00:00Coming up on Cards and Collectibles.
00:06An AFL card collector whose collection never gives him the blues.
00:13Why these precious gems are the most iconic cards in the hobby today.
00:21A Michael Jordan collector who chases his cardboard and his ink.
00:30There's hidden treasures all over this country.
00:33Vintage sports cards, they're almost like antiques.
00:36Come on a journey with Cards and Collectibles Australia
00:39where collectors from across the continent unite to showcase their treasures.
00:44It's got to be seven figures, it's got to be a million dollars plus.
00:48Witness the passion, the money and the stories behind Australia's most coveted collectibles.
00:55Back then they were laughing and now they're calling me a genius.
01:00Michael Jordan's dominance on the court made him a legend.
01:08And his trading cards are just as iconic.
01:11From his rookie card to rare inserts and autographs,
01:15MJ's cardboard legacy remains one of the most sought after in the hobby.
01:19I think when I was about 12 years old, the 92-93 playoff series, something around that.
01:29And that's when I kind of fell in love with basketball and Michael Jordan, the man himself.
01:37Growing up in Australia, most people were card collectors back in the day.
01:40Even if you weren't a basketball player or a fan of the NBA,
01:42the love of Jordan himself just made me keep chasing his cards.
01:45Going from the one-on-ones to the patches to the autos to everything you can think of.
01:51These are some of the key cards in the collection.
01:54We have here a 50 greatest players on-card auto.
01:59Limited to 50, number 23 of 50, so that's quite special.
02:02We've got a quad auto here.
02:05Jordan, Irving, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.
02:11There would be about around 50 signed Jordan cards in the collection.
02:18The first few cards of Jordan that I acquired weren't signed cards of his.
02:21They were just like as a rookie card or back then when they weren't too much money.
02:25At the time, it wasn't as high-end as it is now, so I was always on the hunt for something that I like the look of.
02:30Here we have a 2013 Exquisite Signature Kicks cards.
02:35These are limited to 15.
02:37The good thing is they're both on-card autos and it's the brand Jordan.
02:40I think this is from the tongue of the shoe.
02:43It's got the top and bottom of the Jumpman logo, which is like a set which is very hard to come by.
02:52You can't beat Jordan. Jordan Pioneer, the industry of Pioneer, Basketball, Pioneer Sport.
02:55So here we have the Metal Universe PMG Red.
03:00They only made 50 of these, unlike the original one where they made 90.
03:05This one's very desirable for any card collector.
03:08Very hard to come by.
03:09The PMG card came about through a friend in America who actually owns a card shop.
03:16He knew I was looking for some high-ended hard-to-get cards.
03:19That was a long time ago, pretty much when they were released.
03:21So it wasn't as high-end as it is now.
03:23But I look back, that's one of the primary ones in the collection.
03:26We also have the one-of-one Jordan 06 Hot Prospects Road to Springfield.
03:39Here we have a 06, 07 Ultimate Collections Exquisite Ultimate Triple Jersey Patch.
03:44So it's limited to 10. This is number 5 of 10.
03:47Some of the most desirable cards for any card collector are the Jordan Exquisite Limited Logos Collection.
03:55Here's two of them. Very, very desirable.
04:03Ultra rare, limited to 50. They're just a cool card.
04:06We have, which I consider the Holy Grail of cards, for me that is anyway.
04:15That's a quad auto.
04:16Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Magic Johnson on card auto, one of one.
04:24The card collection is cool, but the really interesting stuff that you want to see is the memorabilia.
04:28Whether you're looking for singles, boxes or card accessories, Sports Card World has had you covered for over 30 years.
04:43Come in and speak with their knowledgeable team about all things cards and collectibles.
04:47When you talk about the greatest NBA players of all time, the name Michael Jordan is often at the top of most people's lists.
05:05During the 1990s, there was no more a dominant player in the NBA than Michael Jordan,
05:09when he won six NBA championships, six finals MVPs and five league MVPs.
05:14During these three-peats, a savvy individual managed to obtain a game-worn and signed sneaker from each of Michael Jordan's championship clinching games.
05:24This collection was ultimately named the Dynasty Collection, which I was lucky enough to see myself in 2022.
05:31This unique collection, which will never be assembled ever again, sold in February 2024 for $12.15 million.
05:38For more record sales or to see the value of your collectibles, download the OneThirtyPoint app today.
05:48They're bold, they're shiny, and they've become the stuff of hobby legend.
05:54The 1997-98 Precious Metal Gems Red and Green sets.
