00:01Now, do you have a Nina princess in there?
00:04Maybe, who knows?
00:06Kayla's move from New York to London
00:08fulfills a uniquely inspired dream.
00:10My grandparents immigrated from Cuba.
00:13I always wanted my own international love story.
00:16I'll be a full-time student living on my savings.
00:19Is this why you tell me you've got a pet as well?
00:21Yes. You have?
00:22Oh, right.
00:23Goldfinger has been in here with his Midas touch.
00:27I'm just concerned about the price.
00:29This is how much it costs this close to central London.
00:31Oh, dear.
00:32The key's not working.
00:34Oh, no.
00:35But look, you might be able to use it like for the dinner gong.
00:38Oh.
00:39As well.
00:53Look, this way.
00:54I got the idea of moving abroad from the stories my abuela told about how they've immigrated from Cuba.
01:04So I always wanted to experience another culture country on my own.
01:09But unsure how or where to seek international adventure, in the meantime, Kayla found success in New York's hustle and bustle.
01:16I love the diversity, all the people, but working a corporate job is very difficult.
01:22So a couple of years ago, I booked a month's stay in London and I loved it.
01:26I just love walking around the city.
01:28I love the architecture, the history.
01:30There's so much to do here.
01:32Plus, I am single.
01:35I'd love to find a kind of love that my grandparents have here in London.
01:40So I love the accents.
01:43And I started to see myself in London maybe more full-time.
01:47Hoping to rejuvenate her life and love life, Kayla's packed up her pooch for a complete reset in London.
01:54I decided to pursue my master's degree in HR at the University of London.
01:59I will be a full-time student again, which will be quite the change.
02:04London is a pretty expensive city, similar to New York.
02:07But I'll be living off savings and attending school.
02:11Hi.
02:12Hi, we miss you.
02:13I miss you too.
02:14Look how pretty the street is.
02:16Beautiful.
02:17I love you.
02:18Have you flown with the dog parked near for Miko?
02:20Not yet.
02:21Miko is my two-year-old Cavapoo.
02:24He is my child, as some would say.
02:28I'm super thankful that Miko can make the move with me because I'm feeling anxiety, stress, nervousness.
02:36How are you finding London?
02:37What have you been up to since you've been here?
02:39It's been great.
02:40Exploring the city, going to different markets.
02:42I love London's diversity.
02:44I love the culture here.
02:46I love that Kayla is single and ready to mingle.
02:49So there's a lot of variety.
02:51Everyone's up for dating.
02:52And the University of London has a wonderful campus right in the heart of central London.
02:57But unfortunately, the rental market is pretty overheated.
03:01So it's very expensive.
03:03I want to be as central as possible.
03:05Somewhere like Notting Hill.
03:07I'm hoping that can be a good way for me to meet more people.
03:10Preferably a two bedroom, one bath.
03:13Right.
03:14Obviously, some kind of space for Miko would be nice.
03:17Mm.
03:18British charm on the exterior.
03:20Okay, sure.
03:21And I can't help but notice that you've got some tools with you.
03:25These are for you, actually.
03:27Oh, really?
03:28Yeah.
03:29A tape measure?
03:30You're going to be putting me to work.
03:31I know.
03:32I'll be bringing my couch from my Brooklyn apartment.
03:36Right.
03:37This is where you tell me that your couch is extremely long.
03:40Yes, it is.
03:41Right.
03:42116 inches.
03:44Well, I hope you've got a lot of money to spend because you know London's very expensive.
03:482400.
03:49Okay.
03:50I mean, I'm worried about getting two beds on this kind of sum of money.
03:55Mm-hmm.
03:56Ugh.
03:57One-bed apartments generally go for 2,500 or more.
04:01So she's going to have a very quick reality check on that.
04:04So we're going to see an apartment now in Hyde Park.
04:08It's very central.
04:09I love it.
04:10I think it's going to be perfect for Miko because he's going to have the whole park to run around in.
04:15It is a really nice area.
04:16It's beautiful.
04:17Miko would definitely give it the thumbs up because the park is actually just over there.
04:22He would love it.
04:23He would love it.
