Yeah.
04:13This year got a record-breaking 27 Emmy nominations.
04:16Wow.
04:17I mean, that's amazing.
04:18It's so good.
04:20It's so insanely good.
04:22I agree.
04:23Don't you direct every single episode?
04:24I don't.
04:25I don't.
04:26OK.
04:27I directed about half the episodes last season.
04:28Oh, wow.
04:29And now you're not going to direct any more.
04:30Is that right?
04:31That...
04:32You...
04:33Do your research.
04:34I...
04:35No, not next season.
04:36I'm still producing a part of it, yes.
04:38Oh, OK.
04:39So, and the next season is being written or...?
04:41Yes.
04:42Yes.
04:43So it's not shot yet?
04:44You're asking all the tough questions.
04:45OK.
04:46Yes, we are in process.
04:47Are we in it?
04:48Is this it?
04:49We're in it right now.
04:50We're being negotiated right now.
04:52And someone who took an award away since we last met her,
04:55Divine Joy Randolph, an Oscar winner, goddammit!
04:58APPLAUSE
04:59No, I felt like you had a proud relative,
05:05because you were on the show talking about the holdovers.
05:06I love that movie.
05:07Yeah.
05:08So when you won, it was just...
05:09And it is that kind of showbiz dream.
05:12Was it...
05:13Did it feel how you thought it would feel?
05:15Oh, I...
05:16It was so out of body at that point.
05:19And, um, they...
05:20Everyone had said to me, like,
05:22don't write anything down.
05:24I was like, no, I thought that's what everyone does.
05:26They were like, no, just speak from the heart.
05:28And so because of it, I blacked out.
05:30I don't remember anything.
05:34Yeah.
05:35And then, were you very sensible and kind of like,
05:38yes, I have my Oscar.
05:39I must go to bed now.
05:40Or did you go wild?
05:41No.
05:42Because I had been good that whole time.
05:44Oh.
05:45Mm-hmm.
05:46So you partied all night.
05:47Oh, yeah.
05:48Still going.
05:49Still going.
05:50Another party.
05:51Another party.
05:52Next club.
05:53I'm wearing my hugging dress.
05:54Yeah.
05:55Let's go.
05:56Listen, let's crack on with our first movie tonight.
05:59Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson are together in Song Song Blue.
06:03It'll be in cinemas from New Year's Day.
06:06Before we talk about it, here's a taste of the trailer.
06:10I'm not a songwriter.
06:11I'm not a sex symbol, but I am an entertainer.
06:15I don't want to be a hairdresser.
06:17I want to sing.
06:18I want to dance.
06:19I want to be able to sing.
06:20Look at me.
06:21I made it.
06:22Look at the night.
06:23You're supposed to be Loretta Lynn.
06:25Oh, oh, Patsy Cline.
06:26My boobs were just a bit bigger.
06:28I could be Dolly.
06:29You're a blonde?
06:30Oh, boy, am I?
06:32You know who you would be perfect for?
06:38Neil Diamond.
06:39We fill it up with only two.
06:42We should call ourselves Lightning and Thunder.
06:45That is not very professional of me,
06:47but I've been wanting to do it for like a whole...
06:50You're gonna do a Neil Diamond show?
06:52Mm-mm-mm-mm.
06:53A Neil Diamond experience.
06:55Lightning and Thunder!
06:57Reach it out.
07:00Sold out shows.
07:02What's a Pearl Jam?
07:03You don't know who Pearl Jam is?
07:04I guess we're opening for Pearl Jam.
07:10Here we go.
07:21It's good.
07:23So good.
07:24So good.
07:25So good.
07:26So good.
07:27Mike and Claire Sardina.
07:28So good.
07:29So good.
07:30Mike and Claire Sardina.
07:31So good.
07:32So good.
07:33Mike and Claire Sardina are this real-life couple.
07:36Mm-hmm.
07:37So talk to us about them.
07:38Milwaukee, mid-90s.
07:40Mike was AKA Lightning.
07:42His stage name was Lightning.
07:43His manager.
07:44And Claire was Thunder.
07:45That's right.
07:46Claire Stangle.
07:47His manager was his dentist,
07:48who put a lightning bolt on his front tooth.
07:51And they were Lightning and Thunder.
07:53And in the mid-90s,
07:54they had this Neil Diamond tribute band.
07:56And there they are.
07:57They played in pubs.
07:58They played in clubs.
07:59And then they just became the bomb.
08:00Huge.
08:01They were huge in Milwaukee.
08:02And they ended up opening up a Pearl Jam.
08:04And so that's sort of the showbiz side.
08:06But their story...
08:07Oh.
08:08Honestly, I want to be in every cinema.
08:09I'm talking too much.
08:10I don't know.
08:11I'll talk with you.
08:12No, no.
08:13I'm trying.
08:14I'm trying.
08:15Interrupting.
08:16But also, what I think about is,
08:17whatever you think this story,
08:18you know, it's a showbiz story to add,
08:19it goes to places you can't imagine.
08:20And I promise you,
08:21when you watch it,
08:22part of you is going to say,
08:23all right, Hollywood,
08:24take it down a notch.
08:25Come on.
08:26It's already a good story.
08:27You didn't have to lay it on.
08:28Everything is true.
08:29And Kate,
08:30you met Claire,
08:31the real Claire,
08:32in the end,
08:33but you didn't meet her initially.
08:34No, no.
08:35No, initially,
08:36I mean,
08:37we had a couple of years ago.
08:38And Kate,
08:39you met Claire,
08:40the real Claire,
08:41in the end,
08:42but you didn't meet her initially.
08:43No, no.
08:44Initially,
08:45I mean,
08:46we had such a great resource
08:47with the documentary,
08:48so I think Craig really wanted me to...
08:51This is the director.
08:52The director, Craig Brewer,
08:53writer-director,
08:54did an amazing job on this.
08:56And he kind of wanted me
08:59not to get too involved with Claire
09:02so that I wouldn't be torn away
09:04from my instincts of the story he wrote,
09:06you know.
09:07But once we started,
09:08she came on set,
09:09and it was amazing,
09:12and wild, actually,
09:13to have her there,
09:14and for us to have the same hair
09:16and stare at the older Claire,
09:19you know.
09:20And how difficult...
09:21Because you're doing such a specific thing,
09:23you know,
09:24you're playing a real person
09:26who's then impersonating...
09:27Right.
09:28...a real person.
09:29Right.
09:30Like, which end do you start from?
09:32Yeah, it was confusing.
09:33Yeah.
09:34But I obviously have to start with me,
09:35and because I have a life
09:36where I perform as well,
09:38I kind of had to lose me to become Mike
09:40and then Mike to become Neil,
09:42and it was awesome.
09:43And luckily,
09:44the first thing we did
09:45was get in the recording studio.
