00:00Let's go to Jonathan in the city.
00:02What's kind of getting under your skin about the 49er effort yesterday?
00:05888-957-9570.
00:07Hey, Jonathan, what's good?
00:09Thanks for calling.
00:11Hey, what's good?
00:12And this has been true ever since Kyle Shannon's been here.
00:15I don't see quitting the guys, man.
00:17I mean, despite everything that's happened to the team, all his injuries, right?
00:21A lot of teams would have quit, you know, tanked it for next season,
00:24but not Kyle Shannon and 49er squad.
00:27They just continue to fight and next man up.
00:30Unfortunately, some of those guys are just too young, you know,
00:33makes a lot of inexperienced mistakes.
00:35But like I said, man, they just keep fighting.
00:36And even though there's a lot of obstacles that they need to overcome,
00:41if Juwan James would have held on to one of those two bumps that he dropped,
00:46it would have been a different kind of ball game.
00:48They would have grabbed momentum.
00:49And who knows?
00:51Another thing I want to say is I would like to see them in more of a jumbo formation, man.
00:57Make every week a tight, you know, national tight ends Sunday.
01:02Farrell, Tonjes, and Kittle.
01:04As of right now, aside from, you know, McCaffrey, the running back,
01:08the tight ends are officially the 49ers strength of the team.
01:12So use those three tight ends with McCaffrey and maybe one receiver, KB, right?
01:18And let's roll with that.
01:19Because if you can't protect the quarterback,
01:21who's on your roster that could protect the quarterback?
01:25The three tight ends.
01:26And also the tight ends, they're a mismatch, man.
01:29They're faster than the linebacker, bigger than the DB.
01:32So, yeah, man.
01:34And before I go, I just want to say, man, don't be too sad, Niner fans,
01:38because all we need to do is win two more division games and we be in the offs.
01:43Well, and I would also add in, Jonathan, thanks.
01:45I'd add in this weekend, I think this weekend is a very winnable game
01:50and this weekend is a vital game because 6-3 versus 5-4, pretty damn different,
01:58especially with the trade deadline coming up a couple of days after that game gets played.
02:03And I think if you're 6-3, the 49ers are going to have a hard time
02:06not at least trying to do something.
02:09But do not consider this an easy game this weekend.
02:12Jackson Dart is dynamic, he moves really, really well,
02:17and how the hell are you going to rush him?
02:19Because you don't rush anyone.
02:21Well, except for Michael Penix.
02:23Right.
02:23You rushed Michael Penix, but since Nick Bosa's departure,
02:28that is the only game where the quarterback even was aware
02:32that the 49ers had a defensive line.
02:35I think that feels like it's about five games since Nick missed, right?
02:38He went out against Arizona.
02:39Sounds right.
02:40Yeah, they have not even, there's not been a breath on any of the other quarterbacks
02:45except for the Penix game.
02:46And Bryce Huff, yeah.
02:47Bryce Huff was the guy who was awesome in that game.
02:49He was awesome.
02:50And then no Huff and no Bosa, no Warner and all the rest of it.
02:53But you can use it as an excuse or as an example of what's gone wrong.
02:58And Fox had the number, I think it was 2036, total games missed due to injury in the Shanahan era.
03:05And when you think about that number, 2036, and if you look at how many games they've played under Shanahan,
03:12that's about 80 games lost per game.
03:16When you think about how many games lost per game, it's just, it's mind-boggling.
03:21Totally.
03:21And you can talk about that all you want, but it is next man up.
03:25And you've got five more games until the bye.
03:28Five more games.
03:30Can you get to, can you go three and two in the next five?
03:33Can you be eight and five going into the bye?
03:37Sure they can.
03:38And that to me is really.
03:39I mean, they can.
03:41Well, they need to is my point.
03:42If you have, you're five and three, you've got five to go until the bye.
03:46And you've got a Rams game, you've got Arizona, you've got the Giants, you've got Carolina, and you've got Cleveland.
03:52They're not all easy.
03:55No game is easy.
03:56And at Cleveland, a very physical defense at the end of a 13-week run is tough.
04:02But Arizona, at home, you've got the Rams here at home.
04:06You've got Carolina, a team that is in major transition.
04:09So, for me, if you want to talk about, like, is this team a playoff team, you've got to be eight and five going to the bye.
04:15You've got to go three and two in the next five.
04:17I mean, the after-bye schedule is pretty friendly, too.
04:20I know there's a trip to the Colts, but I don't know.
04:24Like, if you want to make it about that five-game stretch, I mean, they only play one team with a winning record in that five-game stretch.
04:31So, yeah, there should be a lot of winnable stuff.
04:33I don't know who's available for the 49ers.
04:35Kyle Shanahan's going to talk here, I think, in about 30, 40 minutes.
04:39It's always scheduled for 3.30, but the Niners sort of do it whenever the hell they want.