04:24I've brought you to see a one-bedroom ground floor flat.
04:27Obviously, I was hoping for two.
04:29We're obviously very central, so it's $2,800.
04:33Ooh.
04:34Okay.
04:35Being on a student budget, I'm just really concerned about the price, but...
04:39Come on.
04:40Let's see if we can make it work.
04:41So we're just in here, okay, Mia?
04:44Now, some might call this a bedroom fit for a princess.
04:48Do you have an inner princess in there, Kayla, that we haven't met yet?
04:52Maybe.
04:53Who knows?
04:54Does the furniture come with you?
04:56It does, actually, yeah.
04:57So see if the bed's comfortable.
04:59Oh, I think, you know, we just need Miko by your sides there and that could work.
05:03Yeah.
05:04Well, he would take up the whole bed, so...
05:06Oh, right, okay.
05:07Yeah, it is comfortable and it's a good size.
05:10Okay, well, let's go through and have a look at the bathroom now.
05:14Well, it's actually a good size.
05:17And they haven't gone too over-the-top style-wise here, thankfully.
05:21No, no.
05:23So let's go and have a look at the kitchen.
05:29Look at this!
05:30How do you fancy a kitchen disco, eh, Kayla?
05:34All you need are a few flashing-coloured lights.
05:37A disco party.
05:39Well, look, not huge, but it's got everything you need.
05:42Mm-hmm.
05:43It's a bit annoying being a student again, because I have to kind of penny-pinch,
05:46but I'm quickly realising that I don't think it's possible
05:49to have the perfect apartment in London at the moment.
05:52Okay, let's boogie on to the lounge now and see what you think of that.
05:58You've got this sort of reptilian wallpaper over here,
06:01and Goldfinger has been in here with his Midas touch.
06:07Yeah, I am concerned about the couch.
06:10Oh, yes, we should probably measure this, shouldn't we?
06:12Oh, right.
06:13We want ten feet, don't we?
06:15Do you want to go down there?
06:16Okay.
06:19Tell me when to stop.
06:21Just here.
06:22Is that it?
06:23It will fit.
06:24It will fit.
06:25Oh, my goodness.
06:26Sign on the dotted line now.
06:29But overall, it's all about the location, isn't it?
06:32Miko will drag you to Hyde Park and you'll be there in two minutes.
06:36Every day, all day.
06:37Yes.
06:38I'm relieved to be close to school and city centre living in London,
06:43but the price...
06:44I understand that.
06:45I mean, this was in many ways a reality check.
06:48This is how much it costs to live this close to central London.
06:52Look, I would prefer to speak to Miko about this because he is just going to love Hyde Park.
06:57That's true.
06:58I think he would be persuaded.
07:00Miko, where are you when I need you?
07:03So Richard sees if something more to Kayla's style will make her more comfortable with cost.
07:08I love this.
07:09The only thing that's missing is the waiter.
07:11Miko, two coffees.
07:12Oh, yeah.
07:13We need to get Miko trained as a barista.
07:14Now I'm a student at Richard, so it's a lot of money.
07:17Yes.
07:18So my abuela's always going to ask, but what's the dating game here?
07:26Oh, right.
07:27She's very hot in the dating game.
07:29Every time we FaceTime, she asks, yes.
07:32My childhood was great.
07:33My abuela moved in with us at a young age.
07:36She's a huge inspiration to me.
07:38She moved to the United States when she was actually around my age,
07:42and we would just talk a lot about different cultures, different languages.
07:46And I started wanting to know more and experience it for myself.
07:49Are you a clubbing kind of girl?
07:51No.
07:52No, you're not.
07:53I like more of the relaxed pubs, bars.
07:55Oh, right.
07:56And it's great you can bring Miko in as well.
07:58I know.
07:59Yeah.
08:00He loves it.
08:01By my early 20s, I did a bunch of traveling.
08:04It was like Pandora's box since it opened.
08:07So I'm now in my early 30s.
08:09I kind of always regretted not doing it sooner.
08:12Maybe if I just needed Miko with me as a travel buddy.
08:16I was able to get Miko approved to fly with me over in cabin.
