00:00I've kind of come all the way back around to, somebody asked me on Monday, and I said,
00:04oh, they're going to get smashed.
00:06They're going to get smashed by Seattle.
00:08We've talked to experts.
00:09I've done a lot of the research, including what I shared yesterday about each team having
00:1317 drives in the two games this year, and their drive stats are almost identical.
00:19By the way, I don't even get offended by this stuff.
00:22You thought, and how did I?
00:23I don't either.
00:24You, no, I didn't think, I wouldn't have picked the Eagles to cover last week.
00:31You did.
00:32Yeah.
00:33So you thought the Niners were going to get, air quotes, smashed last week.
00:38Yeah.
00:38I thought they were probably going to lose.
00:41Right.
00:41I thought the number six was disrespectful.
00:45I thought that was too much.
00:48But, yeah, like, it's okay.
00:51And this thing's still sitting at seven, right?
00:53I don't, by the way, I don't think you're a crazy person and an awful person if you think
00:57that the, if you think the Niners are going to lose tomorrow.
01:00It's okay.
01:01It's okay.
01:02Seven's a big number.
01:03Yeah.
01:03For two teams that don't really score against each other.
01:06I'm not even talking about gambling.
01:08No, I'm just saying that.
01:08I'm just like, if you think the Niners are going to lose tomorrow, I don't know, like,
01:12you're with the majority of the world.
01:15I think if you look at how these two games have gone so far, you can rightly think that it's
01:21going to be a close game, close-ish.
01:23Sure.
01:23Even the 14-3 game was kind of close.
01:26And then the first game, 17-13, it didn't have to be that close.
01:30In fact, it wasn't even 14-3.
01:32It was 13-3.
01:32Fine.
01:33Yeah.
01:33It doesn't even really matter.
01:35I mean.
01:35Well, it was closer.
01:36Fine.
01:37The point is the point.
01:38I get your point.
01:39I agree with you.
01:40Right.
01:40I agree with you.
01:41So me riding a higher lower three weeks ago has nothing to do with what happens this Saturday.
01:45You have no belief.
01:48So just keep yelling, game day Burma box.
01:52I don't even want to ever hear you say, bang, bang, Niner gang ever again.
01:55I got to get my daughter to say that.
01:56You're out of the gang.
01:57Yeah.
01:58Why don't you put that in the system?
01:59You already have it.
02:01Lucas Grandy, he's got Mila saying, bang, bang, Niner gang.
02:04My three-year-old, yeah.
02:05It's really cute.
02:06You need to put it in the system.
02:07It's a little screechy and obnoxious.
02:09I don't care.
02:09Of course it's screechy and obnoxious.
02:11That's the point.
02:12If I send it to them, they'll cry and whine about how I show up green or whatever color on your phone.
02:18Just like your kid saying fade when he was playing golf, even though no one could see it in the video.
02:22You need to email it to me, Dibs.
02:24It was just, listen, anytime I hear anybody use the word fade, sue me.
02:30That's where my brain goes.
02:32So when someone's yelling at a golf ball to turn right and they start going fade, fade, fade, like boy, next thing you know, I'm like, ooh, that's like Friday of our show.
02:42That's all.
02:43But yeah, get Miley in there with the bang, bang, Niner gang.
02:46And if you can get her to say game day Burba box, that'd be even better.
02:49Yeah.
02:50See if we can't get a little something out of that.
02:52I hope y'all were listening yesterday or you won't understand what we're even talking about.
02:55The teams, since 2000, the teams off a bye, which is, Seattle would be one of those.
03:02They are 63 and 27, which is a 70% win rate.
03:06Well, they're supposed to be the best.
03:08But 30% of the time, the team that had played and is on the road, they win the game.
03:12Yeah.
03:13So it wouldn't be that outlandish.
03:15Last time the Niners were in this game on the road, they won it.
03:18Green Bay was the one seed.
03:19Right.
03:20With Hufong.
03:22That was, they were the one seed.
03:23Last year, Washington was a nine and a half point dog at Detroit and they won by two touchdowns.
03:28They motorboated Detroit.
03:30I think, and you're talking about a division matchup, the third time they've matched up.
03:35They know each other well.
03:36Brock's never lost up there.
03:38I throw all that out.
03:39Seven point favorite.
