00:00I feel bad because Grandy asked us a question
00:02and then he never got to follow up.
00:06Like, do you buy a response?
00:09Or are you holding people's feet to the fire
00:14should the 49ers score fewer points than the Eagles on Sunday?
00:19There's a difference in holding people's feet to the fire
00:22and like Dibs was talking about whose job is on the line.
00:26That doesn't really matter to me.
00:28I'm a Niner fan and I want them to win
00:30and if they lose, no matter the circumstance,
00:32I'm going to be upset.
00:33And I know that you guys say the same thing,
00:36but what you're saying right now,
00:38and I'll allow you guys to kind of say it again
00:40for anybody that's just joining us right now,
00:43but it feels like excuse making ahead of the fact.
00:46It feels like you're going into this game
00:47expecting the Niners to lose.
00:49No, not at all.
00:50Although I do think that that is what most 49er fans think.
00:56I do.
00:57And that's okay.
00:58They're the underdogs.
01:00They're underdogs in the football game.
01:02And a bunch of people's favorite players are hurt.
01:05I don't think you're some sort of crazy like,
01:07this happens in my house a lot.
01:09I wonder if it happens in a lot of your houses.
01:13You know, depending on who you live with
01:15and how people are like fan out or whatever.
01:18I have a daughter who gets very,
01:21very upset at everybody if there is any semblance
01:26of anything other than total confidence
01:29that every play will be awesome.
01:31Didn't she come down your road during the Detroit game?
01:34100%.
01:34They dropped her up at halftime and they were down
01:36and you were like, well, honey, sorry about this.
01:38And she said, you watch your mouth.
01:40She got very upset.
01:41Yeah.
01:41One of my favorite stories.
01:43I'll tell you the exact words that I said.
01:45And you tell me if this is offensive.
01:47Grandy, you can weigh in too,
01:48because this is what we're talking about.
01:49The Niners are down 24-7 at half.
01:53Now, normally, that's like you usually lose that game, right?
01:59They do.
01:59It's not a rule, but like, if you see someone down,
02:03if you just popped into a bar and Oregon,
02:07well, no, see, actually take fandom out of it.
02:10Oregon State and Washington State are playing.
02:14And Washington State's up 24-7.
02:16If you glance at that at a sports bar,
02:18is your first thought,
02:21I think the Beavers are about to come back.
02:24Or are you like,
02:25looks like it's probably Washington State's day.
02:27Well, you didn't do a good job taking my fandom out of it.
02:29No, there's no chance the Beavers come back.
02:31All right, Washington State's playing Idaho.
02:34You know what I mean?
02:35And so all I said to her was,
02:38I think we better start wrapping our heads around the idea.
02:43And all I said was,
02:44is that they're probably not going to be in the Super Bowl this year.
02:48That's all.
02:49That was the state.
02:50Is that an offensive thing to say at halftime?
02:52It is.
02:53Grandy's nodding.
02:54Is that an offense?
02:55Is that a crazy thing to say?
02:57Possibly.
02:58When you're down 17 at the break?
03:00Yes.
03:01With Kyle Shanahan, who never comes back.
03:04And the Lions with an offense that's pretty explosive.
03:06So, I mean, yeah.
03:09You went there and she put you in check.
03:10She was, yeah.
03:12And that's kind of what Grandy's doing now with this talk of,
03:14oh, you know, house money, moral victory.
03:17Isn't it great?
03:17No, no, no.
03:18No house money.
03:19No moral victory.
03:21I use house money as a conduit to arrive at what we did.
03:24And I know it's sports radio,
03:27so for four hours I will say this,
03:28and it will absolutely be misconstrued.
03:30I know that, and that's fine.
03:32What I'm saying is, in my mind,
03:35I go back often to when Fred Warner got hurt
03:40and the Niners lost and fell to 4-2 that day
03:44and Brock Purdy was nowhere to be seen.
03:48And I go back to when the Niners couldn't win two in a row
03:51and they were 6-4.
03:53And we didn't know when Brock Purdy was going to be back.
03:56And we knew Fred wasn't going to be back.
03:57We knew Nick wasn't going to be back.
03:59We knew all of these things.
04:00I go back to those moments,
04:02and I vividly remember not only all of our conversations,
04:06but the thoughts in my head,
04:08which were,
04:09dude, it would be such an incredible accomplishment
04:11if this team could still make the playoffs.
