00:36Join me as we celebrate Kaylee Joy in her unwavering commitment to those who are often overlooked.

00:50My name's Lacey Chabert, and I'm on a mission to find unsung heroes who definitely

00:59dedicate their lives to serving their communities.

01:17We have only three days to create epic surprise parties to honor our dedicated heroes.

01:24Now, let's get ready to celebrate.

01:36Today, I'm meeting with Dr. Liza Bearman at the New Village Girls Academy, which is one

01:48of the schools that Kaylee Joy's nonprofit services.

01:57Welcome to New Village Girls Academy, which is one of Kaylee Joy Cooper's favorite, favorite

02:00places.

02:01Tell me more about Kaylee Joy.

02:03How do you know each other?

02:04How long have you been in her life?

02:05I met Kaylee Joy when she was 16 years old.

02:09She started in 11th grade, and so I got to know her.

02:12And also as a collaborator with her nonprofit called Girl Well.

02:16Hi.

02:17My name is Kaylee Joy Cooper.

02:18I'm 20 years old.

02:19I'm the founder and CEO of Girl Well.

02:22Girl Well means empowering girls to empower other girls.

02:34I'm nominating Kaylee Joy for the surprise party because she has spent almost all of her

02:40teenage years making life better for other people.

02:43Girl Well is a nonprofit organization which provides self-care kits for underserved teenage

02:50girls.

02:51In almost 30 years of being an educator, I have rarely, if ever, met a teenager providing

03:00for other teenagers in this way.

03:03It's unprecedented.

03:04My parents just really always made sure that we were giving back to our community and reminding

03:09us that what we have is very precious, but it can be taken away at any moment.

03:13But also, more importantly, that we're no better than someone else because of what we have

03:17access to.

03:22When COVID-19 happened, a lot of people my age couldn't really understand what was happening

03:28to us, especially psychologically and what that meant for us.

03:32It really forced me to take care of myself because all I had was me.

03:37You know, I went from having all my friends and leaning on them in order to be well to leaning

03:41on myself.

03:42And so, in a lot of ways, I'm grateful for that time because it taught me the importance

03:46of self-confidence, of self-worth.

03:49So, wellness is something that will always be important to me and that I want to make

03:53sure everyone has access to.

03:56New Village Girls Academy serves about 30 percent homeless kids, 30 percent foster-involved youth,

04:0130 percent pregnant and parenting teenage girls.

04:04And she really wanted to figure out what the school's needs were.

04:07She decided that self-care kids during COVID would be a beautiful way to show the girls

04:11that they were still cared about and that they still matter.

04:14While they're at home on Zoom, a lot of them with babies and trying to still navigate the

04:18high school world.

04:19Are you guys having fun?

04:20Yes.

04:21So much fun.

04:22I love this.

04:23Unfortunately, there are so many youth, in particular, that are in homelessness or foster

04:29care or just in need of a self-care kit.

04:32So, I haven't stopped running since.

04:34So, we've invited you here today because we're actually having a Girlwell packing party with

04:38some of the students who received Kaylee Joy's Girlwell kits during the pandemic and we're

04:43wondering if you'd like to join.

04:53This is Ms. Q. She's the principal of New Village Girls Academy.

04:58Welcome to New Village Girls Academy.

04:59We are a small independent charter.

05:01Our goal is to work with young women who have experienced extraordinary challenges.

05:05So, what we focus on is ensuring that all of our girls are not only meeting all of their

05:10high school requirements, but that they're also learning how to care for themselves during

05:14school and post high school.

05:16The care packages that we get, they have items in them like masks, fuzzy socks, creams, and

05:23everything else that are usually in these bags.

05:26Our girls can't afford to purchase certain things.

05:29Have any of you received a package from Girlwell, and what did it mean to you?

05:33Oh, I did in the past, and it was really nice because I got stuff that I was needed, and it was

05:42really helpful.

05:43I put the little self thing on my mirror.

05:46Oh, the card, the affirmation?

05:47Yeah.

