It is said that a Mongolian learns to ride a horse before learning to walk. This national sport is celebrated during Naadam, the country’s national festival, which features horse racing, archery competitions, and wrestling matches. From the vast deserted steppes to Ulaanbaatar, the entire country becomes an arena.

00:00Thank you for listening.
06:17But it's the guard.
06:34Wrestling is the main event.
06:36More than just a simple game, it's an art, a veritable institution, just as sumo is in Japan.
06:47Oddly enough, there are no weight, age or rank categories.
06:52All participants are mixed together and take part in the tournament equally.
06:57A child, for example, might end up in competition with an adult.
07:02Wrestling has been practiced since the beginning of time.
07:19The rules are simple.
07:21The participant, who brings his opponent to the ground first, wins and will go on to the next round.
07:27Nine rounds are held over the three days of competition.
07:42Wrestlers who win five rounds in a row are awarded the title of Falcon.
07:47A wrestler who wins six rounds becomes an elephant.
07:50The winner of the whole competition is changed into a lion.
07:54If a lion wins again the following year, he becomes a giant.
07:58A giant who wins a third time becomes a national giant.
08:01And if the national giant is strong enough to win four times in a row,
08:05he is declared invincible, naturally.
08:08And if one's true, a national and a huge one has chosen especially in a row.
08:11As much as two people will begin to win four times in a row,
08:13they will eventually come to the loss of one another.
08:15Why are you now more than one another?
08:17And why are you so excited about that?
08:18Do not care.
08:19And what do you think about that?
08:20What do you think about it?
08:21No way or what do you think about it?
08:22The answer is that you, the answer is you.
08:24The answer is to go.
08:26The answer is to go.

19:11Polo, a recent sport in NADAM competitions.
20:21Archery is one of the three most important events of the NADAM.
20:24It's a tradition going back to Genghis Khan, who introduced it to help him select the most skillful archers.
20:36Participants use wooden bows with strings made from animal tendons.
20:40The arrows are made from branches and bird feathers.
20:44The men stand 75 meters away from the target and shoot 40 arrows in all.
20:53The judges stand in all.
20:55Judges stand to either side of the target.
20:59They intone a song called the ukai in crescendo so as to encourage the archer.
21:05They raise their hands skyward to announce the result of the shots.
21:11The archery event has been open to women for the last few decades.
21:17Women stand only 60 meters from the target and shoot 20 arrows.

22:33Other events take place during Nadam, like here, a knuckle-bones competition.
23:03Here we go.
23:33Shortly before the beginning of the festival, hundreds, even thousands of people converge
23:56from across the steppe towards the places where the events are to be held.
24:02For some, particularly the nomads, the festivities provide an opportunity to meet friends and
24:07relatives that they've not seen since last year.
24:10Jairs are erected everywhere around the villages.
24:15And not far from the horse race finishing line, a stage is set up where groups perform traditional
24:22Mongolian or more modern music.
24:24Any and all means of transport are used in order not to miss this event.

26:53The day of competitions is coming to an end.
27:10And quite a day it was.
27:12Yet even though it was extremely tiring, there are still a few trying out their bows.
28:41The Erdène Zoo Monastery, or Jewel Temple, was built in 1585 and is undoubtedly the oldest
29:01Buddhist monastery in Mongolia.
29:06A wall of stupas guards the entrance to this monastery.
29:09Although it suffered greatly under Stalin, it miraculously still stands today.
29:20Only a few temples have survived, and the monks were not allowed back to work until after
29:25the end of communism.
29:30There are 108 typically Tibetan Chortans, 108 being a sacred Buddhist number.
29:34The surrounding walls were built from the ruins of the ancient Mongol capital, whereas the
29:47main temple has been beautifully restored and now houses a rich collection of sacred objects.
29:51Even within the monastery we find, of course, the ever-present Jairs.
30:08Even within the monastery we find, the ever-present Jairs.
30:22All Buddhist monasteries have prayer wheels.
30:39They usually consist of a cylinder with written mantras inside.
30:55They are generally aligned, but they don't always have the same shape or the same colour.
31:01They do, however, have the same function.
31:08The cylinders are spun clockwise.
31:10Mongols believe that spinning the wheel is equivalent to reading the mantra.
31:14This allows the prayer to fly away.

31:57Ulaanbaatar is the capital of Mongolia.
32:27It is the political, economic, industrial, scientific and cultural centre.
32:36Administratively, it has the status, unique in Mongolia, of a federal municipality, comparable
32:41to that of a province.
32:46The city stretches from east to west in the bottom of the Tuul River Valley.
32:51Today the Mongolian capital numbers about 1.3 million inhabitants, or about 45% of the
32:57total population of Mongolia.
33:00Ulaanbaatar is a modern city, mixing Soviet architecture with new constructions.
33:14During Nadam, everything is closed.
33:16It is the time for Mongols to meet and celebrate for three days.
33:21Cars proudly sport the colours of the Mongolian flag and everyone dresses up for the festivities.
33:29The city centre is easily visited on foot.
33:32Ulaanbaatar is centred around Genghis Khan Square, formerly Sukhbata Square.
33:38A statue of the revolutionary hero Sukhbata was erected here, and since 2006, a giant statue
33:44of Genghis Khan has dominated the square.
33:51The Ulaanbaatar, in contrast to Kakorin, takes place in a stadium.
34:16The archery competition is held in an annex of the stadium.
34:25It is, moreover, free for all spectators.
34:31Apart from individual archery events, there are also archery teams composed of ten archers.
34:37Each archer is given four arrows.
34:41Each team has to score 33 surs.
34:45A sur is a target in the form of leather cylinders.
35:07Men shoot their arrows from a distance of 75 meters away from the target, women from 65 meters.
35:24Right up to the end of the event, when the medals are awarded, the archers are usually dressed
35:28in a traditional costume called a dél.
35:43There are two slots.