03:41Okay.
03:41You can, you can sell me on you think Seattle's better, but the whole, like, we got the one
03:46seed, we got a week off.
03:48I actually, I'm like, yeah, whatever.
03:51Throw that out.
03:52I just don't, as soon as people start getting hit in the face, whatever, whatever.
03:58And we have seen the conversation about rest versus rust happens every year.
04:04It happens every year.
04:05Baseball people get mad at that every year now when there's a team that's sitting around
04:10and then they show up and they look like they're out of sync.
04:14And believe you me, if Seattle scores three points in the first half, I promise you the
04:19studio analysts that happened, oh boy, I don't know, they look kind of rusty, guys.
04:24Looks like they haven't played in a week.
04:26But the Niners, six days ago, they were in Philadelphia.
04:29And so they're just game ready.
04:31Like, that's the stupid stuff that we're, like, that's tradition, unlike any other.
04:36Right.
04:37Right.
04:37I will say this, the Niners scored on their opening drive against Philadelphia.
04:42They've done that eight times this year.
04:43And when they do that, they're 8-0.
04:45Yep.
04:45So there's that.
04:46Including at Seattle, week one.
04:47Including against the New York Giants when the Giants scored first, the Niners got the
04:51ball and they scored.
04:52They went on to win that game.
04:54So Colts game two was just like that.
04:55If they get the ball and they score the first time they get the ball, they haven't lost.
04:59So there is that.
05:00888-957-9570.
05:02Let's take some calls.
05:03Don in Concord.
05:04Hi, Don.
05:05Thank you for chiming in here on Willard and Dibs.
05:10Yeah, I had to wait a minute.
05:11I'm out here on the back patio in Concord.
05:13Feels like summertime, man.
05:15It's beautiful.
05:15Beautiful day.
05:16No doubt.
05:17Rain, rain, go away.
05:19Rain, rain, go away.
05:20Pierce Hall's on the way.
05:23He's going to run down the middle.
05:25Tongass will be in the middle.
05:27He used to say, get it in the middle.
05:29Tomorrow, it's Tongass in the middle.
05:31And they're going to use Robinson as a lure.
05:35He'll get his three catches.
05:37And the running back, he'll get his three touchdowns.
05:42And I'm giving the game ball to Tongass tomorrow at the end of the game.
05:46What do you think, Mark?
05:47Well, yeah.
05:48Tom, thanks.
05:51I don't think Kristen McCaffrey is going to score three touchdowns.
05:53I don't know if there's going to be three touchdowns in this game.
05:55But the idea of Tongass playing a big role tomorrow, yeah, I mean, that's incredibly believable.
06:03In fact, I would almost lean toward it as being more likely than not.
06:07Whenever George Kittle didn't play, Jake Tongass became a very big part of the offense.
06:12This offense uses that.
06:13They use the tight end a lot, the misdirection and all of that.
06:19And so, like, sure, I think Jake Tongass is going to be very, very involved here.
06:25I think it's going to be a high usage game for use check.
06:28It's going to be use check usage.
06:30And you're going to have to have him play in a pseudo tight end spot because you don't throw it to Farrell a lot.
06:36So I think you're going to see a lot of formations where use check is kind of in that wing spot and they're going to look to throw it to him.
06:41I got Farrell higher than half a catch, though.
06:44So, um, wow.
06:47I mean, maybe that's a I don't even know if that's the actual line.
06:50I don't even know if we can look that up.
06:52But I don't even know if I don't even know if I don't know if Farrell makes it to underdog and prize.
07:00But he might this time just based on the personnel that's going to be out there.
07:04The tough thing about the Seattle defense is they don't really do anything other than line up and come try to get you.
07:11In other words, they don't try to do a lot of tricky things.
07:14They don't blitz very often.
07:16They come at you with four, which worked a couple of weeks ago, and then they just rally up and they tackle you.
07:21So you're going to have to be able to make plays and then beat tackles, break tackles in order to make big plays.
07:28I'm trying to look this up right now here.
07:30I'm on the I'm on the Niner Seahawk game.
07:35Let's see.
07:36I do not see.
07:38Yeah, I do not see him.
07:40Yeah, he did not.
07:41He did not make the cut.
07:43So anyway, maybe I can do a deeper dive on that coming up here in a little bit.