04:14And they did.
04:16So I am very, very filled with gratitude
04:20that we all get to do this this weekend.
04:25That does not mean that at the end,
04:27like I'm going to yell at electronics the same way we all will.
04:31Yeah, you always do.
04:33Like that's, yeah.
04:35I want it now.
04:36I want to do it again next weekend.
04:38Of course.
04:39And it's not like they are insurmountable underdogs.
04:41No.
04:41They're not Carolina at home,
04:43which is the biggest home dog in the history of the playoffs at 10.5.
04:46You're a four-and-a-half point dog at Philly
04:49against a team that is not the same Philly that they were last year
04:53and not the same Philly that they were three years ago
04:56when they knocked you out of the postseason.
04:58This is a Philly team that is really good
05:00and also really bad depending on what day it is.
05:03Right.
05:04Right.
05:04I just, like, I think we end up in this spot as fans
05:11kind of sort of because of the way we do sports
05:13and everybody wants to come at things with strength
05:17and everybody loves to make it about belief
05:19and we believe in everything.
05:22I don't know about that word excuses.
05:26I don't know about that.
05:28I'm not supposed to say that Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, Trent Williams,
05:34George Kittle, and Brock Purdy got hurt?
05:37That's not a part of this story?
05:39It's a part of every team's story.
05:41No, not at this level.
05:42The Eagles didn't have Lane Johnson for a long time.
05:45So that's one person.
05:46Right.
05:46And they didn't have, you know, Jalen Carter.
05:49He missed some games.
05:49And so you could look at every team and do they get injured more?
05:53And is it because of electromagnetic energy?
05:56I don't even want to get into that.
05:57No, don't.
05:58That hook'em.
05:59But, yeah, the Niners have guys who get hurt.
06:01But they've lost foundational pieces for the season.
06:04But they still went out in one game.
06:06Right.
06:07So without those foundational pieces.
06:09Right.
06:09But they often did it by, some people believe it was a soft schedule.
06:13Some will say it was by outscoring people.
06:15I think there's some truth to all of these things.
06:18But the defense has not been good
06:19because it has lost its foundational pieces for the season.
06:22And, by the way, it has lost some, I love, next man up.
06:26Well, that guy's gone, too.
06:28And so is the guy after him in a lot of these cases.
06:31Well, they've got guys in uniforms who get paid to play football.
06:33They do.
06:34Who will be out there.
06:35But I guess that's kind of my point.
06:36Like, some of y'all are marching around being like,
06:39we've got to believe.
06:40No excuses.
06:41And if I went, cool, who's their linebacker?
06:43You don't even know.
06:44It's that one guy.
06:45You don't even know.
06:46If I'm in the grocery store parking lot today,
06:49and everyone's like, no, no, no, bang, bang, Niner game.
06:51We go, cool.
06:52Who's the linebacker?
06:54And you won't see you in the aisles.
07:00But you can ask the same people, like,
07:02who is your defensive tackle?
07:03And they wouldn't know.
07:04Your point is well made, though.
07:06Come on, right?
07:07You've got different people playing,
07:08yet here you are, 12-5, better record than Philly.
07:12And Philadelphia, 11-6, is a team that has had more, like,
07:17losses than they've had, like, high-quality wins.
07:20So it's not like you're going up against a real juggernaut here.
07:24You're going up against a team that I think is vulnerable.
07:27We know that everybody in the playoffs is vulnerable.
07:30Right.
07:30I'm not removing rooting for the Niners in this game.
07:34I know you're not,
07:35but if you want to look at their record without Fred Warner
07:37and their record without Nick Bosa,
07:40those are still winning records.
07:41They've been a winning team without those guys on the field.
07:44Right.
07:44But this is at Philly, and this is the playoffs,
07:48and this is harder.
07:50Like, right?
07:52Philly, you say, okay, the Niners have a better record than Philly.
07:55And a Philly fan would say, well, A, we tanked the last game of the year.
07:59Fine.
07:59And, B, we won the Super Bowl, so we played a first-place schedule.
08:04Yeah.
08:04You played a fourth-place schedule.
08:07Must have been rugged to play the Giants twice,
08:09and a beleaguered Washington team twice.
08:11Those things are real, though.
