00:00I'm here in Thousand Oaks California where one child welfare attorney turned her passion for

00:16helping foster youth into a thriving nonprofit I love to be there for kids especially teenagers

00:22and young adults she's dedicated to more than just housing and resources she's inspiring them

00:27to chase their biggest dreams and she loves Christmas so what'd you say but I think we

00:40need to do Christmas in Hawaii join me as we celebrate Tammy's commitment to helping foster

00:46youth feel seen supported and loved my name is Lacey Chabert and I'm on a mission to find

00:54unsung heroes who dedicate their lives to serving their communities everyday champions whose impact

01:01reaches far beyond the work they do it's their turn for the spotlight with the help of family

01:08friends and our superstar planners I am so excited about this celebration it's gonna be great we have

01:15only three days to create an epic surprise parties to honor our dedicated heroes

01:29now let's get ready to celebrate

01:31I am visiting the Raising Hope headquarters to meet Laura the woman who nominated our hero Tammy

01:48I can't wait to learn about Tammy in this incredible nonprofit

01:52welcome to our chaos this is normally where Tammy sits she thankfully is taking her mom to a doctor's

02:10appointment this morning so we were able to sneak you in

02:12my name is Tammy Barnett I am the executive director and co-founder of Raising Hope

02:27a stable caring adult can change the life of a young person who is aging out of foster care

02:32Raising Hope directly impacts foster youth because one we're in relationship with them and then we also

02:39get to do things that push their lives in a different trajectory and that's what we're here for

02:50I'm nominating Tammy because she does so much for the youth in our community who've experienced foster

02:55care that we really want to do something just for her to give her that pat on the back that every

03:01nonprofit leader needs from time to time Tammy has helped thousands of foster youth transition from

03:08official foster care into young adulthood she really saw how the youth who had experienced foster

03:14care were falling through the cracks once they transitioned and became adults and she really

03:19wanted to make sure that they weren't left behind or forgotten I wanted to make an impact in the lives of

03:27children and families directly and so in 2015 we incorporated and became Raising Hope look at all

03:33these goodies we got from our donors Raising Hope is a big family before I wouldn't really have anybody to

03:41go to and that would make me feel like oh they truly care for me but with Raising Hope it's like I belong

03:47here Raising Hope provides services that help youth who are aging out of foster care our mentorship program

03:54provides one-to-one support and then we also have life skills classes we'll teach them about budgeting

04:00finding stable housing communication goal setting all of those things that we all need to become stable

04:08adults I'm working on a basket right now for a youth who just got their first apartment so we're going

04:23to give them some cleaning supplies and some hygiene items to really get them started because all those

04:28things add up and when you're on a really limited income you really need help yeah we try to support

04:33them in the ways that like your parents would support you when you're a teenager or a young adult we

04:38really just want to be their family that's incredible we can provide all the resources that they need but what

04:52they really need is relationship they need caring stable adults that won't give up on them that will go

04:57through the hard things with them and not leave them and sometimes you stumble and you can't get

05:02back up but Raising Hope they help you like I'd probably be homeless right now my whole world has

05:07changed and I really want to say thank you when we get to help a youth in need it feels amazing we get

05:15to see them go from just dejected and feeling so alone to finding hope which means that not only are

05:24they getting to that next step but they're starting to see that life can be good and that is pretty

05:31amazing to see Tammy is a hero because she has dedicated her life to foster youth she pours her heart

05:39into them and it's evident to our entire community how much she loves these kids you really worked hard

05:45for this and overcame a pandemic to graduate and look at all these ropes he's got super proud of

05:52you Chris I'm so happy that you've nominated Tammy because what you're all doing here is so important

05:57she's so deserving honestly like it makes me want to cry just thinking about how excited I am to surprise

06:03her and how much she deserves this incredible and where is Tammy from Tammy's from Hawaii originally and

06:10she is so passionate about her culture she even has these like play earrings she wears almost every