08:20But still, the nerves are kicking in as a full-time student again.
08:24Absolutely.
08:25I think it's going to be a different lifestyle.
08:27And I'm just hoping that I can explore and have fun.
08:31Well, obviously, there are the apps.
08:34But you say that kind of the old-fashioned meeting people face-to-face is coming back.
08:38You know?
08:39Yeah.
08:40I hope so.
08:41She wants to be in a cool place, really, where she can take her friends.
08:45And she did mention Notting Hill.
08:47But it's very expensive.
08:49So it's a dilemma, really.
08:50Because here she is in London on her own doing a master's degree.
08:54And that sort of price is a pretty tough ask.
08:57Now, Kayla, I know you said you like Notting Hill.
09:00I'm excited.
09:01Yeah.
09:02Now, it does come with a big price tag, I'm afraid.
09:04But, you know, every inch in Notting Hill is worth its money.
09:08Yeah.
09:09I love the idea of living in this neighbourhood.
09:11I'm just not sure my budget loves the idea.
09:14I like the area.
09:15You can just walk around and feel like you really are in London.
09:19So it's a cool, memorable place to live, potentially.
09:22We could be in the movie with these beautiful Georgian terraced houses.
09:27And we're really about a 20-minute commute to university.
09:31So it would be fantastic for you.
09:33I've brought you to see a one-bed, one-bath apartment.
09:36There's one slight snag, which is that it's $2,700.
09:41Ooh, $2,700 isn't ideal.
09:44But I love the area.
09:46OK, well, look, let's go in and see what you think.
09:48OK.
09:50Here we go.
09:51Hope you like it.
09:56Oh, dear.
09:58The key's not working, Kayla.
10:00Oh, no.
10:01What do you think of the lobby?
10:03I don't know if I can live in the lobby, but...
10:05Let's make a call, see if we can work anything out.
10:08You know, occasionally we get to a property and the keys don't work.
10:12And unfortunately, this is one of those occasions.
10:15We're trying to get into the flat and the key isn't working.
10:18I've turned it all the way to the left.
10:2120 minutes.
10:22All right, yes.
10:23Can I see a coffee, Kayla?
10:24Sure.
10:25OK, yes.
10:26I must admit, I did buy a property for a steal once as an auction
10:29because the agent couldn't get into it and nobody but me saw it.
10:33So it can have its ups as well as downs.
10:36Let's hope it works this time.
10:39Come on through, Kayla.
10:40How's this?
10:41This is the lounge and kitchen.
10:43And it's quite nice and open concept, as you can see.
10:47Yeah.
10:48I love this.
10:50It's definitely much more my style, personally.
10:53Let's try out this couch for size.
10:56Hmm.
10:58I don't think we even need to get the measuring tape out here
11:01because I can see that your couch would fit along this wall.
11:04But is it possible to remove this couch?
11:07Yeah, I mean, we could talk to the landlord.
11:09And look, this table over here feels like sitting in a kind of Notting Hill cafe.
11:14I love this.
11:15I could see myself sitting here having a coffee.
11:18The only thing that's missing is the waiter.
11:21Miko, two coffees.
11:22Oh, yes, Miko.
11:23We need to get Miko trained as a barista.
11:25That would be a good one.
11:26Working on it.
11:28We've got a bathroom here.
11:31Hmm.
11:32That is teeny tiny.
11:33OK.
11:34I think you'll like the bedroom because it's nice and light and bright.
11:37OK.
11:40What do you think?
11:41Yeah, it's cosy back here.
11:42I like it.
11:43It's just so quiet, isn't it?
11:45It's nice.
11:46I've spotted this, actually.
11:47Let me just add to the serenity for you here.
11:51Very zen.
11:52You might be able to use it, like, for the dinner gong.
11:55Oh.
11:56As well.
11:58It has to be said, the apartment is quite compact.
12:02But Kayla's face lit up when she walked into the property.
12:05She wants to live the dream.
12:06I can see that.
12:07So I think this could really chime with her.
12:10It's not extremely spacious, but it's got a lot of charm.
12:12Charm to it that I really appreciate.
12:14And then the area is amazing.
