00:00Tonight, we're hearing from the mother of a man declared missing in Myrtle Beach.

00:10This is not like our son. He would not just disappear without a trace. He just wouldn't.

00:17Not knowing where her son is or if he's okay, she's living a mother's worst nightmare.

00:24I'm worried that he is hurt. It's the not knowing. It's the nightmare in all this.

00:30I'm worried that someone is hurting.

00:33I just beg the public to keep us in your prayers because, you know, God is the only one that's going to get us all free.

00:46Every suspect accused of a crime has the right to remain silent.

00:51Many agree to be interrogated anyway, but they can stop the interview at any moment, making it a race against time.

01:00Justice hangs in the balance.

01:02Christopher Bowling's mother contacted the Myrtle Beach Police Department because, even though he was 25 years old,

01:19Chris was the sort of person who got in touch with his mother fairly frequently, but he didn't make any contact for five or six days.

01:26He stopped showing up at work. It got to the point where several people were concerned.

01:30Chris's mom, she was just extremely emotional and convinced that something bad had happened to Chris.

01:41Shortly after police received the phone call, they checked local hospitals.

01:45No hits on the hospital. They went to his apartment, knocked several times.

01:50No answer at the apartment. They had no leads. It's like he had just vanished.

01:54Marissa shared with us that Chris was from Tennessee but moved to Myrtle Beach because his son, who was two at the time,

02:22lived in Myrtle Beach, lived in Myrtle Beach, lived in Myrtle Beach, and he wanted to be closer to his son.

02:27She told us that on July 28th, Chris was supposed to have their son and that she had not heard from him.

02:37She said that was very out of character and unlike him, that he was always reliable when it would come to meeting with his son.

02:46And she was extremely worried about Chris.

02:51There was no activity after the late evening of the 27th.

03:06We still weren't sure if there was some kind of foul play, but we all felt that something bad had happened to Chris.

03:14Chris was my best friend. He would even tell people, I'm a mama's boy, you know.

03:32He had a big heart. He loved his sisters.

03:39With the youngest one, when she was born, Chris called her his baby and he was very protective of her.

03:48He was so special and so gifted.

03:52He became passionate in rapping at the age of 14, 15, some around in there.

04:01I mean, to hear him spit those lyrics out like he did, it's unreal.

04:07Chris had ambition, perseverance.

04:12As he got older, he was wanting to be a producer.

04:14He would make beats for other kids out there that wanted to go into that type of music.

04:23When he went missing, I felt like I'm in a nightmare and I'm never going to wake up.

04:31I keep looking at my phone, hoping that he would text or call.

04:37I was praying that Chris was alive.

04:44July 27th is not only the last day Christopher Sky Bowling was officially seen in Myrtle Beach,

04:57but it's also the last day Kelly similarly says she heard from her sons.

05:02We want answers. We want to know where our son is.

05:14We are speaking with Tyler Panzarella.

05:24How long have you known Chris?

05:29Not too long.

05:31He advised that he did not know Chris very well, that he had met Chris through a mutual friend.

05:38And so his son and stuff is here, so he was asking me, he's like, hey, I want to come down to Myrtle Beach and everything.

05:46Could you help me out and let me stay with you? I'll pay you rent or whatever.

05:49And I was like, yeah, no problem.

05:51And then Tyler told us that Chris decided to come down here with his two friends from back home as well, Bailey and Nick.

05:57Once they arrived, Bailey and Nick also asked, hey, can we also stay with you for some time?

06:03And he agreed, yes, they all could stay there temporarily.

06:05Last time I heard from him, I think it was like the 26th, 27th, I believe it was.

06:12And then he just kept talking about, like, this girl he was talking about and going to, like, North Carolina with her.

06:19Who's the girl, do you know?

06:20I have no idea. I don't know the specific name.

06:23And then, like, didn't answer my phone calls or nothing, anything at all.

06:29Do you have Bailey and Nick's numbers?

06:31Yeah.

06:31Tyler said that after Chris went missing, Nick and Bailey had moved back to Tennessee.

06:39Tyler didn't seem nervous.