05:48Yeah.

05:49It was in a rough time at that time.

05:50A little bit of comfort.

05:51Yeah.

05:52That's awesome.

05:53The kits are packed at what we call a packing party.

05:57Two lipsticks, one brush, one sock, one eye mask, one undercoat.

06:01And so packing parties are more than a community service activity.

06:05They're an opportunity for girls to be able to practice self-care, to fill up their cups,

06:09and then to make sure that they are filling up others by packing the self-care kits,

06:14and then also making sure that they make it to their location.

06:17And what are you guys putting into the kit?

06:19We have a coloring book and a little baggie.

06:23Like toiletries or cosmetics?

06:25Yeah.

06:26And then a face mask, makeup brushes, a fuzzy sock, and a regular sock.

06:31Cozy.

06:32Why don't you do the envelopes?

06:33A Girlwell self-care kit focuses on mental, emotional, and physical wellness.

06:38Lipstick and socks to go with physical.

06:41Then we also have things for mental self-care, like a journal, or we have coloring books sometimes.

06:47And then for emotional self-care, we have hotline numbers, letters of affirmation,

06:53and also access to free teletherapy in the kits.

06:56At least for me, I'm honored to give to the girls these things.

07:00She started something, you know, and it's getting passed forward, so it's really nice.

07:05We are planning a party for her.

07:07Yes.

07:08Planning the celebration, trying to figure out exactly what the food will be.

07:11She loves brunch.

07:12Color schemes.

07:13She loves brunch.

07:15Do you know any other preferences like her favorite colors?

07:17I just know that she will want some of this to happen there, too.

07:26I loved being a part of what Girlwell does.

07:28It's just incredible.

07:29I mean, it's not just about the items in the bag, which are wonderful and needed, but

07:33it's also the words of encouragement, the resources for help.

07:36I think the biggest part of it is just making someone know that they are seen and that they

07:42matter and help someone to keep going, just knowing that they're not alone.

08:09So Kaylee Joy is the most remarkable young woman.

08:13She started an organization called Girlwell, and she provides self-care kits to young women

08:19through schools, through so many different outreach programs, and her story is just amazing.

08:25I got to meet with Dr. Liza, who was her teacher at one point in time, and now she's

08:29her mentor, and she was telling me about how Kaylee Joy, you know, began Girlwell.

08:34How did she get involved in this?

08:35So a few years ago, as a teenager, she was going through a challenging time in her own

08:39life, and realized that if she was having to be taught how to care for herself, and,

08:44you know, again, not just her physical needs, but mind, body, spirit, that there must be

08:49so many young women out there who also possibly didn't have that kind of support.

08:53And these self-care kits aren't just about physical needs.

08:55I mean, there's everything from toiletries, cozy socks, like all kinds of different items.

09:00She's a really, really amazing hero, and I'm so happy that we're so happy.

09:03I think we should throw a party for her.

09:04Yes.

09:05I like to celebrate her.

09:06I do.

09:07Definitely.

09:08So Dr. Liza said that Kaylee Joy loves the boho aesthetic.

12:14My son said he woke up and he heard what sounded like pebbles hitting his window.

12:21And when he finally got his eyes opened, he saw that his room was turning orange.

12:26Oh my gosh.

12:27We just ran out and I left my phone and everything in the house.

12:34It was a lot, but it really gave me a very unique perspective of what many of the girls

12:40that I served could face.

12:42Because temporary displacement, people don't realize how often that leads to homelessness.

12:47At a time of such personal loss and trauma and tragedy, it seems like it even propelled her forward.

12:56When she knows there's purpose, she's going to complete it until it's done.

13:02I would love to see where you keep all of these items.

13:05Most people would give up after losing so much, but not Kaylee Joy.

14:05where Kaylee Joy goes to college.

14:18She puts them on her mirror because she thinks it's important, like, when you're saying affirmations

14:22to look at yourself while you're saying them so that you can remind yourself of what you're

14:27telling yourself.

