19:54The influence of the many varieties of boxing which inspired its founding father when he created Viet Vo Dao is plain to see.
20:24As well as the choreographed battles used for demonstrations or gradings, Viet Vo Dao also features real competitive bouts.

22:35The motto is, be strong to be useful, and the first of the principles is to strive to reach the highest level in order to be able to serve one's fellow man.
22:47Practitioners must excel in every aspect of the art, whether it be hand-to-hand combat or the use of weapons.
22:53Weapons include sabres, halberds and fans, which were the weapon of the nobility.
22:58Practitioners must observe the code of conduct and place honour above all else.
23:11They must also live an honest, modest and noble life.
23:14John!
23:27A Viet Vodau practitioner must develop a will of steel in order to overcome difficulty and all the challenges life throws up.

24:44Here we begin!
24:57Hanoi is alive day and night.
25:08A constant flow of cars crisscrosses the city.
25:27Lining the roads are many little temporary betting booths where people can place bets.
25:38People stop there for a few moments before leaving with their chit.
25:57Vietnam's capital is divided into four districts, some old and some more modern.
26:10In the old town, certain districts or streets are entirely dedicated to a specific trade or business.
26:27As well as traditional shops, Hanoi also has a great number of street vendors and small trading booths,
26:44where many Vietnamese do their regular shopping.
26:47But in recent years, Hanoi has experienced a demographic boom,
26:54which is why many neighboring provinces have been subsumed by the metropolis.
27:24One of the most revered temples in Hanoi is the Literature Temple, founded in 1070.
27:45It's a Confucian temple in the west of Hanoi's old town.
27:51Many Vietnamese come to visit it, and it's the city's main tourist attraction.
27:58It's mainly frequented by school children and students.
28:03It's divided into five separate, walled courtyards,
28:08with its main alleyways reserved for noblemen and narrower alleys used by servants.
28:14The nobility used to send their children to study literacy here,
28:19so that they could be well-read and become civil servants.
28:22The children of the many dynasties came here to learn the teachings of Confucius.
28:27Traditionally, during the revision period before exams, the youngsters come here to revise,
28:42as this is believed to bring good luck.
29:00The great pavilion in the fourth courtyard houses the statue of Confucius,
29:04surrounded by his four closest disciples.
29:07This is the most sacred part of the temple, which explains why the students come here to revise and pray.
29:14Thanks to the French school of the Far East,
29:19the Literature Temple was restored several times during the 20th century.
29:23The 100,000 dong banknote features the image of one part of the temple,
29:30the well of heavenly clarity, which lies in the third courtyard.

30:53Everything in Hanoi happens on the back of a motorbike, even drinking beer and, of course, rice wine.
31:12So if you plan to visit Vietnam in the near future, be assured that beer will be part of the itinerary.
31:19The Vietnamese consider beer to be the perfect accompaniment to a meal.
31:23This may seem strange, but the Vietnamese like to drink their beer with a huge ice cube.
31:33Ice cellars also provide the wherewithal to cool down bike saddles heated by the burning sun.
31:53I'm sorry.
31:55I'm sorry.
31:56All right.
31:57It's like our mission.
31:58What's going on?
31:59It's like I've seen a mountain bike.

32:06Here's a beautiful mountain bike.
32:07Let's go.
32:08Oh, my God.
32:38Oh, my God.
33:08One of the ten principles of Vietvodau is that knowledge must be acquired dutifully
33:17and that the art should be passed on to the new generation.
33:22As in all sports, children begin their training with a warming-up session in order to reduce
33:27the risk of injury.
33:57Even the very youngest children can learn Vietvodau from the age of three.
34:17Many Vietnamese parents enroll their children into classes.
34:23Learning a martial art, particularly Vietvodau, helps to instill a sense of sportsmanship and
34:28respect for the rules, so the children can develop their sense of team spirit and cooperation.
34:33Vietvodau is a very important part of the tradition.
35:03skills and channel their energy.
35:07From their very earliest years, they learned the different moves of Viet Vodau,
35:11mainly the arm locks.

