00:008-8-9-5-7-9-5-7. Here's what I want to ask everybody, you know, especially you Niner fans out there.
00:06What are you worried about? What worries you right now?
00:11About the season?
00:12Yeah, like, again, I say this to you all the time. I try to figure out what's echo chamber and what's real.
00:20But, like, are y'all optimistic about the Niners or not? I'm not telling you you have to be.
00:25We all know that there are questions. We all know that there are things going on right now.
00:32Wide receiver room. Oh, no. Okay. I get it.
00:36But what exactly is it that y'all are worried about when it comes to the 49ers?
00:42And here was the inspiration for this question.
00:45And he's not right on all of these. Nobody's right on all of anything.
00:49But Dan Graziano wrote an article on ESPN.
00:52Potential surprises for 32 teams. And here's the way he wrote it.
00:56He went through every team. And with each team, there was, like, a headline of, like, don't be surprised if...
01:03Yeah.
01:04And then he would fill in the gap. Now, the real funny one today is the Cowboy one.
01:08Ready for this? Don't be surprised if...
01:12The Cowboys call Micah Parsons bluff.
01:15Yeah.
01:16Oops.
01:17They didn't call that bluff. They traded him.
01:19Yeah. Yeah.
01:23But go around the league.
01:25You know, Washington Commanders.
01:28Don't be surprised if Debo Samuel gets some work at running back.
01:32Right. I wouldn't be surprised.
01:34So, that's kind of what he does.
01:36Yeah, but, I mean, that's what he did with the Niners.
01:38And he did it a lot more when they were running back needy.
01:42I don't think Washington sees themselves as running back needy.
01:45So much so that they just got rid of their No. 1 running back.
01:48Yeah, but that's what Debo does.
01:49I mean, that's one of his difference-making skills is the ability to get the ball in the jet sweep or just line up back there and run it.
01:55Detroit Lions.
01:56Don't be surprised if...
01:58Jameer Gibbs is the top-scoring fantasy running back.
02:03I like that.
02:03I mean, it's always been kind of a job share.
02:06But he's better than David Montgomery, and he tends to get more opportunities than Montgomery.
02:12Minnesota Vikings.
02:13Don't be surprised if...
02:14Jordan Mason leads the team in rushing.
02:18Yeah.
02:18That'd be fun.
02:20You got any other teams you want to throw at me, and I'll tell you what their don't-be-surprised-if is?
02:25Sure.
02:25I know the Niners one is a little further down, but...
02:28Uh-huh.
02:29What about the Rams?
02:30Don't be surprised if Matthew Stafford is in traction?
02:33Don't be surprised if...
02:35Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has to start at some point.
02:38Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised.
02:39Okay.
02:39That would be no surprise.
02:40What about Seattle?
02:41What is their don't-be-surprised-if?
02:44Don't be surprised if...
02:45Their defense keeps them in the playoff race.
02:48Yeah, I'll buy that.
02:48People like their defense this year.
02:50And their head coach is a defensive-minded guy, and Sam Darnold is not built to win a lot of 38-37 games anyway.
02:58Arizona Cardinals.
02:59Don't be surprised if...
03:00Tight end Trey McRide is their leading receiver.
03:03He was amazing last year.
03:05He's incredible.
03:05Yep.
03:06But this is also a way of saying, like...
03:08Marvin Harrison Jr.
03:09I'm not sure about Marvin Harrison Jr.
03:11Not sure if he's great.
03:12All right, do you want me to do the Niner one?
03:14Do the Niners.
03:16Don't be surprised if...
03:19The 49ers end up back in the Super Bowl.
03:21You know, I would not be surprised.
03:23And I don't think you would be either.
03:25I definitely wouldn't be, but that's how my brain works.
03:28Yes, but honestly, if you took it outside of your, do you have to be such a Homer brain,
03:33and just looked at it from a number of different angles, I think that we would agree that they should be...
03:39They should be a playoff team.
03:41If they're not in the playoffs, I would be disappointed.
03:43Yeah, like it's not...
03:43If you want to do the hope versus disappointment or expectations.
03:46It's not a catch-all.
03:47Like, I would be surprised if the Giants ended up in the World Series.
03:50I would be surprised if the Warriors ended up in the NBA Finals.
03:53I would not be surprised if the 49ers ended up in the Super Bowl.
03:56But it's sort of like, it begs this question.
04:01Last year at this time, everybody was running around with the same phrase.
04:07And that I always reject.
04:09Super Bowl or bust.
04:12Super Bowl or bust.
04:13Nobody's Super Bowl or busting this year.
04:16I don't hear that this year.
04:17You just, you had it wrong last year.
04:19What do you mean I had it wrong?
04:20This year is Super Bowl or try again.
04:22No, they're always not.
04:23Last year was Super Bowl or bust.
04:24No, it wasn't.
04:25And if you look at it, they busted that team up.
04:27They have about 15 players from that team that are no longer here.
04:32Mainstays and guys, they busted the team up.
04:34That had nothing to do with not making the Super Bowl.
04:36That had everything to do with, first of all, Brock Purdy needed a contract.
04:40Perhaps.
04:40If they would have went to the Super Bowl and won it, they would not have had so much of an exodus.
04:45No, but their defense sucked.
04:47They broke it up, not because they didn't make the Super Bowl.
04:49Because they sucked.
04:51They needed a new coordinator.
04:52They needed, and some of it financially was, you get rid of certain guys.
