00:00In three days, our boat's gonna come down to Ohio River.
00:03This time on Moonshiners.
00:05I don't know about this situation.
00:07It's like the wrong neighborhood for us to be in.
00:09You know, I am sitting dead in the water right here.
00:12I mean, we got 1,000 gallons of liquor right here in these trailers.
00:14We don't have no sight of the boat
00:16that's gonna smuggle a liquor to Canada.
00:18You sure this is the place?
00:20I don't know of nothing, Howard.
00:22The man's there. He just unloaded the liquor.
00:24I said we'd go in there right now and talk to him,
00:26try to make a deal with him.
00:27I don't know exactly what this place is,
00:29or what all the peoples are doing here,
00:31but me and Jerry needs to be making this extra money.
00:34We want you to try some of ours here if you don't mind.
00:37What are you doing bringing that in my box?
00:39Is that live?
00:40That's right this very second.
00:42They coming up here.
00:44So he's right above us.
00:45They're here.
00:47Quiet.
00:50This is how we make the moonshine.
01:01You ready?
01:05Oh, there it goes.
01:07I mean, I got a full five gallons.
01:09All right, that's it, guys.
01:10Let's jug it up.
01:11In Jefferson County, Kentucky,
01:13after launching his first illegal operation
01:16in more than a decade,
01:18Tim ran afoul of a local shine boss.
01:20I've got a steel and mash.
01:22I want you guys to run the shine.
01:24Then we can work out some business here.
01:26You can call us home.
01:27That's how we do it here in Kentucky.
01:31Now, with his own deadline approaching,
01:34Tim needs to finish bottling 1,000 gallons
01:36of tariff-free liquor in time to meet the smuggler
01:39arriving by boat from Canada.
01:41Go slow.
01:42Don't spill it that way.
01:43After a couple of weeks, you know,
01:44we're finishing up like 1,000 gallons right here.
01:47I mean, it's the prettiest picture you've ever seen.
01:49We've done it, man.
01:51Yeah, I talked to the guy in Canada.
01:53In three days, our boat's going to come down to Ohio River.
01:57So we've got to meet this guy.
01:58on this boat.
02:00I heard from my buyer.
02:01He's got a boat that's coming down the Ohio River.
02:04Well, you know, this is kind of a roundabout way
02:05to get liquor to Canada, but it's the safest way.
02:08But, you know, right now, all I got to do is get it
02:10to this boat in three days.
02:12You know, this is tear-free, tax-free.
02:14So that means we're going to get trucks, trailers,
02:16whatever it is, load all this stuff up.
02:19Listen, somebody's coming.
02:22Huh?
02:24Dude, it is three vehicles side by side in the front.
02:28We're sitting here talking, and you hear side by sides,
02:32vehicles, everything that's not supposed to be there right
02:34now while we're here.
02:35It's the boys.
02:36This ain't cool, Tim.
02:37This is them.
02:40It's John popping in on check-offs.
02:42Oh, hell no.
02:47All right.
02:48What about it, fellas?
02:49Hey.
02:50Hey.
02:51How's it going?
02:53So what's going on?
02:55What y'all doing out riding around?
02:56Yeah, it's nice out today, man.
02:58Hey, look over here.
02:59Look.
03:00Yeah, we got some jobs over here.
03:03I knew you fellas was making moonshine.
03:05I didn't know you was making this much moonshine.
03:10It's actually impressive, honestly.
03:12Now I'm starting to get excited.
03:14Yeah.
03:14This is nice.
03:16You know, you've been running my electric.
03:18You know, I guess word got around.
03:20How much liquid we making in this bond?
03:21Right now, I'm feeling like I'm having a shakedown.
03:24Now the taxes are raised.
03:26So I'm thinking, looking here doing some Kentucky math for you,
03:30I'm thinking 100 gallons.
03:33But look, this is kind of designated for someone else.
03:36This is bought and paid for, fellas.
03:39Yeah, let's just call it like it is, man.
03:41We're going to take 100.
03:43That's the tax tonight.
03:44So let's round it up, boys.
03:46Let's load it up.
03:47Let's get our cut.
03:48This right here, this is impressive.
03:51High cost of living, fellas.
03:54Absolutely.
03:57What the heck are we supposed to do now?
03:58I don't know.
03:59I mean, in the legal business,
04:00everyone's taking a piece of the pie here.
04:02You got the distributors.
04:03You got the state.
04:04You got the federal.
04:05But on the illegal, you know, you're getting 100% of the profits
04:09here, but you have no protection.
04:10I mean, at this point, I don't know
04:12what set of problems is worse.
04:14We got 100 gallons that we got to get in three days.
04:17We don't have time to match in.
04:19We don't have the resources in Kentucky to help us.
04:21You know, right now, we're missing 100 gallons.
04:24The boat is coming in less than three days.
04:26What we're going to do, I think we call Henry Law.
04:30Henry Law back in Franklin County, Virginia.
04:32If he's got it, I'm for sure I can get it.
04:35Hey, man, how you doing?
04:37We got a little dilemma with another group of people
04:40out here.
04:41So we're short.
04:42We're short about 100 gallons.
04:45Oh, hell, man.
04:46100 gallons, you know, that's a whole lot.
04:48I got some, but I'll have to ask around and see if I can come up
04:52the rest of it for you.
04:53Oh, yeah?
04:54And of course, you got to come out here to Virginia
04:56to pick it up if I come up with it.
04:59We'll be on the way.
05:01All right, see you a little bit later.
05:02OK.
05:02Hey, you know, right now, I got 100 gallons short.
05:05I just got to go right now.
05:06And I hope that Henry comes through.
05:08Let's shut this operation down and get the hell out of here,
05:10bud.