09:47So we did everything live,
09:48and we recorded everything.
09:49Nice.
09:50But that's really where we found our voices,
09:53I think, individually and together.
09:55And connection.
09:56Yeah.
09:57And it was like a nice sort of icebreaker
09:59because the story is such an intense love story.
10:02And I remember saying to Hugh,
10:04like, this movie won't work if we don't work,
10:06and we have to find that, like, really...
10:10They were so in love, Mike and Claire.
10:13And so starting with music for us
10:15was a great way to kind of break the ice.
10:17And the chemistry between the two of you is great.
10:19There's just a little clip,
10:20and it's a very sweet little clip
10:22that just shows that love and that chemistry.
10:25Hey, Claire.
10:29I can't thank Neil,
10:30because every thank you I got belongs to you, doll.
10:36You're my August night,
10:37you're my September morning,
10:38you're my heartlight,
10:39and you're my crackling, Rosie.
10:40You got me?
10:51I'll see you on stage.
10:58Oh.
10:59Oh, I can't wait.
11:02You know what's going on.
11:03I might cry again.
11:04I might cry again.
11:05I haven't seen the movie,
11:06I'm already crying.
11:07My parents were a mess.
11:10It was, like, really, like,
11:12I think everybody who's, you know,
11:14because even when you know someone so well,
11:16like, we were a mess when we saw the movie the first time,
11:18and that's really rare.
11:19But what's nice is they're kind of gorgeous tears.
11:22It's not a depressing,
11:23it's not a depressing,
11:24in no way is it depressing.
11:25No, it's uplifting.
11:26Who are you?
11:27You're welling up as well.
11:29Right.
11:30I'm seeing us kissing it.
11:31We had, there was a lot of kissing.
11:32So much kissing.
11:33But there was my favourite,
11:34my favourite moment.
11:36We were kissing one night,
11:37we had a kissing scene,
11:38ended in a kiss.
11:39I proposed.
11:41And, uh, it started to snow.
11:43And it was, like, midnight,
11:44and it was freezing.
11:45Wow, it was so beautiful.
11:46You know when it's really cold
11:47and your nose can't stop running?
11:49Yeah.
11:50It's not a good thing.
11:51The scene was, like, two minutes long,
11:52so my make-up artist would go,
11:53oh, Hugh, wow, okay.
11:55Clean me up.
11:56But by the time it came to the kiss,
11:57just, yeah.
11:58Oh, it was...
11:59And so, it's not...
12:00It ruined everything.
12:02It's really not good for your confidence
12:04when you see this look on your co-star's face.
12:09And that's on her close-up.
12:13Does your nose run when you cry?
12:15A little bit, yeah.
12:16Yes, yes.
12:17And in the cold, yeah.
12:18Yes, yeah.
12:19Oh, guys, it was...
12:20Listen, I'm a professional.
12:23Am I right?
12:24I read you in an interview
12:25and you were talking about your connection to Claire,
12:27that idea that you don't choose to perform...
12:30Like, these guys had to perform.
12:32You have to do it, yeah.
12:33There's...
12:34I think Hugh and I both relate to that very much so,
12:36where it's, like, it's just in you
12:38and when you're born with music in you,
12:40it has to come out.
12:41You don't know what else to do, you know?
12:44And if you're not doing that,
12:45there's something really missing in your life.
12:48And that is Claire and Mike.
12:50And it was them, their whole life,
12:52their whole, you know, relationship.
12:54I think they fell in love because they saw that
12:57in each other, too, you know?
12:58Yeah.
12:59Um...
13:00But you guys, you're...
13:01The people are born with music in them
13:03and they can't do it, like me.
13:06Oh!
13:07There's so many people, like...
13:08No, but you guys are both, like, so unique.
13:10We were talking backstage about how, like,
13:12you know, Hugh can go on Broadway for, like, a year
13:14and do Music Man.
13:15Like, there's so few people who can do both, you know?
13:18Who can act and sing and dance and do all that
13:20and, like, uniquely suited to this kind of movie.
13:23But, Ben, drumming was your first love.
13:25Drumming was my first love, but I...
13:27Oh, wow.
13:28Yes.
13:29Yeah, but no, it was...
13:30We've got a picture of you drumming.
13:31Yeah.
13:32How old are you here?
13:33This is... Look at...
13:34Oh!
13:35That's my bar mitzvah.
13:36Ben, that's your bar mitzvah?
13:37You're like Jack White.
13:38Yeah.
13:40But I did not have the music in me enough
13:42to make it come out and sound good.
13:44But you did...
13:45Because last time you were here,
13:46you told us about your band.
13:47Yes.
13:48Yeah, yeah.
13:49We're currently in a band?
13:50I have... No, in high school,
13:51I had a band called Capital Punishment.
13:55Very nice.
13:56Yes.
13:57And we recorded one album.
13:58And you did an album.
13:59Yeah.
14:00Was it... I think we got...
14:01Was it called Roadkill?
14:02It was called Roadkill.
14:03There it is.
14:04Ooh!
14:05But now, here's the weird thing.
14:06Which one of you?
14:07I'm the guy down...
14:08The Che Guevara guy at the bottom.
14:09They're at the bottom right.
14:10Super dark.
14:11Yeah, yeah.
14:12What was the vibe?
14:13The vibe was sort of like a post-punk kind of alt-rock,
14:18you know, Brian Eno, David Bowie inspired.
14:20Wow!
14:21What year was this?
14:22This was 19...
14:24It's already got a 19 in front of me.
14:2780...
14:28No, no, no, no.
14:29Yeah, 82?
14:30Wow.
14:31I have to hear this out.
14:32Well, now, here's the thing.
14:33Here's the thing, Kate.
14:34You can.
14:35Because this...
14:36No, we're not going to play it, but...
14:37Yeah.
14:40Now I feel bad.
14:41Now I feel bad.
14:42Like, we should be playing it.
14:43No, please.
14:44But, so, you were talking about this in interviews,
14:46or it came up.
14:47Yeah.
14:48And then what happened?
14:49Um, well, I was...
14:50I mean, somebody released our album.
14:52Are you talking about that?
14:53Yeah.
14:54Yeah, somebody released our album,
14:55like, years later they found it,
14:56and an independent label released...
14:57What?
14:58Yeah, and then we got together
14:59and started playing together again.
15:00Roadkill.
15:01And I just played with the guys, like,
15:03uh, yeah.
15:04Here you all are.
15:05Here's capital punishment.
15:06Here's capital punishment now.
15:07Awesome.
15:08Yeah, that's a few years ago.
15:09What?
15:10Yeah, we did a few gigs,
15:11and we just rehearsed the other day,
15:13actually, for a while.
15:14But the problem is,
15:15Peter, on the left, is a judge.
15:17He's, like, a chief...
