00:00ICE agents can resume some stops in Los Angeles after the Supreme Court temporarily paused a
00:05lower court ban. The decision affects stops previously limited over concerns of racial profiling.
00:14The decision impacts Los Angeles and nearby counties where ICE had been limited from making
00:20stops without specific suspicion. The case stems from raids at day laborer sites, Home Depot parking
00:26lots, car washes and bus stops, where plaintiffs said officers were targeting people based on race,
00:33language or job type rather than clear evidence of illegal presence. In July, a federal judge blocked
00:39these practices, but the government appealed, arguing that the restrictions could hinder
00:44enforcement in areas with large populations of undocumented individuals. Homeland Security
00:50Secretary Kristi Noem says on X that the decision lets officials focus on the worst criminal illegal
00:56aliens that pose a danger to public safety. A DHS spokesperson called the ruling a victory for
01:03California and the rule of law, adding that enforcement is carried out without prejudice or
01:08favor. The ACLU of Southern California says the case will move forward with a federal judge set to
01:14consider whether long-term limits on ICE rates are needed. An attorney with the ACLU says this decision
01:21is a devastating setback for our plaintiffs and communities who for months have been subjected
01:26to immigration stops because of the color of their skin, occupation or the language they speak.
01:32The decision split the court. Six justices backed lifting the order while three dissented.
01:38Justice Brett Kavanaugh said officers can consider multiple factors to establish reasonable suspicion,
01:45while Justice Sonia Sotomayor warned it could enable targeting based on broad profiles,
01:50leaving Latino communities fearing arbitrary stops. Read the full story right now on the