05:10All right.
05:10Oh, my god.
05:18I've been working really hard to get things going back here
05:21in North Carolina.
05:22I got to rock and roll.
05:23Last thing I'm going to do is just sit and idle.
05:25That ain't happening.
05:27In Polk County, North Carolina, with a profitable run
05:30of moonshine under his belt, Josh sets out
05:33to secure some grain for his next run
05:36from a trusted black market supplier whose name also
05:39happens to be Josh.
05:41My buddy Josh up at the mall house,
05:43he called me today and told me I needed to come running up here.
05:46He had something I might be interested in.
05:48Digger told me don't be talking about nothing over the phone.
05:51So we're on our way to Asheville to see exactly
05:53what he's got in store.
05:54Every time I've ever done business with Josh,
05:56it's been in a parking lot or a back alley or something other.
05:59All right, I believe we're here.
06:01He assures me that there's nobody else there
06:04and that it's OK.
06:05Call Josh and let him know I'm here.
06:11Think we're all right.
06:15Hey, Josh.
06:17Hey, we're sitting out here.
06:18What do you want me to do?
06:20All right, right on.
06:25There he is.
06:25There he is, right there.
06:30What's going on, buddy?
06:31How's Josh been?
06:33I've been all right.
06:33How's this Josh been?
06:34Yeah, hell, I'm all right, man.
06:36So I meet up with Josh.
06:38Yeah, he's always got the best grains ever.
06:40What you got cooking today?
06:41Let me show you.
06:42I'm expecting some kind of amazing grain hookup.
06:46What do you think about that?
06:48A bag of peanuts?
06:50Yeah.
06:54I thought I was coming up here for grains, man.
06:57I've heard it's possible to make moonshine out of peanuts.
07:00But that's something I ain't never even put my hands in.
07:02How much of this you got?
07:04250 pounds.
07:05But when free ingredients fall on your lap,
07:07you've got to take advantage of it.
07:09How much do you have, 250 pounds?
07:11250, but it's all raw.
07:12It's all raw.
07:13So you're telling me I've got to figure out
07:15how to roast peanuts because you can't consume raw peanuts.
07:18And they probably wouldn't make good whiskey if they were.
07:21So what do you want for them?
07:24Man, if I just get a couple gallons back, that'd be great.
07:26I think we can definitely pull that off.
07:28Just pull the truck over here.
07:30Sounds good.
07:30All right, bud.
07:32This is going to be a total new process for me
07:34trying to make some peanut liquor.
07:35I know I'm going to have to roast them
07:37to bring out all that flavor.
07:38The problem is that peanuts are high in fat and protein,
07:40and they have almost no fermentable sugars.
07:42So I got some things I'm going to have to figure out
07:44before we mash in.
07:45Now the work begins.
07:47I've got to figure out how to make the mash.
07:49Then I've got to make the liquor.
07:51You know what I'm going to call Henry.
07:53Whenever I get in a jam, Henry's one of the first people
07:56that I call.
07:57Right now, I'm still recovering from my accident.
07:59I need all the help I can get.
08:05Oh.
08:06I know I'm ready to get old Junior took care of one more time.
08:09Yeah, that's for a fact, Jack.
08:11In Haywood County, North Carolina,
08:13after developing a multi-step process for rapidly aging liquor
08:17in their column still, Mike and Jerry prepare to run another $200
08:22a gallon batch for their bootlegger, who they've hoodwanked
08:25into believing is two-year-old barrel-aged whiskey.
08:29Is this old stuff ready?
08:30I hope he keeps on wanting to oil her up.
08:35Good?
08:36She's good and bitter.
08:37You ready to pump her over?
08:38I'm ready, man.
08:39We didn't get the tailgate shut good.
08:41Junior's already ordered another batch from us.
08:43Clear to it.
08:44So that tells me what we just loaded up.
08:46$3,000 worth of alcohol is already sold.
08:49Me and Jerry's got to turn in and get another load here in a week.
08:52Fire in the hole.
08:53Go ahead.
08:56I'm going to grab these chips.
08:58The way we're doing this process to make a rapid-aged whiskey,
09:00we're using an American white oak chip that's been charred,
09:04and as it runs through the steel,
09:06it comes out with that deep color and that wonderful taste.
09:09I'm going to tell you what.
09:10I've been thinking about something.
09:11What's that?
09:12You know, remember Junior telling us
09:14that he'd buy as much as we could produce,
09:16as much as we could get him?
09:17Heck yeah.
09:18Isn't that kind of alarming to you, though?
09:20Yeah, it's a little bit suspicious.
09:22If Junior was buying from us and putting boots on the ground,
09:25trying to sell one jar at a time to people,
09:27or, you know, a gallon here and a gallon there,
09:29he wouldn't be placing an order this soon.
09:31He's got it sold before he ever leaves the place
09:34that he loads it up.
09:35There's something fishy going on.
09:37You know, $200 a gallon he's buying from us,
09:40that's good money to us, you know?
09:41Oh, that's great money.
09:42I wonder what he's getting for it.
09:45I don't know, but I'd like to.
09:48Selling the bootleggers keeps us safe,
09:50but, you know, they take a big cut of our profit
09:52out of our pocket.
09:54That's mine and Jerry's liquor.
09:55You know what I mean?
09:57Well, go ahead and crack that valve in.
09:59Oh, look at that.
10:01Look how pretty that is.
10:02Dark goodness.
10:04Boy, that's what I like to see right there.
10:06You know, the whole game of the bootleggers
10:08is to buy low and sell high.
10:09And, you know, the only reason we use the bootleggers
10:11is to move this stuff.
10:12If we can find somebody to move it ourselves,
10:14you know, why wouldn't we?
10:15There she flies.