07:48Let's go to Paul in Oakland.
07:50Hi, Paul.
07:51Thank you for calling.
07:51What's up?
07:53You got it.
07:54Good afternoon, guys.
07:54So let me let me start off by kind of laying out what I consider to be kind of an axiom for NFL success.
08:02My take is you got to have owner, owner, ownership, head coach and quarterback in place.
08:11They've got to be solid, competent, functional.
08:14And if you look at all the teams that are in the playoffs or hunting around it, those three things are generally those boxes and checked.
08:25You check a couple of the three, maybe now going beyond that to mark what you've been saying to your points.
08:33The last few days, the offensive line becomes the next most crucial element in allowing a team to succeed.
08:43So with those things kind of being in place, 49ers have good ownership, 49ers have a great head coach, and 49ers have a very serviceable to excellent quarterback.
08:57Next up, the real MVP, in my opinion, is Trent Williams, and I think he's been that the last two or three years.
09:06When he plays, Purdy has his security blanket, and it's hard to quantify it, to put a number to it.
09:14But get in the mind of a quarterback, and you know that that element is solid, that fear factor is removed, and now you're on to being able to execute at a higher level.
09:30Yeah, Paul, good call. Thank you very much. I think we throw, and I get why, we throw MVP around to a lot of different names.
09:39Is Trent Williams the MVP? I wouldn't really call him that. Is McCaffrey? I probably would.
09:46For most teams, the quarterback is the most important player on the team.
09:50I know this team was still pretty solid, even when Brock went out.
09:53It wasn't nearly as good, but it was still pretty solid.
09:56So you can hand that around a lot. I'm more just, I look at it this way.
10:02To me, the definition of this year's team is that in many ways they proved that what a lot of people have said about them through the years is wrong.
10:12Which is, Brock Purdy and this offense are good as long as he's got all those Avengers out there.
10:18The Thundercats.
10:18And that's why they can function.
10:21Well, how about now?
10:22Now you're in the divisional round of the playoffs doing stuff on the road, and you're without all kinds of people.
10:28You're not without McCaffrey.
10:30So that, I think, is the biggest deal of them all.
10:33But when it was, oh, but he's got Deebo, and he's got Brandon, and he's got George, and now he's got none of them.
10:37And you're still scoring at a pretty high clip, and now you're winning in the playoffs.
10:42So that disproves that.
10:43And then outside of that, I just go person by person and go, dude, as many of those guys as you can have, the better.
10:49Of course.
10:49And so now they've got Trent.
10:51And so that's one green check as far as the important people.
10:54If you want to talk about the real MVP and just focus on the value, the most valuable player is Trent Williams.
11:01And when you have to replace him, you have a giant step down.
11:06You realize he's played in 89% of the snaps this year?
11:09That's huge for a guy his age in the spot that's that important.
11:13And Austin Pleasance did his level best in the other 11% of left tackle snaps.
11:18But having Trent all year has made a lot of what you're talking about possible.
11:22Christian McCaffrey, who played in 83% of the snaps, by the way, that's a monster load for any running back.
11:29And so, you know, you didn't have Brock for a while.
11:31He played in just over half the snaps.
11:34And yeah, Mack Jones was able to more than hold it down.
11:37But for me, when you think about who you can't afford to lose in a game like this, it starts with Trent.
11:42So having him, even though he may still be hampered, he's not on the injury list.
11:46So he's got to be doing pretty well.
11:48Deep dive on underdog.
11:50And I did find Luke Farrell.
11:52Okay.
11:52Half a catch.
11:53Half a catch.
11:54Half a catch.
11:54That's it.
11:55Not have a catch.
11:56No.
11:57Like in Field of Dreams.
11:59Half a catch.
12:00Hey, Paul, you want a half a catch?
12:02I want a half a catch.
12:02I like the over.
12:03Dude, every now and again, Hollywood, that's why sports movies usually don't work.
12:09Hollywood is just like they're actors.
12:12They're not sports people.
12:15I know there's a lot of Hollywood people who are like, I'm a sports fan.
12:18But too many times in sports movies, Hollywood will tell on itself somewhere in the movie and they'll just yell to the audience.
12:26We actually have no idea what we're talking about.
12:28Interesting you say that.