04:45Like, they do the Monday thing as if they are a star musician, and you just show up when you freaking show up, and that's it.
04:53And apparently everyone's just supposed to be ready.
04:54But, yeah, about 30, 40 minutes probably they're going to talk, and we'll get the injury update on all of these guys.
05:02We'll get the injury update on Dee Winters and D'Amador Lenore and Sam O and the updates on the guys who have already been on the shelf.
05:10You know, does he say something different with regard to Brock Purdy and Ricky Pearsall?
05:15Does he say something different this time around?
05:17Or is he just going to, eh, Wednesday, well, you know, evaluation sensation, okay, like, all that's going to happen here pretty soon.
05:28So, we'll get that whole thing figured out.
05:30Jonathan said one of the things, though, that I want to respond to.
05:35He's not wrong.
05:36It's totally okay to be excited about this.
05:39I just am not one to get excited about it.
05:42You don't, in my book, you don't get brownie points for trying.
05:49I don't, like, you're a professional football team, and y'all are making wonderful salaries, and you've got a great life, and football is hard, and I know it hurts, and all of these things.
06:01You do not get my respect because all you, like, man, they're playing hard, and they didn't give up.
06:10I, what is this, Saturday afternoon at the park with the eight-year-olds?
06:17You don't get any points for that from me.
06:19That is absolutely 1,000% the expectation and the demand.
06:25If you would like to be a professional athlete, you will always try.
06:29You will always give everything you've got, and you will never give up because that is what the whole industry is made of.
06:36So, yes, the 49ers have never, I've never felt, other than that, other than Chase Young in that game against the Lions in the playoffs,
06:47when he decided to just stand there and watch the whole thing unfold.
06:51Or Devondre Campbell, who absolutely quit in the middle of the game.
06:54He just, well, he wasn't even on the field, but yes, he just.
06:57He literally quit.
06:57He left the team.
06:58Right.
06:59And never came back.
06:59Mid-game.
07:00And never played in the NFL ever again anymore.
07:02So far, he probably won't.
07:03Probably won't.
07:04So, yeah, that's, other than stuff like that, I've never felt like that was something I even needed to think about.
07:10And I don't think fans should have to think about that.
07:13And if you have a situation where your team is not trying or individuals have decided that they're going to check out,
07:20well, then you have a real problem with the coach and you're going to look to make a change almost immediately.
07:25And this team has never undergone that.
07:28The other thing that Jonathan said, and I've been going over my notes all day today and yesterday,
07:32and I totally agree with Jonathan, they did not do, in my opinion, enough to mix it up.
07:39They only had one play the entire game where they had multiple tight ends on the field.
07:44And that was the goal line pass to Tonjes, where they went to 23 personnel, two running backs, three tight ends.
07:50And Tonjes and Kittle both went out, Farrell stayed in and blocked.
07:54That was the only play all game where they had two tight ends.
07:57They didn't do, in my opinion, enough to change it up.
08:02When you're not moving the ball, you have to try something else.
08:05Either you go to the jumbo package with two tight ends and two running backs, or you go into a hurry up.
08:10Not a full-on no huddle hurry up, but you try to change the tempo.
08:14I didn't think that Kyle Shanahan did enough yesterday.
08:17When it's broken, you've got to try something else.
08:20I get that.
08:21I also realize, though, that this is one of these things where the whole plan, the whole game plan,
08:26the whole what the 49ers do, just got disrupted from the jump,
08:32which is the other team plays the time of possession game,
08:36and then you walk out onto the field, and you can't even snap the ball.
08:40To me, if I'm a coach, that's the equivalent of the kid that won't go to bed when it's bedtime.
08:49Oh, yeah.
08:50That's what that is.
08:51I'm sorry.
08:53You sit here and install a game plan for an entire week, okay?
08:59You come in on Monday, you get treatment.
09:02You take your off day on Tuesday.
09:04You practice hard Wednesday.
09:06You practice hard Thursday.
09:07You have a glorified practice-slash-walkthrough on Friday.
09:12Then you pack bags.
09:14You fly to Houston.
09:16You try to get a good night's sleep.
09:18You show up.
09:18You go through all of your warm-ups.
09:21And then kickoff comes on.
09:23And C.J. Stroud and his team run 11 minutes of action and then kick a field goal.
09:29You walk out there onto the field and just start running the wrong way and stepping in the wrong spot.
09:36Formation is incorrect.
09:38Motion is incorrect.
09:39And you just start going backwards for three plays.
09:43Three plays straight.
09:45Get off the field.
09:46What are we doing?
09:47What on earth is that?
09:49And to me, that's a cut.
09:50Like, some people will get mad at the coaches.
09:52Some people will get mad at the players.
09:54I don't really care.
09:55It's a failure of the whole deal.
09:58That is a complete breakdown when you can't even walk out onto the field and conduct a play.
10:06The first play after all that work.
10:10That can't happen.
10:11And it was, to me, it was a signal of what was to come.