14:28One of the things that's really important to Kaylee Joy outside of affirmations and things

14:33of that nature is keeping in touch with her friends.

14:36So she used to collect every letter that anyone ever sent to her.

14:40Unfortunately, in the fire, that was one of the things we lost.

14:45And so I'm really, the only thing that would make this room better for her would be that.

14:50And I'm kind of, you know, sad that she doesn't get to have that.

14:54I'm glad you shared that with me because that gives me, it gives me an idea.

15:00Losing something with so many memories attached isn't just a thing.

16:05She gave each and every one like a card and like a little frame of us and her together.

16:14I heard she writes a handwritten note in each and every bag.

16:18And that's just, that basically just shows like who she is.

16:21And I feel like that's the foundation of her organization.

17:20And Marissa had this amazing idea of painting fabric to hang on the wall.

18:24Literally some of them are probably dropping her off at the airport and going to turn around

18:27and then go get on their own flight.

18:31So I'm thinking maybe we could hide some of her girlfriends back there and then they

18:33could be an extra surprise.

18:34The space is huge.

18:35So it's like perfect for that, really.

19:20We're making friendship bracelets.

19:21I was thinking at the celebration tomorrow, we're going to have a do-it-yourself, make-your-own

19:25candle bar.

19:27And then everyone can package up their candle and I thought we could top it with some friendship

19:30bracelets.

19:31So excited.

19:32I have to tell you, I'm a huge fan of your work and I hear your voice in my home almost every

19:37day.

19:38Inside Out is probably tip top of our favorite animated movies.

19:42As a parent, I really appreciate a lot of what that movie has to say.

19:45That literally just made my whole day.

19:48I'm so happy that you guys resonated with it.

19:50When I recorded Inside Out 2, I was 13 when I started the process.

19:54I was going through a lot personally.

19:56Just like with anxiety and my mental health struggles, I was diagnosed with an anxiety

20:01disorder, which was really like kind of scary at first, you know?

20:05Of course.

20:06What I realized is that this is something that all of us struggle with.

20:10You know, everyone has anxiety at times.

20:12Yes.

20:13I certainly have had my struggles with it.

20:14Yeah.

20:15I mean, in the movie, there's the whole anxiety attack and I've had plenty of those.

20:19Yes.

20:20And I think when I started recording, that was the first time I realized that I wasn't

20:24alone in this journey.

20:25Yeah.

20:26But I feel like it can be really hard for teens because no teens really talk about their mental

20:31health, I find.

20:32And so that's actually why I started working with Girl Well.

20:37I actually met Kaylee Joy through her brother, Elijah, at a Girl Well packing party.

20:42And from the second I walked into the packing party, I knew that it was something I wanted

20:47to be a part of.

20:48So for the last three years, I have been involved with Girl Well.

20:51I'm her brand ambassador, which is so fun.

20:54I love the mission of Girl Well.

20:56And I think what's really special about Girl Well in particular is that we've been able

21:00to reach so many different young women from all walks of life and encourage them through

21:04these kids.

21:05They're told that they're not enough.

21:07They're told that they're not worthy.

21:09They're told that they don't matter.

21:12And that is something that angers me.

21:16And so my way to address the anger is by showing them the exact opposite.

21:23These kids are reversing that and saying, no, you are worthy.

21:27You are strong.

21:28You are beautiful.

21:29You deserve to be here.

21:30And I think that's just such an important message that Kaylee Joy is spreading.

21:34And I just am excited to continue that mission of Girl Well.

21:37Do you think she's going to like our theme that we've come up with?

21:42Two things about Kaylee Joy.

21:43She loves brunch and she loves boho.

21:44So this is the perfect party for her.

21:47So when I got to go to Kaylee Joy's house, her mom showed me her room, you know, and I saw that she had this mirror with all of these affirmations.

21:55And I have an idea for a hero moment for her, but I am hoping that I can gather some positive affirmations and thoughts and words of encouragement maybe from her friends and family.

22:09I know so many people who absolutely adore Kaylee Joy.