12:29Hey, Dad, do you want to have a catch?
12:31I had a debate last week with Dylan, a.k.a. Ryan, as Stiney calls him.
12:36Oh.
12:36And he says he's from the East Coast.
12:38And back East, they actually say, have a catch.
12:40Oh, that's interesting.
12:41Except for this did not take place back East.
12:44It was kind of in the middle.
12:45I don't know where that line is, where have a catch starts.
12:48We got to ask George Kittle.
12:49Yeah.
12:49Do you have a catch or do you just play catch?
12:51Exactly.
12:52Okay.
12:52Because I was saying the same thing, like, have a catch.
12:54How stupid.
12:55He's like, no, it's actually what we say in New York or whatever.
12:57Exactly.
12:58Take your room for it.
12:58You like have a lemonade.
12:59You don't have a catch.
13:01Have a cow.
13:02Yeah.
13:02You play catch.
13:03Right.
13:04Hey, Dad, you want to play catch?
13:05Anyway, whatever.
13:07Trent Williams, to me, is that guy because he's played more this year than I thought.
13:12And when he didn't play, which was the game against Seattle, you could tell that they were
13:16having a hard time protecting and running.
13:18Lucas, is this person's name Aline or is this a typo and it's Allen?
13:23Is it Allen?
13:24Okay.
13:25Allen on 280.
13:26Hi, Allen.
13:26Thank you for calling.
13:27I want to get people's names right.
13:28Yep.
13:30Yeah, it is, Allen.
13:31So thank you.
13:32Yeah, hi.
13:33I think it's time to go.
13:35Can you hear me?
13:35I think it's time to have Brock really lead the way.
13:39And the way to do that is to put him into a position where he can avoid the rush.
13:44And to me, it's a little bit more RPO.
13:47It's a little bit more rollout.
13:48Maybe you put Farrell, you put Williams on one side and you plan for him to roll out left.
13:54Or you put him on the right side and have Juszczyk ahead of him.
13:57And that way you can maybe slow down the rush, throw a couple of screen passes.
14:02And with time, you can maybe get Pearsall open a little bit more.
14:06So it's time to say we're turning the keys over to Brock.
14:10You're going to win the game or you're not.
14:12And you've got Trent.
14:13It's very possible.
14:14That's my comment.
14:15Yeah, thanks.
14:16I like sometimes I think we get a little romantic with the whole like, let's turn the game.
14:20Let's give him the keys and let's have him be the one who leads us through the foot.
14:26Like, okay, he's always leading the way.
14:29He's the quarterback.
14:29He's got the ball in his hand.
14:30So he's the one who's going to make the decisions and either make the throws or not make the throws.
14:34But where I really agree with Alan, he's reminding me of how I felt, as did many others, in that Seattle game.
14:42Which is, if you're watching your offensive line get overwhelmed, what if we move the pocket a little bit?
14:48Because the pocket kept collapsing.
14:50So, I'm not saying necessarily come out and just do that right away.
14:56Because I don't want the 49ers and Kyle Shanahan to sort of start the game by admitting, like, we don't know how to block.
15:03You know, like, I think sometimes there's messaging in there.
15:06You don't want to tell your offensive line right away.
15:08All right, here's what we're going to do, guys.
15:09Brock's going to run for his life the second he snaps the ball.
15:12Because you five suck.
15:13Like, but you try some things.
15:16And what I thought was last time it was too slow to react to what was happening in that matchup.
15:24And, yes, could you have done a little bit more moving of the pocket?
15:29Could you get Brock on some rollouts?
15:31I would have liked to have seen them try.
15:33That is how I felt after watching that game against Seattle two weeks ago.
15:37I agree with it on the surface and in principle.
15:40But when you think back and you watch the game back, they didn't have any chance to do anything until the third drive.
15:46Because it was three and out.
15:48And the second three and out, I'm looking at my notes.
15:50They blitzed and Burford got beat.
15:52Purdy ran forward and only lost a yard.
15:54And then Jawan got eight and you punted again.
15:56And then the third drive, you only got one first down.
16:00And then you had to punt again.
16:01So, actually, you went forward on the fourth down.
16:03You didn't get it.
16:04And that first drive started on the four-yard line.
16:06And you don't want to get tricky.
16:07Right.
16:08Right.