15:19He's a judge in Arizona,
15:21and then Peter, on the other guy,
15:23the redhead Peter,
15:24he's a professor of Eastern European literature.
15:27He lives in Prague.
15:28Okay.
15:29And then Chris, my friend,
15:30who's screaming back,
15:31he lives in Brooklyn,
15:32and he's close by.
15:33Okay.
15:34So we're never, like,
15:35in the same place together, yeah.
15:36And then, in terms of music,
15:37Devine, Joy Roundup,
15:38you are a trained opera singer.
15:40Yeah.
15:43You are.
15:44I am.
15:45I know, I get nervous about that.
15:46I don't know why.
15:47But it's true.
15:48It is true, that's not a lie.
15:49Yeah.
15:50Yeah.
15:51You started in a choir,
15:52then opera?
15:53Yeah, and I...
15:54And then there was this, like,
15:56new girl that came to our school
15:57and was like,
15:58I went to Interlochen.
15:59And I was like,
16:00I went home and I was like,
16:01yo, mom,
16:02I'm going to Interlochen.
16:03I don't know what it is,
16:04but I don't like how she's talking.
16:06It's a little too cocky for me.
16:08And so, literally,
16:09I didn't know what Interlochen was,
16:10what it was about.
16:11Got to the camp.
16:12It was like this big
16:13international performing arts school
16:14that's, like, in the woods.
16:15Switzerland?
16:16No, no, no.
16:17It's in Traverse City,
16:18which is, like,
16:19two hours outside of Detroit,
16:20but it's an international
16:21performing arts school.
16:22I get there,
16:23and they were like,
16:24so you're in the opera program?
16:25And I was like,
16:26what?
16:27But I absolutely fell in love with it,
16:30and I was hooked.
16:31And I was saying to you backstage,
16:33when are we going to hear you sing in a movie?
16:35I know,
16:36and I'm so jealous now,
16:37because hearing about theirs,
16:38and I got a chance to work with Craig Brewer
16:40on Dolomite,
16:41so I know how he's so good with music.
16:43I need to make it happen.
16:44It's going to happen.
16:45I do.
16:46I need to make it happen.
16:47Yeah, keep talking about it,
16:48and it'll happen.
16:49Like him.
16:50He brought up an interview
16:51and the whole band got back together.
16:52He could get Craig Brewer to direct...
16:53He could direct the Capital Punishment movie.
16:55Yes!
16:56I can play it myself.
16:59Talking of music,
17:00Song Song Blue,
17:01obviously it's not about Neil Taiman,
17:02but his music is like a character.
17:05I mean, it's so...
17:06There's 13 of his songs in it.
17:07Wow.
17:08And Neil knew the story of Mike and Claire really well,
17:11and so he just gave his rights to his music for the movie.
17:15And you both spent time with him, right?
17:17Yeah.
17:18You did first.
17:19I grew up in Colorado,
17:21and he lives like 10 minutes from where I grew up,
17:25and had never met him.
17:28And he'd seen the movie,
17:29and I was like,
17:30can I go see him?
17:32And they invited me over,
17:33and we had Lemonade on the Porch.
17:35There you are!
17:36There you are making Lemonade on the Porch.
17:37It was so emotional,
17:38because he's retired,
17:40he's not singing anymore,
17:41he's really like, you know,
17:43living a very quiet life.
17:44Yeah.
17:45And he loves his movie so much,
17:47and he was so grateful,
17:48which I was not expecting,
17:50and emotional about the movie.
17:52And then we just had this lovely porch moment.
17:56Yeah.
17:57What's that song?
17:58I am myself.
17:59So good.
18:00Oh, it's in there.
18:01There's no one there,
18:02and no one at night,
18:05even the chair.
18:07Oh, very good.
18:08I'm going to do a duet there.
18:09Yeah.
18:14So, Kate went round and had Lemonade on the Porch.
18:16Yeah.
18:17You, Jackman,
18:18you sort of imposed yourself on the Diamond family.
18:20Yeah.
18:21Well, he rang me.
18:22Oh, did he?
18:23And he rang me after seeing the movie with his wife, Katie,
18:26and he was crying.
18:27Wow.
18:28And he was so moved by it,
18:29he loved it,
18:30and he just loved the story of Mike and Claire,
18:33and so I took the opportunity, I said,
18:35ah, guys, I'd love to come round and have a cuppa,
18:38or something.
18:39And they were like...
18:40And Neil's like,
18:41OK, yeah, all right.
18:44And then I didn't hear from Neil anymore,
18:46and Katie obviously takes her phone and goes,
18:48you know we're in Colorado.
18:49I went, OK, yeah, no,
18:51I'd still like to come for a cuppa.
18:52And she was like,
18:53you, so I guess you want to stay the night?
18:55And I'm like,
18:56that'd be great.
18:58And she's like,
18:59OK, so we went there,
19:01and their son Jesse was there,
19:02and Neil came out,
19:03and he came up to me,
19:04and he grabbed me,
19:05and he goes,
19:06you did good, kid.
19:07Oh.
19:08And he was emotional about it,
19:09and so I stayed the night,
19:11and at dinner time,
19:13Neil Diamond,
19:14Neil Diamond goes,
19:15you want to do some karaoke?
19:17I'm like,
19:19hell yeah.
19:20We did karaoke.
19:21Oh.
19:22And he's,
19:23yes.
19:24Oh.
19:25And the first song,
19:26Neil sang,
19:27yeah, at one point,
19:28he put his arm around,
19:29he kissed me on the forehead,
19:30and he sang,
19:31I dreamed a dream.
19:32No.
19:33And I said,
19:34why are you singing,
19:35I dreamed a dream?
19:36And he goes,
19:37that's such a pretty tune.
19:38And he sang it so beautifully.
19:39A pretty tune.
19:40And then we sang,
19:41can't help falling in love with you,
19:42and then we sang,
19:43Sweet Caroline.
19:44He did.
19:45Yeah.
19:46And a funny fact,
19:47about the Diamond household.
19:48It's the best.
19:49This is a true story.
19:50Anyone who says,
19:51so good,
19:52in the Diamond household,
19:53two other people have to say,
19:54so good, so good.
19:55So good, so good.
19:56Took me a second to work it out.
19:57It happened to me too.
19:58Like, I'm sitting,
19:59I go, oh God,
20:00I was so good,
20:01and you hear someone go,
20:02so good, so good,
20:03and you're like,
20:04and then finally I was like,
20:05do you guys say that?
20:06Oh yeah,
20:07every time someone says,
20:08so good.
20:09Yeah.
20:10Play that game at home,
20:11you're going to realise how often you say it.
20:13It's real quick.
20:16It's just a gorgeous film.
20:18A reminder that Hugh and Kate
20:20will be making beautiful music together,
20:22in Songs on Blue,
20:23from New Year's Day,
20:24and take it from me,
20:25it's so good.