06:15day and she misses it she hasn't been back in about five years because she's working so hard here well

06:20maybe we can bring a little bit of Hawaii to her oh in our party yeah I mean we're just starting to

06:26think about a theme and I wanted to get some information from you and Tammy's favorite holiday is

06:30Christmas okay I'm adding that to the list Hawaii and Christmas a girl after my own heart ideas are

06:39already forming let's see what else I can learn about our hero we have this big holidays of hope

06:43event where the youth submit wishes and then our community members fulfill those wishes so they'll

06:49submit like I want headphones or maybe a new pair of shoes and then the person who's taking that wish

06:55we'll wrap them and then they bring those gifts here and then we have a big party incredible Tammy's

07:02just taken what started as a small nonprofit and just grown it into the organization that we have

07:08today wow we even have a life skills class happening right now if you want to go see this is our final

07:13banquet where they learn etiquette so important I'm gonna be honest with you I've actually never

07:18taken an etiquette class no I might learn a thing or two today that'd be great I would love to go

07:22awesome let's go okay I love that raising hope teaches life skills to their youth an etiquette

07:27class will teach them skills they can use throughout their entire life wow this is lovely you're gonna

07:31see at your table an etiquette dinner pamphlet pick your favorite fact in that and then I want you to

07:36teach it to the adults at your table as though they've never heard it before in their lives okay I'm

07:41gonna give you just a second to flip through a well a good one okay do not eat vegan chips with your

07:47fingers I'm definitely guilty of that did it tell you how to eat it no it just said look at it

07:52basically I feel like I should bring out a notepad or something okay you're gonna look to your left

07:59and there's gonna be two forks there which one do you think is for the salad the small one or the big

08:04one small small one yeah exactly that one makes a lot of sense you're gonna use that fork and you're

08:08gonna go ahead and begin eating it's okay if I ask you a question while we eat do you know Tammy

08:13me personally yeah she's very involved with her program I like that she's super direct with the

08:18youth and you always see her around yeah she's super nice and do you have a relationship with

08:24Tammy oh yeah it's probably the best relationship I've ever had in my life she knows I'm I love

08:28cooking and stuff like that so she even asked her friends like hey Scott loves cooking would you love

08:33to hire her she's giving me so many opportunities like she's giving me the confidence that I really go

08:37out and like strive for what I want you know what I mean good for you and I've never had that kind

08:42of connection foreign it's amazing it's clear that Tammy's love and support is bringing out the

08:47best in these youth so we're planning a surprise celebration for Tammy and would you be able to

08:52come oh yeah really for Tammy anything yeah definitely maybe you guys could help me find out

08:57are you trying to cook some some sweets or a cake that would be awesome I would love to it sounds

09:03like Tammy has a deep passion for helping the raising hope youth get ahead in life no matter their

09:08interest thank you thank you take care so I'm excited to get back to headquarters and share

09:12everything I've learned with Lisa and Marissa hi Lacey hey good morning how are you doing great how

09:21are you good okay I have to ask you a question yeah have you ever taken an etiquette class no but my

09:28family needs to might really do because we don't know how to cut right and I feel like everyone like

09:33stabs like food there might be um some eating with hands in our house I think I'm from the south

09:39right so southern manors I definitely felt like my grandmother was very proud of me today well tell

09:44us what you learned what is Tammy what tell us some things about her well she's a lion she even wears

09:49these little earrings that are lays all the time those are a personal favorite of hers awesome um listen

09:55to this she loves Christmas so what'd you say I started doing cartwheels I was like Christmas say

10:03more so we already have all the decor we can just get it from Lisa's garage so this is going to be

10:07really easy for us Marissa right but the twist is I think we need to do like a mele kalikimaka

10:13Christmas in Hawaii holiday luau vibes I love that yeah it seems so obvious something really unique

10:22is something we haven't done before yeah I know that we did our Thanksgiving last year on the

10:26beach but it was kind of scary right with the weather it's actually raining it's really starting to rain