05:58Widely considered the most iconic insert sets of all time, some individual cards now fetch millions at auction.
06:08With only 90 reds and just 10 greens of each player ever made, completing both of the 123-card sets seems impossible.
06:16But one determined collector is astonishingly close to pulling it off.
06:23Well, there's been lots of iconic sets over the years, insert sets, parallel sets, but nothing's quite reached legend status like the 97-98 Precious Metal Gems, or PMGs as we call them.
06:38I think what makes this set so special is just the design with the colouring of it, the reflection, some of the really cool photographs and everything was used in the set.
06:52As you can see here with the Sean Kemp Precious Metal Gem Red, look at how the colour pops.
06:59The red foil, it just reflects, it's just a thing of art.
07:02The player almost looks like it's coming out of the card a little bit, which gives it that really cool effect.
07:06The Precious Metal Gems are one of the first sort of parallel sets that were individually numbered.
07:15There's basically 100 cards that they produced, the first 10 being green, and then 11 to 100 being in the red foil to make a total of 100 cards produced.
07:25Comparing this set to modern day sets, people pulled cards numbered out of 100, out of 49.
07:30But back then there was so much product produced, and this was the only numbered parallel set to collect.
07:36So they weren't popping up in every box, maybe not even every case.
07:39That's how hard they were to get, and that's what makes them so expensive today.
07:42There's 123 different cards in the set, and it's made up of all the stars of the 90s.
07:52But key cards in the set would include rookie cards of Tracy McGrady, Tim Duncan, then stars like Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan.
08:01Whilst the red and the greens are both really collectible, I mean the reds do pop up a little bit more often than the greens, which makes the greens the holy grail to collect.
08:15As hard as these cards are defined and collect, there's one brave soul out there that's trying to collect the whole set of the red and green precious metal gems.
08:28His name is Nat Turner. He is the CEO of Collectors, and they also own PSA.
08:34It's really hard to believe. Forget money. It's just so hard to find all these cards.
08:54So for someone to actually put that entire set together just blows my mind.
08:58The PMGs were very condition sensitive.
09:01The unique foil that they used on the cards made them very easy to sort of chip and peel on the back of the cards.
09:06These days, it's very hard to find any in really mint conditions.
09:10So low grades are very, very common, but people don't seem to mind.
09:17Example was a Michael Jordan red PMG.
09:19That PSA 5 sold for $600,000 Australian dollars.
09:23Yes, I think if there was ever a PSA 9 or a 10 of a PMG, like I think that would be the ultimate collector card.
09:30I mean, these things are iconic and to get it in a really, really high grade, I don't even know if they exist.
09:36Yeah, I spoke about earlier the red PMGs and the superstar players and what sort of prices they go for.
09:50But when they come to the green PMGs, some of the prices will blow your mind.
09:54I remember back in 2001, I was at the National in Cleveland and I took some video of a whole cabinet full of green PMGs.
10:11It was a store from Japan that had over 80 different green PMGs, which was just crazy.
10:17It included all the stars and they had four Kobe brights, four Kobe brights, unbelievable.
10:23For all these reasons and more, that's what makes the PMG so special.
10:27They're not just rare, they're pieces of history.
10:34After the break, the ever rising market for high end AFL cards.
10:41And if a Michael Jordan autograph is priceless, what about hundreds of them?
10:48Which AFL signature card sold in a private sale for $50,000?
10:55A. Goal kicker quad signature.
10:58B. Ablett dual signature.
11:00C. Coach's quad signature.
11:03Or D. Shaw triple signature.
11:06Find out after the break.
11:13Welcome back.
11:14Did you select the right answer?
11:16Let's find out.
11:17Select AFL cards have been elevating the collecting game for decades.
11:29This has led to collectors like Wayne Haynes chasing high end AFL cards with values never before seen in Australian made products.
11:38Some of my earliest memories of footy cards would be nine, ten years old, walking down to the local shop and getting a pack of VFL, AFL cards.
11:52I hit a Stephen Kernaghan card.
11:54When Dad said that he played for Glenelg, I was like, sweet, I'm a Carlton.
11:58Carlton's my team.
11:59That was pretty much what got me hooked as a kid.
12:01The way I like to display my Carlton collection is have each shelf for Cripps and Sam Walsh, being my favourite players in collecting.
12:15Cripps has so many different cards he's got, but the jumper number dominance card to the 01 headliners card.
12:23It's the supremacy sets as well, which are the high end stuff.
