00:00Well, plenty of cold coming, but the core of this cold that's coming is going to be felt most across the southeastern United States.

00:12What I'm going to show you are some of the tools, the models that I use on a daily basis, at least a small sampling of them.

00:24All right, let me show you what's going on.
00:27First, I want to show you, I was mentioning this earlier, that it's going to get colder in a lot of places in the northern United States.
00:34But where you're really going to notice it the most is going to end up being across the southern tier of the U.S.
00:39I want to show you this.
00:41These are the temperature departures.
00:43So if you took the high temperatures on Sunday and compared it to the historical average, this is what you're looking at.
00:51Well, let me show you this.
00:52These are the 24-hour temperature changes here.
00:55So, I mean, you're talking on Sunday, you're talking about a temperature change from Dallas, Memphis, and toward Lexington, where it's 20 to 30 degrees lower in the temperature only.
01:06And by the way, there's going to be some wind with this as well.
01:09So this is going to be quite cold air as it comes on south.
01:12But as I mentioned, the area that's really going to feel the majority of the cold relative to normal is going to be the southeastern United States.
01:21Take a look at this.
01:22I mean, this is, well, let me show it to you again.
01:24This is very impressive when you look at this.
01:27So what you're looking at here, all right, high temperatures on Monday.
01:30How does that compare to the historical averages?
01:34And there's an area in here from Nashville, Birmingham, toward Atlanta, where you're looking at temperatures, 20 to 25 degrees below the historical average.
01:45That doesn't just take the high temperatures on Monday and make it feel more like January.
01:51It's actually colder than January standards with some wind.
01:56But, you know, and then once you get up into the northeast and the Midwest, Chicago, Detroit, it's colder than normal.
02:00Know that about it.
02:01It's more of a taste of December, but, boy, this cold is going to be quite impressive across the southeastern United States.
02:08And let me show you why.
02:10I want to show you the upper air pattern and show you how this cold air starts to manifest itself across the eastern United States.
02:21So here we are today, and what we've been concentrating on all week is that you've got this.
02:26This was the final storm that came in at the northwest.
02:29It did so yesterday.
02:31Your real cold air is up here.
02:32This is the upper low right over Hudson Bay.
02:35This has all of the cold.
02:37And how this is going to work is the storms all week have been taking this track, and then with others coming behind it, this upper low, which has the cold air, has been sitting here and sitting here and sitting here.
02:48But this, see, this is the last piece of energy in this flow, what we call the caboose, right?
02:54It's the final one.
02:55Watch what it does.
02:56It's a lot farther south.
02:57Look at the track of it, and here it is as we head into Saturday evening.
03:02It's right in here, right across Missouri.
03:04And as this swings by, and we'll show the snow with it, this upper low in here, which has been sitting over Hudson Bay, gets dragged south.
03:15And as we go forward, watch as we get into Sunday evening, then Monday afternoon.
03:20Take a look at that.
03:22And when it comes to cold air in meteorology, just follow the wind flow.
03:26I mean, look at the wind flow.
03:27Straight out of the north from Hudson Bay all the way down into the southeast.
03:34And then the upper low itself is sitting right over Tennessee, and that's the core of the coldest air.
03:41Now, listen, it's going to be cold everywhere on Monday, but in the southeast, I think this is going to be quite nasty, nasty cold air, because not only do you have the cold air, I want to show you this.
03:53Look at this.
03:54Look at these lines here.
03:56These are isobars, lines of equal pressure, and the more you have, the winder it's going to be.
04:01So not only do we have the cold, but you're going to have the wind to contend with here.
04:06So let me show you what the modeling is showing here, and I mean, the modeling usually does very well with the temperatures here.
04:12So I want to take you, this is Monday afternoon.
04:16Look at these temperatures.
04:17Atlanta around 40 degrees.
04:19The 50 degree line is all the way down, all the way down to I-10, and then it goes up into the Carolinas.
04:28But your widespread 40s here, even some 30s, once you get toward Nashville, Memphis around 40 degrees, Knoxville at 34.
04:38So that's bad enough, right?
04:40How about what does the wind look like here?
04:42These are the projected winds.
04:44And by the way, these are not, these are not gusts.
04:48These are the sustained.
04:49Look at these winds.
04:5030 mile per hour winds in here.
04:52Look at this.
04:53This yellow in here is 30.
04:54Anything in green is between 20 and 25.
04:59So you're 30 mile per hour winds in here and 20 mile per hour winds.
05:04You're going to have gusts 30 to 40 miles per hour.
05:06And with temperatures in the 40s, that's AccuWeather real field temperatures in the 20s.
05:12That is cold for the southeast any time of the year.
05:17And oh, by the way, now watch what happens here.
05:19Because we've been worried about this as well, because there is likely to be a frost and freeze with this as we move into Monday night.
05:27Watch what happens to the winds.
05:29I want to show you this.
05:29These are the projected winds.
05:31Monday evening, late, and then Tuesday morning.
05:34See, you have an area of high pressure here.
05:37You can see the clockwise winds.
05:38So what happens is you're going to diminish the winds in here.
05:41Now, the winds stay up into the Carolinas, but because of that, clear skies, light winds, dry air, you're going to be looking at this.
05:50This is, I mean, this is going to be a widespread frost and freeze, I'm afraid, across much of the southeast as we head into next week.
06:08So early next week, you're going to have a frost and freeze all the way down to I-10 here.
06:13And then you're going to have a freeze all the way down to Interstate 20.
06:18So this is easily the coldest air mass of the season.
06:22And for many, this cold, as we had in the Monday afternoon, is going to be pretty, it's going to be pretty nasty.
06:30You know, by the way, let me show you this.
06:32Temperatures Wednesday morning, Wednesday morning, across parts of the southeast.
06:37It's not quite as cold, but you have 30s all the way down into the Florida panhandle.
06:43That's quite cold.
06:44So get ready.
06:45It's coming.