10:30it's not it's not please let it not rain on our beautiful celebration so I do think that it might be

10:36best to find a venue that's indoor and outdoor right that's smart it's a backup plan it's hard to find

10:41though right all right let's do some research and see New Valley okay and I mean I just you know

10:48throwing it out there that I am available to make Christmas cookies for this oh last time you made

10:53them they were absolutely delicious and beautiful but can you please give us a tutorial this time yes

10:58I want to know how you do the whole like flooding of the icing and all that just my arm she would

11:02love it I think this is a perfect plan and if it's gonna be Hawaiian I feel like we need blaze yeah okay

11:07I will go track down some lace okay all right we'll let you know we find thank you see you back in a

11:12minute okay we're gonna follow you out I am so excited about this holiday luau theme it just seems like

11:17the perfect celebration for an amazing hero like Tammy but I would be lying if I said I wasn't a

11:23little stressed it's a lot to pull off and I'm just hoping we can pull it all together before the big

11:27day we got a call back from an amazing venue we do need someone to pop down there and make sure it

11:32looks as good in real life as it does online Clark hi Lacey thank you for meeting me here only thing I'm

11:38worried about is when she drives up that is the entrance right there I don't know that we could all

11:42hide in this area this venue is absolutely beautiful work your magic Lacey let me make some calls and

11:47see what I can do I'm a little worried about the wind maybe it's the gusts are gonna get out of the

11:51way and then when the guests get here later it'll be calm

11:53I am so excited about this holiday luau theme I'd really like to bring a little bit of Hawaii to Los Angeles

12:06so today I'm stopping by Aloha flowers to learn how to make some Hawaiian leis with raising hope foster

12:12youth Leila and Chris I'm Lacey hi Lacey I'm Kathy I'm the owner of Aloha flowers and this is my

12:19girlfriend Leilani who are your friends these are my friends Leila and Chris thank you for coming I'm

12:26excited to learn to make a lay should we get started absolutely we're gonna sew the orchid through the

12:31needle push it together all the way there you go okay originally leis prefer royalty and then as time

12:40goes on the leis were for friends for Aloha Friday it would almost be improper for us to host this party

12:47for her and not have a lay to present exactly my Hawaiian roots are really at the core of everything

12:56that I do I think that is instilled in me to be kind to be generous and to just give people the

13:04benefit of the doubt and to care about the things that really matter and let go of the things that

13:09really don't matter was there a particular story or memory you have of Tammy when you realized that she

13:20was going to be someone that would be very meaningful to your personal life yeah my biological mother was

13:25very very sick and actually can I have a second of course you can it's okay so yeah my mother died

13:37during my first year of college and I was in charge of all like the legal stuff but also like her funeral

13:43planning and immediately Tammy was like hey I found this like really beautiful church near you okay like

13:48what else do you need like let's get everything like figured out yeah Tammy the volunteers and like

13:53other people I've met with raising hope were like we genuinely care about you and we're gonna do this

13:59for you are invested in your life yeah definitely Chris can you tell me a little bit about your

14:04relationship with Tammy Tammy to me is kind of like a second mom my mom lost me to the system and Tammy

14:14is my found mother I couldn't imagine having a better family I needed a suit for a speech and debate

14:22and competition that I was partaking in and a social worker got me connected with her met Tammy she

14:29helped me with buying that suit and then relationship just started there she's been there for my graduation

14:35from college had her there for my wedding and I even had her there for the birth of my son oh my gosh so

14:42you must be extremely close yeah I have no idea where I would be if it wasn't for Tammy yeah

14:49that's amazing it sounds like Tammy has really been there for some of the most important moments in

14:55their lives and it's got me thinking about my hero moments I just wonder if there's a way we can be a

15:00part of a huge moment in Tammy's life just a lot of pressure because I think it needs to be something

15:04incredibly special I love it it's so pretty cookie decorating is my favorite thing to do I love any

