00:00Good afternoon everyone, and welcome. I'm going to walk you through a detailed summary of Wednesday's Rule 5 draft events.
00:07My goal is to explain everything with complete accuracy, sticking strictly to the facts, statistics, names, and numbers as reported.
00:15I will be speaking directly to you, the viewer. Let's begin.
00:19If you are a right-handed pitcher, Wednesday's Rule 5 draft presented a remarkably high chance of your career taking a new turn.
00:25Out of the 13 players selected in the Major League phase, a staggering 12 were right-handed pitchers.
00:33The action started with the Colorado Rockies selecting R.J. Petit from the Detroit Tigers.
00:39This run on pitchers was interrupted only once, when the Minnesota Twins chose catcher Daniel Susak from the Oakland Athletics.
00:48The Twins later traded Susak to the San Francisco Giants.
00:51The AAA phase was also busy, with an additional 55 players changing organizations.
00:57In total, thus, there were 68 selections across both phases.
01:02This number is notably lower than the 83 total picks made in the previous year's draft.
01:06Now let's clarify the rules for eligibility in the Major League phase.
01:09Players are eligible if they sign their first professional contract at age 18 or younger in 2021,
01:15or at age 19 or older in 2022, and are not on a Major League team's 40-man roster.
01:22A club that selects a player in this phase must pay his former team a $100,000.
01:27A thousand daos.
01:29Crucially, some were cows and dao.
01:31The selecting team must keep that player on their active Major League roster for the entire following season.
01:37If they wish to send him to the minor leagues, he must first clear waivers.
01:41If he clears dao, he must then be offered back to his original team for $50,000, half of the original draft price.
01:50The rules are different for the AAA phase.
01:52It costs $24,000 to select a player there,
01:55and there are no roster restrictions on where that player can be placed for the 2025 season.
02:01Here is the complete list of the 13 picks from the Major League phase.

03:36A quick historical note, last year the White Sox used the top Rule 5 pick on Shane Smith,
03:41who stayed in their rotation all year and made the All-Star team.
03:45This year's top pick, RJ Petit, is headed for the Rockies' bullpen.
03:50Petit, a 14th-round pick in 2021, stands at 6'8 and 300 pounds.
03:55By, last season, he posted a 2.44 ERA and a 1.06 whip, striking out 79 batters in 66.1 innings.
04:04His arsenal includes a mid-90s fastball, an upper 80s change-up, and an 83-85 M-page slider
04:12that generates a lot of swings and misses.
04:15Rockies' professional scouting director Sterling Monfort described Petit as a gigantic force on the mound
04:20and praised his strike-throwing ability.
04:23He sees Petit as a bulk reliever who can pitch in the middle innings.
04:26The White Sox, hoping to repeat last year's success with Rule 5 pitchers,
04:30were the only team to make two major league phase selections.
04:33They took Jeddickson Paez and Alexander Alberto.
04:36General manager Chris Goetz noted that while neither has pitched at the upper levels yet,
04:40they have significant potential.
04:42He views Paez as a future starter and highlighted Alberto's big-time stuff,
04:46particularly his cutter.
04:48Siaffert, the Miami Marlins were the only team to lose two players in the major league phase,
04:53with Matt Puschard and Zach McCambly being selected.
04:56Marlins director of minor league operations Hector Crespo expressed pride in the organization's
05:01pitching depth and wished both players well.
05:05Dine, the only position player selected Daniel Susak,
05:08was also one of three selected players to be traded immediately after the draft.
05:13Oakland Athletics GM David Forst acknowledged the risk of leaving Susak unprotected,
05:18and said, he hopes the catcher takes advantage of his new opportunity.
05:24The most active team overall was the Washington Nationals.
05:27They selected Griff McGarry in the major league phase,
05:30and added six more players in the minor league phase.
