00:00Coming up on Cards and Collectibles, we find out this soccer collector's ultimate goal.
00:12Meet the Adelaide graphic designer who is disrupting the hobby and working with the biggest athletes in the world.
00:22And a pair of podcasters who just don't talk the talk when it comes to some of your favourite childhood toys.
00:30There's hidden treasures all over this country.
00:37Vintage sports cards, they're almost like antiques.
00:40Come on a journey with Cards and Collectibles Australia, where collectors from across the continent unite to showcase their treasures.
00:48It's got to be seven figures, it's got to be a million dollars plus.
00:51Witness the passion, the money and the stories behind Australia's most coveted collectibles.
00:58Back then they were laughing and now they call me a genius.
01:07Many Australians take pride in preserving the toys that shaped a generation.
01:12For Frank Allen, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are more than just nostalgia, forming a shell-shocking collection of the iconic toy line.
01:21Leonardo is my guy.
01:27Anything with that blue bandana, it just draws my eyes in.
01:30I got a Leonardo figure and I took it to school and everyone was like, what is that?
01:37They'd never seen Ninja Turtles, they didn't know what it was.
01:40Two weeks later the school introduced a rule that you're not allowed to bring Ninja Turtles into the school grounds because it was causing fights.
01:47The school banning it was a thing that made me want to collect it harder.
01:51He was my first ever turtle and so it's all his fault.
01:55This is how I've chosen to display my collection.
01:58I've got basically the focus on the vintage line all along here.
02:02NECA stuff which is the Mirage based stuff as well.
02:052003 reboot, big old line along there.
02:09Some of the more modern stuff, 2012.
02:11Stuff that kind of doesn't fit anywhere else.
02:14And then I've got stuff dedicated to the movie and vehicles in that corner over there.
02:19The first line of Turtles was 1988 in Playmates.
02:22It's that core cast.
02:24It's the four brothers, Leo, Don, Raf, Mikey, Shredder, The Foot Soldier, Bebop and Rocksteady, Splinter as well.
02:30And April which is sort of the sidekick.
02:33So if you were just collecting 1988 you get that real core representation.
02:42I think I want to continue collecting them because they're centered around a family.
02:46Whereas a lot of stuff is all like good guys versus bad guys.
02:49Turtles at its core is a family.
02:52It's four brothers.
02:53It's a single dad trying to, you know, save the world essentially.
02:57This is what my personal grail, one of the more expensive pieces in the line.
03:02I'm talking about Shogun Triceraton.
03:05A lot of chrome going on here.
03:07Some of these armor pieces are very fragile.
03:09You don't want to sort of move them too much.
03:11Pretty rare, pretty late run.
03:13He's one that collectors sort of thorn over because he's just amazing, amazing figure.
03:23There are figures that I bought 10, 15 years ago that have quadrupled in value.
03:28I don't care about the value.
03:30I'm about the presentation of it and how that looks on the shelf.
03:34And to me, they're toys.
03:35You got to free them from their plastic prison.
03:41The Troll Turtles, they're not one that are especially valuable, but they mean a lot to me.
03:45My wife always struggles to, you know, find something to add to the collection.
03:49But she did really well one year for my birthday and got me all four of the Troll Turtles mint in box.
03:55She likes the way I've sort of put their hair in different configurations to sort of match their personality.
04:00And so they hold a special place for me.
04:06My overall goal is to work my way through a complete collection of the vintage stuff, but mainly the figures.
04:12I'm currently from about 1988 all the way through to 1992 complete and sort of working my way through the later years.
04:20The vision would be a visual documentation of the entire line and all the figures in it.
04:31This is one of the more famous pieces of the Ninja Turtles line we're talking about from 1993.
04:36Scratch, he's a villain, he's a burglar cat.
04:39People love this guy.
04:42For whatever reason, he's the grail of the line.
04:48I got him probably about 15 odd years ago when spending $300 on a figure was considered insane.
04:56I look at the values of him now and it's been a pretty solid investment.
05:03Two types of collectors really.
05:05There are the MIB or mint in box collectors.
05:08And then there's people like myself.
05:09Loose is fine.
05:10Ideally, all the accessories and little parts that go with it.
05:14Actually, there's a guy I do a toy podcast with.
05:16His name is Trent.
05:17He is the opposite to me.
05:18Keeps everything in the box and he has some truly insane stuff still sealed.
05:23It's, you've got to see it.