12:16So it's like almost the dream London apartment on the dream streets.
12:21But as a student, I would like to see something a bit more within what I was looking to spend.
12:27Yes, and we have to go a bit further out of central London, really, for that.
12:33Yeah.
12:34I came to London wanting to explore and have fun.
12:37Maybe find the kind of love that my grandparents have.
12:40That apartment would be ideal for that.
12:43But all that takes money that I don't have, so we shall see.
12:50But all she sees is a step away from her dream.
12:53The most important part is that it's what she wanted to pay.
12:57I'm not so sure about living this far out of London.
13:05So what are the locals like, the Londoners?
13:08What would you say?
13:09It's like New Yorkers, I guess.
13:11So at first you think that they're, like, unapproachable.
13:14But the moment you get them talking, they're super friendly.
13:18OK.
13:19Yeah.
13:20I see myself as a bit of a risk taker.
13:22When I got my dog, I just kind of made a spur of the moment decision.
13:25I told my sister, cancel all your plans tomorrow.
13:28We're renting a car in New York and we're going to drive out to Pennsylvania to pick him up.
13:35There was no chance that I would move abroad without Miko.
13:39That's how attached we are.
13:41He, I think, has also caught the travel bug.
13:43So stepping off the plane, Miko immediately knew he was in a different world.
13:47A different environment.
13:48I think he was just as nervous as I was and had an internal, you know, freak out moment.
13:56But he got used to it a little bit.
13:58But Kayla hasn't, as this new culture has also been accompanied by the cash concerns that come with life as a full-time student.
14:06So what's dating in London like for you, Richard?
14:09Oh, dating in London can be complicated because it's such a vast city.
14:13And friends of mine say it's a numbers game.
14:14You know, you just have to kind of have a couple of dates a week and eventually you'll get there.
14:19So I'm thinking of taking her to Wembley Park, which is a nice suburb with lots of international students.
14:26I know that she would like to be somewhere a bit more interesting, but the most important part is that it's what she wanted to pay.
14:34I'm going to take you further out from the city centre now.
14:37OK.
14:38But it's also got quite a fast train out there.
14:40So I think you'll be looking at a sort of 30 minute commute.
14:43I was just hoping to be close to city centre.
14:47This feels very kind of industrial, so it's not ideal, but I really have to penny pinch.
14:57Now, how about this for contemporary urban living?
15:00We're right next to Wembley Stadium.
15:03I think I was just hoping for more British charm and more of a walkable area.
15:07The advantage of this area is we get more space for our money, of course.
15:11There is actually a dog park for Miko on the development.
15:14Perfect.
15:15Now, you've just got the one bedroom here, but it is nice and spacious.
15:20It's got a nice big balcony and it's just $2,400.
15:23So let's go up there and have a look at the views and see what you think.
15:27OK.
15:30So, come on through.
15:32Wow.
15:34Let's start with the kitchen look, because you've got a nice hob here and electric oven.
15:40I love the modern amenities.
15:42It's so much space.
15:44Well, look, let's explore the dining area a bit more.
15:47All those friends from uni coming down here, you could hold a seminar in here.
15:52I probably could do that, yeah.
15:54Yes.
15:55I think it's time to see if the couch will fit.
15:59So, we're looking for ten feet.
16:03Oh, my goodness.
16:04It's only nine feet.
16:06What if...
16:07Oh, we could try it this way.
16:08Do you think...?
16:10Hang on, let me go over here.
16:12Uh...
16:13Actually, this might work.
16:14Yeah, and I like the colour.
16:16I think this is great space.
16:18OK.
16:19Fantastic.
16:20Well, look, let's have a quick look at the bathroom before we go through to the bedroom.
16:26Oh, wow.
16:27It's nice and contemporary with neutral colours.
16:30It's a really big bathroom for an apartment.
16:33Great.
16:34Well, let's go back through.
16:36So, there's just the one bedroom, but it's a nice size one.
16:39It's good for storage.
16:41I am really impressed by the size, and especially the natural light.
16:46Kayla's face is saying it's nice and modern, and I can see she feels comfortable with such a lovely big open space.