20:26So good.
20:27So good.
20:28Very good.
20:29Good.
20:30Very good.
20:31So, everyone can go to the Diamond household.
20:33Yeah.
20:34You're all in.
20:35But,
20:36right now,
20:37you can see Ben Stiller,
20:38in a very personal documentary film,
20:40Stiller and Mira,
20:41and nothing is lost.
20:42It's out now,
20:43on Apple TV Plus.
20:45So Ben,
20:46this is a tribute to your parents,
20:48and Mira,
20:49and Jerry Stiller,
20:50and very famous in America,
20:51I think probably less,
20:52well,
20:53certainly the double act,
20:54less well-known here.
20:55Yes, yeah.
20:56I think my dad became most well-known
20:58for doing Seinfeld,
20:59and being on Seinfeld and King of Queens,
21:00but,
21:01yeah,
21:02they had a whole career before that.
21:03My parents were a comedy team,
21:04they were on the Ed Sullivan Show,
21:06about 36 times in the 60s.
21:08Whoa.
21:09Yeah.
21:10And, you know,
21:11their whole act was sort of based on their relationship,
21:13and we grew up around that,
21:15and them, you know,
21:16kind of creating together.
21:18And so the documentary is about,
21:20yeah,
21:21about growing up in a show business family,
21:23and kind of,
21:24and then it sort of became about our whole family.
21:27Because originally,
21:28I wanted to make something,
21:29when my dad passed away,
21:30just about my parents,
21:31and their career and their relationship,
21:33but I didn't really know what it would be.
21:35And that was in 2020,
21:36I started working on it.
21:37And,
21:38COVID was happening,
21:40and,
21:41you know,
21:42it was a,
21:43just kind of a time where,
21:44you know,
21:45we couldn't do a memorial for my dad,
21:47or anything like that.
21:48And I had all this footage that my dad had saved,
21:51because he'd saved Super 8 footage,
21:53and home movies,
21:54and video cassettes,
21:55and scripts,
21:56and we were going through the apartment.
21:57So the movies,
21:58my sister and I,
21:59going through the apartment.
22:00That bit is so,
22:01so relatable.
22:02Anyone who's lost a parent.
22:03Yeah.
22:04When you and Amy are going to the apartment,
22:05to clear it out.
22:06And when you say clear it out,
22:07there's stuff.
22:08I mean,
22:09Yeah.
22:10He kept everything.
22:11He saved everything.
22:12Yeah.
22:13He saved like an old scuba mask,
22:14from when I was like eight years old,
22:15or like our YMCA,
22:17you know,
22:18form to like,
22:19you know,
22:20to apply for the family day,
22:21things like that.
22:22And so,
22:23but you know how it just gets very,
22:24you know,
22:25you get deep into that stuff,
22:26when you start going into it,
22:27and you kind of go into another time.
22:28It takes forever to get rid of it.
22:29Yeah.
22:30And so,
22:31making the movie was a strange process,
22:32because I'd be delving into all this stuff,
22:34and then I was trying to figure out,
22:35what is the movie really about?
22:36We've got a clip.
22:37This is your parents at work,
22:39and then it kind of cuts to you,
22:42and your sister Amy,
22:43talking about...
22:44Yeah.
22:45We're going through the apartment,
22:46going through all this stuff.
22:47Some of the blurred lines.
22:48Yes.
22:49We have a sketch which we call hate.
22:50The heat of your heart hate.
22:51You know,
22:52I say to Anne,
22:53I hate you.
22:54She says,
22:55you hate me,
22:56I hate you.
22:57And one day,
22:58Amy, who was six,
22:59came into the room,
23:00and she heard us saying this to each other,
23:01and we looked at her for a moment,
23:02and we didn't know what to say,
23:03so we said,
23:04Amy,
23:05mommy, daddy, rehearse.
23:06Right.
23:07Mommy, daddy, rehearse.
23:08And Amy looked at us,
23:09and she started to smile.
23:10Well, about two weeks later,
23:11we were fighting.
23:12And...
23:13Amy walked in,
23:14and she said...
23:15Mommy, daddy, rehearse?
23:16No.
23:17Mommy, daddy, fight.
23:18Get out of here.
23:19It gets to be a little complicated sometimes.
23:20I hated you before I met you.
23:21I hated you before you were born.
23:23To me, that's like one of the things that I think about,
23:25is just how that became sort of like,
23:28yeah, that's the laugh,
23:29that's the funny joke.
23:30But what is the reality of that story, though?
23:33we don't know, Ben,
23:35that's why we're so messed up.
23:37That's why we're doing this documentary?
23:39That's why we're going to figure it out.
23:40Wow.
23:46And in the documentary,
23:47I mean,
23:48it does become kind of meta where,
23:50you know,
23:51what are some of the pitfalls of parenting
23:54that you see yourself fall into while you're making this?
23:58I think it's that thing when you're,
23:59you know,
24:00when you're younger,
24:01I, you know,
24:02having kids who want to,
24:04who are actors,
24:05and my son's in college,
24:06my daughter's a working actor.
24:08You know,
24:09I see myself in them
24:11in terms of how I was with my parents,
24:13because when I was young,
24:14I didn't want my parents' help.
24:15I didn't,
24:16I kind of, you know,
24:17wanted to do my own thing.
24:18I wasn't even,
24:19I didn't even care what they were doing.
24:20And,
24:21but also I was,
24:22I had like issues with them,
24:23you know,
24:24because they were working all the time
24:25and they were busy and,
24:26you know,
24:27the stuff that comes up as you get older,
24:28too,
24:29and you look back and,
24:30but then when you have kids,
24:31it just makes you look at your parents
24:32in such a different way.
24:33And of course I,
24:34so I decided to interview my kids for the,
24:36for the movie.
24:37And of course they have all the same issues
24:39that I had.
24:40But probably even worse.
24:42And I realized,
24:43you know,
24:44that that's the thing,
24:45like you try to not make those mistakes,
24:46but then you can't help it.
24:47It's just, you know,
24:48it's part of just,
24:49you know,
24:50being a parent.
24:51This is all hitting very close to home.
24:52Yeah.
24:53I was going to say,
24:54because when you grew up with very famous,
24:55you know,
24:56Goldie Hall and Kurt Russell,
24:57do they kind of try to protect you
24:58from the show business bit
24:59or were you kind of in it?
25:00You know,
25:01it's funny when you're in it,
25:02you don't see it like show biz.
25:03You see it like,
25:04a really creative,
25:06artistic story.
25:07And also it's your life.
25:08You don't know any difference.
25:09Yeah.
25:10And also like,
25:11they're not like,
25:12you know,
25:13I mean,
25:14it was just their job.