08:13Sure.
08:13Again, like, those are part of it, too.
08:16So that's what's funny to me.
08:18Like, if you say something that's sort of supportive of your team,
08:21then that's an excuse.
08:23But if you say something that is, quite frankly,
08:26I believe the exact same thing, but it's critical,
08:29then it's celebrated in sports media,
08:32such as, as Steine has been doing all year,
08:35schedule's a joke, which you've been like, it's actually not.
08:40It was tougher than we thought going in.
08:42The Bears were better.
08:44Jacksonville was better.
08:45Houston was better.
08:46So if you say schedule is a joke,
08:48that is an attempt to explain the 49ers' story this year.
08:53Is it not?
08:54In part, yeah.
08:55Absolutely.
08:56Then so is foundational pieces are out for lengthy periods of time,
09:02and in some cases, the year.
09:03That is an attempt to explain part of the experience they're having,
09:08and to me, they have had, obviously, actually by metrics,
09:12this is mathematical fact,
09:14more of those lost games than any team in the NFL,
09:17yet they remain 12-5.
09:19We get to do this this weekend.
09:22At least.
09:23Right.
09:24Maybe more.
09:24We'll go out there and win.
09:26Like, I look at what they've done without those foundational pieces,
09:30and they've won games.
09:31So it's not like they were 9-1.
09:34They lost both, so they lost Warner,
09:36and boy, they limped into the end of it,
09:38and they barely made it in.
09:39They lost them early,
09:40and Kittle ended up playing 11 of the 17.
09:43He missed, I think, 5,
09:44and then he missed one more.
09:46But when he was out,
09:48Ton just stepped up,
09:49and you won games.
09:50And when Bosa went out,
09:51you brought in Keon White,
09:53you brought in Cleland Furrell,
09:54and you won games.
09:55And Fred Warner was out,
09:56and you had Dee,
09:58you had Tatum,
09:59now you've got Kendricks and Wallow,
10:01and, I mean,
10:01who knows if they're going to be good enough,
10:03but when you lost those guys,
10:05you still won games.
10:07Yes.
10:07That's my point.
10:08Yes.
10:08You can use it as an excuse,
10:10and we can look back on Monday,
10:11and if they lose whatever to whatever,
10:14we can look back in the season and say,
10:15you know what?
10:1612-5, 12-6,
10:18that was better than I thought they would have done,
10:20considering all of the adversity they faced,
10:22but it doesn't mean going into the game
10:24that I'm automatically thinking,
10:25like,
10:26you're going to lose because you've got Kendricks and Wallow.
10:28No, no, no.
10:28There's no,
10:29there's no,
10:30gosh,
10:30you're so right.
10:31That does really sound like a law firm.
10:33Totally.
10:33Every time you say it,
10:34Kendricks and Wallow,
10:35can I help you?
10:35Probably not.
10:39I'm sorry,
10:39Mr. Kendricks is unavailable right now.
10:41He's on the pup list.
10:42Mr. Kendricks is unavailable.
10:44He's running down the field.
10:46He's chasing somebody.
10:47Yeah,
10:48Mr. Wallow will be with you shortly
10:49as soon as he's signed off the practice squad.
10:51I'm trying to say this
10:56without even talking about the result of the game.
10:59I don't know what's going to happen.
11:00I'm not saying they can't win.
11:02I'm just,
11:04I guess,
11:05I'm surprised they're here.
11:08How about that?
11:09Like,
11:09does that,
11:09does that feel better?
11:12I guess.
11:13Like,
11:13I'm actually not surprised they're here.
11:16I am.
11:16Yeah.
11:16I am.
11:17Like,
11:17if you,
11:18and again,
11:18I guess,
11:19I guess maybe it comes down to also like,
11:21are you,
11:22are you zeroing in with a really kind of fine view
11:24or are you,
11:25are you zooming out?
11:27If you zero in
11:28and,
11:31and you watch the 49ers every week,
11:33maybe you weren't surprised
11:34because they had a winning record all year.
11:36They were in it.
11:36They had a shot.
11:37Yeah.
11:37Like the path,
11:38you saw the path.
11:40It was there all year.
11:41If you zoom out,
11:42I do believe,
11:44maybe you're right.
11:45Maybe you wouldn't have said this.
