11 November - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Hello, very good day to you. If you've not already had some rain, chances are you will get some later on today.
00:05There's plenty of wet weather around, and if we look at the earlier satellite imagery,
00:10we can see there's a lot of cloud that's coming in from the southwest.
00:14Now, this is in association with an area of low pressure out in the Atlantic.
00:17Technically, this has been named Storm Claudia by the Spanish Met Service
00:21because it is going to bring some heavy thundery rain, large hail across parts of western Spain and Portugal.
00:27But for the UK, yes, it is going to bring some wet and windy weather, but we're not talking a storm.
00:34Notice the frontal structure that we have pushing in, so a warm front followed by a cold front.
00:39And in between, we have something called a warm sector, and that does what it says on the tin
00:44and will play a pivotal role in the temperatures that we're going to see through the next 24 hours or so.
00:49But we're also seeing plenty of rain with that frontal structure that's making its way in.
00:53So that warm front bringing plenty of wet weather across parts of northern England,
00:57Northern Ireland and Scotland as we go through today.
00:59Meanwhile, that cold front then pushes in across parts of Wales and southwest England.
01:04We do have a number of warnings in force, one for parts of southwest Scotland,
01:08another for much of northern Ireland, and then warnings for south Wales and also southwest England.
01:13Rainfall totals will be building up as we go through today and into tomorrow,
01:17and so some travel disruptions quite likely, also a bit of flooding in places too.
01:22And we need to factor in there will be some strong winds mixed in with the rain gales,
01:26maybe even a little bit stronger than that in exposed spots,
01:29so it is going to be wet and it is going to be windy too, for some of us.
01:32For the time being, as we go through large chunks of today,
01:36actually the far north of Scotland is staying largely fine,
01:38and central eastern England also largely dry,
01:41albeit one or two spots of rain can't be ruled out.
01:44Now, I mentioned that warm sector, where we're stuck in between that warm front and that cold front.
01:49Here, across much of the country, temperatures are well above average for the time of year,
01:54significantly so.
01:55We're looking at highs in the mid-teens, 15, 16 Celsius for some places,
02:00but worth noting, across the far north of Scotland, ahead of that warm front,
02:04well, it is going to be pretty cold here,
02:06temperatures markedly lower than across the rest of the UK.
02:10Then, as we go through this evening and overnight,
02:12like I said, you will see some rain if you haven't already,
02:15because that rain across Scotland pushes its way northwards,
02:18reaching the Northern Isles as we go through around midnight time.
02:22Meanwhile, the rain sweeps its way eastwards across England as well,
02:25and so most places will see a bit of wet weather at times,
02:28through the next 12, 18 hours or so.
02:32However, we do also get a drier, clearer slot across parts of Northern Ireland,
02:37Northern England and Central and Eastern Scotland as we go through the night,
02:42as that rain pushes northwards and also eastwards.
02:44And where we get the clear skies, temperatures could drop a little bit.
02:47We still have that slightly milder air around,
02:49and so as a result, we're only looking at rural spots getting into low single figures,
02:54towns and cities generally holding up in high single figures or low double digits.
02:58But actually, across the south, where we have that cloud and the rain and that even milder air,
03:02well, temperatures for some will stay around 13, 14 Celsius,
03:06a particularly mild start to the day on Wednesday,
03:09considering it is, what, early, mid-November at the moment?
03:13Yeah, it's mid-November, isn't it?
03:15Anyway, as we go through Wednesday itself,
03:17we end up with a situation where we have two zones of wet weather,
03:21one towards the north and one towards the south,
03:23and then something drier and brighter in between.
03:26And through the day, those two areas of wet weather,
03:29they're kind of sandwiched together, squeezing this dry, brighter zone
03:33and making it increasingly small.
03:35So whilst there will be a decent amount of fine weather
03:37across parts of northern England, southern Scotland, northern Ireland for a time,
03:41we are going to see rain spilling its way across again,
03:43parts of Wales and across the Midlands, having started off across the south,
03:47and somewhat weather pushing its way further south across parts of Scotland too.
03:52Now, as that rain across parts of England and Wales feeds its way further northwards,
03:55there will actually be something a bit drier, brighter developing towards the southeast.
03:59And with this mild warm air that we have across us at the moment,
04:02this is going to lead to temperatures rising again,
04:04a reasonable chance of 15, 16 Celsius towards the south and southeast,
04:08and so feeling pretty warm if you do get any of that sunshine.
04:12Elsewhere, temperatures are still above average for the time of year,
04:15but all the while, you know, if it's raining,
04:17if you have some strong gusty winds around,
04:19well, it's not going to feel particularly warm.
04:21And also across the far north of Scotland, we have northerly winds piling its way in here,
04:26and so a chilly feel for sure.
04:28As we go later on this week, and Thursday's a bit of a mixed bag,
04:32there will actually be some fine weather across some central parts,
04:35some decent dry sunny weather to be had.
04:37Meanwhile, a bit of rain across some northern areas,
04:40a bit of rain in the south, a bit of a mix.
04:42But as we go through Friday, that's when we sort of get a north-south divide.
04:46In the north, it's looking pretty cold, but often dry, though a few wintry showers,
04:51some sleet, some snow showers, quite likely, particularly over higher ground.
04:55Meanwhile, further south, a wetter picture on Friday,
04:58but with that, it's going to be mild, albeit some very strong wind,
05:01or some strong winds to watch out for as well.
05:04Of course, we'll have more details as to what we can expect through the end of the week,
05:08well, through this week, and as well as that,
05:11Aidan will be bringing you our deep dive this week.
05:13Make sure you check that out, he has some funky new graphics to show you.
05:16Bye-bye.