25:15And,
25:16you know,
25:17to hear this,
25:18because it is,
25:19it's,
25:20it's like,
25:21you know,
25:22my son,
25:23same as Ella,
25:24they're both actors.
25:25And,
25:26it is a DNA thing.
25:27There's something in it.
25:28There's something in the artist kind of,
25:31you know,
25:32DNA,
25:33that is an interesting thing to uncover.
25:35Like,
25:36what is it?
25:37Is it nurture?
25:38Or is it nature?
25:39And Devon,
25:40it's interesting.
25:41And so,
25:42you know,
25:43it's a really good experience.
25:44No.
25:45But your parents,
25:46they went to such lengths to make sure you succeeded.
25:47No one,
25:48that we have traced in our,
25:49genealogical past,
25:50has artistic gifts.
25:52I genuinely do not,
25:54know where this came from.
25:56No.
25:58But,
25:59it was cool because my parents were just kind of like,
26:01my parents taught me at a young age like,
26:03these are your gifts.
26:04That was something that I knew that was very different from other kids.
26:07That like,
26:08it would almost be like a whisper.
26:09Like,
26:10you know what I mean?
26:11Like, let's say,
26:12I don't know,
26:13we're out and about shopping or whatever.
26:14And maybe I would just like,
26:15goof off and be humming.
26:17And my mom would be like,
26:18that's,
26:19that's real.
26:20That's a real gift.
26:22That you have.
26:23And I was like,
26:24oh,
26:25okay.
26:26So I was made aware of at a young age.
26:27And so,
26:28when I switched gears and got into acting,
26:30and when I had got into Yale,
26:32my father was very happy.
26:34Yeah.
26:35Because of the Ivy League portion of the equation.
26:38And got all the lanyards and all the things.
26:40And I was like,
26:41you know it's for acting though,
26:42right?
26:43He goes, no, no, no, no, no, no.
26:45You went to Yale.
26:46And I never forget,
26:47at my graduation,
26:49Scorsese spoke,
26:50was like the keynote speaker.
26:52And my dad was like,
26:53talk to him,
26:54you need to get a job.
26:55And I was like,
26:56please,
26:57stop that.
26:58But yeah,
26:59it's,
27:00but they've been so supportive.
27:01And I,
27:02I can't even imagine,
27:03what that would be like.
27:04And as I was like,
27:05growing into my artistry,
27:07I kind of always wanted that.
27:08Although I was so grateful,
27:09what my parents did.
27:10But because I was kind of like,
27:11on my own.
27:12And,
27:13and figuring,
27:14this out.
27:15Um,
27:16but I just think that is so,
27:18it's amazing.
27:19They supported you like that.
27:20Yeah.
27:21Well,
27:22talking of supportive fathers,
27:23Hugh Jackman,
27:24your dad,
27:25did something so sweet.
27:26Do you know what I'm talking about?
27:27I do know what he did.
27:28My dad was always supportive.
27:29We went,
27:30growing up,
27:31always to the theatre,
27:32every show.
27:33My standing,
27:34my gift every year for my birthday,
27:36was a subscription to the Sydney Theatre Company,
27:38so that I could go,
27:39he bought the cheapest one possible.
27:41So I had to go,
27:42Wednesday matinee,
27:43and skip class,
27:44just so I could do it.
27:45But,
27:46dad made sure I saw everything.
27:47And I remember once,
27:48in my career,
27:49dad saw everything I did,
27:50was always just so effusive,
27:52when he came back.
27:53Even the stuff that he had no interest in.
27:55And I could tell,
27:56he didn't like it.
27:57But he'd be like,
27:58wonderful work, Hugh.
27:59Wonderful.
28:00And one time,
28:01I was offered to do Carousel,
28:02um,
28:03at Carnegie Hall.
28:04And I just,
28:05I told dad,
28:06I'm doing this thing.
28:07He goes, I'm coming.
28:08I, I'm,
28:09because for,
28:10for my dad,
28:11Carousel,
28:12that's his jam.
28:13Yeah.
28:14So my dad never missed a day of work in his life.
28:15He worked at Pricewaterhouse,
28:16his entire working life.
28:17And,
28:18he took three days off,
28:19to come to New York,
28:20to see me,
28:21in Carousel.
28:22Now when I say three days,
28:23that's 24 hour flight,
28:24from Sydney,
28:25to New York.
28:26He was in New York,
28:27for less than 24 hours,
28:28and then a 24 hour flight back,
28:30straight to the office.
28:31Wow.
28:32And so he was on his way over,
28:33and,
28:34my dad,
28:35itineraries,
28:36accountant.
28:37Classic accountant.
28:38What's the dress code?
28:39What time is it?
28:40And I said,
28:41it's black tie dad,
28:42it's Carnegie Hall.
28:43Well on the day of,
28:44I found out it wasn't black tie.
28:45It was,
28:46business casual,
28:47and I pictured my dad,
28:49just arriving with like,
28:50whatever he's wearing on the plane,
28:51with the black tie.
28:53So I rang him,
28:54he was,
28:55he was,
28:56he just got to the hotel,
28:57I'm rehearsing,
28:58we're on in like,
28:59eight hours.
29:00I said, Dan I'm so sorry,
29:01it's not,
29:02he goes, don't worry,
29:03I'll get it sorted,
29:04everything's okay.
29:05And I said, fine.
29:06He said,
29:07but do me a favour Hugh,
29:08I would love to come and pick you up,
29:09at your hotel room,
29:10and walk you to the stage door,
29:11before the performance.
29:12Stop.
29:13And I said,
29:14sure,
29:15meet me at six,
29:17the show's at eight,
29:18I'm going to walk over,
29:19get there about 6.15.
29:20And so,
29:21six o'clock on the dot,
29:22there's a knock on the door,
29:23open it up,
29:24and there's my father,
29:25standing in full black tie.
29:27I'm like,
29:28no, no, no, no,
29:29Dad,
29:30I'm so serious,
29:31only the choir are wearing black tie.
29:33No one else.
29:34And he looked me straight in the eye,
29:35and he said,
29:36Hugh,
29:37my son is singing at Carnegie Hall,
29:39it is black tie for me.
29:41Oh.
29:42That's beautiful.
29:43Not a dry eye,
29:44not a dry eye.
29:45Someone's got to cry tonight,
29:46someone's got to cry.
29:47Here's the thing,
29:48I couldn't believe in the documentary bit.
29:49So,
29:50your parents are performers,
29:51but they were not shy about,
29:53kind of,
29:54bringing you and your sister in front of the cameras.
29:56Right, well,
29:57yeah,
29:58when we were little,
29:59I mean,
30:00they would go on the Mike Douglas show,
30:01which was like a,
30:02a daily show,
30:03and they would bring us out,
30:04you know,
30:05for like a funny little bit,
30:06or something like that.
30:07We thought it was so much fun,
30:08because we got to be on TV.