16:08Their first drive was when Seattle went forward on fourth down, didn't get it.
16:11That's right.
16:11So, you take over on the four.
16:13So, you don't want long, developing plays against a fast defense at the four-yard line.
16:17And third and two, you threw to Jawan and they were there.
16:20They broke it up.
16:20And so, you didn't get into enough rhythm to where you could run the boot action,
16:25which only works if you're able to run it and you sell the fake on the front side to the run.
16:30If you're not running it, the defense is probably not going to be that concerned about your fake.
16:33And their defense, they blitzed at the right time.
16:37They rushed four and they got home.
16:38You're right about the offensive line.
16:40It didn't matter what you were going to try to do because you didn't have enough time to establish anything.
16:45Boxer and Gerson work injury attorney's text line, 650.
16:49Went to kindergarten to second grade in New York.
16:53We always said, let's go have a catch.
16:56My college buddies still give me a hard time today.
16:58But the very next text, 415, grew up in the Northeast my entire life.
17:03And never, ever did I hear, have a catch.
17:05You play catch.
17:06Okay.
17:07This is exciting.
17:08This is a great sub-thread for the show.
17:09We've got controversy.
17:11We've got controversy.
17:12What we need is one of those maps like, these states are rooting for Indiana in the national championship game.
17:17These states say, have a catch.
17:19National championship game.
17:20That's Monday, I think, right?
17:21It is.
17:22It's whenever the NFL doesn't play next.
17:26Zach Green against Sam Lubman, for those of you on the inside of our staff.
17:29Very exciting matchup.
17:31When two producers collide.
17:34John in Milpitas.
17:35Hi, John.
17:36Thanks for calling.
17:37Hey, guys.
17:38Hey.
17:39Hey.
17:40Thank you for taking my call.
17:40Yeah, you know, I just want to say that 49ers offense last time we played the Seahawks didn't look the same.
17:46Literally didn't look the same.
17:47And I think it starts with those damn uniforms they were wearing.
17:50Those helmets, never seen anything like it.
17:54That's the first big change in a helmet, right?
17:56The 49ers all time.
17:57Are you superstitious, John?
18:00I think so.
18:01Maybe a little bit after that showing.
18:03What did you wear last Sunday?
18:07You know, that's really good because I would wear my favorite players' jerseys.
18:12Last Sunday, I wore a Niners t-shirt.
18:15So I'm wearing it again this Saturday night.
18:17I was going to say, make sure you did the laundry now.
18:21Exactly.
18:22But I don't know.
18:23You know, we've seen those jerseys before.
18:25Something similar, but not a helmet style like that.
18:28I don't know if the offense recognized each other with those helmets on.
18:31Yeah.
18:31John, thanks.
18:33I know that Guru didn't like them.
18:38Jasky's a big uniform guy.
18:40Yeah.
18:40I'm not a big uniform guy, but I didn't really like them.
18:42I thought they looked good, but then, like, it all gets ruined when you only score three points.
18:46But I don't blame the uniforms.
18:49But I'm like, yeah.
18:50Like, when they took the field, I'm like, sweet.
18:52And then I'm like, well, now I want to go sleep.
18:54Right.
18:55Like, this game sucks.
18:56Didn't really.
18:56I didn't love them.
18:57So it didn't hit.
18:58I like the numbers.
18:59The old script numbers.
19:01That I like.
19:02I saw a dude at Costco earlier today rocking that jersey, the black jersey, number 49.
19:09No, no, no.
19:10Number 49.
19:11That's Wallow.
19:12I walked by him, and I did the swing and look, because I'm like, is he wearing a Garrett Wallow jersey?
19:18Oh, my God.
19:19Did he get this thing made this week?
19:21And you know what it said where the name goes?
19:24Faithful.
19:25All right.
19:26So it actually just says Faithful 49.
19:29Wasn't Earl Cooper 49?
19:31Yes, he was.
19:31Back in the day?
19:3289, I think.
19:33One, I can't remember if he went from 89 to 49 or vice versa, but yes, he wore both.
19:38Okay.
19:38That is accurate.
19:40If this guy was rocking a Wallow, that, I mean, that would be an impressive.
19:44Oh, I would have invited him on the show.
19:45No doubt.
19:46Yeah.
19:46He would have been joining us at 315.