04:56I reject the phrase because the phrase is, it's kind of funny to me.
05:01It's the phrase that pays.
05:02And it paid last year.
05:03It means if you don't go to the Super Bowl, you're going to bust this thing up.
05:06No, but that's what happened.
05:07But that's not why they did it.
05:08Well, you don't know that.
05:10I actually would totally disagree with the idea that they busted the thing up.
05:13They busted the thing wide open.
05:15Not at all.
05:15Debo, gone.
05:16Yeah.
05:17Long snapper, gone.
05:18Hunter, gone.
05:19Coach, still there.
05:20Quarterback, two coordinators.
05:22Two coordinators, gone.
05:23Yeah.
05:24Quarterback, coach, into retirement.
05:27Hufanga and Greenlaw.
05:28And two coordinators is not right.
05:30Devondre Campbell.
05:31We know who the offensive coordinator is.
05:33They lost to Devondre Campbell.
05:34Super Bowl or bust.
05:35When I hear Super Bowl or bust, I believe what you're saying is, this should go to the
05:41Super Bowl or else the coach is in trouble.
05:43They're not in the Super Bowl.
05:45They didn't even win seven games.
05:46And the coach is clearly not in trouble at all.
05:49Super Bowl or try again is absolutely correct.
05:53That's what this year is.
05:54Yeah.
05:54No.
05:55This year you've got a bunch of guys who are young and under contract.
05:57So if you don't make the Super Bowl, all those guys are coming back.
06:00Unless they're not any good.
06:02That's what happened this year.
06:03That's not what happened last year.
06:04It is.
06:04Absolutely it is.
06:05They busted the thing up.
06:06The core is the same people and you know it.
06:09Like how far out do you want to go in the core?
06:11Was Dre Greenlaw not a part of the core?
06:13He wasn't barely even on the team.
06:15He didn't play last year.
06:16He played.
06:17No, he didn't.
06:17He played like two games.
06:19I was there when he played.
06:20Exactly.
06:20He actually played.
06:21He played for a half.
06:22That's not a core player anymore.
06:24That's the point.
06:25They busted it up.
06:26No, they didn't.
06:27Hufanga, gone.
06:28Debo Samuel was not part of the core?
06:29Debo Samuel was.
06:31But that had nothing to do with losing.
06:33That had to do with finances.
06:34It had to do with Brandon Ayuk's injury.
06:36It had to do with his poor performance.
06:38It had to do with him slapping long snappers.
06:40But it had to do with losing too because if you would have won, then all these things
06:44wouldn't have been predicated on busting it up, which is what they did.
06:48I mean, again, you can have your opinion on that.
06:50I have mine on that.
06:52The core and the coaching staff are largely the same people.
06:55Salah is the big addition to this whole thing.
06:58And the bottom line for me is I'm trying to take this conversation to a spot of like,
07:04why not this year?
07:07Right.
07:07I don't see why not.
07:08Why not those same expectations this year?
07:14Just because you didn't have questions last year, you actually did.
07:18We just didn't know them.
07:19We didn't have Christian McCaffrey as it turned out last year.
07:22And you didn't have Trent Williams and you didn't have Charverius Mooney Ward.
07:26And you didn't have a defensive coordinator that knew his head from a hole in the ground.
07:31Sure.
07:31It's like, sorry, Nick.
07:32This year you have questions.
07:34They're just different questions.
07:35And like, are your linebackers going to be good enough?
07:39And can you stop the run with these youngsters, these young pups in the front?
07:43We don't have answers yet.
07:44The questions are just different from last year.
07:46Yeah, but last year we didn't have those questions and we should have.
07:49Because as it turns out, the people that we thought were good weren't.
07:52And they couldn't stop the run.
07:53They were terrible at it.
07:54There's no way they could be worse.
07:55Well, even in the opener, we thought it was going to be Christian McCaffrey running the football.
07:58And it actually, it wasn't.
08:00We found out about 20 minutes before kick.
08:02Yeah, Grandy, what do you got?
08:03Some news from Ian Rappaport of NFL Network.
08:06Free agent wide receiver Kendrick Bourne is visiting the Niners on Monday and the Commanders on Tuesday.
08:12A source said, the framework of a deal is in place for both, just in case.
08:18Interesting.
08:19For both?
08:20For both teams.
08:21Interesting.
08:21I guess it's up to Kendrick to decide.
08:23Yeah.
08:23Why does Washington want Kendrick Bourne?
08:25Adam Peters, the former 49er.
08:28Sure, but I see them as relatively deep at that position right now.
08:35Maybe I'm wrong.
08:36I mean, they just broke off McLaurin.
08:38They've got Debo on the team.
08:40I'm going to pull up their depth chart.
08:43They've got a couple of young guys I know that they like.
08:46There's one kid named Jalen Lane.
08:48They've got Christian McCaffrey's little brother is on the team.
08:52I mean, it's not like a terribly deep group.
08:55Is Noah Brown still on that group?
08:57I think he's maybe dealing with a little bit of an injury.
09:01But, oh, interesting.
09:03Okay.
09:03What's your read on that with regard to the Niners?
09:06My read is they would love to have him.
09:08And I don't know what the deal is relative to what Washington's deal is.
09:11But the very fact that you've already signed one, you traded for another,
09:16and now you are potentially coveting a third,
09:20this just gives me more reason to think that Jawan Jennings may not play for the 49ers this year.
09:26Yeah.
09:26Yeah.
09:26Yeah.