30:09But,
30:10it wasn't,
30:11some of the times,
30:12you just came on as cute,
30:13small people,
30:14look at our adorable children.
30:15But then,
30:16there's a bit,
30:17where they make you,
30:18not why they made you,
30:19but you perform.
30:20Well,
30:21they were co-hosting the show,
30:22so they do five shows,
30:23and they do five shows,
30:24and they do five shows,
30:25and they do five shows,
30:26and they do five shows,
30:27and they do five shows,
30:28and they do five shows,
30:29and they do five shows,
30:30and they do five shows,
30:31and they'd be sitting,
30:32on the couch with him,
30:33and so I think one day,
30:34they were like,
30:35trying to think of things to do,
30:36that would be fun,
30:37and they go,
30:38oh, well our kids take violin lessons,
30:39um,
30:40why don't we have them,
30:41come out and play?
30:42Listen, we have the clip.
30:43No.
30:44What is happening?
30:46This is the clip,
30:47this is the clip,
30:48this is the clip from the documentary.
30:49This is the clip from the documentary.
30:50Yeah, check out,
30:51check out the level of talent.
30:52So here we go,
30:53so this,
30:54this is Ben and his sister Amy,
30:55on the show.
30:56Oh my gosh.
30:57And now,
30:58like,
30:59oh my god.
31:00Well, let's listen to you,
31:01a little bit.
31:02Look at your belt.
31:03Here we go.
31:04Now,
31:05were you normally better than this?
31:07No.
31:08No.
31:09This is the,
31:10as good as it got.
31:11Your mother,
31:12your mother's kind of embarrassed,
31:13I think.
31:14Yes.
31:15Oh!
31:18Your dad,
31:19your dad is just laughing at you.
31:21No,
31:22he thinks we're doing great.
31:24Oh,
31:25okay.
31:26He thinks,
31:27he truly thought we were amazing.
31:28I love that.
31:29Oh.
31:30And...
31:32That is...
31:33No, I think,
31:34my mother there is realising,
31:35oh,
31:36there's going to be years of therapy.
31:39Beautiful.
31:40You can see Ben's tribute to his parents,
31:41Stiller and Mirror,
31:42Nothing is Lost,
31:43on Apple TV,
31:44right now.
31:45Yeah.
31:48Meanwhile,
31:49Divine Joy Randolph
31:51brings us Eternity.
31:52It's in cinemas
31:53from the 5th of December.
31:55And so,
31:56this is,
31:57there aren't many of them,
31:58but there are a couple.
31:59It's an afterlife rom-com.
32:01Mm-hmm.
32:02Okay.
32:03And so,
32:04who do you play?
32:05What's going on?
32:06Tell us what you can.
32:07So,
32:08I play a AC,
32:09which is an afterlife coordinator.
32:10So,
32:11it's like a social worker of purgatory,
32:13basically.
32:14And the whole concept is like,
32:17when people leave Earth,
32:19they come to this place,
32:20it's called the Junction,
32:22and we basically,
32:24my role is that,
32:26as an AC,
32:27is that,
32:28I help you decide where,
32:30you would like to spend eternity,
32:32and there's all these different worlds of options.
32:34Like,
32:35beach world,
32:36and like,
32:37Germany in the 30s,
32:39before the Nazis.
32:41Like, no Nazis.
32:42You know what I mean?
32:43And so,
32:44that's a real thing.
32:45I go for beach world.
32:46Yeah.
32:47Yeah.
32:48And so,
32:51in our movie,
32:53basically,
32:54Elizabeth Olsen,
32:56and Miles Teller,
32:57play an old couple.
32:59He dies by choking on a pretzel.
33:01Mm-hmm.
33:02That's a sad, sad, sad way to go.
33:04Uh,
33:05and,
33:06he dies first,
33:07then she dies,
33:09and he's waiting for her.
33:11Uh,
33:12and then when she dies,
33:13she's asked the same question,
33:15and then,
33:16Callum Turner,
33:17appears,
33:18and is like,
33:19I am your long lost first love,
33:22who was,
33:23went to war,
33:24died in the war,
33:25and he's waited 67 years for her.
33:27Ooh.
33:28And so,
33:29he comes and is like,
33:30babe, it's me.
33:31And so,
33:32she has a real dilemma.
33:34So, her choice,
33:35well, her thing then is,
33:36whom she is going to spend eternity with.
33:39And then shenanigans ensue.
33:40Both.
33:41As hot.
33:42Duh.
33:43Both hot.
33:44Big both.
33:45Big both.
33:46But yeah,
33:47it's really cute,
33:48and it's all this back and forth,
33:49and she's trying to figure it out.
33:51And so,
33:52my character helps Miles' character try to win the girl.
33:56Well, that's what we've got.
33:57We've got a clip of,
33:58uh,
33:59you as Anna,
34:00with Miles Teller character, Larry,
34:01discussing his options.
34:02Mm-hmm.
34:03He looks like Montgomery Cliff.
34:04Woo!
34:05Oh my gosh,
34:06I was saying this just the other day.
34:08Montgomery Cliff.
34:09He is so handsome.
34:11Luke is so handsome.
34:12You're not helping.
34:13I'm sorry,
34:14but,
34:15it is what it is.
34:16Luke is hot.
34:17His eyes are bluer than the ocean.
34:19He has a better narrative.
34:20No, he doesn't.
34:21I have a better narrative.
34:23I was married to her for 65 years,
34:24and I gave her children.
34:26Exactly.
34:27We go with that.
34:28That's strong.
34:29There's nothing more powerful than emotional blackmail.
34:30Right?
34:31Good on you.
34:38I don't know if you know this.
34:39I-I heard Elizabeth Olsen talking about this movie,
34:42and weirdly,
34:43she said she-
34:44Do you know this?
34:45I heard this too.
34:46I don't know Elizabeth Olsen,
34:47but I heard her on a talk show talking about the movie,
34:49saying that she modeled her character,
34:51this older lady,
34:52on my mother.
34:53I believe it.
34:54Yeah.
34:55As far as she watched tapes.
34:56That's amazing.
34:57She watched tapes of your parents working together.
34:58That blew my mind.
34:59That was, yeah, the other night.
35:00I just heard her saying that.
35:01I believe it.
35:02Yeah.
35:03I love your father's physical comedy so much,
35:05and so when I get a chance to be physical,
35:07just the way that he was so free in his body,
35:10Yeah.
35:11It's something like,
35:12normally directors have to be like,
35:13Tony down, Tony down,
35:14because I would literally throw myself across the room
35:16if I could do it.
35:17I just loved how much he just was so in his body
35:21and all his faculties.
35:22Yeah, yeah, yeah.
35:23Mm-hmm.
35:24A lot of film actors, you know,
35:25physicality in movies is not really-
35:28I know.