05:25Whether you're looking for singles, boxes or card accessories, Sports Card World has had you covered for over 30 years.
05:39Come in and speak with their knowledgeable team about all things cards and collectibles.
05:44The Barbie brand has made a huge resurgence recently, mainly due to the box office hit released in 2023.
05:57But Barbie's beginnings date back as far as 1959.
06:00Barbie was the brainchild of Ruth Handler, the co-founder of the toy company Mattel.
06:04She was inspired to make Barbie by watching her daughter play with make-believe paper dolls of adult women.
06:13Whilst Barbie's resume is unparalleled by any other toy, the original doll is the most sought after.
06:19The original doll doesn't come up for public sale very often, but it is estimated that if one was to sell today, it would be worth around $40,000.
06:30For more record sales or to see the value of your collectibles, download the OneThirtyPoint app today.
06:38For many years, strict licensing with sporting leagues around the world created an industry without the competition for quality it once had.
06:46But an Adelaide graphic designer is now partnering with the world's biggest athletes and producing cards worthy of a museum.
06:59Card companies do all my work on Instagram and they're like, oh, these are really cool.
07:01We would love to see that on a card.
07:03Would you want to do it?
07:04And I was like, yeah, of course.
07:05Like I grew up collecting cards.
07:07It's a dream of mine to make a card one day.
07:09So it just went hand in hand.
07:10And that was 2014.
07:11And my first set was Tops Fire.
07:16I did some work with Panini.
07:17I did Kobe Hero vs Villain set, which is the last year of his career, which is really cool.
07:21Kobe is like kind of my idol.
07:23So that was amazing to do that.
07:25In 2020, I started working on these cards, Project 2020, where print runs and everything was publicly displayed.
07:31And I saw that and, you know, thousands or tens of thousands of people buying these individual cards.
07:36And I was like, oh, there's actually a demand for my work and people like it.
07:39So I believe that I could just kind of go out and do it myself.
07:42And that was kind of the birth of it there.
07:48First athlete I did was Jason Tatum.
07:50Before he was like an NBA champion.
07:52Now I wanted to invest into someone that I knew that was going to be good.
07:59Someone that I knew was able to get the deal sorted with his team.
08:02And, you know, we just agreed on it.
08:04Great.
08:05And outside of purchasing a house, that was the largest thing I've paid for in my life.
08:09I was like, I've got to bet on myself.
08:14All the NBA players were in a bubble in Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
08:19None of the card companies could get these guys to sign.
08:21But I shipped the box into the inside the bubble.
08:24You signed the cards in the bubble, mailed them back the next day.
08:27I got them within four days and people were going nuts because they were waiting for these redemptions of Jason Tatum and everything.
08:33And I was able to get something to the bubble and back to Adelaide in Australia within like four days.
08:40So it was pretty crazy.
08:42They sold out very quickly.
08:43It was a couple of minutes.
08:44The next day I woke up and there's like all these like agents and managers trying to do deals with me.
08:48So, yeah, it was pretty amazing to see.
08:50There's a lot of athletes now. Basketballers, I've got Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, Dennis Rodman, Gary Payton, Sean Kemp, Ja Morant.
09:04NFL players, I've done Dan Marino, Barry Sanders, I've done Calvin Johnson, Emmett Smith, Tyreek Hill.
09:12Boxers, I've done Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson and Tyson Fury.
09:17I've done some Australian athletes as well.
09:19So I've done Josh Giddy, Josh Green and everyone's favourite, Paddy Mills.
09:26Typically signing session, some of them are at card shows like the National in America.
09:31It's a good opportunity to get dual on cards.
09:33You know, if the players are going to be there the same day.
09:34I had Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson.
09:36They both signed their cards an hour within each other.
09:39Sean Kemp and Gary Payton, I had the same thing as well.
09:41They signed those a few hours in between each other.
09:44That is beautiful to me to be able to fly over and get a handful done.
09:48But in terms of like the private signings, they can be done at their house.
09:52Like I've done card signings that, you know, I went to Carmelo Anthony's house.
09:55I went to Floyd Mayweather's hotel room.
09:57I went to Tyreek Hill's house.
09:59And a lot of them are also done in Australia.
10:01If I hear of someone going to come down to Australia, I can set signings up here.
10:05Generally speaking, you know, I'd like to spend two weeks making the artwork, two weeks for printing and then allocating time for a signing.
10:15So I really do need like a month to work on it.