11:47I do believe that if I had thrown out these facts at the summit,
11:50that I think most people would have said,
11:52well,
11:52that team's not going to the playoffs.
11:55I,
11:55I believe that.
11:56I believe if I said,
11:57I said,
11:58no,
11:58no,
11:58no,
11:58we're taking Bosa.
11:59I'll take Warner.
12:00I'm going to take a lot of Kittle.
12:02I'm going to take a lot of Purdy.
12:03I'm going to take a little Trent.
12:05I'm going to take,
12:05I'm going to take,
12:08right.
12:08I'm going to,
12:08well,
12:09what even is that?
12:09The usual half a year of Purcell.
12:11Second,
12:11second year.
12:12Yeah.
12:12By the way,
12:13when we get to the playoffs,
12:14I'm also going to take Fred's backup.
12:16Can't have him anymore either.
12:17Both of them,
12:18maybe.
12:18Right.
12:19Like if I had said,
12:20I believe if I had said that at the summit,
12:23most people would have been,
12:24well,
12:24that team's not going to the playoffs.
12:26Yeah.
12:26And I probably wouldn't have been one because if you look at the way things
12:30shook out in,
12:31in the schedule with the second half of the year with the Giants and Arizona and
12:35Carolina and Cleveland and Tennessee was a laughing stock.
12:39Those are all games that I would look at and think,
12:42you know,
12:42even if you had Mac Jones and no Fred,
12:44no Nick,
12:45you should still win those games.
12:46Those teams are terrible.
12:48Well,
12:49but even when you don't have those guys,
12:50your team is not terrible,
12:51but you got Shanahan dog.
12:53No doubt.
12:54But you've also even admitted like some of that is the perception of what
12:58these teams were going to be before the year.
13:00And some of them weren't that right.
13:02You had to play Seattle twice.
13:04Right.
13:04When you're looking into before the year,
13:06you're like,
13:06yeah,
13:07they're okay.
13:08The Giants were the Giants.
13:09Cleveland was Cleveland.
13:11Bears were not the Bears.
13:12Correct.
13:13But like Tennessee was Tennessee.
13:14For sure.
13:15New Orleans was New Orleans.
13:16No doubt.
13:16So there were,
13:17it was kind of a mixed bag.
13:18And as I mentioned before,
13:19going into the year,
13:20the teams you faced had a four 15 win percentage the previous year.
13:24And they wound up this year at four 95.
13:26Yeah.
13:26Better.
13:27Much better.
13:27Not great.
13:2820% better though.
13:30Yeah.
13:30So all you schedule Sam people,
13:32their schedule was a joke coming in,
13:34but Chicago,
13:35Jacksonville,
13:36Houston,
13:36Seattle,
13:37all better than we thought.
13:39Grandy wants to weigh.
13:40I can tell you,
13:40I've never,
13:41we've never done a show before where grand grandy is like pounding his head
13:44on the,
13:45on the microphone.
13:46Because I can tell that I can tell you don't like this.
13:51Granny way in.
13:52No,
13:52I,
13:52I absolutely don't like it.
13:53So you're talking about how like expectations have reset because of all
13:58the injuries.
13:58No question.
13:59That's absolutely fair.
14:00Like,
14:01so I,
14:01I have pace in here in our producer studio,
14:03my,
14:03my season predictions,
14:04and this was made before the season began.
14:06And I had the Niners winning 11 games.
14:08So did I.
14:09So did I.
14:09I haven't going 11 and six.
14:10Yeah.
14:11And that's with,
14:11you know,
14:12I got the nine.
14:12Come on.
14:13Let me fly.
14:15Anyway.
14:15And that's with,
14:16you know,
14:17as we make predictions before a season,
14:19you expect like,
14:20all right,
14:20average injury issues,
14:21right?
14:22Like you don't expect this.
14:23So if you're going off of what I expected,
14:26they exceeded that wind total that I thought,
14:28and they had way more injuries than I thought.
14:30So you're absolutely right.
14:31Like given that,
14:32what happened once all the injuries occur,
14:34specifically like post Fred Warner injury in Tampa,
14:37they have wildly exceeded my expectations.
14:39And I didn't really expect them to make the playoffs,
14:42but my expectations can reset again.
14:44And once they go into week 18,
14:46with a chance to be the one seed at home against the Seahawks,
14:50my expectations have been reset a second time.