10:17Well, let's get us a taste and see what she's like, Jerry.
10:21All right, there we go.
10:26Whew, that tastes just like the first one, buddy.
10:29I mean, this stuff tastes like it's been in a barrel
10:31for a couple years, and perhaps, you know,
10:34as far as just good, smooth tasting alcohol, whiskey,
10:37this is possibly the best that me and Jerry
10:39has ever put on the table.
10:41As good as that is, and as hot as it's selling,
10:44leads me back to this whole middleman thing.
10:46I'm telling you.
10:47I'm thinking we're going to have to figure out
10:48where Junior's taking this stuff.
10:50We need to take this to Junior,
10:52deliver it like we said we would.
10:54Get our money for it.
10:55Get our money for it.
10:56And I think we need to slide in behind old Junior.
10:59Find out where he's taking it.
11:01Me and Jerry can find out who Junior's selling to directly.
11:04Maybe we can go to that man and cut a deal with him personally.
11:07You know, and cut the middleman out.
11:09There's nothing personal here.
11:10It's just business.
11:11We'll follow him.
11:12We'll be very cautious.
11:14And we'll get that extra money
11:15and put it in our pocket.
11:17I'm down with it.
11:18Let's do it.
11:27Howard, look.
11:28If Henry don't have this moonshine,
11:30we're going to have some bigger problems.
11:32I know.
11:33Because we're supposed to deliver.
11:34And I always deliver.
11:35My word is good as gold.
11:36You know, right now, I only got a couple of days
11:39to deliver 1,000 gallons to a boat that's
11:41going to smuggle it in the county.
11:43The big problem we got here, the big shine boss in Kentucky,
11:46you know, he just stole 100 gallons from us for rent.
11:48I'm going to head over to Virginia,
11:50meet up with Henry Law, and hopefully, you know,
11:53he's going to score, and he's going to found 100 gallons for us.
11:56I just hope he's got it and don't have to, like,
11:59be going to get it or find it or make it.
12:03You know what I'm saying?
12:03I don't know.
12:04No, we need to pull up, load up, and get the hell
12:07back on the road to Kentucky.
12:08Because I know how Henry is.
12:09Sometimes he's got it, like, stashed to, you know,
12:12different places, you know?
12:13And I don't want to be driving all over the country.
12:15You know, if Henry doesn't have 100 gallons,
12:18you know, we're in trouble.
12:19I mean, we're really in trouble.
12:20Because I have run out of time.
12:22The boat is going to arrive in, like, the next day.
12:24We've got to have this 100 gallons.
12:26I need some moonshine, Henry.
12:28Well, you know what, you're awful short notice, man.
12:30I mean, dang, you're going to give me
12:31all any time to get anything.
12:33I give you, like, 10 hours?
12:3510 hours.
12:36For us to get here.
12:38He's been on the road for, what, two days?
12:40Two days.
12:40Yeah.
12:4110 hours there.
12:41I think it was a little shorter than 10 hours.
12:44I mean, I need this stuff bad.
12:49Is that what you was wanting?
12:51Oh, my god.
12:52Henry, what are you doing to us, man?
12:54You know we're already there.
12:55You're messing with me, man.
12:56I had to taunt you a little bit, man.
12:57I had to make you a little nervous though.
12:59We one got away from a heart attack here.
13:00Man, we drove 500 miles without eating or anything.
13:03Check that out.
13:04Ooh.
13:05Think you're going to be happy with that.
13:06We had to go call in some favors for some buddies
13:08of ours that have been found.
13:10But we got hit, what, an hour ago?
13:13That'll work.
13:13Look, let's put it in the truck, Henry,
13:15and stop playing around, man.
13:16Well, you know, when that tarp comes out
13:18and there's 100 gallons sitting there, I mean, I'm happy now.
13:21Let's just put it up in there, man.
13:23Watch that, Howard.
13:24Come on, now.
13:25Stop playing around, man.
13:27Now all I got to do is concentrate
13:29on getting back to Kentucky.
13:30So y'all not headed back to Kentucky at night, are you?
13:33Yeah.
13:33Holy crap.
13:33We got to get gas and we got to go.
13:35All this stuff's got to get loaded and ready to go on a boat.
13:38A boat?
13:39You ever heard of a boat load?
13:40Yeah, I have.
13:41Well, this is a boat load.
13:42You know what I'm saying?
13:43We got 100 gallons.
13:45But now, you know, we got 500 miles to go.
13:47I mean, 500 miles and different state lines,
13:50you know, different laws, a lot of things can happen.
13:52Now, how much I owe you right now?
13:54We won't worry about that right now.
13:55When times change, man, 20, 30 years pass by,
13:57your dad, my dad, me, you, you know how it goes.
14:00When you call me, I'm ready to roll.
14:03Well, you know, I'm going to be there for you.
14:04You know, this is what moonshiners do for each other.
14:06It's a brotherhood, any way you add it up.
14:09Once Tim's loaded up, I got to help another moonshiner in need.
14:12Josh has got a problem he needs help with down in North Carolina.
14:16All right, bud, thank y'all so much.
14:17All right, now.
14:18Well, you know, right now is where the risk comes in.
14:20One thing is putting 100 gallons of moonshine in the back of a truck
14:23and transporting it, but now taking 1,000 gallons
14:26and putting it onto a base.
14:28That's something I've never did before.
14:30All right.
14:30That's the first step of this ride right here.
14:32So we've got to be law-abiding citizen.
14:34I'm just glad that we got it.
14:35I can't believe he does this like that.
14:37What the hell?
14:42Man, we just got 250 pounds of peanuts.
14:45These peanuts are raw, so we're going to have to roast them.