10:17And then I, you know, sell it if something's topical.
10:20Like Steph Curry, when he broke the record for 2974, the three point record, I had them signed before that.
10:26He even put the ball in the basket, which is, and so that's his first ever card.
10:31And then when the ball went in the basket, the site went live.
10:34Like it was a pretty cool moment, but also really cool that Steph was okay with that.
10:41One thing I am trying to innovate on is the packaging.
10:44I definitely was inspired by like how watch companies sell their products.
10:48People buy, you know, watches that are thousands or tens of thousands or a hundred thousand dollars.
10:53It's really presented well.
10:54It's, you know, it's a collectible.
10:55I'm just trying to have fun with it.
11:00The best thing is the people that I've been able to get a relationship with.
11:04That is the best thing.
11:06I think even about this hobby, it's not about owning the coolest card.
11:10It's going to a card show and going out for a beer after.
11:13And there's 30 guys and we're all talking about like, you know, basketball in the 2000s.
11:17That stuff doesn't happen outside this hobby.
11:20I think that's always going to keep me within it.
11:29After the break, a collector who's kicking goals with soccer cards.
11:34And the master of the universe, in figures that is.
11:41In 2021, which soccer star's rookie card sold for nearly $600,000?
11:47A.
11:48A.
11:49Pelle.
11:50B.
11:51Lionel Messi.
11:52C.
11:53David Beckham.
11:54Or D.
11:55Cristiano Ronaldo.
11:56Find out after the break.
12:04Welcome back.
12:05Did you select the right answer?
12:07Let's find out.
12:08Soccer cards are one of the fastest growing products in collecting.
12:19With Aussie stars playing their trade in the EPL and the World Cup, it has opened up a whole
12:24new ability to chase homegrown talent from big time international manufacturers like Topps
12:30and Panini.
12:38I was born in Dalian, the soccer city in China.
12:41I got a great passion on soccer.
12:43When I noticed there is trading cards about soccer, I started collecting and it never stopped.
12:48My favourite team is absolutely Manchester United.
12:55I packed mostly Manchester United players and team cards.
13:00I got 17, 18 season Topps Museum cards of Juan Mata, the big patch logo and that's one of one.
13:11The centre of the logo is the Red Devil.
13:14As a Manchester United collector, it's very special.
13:22My favourite Manchester United player is Paul Scholes, 2002 season jersey card auto.
13:30He signed number 18 of number 19 on the card.
13:34That was my dream card.
13:35The Holland rookie card is the most available card that I have.
13:43Number 25 orange Holland rookie card.
13:46I put it myself.
13:47So exciting.
13:53I follow Soccer Roots a lot.
13:55So China is not into that.
13:58So I try to collect all the Soccer Roots cards as much as I can.
14:05In front of me on the table are just part of my Soccer Roots Prism cards, the high-end ones.
14:14The front two rows are the ones in 2018 World Cup.
14:18This row are gold ones.
14:21Each of them are numbered to 10 only.
14:23And the front row is power gold, numbered to 5 only.
14:27One of my favourite sets to complete is this 2018 World Cup Prism Soccer Roots Aaron Moy.
14:41There are 15 cards in this set, including this super rare one of one, and power gold, number to 5.
14:48First off the line, number to 5, number to 8, Father's Day edition, and number to 10 gold.
14:55In 2016-17, Panini did a second year Immaculate Collection.
15:05It got Australian players in it.
15:08So I was lucky to get some one-on-ones, including a very rare Boots signature card one-on-one.
15:16That's got a piece of his boots with the Australian flag on that.
15:21From 2014 to 2019, it was just normal.
15:27And then after 2020, everything changed.
15:30I bought a card in 2014, Team Cahill, that's number to 5, landmark.
15:41When I got that, I actually made a trade.
15:43I used a $300 card plus $100 cash on that.
15:48If you've seen that in the market, I'm not surprised.
15:51It's someone priced it over $5,000.
15:55This is my Sam Kerr Inception full rainbow cards from 22 to 23 season, including the gold one-on-one.
16:09People keep asking, is that for sale?
16:11How could you get all the rainbow cards?
16:13That makes me a little satisfied.
16:17You know, you got the ones that everyone wants, and it's not for sale.
16:21People keep asking.
16:25The Kaelin Ford one-on-one.
16:30She's a Matilda.
16:32She's playing for a big club at Arsenal.
16:35With the Australian flag on the card, it's got everything.