06:42But the information he was sharing that Chris would all of a sudden run off with a girl as much as he cared about his son, it didn't make sense.

06:52There was a gut feeling that things weren't adding up and that something was wrong.

06:57Nick Henry said that he had not spoken to Chris since the end of July and that he had basically left Myrtle Beach to do with a girl.

07:18Again, it was just more of the same story that just didn't make any sense to us.

07:23Something just wasn't right.

07:24Detectives delved into his Snapchat, found a couple posts that he had made the day that he went missing.

07:46He had posted a full-body selfie where you could see what he was wearing.

07:50The shoes he was wearing were some blue Jordans.

07:52We learned that Chris was actually making plans to stay in Myrtle Beach.

07:58He was in the process of getting his own apartment.

08:01He had posted on social media on the 27th showing that apartment complex.

08:05That contradicted what we had learned from Tyler and Nick as far as him leaving town with a girl.

08:10We were very suspicious of Tyler.

08:36So we had a cadaver dog come and be on scene during the search warrant.

08:42The cadaver dog that was brought in actually alerted inside the apartment between the living room and the master bedroom.

08:50That was a location that Chris was known to sleep at.

08:53And when the dog got to the area, it positively alerted for human remains.

09:01Speaking to the people that are in charge of those dogs, they said it could have been something as simple as some kind of trace evidence or something being carried from clothing or from the shoes and that kind of stuff to the apartment.

09:13So at that point, we are transitioning from this missing persons case to now we're having direct evidence of a homicide.

09:20So we're going to take a look at the inside of the apartment.

09:50our game plan was to start non-confrontational and kind of let him run the interview at that

10:02point all you're signing for is that i read to your rights and you understand those rights

10:06then after we get his statement on video we would start questioning the inconsistencies

10:13and make it more of an interrogation what date was last time you saw chris

10:19so what was the circumstances around that like it was his money said he was leaving

10:25so i mean like you guys inside when he's like packing up his stuff like what's

10:32anybody else go to you guys yeah nick and bailey went with me to devon's um did you guys hang

10:42around until you saw him leave or you guys just dropped him off

10:44now he's locked himself into the story then that's when we decided to transition to the

10:55interrogation asking direct questions and being able to verify whether he's being caught in a lie

11:00you know originally we were kind of helping the missing persons division okay at this point i mean we

11:13think that something happened to chris and we're obviously talking to you because you're one of the

11:18the last people that saw him okay this is important part okay for you to basically be 100 truthful

11:23and just listen if you're like okay um to tell us everything you know okay because we think

11:31something happened you're possibly an accident okay and we think you know something about it

11:36we've been investigating for a long time the myrtle beach police department has not

11:51not solved an investigation like this since 2000 okay 20 years

11:56so what do you think what i was saying that was the interesting truth you know i mean i haven't

12:03seen him since then i'll tell you right now when we came here into the search warrant we had a

12:08cadaver dog come the dog alerted to possible deceased person in your apartment

12:12it's what i'm trying to do i mean i'm not playing games with you if you're i know i'm just i know

12:26what i'm saying is i'm trying to give you every opportunity to basically tell us anything

12:30additional you may have we need to know now because later on when we put the puzzle together

12:36which we're gonna do we're not gonna have this conversation that makes sense you can tell tyler

12:43was getting a little nervous it's at that point he realizes that his story's falling apart so he has

12:51an option and the option is to change a story or tell the truth

12:55i don't know specific things

12:59i was praying that night i guess it's like little like little arguments like over stupid stuff

13:06have you ever had a weapon

13:10do you think that nick or bailey would be capable of doing something to chris

13:23i'm gonna say bailey i mean

13:27just from like the way nick talks and carries himself

13:30and so like he likes that weird stuff about or basically like that he might have done

13:47and i just scared the out of me but i've never been around that i've never like you know what i mean

13:51what did he tell you what was the road what's that old haunted road like a lucas bear road