35:29Talked about that much, you know,
35:30because it's all like close up, you know,
35:31but that's such-
35:32No, I love it.
35:33There's a tone to the comedy in it,
35:34that kind of tug of love-
35:35Yup.
35:36That does kind of-
35:37Yeah.
35:38It feeds into that thing.
35:39I love it.
35:40I can't wait to see it.
35:41It's called Eternity,
35:42and it's out on the 5th of December,
35:44but we should say people can still enjoy you
35:47on the small screen.
35:48Murders, only murders in the building.
35:50Oh, yes.
35:51Only murders in the building.
35:52We've-
35:54Look at those two nut jobs.
35:56Aww.
35:57We've just finished season five here.
36:00Now, season six is happening.
36:01It is.
36:02Now, I hear a rumor.
36:03It's not a rumor anymore,
36:04but it might be for you guys.
36:05Go ahead, say it.
36:06It's gonna be filmed here.
36:07It is gonna be filmed here.
36:08Oh, wow.
36:09How is that happening?
36:11When I tell you, I literally don't know.
36:12Okay.
36:13I don't know how we met-
36:14But the only thing I think of is like,
36:15we were in New York,
36:16then we had a season in L.A.
36:18Now we're going to London!
36:20So I genuinely-
36:22I'm not even like,
36:23I'm not gonna tell you.
36:24I don't know.
36:25Okay.
36:26How we are going to London,
36:27but I'm very excited.
36:28But the New York cop is coming to London.
36:30I sure hope so.
36:32Like, you know,
36:33you pitched your thing in the interview.
36:34Where's the camera?
36:35John Hoffman.
36:36I would love to be in this next season
36:38of Only Murders in the Building.
36:40London.
36:41And,
36:43cause wouldn't it be so cool,
36:45and she like,
36:46had scenes with like,
36:48the guards, right?
36:49Oh, yes.
36:50And she trying to like,
36:51make them break and stuff.
36:52Yes.
36:53Like, right?
36:54I can see it.
36:55Or like, she wants to go in training
36:56to be one of those,
36:57cause you know she's so tough.
36:58Yeah.
36:59Now you join the Met,
37:00it'll be good, yeah.
37:01Ooh!
37:02I love it.
37:03And then it's been a while,
37:04the Fockers are back.
37:05Yes, they're coming back.
37:06Yes.
37:09It's called Focker-in-law?
37:10Focker-in-law.
37:14Rolls off the tongue.
37:15Don't love it.
37:16And is everyone back?
37:17Um, Owen Wilson's back,
37:18Robert De Niro's back,
37:19and, uh,
37:20Terry Polo's back,
37:22and Blythe Thanner's back,
37:24and the,
37:25the prospective Focker-in-law
37:27is Ariana Grande.
37:29Oh, wow!
37:31And when will Focker-in-law
37:33be in the world?
37:34We have this holiday in the States
37:36called Thanksgiving,
37:37you know, right?
37:38We've heard of it.
37:39So it's from now,
37:40so a year from now
37:41it's gonna be out.
37:42Oh!
37:43We just finished shooting,
37:44we literally just finished shooting it.
37:45Oh, okay!
37:46Yeah.
37:47So next Thanksgiving.
37:48Yes, but we had a great time,
37:49she's incredible,
37:50Ariana's like,
37:51what an amazing girl.
37:52You'd worked with her before though,
37:53hadn't you?
37:54Uh, she was in Zoolander 2,
37:56we had an orgy scene.
37:57Oh!
37:59And there was a hippo,
38:00and,
38:01and Ariana,
38:03and myself,
38:04and Owen,
38:05and a few other random people.
38:06And that,
38:07that was when we worked together,
38:08back in the day, yeah.
38:09Beautiful.
38:10And, uh, Hugh,
38:11last year,
38:12such an enormous success
38:13with your movie,
38:14Deadpool and Wolverine.
38:15I think it was the second biggest movie of the year.
38:17No, for sure.
38:18Yeah.
38:19Yeah.
38:20Yeah.
38:21Come on, we can do that again.
38:23But like,
38:24so every time you're on,
38:25you gotta go,
38:26well, I won't be doing that again.
38:27But then,
38:28then you keep making another one,
38:29it's a big, big hit.
38:30Yeah.
38:31So, are you gonna have to do it again?
38:32Maybe.
38:33Ooh!
38:34Maybe.
38:35I'm not saying,
38:36I am never saying never,
38:38ever again.
38:39Yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:40Because I didn't mean it,
38:41when I said never,
38:42until the day when I changed my mind.
38:44But I really did,
38:45for quite a few years,
38:46I meant it.
38:47Do you think you've got to the point now,
38:48where they could like,
38:49AI the body or something?
38:50A hundred percent.
38:51Yeah.
38:52I know.
38:53Yeah.
38:54So, I think they've got enough in there.
38:55Oh, yes.
38:56Good point.
38:57In fact,
38:58I've done your show five or six times,
38:59I could be out there in the dressing room.
39:00I don't know why you're here.
39:01This show is funnier.
39:02I'm gonna take the fruit bowl.
39:03I'm out.
39:04Yeah.
39:06Right,
39:07it is time for music.
39:08This Grammy-nominated artist shot to fame
39:11with his first single,
39:12Caroline,
39:13in 2023.
39:14Here performing 12 to 12 from his current album,
39:16I Barely Know Her,
39:17it is
39:18Somber!
39:22It's the UK television debut.
39:33I don't want anyone else
39:37From the hours of 12 to 12
39:42I am not the least compared
39:45By anyone but yourself
39:49Look at me and make me melt
39:53I know you wanna see me help my life
39:57I'm dealing with the cause I've dealt with yet
40:01While you're dancing with somebody else
40:04Was it always in your plan to leave eventually?
40:08Because to me there's no one else that could make sense for me
40:12The lasting night of hopes and deals
40:21In the room for people, I looking for you
40:25Would you avoid me or would you lose for me too?
40:30Time is all stuttering through you
40:33Too hard to be too hard
40:36I've never felt anything
40:54Like the love from our final days
40:58Why'd you wait?
41:00To show me you can do it this way
41:03I'd never look at you, look at you the same
41:07We're back in the London Café, I said
41:11Can I stay with you?
41:12Almost has to stay by mistake
41:15If I don't even have any great
41:18I'd never look at you, look in the first place
41:22Was it always in your can't-believe eventually?
41:26Because to me there's no one else that could make sense
41:29I'd never look at you, look at you, look at you, look at me
41:35I said one, two, three, let's go
41:37In a room full of people I'd look for you
41:42Would you avoid me or would you look for me too?
41:46Tell me it's my story for you too
41:50Oh, too hard to tell me it's you
41:53Baby, I'm delusional
41:57And the way you act is usual
42:00Baby, in another world
42:05I don't feel so I'd look for you
42:23In a room full of people I'd look for you
42:28Would you avoid me or would you look for me too?