14:49What I'm thinking is to make like a rotisserie,
14:52like a tumbler.
14:53I'm going to scrounge up some parts and pieces
14:55and build a roaster.
14:56Building a roaster is the easy part.
14:58Figuring out how to ferment these things,
15:00that's going to be the job.
15:02But first things are first.
15:03I got to get home, get all my supplies together,
15:05and get to building.
15:06Considering we're going to be messing with peanuts,
15:08this is a stainless barrel, so this will probably work right here.
15:13Got a lot of scraps from a lot of different projects.
15:15We ran around my property and grabbed just about every doggone
15:19piece of metal we could find.
15:20This might work for a frame right here, maybe.
15:22Now that I got the stainless barrel and all the metal,
15:25now we're going over to shop, hopefully get this thing done.
15:29All right.
15:30So now I got to get these things in the middle of this
15:34and fairly straight up and down.
15:37Now I got to put the arms on it that's going to hold my 50-gallon
15:40drum up in the air.
15:41Run the stainless rod through it, weld it together, and man,
15:45we're on our way to having a peanut roaster.
15:48Gorilla weld, ugly but strong.
15:50Now that we got all that together,
15:52now we've got to drill some holes in the barrel,
15:54and then we can run a shaft through and put it all in place.
15:59Looks like the price is right.
16:01The very last thing I got to do to it,
16:03this thing's got to have some kind of vents in it.
16:06Ooh, it's hot.
16:07We're roasting peanuts if it's completely sealed
16:09and it can't breathe, hell, it's going to blow up.
16:12Shine time.
16:13We got us a roaster.
16:15Now it's time to roast some damn peanuts.
16:20There should be enough rocks.
16:22We've got to get this thing set up and get this fire lit.
16:31Who in the world is this?
16:35What?
16:36You told me you wasn't coming.
16:38I know it.
16:40Oh, man.
16:40You jerked my team.
16:42Well, we've got things taken care of at home.
16:44You know, I know I told you I couldn't come down.
16:45So now we're here.
16:46So put us to work, man.
16:48One thing about Henry, when he shows up,
16:50there may be a little fist bump and a hay,
16:52but it's like, let's get to work.
16:53What are we doing, son?
16:54We've got to get her done.
16:55All right, so what's step one?
16:56What do we got to do first?
16:57Well, I never operated this thing myself,
17:00but I'd say first thing to do is probably
17:02put the peanuts in there and then start building a fire
17:05and then put it all back together and start roasting.
17:07Yeah, well, you know, peanuts aren't nuts.
17:09They're legumes.
17:10What the heck is a legume?
17:12A legume or a legume?
17:14Legume.
17:15Legume.
17:15Yeah, yeah, it's like a beam.
17:17I mean, everybody knows that.
17:18What?
17:19OK, well, let's roast these beans.
17:21All right, let's do it.
17:21All right, then.
17:22The first thing we got to do is put some peanuts in here
17:25and start getting them roasted.
17:26If I was back home roasting some peanuts,
17:28be in a pan and an oven for like 30 minutes.
17:32Hell yeah, I'm ready to go.
17:33We're using a lot more heat than that
17:35and roasting a lot more peanuts.
17:38Oh, I can hear them.
17:39Do you hear that?
17:39Do you hear it dump them?
17:40So we're going to do it for like 15 minutes
17:42and then check them.
17:49All right.
17:50Yes, I can't get burned.
17:52Good gosh, it smells good.
17:53I'll tell you that much.
17:56You can tell by the sound of that.
17:58Yeah, and then no burnt spots.
18:01See how hard that easily they're cracking?
18:03Look at that.
18:04They are perfect.
18:04They roasted.
18:06Look at that.
18:07I mean, is that not going to do exactly what we want?
18:09After 15 minutes, we pull the peanut roaster off
18:12and check them, and the peanuts are roasted perfectly.
18:14We're going to keep on rocking and get all this done.
18:16That's all of them in it, Josh.
18:18Yeah, that's every bit of it.
18:19So how are we going to smash them?
18:21You told you I had something up my sleeve.
18:22I'll be right back.
18:23Now we've got all these peanuts roasted and they're laid out
18:25even on this plywood, now we've got to crush them.
18:28And boy, oh, boy, do I got an idea.
18:34Hot dog, it's shot time now.
18:38I'm known for being wide open, and with 200 pounds of peanuts
18:41to crush, I can only think of one way to do it.
18:44And I've got 10,500 pounds that says it's going to crush
18:47the down of it.
18:49It is working.
18:53Are they busting, Henry?
18:55Look at that good.
18:56Oh, yeah.
18:57Oh, yeah.
18:57They busted up good.
19:00Josh, you know, these peanuts look good,
19:02but we've got to add something else to it.
19:04The problem with these here peanuts is they don't have
19:06any sugars to work off.
19:07It's all fat and proteins.
19:09I guess we could extract the oils out of it,
19:11do some sort of infusion, but that's not
19:14the way I want to go.
19:14Instead, I'm going to add the peanuts right to the mash,
19:16and it's going to make more of a peanut butter flavor.
19:18But we want it to taste like peanuts,
19:20and we want it to break down.
19:22We're going to have to add something to the mash
19:24to make it work off.
19:26Peanut butter and honey is pretty good.
19:28Peanut butter and honey is pretty good.
19:29Honey is expensive, isn't it?
19:30Honey is so expensive, though, by the time you get done
19:33messing with it, you've got so much money in the liquor,
19:35it's just...
19:36Man, we've got peanut butter and jelly,
19:37just like the sandwich.
19:40What about peanut butter and bananas?
19:43I loved nothing more when I was a kid
19:45than peanut butter and bananas.
19:47What would go better than that?
19:49Peanut butter and bananas.