10:15Because the whole game plan was in shambles the whole time.
10:18You're playing from behind.
10:19You can't run.
10:21You don't run.
10:22The Houston defense is really good.
10:24You are immediately in a spot where they knew what you were going to do.
10:27And they were going to stop you from doing it.
10:29And then that's where your point for me comes in.
10:32Which is, Kyle Shanahan's bugaboo.
10:35He often struggles to have a curveball.
10:39Yeah, absolutely.
10:41And there was no curveball.
10:43And, you know, the opening possession, as you said, you know, you're on the script.
10:46And it's illegal formation right away.
10:48And then penalty on them, penalty on you.
10:50And it was disjointed.
10:51And you eventually punted away.
10:53And then they took another, what was it, almost four minutes off the clock when they got the ball back.
10:59And they get another field goal on the board.
11:02And so now you have another chance.
11:03And you go three and out again.
11:05You never got into a rhythm, and I understand that, but even in the second half, when you started to get a little bit of a rhythm,
11:11not the first possession where you went three and out again, which happened six times,
11:15but the next possession, you actually were able to get some things happening.
11:19You get the ball back after that.
11:21Let's mix it up.
11:22Let's go up-tempo.
11:23Let's go, you know, big package.
11:25Let's go small package.
11:27Let's do something different.
11:28Because what they were trying to just straight up do was not working.
11:32No, it was not.
11:33But, again, you can put whatever package on the field you want.
11:36If your offensive line is underperforming the way they are right now,
11:40you're not going to have a great chance of getting a whole lot done.
11:43You just aren't.
11:44Yeah, you can try to help them out.
11:46That weakens your weapons, all of the stuff.
11:49So I get it.
11:49I'm with you.
11:50Try something different.
11:51I'm not terribly confident in the way that that matchup particularly went.
11:55The Niner offensive line against the Houston Texans defensive line was a complete mismatch in this football game.
12:03And that much was abundantly clear.
12:05So here's kind of where I've arrived today.
12:08And I wonder what you think about this, what y'all think about this.
12:11We'll take your calls all day long on kind of – it's almost like doing a fan version of what's bugging you.
12:17What's bugging you about the 49ers?
12:19Yeah.
12:198-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-70, Atco Pest Control, blah, blah, blah.
12:24What's bugging you?
12:268-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-70.
12:28And here's where I've arrived.
12:31I think the 49er front office is showing a lack of urgency at a level that suggests to me they clearly don't believe that this is the year.
12:46But that doesn't tick me off because they're right.
12:50They're right.
12:51This isn't the year.
12:52So, I don't want that to sound like I'm giving up.
12:58It doesn't matter what a fan does anyway.
13:00Like, my sweat and tears is not going to lead to wins or losses.
13:05You know me.
13:06I'm a process over result person.
13:08And so, I can find joy in the attempt to do whatever it is the Niners are trying to do this year.
13:15I don't think what the Niners are trying to do this year is win the Super Bowl.
13:19I don't.
13:20The Niners are trying to make the playoffs.
13:23They are trying to get better.
13:25They are trying to put duct tape on all of the holes that have been poked.
13:31And they are trying to build up some of these young players so that they become better players who maybe could win a Super Bowl down the road.
13:40Could they have been a Super Bowl team if they didn't have these major injuries?
13:43Maybe.
13:44Even then, it was doubtful.
13:46But I do not believe that the 49er coaching staff in front office looks at the situation that they are in right now and says,
13:54let's start acting in a way that gives us a chance to win the Super Bowl this year.
14:00I think this group is acting in a way that says, you know what?
14:04This ain't the year.
14:05And unfortunately, they're right.
14:09That's kind of where I've arrived.
14:10And I say that with a 5-3 record in the playoffs right now.
14:15Sure.
14:15And I do think that they can make the playoffs.
14:18I think that they still will make the playoffs.
14:20But to your greater point, I don't think that that means that you're going to go on a run and go to the Super Bowl.
14:25You're not going to have Bosa.
14:26You probably won't have Fred Warner, although he fancies himself as working to get back for January.
14:31We don't know.
14:32Huff should be back.
14:33But your roster is not good enough.
14:35And you said something earlier about the Colts that I want to hit on real quick.
14:38Let's do it.
14:39And process versus results.
14:41And I know the Colts regime has changed.
14:43But 2018, they drafted Quentin Nelson out of Notre Dame as a guard.
14:48He's made the Pro Bowl every year.
14:49He's going to the Hall of Fame.
14:51They used their second round pick that year on their tackle, Braden Smith.
14:55They have, in 2024, a third rounder, a fourth rounder.
14:582022, a third rounder.
15:00Offensive linemen, they've drafted all these guys in the top three rounds.
15:04They still have them.
15:06And they have one of the best offensive lines in football.
15:08And what have the Niners done?
15:09Not that.
15:11So process versus results.
15:13Your process with your offensive line, it's not working.