16:43I grew up as a soccer boy.
16:45I got a huge passion of soccer.
16:48I still play in soccer myself.
16:50And I don't think I'll stop collecting soccer cards.
16:53If there is a museum about soccer brewers someday, I want to donate all those cards.
17:00Just put my name on that. That's all.
17:02That's all.
17:13Who remembers Beanie Babies?
17:19Stuffed with beans and stuffed with hype, Beanie Babies took the 90s by storm.
17:23Created by Ty Warner in 1993, these plush toys with adorable names and birthdates became an unstoppable craze.
17:30Unfortunately, the Beanie Baby craze collapsed in the early 2000s, turning once valuable plush toys into worthless collectibles.
17:38I remember here in Australia, they were called Beanie Kids.
17:42And we used to sell them in the shop.
17:44They were super popular.
17:45We would sell thousands of them.
17:47And then overnight they lost popularity and we were stuck with hundreds of them.
17:51Head to our socials and tell us what you remember about Beanie Babies.
17:56Earlier in the show, we met a passionate Ninja Turtles collector who focused on loose action figures.
18:07But for his podcast co-host, Trent, collecting takes on a whole new level, focusing on toys still sealed in their original packaging decades after their release.
18:18I'm a mint in box collector and basically that means I try to collect everything in its original packaging.
18:33The graphic design work was next level.
18:36You want to bring that into your collection, you want to represent that talent.
18:43My biggest passion is He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.
18:47This is my wall of vintage He-Man the Masters of the Universe action figures going from 1982 all the way through to 1987.
18:59He-Man was released in 1982 and the first run went to 87, 88.
19:06Boxed, I probably have about 80% of that collection.
19:10Loose, I'm sitting somewhere around 98, 99%.
19:14So I've got a number of valuable items by today's standards.
19:18One of my prized pieces in my He-Man collection is Savage He-Man.
19:23Or as he's probably better known, Wonder Bread He-Man or Wonder.
19:28You collected these Wonder Bread tokens from buying Wonder Bread and you would send those in and Mattel would send you Wonder.
19:42This sort of weird repaint of He-Man with brown hair, brown loin cloth and a black belt.
19:49A really obscure part of the He-Man lore, but a very interesting one nonetheless.
19:59If you think about Masters of the Universe, it outsold Barbie in the 80s.
20:04All the kids of the 1980s played with a He-Man toy.
20:08Fast forward 20, 30 years.
20:10That nostalgia has really driven up the collectability and the price of Masters toys.
20:22This is the Eternia playset.
20:24Holy Grail for the Masters of the Universe toy line.
20:28The beautiful lion's head motif.
20:30Characters come in here and you can grab and eat.
20:34This is three towers.
20:37The central tower is three stories tall, but that's not enough.
20:41Let's have another greyscale tower to one side and let's have a snake viper tower to the other side.
20:48We've got the monorail, which unfortunately is not attached because it's so brittle and prone to breaking.
20:54But it essentially joins greyscale tower, central tower and viper tower together.
21:00And you can place the different vehicles on the monorail track and it should electronically go around.
21:11People come in here and they say, it looks like a toy store.
21:14And that's the way I've tried to do it.
21:16And I wanted it to look like you're walking into a Toys R Us.
21:20Tyrandosaurus Rex for me is just so iconic.
21:27If you're a kid and you've got He-Man being combined with dinosaurs, it doesn't get much better than that.
21:33The action is incredible.
21:35Winding up and shooting that little disc out the front is one of the coolest things.
21:39Tyrandosaurus, it's this picture of discovery of things that you never knew existed as a kid.
21:45They became my new Holy Grail.
21:52And my favourite obscure villain of all time, Mosquito.
21:58This figure epitomises the wacky action features Mattel cramming into these things.
22:04There's a button on the back that you press and that pumps blood, right?
22:09So it looks like he's actually sucking blood and you can see the blood circulating in his chest.
22:15Like, that is insane.
22:22We were told by the marketing executives of these toy companies to collect them all.
22:26So now it's very much trying to almost be an archive of He-Man and the Master of the Universe.
22:31I have the power!
22:36And you can see I faded there because I don't have the voice stamina.
22:46Next time on Cards and Collectibles.
22:48The force is strong with this collector.
22:51We get in amongst it at a trade day.
22:57The Holy Grail of old toys amongst a movie memorabilia museum.
23:04And a modern card collector whose rookie year cards are skyrocketing.