19:50What about bananas?
19:51I like that.
19:52Bananas are going to be perfect to go in here
19:54because, first of all, they complement peanuts very well.
19:57Second of all, they've got a lot of sugar in them,
20:00and I think people are going to go crazy for it.
20:02Sounds pretty good to me.
20:03Right?
20:03Henry, let's get all this load up.
20:05We'll go find some bananas tomorrow.
20:06We'll get mashed in, and we'll make some shine.
20:08I hate big guy.
20:09Sounds good.
20:16You know, I kind of hate to have to do this,
20:18though, Junior, man.
20:19I've grown to have a little soft spot for him,
20:22but, you know, with him ordering the way he's ordering,
20:25he's not selling to a whole bunch of people.
20:27He's not putting boots on the ground
20:28selling one jar at a time.
20:29You know, you don't sell that kind of quantity
20:31in one week's time.
20:32No, you don't.
20:33No, he's making good money on the other end.
20:35Yeah, he's making way more money than $200 a gallon on it.
20:38So if we can find out who it is and cut them a better deal,
20:41we can make more money, I mean, we're idiots for not.
20:45So we got another 15 gallons ready for Junior.
20:48He don't know that it's possibly his last time.
20:50We're fixing to follow him out and see where he's going.
20:54What's up, man?
20:55Got me another load?
20:56Yes, sir.
20:57Here we are.
20:57We're here, man.
20:58We're ready to go for you.
20:59Exactly.
21:00We got exactly what you asked for, the same stuff.
21:03Reach in there and get you a sample.
21:04Another 15 gallons.
21:13What do you think about that?
21:15That's it.
21:16Get you loaded on up.
21:17Yeah.
21:18What do you think about that?
21:19This stuff is selling.
21:23I mean, it's selling.
21:24Is it getting gone?
21:25It's getting gone, and it's getting gone quick.
21:28That's what we like to hear.
21:29I guess that's a good thing, ain't it?
21:30It's a good thing.
21:31Help my pocket, help your pocket.
21:33We're talking to Junior.
21:34He's telling us good news.
21:36He said people is loving this stuff.
21:38He's just singing music to mine and Jerry's ears.
21:41I'm glad that everybody's liking it.
21:42I truly am.
21:43But I can't wait to see who he's selling it to.
21:45Appreciate your business.
21:46Thank you, buddy.
21:47Appreciate you guys.
21:48Take care of yourself.
21:48I'll see you.
21:49See you in a week.
21:50All right.
21:51Maybe sooner than that.
21:52You never know.
21:57Old Junior don't know it, but this may be the last time
22:00he meets with us.
22:02If we can follow in on him and find out who he's selling to,
22:06we've made our last deal with old Junior.
22:10I kind of feel sorry for him in a way, Jerry.
22:13But not really.
22:14Not really.
22:16I think I like the money better.
22:19You know, Paul Junior, he just don't know it yet,
22:21but his gravy train's vowed to run dry.
22:35All right.
22:37We're here now.
22:39Oh, yeah.
22:39It looks like you've been working a whole lot since we've been gone.
22:41I have been, buddy.
22:43Wow.
22:43Last time Henry and Paige were here, there was an underground
22:45still site here, but it wasn't like what it is now.
22:48This deer stand is the perfect thing to hide this.
22:50The chimney comes out the roof.
22:52I got cameras up and down the trail.
22:55You got that owl up there that keep all the birds away.
22:57That wise owl right there knows everything.
22:59I've got us on video standing here talking about it right now.
23:03I get messages sent to my phone.
23:05If you've got those cameras, we should be good to go.
23:07You know what I mean?
23:08Yeah.
23:08But you know what?
23:09We need to get mashed in.
23:10All right.
23:11We've got these nanners we've got to carry down there.
23:13Now we've got a ton of bananas and all the peanuts are crushed.
23:16Now it's time for us to be mashing in.
23:17All right, Henro.
23:18All right, buddy.
23:19You know what we need now, don't you?
23:21We need water.
23:21Yeah, hot water.
23:22We've got all this stuff underground, ready to rock and roll.
23:24First thing we've got to do is get this water heated up.
23:29Yeah, baby.
23:30We're rolling now.
23:31So we're going to get some of that water in that steel,
23:33throw that propane to it, get that boiling,
23:36and then we'll be ready to mash in.
23:38I guess we're going to be busting some nanners now.
23:41Man, it is on.
23:42We're about to have some peanut butter,
23:45banana moonshine, and ain't nobody else going to have it.
23:48My main concern is with any mash beer list, if it'll turn out.
23:52You know, Josh, you can come over that peanut butter banana idea.
23:54This is all new to me.
23:55I've never used peanuts before.
23:57When we run this stuff, that's going to tell the tale.
23:59So we've got to wait and see.
24:00That's about all the bananas there, ain't it?
24:02Let's get the peanuts.
24:03I think you had a good idea of putting the shells in there.
24:05I think by putting it all in there,
24:07we're going to be able to pull out the most flavor out of it like that.
24:09That's what we want.
24:10We want to be able to get all the full flavor out of all these peanuts.
24:13So we're smashing them up.
24:14We're going to put the whole shell, peanut, everything in there.
24:17Hot dog, man.
24:18That smells good.
24:19Golly, all I can smell is peanut.
24:22It better be.
24:24You know what peanut butter and banana reminds me of?
24:27What's that?
24:28Daycare.
24:29You've been in no daycare.
24:30Yes, I have.
24:31I eat a lot of peanut butter and banana sandwiches at daycare.
24:35You felt like me.
24:36You were born in prison.
24:37Well, that's been kind of a wild life now that you mention it.
24:41Now we've basically got everything done.
24:43We've got our hot water in there.