14:53Okay.
14:53And now I'm going to be really disappointed if they don't even win a
14:56playoff game.
14:57That's fine.
14:57And,
14:58and you know what?
14:58Maybe,
14:59maybe that's the word we should focus in on because when you say it the
15:05same way,
15:05like when we're talking,
15:06your shoulders get tight,
15:08mine get tight.
15:09When you use the word expectations,
15:11I am completely comfortable with hope.
15:14I am beyond comfortable with hope.
15:17We should all watch Shawshank redemption together this week.
15:20Um,
15:21hope,
15:22hope is what keeps everything going.
15:25Um,
15:25my expectations are,
15:27are not terribly high for this 49er playoff run.
15:32My expectations were this,
15:34get to this and then we'll go from there.
15:37But what are they Sunday?
15:38My expectations.
15:39Are you expecting them to win?
15:40Uh,
15:40I'll let you know tomorrow.
15:41Okay.
15:42Cause the pick is in.
15:43Well,
15:43but they could,
15:43they could lose and you could still,
15:45you know what I mean?
15:45Like they could lose and I could still cover if I took the Niners at four
15:48and a half.
15:49Right.
15:49But honestly,
15:50the more I've thought about it today,
15:52doing all the research about who Philly actually is,
15:56I'm a little bit more bullish on their chances.
15:58And I,
15:59I can,
15:59I can break it down for you as we go.
16:01I agree.
16:01Actually,
16:02I think there's some key things that we should pass along to people here
16:05with it.
16:05We'll do coming up at three o'clock that I'm with you.
16:08Um,
16:08I am having a optimism is update.
16:11It might just be Thursday.
16:13I can't tell.
16:13Sometimes Thursday,
16:14well,
16:16I was out of migraine yesterday.
16:17Now I don't.
16:18So like today is just freaking awesome,
16:20but like that,
16:22that's maybe grandy.
16:24That's the,
16:25at the core.
16:25And I don't know exactly dibs might be somewhere in between the two of us,
16:29but that's at the core of,
16:30of what I'm talking about.
16:32And I have no issue.
16:33If you want to have expectations,
16:36go ahead,
16:37sit down on Sunday at one 30 and be like,
16:39we're freaking doing this.
16:41You know what I mean?
16:42Make popcorn and let's go.
16:44I don't care,
16:45but I am going to approach Sunday.
16:49And,
16:49and,
16:50and if this sounds foofy and weak to you,
16:53then that's false.
16:54I don't care.
16:55I am.
16:56I am so thrilled.
16:59This game is happening.
17:01I think this is awesome.
17:04This is awesome that we get to do a whole week of playoff stuff.
17:09And we get to go find a,
17:10I love the question,
17:11where are you watching the game?
17:12You know,
17:13like we get to do that and we might get more,
17:17but I don't,
17:19I don't like,
17:20if you're going to tell me,
17:21grandy,
17:22that you said 11 wins before the year,
17:24and then all of this stuff happens and then they actually exceed those,
17:30your,
17:31your pre-injury expectations,
17:33but then all of these realities,
17:36they sit here and then you go into this weekend,
17:39as a road dog.
17:41And I don't know,
17:42let's just say it's a really good football game.
17:44Let's say they do lose 20 to 17.
17:47And are,
17:47are you really telling me that you're going to come out of that game and be
17:51like stupid Niners?
17:52I do think that when you talk about like what has happened,
17:56you also have to add in the positive,
17:57which is Mac Jones,
17:59the backup quarterback was the best backup quarterback in football.
18:02Christian McCaffrey had one of the most touchiest seasons in history and is going to maybe win OPOY.
18:09He stayed healthy the whole year.
18:11He was awesome.
18:12Jake Tonjes came in as a backup and was great.
18:14Your offensive line had injuries,
18:16but the guys who came in didn't totally give up the ship.
18:20And so there are a lot of positives that you also have to highlight of things that actually happened this season.
18:26Like the bad,
18:27sure.
18:27We all know the bad,
18:28but some of the good that came out of it,
18:30like Demarcus Robinson,
18:31he got off suspension and he was mostly good.
18:34Your special teams was amazing compared to last year.
18:39Like,
18:39so these are all things that we also have to remember,
18:41like in the course of the 17.