12:27I have them each year displayed, but I can't fit the whole set in there.
12:31It's quite a large set.
12:36I've collected both NBA cards and AFL cards, and as I've gotten older, the AFL one stood out more to me,
12:43because it was something where I could get all of that team's card.
12:47The smallest product run I've seen is out of 25, so there's 25 of that one card,
12:52which means there's a chance that I can collect that card myself and get one of those.
13:01When I chat to people about collecting AFL cards, it's not something that I always bring up,
13:07because you do get a bit of a funny look like, how old are you, sort of look.
13:13One of the first questions they ask is, how much is your collection worth?
13:16I just sort of say, I'm not sure. I couldn't count it.
13:19For insurance purposes, I'd probably have to put a number on it soon.
13:26I've only collected Select over the years.
13:29Out of all the high end Carlton cards that Select have brought out,
13:32there will be maybe five or six that I don't have in my collection.
13:36The Dual Captain Signature is actually one of the most recent cards I've picked up,
13:43even though it's a number of years old.
13:45That was one of the cards I never thought I'd see or even own.
13:49I'm happy to say it's now in my collection.
13:53The Walsh DPS is such a good design.
13:56It's probably one of the best designs I think Select have done.
13:59They brought out another round of Influentials,
14:04and Sam Walsh was the Influential in that series.
14:07Probably the most sought out of that series.
14:09It took me a year and a half to get that card.
14:16The rush of opening up a pack or hitting a big card in a break,
14:20you know, your fist pump the air almost.
14:22It's just, yeah, it's awesome. Can't beat it.
14:24Hall of Fame legend cards are probably one of the most sought-after cards
14:29when it comes to AFL collecting.
14:37Jezzelinko!
14:43When Supremacy came out,
14:44the Supremacy set was high-end
14:47and something that AFL collectors hadn't seen before.
14:50The big hit in the 2021 series for Carlin Collectives
14:53was the Greg Williams Premiership to Brownlow Double.
14:59That card was actually gifted to me from a friend
15:02because I had helped him out with quite a few Hawthorn cards.
15:05Next thing you know, he was on my doorstep saying,
15:07hey, thanks for helping me out.
15:09This one's for you, and that's one I definitely won't forget.
15:14I'd say it'd have to be easily 30-plus years collecting Carlton,
15:18which has been a big chase to try and get all of them.
15:24In another 20 years' time, I'll still be collecting Carlton cards.
15:27I have no intention in selling.
15:30It's more about the collecting...
15:32It's the hobby for me, not about the money.
15:35It's just that buzz of getting that card in your hand
15:38and a little bit of feeling like a little kid again,
15:40but at the same time,
15:42it's getting a piece of the puzzle in your collection
15:45that you've been putting together.
15:56Who remembers the Sony Walkman?
16:02Before iPods and Spotify,
16:04the Sony Walkman ruled portable music.
16:07Launched in 1979,
16:09this game-changing device that you take cassette tapes anywhere.
16:13Whether it was the cassette of Thriller
16:15or your latest recording off the radio,
16:17The Walkman was a must-have for music lovers on the move.
16:22I remember playing my favourite cassettes,
16:24Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi,
16:26and I remember the headphones,
16:28the metal strip and the big phone that was over your ears.
16:31They were horrible.
16:32Head to our socials
16:33and tell us what you remember about The Walkman.
16:36Goat! Goat! Goat! Goat! Goat! Goat! Goat!
16:41Earlier in the show,
16:42Andrew showed us his impressive Michael Jordan card collection,
16:46but it doesn't just stop there.
16:48His love for the goat extends to autographed memorabilia,
16:52including jerseys, sneakers, balls and more.
16:56When I first started collecting the Michael Jordan memorabilia,
17:03I would say I was about 16 was my first piece
17:06and my friend owned a card store in Sydney
17:09and he had a piece of memorabilia.
17:11I saved up for it.
17:12It was $300 back then.
17:13It's an artist's print of Leroy Newman,
17:16who did a painting of Jordan.
17:19Jordan signed it.
17:20The artist signed it.
17:21That was the first piece I got.
17:22It just led to everything else that's now in the collection.
17:27I had the collection sitting in a room in my house for about 10 years
17:31and I'd literally forgotten about it.
17:33And then when the last dance came out,
17:35the Jordan hype was back.
17:36So it kind of reminded me to go and have a look at what I had.
17:39That's how the collection came out to be on display today.
17:41It's actually the first time I've seen my full collection on display.