24:45We've got our peanuts.
24:46We've got our bananas in there.
24:48Some wheat bran.
24:49Trade from the fields, Virginia.
24:50Hard to beat that wheat.
24:51That's good stuff.
24:52Dump some yeast to it.
24:54Wait on this mash to get done.
24:55When it's ready, we'll come back and make some peanut butter, banana moonshine.
24:59I'm damned excited.
25:01Yeah, baby.
25:02All right, boys.
25:03We're mashed in.
25:04Let's go home and get some fiddles.
25:06Some pulled a drink.
25:07Hey, I'm down with that.
25:16Don't get too close to him.
25:19I ain't getting too close to him.
25:21I'm trying to keep him inside it to get in the dark.
25:24Yeah, you know, he's got a pretty distinct vehicle Junior does.
25:27We're going to follow him from very far.
25:29We don't want him to know we're nowhere in sight.
25:31We're just going to keep his tail lights in the distance.
25:33Damn, Joe, where he's taking us to?
25:36Well, where he's going, we're following.
25:38There ain't no doubt.
25:43There he goes going under that bridge.
25:46He's where he's going to be because look how slow he's going.
25:49What is that going in there?
25:50Oh, it's going up.
25:51There's motorcycles and stuff.
25:52You know, me and Jerry, we don't want to blow our cover at all.
25:54We're just going to pull off to the side and kind of peep and tom through the bushes.
25:59You ready?
26:01Let's go.
26:14Looks like he's unloading that load, don't you?
26:16Yeah, there's the guy we need to talk to.
26:19You know, me and Jerry needs to be making this extra money.
26:21I mean, my goodness.
26:22That could be me and Jerry pulling up, giving this man a sip of our liquor.
26:25There goes Junior.
26:26He's starting to head out.
26:30So what do you want to do?
26:31You want to go in now?
26:32I'm ready.
26:33I mean, look, the man's there.
26:35He just unloaded the liquor.
26:36I said, we're going there right now to talk to him, try to make a deal with him.
26:39I'll tell you what.
26:40I got that little old camera in the truck.
26:41I'm going to stick it in my pocket real quick.
26:43Yeah.
26:43Let's get in there.
26:44Let's do it.
26:44I don't know exactly what this place is or what all the people's are doing here.
26:49But Junior's here.
26:51There's no advertisement nowhere.
26:53There's no welcome sign, that's for sure.
26:55And don't look like they're inviting nobody to come on in.
27:03Howdy, sir.
27:04Hey.
27:05Hey.
27:06Where did this come from?
27:09We know old Junior.
27:11You know who that is?
27:13No.
27:13It's one or more, man.
27:14OK.
27:16Yeah.
27:17What do you got there?
27:19There's no Junior.
27:20Junior?
27:21How do you know Junior?
27:21Come here.
27:22He's a friend of ours.
27:23All right.
27:25Love you.
27:26Thank you, bud.
27:26Nice seeing you cheating.
27:27Nice seeing you cheating.
27:28Nice seeing you.
27:30Nice seeing you.
27:31Nice seeing you.
27:31What can I get you guys?
27:37Well, what you got back here, Fox?
27:38I got about everything you could ever want.
27:40What do you want, man?
27:42What kind of good age whiskey you might have?
27:44Good old backwoods stuff.
27:46Yeah, I got some of it.
27:47You know what I'm talking about?
27:48You know what we're talking about?
27:49Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
27:50Let's see what I can feel.
27:55That's kind of my good old whiskey.
28:01I appreciate it.
28:06Oh, my goodness.
28:08Yeah, we're buying a shot of this whiskey from the bartender.
28:10You know what that is, don't you?
28:11I know exactly what that is.
28:13We'll take a little sip of it.
28:14There's no question about it.
28:16It's ours.
28:17That's pretty good stuff right there you got.
28:20Well, thank you.
28:21Where are you getting that from?
28:23I never tell anybody where I'm getting the
28:24from.
28:25Oh, well, we don't blame you.
28:27No, we understand that totally.
28:29I'll tell you what.
28:30Tell me what.
28:32Since you were so generous in letting us try your stuff,
28:35we want you to try some of ours here if you don't find it.
28:42What are you doing bringing this from my bar?
28:56We want you to taste it.
28:58You know, me and Jerry's spending all this time trying to rapid age this whiskey, and we're
29:02selling it to Junior and he's just taking it down the road.
29:04Come on, man.
29:05This has got to come to an end.
29:07What is it?
29:09Age of wisdom.
29:10How old?
29:12You tell us.
29:13You tell us how old it is.
29:15What you think about that?
29:16It's good stuff as well.
29:24Where are you getting it?
29:27Maybe we're going to take this conversation outside.
29:29How about it?
29:32Tony, watch the bar for me, would you?
29:36Soon as he takes a sip of this whiskey out of this flask, he knew why we were there.
29:40So I'm thinking this guy, he's ready to make a deal.
29:42He's wanting to talk outside.
29:44You know, obviously, we know that Junior's stopping by here and unloading liquor.
29:48I figured that maybe if we could talk with you, we might can make a deal with you.
29:52I mean, what do you think, you know, would be fair to you?
29:56Well, you got to beat 300.
29:59Can you beat 300?
30:01I think, I mean, I think me and Jerry would be comfortable with around 275 a gallon.
30:07Yeah, but you know, I got overhead.
30:08I got all this .
30:11How about 250?
30:13I mean, we're not far off, are we, Bubba?
30:16No, we're not far off.
30:17I'll tell you what.
30:19It ain't too far over here, and we're the source.
30:22If you can do 260 a gallon, I think we can be good.
30:26Is that fair enough?
30:27See, I don't know you boys.