13:56i never heard this story

13:57it's like apparently i want to go back there

14:00it was saying he went there

14:01and like did something or whatever like said he killed somebody

14:05but like and that's when my gun went missing

14:08but i don't know who it was because it's scary

14:11well here hearing that story

14:13yeah

14:13do you think it could be chris

14:15i mean now yeah honestly

14:18as tyler is recounting that part of the story

14:24i felt that he was telling partial truths

14:30but we were trying to just not show any reaction

14:36just keep him talking

14:38if you're scared of nick or bailey or someone else

14:42or you know the best thing you do if you want to help yourself out is tell the truth

14:45so did you see chris dead at any point

14:49okay

14:54can you tell us what happened

14:55the vehicle was telling me to go there

14:58he thought we were just going to go do some like haunted stuff

15:00or like how that road or whatever

15:02so like we went there

15:03and then like he uh had my gun or whatever

15:06and then just like it

15:08like just shot him

15:10x shot chris

15:15how many times did you shoot him

15:17where

15:20then what happened

15:22i completely understand

15:31when he's talking about shaking and freaking out

15:36he's showing no emotion at all

15:39to me

15:40his demeanor seemed like he's being dishonest

15:44but we were extremely concerned with finding out where chris was

15:49so we didn't want to press too much

15:53so you're out there on lucas road

15:54who's with you

15:58the four of you get out of the car

16:01and what happens

16:02we just walk into the woods

16:05and just shot

16:06what was the conversation before the gun went off

16:09nothing

16:10we're just all walking through the woods

16:12so how did nick get the gun

16:14i mean he just took it out of your car

16:15or he got the gun when he got you out of the car

16:17because i was i was walking

16:19and i um

16:20because he told me to bring it or whatever

16:22so i was like okay

16:22and then he was like hey let me see it

16:24and i was like what he said i just want to shoot it or whatever

16:27so they're like it hit

16:28and then i hand it to him

16:30how far were they standing

16:32i like

16:33okay so

16:36six feet

16:38you ever take

16:39arm extended

16:41or

16:42yeah

16:43no

16:43no you can't

16:45you don't have anything your hand

16:46yeah

16:46i could tell that

16:52he was reliving that moment

16:55he appeared to be seeing chris

16:59he didn't see me standing there

17:01and you could just see the blank look in his eyes

17:04it seemed like he was the one that shot chris

17:09and he was trying to shift the focus to nick

17:13he seemed to be giving us all the facts of the case

17:16just downplaying his involvement at that point

17:19so did nick say anything right after shaman

17:22nothing

17:23he just was quiet

17:24and then he just like

17:25he was like

17:25take this

17:26so he gave you back the gun

17:27yeah

17:28i didn't know what to do

17:29so i just

17:29grabbed him and went to the car

17:31he's telling us that

17:32nick shoots somebody with his gun

17:34with tyler's gun

17:36and then

17:37gives the gun

17:38back to him

17:39at this point

17:40you'd be able to point the gun

17:42at nick if you want to

17:43you'd be able to say

17:43i'm leaving

17:43i'm getting in my car

17:44i'm not taking you with me

17:45i'm going to the police

17:46it just doesn't make sense

17:48so where's his body now

17:50like lucas road somewhere

17:51yeah

17:52you think he could get as close to the spot

17:54yeah

17:55you know i could fly

17:56that way

17:56that moment

18:00tyler

18:01was

18:02the lead in the homicide investigation

18:04at that point

18:08we did not have any

18:09physical evidence

18:10and we did not have

18:13a body

18:13so we charged him

18:16with obstruction of justice

18:17for

18:18impeding and hindering

18:20our missing person investigation

18:23he's a gun back down there

18:24you got a handcuff key on your thing

18:38you just want to get him out and take the shackles

18:52swing your feet around man

18:56we're gonna take these

18:57leg shackles off

18:58real fast

18:58the entire time

19:05didn't put off the air

19:07of being

19:08scared

19:09he was just

19:11cold and

19:13emotionless

19:14to the right

19:22it's kind of like saying that you're uh

19:25one two o'clock

19:26i think that's about the spot then

19:33in that moment

19:34the

19:35lack

19:36of emotion

19:37just solidified

19:38that he was the one that shot chris

19:41be careful where you're stepping up

19:45there's a

19:46crime scene

19:47you remember what shoes he was wearing that night

20:10it's like blue jordans

20:12from where i'm standing i can see

20:23shoes that appear to be the same shoes that chris was wearing in the

20:26snapchat from the night before he went missing

20:29for me that was probably one of the biggest moments of the case because at that point you know