42:32Tell me is our story blue
42:35Oh, do I want to meet you?
42:40In the room, there are people I love for you
42:44Would you avoid me or would you see me through?
42:49Tell me is our story blue
42:51Oh, do I want to meet you?
42:57Oh!
43:02Yeah!
43:06Somber, everybody!
43:08And his band, come on over, sir, do!
43:12Thank you so much for that voice, it was terrific, really great!
43:16Come on up!
43:17That's mine!
43:18And thank you!
43:20That is Somber, everybody!
43:24You guys are amazing!
43:26That was so fun, man!
43:28Thank you!
43:29I have to say, you know, we've been doing this show for a while,
43:31musical performances, I've never seen that mic stand before!
43:34Well, it's because it's the first of its kind!
43:36Oh!
43:37So fun!
43:38What do you call it?
43:39Does it have a name?
43:40Giant ball sack!
43:41Ah!
43:42Perfect!
43:43How many times does that giant ball sack hit you?
43:46I was going to say that!
43:48No problem!
43:49The stem of the giant ball sack is what hits you in the face!
43:58You brought it up!
43:59So thank you very much for that performance!
44:01That is off your current album, I Barely Know Her!
44:05There it is, ladies and gentlemen!
44:06Thank you!
44:07And, er...
44:08I'm so happy for you, because straight out of the gate, a Grammy nomination!
44:12Amazing!
44:13Thank you!
44:14Yeah!
44:15Thank you so much!
44:16Wow!
44:17And what I think is really nice about the Grammys is they announce the nominations and then
44:22the Grammys aren't for ages!
44:23Yeah!
44:24Like, you get to be a nominee for so long!
44:25It's lovely!
44:26I'm just enjoying it while it lasts and time's ticking!
44:28No, no, no!
44:29And, you know, you're young, but you have been doing music since you were very young!
44:33Yeah!
44:34And am I right?
44:35You were about 17 and you were like, actually, I'm not going to bother, I'm going to pack this
44:40in!
44:41Well, yeah, I was in high school and I was just, um, kind of figuring out what I wanted
44:48to do with my life.
44:49I hated school, it was not for me!
44:52And so I kind of, I made this one song and it was like, my last hope kind of thing, which
44:59is kind of funny because I was literally like 16 years old.
45:02So it definitely wasn't!
45:04But I felt that way because I was just a little dumbass, but whatever.
45:08Um, I posted it on the internet one day, um, I wrote it and produced it in my room and
45:13then I went to bed expecting to get bullied at school the next day, but I woke up and it
45:17was viral overnight and then I had every record label in my inbox and I didn't know what to do,
45:22um, so I, I got signed and I was able to drop out of school and my mom was really upset about that.
45:28But now I'm on Graham Norton, so.
45:30Yeah!
45:35Who are your musical heroes?
45:37My musical heroes, um, ah, man, Radiohead is my favorite band.
45:44I love Jeff Buckley, you're putting me on the spot.
45:48I love The Strokes, Velvet Underground.
45:50Capital Punishment.
45:51Who?
45:52Capital Punishment.
45:53Capital Punishment.
45:54I love, um, Capital Punishment.
45:56There you go!
45:57The stage presence, where in the world did that come from?
46:04Cause you're young, but when he was moving, I was like, who is this old soul?
46:09That's why you probably asked about who his muses are because the way he's moving and taking
46:14over this space, I was like, where do you get that from?
46:17I learned it all on stage, I used to be really stiff, but when I walked out to, like, my first
46:22bigger headline show of, like, fans that were all there for me, I kind of, something just
46:27unlocked in me, and I don't know, like, I just tried stuff on stage.
46:32It's very cool.
46:33I don't think it's that good, but thank you.
46:34It's good.
46:35Good.
46:36Good.
46:37Well, thank you very much for that great performance, we all really enjoyed it,
46:40and, uh, good luck with the album and at the Grammys.
46:43Sombra, everybody!
46:46Uh, right.
46:47That is nearly it.
46:49No, no, you stay, you stay there, Sombra.
46:51You're going nowhere.
46:52You've arrived now.
46:53OK.
46:54You're going nowhere.
46:55Uh, it's just time for a quick visit to the big red chair.
46:59Who's there?
47:00Hello.
47:01Hi.
47:02Hi.
47:03What's your name?
47:04Luke.
47:05Luke, lovely.
47:06And where are you from, Luke?
47:07At Belfast.
47:08Gorgeous.
47:09OK, you've really lost the accent.
47:11And, uh...
47:12LAUGHTER
47:13I just shot a film in Belfast.
47:15Have you?
47:16Yeah, I just shot a film there in February.
47:18Anyway.
47:19He wasn't there.
47:20He's been here for a year.
47:21Belfast is dead to him now.
47:23What do you do here, Luke?
47:24Erm, I'm a management consultant.
47:26OK.
47:27Well, he's landed on his feet.
47:29Off you go with the story, Luke.
47:30OK, so, three or four years ago, I had a rather embarrassing operation
47:34on my bum, my backside, so...
47:37We got bum, yep.
47:38Yeah, so, anyway, I was in hospital and was getting surgery
47:43and it hadn't been really done on someone my age,
47:47so my surgeon was rather, erm, apprehensive.
47:50But anyway, after she did it to me, she was...
47:52She basically said that we needed to take before photos
47:54and after photos for the British Medical Journal.
47:56So...
47:57Oh!
47:58Yeah, he was in.
47:59I was in the last block.
48:00I was in the last block.
48:01I was in the last block.
48:02I was in the last block.
48:03I was in the last block.
48:04You didn't check the wall off the box?
48:05But, er, two weeks go by and I am getting discharged,
48:08so anyway, I have to go get my after photos.
48:10So, erm, the person can see I'm very, very nervous,
48:13the photographer, and, like, it was quite an old woman,
48:15and next thing she said, like,
48:16don't worry, son, I've seen it all, I've seen it all.
48:18So, I relaxed, turned around, pulled down my trousers,
48:22pulled down my pants, bent over,
48:24and next thing all I hear is a gasp and, holy shit!
48:27I just look, bright red face, it's like I've seen it all now, son.
48:30And that was it.
48:33I mean, I do love that story.
48:36Do you mind, do you want to walk or do you want to be flipped?
48:40Yeah, flip me.
48:41Yeah!
48:42There you go!
48:44I think we're all missing in that story.
48:48Come on.
48:49I didn't want to cry, but what on earth was the operation?
48:53What was the operation?
48:54And why did they need before and after things?
48:57For a medical journal.
48:59Like, it's been published.
49:01Very dodgy.
49:02It's a published book.
49:04Google it, kids.
49:07OK, that really is all we've got time for.