30:29I ain't gonna give you a bunch of money and then not see you again, okay?
30:33Sure.
30:33You're gonna have to give it to me on consignment.
30:36You bring me the liquid, and I'll pay you when I sell it.
30:40Consignment.
30:42Okay?
30:43Hey, I think we can do that.
30:44We've made a deal on a gallon per gallon.
30:46We'll get you a load over here, and you ain't gotta pay us a dime until you sell it.
30:50You got a deal.
30:51You know, we're selling the best liquor we've ever made at the highest price we've ever made.
30:57And nobody else is making this liquor out there.
30:59So me and Jerry, we feel like we're the kingpins of moonshine right now.
31:05It's like we got us a deal, don't we?
31:06Hell yeah.
31:07Yeah.
31:07Yeah.
31:15So what, y'all think this stuff's gonna be ready?
31:17Man, it should be.
31:18I hope so.
31:18Me too.
31:19It's been a number of days.
31:20I guarantee that master's ready to run.
31:22We're going to the steel side to get to work.
31:24All right.
31:25Let's see what we got.
31:32This barrel here don't seem like it's doing much.
31:34Listen, hold, listen.
31:35I don't hear nothing.
31:38I don't need anything sizzling, either.
31:40It still tastes sweet.
31:45Ain't worth it, is it?
31:47It ain't done, man.
31:49It's just, it's still sweet.
31:50No bitter.
31:51No bitter at all.
31:52It's sweet.
31:52I've been making moonshine for years.
31:54And normally, I don't have problems with my mash working off.
31:57For some reason, it looks like our yeast is stalled out.
32:00Never made anything out of peanuts before.
32:02I don't know what the heck is happening.
32:04What about, are you sure you got these things?
32:06You know, could possibly be any salt in them?
32:08Who'd you get them off of?
32:09They were raw.
32:10They were, they were raw.
32:12Maybe we're the processing plant.
32:14They have to clean the machine.
32:15You gotta make sure if whatever they ground before that,
32:18didn't have sodium in it.
32:19I even tasted them, like, before I started with them.
32:21And I didn't taste any salt on them,
32:23so that don't make no sense.
32:24All right, what else could make it not work?
32:26Maybe the yeast wasn't no good.
32:27All right, well, maybe something else.
32:29I've never used nuts before.
32:30Something's wrong.
32:31You can't just let all this mash go to waste.
32:33Even though the peanuts were free,
32:34we still got a lot of time and effort into it.
32:36We've got to give this one more shot.
32:43I got some in the truck.
32:44I'll go get it.
32:45Cool, good deal.
32:46All right.
32:47The rest of these peanuts off.
32:56Come here, Henry.
32:57Henry, come here.
33:02Is that live?
33:03Let's right this very second.
33:05Is that our road?
33:06They coming up here.
33:08Can we tell who it is?
33:09It looks like a regular truck.
33:12They coming around that curve right there right now.
33:17I see one, two, three of them.
33:20There's three of them, three of them.
33:21They're coming right up the path, too, man.
33:22Coming right up.
33:23So he's right above us.
33:26They're here.
33:27They're here.
33:29Let me see what you can.
33:30Hold it.
33:31That's a survey.
33:33So what's going to happen when he sees the truck?
33:36That's a good question.
33:37We'll find out later right now.
33:39We need to keep quiet.
33:40Maybe he'll leave.
33:41He's putting a stake in right there.
33:43I'll see it.
33:44Hey, look, look, look, look, look.
33:45Henry's driving up another one.
33:47Be quiet.
33:48No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
34:03We're back in the air for a while.
34:04We're back in the air for a while.
34:05Oh, my God.
34:09Shh, shh, shh.
34:24I see them here.
34:27I think they're leaving.
34:35They're going out.
34:38They're out of here, bro. Thank God.
34:42You know what, Josh? I think we need to watch it.
34:44Let's cover this thing over.
34:46What seemed like forever, they finally left.
34:49Right now, it's too risky to be in a still site.
34:52But we're gonna keep our eyes on the cameras,
34:54and when we feel like the coast is clear,
34:56we're gonna come back and try to fix our mash.
34:58I'm ready for a cold drink.
35:07Well, Howard, this is the place, man.
35:10Where in the world you got us going, Tim?
35:12Yeah, it's a marina.
35:15Out of here?
35:16Yeah, behind these condos.
35:18Right now, the day has come.
35:21Finally, we're gonna get this thousand guys
35:22out of this trailer, get it on this boat,
35:24get it in route to get these guys going to Canada,
35:27and I'm gonna get my $20,000.
35:30I don't know about this situation.
35:32I mean, this is like going to the water,
35:34but it's like the wrong neighborhood for us to be in.
35:39I mean, I'm following the GPS, you know.
35:41It's taking me to these fancy houses,
35:43not really what I'm expecting.
35:44We're on a high-end neighborhood.
35:46I mean, we get caught with this thousand guys of moonshine.
35:49It's not like we can run off into the woods.
35:51We're kind of trapped.
35:53Ain't nobody's home, it looks like, in this place.
36:01You sure this is the place?
36:03I don't know nothing, Howard.
36:05All I know is this what he told me to come to.
36:07I don't know if it's that house or this house.
36:10I mean, I'm standing in somebody's driveway,
36:12you know, looking out between houses,
36:14and I'm seeing the Ohio River.
36:15I see some boats out there, but there's no sign of my contact.
36:19I don't know what to do right now.
36:30Mike, I'm not sure how much fuel you're going to drag us,
36:32but this pot's still empty.
36:33I know, man.
36:34They've got to be ramps around here some daggum where.
36:37I'm, for one, it loves me some ramps.
36:39This time of the year, it's ramp season right now.