20:35that

20:35it's more than likely going to be chris

20:38i remember telling my husband

20:58he's gone

21:01he's gone

21:03i didn't want to believe it

21:05i would have died for him

21:08he was my first

21:13once the body's found we decided let's basically turn the heat up

21:42we were trying to

21:43rattle tyler

21:45we're trying to get him to make a confession

21:46as a law enforcement officer you're actually allowed to lie in interviews

21:50you just got to be careful as far as you know what you're lying about

21:53sergeant lent tells them

22:06that he just talked to nick and bailey

22:08and that they are saying that tyler is the shooter what he is saying is a lie

22:17we had not spoken to nick or bailey we wanted to see if he changed his story or what his reaction was

22:24they're saying that you planned this you drove him out there you had the gun

22:30y'all walked out there you gave the gun you shot him

22:35no i never had a problem with chris nothing ever

22:42i'm not like that man

22:43i don't

22:44i came from a good family

22:46i promise you man

22:47i would never do that to someone ever

22:49they say you did it

22:50no

22:55i'm telling you i'm a good person i would never never in my entire life ever

23:01you saying he was a good guy

23:02why didn't you call 9-1-1 whenever you left there you just left him out there to die

23:07because i was scared man

23:08i didn't know what to do

23:11this is your chance i mean did you do it

23:15i'm trying i'm being 100 honest on everything no i told you everything that happened i was

23:23so what was it an accident you shoot him by accident

23:26i never saw him

23:27or you were just a monster and just say hey i'm going to take you to the woods and blow your head off

23:32no man nick had the gun it's been like he scares me he's been scared ever since like he got like that's the type of person he is

23:42so for a normal person if you are scared and you just saw somebody murder somebody

23:46are you going to one take that gun back and if you're truly nervous now you have the only weapon

23:51so at that point why not remove yourself from the situation but he's doing everything that nick

23:56tells him to do even when nick no longer has a gun which is kind of strange

23:59i tried no i should have told you guys i've never been around that i've never been in that situation

24:05if you're surrounded by someone every day you're gonna get on each other's nerves

24:43and all these guys have told me everything that's been going on

24:46for the last three or four weeks or whenever the hell this started

24:59where do you want to be that best person

25:02let me tell you right now you're fixing to go to prison

25:05guess what's going to get done to tyler

25:08you're going from here you're going to get charged with murder

25:10you're going to be charged with killing chris

25:12do you understand that

25:33tyler you've played the game in here long enough

25:35you're involved in some

25:41that you would have never ever

25:44ever been done if you were a good person

25:48because you don't go out to lucas bay lights

25:50and bring a gun into the woods at night

25:54if you ain't got something planned

25:56so be honest

25:58this story to be able to tell this story shouldn't take you any more than five minutes

26:01from beginning to end

26:03so that's what you think you think i'm just that type of person

26:07yeah i think you're the kind of person that takes a friend out into the middle of the woods

26:10from what representation though as well

26:32it takes you a month to come forward and say

26:35i didn't know what to do

26:38you're a good person

26:39but good people you know what they don't do

26:41they don't leave a kid to lay out in the woods to get eaten by animals

26:44that's what you did

26:54it may appear that he lost his patience and left the room

26:56but that's by plan

26:58quote unquote bad cop

27:00then detective dewitt be the big cop

27:02that was pretty much our strategy at that point

27:04after lent's no longer in the room

27:06hopefully tyler is now going to open up to the other detective that's in that room