18:43Acho came on with Steining Goose and he is a voter for coach of the year.
18:47And he said publicly that he still voted for Kyle.
18:51Oh,
18:51he's a voter.
18:52He's a voter.
18:52You voting?
18:53He is.
18:54Okay.
18:54And he voted for Kyle.
18:55I love it.
18:56To win coach of the year.
18:57So,
18:58you know what I mean?
18:59Like we just got a text on the Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line about
19:03heads better roll on this offense if they lose.
19:06Yep.
19:06Whose head?
19:07Like,
19:08whose head?
19:10Like,
19:10I guess here's where I'll challenge y'all.
19:14Go back to the halfway point of the season.
19:18Not all of you,
19:19because I know a lot of you are with me.
19:21I can see.
19:22I can see your comments.
19:23A lot of you are with me.
19:25And some of you aren't.
19:26That's the mark with a C people.
19:29You were lying.
19:32You were a bunch of liars at the halfway point.
19:34You were lying.
19:35You're calling me a liar.
19:38Yeah.
19:39Well,
19:39no,
19:39because you're not,
19:40you're not,
19:40your take is not what his take is.
19:43Your take.
19:44No,
19:44you're sitting somewhere.
19:45I can't.
19:46I'm supposed to sit here and take this?
19:48I can't actually put a finger on exactly where you're at yet.
19:52Where I'm at is.
19:53You've been a little like,
19:55it's a little.
19:56I've been ironclad.
19:57Like,
19:57no matter what has happened with Shanahan,
20:00the laminated play sheet,
20:02Mack Jones,
20:03and that schedule,
20:04you still should be a playoff team.
20:05I never got off that.
20:07But,
20:07but.
20:07Ever.
20:08Right,
20:08but should win this weekend.
20:10Eh.
20:11Okay,
20:11so that's a little different.
20:14Well,
20:14should when you're a four and a half pack dog.
20:16That's a little different.
20:16Why are your hands flying around?
20:18It's not about what you guys are talking about.
20:20It's not about,
20:21it's not that,
20:22that texture.
20:23Thanks for listening.
20:24It's not about heads should roll.
20:25It's not about your reaction to the game.
20:28What is it then?
20:28It's about going into the game with this just happy to be here mentality.
20:33That's not what it's about.
20:34You guys are treating this like it's Tulane going into Ole Miss or James Madison going into Oregon.
20:39You're not a 30 point underdog.
20:41Who are you talking to,
20:41you guys?
20:42The two of you.
20:43That room.
20:43The two of you are not on the team.
20:47I'm so sorry to break this to you.
20:51What?
20:52None of us used a weed.
20:53You're not on the team.
20:55So the,
20:56the mindset that you have on your couch Sunday has no effect on this football game.
21:03So don't,
21:05please,
21:05if you're not happy with the way I'm fanning,
21:09do you,
21:11do you,
21:13I will.
21:14You can,
21:14you can put eye black on if you want.
21:17You can throw a remote.
21:20You can take the paint off of your wall.
21:21Full pads on.
21:22Go for it.
21:24Knock yourselves out.
21:25Then you're not allowed to be as happy as we are on Monday if the Niners win.
21:29I can do whatever the hell I want.
21:31We believe a little more than you,
21:33so we deserve to be happier than you.
21:34I'm happy right now.
21:36And it's pissing you off.
21:37Like that's,
21:38you all lied.
21:41You lied.
21:41If at the halfway point,
21:43you said,
21:44I just hope we can make the playoffs.
21:46You lied.
21:49Grandy.
21:50You,
21:50you lied.
21:51I pulled the goo.
21:52I reacted to new information.
21:55That's called,
21:55that's called being a flip flopper,
21:57which he was called earlier today on the show.
22:00You lied.
22:00Your expectations didn't change when their one went away from being the one seed in the NFC.
22:04A home game.
22:05Yours didn't change.
22:06Against a team they already beat.
22:07Yours didn't change when Fred's foot was going south and the other one was going north.
22:10I already told you it did,
22:11but it can,
22:11it can change a second time.
22:13Okay.
22:14I,
22:14fine.
22:15I am only allowed to do this show with my brain.
22:18I can't do your opinion.
22:21Like.
22:22You could,
22:22it's written right in front of you.
22:23That's right.
22:24That's right.