36:42So you're just going to pull that out of the ground and eat it?
36:44No, I'm going to dig them with my digger first.
36:46Ramps are like a cross between an onion and a garlic flavor.
36:50Their scientific name is wild leeks,
36:52and they grow wild here in the mountains in patches.
36:56You want to try one?
36:57Dude, I don't know about that.
36:58I ate you one of them.
36:59Whoo!
37:00I don't know how Jerry can grow up around the mountains here
37:03and have never dug a ramp and eat one.
37:06You know, I guess the only thing Jerry basically eats
37:09is mashed potatoes, meat, and sweet cakes.
37:13You know, that ain't half bad.
37:15It ain't bad, is it?
37:16No, not nowhere near as bad as those will be.
37:18You know, I think I've converted Jerry now to be a ramp digger.
37:21I'm going to catch him on his freaking knees everywhere we go now.
37:29This is what he told me is going to come right here.
37:31But I'm trying to figure out now which one of these boats is him.
37:35I see something across.
37:36Look, let me signal out there.
37:37Cut your light off.
37:40Yeah, move over there and make sure nobody coming up on us, Howard.
37:43I don't see nobody.
37:44This is not looking like a good situation right now.
37:47You know, I am sitting dead in the water right here.
37:49I'm looking for the boat.
37:50I got a thousand gallons of moonshine.
37:52I mean, I'm looking at prison time.
37:57There we go.
37:58Wait a minute.
37:58That's a light.
37:59Oh, yeah.
38:00OK.
38:00Well, we got to let him know where we are there.
38:02You know what I'm saying?
38:03Go out there, Howard.
38:04So he knows where that dock's at.
38:06Because we ain't got no lights here.
38:12John, is that you?
38:14Yeah.
38:14All right.
38:15Can't he get beside it?
38:17Can't come beside it with too much mud.
38:19Guess this ain't like the normal docking situation here.
38:24Keep coming.
38:25If he just get close enough where we can hand them to y'all,
38:27we just got to get it where we can get out of here.
38:31That's about all you got right there, buddy.
38:33How are we going to get the moonshine on that?
38:35We're in a little bit of a challenging spot.
38:37We're going to have to hand these up, man.
38:38It's going to be tight.
38:39Normally, in the illegal business, I mean the Appalachian world,
38:42you know, out in the woods, on the creek somewhere,
38:44all right, let's get the judge.
38:46This delivery has got us in the middle of a neighborhood.
38:49Nowhere to go.
38:50Where are we going to go?
38:51We're on a dead end road, and we're between some big houses.
38:54Watch this step down right here too, Tim.
39:02It's a science to this right here, buddy.
39:06Howard, you doing all right?
39:07Yeah.
39:08I think we need more hands, boss.
39:11Howard, can you get on the boat and help?
39:13It's taking longer to get it up on the boat than me and DJ
39:16to get it off the trailer.
39:17I can get up on that boat somehow.
39:19I mean, I mean, I can scale it.
39:22I'm going to tell you, it sounded like a great idea on paper.
39:24When you put this plan in action, it isn't going.
39:27Get on the boat, Howard.
39:28I'm trying.
39:29Come on.
39:29I'm trying, buddy.
39:30Come on.
39:32All right.
39:32Let me get you in there.
39:33There you go.
39:34Oh, man.
39:36See, I told you you could get on that boat.
39:41Thank you for having me aboard.
39:44We got to roll.
39:45Wait a minute here now.
39:46All right.
39:47Maybe I'm going to get it to you.
39:48All right.
39:51Haul them back here, and then we'll start packing everywhere else.
39:56We got the top full.
39:57We got the back full.
39:58We're going to start bringing them inside now.
40:02This is the last truck, man.
40:04Oh, thank God.
40:05Last truck.
40:06That's what I was telling them.
40:07Last truck, and then you can jump off the boat.
40:10All right, now.
40:10This is it.
40:11Thank you, Jesus.
40:12John.
40:13Yes, sir.
40:14Give Howard the money, and then throw Howard off the boat.
40:17I mean, it's been 14 years, you know, since I returned back to the outlaw side.
40:21I do appreciate doing business with you, sir.
40:24I mean, you know, I mean, rewards are great, but I forgot how risky it can be.
40:29Fellas, next time we work together, I hope you have a ladder.
40:32Yeah, I mean, it's the dark side of this, you know.
40:34People can threaten you.
40:35They can burn down your property.
40:37You know, and you can't go to the law.
40:39All right, come on down, Howard.
40:40There you go.
40:41Come on, put your foot right here.
40:42Let go.
40:43Easy, easy.
40:43Right there, right there.
40:44There's your other foot.
40:45Grab my hand.
40:46I mean, you always got to look over your shoulder.
40:48You know, you can't let your guard down.
40:50But I just earned $40,000 tax-free, and I ain't about to give that up.
40:54Fellas, have a good one.
40:55Bye.
40:56All right, see y'all.
40:58Thank you, Mr. Henry.
41:00We are so .
41:00Everything I've built, gone.
41:03We out of here.
41:03Let's roll.
41:04Come on.
41:04Looks like we're on our way to Virginia.
41:07Hot dog.
41:08Ooh.
41:08That might leave a mark.
41:09We've got a really big order from the son of legendary stock car racer, Buddy Arrington.
41:16So what I'm gonna do is make us a big net.
41:19Hopefully these bears can't get to it.
41:21This is the moment of truth.
41:22Just don't kill me from above.
41:24Peaches is good.
41:25Blueberries is good.
41:26Why wouldn't they be good together?
41:27Digger and I, we can use a payday.
41:30You smell that?
41:31What in the hell?
41:32Sulfur dioxide.
41:33There may have cost us a whole run of damn liquor.