27:10because he's being nice and reasonable

27:12i want to talk to him

27:15is there anything else you could think of anything whatsoever

27:20you know what happened you know what the story is

27:22you know where the body is

27:24and stuff like that

27:25i made a mistake

27:27i should have came to you guys sooner

27:28and i should have just i was i didn't know what to do

27:30i had no idea

27:32but now i gotta live with that

27:35there's really nothing i can do to get away from this

27:48he never came out and said he was the one who did it

27:50but the interrogation of tyler

27:52he was critical

27:54because he put himself there

27:56he was the only one who owned a gun

27:59his story it didn't make sense

28:01it didn't all match up

28:03what is important to consider in this case

28:06is that nick and bailey are from tennessee

28:11meanwhile tyler is from around here

28:13if any of them would be familiar with a local ghost story

28:17that is urban legend around here

28:19it would certainly have been tyler

28:20now it was extremely important for the officers to talk to nick and to talk to bailey

28:33for them to establish everything that happened during that shooting

28:36what happened during that shooting

29:06he was like very

29:07thrown off his game because he was obviously seeing us from myrtle beach in horry county i'm sure that heightened his senses and the fact where it's like he knows why we're there

30:52He was so emotional that he wasn't, he couldn't control himself.

32:29I guess Sky said something about his nephew or something like that and started making fun

32:35of him and Tyler just looked at him like that was the last straw.

32:40So, they haven't really got along.

32:46We're just driving and driving and I didn't know where the hell we were going and all his

32:51faces are so old dirt broke and he's talking about some haunted forest, some haunted stuff

32:57and everybody was just freaked out and we started walking and he made sure he was behind

33:06and we all got somewhere wherever he wanted us to go to.

33:11But he told us that it's just to be fun and he just scoops him.

33:16I was just terrified.

33:21I didn't know if I was going to talk to him and, you know, I've never seen anything like that before and I didn't know what to do.

33:33So, you didn't touch the body at all?

33:39I was scared.

33:44He just popped him in front of me.

33:47One of the differences in the interview with Nick as opposed to the interview with Tyler, Nick was very upset and showing fear, a lot of emotion.

34:05He just seems to be saying what he's feeling and exactly what he's trying to convey.

34:12He's actually scared of the whole situation compared to like what Tyler is very composed.

34:17You already said he shot?

34:20Tyler said I shot him?

34:22Mm-hmm.

34:23Cause Tyler shot him.

34:24Like, like listen bro.

34:26Like, I was telling y'all that God's known it's true.

34:32When you see someone get extremely emotional in the face of an allegation of a crime, moving around and waving around, usually they're being honest because they're worried and upset that you're going to believe false information.

34:55But with Nick, we thought to push him a little further and see if his emotions changed, if his demeanor changed, and if anything in his story changed.

35:10And I have the proof that it was his gun.

35:13It was the first day I met him and he showed me.

35:16It was not me.

35:17I swear to God.

36:56So you're seeing him actually get frustrated, getting angry about the situation because he's being blamed in his mind for something that he didn't do.

38:01Watching Nick, I think that his emotions were real in that aspect.

38:04Everything he said and the way he was reacting, I really believe that he was scared of Tyler at that point.

38:08What made it believable was the fact that Nick was not just scared for himself.

38:15He was scared for his grandfather and for his family.

38:19He seemed to get more emotional talking about that.

40:33where the vehicle was parked

40:36and the way they were standing in the woods.

40:39And it just strengthened our case

40:44and Nick and Bailey's version of events.

40:54Bailey gave police all the information

40:56that he was able to,

40:58and he did not lie.

41:00Investigators determined that Bailey's involvement

41:02in this case was mere presence,

41:05and at that point,

41:06he was allowed to leave the police department.

41:07Bailey was never charged

41:10with anything related to this case.

41:14The interrogations were extremely important

41:17in this case.

41:19The initial interrogation with Tyler

41:23was obviously the huge turning point.

41:31All three interrogations put together

41:34gave us that timeline of events

41:37and the details of what happened that evening.

41:42Normally, you can kind of keep yourself

41:46detached from cases.

41:48For some reason, this case,

41:49it was like Chris didn't do anything

41:51to kind of bring this upon himself.

41:52He was trying to go to work,

41:54trying to be in his child's life.

41:56We all really fought really hard

41:58to try to find the facts

41:59and the truth of what happened in this case

42:00to bring closure to his family.

42:03We all really did.