17:46With the Bulls jerseys I have in the collection,
17:48I have pretty much one of each of the jerseys from all his seasons,
17:52from rookie up to when he finished.
17:54So this is a black pinstripe.
17:55It's a Hall of Fame jersey,
17:57where he's inscribed at Hall of Fame 23.
17:59That's a 19, I think it's a 98 finals jersey.
18:03Away, front, signed.
18:06This is a rookie jersey, signed on the front.
18:09A home jersey, standard 23.
18:12A 45 home jersey.
18:14Pretty much have every Jordan jersey that he's worn his career through.
18:19I'm the number five jersey,
18:21which most people wouldn't even know about,
18:22which was from the Pan American Games, I think in 1983.
18:26A couple of the unique signed jerseys I do have of his
18:28would be the Johnny Quilroy,
18:30which a lot of people probably don't know about.
18:32I have a number 12 jersey.
18:46Not many people knew he wore it.
18:48That's the game where his jersey got stolen.
18:50Wore number 12 for the one game against Orlando Magic.
18:53When I see Michael Jordan's actual autograph,
18:55I think it is a work of art,
18:57because I know Michael Jordan prided himself
18:59in getting his signature right all the time,
19:01and that was one of the things
19:02that sold me on his memorabilia.
19:09Currently in my collection,
19:10I believe there's about 75 signed jerseys,
19:13signed shoes.
19:14I think I have about 15 or 20 pairs
19:16of signed Michael Jordan shoes,
19:18signed basketballs.
19:19I think it was 13 or 14 at last count.
19:22Total close to 200 items
19:24signed by the great man himself,
19:26yeah, Michael Jordan.
19:27This is a picture of Jordan wearing this Blackhawks jersey.
19:32It's a little bit of controversy behind this one.
19:34He was invited to a Blackhawks game.
19:36Blackhawks are actually sponsored by Reebok.
19:38Michael, being a Nike guy,
19:39had a bit of controversy when this photo was released.
19:43Anyone that knows Michael Jordan knows
19:45he's an avid golfer,
19:46and here we have a few of his personal items.
19:49That's one of his old drivers.
19:51It's an eight iron that was from his personal golf bag.
19:54You can see it's an extended eight iron,
19:56so you know it was from him.
19:57A couple of signed golf bags.
19:58Here's a pair of his golf shoes.
20:00Still got the dirt and the grass on it,
20:03and the famous size 13,
20:04but he wore those in a round.
20:07Never met Michael himself.
20:09I did have a desire once upon a time.
20:10I think as I got older,
20:11it doesn't really bother me now.
20:13I'm pretty close to him with the amount of stuff I've got,
20:15so I've got a fair bit of his stuff that has his DNA on it.
20:18Here we've got the bench chair from the 97-98 season.
20:22That was against the Atlanta Hawks that game.
20:24And a good compliment piece to the chair is
20:26a NBA Finals team-issued used towel.
20:30Another pretty cool piece.
20:32I think you can still smell the sweat.
20:34Probably one of the cheapest upper deck authenticator items
20:36of Jordan you could get these days.
20:38That alone is probably worth around
20:40four to five thousand Australian dollars these days.
20:42Hence the reason why a lot of people are trying to forge his signature
20:45and sell things in the open market.
20:47One of the key items to look for is being upper deck UDA authenticator,
20:51which this collection is probably 90% UDA.
20:57Here's the Tagata hand signed piece.
20:59Jordan put his hand in some ink,
21:01done it on the Japanese Tagata paper I think it is,
21:03signed it across big bolts,
21:05limited edition release of his North Carolina days.
21:07Another item is the 30 years of 23.
21:13That was a limited edition box that Jordan's actually signed
21:16a pair of Converse shoes.
21:19There was 30 of those made.
21:21Jordan kept seven of those for himself,
21:23which he gave out to family and friends as gifts.
21:26The other 23 were auctioned for a children's charity in America.
21:29I managed to get number 11 of 23,
21:31and I believe that's the only one that's outside of America.
21:35When I look at the collection as a whole,
21:40yeah, it's kind of impressive to me,
21:42even though it's mine and I've had it for so long.
21:44I don't look at it as money value,
21:45I look at it as part of the collection
21:46that I laboured over the years to find and put together.
21:49One day I'd like them to go to my kids.
21:51Hopefully they'll appreciate it the way I did.
21:53If not, they'll probably cash in,
21:55and when Dad checks out, they'll check in.
21:58Ha ha.
