00:00Welcome to the latest video from the Auto Magazine Tuning Blog.
00:10Today, we're all about the brand new 9th generation electric Golf from Volkswagen,
00:15which is being developed in collaboration with Rivian.
00:18The Golf that many of you love is undergoing an exciting transformation.
00:23Starting in 2029, the Golf 9 will be available exclusively as an electric car.
00:30The previous model had to make way for the bulbous ID.3.
00:36But Volkswagen has now initiated a U-turn and is planning to finally remove the combustion engine from its most popular model.
00:44Don't worry, this transition will take a few more years, meaning that the ID.3 will probably be retired by then.
00:51As Kai Grunitz, head of technical development, already hinted at at the beginning of the year.
00:56VW CEO Thomas Schaefer recently revealed that a new player is entering the game with the upcoming electric Golf.
01:05Rivian is supporting Volkswagen in the development of the 9th generation Golf.
01:09This new compact car will be powered exclusively by electricity and will be based on the upcoming Scalable Systems Platform, also known as SSP.
01:20A few weeks ago, Volkswagen and Rivian formed a €55 billion joint venture to develop an electrical architecture and software for next-generation vehicles.
01:30The Golf 9 will be one of the first models to be based on this new platform.
01:40Speaking to automotive news, Schaefer confirmed that Volkswagen needs Rivian's support to realize a complete reinvention of its iconic car.
01:48We've decided how we're going to implement the software-defined vehicle.
01:55That's going to happen with Rivian, the joint venture, by putting together the new electronics architecture.
02:02But we've also decided that we want to start this journey with an iconic product.
02:07So we're going to start with the Golf.
02:08Although we didn't originally plan to create a VW Rivian Golf, this shows how much the automotive industry is changing.
02:19Increasingly, established automakers like Volkswagen need the support of tech-savvy newcomers like Rivian.
02:26It's also interesting to note that Rivian introduced a product a while ago, the R3, which reminded many of the first Golf.
02:33The electric Golf 9, however, will not be launched until 2022.
02:42Officials in Wolfsburg have explained that we will have to wait until then to see a true production product that will fill the original's large shoes.
02:52Since the new Golf will not be available for another four years, Volkswagen has ample time to further improve the aforementioned ID.3.
03:03A completely redesigned version with improved hardware and a more premium interior that offers more physical buttons is set to hit the market in 2026.
03:13Logically, there will probably be some overlap between the ID.3 and the electric Golf, as it is unlikely that Volkswagen will abandon the first model after just three years.
03:22However, if the electric Golf 9 does appear in 2022, this will not mean the end of the conventional drive version.
03:36The Golf 8, which was launched in late 2019 with petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid drive, could remain available until at least 2033,
03:45when the European Union plans to de facto ban the sale of new cars with internal combustion engines.
03:55The new version of the Volkswagen will benefit from Rivian's know-how.
03:58Schaefer explained that Audi and Porsche are taking the lead in this and paving the way with vehicles that are set to be released as early as 2027.
04:12When the joint venture was founded earlier this month, the two companies stated that their new electric architecture and software technology will be compatible with all relevant vehicle segments,
04:22from small cars to compact cars.