15:20excuse to make cookies hi Lacey hi you name it I'm there with my icing how are you doing today well I'm

15:27so happy because I get to decorate cookies well I would love okay okay maybe Lacey maybe you'll do a

15:33snowman these are so fun for our holiday luau thing I can't wait for the decorating part there

15:38is two different types of icing thick icing okay and then there's flood icing and I wrote it on the

15:43back oh great you take your thick icing and you tap it down and then you lift up and you drop a line

15:53of icing down then you're gonna take your flood and this is the fun part okay you just fill it in

16:00like this but you have to outline it first otherwise otherwise it floods all over the

16:04sides Lacey you're doing so well something you can do now before your snowman dries is make lays for

16:11them I found these flower-shaped sprinkles and these are special tweezers you could just pick them up and

16:19drop them onto our frosty as a necklace like a lay I love this theme of holiday luau I think it's

16:24absolutely adorable so the color should of course be red and green and I was thinking of other things

16:30we could do for the decor we got some reese that we bought that we're gonna decorate with artificial

16:35birds of paradise and other red flowers since we're going with holidays I feel like we need like a snowman

16:41or something that's Hawaii there's no snow okay a sandman yeah oh my gosh Marisa right that is the

16:47cutest thing ever okay and I was also thinking there's a gifting event they do every holiday

16:53season called holidays of hope would there be room for a table where we could have our guests bring

16:58things we're gonna donate items yeah I think that is a great idea and then I can provide the wrapping

17:03paper oh yeah I have a new product line coming out with homework we wanted to see it I'll bring one of the

17:10samples to the party Marissa and I were thinking maybe like a pokey bar yeah I love that we were

17:14talking about a candy bar too yeah the cookies look so good this is gonna be amazing on our candy

17:19table other than that we're renting a tiki bar if you like the venue we got a call back from an

17:24amazing venue it's called the vineyards we do need someone to pop down there and make sure it looks as

17:29good in real life as it does online I'm happy to go look at it okay I was actually supposed to meet

17:33with Clark Tammy's husband so maybe I can ask him to meet me there even better sounds great I'll head out

17:38and I will call Clark on the way okay thank you Lacey Clark hi Lacey hi so nice to meet you you as

17:49well thank you for meeting me here this place is absolutely beautiful so I can't wait to check it

17:53out all right should we start looking around absolutely I'm so excited to get to spend some

17:57time with Tammy's husband Clark and get to learn more about her and fingers crossed we can find the

18:01perfect space for a celebration at this venue oh this is beautiful I've actually never been to

18:08this venue before and it's stunning wow it's so lush and green this will totally work for our holiday

18:13luau theme the only thing I'm worried about is when she drives up that is the entrance right there yeah

18:20I don't know that we could all hide in this area yeah so how long have you guys been married so we're

18:25working on our 22nd year been a good couple decades my husband Clark is my number one my rock and my best

18:36friend Clark and I met at Pepperdine University we planned this trip to go to Vegas to celebrate my

18:42graduation from law school and as we're driving Clark singing this cake song at the top of his lungs and

18:49it was terrible and I looked over at him and I just thought I'm gonna marry this guy and then at five

18:54months he asked me to marry him what was your wedding like we had the best wedding we got

19:00married on Oahu where she's from right on Waikiki Beach and I'm waiting for her to come down the aisle

19:05and they turn me around to the ocean and there she was on a canoe in her wedding gown sitting next to

19:12her father and she literally sailed up to the beach and her father gave her away like that to me

19:17it makes me tear up it was so amazing that is so beautiful we were just talking about how much

19:23she misses Hawaii right now and how much she was missing her father and everything my relationship

19:29with my dad is super special my dad is the wisdom that I hear in the back of my head whenever I'm

19:36doing anything he's just been a really steady rock in my life and it's shown me how to love people well

19:44and I'm really grateful for that do you think her dad would be able to fly in for the occasion if we