16:53So, that's an important achievement.
16:55She's anxious about the fact that it's not period in any way, shape, or form.
17:00And she could be living anywhere, really.
17:02So, you've got this really lovely big balcony opposite this global iconic stadium.
17:08I am concerned about the noise, especially since I'll be studying from home.
17:13When I dreamed of moving to the UK, no, I did not envision in the suburbs, industrial outskirts of London.
17:21But, obviously, being a student, I really have to penny pinch, and I'm concerned about that.
17:27Am I going to regret my choices and not experience this dream that I've had for so long?
17:34This is the challenge, really.
17:35There's not a lot you can do when you're in a really expensive central London location.
17:47Miko, it's very lovely to see you.
17:49Hello.
17:50So, are you going to help us make our decision?
17:53This is very important.
17:55Kayla's facing a tough test as she hopes to explore student life, a new culture, and maybe love in London.
18:04I'm feeling nervous, excited, like finally this is happening, and I've been waiting for it for a long time.
18:11But I'm starting to understand that my $2,400 price point may not be big enough for London.
18:17And I'm a student again, so I'm not sure how to make that work.
18:21What about Princess Palace? Because that was quite special, wasn't it?
18:26Do you have an inner princess in there?
18:28Who knows?
18:30I love the space of the room, but the colors are quite daunting.
18:35It's all about the location.
18:37Miko will drag you to Hyde Park, and you'll be there in two minutes.
18:40Every day, all day.
18:42Yes.
18:43That Notting Hill apartment was really the best British vibe to it.
18:46Yeah.
18:47The style of the space suited me much more than the other flats that we toured.
18:52This, to me, feels like sitting in a kind of Notting Hill cafe.
18:55Miko took off me.
18:56Oh, yeah, we need to get Miko trained as a barista.
18:59It's a one-bedroom, and the one-bedroom is a little small.
19:03Yes.
19:04So, what did you think of the stadium apartment?
19:06You look so happy in that kitchen.
19:08Yeah, I love the modern amenities.
19:11So much space.
19:12Mmm.
19:13But I'm not so sure about living this far out of London.
19:16I could find this apartment in another city.
19:18I was a bit concerned about the Hyde Park apartment, particularly the living space.
19:33I felt a bit crammed, and all the rooms were separate, so it wasn't, like, as open.
19:38And it was also $2,800.
19:40I think we could eliminate that one first.
19:42Okay.
19:43Well, you could have so much more for your money out in the suburbs.
19:47Mm-hmm.
19:48Coming from Brooklyn especially, space was at the top of my mind.
19:52I am concerned, though.
19:53It didn't feel like London to me.
19:56Yeah.
19:57Well, you look so comfortable in the Notting Hill apartment.
20:00Mm.
20:01It just seemed to fulfil that dream of yours.
20:04Yeah.
20:05Mm.
20:06Is Notting Hill kind of pulling on the heartstrings?
20:08It is.
20:09And maybe down the road, you know, after I finish school and, you know, full-time working
20:14again, that can be the dream apartment that I get at that point.
20:18But I think for now, Wombu Park seems too good to pass up.
20:21Oh, wow.
20:22Well, Miko, are you looking forward to that marvellous balcony?
20:25That's a yes.
20:26Yes.
20:27Oh, look, it's Bean.
20:28Okay.
20:29Ready for the ball?
20:30I think that Miko and I are becoming a couple of Londoners.
20:34Yeah.
20:35We have a really good dog park.
20:36He drags me there every second of the day.
20:38And then I often travel into London and explore some of the city or meet up with some of my school friends.
20:50Hi.
20:51Hi, Miko.
20:52It's been a challenge being a student again, just kind of getting back into the groove of things.
20:57But we just love the space.
20:59The kitchen is amazing and we've already started to host people and it's been really comfortable.
21:03It's a comfortable space.
21:05No, Abuela, I haven't met anyone yet, but we'll see.
21:10I still would love to have love, but I FaceTime my Abuela all the time.
21:15She's really proud of me because, yeah, moving to London is everything I imagined and more, actually.
21:24So I hope to stay as long as possible.