37:01The younger children also try to learn the different choreographies mastered by the older ones, which will help them work their way through Vietvordal's different levels.
37:31At this age, we can't do that.

38:50Let's go.
39:20Viet Vodau has come a long way in the last decade and has acquired many new
39:50devotees of all ages. More and more parents are enrolling their children in Viet Vodau classes.
39:56As over and above combat skills, it also teaches noble principles such as comradeship,
40:02perseverance, love and respect.
40:15In the south of Hanoi, there's a lake known to all Vietnamese.
40:20Legend has it that once upon a time, the king discovered a sword in a fishing net and used
40:26it in all his wars, notably the one where the Chinese were expelled from the kingdom and
40:31peace restored.
40:32With the war over, the king enjoyed taking boat trips on the lake.
40:41One day, the golden turtle god emerged from the depths of the lake and snatched the sword
40:47from the king.
40:50The king realized that the golden turtle had entrusted him with the sword and had come
40:55to take it back once peace reigned again, as he had no use for it.
40:59He had no use for it.
41:01Succeeding dynasties have embellished the banks of the lake ever since.
41:05Succeeding dynasties have embellished the banks of the lake ever since.
41:16Succeeding dynasties have embellished the banks of the lake and also visited the south of Hanoi to the
41:20lake.
41:21Succeeding dynasties have embellished the banks of the lake, but only the other way
41:25were involved in the north and co-send of the lake, but also the other ones who SARF is
41:30that sometimes a few years ago, as we were talking about a few years ago, it was very
41:33many years ago.
41:33In days gone by, there were a great many turtles in the lake, but no longer.
41:59But to see a turtle in the lake today is seen as a good omen for the coming weeks.
42:04In Vietnam, as in other cultures, turtles symbolize longevity and wisdom.
42:10In the Japanese and the Japanese, they have to be able to do the same and the same.
42:16In the Japanese, they have to be able to do the same and the same.
42:22Oh, my God.
42:52Despite the country's strong sense of tradition, the Vietnamese love to go out, have a drink and enjoy themselves.
43:05Vietnam, and particularly Hanoi, blends modernism and tradition.
43:12Hanoi is the epitome of a booming city.
43:17Many tourists, especially young westerners, come to the country to experience this festive atmosphere.
43:47Unlike some cities, Hanoi is full of life, even very late at night.
43:54.
44:01.
44:39Hanoi has many ancient trees, hundreds of years old, which are classified as part of
45:05UNESCO's World Heritage.
45:06In spite of the city's development, the area around the trees has been preserved.
45:12In summertime, many youngsters and their families go out at night and meet up in the squares
45:17where these trees stand.
46:19In summer, because it's too hot to go out during the daytime, there are many forms of entertainment
46:32available to the Vietnamese in the evenings, concerts, puppet theatres or outdoor cinemas.
47:28In the Viet Vo Dao Dojo, the children can learn lots of different choreographies to perform
47:33at shows.
47:35Vietnam is a traditionally communist country where patriotism is encouraged among the populace,
47:40especially its younger generation.
47:42And who will grow their dreams in their nation...

49:20It has to be remembered that Viet Vodau's motto is be strong to be useful
49:25The idea is to be strong mentally as well as physically and to be helpful to others
49:31The blue color of the uniform represents immensity the purity of the skies and the oceans
49:36Because the future of any culture any sport and the values they embody is reliant on good communication to the next generation
49:44Viet Vodau masters do all in their power to pass on the art to the younger generation

50:27Vietnamese have lived for centuries amidst a moral and religious universe built on beliefs and values issuing from the cult of ancestor worship
50:35Buddhism Confucianism and Taoism
50:37But Viet Nam has also been heavily influenced by Western culture whether it be its cinema its music architecture or literature