19:52helped with that that would be really really touching for her okay I mean it's gonna have

19:56to happen like immediately but we'll start making some calls okay I do think this space is beautiful

20:01but I'm a little worried about the surprise so let's check out the rest of the space I'd love to

20:05wow this is beautiful I think they do a lot of weddings here definitely I feel like that's where

20:16the ceremony would be right there in the chandelier it's so pretty did you celebrate your 20th anniversary

20:21it being such a milestone we talked about like going on some kind of trip with you couldn't come up with

20:27the funds for that but my kids helped me with like a small anniversary party with some of our friends

20:31it was me it was me I hate that they didn't get to celebrate their 20th anniversary was the romantic

20:36getaway of their dreams I would love to help them plan a trip and celebrate their love have you ever

20:42thought about renewing your vows or anything um interesting you bring that up we have talked

20:46about it I mean this might be too wild of an idea but is that something you'd want to do at the

20:51celebration absolutely I'd be happy to it's so sweet I think this is the hero moment I've been

20:58searching for I mean a vow renewal and a honeymoon it's a double hero moment and I love it I think

21:04I've outdone myself here I don't know about you but I think this is a great spot I think so too

21:09it's got everything we need perfect and now we're gonna renew some vows tomorrow okay please don't

21:15steal them but where are they going after this party you guys this wind is crazy oh no flight

21:21problem oh wow needs some medical care did happy sugar confirm that they can do the shaved ice yes

21:32and in fact so cute she's gonna be bringing coconut cups for people to eat the shaved ice out of she

21:38always comes up with great ideas short does I love this theme so much everything is really coming

21:43together for our holiday blue well actually hold on I'm getting a call oh it's Lacy okay good hi Lacy

21:48it's Lisa and Marissa oh my gosh I'm at the vineyards right now this venue is absolutely beautiful okay

21:53good you loved it yes it is stunning excellent another fun thing they just celebrated 20 years of

22:02marriage which is obviously such a huge milestone yes and so Clark and I came up with the idea what if

22:08they renewed their vows and then maybe we could work on doing some sort of trip or something

22:12huge that'd be so perfect well even more specifically I was thinking we could send

22:18them on a cruise there's a hallmark Christmas cruise I think will be perfect for them let

22:22me make some calls and see what I can do work your magic Lacy yes she would love that I think this is

22:27an incredible idea for my hero moment Tammy and Clark renewing their vows in front of all their loved

22:33ones including Tammy's dad and then gifting them with this wonderful trip to honor their 20 plus years

22:39together it sounds amazing but it is a lot to pull off so I'm kind of hoping for a Christmas miracle right

22:46about now you could pull it off Lacy you always you always work magic it's party day we're almost ready

23:04to set off to a tropical holiday paradise let's just hope there are no bumps along the way all right so I

23:11just wanted to go over where everything was going today sure so this wedding gazebo right here this is

23:16where they're gonna do their val renewal love it'll be great and we're gonna put the tiki bar right

23:20there in that corner so good and then on this corner here we're gonna do the wrapping station

23:24and then we'll have sand men and Reese decor I'm a little worried about the wind it's very

23:30windy very windy yeah good morning oh my goodness I love this Merry Christmas happy holidays you just

23:40have this laying around Queen of Christmas you even dressed up your cart yes it had to be on theme as

23:45well this is all for the wrapping station correct so that a bunch of blankets and shoes and robes and

23:50I thought we could wrap it up and then encourage people to get involved and feel like a wrapping

23:54party you only have four hours until the party starts we have a lot to do so let's get started okay

23:59I'll lay this down over here all right perfect you guys this wind is freezing maybe it's like the

24:12gusts we're gonna get out of the way and then when the guests get here later it'll be calm

24:16that's definitely that's definitely my hopeful thinking every time we have an outdoor party the

24:20weather just does not cooperate we really need these winds to die down or we'll have to move the

24:25party inside which will kind of ruin our lush luau vibe hopefully we can stick to our original plan

24:30oh cute oh I made a small guy too please don't steal them please please don't steal them but

24:38where are they going after this party she's gonna steal the deck board do these belong to someone your

24:42husband told us that you're not allowed to bring any more there's no hope for me ever parking my car

24:48in the garage so I say we're just full-on it's a Christmas storage unit that's all it is that's one

24:52more candy cane or two so I was looking at my phone and it says that the wind should die down in about

24:59an hour do you think that'll give us enough time to finish up we're cutting it close we only have

25:03three hours left oh no okay so the wind has taken down our salmon I am so sorry sir hi goodness goodness

25:27um wow this whole thing is broken so here we have your arms oh here's your nose glasses oh now your

25:36glasses are broken wow um this is bad does the North Pole have a hospital because we're gonna need it

25:42ladies slight problem oh wow you need some medical care okay what happened arms are broken off the

25:50glasses are broken this wind was so cruel and it just took your arms right off I think that we

25:57should go get our hot glue gun I'm gonna go get it from the toolkit okay be right back the whole

26:01thing is a mess it's a disaster the wind isn't doing us any favors but as long as the radar is right

26:07the wind should be dying down soon luckily these are all issues we can fix I just hope we can have

26:12everything set up in time there fine that's great hi hi how you doing oh my gosh I love your outfit

27:14love them all right let's platter them guys okay perfect I also did Christmas lights on a pineapple

27:21they are amazing this is adorable these plates are adorable thank you so much I'm so proud of this

27:28collection you should be it's stunning it's really it's like you made this for our party specifically

27:33this looks great all right I'm gonna get changed go change

27:37do you remember last December we were dancing the night away by the fire glow where did all the time go

27:53oh it feels like yesterday

28:08Lacey it looks amazing hey oh look at your sweet baby we went home and got changed and I grabbed the

28:15baby but she's saving her energy for the party yes what is this station so we're gonna be wrapping gifts

28:20we brought some stuff and I know guests are bringing things and we wanted to sort of emulate

28:24your holidays of hope yes thank you so much this is really pretty wrapping paper thank you so much

28:30this is from my line with Hallmark amazing it's really fun guests are about to start arriving okay the

28:36gifts are wrapped the food is ready and now it is time for family and friends to arrive it really does

28:42feel just feel just like Christmas hello come on in hi hi it is Kehlani so nice to meet you

38:45that money is going to help so many kids who are aging out of foster care through life skills

38:51through mentorship housing transportation so i'm really excited to put that money to use we are

38:57building a campus for youth who are aging out of foster care and i'm super excited about it it's

39:03housing is a big problem for our kids and we plan to eliminate homelessness for youth aging out of foster

39:09care and bring affordable housing to our youth with supportive classes and classrooms and job

39:15opportunities and so this is going to go um towards that thank you you're incredible yeah thank you so

39:21much it's our pleasure i get to keep this you do you have to cash it first you know i'll find a really big

39:29a great day thank you thank you so much this was a beautiful party it's the perfect type of love and

39:44kindness you know they're free everyone deserves a second chance so get on out your state of evidence

39:55there's no way all of the youth in this program know tammy and we truly appreciate tammy for who she

40:07is i just hope she knows how much she truly is loved and cared for by the youth all right thank you all so

40:15much i learned so much because of you and you're a big part of the reason that i'm shining hi tammy hi

40:38getting excited are you preparing oh my gosh it's always been on my bucket list of things that i wanted

40:43to do and so now we get to do it and i'm so excited to go on this cruise bringing it back to raising

40:48hope um what does this donation mean to raising hope we just live off of donations we literally

40:55cannot function and so having this donation allows us to go even further with helping youth i mean

41:02between the first filming and today we have already received so many requests for help so when i think

41:08about the donation that is going to cover those kids so i'm i'm so thankful that is amazing you truly

41:16are a pillar of strength for so many and i hope you can carry that in your heart and know that thank you
